As written by Michael Sweet and reported on the facebook of Stryper:

We start recording our 8th, full length album on Monday 4/1 and I’d like to start it the right way. I’d like to ask all of you to continue to pray for the band and the process of recording what we hope and pray will be our best and most powerful record to date. God is in control and He could take a band like us, a record like this, and do things that have never been done before. I’ve seen God work first hand and many things have happened over the years with Stryper that are nothing short of miraculous! I pray that this record will have the power, message and energy that all the others have had combined, so much so that it’s undeniable to anyone that hears it.

People ask all the time if our faith is still in tact, if we still believe, if we’re still a Christian band and the answer is a loud n’ clear – YES! More so than ever before.

We’re a little tired, beat up and exhausted from the past 30 years but our hearts desire is to continue spreading Gods love through the gifts, talents and abilities that He has blessed us with. God is leading the way, not any one of us.

God bless you for your undying support, belief and encouragement for all that we have done and all that we do.

This record can be our best record yet and we appreciate your prayers. We love you guys and could not have made it this far without you. Love and Respect to all of you, always!!!

Michael

STRYPER LOGO - LARGE!!

STRYPER – When I think of the band that pioneered Christian Hard Rock and Heavy Metal, STRYPER is number one. Across their catalog of seven studio albums, the words melodic and memorable jump out at me; while their 80′s arena style heaviness never seems to grow stale. After listening to STRYPER after all these years, I’m readily admitting that their inspirational lyrics and vibes never sounded so grand!

STRYPER has proven their Heavy Rock relevancy with Murder By Pride (2009) and The Covering (cover song album from 2011). With a newly inked record deal with Frontiers Records, the future looks even more positive for a band that has been Rocking positive energy into their fans souls… for decades strong.

To celebrate STRYPER being Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day, I have compiled a chronological list of ALL the STRYPER features, album reviews and news that has ever appeared on Metal Odyssey. This list of links below begins with the most recent of STRYPER posts. Scroll and click away… and enjoy some STRYPER history! Metal be thy name!

Stryper - Second Coming - promo cover pic!

RE-RECORDED COLLECTION “SECOND COMING” DUE OUT IN MARCH

__________________________________________________

Frontiers Records is proud to announce the signing of iconic Christian rockers Stryper to a multi-album deal.  The first release due out will be a new re-recorded collection; SECOND COMING will hit streets on March 22nd in Europe and March 26th in North America.

The album features sixteen tracks, including new recordings of fourteen songs from the band’s early years as well as two brand new songs recorded especially for SECOND COMING, and is produced by Stryper frontman Michael Sweet.

Sweet commented:We’re really excited about this record. The re-recorded songs are sounding awesome…better than the originals in many ways!  One word to describe the record? Heavier. We’ve hooked up with some great people – we’ve got new management, a great album, a great label. We just feel like everything is coming together, and hopefully some big things are to follow.”  Please see below for the complete track listing.

Stryper is one of the top Christian Rock bands of all time. Comprised of the original line-up of Michael Sweet (vocals/guitar), Oz Fox (guitar), Tim Gaines (bass), and Robert Sweet (drums), Stryper has been rocking since 1984, and is responsible for such ’80s metal classic albums as SOLDIERS UNDER COMMAND, TO HELL WITH THE DEVIL, IN GOD WE TRUST and such MTV hit singles/videos as “Calling on You,” “Free,” and “Honestly.”

Stryper - Group Promo pic - 2013 - #!

After a sabbatical for much of the 1990′s, Stryper returned strong in the early 21st century. To date, the band has sold upwards of 8 million records worldwide and is a Dove Award-winner and Grammy nominee.  Stryper is the first band to have two songs in MTV’s Top 10 simultaneously.

SECOND COMING track listing: Loud N’ Clear; Loving You; Soldiers Under Command; Makes Me Wanna Sing; First Love; The Rock That Makes Me Roll; Reach Out; Surrender; To Hell With The Devil; Calling On You; Free; The Way; Sing Along Song; More Than A Man; Bleeding From Inside Out (New song); Blackened (New song)

FOR TODAY “Immortal” – Releases On March 29th, 2012, Via Razor & Tie; New Single “Fearless” Available Now On iTunes

Posted in christian metal, christian rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, metalcore, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on May 21, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

FOR TODAY are a Christian Metalcore band (with Hardcore influence) from Sioux City, Iowa that formed back in 2005. Their fourth studio album, Immortal, will be released on March 29th, 2012, via Razor & Tie Records. Immortal will be the band’s debut for Razor & Tie Records, having their prior albums released via Facedown Records.

You can download their new single “Fearless” on iTunes here: http://bit.ly/FTFEARLESS

I bought this Fearless single and I’ll have to admit, it’s one heavy song. A very memorable chorus, along with some punishing drums and face-melting hardcore vocals, combines to make Fearless a dominating sonic experience. Metal be thy name.

MASS – Louis St. August Interview: Discusses The “Sea Of Black” Album With Metal Odyssey!

Posted in christian rock, classic rock, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on December 8, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

MASS & Louis St. August – If there is that one excellent album from 2010 that I was late in grasping my ears onto, that album is Sea Of Black from MASS. Louis St. August (vocalist) and his band wrote a complete album of songs with Sea Of Black, there is no question in my Metal mind about that. An all inspiring listen that encompasses me is Sea Of Black, song after song. Add the fact that this album Rocks so solidly for me, that I can’t resist telling the world that Sea Of Black is a must acquisition from 2010.

The Right Side and the title track are two heavy hitters on Sea Of Black that are tailor-made for an open-air festival, with both songs carrying an anthem vibe and own unique message of spirituality. All The Years Gone is my favorite song on this album. This song sparks my thoughts to drift in retrospect, as I think about my own life and personal moments. MASS essentially created an amazing album with Sea Of Black. I find this album’s decisive appeal in its walloping sound of later 80′s Arena Rock commingling with a Hard Rock sound of today.

Louis and his band sound so sharp and reclaimed on Sea Of Black that it’s downright infectious. I recently was afforded the opportunity to ask Louis some questions regarding this Sea Of Black album. Louis was amicable as always and here’s what he had to say:

Stone: What was the chemistry like with the band, as you wrote and recorded “Sea Of Black”?

Louis: The band was itching and ready to get started on a brand new MASS album since our last release (Crack Of Dawn) was well over three years ago and with some of those songs recorded at various places and times. So “Sea of Black” was a more of a complete album for us and a real back to how we like to record. Myself and Gene would get together a few times and just set some basic foundations like melodies and basic song structure. We would then take it down to band rehearsals and Michael and Joey would all add their ideas and we were on our way building Sea Of Black.

The band was tight and we knew exactly what we were going to do before we entered the studio. The chemistry was great and the band laid down all twelve basic tracks in just two days. Then we added additional guitar tracks, lead solos, Lead vocals and backup vocals wrapping up the recording part of it in a little more than three weeks time.

It has been a while since we recorded a full album in just one studio and it was perfect. A week later the tracks were flown to Sweden where Martin Kronlund mixed and mastered the album. Every time a song was mixed we would all listen and tweak it until it was to our liking! Thank god for today’s technology that we can now work with overseas producers.

Louis St. August – 2011

Stone: I personally feel “Sea Of Black” is the best Mass album in your catalog. Were you at any point, aiming to create the best Mass album ever or did you just let fate take control?

Louis: Obviously you always go in with the intentions of trying to create the best album you possible can and try to surpass the last release. But it really does come down to fate on how it will all end up sounding in the end. With Sea of Black we really wanted to get back to more of our roots and style and what MASS was all about with big Guitars, Big Drums, Big Vocals and Big Bass. A “MASSive” sound you might say. (Laughs). I think we achieved that and the great reception from our old fans, new fans and media proved it.

Stone: Your intro vocal scream on “The Right Side” reminds me of Ian Gillan’s vocal intro on “Highway Star”. Was this a deliberate salute to a classic vocal moment in Rock history or an original idea of yours?

Louis: (Laughs). Funny you said that I remember saying that to Gene in the studio that it sounded very “Ian Gillanish”. So I am keeping it in. I am honored to have any comparisons with such a great Rock Icon for he was one of my many vocal idols growing up. But actually the scream is sort of a little trademark I have done over the years. It started with our first album where I do a similar scream on “Watch her walk”, then on our “Take you Home” album on a song called “Want it Back” and there may be a few others too. (Laughs).

Stone: Where, what or who did you draw inspiration from when writing the lyrics and/or music for “Sea Of Black”?

Louis: Most of the lyrics I write are autobiographical something I have personally experienced in my life or have either seen on the news, read in a book or witness happening to a friend. Songs like “Falling From Grace”, “The Right Side” are about my personal beliefs in accepting God into my life and choosing the right path for me. A song like “Justify” was written about 911 and how I felt on that and “Thru The Rain” is about war itself.

On “Till We Meet Again” I simply just put myself in the shoes of an old friend who recently had lost his dear wife, soul mate, lover and friend and how I would react and feel if it were to happen to me. The song is dedicated to the lovely Kyle Sweet (Wife of Michael Sweet of Stryper) who sadly passed away from cancer whom we had the pleasure of knowing for a short time.

Stone: Is MASS stronger today than they have ever been as a band? Is the present day for MASS a “New Birth” part two?

Louis: Yes I believe we have persevered over the years and have finally come to a point where we have gained much attention and respect from the music industry on what we started here in Boston over 30 years ago. Now in our late 40’s we appreciate what we have accomplished, created and are very thankful for all our loyal fans that have stood by us over the years. For we are truly nothing without them!

It does feel like a New Birth part two in a way, with a great 2010 being one of our busiest years with 3 releases and 2011 with continued rise in album sales and with some great recorded live performances to boot. Who knows what the future holds? With that we look forward to recording our ninth album this winter and releasing it worldwide in 2012! So stay tuned MASS fans, the best is yet to come!

STRYPER “The Covering” – A Commanding Celebration of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal Classics

Posted in christian heavy metal, christian rock, classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on February 4, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

STRYPER – Christian Heavy Metal and Hard Rock’s genre pioneer, influence, household name and undisputed legend of a band are back again. This time around, they are releasing an album of 12 covers songs with an additional original song. This original song is aptly titled: God. This substantial undertaking of covering such lifetime dependable classics is known as The Covering, to be released on Big 3 Records on February 15, 2011.

Stryper. The name alone resonates the positive energy and glorious power of their Christian belief and unity, not to mention they are one incredibly talented group of musicians. To understand and accept each respective Heavy Music genre is to be open minded to the bands that illuminate each genre, like a shooting star in the midnight sky. Stryper has been a shooting star for Christian Heavy Metal and Hard Rock since their 1984 debut The Yellow and Black Attack. Spanning four decades as a band of any genre is an admirable feat, while still being able to legitimize their sound and style through quality musicianship, after all these years, to multiple generations of fans, is undeniably respectable. For me, this is what Stryper has consistently accomplished to date.

There has been that moment when Stryper tried their hand at breaking away from their lyrical style and to a degree, musical style as well, with 1990′s Against The Law proving they were just as muscular and driven as a band than ever before. Stryper has branched out once again with The Covering, justifying they are not just an enormous Heavy Metal Band, they are colossal fans of Heavy Metal and Hard Rock’s roots. The Covering offers up the stylistic depth of Stryper, a Heavy Metal aptitude that they have bestowed upon songs that many of us old and new school Metalheads find uncompromisingly sacred.

From Iron Maiden to Kansas, with the Ronnie James Dio era Black Sabbath in-between, Stryper doesn’t need to wear their influences on their sleeves… they cover them with the upmost Heavy Metal reverence on The Covering. It is with much applause from this Classic Rock admirer, that a much prominent hit from the catalog of Sweet is exposed for it’s timeless Rockin’ sheen. Set Me Free is credibly set free with Stryper’s trademark Arena style vibe, acknowledging Sweet for their rightful place among Rock legends. Michael Sweet never wavers vocally throughout The Covering, he only makes each song rise with their power and energy that they originally were christened with by their creators.

As stated by me so often in the past, nothing beats the original. However, when done with acute and painstaking care, an album of cover songs can Rock my world and leave me appreciative and begging for more when done the Stryper way. How difficult can it be to cover a Scorpions song? Klaus Meine’s vocals alone are so unique and identifiable it’s simply scary. If it were up to me, I would never mess with trying to cover a Scorpions song… only Stryper did just that. On Blackout, I cannot control the enthusiastic feeling that devours my senses, as Michael Sweet belts out the lyrics to this classic Scorpions song. The only thing I can say about the cover of Highway Star is: holy Metal does Stryper embellish this song with impressive guitar driven prowess! And it’s built on speed!

Any tried and true Metalhead will come down with a serious case of ostrich bumps up and down their body, as the psych-you-out adrenaline bursts within like a volcano, each time they hear Heaven and Hell by the Ronnie James Dio fronted Black Sabbath. Stryper may never exceed those heavenly supercharges of Heavy Metal ecstasy that I feel from the original Heaven and Hell… only Stryper does come close. It may be that this song means so damn much, to so many of us, coupled with Stryper’s anointing Heaven and Hell with their approval of influence, that in turn triggers such an ignited feeling within my Metal soul. I’m certain the late Ronnie James Dio is smiling down, from above.

Over The Mountain is yet another super Heavy Metal classic from a legend of legends… Ozzy Osbourne. No, Oz Fox nor Michael Sweet are going to out-do the late Randy Rhoads on guitar, nor will Michael Sweet become an instant sound alike to Ozzy either. The Metal point is, this is Stryper simply covering a song with a sincerity that heavily seeps through their music in an uncanny way, which at the end of the Metal day cannot be ignored or denied. When I can catch myself singing along to these covered classics from Heavy Metal’s storied past, the realization sets in that Stryper has done good. Damn good too.

Carry On Wayward Son from an ultra-influential band like Kansas is untouchable right? Well, Stryper touches it and fires up their version with the heightened emotion it was always meant to release. If there is one song on The Covering that doesn’t smack it down for me, it’s Stryper’s version of The Immigrant Song by the infinitely legendary Led Zeppelin. Yes, some classics are best left untouched and Led Zeppelin is a monumental band to cover, regardless of the song. It just comes across as Stryper not staying true to the original hardness of The Immigrant Song, any slight watering down of such a classic will stand out and scream at me in a millisecond. Where’s Great White when I need The Immigrant Song covered?

The lone original song on The Covering, as I mentioned earlier is God. Whoa, this song is super saturated with emotion and can easily be looked upon as one of the most inspiring songs Stryper has ever written and recorded. It’s ostrich bumps time folks… and God is a candidate for Michael Sweet’s finest vocal performance of his very own legendary career. I found myself playing this song the most since I’ve obtained The Covering from Best Metal Buddy and Metal Researcher… Scott Coverdale. Yes, Scott has given The Covering his highest of Metal praise and understandably so. Stone’s Message to Stryper: God is one “heck” of a song and The Covering is one hell of an album. Metal be thy name.

I’m pleased as a fan, that Styper has shown the world that they do have Hard Rock and Heavy Metal influences that are not of the flower garden variety. What else would any Stryper or Heavy Metal fan expect? Michael Sweet has his affiliation as a member of Boston and the Heavy Rock family tree does extend outside the lines of the Christian genre for Stryper. These guys are human, just like me and you, they are not martyrs sent to us from the Vatican. This is a band that has been influenced by some of the most iconic acts in the Heavy Rockin’ land and The Covering proves it. Stryper will always be a Christian Metal Band and I sincerely respect that. I also respect the fact that Stryper has taken this path down Hard Rock and Heavy Metal roots lane and covered some of the greatest songs of Rock Music’s history.

STRYPER – “EXTENDED VERSIONS” IS A LIVE AND ROCKIN’ GOOD TIME CD

I could not resist the urge to buy this Stryper Extended Versions CD, (Sony/BMG). Two reasons I needed this Stryper Extended Versions: it being a live CD, coupled with the fact I was fortunate enough to see Stryper live, back in the ’80′s on their To Hell With The Devil Tour. Yup, I made up my Metal mind a long time ago, that Stryper is my favorite Christian Heavy Metal Band. Let’s face it, Stryper back in the 1980′s were easily part of the Hair Metal invasion as well. I like the accessibility of Stryper’s songs, they are inspiring and motivating for certain, combined with all of the dynamics and elements of 1980′s Heavy Metal. This Extended Versions CD was recorded back on November 11, 2003, at Earthlink Live in Atlanta, Georgia. The release year for this CD was 2006. The overall production of this live CD sits just fine with me. I will admit, after 12 years of Stryper not touring before this concert was recorded, they sound pretty darned good. (Michael Sweet actually remarks about their return after 12 years to the audience, during the opening song Makes Me Wanna Sing).

As with any live album, there are those – as they happen moments, such as Michael Sweet talking to the audience and an over excited crowd of fans shouting, screaming and singing along. Those aspects have always been what I find most refreshing about a live album… especially when the band plays as tight and good as Stryper does here. Free is and always has been a tremendously favorite Stryper song of mine, hearing Michael Sweet sing this song as the audience sings along sends chills up and down my arms. Oz Fox on guitar sounds unreal good in this 2003 concert recording, just as he did when I saw him for myself so many years ago. You Won’t Be Lonely is a great up tempo ballad for my Metal tastes… it makes for a nice fit into this live set list. Calling On You, being one of the more famous Stryper songs ever, has all of the melodic power and harmony as the original studio version, a fantastic song from this band.

Reach Out is a sure-fire crowd sing-along, yet, what Stryper song isn’t? The Way is arguably one of the fastest and heaviest Stryper song on this live Extended Versions, Oz Fox energizes this song with his stealth guitar leads and hot solo. Soldiers Under Command plays out in the same fast and heavy fashion as The Way, a Stryper song that is a necessity in any of their live gigs. Again, Oz Fox stimulates my Metal senses with his guitar brilliance on Soldiers Under Command – oh yeah. Timothy Gaines on bass and backing vocals along with Robert Sweet on drums are the Heavy Metal nuts and bolts that keeps this live album rhythmically astounding. Brent Jeffers is on keyboards and backing vocals, making for a nice addition to this Stryper concert.

Another favorite Stryper classic of mine is To Hell With The Devil, it is song #9 in the set list and it flat out rocks this Extended Versions into a Christian Heavy Metal winner. Stryper plays this song live quite powerfully, based on my remembrance of actually seeing them live and hearing it on this CD. Honestly closes out this Stryper Extended Versions CD. The live version of Honestly is not any heavier than the studio version, this ballad has its rightful place in any Stryper concert. Before this song even begins, Michael Sweet tells the audience, Honestly is the song that took them out of the clubs and put them into the arenas. I will not disagree with Michael Sweet on that evaluation whatsoever.

I bought this Stryper Extended Versions CD over this past Summer of 2009, I’m glad for it. I am also happy to know that Stryper is still around and making their brand of Heavy Metal Music, their new album Murder By Pride is an enormous album of songs. Sometime in the future I will blab about how much I enjoy the newest Stryper album. I am a fan of all Heavy Metal genres, Stryper is and always will be a mainstay band of mine.

My Favorite STRYPER Album Of All Time – “To Hell With The Devil”

main-150Stryper – “To Hell With The Devil” was released on October 24, 1986. I already was an avid listener to Stryper and their brand of Christian Heavy Metal Music when this album came out. I had purchased their album “Soldiers Under Command”, (released on May 15, 1985), within months after it’s release, therefore I already took a liking to Stryper. I always have been and forever will be, diversified with my adoration for Metal music. I hate sounding like a broken record by saying… if I have said it once, I shall say it again… I listen to all Hard Rock and Metal Music genres. The songs on this album are exquisitely inspirational, they are enormously melodic and yes… commercial 1980′s Heavy Metal. It is the power that comes across to me, from these songs, that makes this Stryper album my all time favorite. Anytime any religion plays a role within the framework of a Heavy Metal band and their lyrics, it is better left up to the individual listener, to make the choice if this is what they want to embrace. In my Metal opinion, it is all about personal preference and interpretation, when it comes to any specific form of music. I will still play this album and benefit from the Heavy Metal and lyrical contents that are found within.

I remember buying this album at Strawberries Records & Tapes, in a very expensive town in very expensive Connecticut, back in 1986, of course. I snagged this album up within the first month of its release. I wound up with the limited front cover version of “To Hell With The Devil”, (see album cover image below as to what I mean). The image of the album cover, at the beginning of this post, shows the current front cover being used for “To Hell With The Devil”. I am not trying to sound cliche by stating, “To Hell With The Devil” is one darn cool, feel good Heavy Metal album. For me, this album really is a mood changer… an album that sends me directly into a good mood vacuum. One thing is for certain, I never felt I had to be a saint to in order to listen and get into the Heavy Metal thunder of Stryper.

This album I originally bought back in 1986, fell victim to being sold by me years later. Crazy as this sounds, I ventured into a local thrift store last Autumn of 2008, on one of my Metal prowls… and I found “To Hell With The Devil” with the limited front album cover as well. I stood inside this thrift store and felt as if I was imagining things… here was an album I most regretted ever letting go and it was the limited version staring right at me. This album beckoned me to bring it home and give it a turntable spin once again. I state quite often my Metal finds, they do happen more frequently than not, I will not complain. Believe me when I say, this copy I found at the thrift store is in mint condition – it came with the semi-hefty price tag of fifty cents. As I drove away from this thrift store, with this Stryper album placed on the passenger front seat… I looked down upon it, thinking some funny thoughts.

My mind was drifting away, astray with thoughts as to why was I fortunate in finding this particular Stryper album? My single favorite Stryper album of all time just so happened to be at this thrift store on this day. The more rare of the two album covers as well, has been returned to my collection of Metal Music on this particular day, for literally pennies. I started to think that maybe I was being rewarded by a higher power, for perhaps some good deeds that I bestowed in the past. Maybe it was just pure luck too. Whichever it may be, luck or divine intervention, the original album cover version of “To Hell With The Devil” will not be for sale by me again. I really am not concerned with its secondary market value anyhow, for me the true value is found within the songs of this album, the enjoyment I derive from the Christian Heavy Metal Band of Stryper.

The musicians of Stryper, as they appeared on “To Hell With The Devil”: Michael Sweet on lead vocals and guitar, Robert Sweet on drums, Tim Gaines on bass guitar and Oz Fox on drums.
