Rodrigo y Gabriela, My Battle With Bronchitis and Go Get ‘Em Lehigh University

Posted in acoustic rock, Guitar, guitarists, latin rock, Music, rock albums, rock music, rock music news, sports with tags , , , , , , , on March 17, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

I’ve been putting up with a doozy of a cold this past week, coupled with a nagging cough that spells: bronchitis. I wanted to write another album review or two these past days as well, only trying to “concentrate” on writing when you’re coughing up a storm doesn’t help matters! With today being Saturday, it has been eight days of feeling under the weather, regardless, I feel like I’m getting a ton better.

I’ve been listening to Rodrigo y Gabriela and C.U.B.A.Area 52 quite a bit lately. This guitar duo are amazing players and the Cuban musicians that they recruited for their new album are superb. Just a thoroughly cool listen is this entire Area 52 album. Honestly, the tones that resonate from the guitars of Rodrigo y Gabriela along with the rhythms from their songs have made me feel pretty damn good this past week, especially when I needed that necessary “lift” in spirits.

C.U.B.A. stands for: Collective Universal Band Association. Again, I cannot emphasize enough, what an excellent sound that this Cuban orchestra gives to this Rodrigo y Gabriela album. If you’re looking for a must Summertime album to chill, dance or Rock out to, then Area 52 is one damn fine candidate. Hopefully, I will write a more detailed review for this Rodrigo y Gabriela album in the near future. For now, get it, especially if you appreciate instrumental guitar and/or Latin Rock.

I very rarely write about sports on Metal Odsyssey. I “use to be” a sports nut. Do I still follow sports? Of course I do. The difference now is, after spending years of watching entire games on television, I am now content to catch a minute of action here and there, while getting updated scores via the internet whenever I feel like it. Congratulations to Lehigh University!

Ha, ha Duke. Ha, ha again. Every year, the NCAA Tournament “committee” finds it necessary to seed Duke at either #1 or #2, then they place Duke within a 60 mile radius of their home campus for tournament play. Favoritism. It’s been going on between Duke University and the NCAA for decades now. Well, Lehigh University let Duke know just how “great” they are this past Friday.

On Friday, March 16, 2012, the #15 seed Lehigh University defeated the #2 seed Duke 75 to 70. In Greensboro, North Carolina, the backyard of Duke, Lehigh University got it done. Ha, ha Duke. Ha, ha NCAA. The “brain-trust” of the NCAA probably thought that Duke would “roll” Lehigh University too. Think again NCAA. Don’t worry, next year that same NCAA “selection committee” will have Duke at #1 or #2 again, only next year they won’t have them paired up against Lehigh Universtiy.

Long Live Rodrigo y Gabriela.

Go Get ‘Em Lehigh University.

However, there are those “thank yous” that I need to mention, If I leave anyone out, believe me, you are included.

THANK YOU to all the super cool PR people and record companies that have made it possible for Metal Odyssey to deliver the METAL news and album reviews! Each and every one of you ROCK beyond belief! Without them, I am in the dark.

THANK YOU to all the bands and musicians that have been mentioned, featured and/or interviewed here on Metal Odyssey this past year. Without them, life would suck big time. Really.

Now, here are some Metal thoughts, um, ramblings from Stone:

The world will NOT end in 2012. Sorry. If I’m wrong and the dreaded doomsday does come to pass this year, I will hopefully be with my family while any ORANGE GOBLIN album is blasting LOUD around me.

2012 IS GONNA ROCK! WHY?

Cause… Ozzy, Tony, Geezer and Bill are… BACK!

Cause… KISS is releasing a new studio album titled: MONSTER.

Cause… KING DIAMOND is better and… back in action! Just ask Metallica.

Cause… VAN HALEN IS BACK!

BOLD SPORTS PREDICTION:

The New York Yankees will win the 2012 World Series.

STONE’S 2012 NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS:

There are so many that are too boring to list. Okay, here’s two:

I shall eat less potato chips and listen to MORE METAL \m/

STONE’S WISHES FOR 2012:

I wish for an end to world hunger and human suffering of any kind. May there be world peace? On a smaller scale, I wish that Motörhead would receive a deserved “Lifetime Achievement Award” from The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences.

I wish CHEAP TRICK would follow Metal Odyssey on twitter. If this happens, I will write, without hesitation, a positive article on ABBA and feature it right here on Metal Odyssey for the world to read and see. I’m honestly not kidding. CHEAP TRICK F’n RULES.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SEE MORE OF ON METAL ODYSSEY?

Would you like more album reviews? Short or long album reviews? More/less Metal news? Classic Rock news? Are you demanding more band interviews? Are “lists” good or bad? More or less of Stone’s ramblings? Let your thoughts and feelings be heard by leaving a comment! Man, it would be greatly appreciated!

METAL BE THY NAME.

Thank you to my Metal Buddy down South, for that thoughtful package of CD’s and videos after the hurricane struck. You know who you are.

Heavy Metal guitarist Zoltan Bathory of the hard-hitting band FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH recently stopped by UFC/TUF’s KYLE WATSONS gym, Watson Martial Arts in St. Louis, Missouri, for a session with the MMA fighter.  Before a Metal filled evening, Bathory, a successful Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner, stopped by to roll with Watson and teach some students BJJ techniques.

Watsondemonstrates the technique on Bathory, which Watson credits to his coach, Jack McVicker.

A short clip of the pairs training session can be viewed below:

Super Bowl XLV – My “Dream Metal” Halftime Show I’d Like To Share

Posted in football, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, sports with tags , , , , , , , , , on January 15, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

SUPER BOWL XLV – Regardless of the performers who have been chosen for this years Super Bowl XLV, I have my own “Dream Metal Halftime Show” I’d like to share with the world. Some may disagree with the performers I have chosen, while others will raise the horns to the air and be pleased. Whichever is the case, this is about “personal” choice. Personal Metal choice, that is.

I’d love to see Lemmy, Phil and Mikkey up on that stage… ripping out Killed By Death. Then, it would be so righteous to see and hear Lemmy state to millions of fans worldwide, via live simulcast: “We’re Motörhead and we’re a Rock ‘N’ Roll Band”.

Just to see and hear Klaus Meine belting out: “big city, big city nights!” on that Super Bowl stage would be a Metal moment to remember… especially since the Scorpions are currently in the midst of their three year farewell tour.

Oh, man, would it be a Metal treat to witness Rob Halford as he stalks the Super Bowl stage… singing with Classic Metal defiance: “some heads are gonna roll!” The vision of K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton side by side, trading off guitar licks would be a Metal sight to behold. A Metal Super Bowl XLV sight to behold, that is. What a tremendous way for Judas Priest to kick off their 2011 farewell tour… the Metal thought of it all is fun stuff.

As a last thought to my “Dream Metal” Super Bowl XLV Halftime Show, I would be psyched out of my Metal mind, to see and hear Hank Williams Jr. bellow out: “are you ready for some Metal!”

It’s just too bad that I, along with other Metalheads that span generations, will have to watch mainstream Pop performing at Super Bowl XLV instead.

METAL BE THY NAME.

* BONUS Super Bowl XLV Fact: Stone is the same age as the Super Bowl.

LONG LIVE THE SUPER BOWL.

LONG LIVE METAL.

Donovan McNabb: Metal Odyssey Has Your Back!

Posted in football, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, sports with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on November 7, 2010 by Metal Odyssey

Donovan McNabb – I’m getting pretty sick and tired lately of the trash talking that is directed at Donovan McNabb, quarterback for the Washington Redskins. Yes, I’m a devoted life-long fan of the New York Giants. Still, Donovan McNabb has and still is an opposing quarterback that I have feared and respected when he takes the field against the G-Men. Donovan McNabb’s lifetime statistics should tell anyone, he can… play.

As for Superbowl Championships… how many has Andy Reid, (coach of the Philadelphia Eagles), won? How about former Eagles wide receivers Terrell Owens or Freddie Mitchell? The answer is… “ZERO”. Um, that’s once again… ZERO. So, before all of these NON Superbowl winners make their comments directed at Donovan McNabb… they should all take a long look at their very own NON Superbowl winning careers themselves.

As for current Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan, he does have two Superbowl rings from his days with the Denver Broncos. However, he was also surrounded by a formidable group of NFL players during his tenure with the Broncos… and John Elway and Terrell Davis were players that don’t come around that often on draft day.

I never measured an NFL athlete by how many Superbowl rings they have won and earned. Dan Marino and Fran Tarkenton are two perfect examples as to why I can’t consider a Superbowl Championship the mark of an “ultimate” NFL player. Trent Dilfer won a Superbowl, (XXXV), as quarterback of the Baltimore Ravens… and he is NO Dan Marino. Even though my beloved New York Giants have won”3″ Superbowls… I never take for granted a champion, nor do I look down upon a Giants team that hasn’t won either.

So, Donovan, just look at the Philadelphia Eagles this season. It’s the same old status quo there. Win a game, lose a game, while coach Andy Reid never accepts responsibility or blame for a loss or NON Superbowl winning franchise. Donovan, your very fortunate to be out of that Eagles “environment”, regardless if it is with the Redskins. Just know that this is one NFL fan who actually sees and calls it… “the way it is”. You don’t have to prove anything to this NFL fan, Donovan. I’ve seen you play your whole career and you can hold your head up high… while the “cry babies” of the NFL continue to make themselves look like the spoiled and over paid whiners they truly are.

So, due to this being Metal Odyssey, I found it appropriate to dedicate a song, a Heavy Metal song, to Donovan McNabb. Helloween – Can Do It. This amazing song is from Helloween’s 2007 album – Gambling With The Devil. This song is extremely inspirational and makes me feel so damned good. Let this song be the “theme” for the rest of Donovan McNabb’s NFL career! Metal be thy name.

LONG LIVE DONOVAN MCNABB.

LONG LIVE HELLOWEEN.

Check out my KISS Comic Book from 1978!

KISS – just about any and every item you can think of, has had the KISS logo or images of the band put on them. From lunch boxes to boxer shorts. Over the years, (since the late 1970′s), I have collected KISS collectibles. Still, I would not consider my KISS kollection to be very huge at all. In fact, my KISS kollection is quite modest, I have for some reason or another, showed much restraint in buying “anything” that has the KISS logo on it. One KISS kollectible that I did purchase back in the mid 1980′s was a comic book, from a comic book store that was quite messy and cold. I still have this cool comic book, (see the two pics below this post).

This KISS comic book was put out by Marvel Comics back in 1978. This comic book has 56 pages, a four page/pull out KISS poster and two pages dedicated to the making of the KISS movie – KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park. A KISS interview is also included in these same pages, in regards to their making this movie. I remember when network television carried KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park, it was on NBC, sometime around 1978. If my Metal memory serves me correctly, this movie was rather corn dog… still, it was KISS! I have not seen this KISS movie in probably 30 years now… quite a few years. I will most likely seek out this KISS movie on video or if it’s even on DVD? It would be a Metal hoot to just watch it again… for old times sake!

Going back to my KISS comic book… it is in excellent condition, not mint, yet that is still fine with me. I keep it in a protective plastic comic bag too, just to preserve it all the more.

Here is what the front cover of my KISS comic book from 1978 looks like:

Here is what the back cover of this same KISS comic book looks like:

This back cover advertises the four KISS solo albums from 1978!! The heading on this back cover ad could never be more true – A Milestone! Man, does this bring back some vintage KISS memories! Plus, 1978 was the year that my beloved New York Yankees beat down the hapless Boston Red Sox in a one-game playoff for the American League Eastern Division Title!! Another Milestone! That same legendary Yankees team went on to win the 1978 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers too!! Ahhh… the memories, the milestones, they are truly priceless.

1978… KISS… a KISS comic book… and Bucky Dent hitting a home run over the infamous Green Monster at the ever historic Fenway Park. It’s funny how one memory leads to another from a particular, remembered year.

LONG LIVE KISS!

LONG LIVE BUCKY DENT AND THE 1978 NEW YORK YANKEES TOO!

Happy Thanksgiving to all from Metal Odyssey. Yes, I will eat whatever the heck I feel like eating today, plus the quantity of food I eat is my own personal business too. To all the people who watch what other people eat and tell others how and what to eat… go eat rice cakes today and stare at yourselves in the mirror, you artificial and pompous fools.

I am thankful for:

My incredible wife and beautiful twin daughters… and our new cat toby.

My courageous and strong father.

My Mother and Father In-Law

Nonny

My sister and brother in-law and their two daughters. (And their dog too).

My Best Metal Buddy Scott and his fine family.

My sister is in Heaven and I am thankful for her son and daughter.

My mother is in Heaven too… I am thankful for all the love and memories.

My faith, God and all of the guardian angels who have worked overtime for me and my family.

For all my cousins, aunts and uncles who are the good ones. In other words, the ones who are not self absorbed in their own minds, non materialistic and know I still exist.

Good friends and helpful neighbors.

My country – The United States of America, The Land of the Free… I hope and pray it stays this way.

Armed Forces of The United States of America – these men and women in uniform protect us all every minute of every day.

Rock and Roll – especially Heavy Metal and all of it’s genres.

Punk Rock

Motorhead, Misfits, W.A.S.P. and Slayermy top four.

Lynyrd Skynyrd and their 2009 album – God & Guns

Cheap Trick and ELO

Anthony Bourdain and No Reservations

Ghost Hunters and Ghost Adventures

World Champion New York Yankees and the New York Giants

Planet Earth… the best and only planet we can all live on. If only we all could get along…

I’m very thankful for being introduced to this album by The Everly Brothers, (Don and Phil Everly), as a child. My mother had this album and it was my first introduction to the amazing world of Rock and Roll. This 1958 album was a true enjoyment and will forever be an unreal lifetime memory.

I’m extra thankful for being alive to be thankful for all of the above.

New York Yankees Logo - classic NYI AM A YANKEE FAN. I love my Yankees. Normally, I never mention sports whatsoever on Metal Odyssey, however, tonight is special. The New York Yankees are Major League Baseball’s WORLD CHAMPIONS! I am so proud of the Yankees, 27 World Series titles… wow. Holy Cow!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE NEW YORK YANKEES AND THEIR FANS!!

HIDEKI MATSUI A.K.A. GODZILLA – UNREAL GAME! YANKEE HERO FOREVER!!

TOO MANY NEW YORK YANKEE WORLD SERIES RECORDS TO MENTION!!

GOD BLESS DEREK JETER! A REAL CAPTAIN!

DEREK JETER – 175 CAREER POST SEASON HITS. HOLY COW!

27 WORLD SERIES TITLES! HOLY COW!

ANY MOMENT… A MAGICAL MOMENT AT YANKEE STADIUM!

THANK YOU MR. STEINBRENNER FOR GIVING THE FANS SO MANY GREAT YANKEE PLAYERS OVER THE YEARS!

#1 OWNERSHIP IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL HISTORY – THE STEINBRENNER FAMILY!

HOW SWEEEEET IT IS TO BE A YANKEE FAN!

The Red Sox Nation could not comprehend 27 World Series titles. The Red Sox Nation can continue to groom great ball players for the Yankees… we will always take them. Thank you, Red Sox, for not resigning Johnny Damon, Roger Clemens and Wade Boggs in past years. All three of these great Yankee heroes are Yankees World Series Champions.

Hey, Steven King… repeat after me… NEW YORK YANKEES, WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS.

Hey, Ben Affleck… can you say… NEW YORK YANKEES, WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS? HUH?

Hey, Big Papi… can you say… 27 World Series Championships? I didn’t think so. Try again.

Hey, Jason Varitek… can you say… Jorge Posada has way more World Series rings?

Hey, Curt Schilling… can you say… New York Yankees, 27 World Series Titles? C’mon, try…

WHO’S YOUR DADDY! WHO’S YOUR DADDY! WHO’S YOUR DADDY! WHO’S YOUR DADDY!

THANK YOU PEDRO MARTINEZ, FOR STARTING GAME 6 OF THE 2009 WORLD SERIES! ALL OF US YANKEE FANS KNEW WE COULD COUNT ON YOU!! WHO’S YOUR DADDY?

TRIVIA TIME: HOW MANY WORLD SERIES RINGS DID TED WILLIAMS WIN? UM, “0″. ZERO.

Oh, by the way… say goodbye to the AROD curse, Red Sox Nation. Plus, as a Yankee bonus… the Yankees win their 27th “record” World Series in the first year of their brand new ballpark. Can the Red Sox Nation say – brand new ballpark? Uh, nope. All that the Red Sox Nation knows is their old, decrepit ballpark also known as the “little league field” of Major League Baseball. Fenway Park… it’s a junkyard compared to the NEW Yankee Stadium – home to the WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS.

New York Yankees logo - white on blueWhy have I spent so much time here bugging on the Red Sox Nation? Due to the fact that this same Red Sox Nation has been a cocky, arrogant, wide eyed bunch of band wagon fans that thinks the sun sets and rises over their aging team and junkyard, uh, I mean Fenway Park. Someone remind the three stooges up in Boston, (you know, the owners of the Red Sox), that they need to start dumping some of their AGING ballplayers if they want to even think about competing on the Major League level. Theo who? Where’s Manny? Whatever happened to Nomar? Hey Boston, can you say… GLUM NATION? Or, try this one on for size… JEALOUS NATION? Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, hee, hee, ho, ha, ha, ha. Um, ha, ha again.

NEW YORK YANKEES! WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD! #1! THE VERY BEST! 27 WORLD SERIES TITLES! HOLY COW! NEW YORK YANKEES ROCK!
