CLUTCH Concert Overview: CLUTCH At The Crocodile Rock Cafe, Allentown, PA, December 30, 2012

Clutch - WINO - Saviours - mondo generator - show flyer - Dec - 2012

Stone’s Last Metal Hurrah In Allentown With Metal Buddies Danielle & Lee!

_____________________________________________

CLUTCH – A packed house. No, make that a super-duper packed house to its maximum and (probably) illegal potential. The number of Heavy Rock and Metal fans that jammed into the Crocodile Rock Cafe, in Allentown Pennsylvania, on a very cold Sunday night on December 3oth was above alarming. There were so many people entering The Crocodile Rock Cafe on this night, that it was difficult to distinguish the ID/ticket line from the men’s rest room line! Yes, confusion was an uninvited guest.

My two Metal buddies, Danielle and Lee, picked me up at my house, with plenty of time to spare for seeing this undeniable kick-ass lineup of bands. The three of us were certain we would see WINO, Saviours and Mondo Generator; as well as the highly anticipated headliner of this bill: CLUTCH. Instead, our night of Hard & Heavy Rockin’ jubilation came to a disappointing stop (before CLUTCH hit the stage) due to the size of the unexpected crowd that filled this famous venue.

Apparently, a sold-out CLUTCH show from the Starland Ballroom (Sayreville, New Jersey) was re-scheduled for this same night at the Crocodile Rock Cafe. Both shows were sold-out, hence the over-capacity crowd. Hurricane Sandy did some extensive damage to the Starland Ballroom, that’s why the re-scheduling took place. It would have made more sense to have CLUTCH perform on consecutive nights or on separate dates to accommodate so many ticket holders to “2″ different shows, in my Metal opinion. Shit happens, I guess.CLUTCH - Croc Rock - ticket - December 2012

We ordered and ate some pizza slices at the adjoining restaurant; Lee and I guzzled down some beer (Yuengling Lager), while Danielle smacked down some mixed drinks that were tempting to me. However, I stuck to the brews. As the venue continued to fill, we couldn’t find it in ourselves to even attempt breaking into the line… that’s not Metal. This “line” of fans seemed endless to us. We missed the acoustic set of the legendary WINO and that super sucked. Saviours we did hear in the distance and it broke my Metal heart in two to have missed them as well.

Time was passing and we were getting screwed out of a night of Heavy Rockin’ bliss. Hanging out in the bar and sharing laughs with fellow Metal buddies isn’t a total loss, however. You can’t put a price on hanging out with people who make you feel good. As a bonus, I got introduced to mutual friends of Danielle and Lee’s and they were downright cool as hell. As the venue became a sea of humans all seeking the same Metal fix we were, I became worried that I wouldn’t see any band perform live at all!

Mondo Generator came on stage and that was it! The three of us finally were able to get into the venue. Lee fought his way to the merch table (on the side area of the stage) to buy himself a CLUTCH tee. Whoa! That took Metal courage. Lee is a bona-fide badass anyways. Danielle was nowhere to be found for a while, she and a friend took off into the crowd. That didn’t surprise me, cause Danielle is one badass gal. She could probably kick my ass without trying. I ventured back out into the bar cause I just couldn’t breathe. Really. I’ve been to more club shows than I can count over the years and this night was like being packed into a cardboard box of sweaty humans… with the heat turned on high. Unreal.

Eventually Danielle and Lee met up with me back in the bar. More Yuengling Lagers were consumed while good-times laughter swirled around us. As a steady flow of battle-scarred fans began to file out of the venue, their chatter was universal; “can’t breathe in there”, “never saw a crowd like this here, it’s scary” and “can’t move in there” were common remarks I heard.

Clutch - band logo!!

By the time CLUTCH hit the stage, we were all back inside the venue; no more than fifteen feet from the exit door to the bar. I actually had a prime view of the stage from standing at the end of the (inside) bar, with no obstructions, save for the cool bartender gal that served up the Yuengling Lager to me! Whoa. At this point of the night, I was getting overcome with a (rather welcomed) beer blitz that was top-tier and couldn’t write down the set-list that CLUTCH hammered out if I tried. Metal be thy name and let the good times roll! Hey, as they say back in Burrville, Connecticut: beer happens.

I’ll say this much, CLUTCH kicked legitimate, 100%, potent, high-octane, F’n unreal, Hard and Heavy Rockin’ ass on that December night. Holy Metal shit and tell all the villagers, CLUTCH is a band that was born to play live! If you look up the definition for Heavy Rockin’ Thunder, you’re gonna read: CLUTCH. If you look up the definition for CLUTCH, you’re gonna read: kicks severe and thunderous Heavy Rockin’ ass. It’s that simple. Seeing and hearing CLUTCH perform live was worth every penny of admission.

During my entire live CLUTCH experience, I had the feeling that the entire venue was gonna cave into one gigantic sinkhole; all due to the heavy as fuckin’ hell Rock ‘N’ Roll that CLUTCH was administering upon the thousands of fans inside the Crocodile Rock Cafe. What a band. What a night. Hanging out with Metal buddies Danielle and Lee, experiencing live CLUTCH and way too many Yuengling Lagers. What more can Stone ask for? Metal be thy name.

____________________________________________________________

I did buy some CLUTCH vinyl after the show and bought Danielle a CD. The merch table had their 2004 album Blast Tyrant (on double vinyl) for sale and I bought it! Whoa! The three of us hung out for a while in the back parking lot, waiting for CLUTCH to come out. We finally gave up around 1:00 a.m. and decided to call it a night.

Clutch - Blast Tyrant - promo cover pic!________________________________________________

Due to my relocating to Ohio, this CLUTCH show marked the last time I’d be raising Metal hell at the Crocodile Rock Cafe. I’m gonna miss that place, with all the Grand Metal memories I’ve had there. I’m gonna miss Danielle and Lee more though… cause Metal buddies like them are without question: priceless.

This post is dedicated to my 2 Metal buddies for life: Danielle and Lee. I thank and love you both.

Critical Praise for A Eulogy For The Damned

“OG simply don’t put a foot wrong from start to finish. Near total perfection! 9/10” — Metal Hammer UK

“A respectfully powerful slice of heavy fuckin’ rock! 4/5” – Terrorizer

“Long-haired limeys, maximum riffage and turbo doom. Biker rock. From England. And it’s pretty awesome.” – Decibel

“Overall, their first record for Candlelight is pretty damn fantastic. Rockin’, riff-tastic and possibly the best record from start to finish that they’ve released yet.” – Popdose

“Album of the Month!” — Sweden Rock Magazine

“A truly amazing piece of work? This is absolutely the case! 4/5” – Molten Magazine

“With a sound that splits the difference between Sabbath and Motörhead, ORANGE GOBLIN serves up a potent dose of ’70s-style metal on A Eulogy For The Damned. Gloomy doom and punk power have seldom sounded so good together.” – Metal Underground

“Apart from the anxiously-awaited end of the world, I can’t imagine a scenario in which 2012 finishes and ORANGE GOBLIN’s A Eulogy for the Damned isn’t among the high points. Highly recommended for beginners and converts alike.” – The Obelisk

“I highly encourage you stop what you are doing and run right out and purchase it. 9.8/10” – Pure Grain Audio

ROYAL THUNDER “CVI” – Unreal Is The Word And This Heavy Album MUST Be Heard!

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, stoner metal with tags , , , , , , on May 10, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

ROYAL THUNDER – Ann Wilson of Heart. (the late) Janis Joplin. Melissa Etheridge. Bonnie Raitt. Joan Jett. Mlny Parsonz. These women of Rock all have one essential talent in common; they all sing from the heart and Rock ‘N Roll soul, while singing with believable passion. I also revere each of their voices too. Who is Mlny Parsonz your asking? Mlny is the vocalist and bassist for Royal Thunder. Mlny and Royal Thunder will be bigger than they probably ever fathomed… so they better get used to the accolades that will be coming their way.

I seriously believe a band like Royal Thunder only comes around every several years. Their debut full-length album, CVI, is easily one of the best albums I’ve listened to in years; crossing all Rock genres. Royal Thunder’s sound weaves Hard Rock, Metal, some psychedelia and meaty Stoner Metal with a thunderous vibe of Classic Rock. If there is that one can’t miss band you need to catch onto in 2012, it’s Royal Thunder; and that’s a sincere fact I am delivering to you.

Lyrically personal, emotional and dark, the songs on CVI are all equally sensational; while both the vocals of Mlny and the music are an astonishing match. If there is one legendary vocalist that Mlny is channeling in, that legend would be Janis Joplin. Regardless of comparisons, Mlny’s vocals are as refreshingly new like a long-awaited rain shower, during a late Summer’s drought.

_______________________________

The band plays their music with a driving passion as well, again, both vocals and music compliment each other on CVI and it’s a thrill a second to listen to. With a sonic retrospective flair being echoed throughout CVI, Royal Thunder still uncannily comes across as relevant with nary a remote hint of pretension. Even though Royal Thunder hasn’t invented the Rock ‘N Roll wheel, they didn’t try to reinvent it either on CVI; and that’s something many other up and coming bands should take note of.

Overall and (most importantly) consistently memorable throughout, CVI comes musically packaged as completeSleeping Witch and the opening track Parsonz Curse offer up substantial riffs and enough heavy texture to make any warm-blooded Metalhead jump for Metal joy. Even when Mlny and band tone things down during songs such as South Of Somewhere and Minus, they’re still heavy with the atmosphere of what’s to come next and what they’re all about.

I am very excited about Royal Thunder and their new album CVI; I imagine it obviously shows. What I’m also excited about is this band (albeit a conscientious maneuver or not) has connected the dots of Heavy Metal, Rock and Hard Rock’s past and written songs that bubbles over with admirably heavy substance in 2012. In a world of fake mainstream Rock and Pop crap that suffocates and kidnaps our youth and misinformed, real talent will always surface to the top and save us all, the crème de la crème which in this instance is… Royal Thunder.

ROYAL THUNDER:

Mlny Parsonz – bass & vocals

Josh Weaver – lead guitar

Lee Smith – drums

Josh Coleman – rhythm guitar

CVI release dates: May 22 (U.S.), May 28 (UK), June 1 (Ger/Benelux) and June 4 (World). CVI will be available on CD and 2xLP and of course digital, via Relapse Records.

As previously announced, Southern Lord Recordings will release a deluxe reissue of one the most essential albums of modern times - Dopesmoker from Stoner Metal icons, SLEEP. HIGH ON FIRE – Album title translation: “The Mysteries of the Worm”. Well, it isn’t a mystery to me that High On Fire is one hell of a Metal band. De Vermis Mysteriis is one album in 2012 that I’m looking forward to hearing, you can bet your last Metal dollar on that one. Apparently, this is a pretty deep concept album which involves time travel. You can read more about this album’s intriguing concept by visiting the High On Fire website: http://www.highonfire.net/

High On Fire are steadily cementing themselves within the legendary Metal halls of Metal history, in my Metal opinion. Matt Pike. ‘Nuff said. De Vermis Mysteriis will be released on April 3rd, 2012, via eOne Music.

PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 9 - Royal Thunder, the Atlanta four-piece Brooklyn Vegan described as “Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde fronting Black Sabbath,” have completed recording their debut album, CVI.  The album will be released on CD/2xLP/Digital on May 22 via Relapse Records.
__________________________________________________________________________
“We poured all of our hard work and passion into this 10-song LP,” says vocalist/bass player Mlny Parsonz of the band’s mid-2011 recording sessions at Aria Recording Studio in Marietta, Ga. “We saw highs and lows along the way, but in the end we made it. We made something we are so proud of. We look back on our past efforts and take with us the good, and strive to keep going and growing. We can’t wait to see what the future holds and we hope this new album is an inspiration and light in the lives of everyone who listens to it.”
_________________________________________________________________________
The band, which includes the aforementioned Parsonz as well as founder Josh Weaver (guitar), Lee Smith (drums) and Josh Coleman (guitar) will join Black Tusk for a half dozen dates leading up to performances at SXSW (specific showcase information to be announced shortly). Royal Thunder will also perform at this Saturday’s Scion Relapse Showcase at The Roxy in Los Angeles.
_________________________________________________________________________
Royal Thunder released a self-titled EP in 2010 which won praise from a wide variety of outlets including Paste Magazine (“blues-infused rock’n'roll, wrapped in protective barbed-metal packaging”), NPR (“a revved-up Southern hard-rocker that howls like Led Zeppelin astride a psychedelic unicorn”) and Terrorizer (“‘Royal Thunder’ grabs you right from the first listen”).

ORANGE GOBLIN – Behind-The-Scenes Footage Of The “Red Tide Rising” Video Brought To You By Noisecreep

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, stoner metal with tags , , , , , , on January 28, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Today Noisecreep premieres behind-the-scenes footage of ORNAGE GOBLIN’s “Red Tide Rising” video, the opening track off the band’s forthcoming A Eulogy For The Damned full-length, set for North American release on February 14, 2012. The video clip is loosely based on H.P. Lovecraft stories and was shot in a series of dilapidated buildings around the UK.

Elaborated vocalist Ben Ward of the video: “We made the terrible decision to make the video for ‘Red Tide Rising’ the day after the London Christmas show so it meant we all had to be up bright and early, with very severe hangovers and head down to the New Forest. Luckily it was a bright, sunny day so everyone was in good spirits and the production crew went to work setting up at the location, which was some sort of abandoned army barracks in the middle of nowhere! It could have doubled as the location for Hostel 4!

In the meantime, the band was dragged halfway across Dorset to do a photo shoot whilst being attacked by rampaging horses! When we returned, thankful to be alive, we were ready to go and the recording process was very pleasant and quite a lot of fun! We already knew that the footage of us would be mixed with some animation that we’d acquired the use of so we weren’t required to do anything too ambitious, just repeatedly go over the track imagining we were playing it to 100,000 people at Wembley stadium! Fuelled by tea and biscuits we got the job done and the results look great!”

Check out the making-of video at THIS LOCATION.

A Eulogy For The Damned is ORANGE GOBLIN’s seventh studio album and first for Candlelight Records. The ten-track offering was recorded at The Animal Farm studio in South London, UK, produced and engineered by Jamie Dodd and mastered by two-time Grammy-nominated Pink Floyd engineer Andy Jackson at Tube Mastering.

CORROSION OF CONFORMITY – ‘Corrosion Of Conformity’ – Get Ready Cause This Heady Album Transports The Very Heavy, Very Steady

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, sludge metal, stoner metal with tags , , , , , , on January 23, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

CORROSION OF CONFORMITY – On February 28th, 2012, the 8th studio album from North Carolina’s legendary Corrosion Of Conformity will be released via Candlelight Records. This self-titled album is 13 songs that are undisputedly heavy and steady from front to back. Woodroe “Woody” Weatherman (guitar), Mike Dean (bass, vocals) and Reed Mullin (drums, vocals) have delivered a thunder stomp of an album that’s speed fueled and one fans have been yearning for since 2005′s In The Arms Of God.

As with 1985′s COC gem, Animosity, this power trio is what makes the album a necessity. Always meshing together brilliantly the sounds of Stoner, Sludge, Crossover Thrash and a slice of Hardcore Punk, COC always was and shall forever remain as an American Heavy Metal achievement to my ears. If America ever needed an answer to Motörhead, then that answer is Corrosion Of Conformity. Wow, I’ve always wanted to write that and it felt great. Metal be thy name.

At the core of this comeback album from COC is pure heavy Rock ‘N Roll in all of it’s non-mainstream glory. The molasses thick guitar riffs that cascade from all 13 songs are just part of the chug-a-chug Heavy Metal party that this trio invites your ears, mind and soul into. The Doom exemplifies this party and reveals the many Metal sides to COC, from Stoner to… Doom. Rat City and Leeches are Punk songs played the heavy COC way and potent high-points on this electrifying album.

The Moneychangers will have any fan of Motörhead realizing why I liken this band as the American equivalent to Lemmy’s gang. Part Punk, part  Stoner on speed drive, this song summons up all the reasons why COC is so interchangeable musically. Each song on COC brings something new to hear, there are no parts where you swear you’ve heard them earlier on. This makes for all the more reason why COC is difficult to stereotype as a band and corner into any specific Metal genre. An achievement unto itself that is for this (gasp) fun band to immerse your ears into.

Returning to that all sacred word – heavy, this is the one constant that COC illuminates with, on an all fantastical level. In an impressive retrospective approach to heaviness, COC never steers away from that sound of pioneering Heavy Metal. The level of relevance still comes across so astounding on this album due to COC playing so damn real. What We Become, with its Heavy Metal attitude and near anthem like power, could be just as memorable and befitting in the mid 80′s as it is in 2012.

Corrosion Of Conformity is both an album and band that administers Heavy Metal with no gimmicks or artificial flavors. I can’t express more openly, just how psyched-out I’ve been about this new COC album. There is nothing for you to ponder in regards to purchasing COC. Buy it, play it LOUD and if this new COC doesn’t serve you right… then you’re a constipated Pop Rock elitist.

ORANGE GOBLIN – ‘A Eulogy For The Damned’: This Album Is Mandatory Metal, My Metal Brethren

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, stoner metal with tags , , , , , , on December 24, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

ORANGE GOBLIN – They’re back. Orange Goblin. On February 14, 2012, the seventh studio album from one of Britain’s finest Metal bands of the 20th and 21st Centuries will be released on Candlelight Records. Their new album A Eulogy For The Damned is such an amazing listen from front to back, that I’ve had to throw cold water on my face to make certain I’m not imagining it all. Seriously. From the album’s rip-it-up opener of Red Tide Rising, to the closer A Eulogy To The Damned, there is absolutely not one boring micro-second to hear on this album.

Is this new Orange Goblin album perfect? Damn it’s near close to Metal perfection as you can get. I cannot get enough of what I’m hearing on A Eulogy For The Damned. Orange Goblin reveals their inner linings of Stoner meets Classic Hard Rock vibes, courtesy of countless riffs and guitar parts, with bass and drums resonating all great things about exhilarating rhythm and grooves… and this is still Metal. Orange Goblin takes their Metal sound to a heightened level of awe, on such tracks as Stand For Something and Save Me From Myself, with a combination of retrospective Rockin’ thunder and unbridled Hard and Heavy relevance.

A Eulogy For The Damned epitomizes just how a Metal album can come across and sound, when a band doesn’t over-indulge in their own creativity or skills. This is a Metal album, only it’s Metal that doesn’t trip over its own feet. Even repetition on the closing track A Eulogy To The Damned is music genius within this song’s structure. I honestly found myself disappointed that this album has ten songs. Then again, these ten songs make the listening experience so befittingly special. Maybe other bands can learn a lesson here from Orange Goblin and keep their filler tracks where they belong… in a box labeled “work in progress”.

The vocals of Ben Ward and total musicianship of this band roars with authority, as an undeniable sound and feel of keeping it real is a non-stop listening experience on this album. If it’s your goal to buy amazing Metal in 2012, you can kick-start this goal into reality by buying A Eulogy For The Damned. Of course Orange Goblin fans and Metal fans will dive right into this new album, yet Stoner, Hard Rock and even Classic Rock fans are certain to find numerous slices of A Eulogy For The Damned quite damn appealing.

ORANGE GOBLIN:

Ben Ward – vocals

Joe Hoare – guitar

Martyn Millard – bass

Chris Turner – drums

A EULOGY FOR THE DAMNED – Track Listing:

Red Tide Rising

Stand For Something

Acid Trial

The Filthy And The Few

Save Me From Myself

STINKING LIZAVETA: Eclectic Philadelphia Trio Sign To Exile On Mainstream

Posted in agro rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, sludge metal, stoner metal with tags , , , , , , on November 22, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

STINKING

LIZAVETA

Infamous Philly Avant/Agro Rock trio STINKING LIZAVETA have proudly joined forces with Germany’s Exile On Mainstream Records for the release of their forthcoming seventh full-length album. STINKING LIZAVETA’s near legendary cult status and blend of improvisational and otherworldly post-jazz/rock/freakout style now hitching to the exceptionally diverse purveyance of all forms of Rock that Exile On Mainstream’s roster already bears, is an ideal alliance and both sides are extremely excited about the signing.

Stated Exile On Mainstream owner Andreas Kohl on the signing: “I am thrilled and very enthusiastic about the Stinking ship steering into our harbor! This band has always been one of my all-time favorites since I started working for and with them for the first time approximately 100 years ago as PR dude when III came out. Now they are signed to this label and I’m one step closer to personal heaven. There isn’t many more on this stairway. I am happy. Just über-fucking happy. Welcome STINKING LIZAVETA!”

The new album from STINKING LIZAVETA will be released in the fall of 2012. More information on the album will be released over the coming weeks. This week the band launched a Kickstarter page to raise funds to help get this album off the ground. The page will remain active until mid-December; check it out now RIGHT HERE.

Since 1994 the name STINKING LIZAVETA has made its way well beyond the crusty punk and indie clubs in the band’s West Philadelphia stomping grounds where they first tore into the music scene. The trio’s instrumental, organic fusion of post-jazz, progressive rock, punk, world music, sludge and whatever else you might care to attach to their plainly distinctive resonance has become a cult phenomenon to fans of all forms of interesting heavy music the world over. Having released six full-lengths albums to date — several self-released and the others released by Tolotta, At A Loss — in addition to a plethora of EP’s, demos, compilation appearances.

While STINKING LIZAVETA’s recordings are fascinating on their own, the band is even well known for their brilliant, energetic live shows. The trio’s explosive energy is guaranteed to hit you like an electrified avalanche every time, in front of an audience of 12 or 1200, propelled through a modest setup, comprised of a drum kit, electric guitar and upright electric bass. They have toured relentlessly throughout North America, Europe and beyond over the past seventeen years alongside eclectic rock acts of all kinds along with some of the biggest and most respected names in the rock, stoner and sludge scenes including Clutch, Corrosion of Conformity, The Rollins Band, Fugazi, Zeni Geva, Today Is The Day, Weedeater, The Hidden Hand, Don Vito, The Antikaroshi, End of Level Boss, Beehoover and more. Watch for them to take to the road again throughout the coming year as they create their forthcoming seventh opus.

STINKING LIZAVETA is:

Yanni Papadopoulos – guitar

The legacy of Scott “Wino” Weinrich in the world of heavy music is indisputable and ever evolving, and here he teams up with Conny Ochs, a songwriter so pure and honest in his output that he seems to be the perfect partner for the straightforward Weinrich. The two met for the first time in 2010 when Conny was supporting Wino on his acoustic solo tour promoting his acclaimed solo album, Adrift.

Through music they discovered a very similar approach to life and art, and a shared wisdom in creating music. It really seemed like two souls becoming one after they got to know each other. Together the two wrote, performed and recorded an incredible set of soulful tunes that speak for themselves, as well as a Townes Van Zandt cover. The artwork contains drawings by both Weinrich and Ochs, and follows the dedicated and deeply personal approach of the whole album. View the cover art for Heavy Kingdom here.
