THUNDERWAR – Poland’s Thunderwar saw their debut (4 song) EP, The Birth Of Thunder, release back in 2013. I do declare, without any reasonable doubt, that Thunderwar will be a Death Metal band to reckon with for years to come. I hope, anyways. It’s always a thrill, when an astute underground Death Metal band such as Thunderwar crosses my Metal path. In my Metal opinion, these Polish Death Metal dudes are really good at what they do.

Thunderwar plays their brand of Death Metal on the melodic side as well; still, it’s Death Metal, in the European vein. In other Metal words, that means this band kicks unadulterated Death Metal ass. With their instrumental title track, The Birth Of Thunder, a mature musical aptitude abounds from Thunderwar; displaying their taste for the splendid and atmospheric listen. I believe I hear a touch of flamenco guitar in this title track too. I dunno, what do I know. Whoa.

I realize this sounds cliché, however, I do wish that this wasn’t an EP and instead a full-length album. Yes, I do dig Thunderwar. Any fan of Amon Amarth should become an instant fan of this band. I sincerely would love to see Thunderwar keep their Metal momentum going and become a household name among the proud world-community of Death Metal addicts. Metal be thy name. – Stone

MAMMOTH GRINDER “Underworlds” – A Metal Album To Pulverize Your Brain Cells To!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall4

MAMMOTH GRINDER – Back on July 23rd, 2013, Mammoth Grinder saw their third studio album, Underworlds, released via 20 Buck Spin. From Austin, Texas, Mammoth Grinder fuses Metal (From Death to Thrash), Grind and Punk into a steamroller of Earth crunching sound. Regardless of sub-genres, the all-encompassing sound from Mammoth Grinder, that floods my brain is Metal. For me, Underworlds is one of the best Metal albums to revisit from 2013. Underworlds has that staying power for me to talk about for a very, very long time. Whoa.

If I had to sum up Mammoth Grinder with only one phrase, I believe it would go like this: Mammoth Grinder are Motörhead, Corrosion Of Conformity and Down on potent steroids. I actually just chuckled out loud as I wrote that phrase. Aw hell, it’s true, to my spent and quasi-aging ears anyways. I’ll definitely state that your Metal CD or (gulp) mp3 collection is below average, if Mammoth Grinder is not represented in it. Metal be thy name and… UUAAGH! – Stone

Underworlds Track Listing: Underworlds, Wraparound Eyes, Revenge, Paragon Pusher, Barricades, Cogs In The Machine, Roperide, Breeding, Born In A Bag, Moral Crux

EMPIRE OF RATS – S/T Debut From Columbus Ohio’s Hardcore Band Is: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

EMPIRE OF RATS – The self-titled debut album from Columbus Ohio’s Empire Of Rats was released back on October 31st, 2013, via A389 Recordings. This Hardcore group has taken their inner disgust for society’s status quo, annoying antagonists and whatever else pisses them off, funneling it all into fuel for a freaking impressive debut for (what’s left of) my eardrums. Empire Of Rats don’t screw around with their sonic brutality. If its legit, underground Hardcore that you crave, Empire Of Rats serves it up with ferocity. It’s that easy to explain.

Everything about this debut is pummeling, with the exception of the 1:05 intro to Early Mourning, which boasts a calming acoustic guitar number before succumbing to a mid-tempo (all band) Metal instrumental; an instrumental that reminds me of Metallica’s Ride The Lightning days. Overall, the vocals, musicianship, energy and rage on this album are what diehard Hardcore fans yearn for and I highly endorse Empire Of Rats. Metal be thy name. – Stone

Track Listing: Leeches, Another Minute In Hell, Bottomless Pit, Untitled, Society’s Zero, Rats Reign, Sinking, Little From The World, We’re Dead, Exposed, Early Mourning

IZEGRIM “Congress Of The Insane” – An Insanely Grand Death/Thrash Album You MUST Know About!

5 Metal Fists Out Of 5!

Metal Fists 5 Metal Odyssey

IZEGRIM – This is a Dutch Death/Thrash Metal band that every member of our Metal community MUST know about! Fronted by vocalist/bassist Marloes, IZEGRIM’s sonic punishment can very well destroy our Earth’s geomagnetic field and we can all start kissing our asses goodbye now. Seriously. IZEGRIM is that freaking heavy and scalding of a Death/Thrash troupe and Congress Of The Insane (Listenable Records) is Metal proof positive! The album cover artwork is beyond incredible too.

As for the subject matter heard lyrically, on Congress Of The Insane, I’ll leave it to Marloes herself, as she has previously stated: “Congress of the Insane” features a concept based on the evil in the deceiving human nature. “Nowadays everyone seems normal until you get to know them. Some freaks are here, they’re real and they are alive!” The gathering of those disclosed society monsters can be depicted as a “Congress of the Insane.”

Crushing all that comes into its path, Congress Of The Insane is an extreme gem among Metal releases from 2013. The vocals of Marloes are potent enough to be considered a weapon of mass destruction. With a killer rhythm section and scathing duo guitars, IZEGRIM have proven to me, beyond a reasonable Metal doubt, that they are one of my favorite Metal bands within our Metal galaxy. Metal be thy name. – Stone

New Album In The Works For 2015 Release

French progressive metal keyboardist and composer, VIVIEN LALU, is ecstatic to announce his new official sponsorship by Roland Keyboards. Having relied heavily on the brand for his entire career thus far, this new endorsement is a major breakthrough for the artist.

Stated LALU on his union with the company: “After twenty years of using their keyboards I can now say that I’m proud to have joined the Roland family! I want to thank Roland Japan for the great welcome, and look forward to present you their amazing new products.”

Lalu - Atomic Ark - promo cover pic - 2013

In September 2013, Sensory Records released LALU’s newest solo album, Atomic Ark. Having raked in rave reviews from international media outlets, the expansive but direct delivery of this talented songwriter is at its finest yet on this cinematic masterpiece, boasting an array of expansive elements with a dark edge. The opus was fully conceived and composed by LALU, the musician having enlisted an all-star lineup of vocalist Martin LeMar (Mekong Delta), bassist Mike LePond (SymphonyX), guitarist Simone Mularoni (DGM) and drummer Virgil Donati (PlanetX), in addition to countless guest contributions, to complete the album. Alongside the release of his new masterwork,VIVIEN LALU also announced that half of his royalties for Atomic Ark were to be donated directly to Paris/NYC-based animal rescue organization ALERTE SOS!

LALU is currently immersed in the creation of new material for his full-length follow-up to Atomic Arkfor Sensory Records, having already confirmed its title as Orkeystra. Contrary to his Oniric Metaldebut and Atomic Ark, the impending Orkeystra will venture into new territory by featuring multiple singers in addition to Martin LeMar, who usually handles all vocals. New information on the next chapter in the LALU lineage will be released throughout the rest of the year in preparation for its release in 2015.

For now fans can order Atomic Ark now direct from Sensory/The Laser’s Edge HERE.

Critical Praise:

“The catchy bits will be stuck in your head for days on end, the heavy parts will never not make you bang your head, the beautiful parts will always be touching, the ethereal and dream-like parts will always evoke images in your head, and the musicianship will never not impress.” – Metal Injection

“The album is driven by Lalu’s sense of fine-tuned technicality and majestic flair.” – PopMatters

“…blistering guitar solos, soaring vocals and complex song arrangements… The musicianship is top-notch and there is a nice diversity to the songwriting…a progressive powerhouse.” – About.com

ORBWEAVER – Exploratory Death Metal Behemoths Issue Winter Tour Update

Posted in Death Metal, experimental metal, Heavy Metal, Metal, metal bands, metal music, Music, news, rock music, rock music news, world news with tags , , , , , , , on March 3, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

Orbweaver - 2014 Winter Tour - promo flyer - 3290

Florida exploratory Death Metal behemoths, ORBWEAVER, recently waged audio Armageddon upon the US with a twenty-date run of live takeovers alongside fellow Sunshine State sludge slingers, Shroud Eater.

Relays guitar demoness, Sally Gates, from the van: “The ‘Wintour’ has been excellent so far. We’ve had a great response at all the shows and some very generous hospitality. A couple of highlights from the road including stopping in New Orleans in the lead up to Mardi Gras. We had a massive sci-fi-themed parade go right past the venue. There were even Dr. Who costumes and floats! We also had an archery challenge in Pensacola, New Zealand vs Colombia vs USA. Scores are still being debated…It’s great to be on the road with our good friends Shroud Eater, and the bonus of touring in the Winter is that the van still smells fresh! Thanks to everyone who’s come out to our shows so far, and hope to see the rest of you on the road!”

ORBWEAVER is currently touring in support of their cranium-crumbling Strange Transmissions From The Neuralnomicon EP, released last Summer. Recorded at Miami’s Pinecrust Studios with Jonathan Nunez of Torche and mixed/mastered with Brian Elliot at Mana Recording Studios (Hate Eternal, Cannibal Corpse, Goatwhore, Exhumed), on Strange Transmissions From The NeuralnomiconORBWEAVER travels far beyond conventional genre realms with a kaleidoscopic fusion of psychedelia, noise, and a distorted rendering of progressive death metal. Perpetually shape-shifting between these impulsive, trance-like elements, ORBWEAVER manifests interplanetary pandemonium reminiscent of a Zappa-esque brand of controlled and violently elegiac chaos.

Orbweaver - 2013 - EP - Promo Cover Pic

The unsung gem continues to win the approval of adventures fans and critics alike. In a perfect 5/5 review The New Noise boasts, “ORBWEAVER have definitely blended the right mix of atmosphere with the right mix of experimental technical death metal to make a listen that is superbly solid and second to none. Whatever you want to call this stuff, I definitely hope to hear more ‘alien metal’ in the future.” Adds Metal Roos, “From the giant aliens on the EP sleeve, to the freak show, drug crazed blends of musicianship, this EP is an absolute ball-tearer…”

Sea of Tranquility, in a 4/5 rating, calls the head-scratcher of a record “big and oozing and unusual.” Quizzical listeners are encouraged to check out Palm Beach New Times’ recent interview series with Gates, guitarist/vocalist Randy Piro and bassist Jason Ledgard about their rigs, influences and obscure sonic handiwork HERE.

Following their most widely received LP to date with the 2013-released, The Fleshland, Tokyo, Japan’s COFFINS have confirmed a new American invasion this Spring.

COFFINS will bring their diseased, suffocating death-doom decimation back to this side of the Pacific once again in May with a special mini-tour, marking a four-year gap since their previous stateside visit. Bringing forth bulldozing hymns from The Fleshland in addition to their brutal back-catalog of mid-paced grave digging metal, in addition to their recently revamped lineup, beginning May 18th, COFFINS will plunder Chicago, Cleveland, Brooklyn and Philadelphia before closing down the run with their return to Maryland Deathfest in Baltimore on May 22nd, their first time storming MDF since their set at the 2010 edition of the event. COFFINS will be provided with support from Chicago death’n’rollers, Bones, on the tour dates leading up to Deathfest.

Coffins - The Fleshland - promo cover pic - 2013

Their first LP for Relapse Records, The Fleshland shows COFFINS smashing down everything in their path with nine new grisly tracks, laying down over forty-five minutes of low-end, sludge-infiltrated, plodding, doom, captured with some of the best production values in the band’s meaty catalog of carnage, recorded at Tokyo’s Noise Room Studio with engineer Shigenori Kobayashi, and produced by Bungo Uchino and the rest of COFFINSThe Fleshland is available on CD, download and 2xLP. Stream the entire album and order all versions HERE.

 Critical Praise:

“Tokyo’s Coffins have been at it steadily for nearly two decades, never bringing the tempos above a deathly lurch and unironically keeping it sick/staying brutal.” – Decibel

“…Japanese death metal yakuza Coffins have carved out a long and fruitful career by out-Autopsying Autopsy.” – Pitchfork

4.5 METAL Fists Out Of 5!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall4Half - Metal Fist - metal odyssey

UNTIMELY DEMISE are from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. Thrash Metal and Death Metal collide in a fireball of gargantuan glory, on Systematic Eradication; with healthy slices of True and Speed Metal adding to the Metal delicacy! Untimely Demise is, in my Metal opinion, a Metal band that has an enormous cross-over appeal to Metal fans of widespread Metal tastes. I’m certain the majority shall agree, the cover artwork for Systematic Eradication kicks quantum ass. Ed Repka is an artistic Metal genius.

With plenty of melodic guitar solos and groove infested rhythm throughout, Systematic Eradication is a Metal release from 2013 that must be highlighted here on Metal Odyssey. This Untimely Demise album comes across with such a genuine attack of Thrash sound and energy; I cannot resist listening to Systematic Eradication, in its entirety, each time I reach for it! Vocally and musically impressive, as ALL eight songs flow seamlessly together, with each song having ample Metal uniqueness of structure and enjoyability. A fabulous Metal album! Metalfistredbckgrndsmall4Half - Metal Fist - metal odyssey

COLDSTEEL – With five songs of blistering, American made Thrash Metal, COLDSTEEL gets ‘er done with their 2013 release: America Idle. The duo guitars of Eddie Campbell and Joe Shavel are a Thrash force, the vocals of Troy Norr is a Thrash force and the rhythm section of Doug Odell (bass) and Hal Aponte are the Thrashing icing on the Metal freaking cake.

These seasoned warriors of Thrash Metal, from New York, New York, have paid their dues and exemplify all things kick-ass about underground Thrash Metal in America. With an old school nod to the greats of the genre, COLDSTEEL have always pulled it off in a genuine, Thrashing style as an original. For me NOT to get my ass up and Thrash about, while I’m cranking up America Idle, (at home, not in the car), is a rarity. COLDSTEEL will ignite your veins, brain and nervous system to MOSH the F*CK OUT! Metal be thy name. – Stone

4 Metal Fists Out Of 5!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall4

Looking back on 2013, there were many, many great Metal albums released; Metal albums that should always be hailed here, on Metal Odyssey. One such album is The Rise Of Resistance and the Power Metal brilliance of Heilbronn, Germany’s Circle Of Silence. This is a Power Metal album that MUST be heard, to understand it’s true potent thunder!

Yes, once again, we have album cover artwork that matches the Metal heard within like a Metal glove! Nick on vocals comes across as the ever confident and eloquent Metal frontman, as he exhibits an attitude and grandiose vibe of pure might, with every note. The duo guitar fretwork of Tobias and Chris is a sensation to take in; with the rhythm section of Björn (bass) and Pit (drums) only exemplifies why Circle Of Silence is a Power Metal force to adhere to.

Released via Abstatt, Germany’s Massacre Records, The Rise Of Resistance is just one of many numerous Metal gems that this legendary record label offered in 2013. Any rabid Power Metal and/or True Metal fan’s album collection is amiss without this recent Circle Of Silence offering. Circle Of Silence = Metal. Period. What makes any album memorable are the songs and Circle Of Silence surely has them on The Rise Of Resistance. Metal be thy name. – Stone

Detroit, Michigan-based metallers BATTLECROSS will be joining Canada’s Protest The Hero as direct support on the band’s spring US tour, set to commence March 1st in Buffalo. Tickets went on sale Friday, January 24th.

Guitarist Tony Asta comments:BATTLECROSS is very excited to hit the road with Protest The Hero! They seem like a very successful, humble group of guys who don’t take things too seriously yet are serious about the business — a good role model for all modern bands and we can’t wait to get to know them on the road. Oh yeah and they’re shredders! Being direct support is a huge honor and we won’t let anyone down. This is a very unique tour package and we can’t wait to play to new crowds as well as expose some of our fans to bands they may not have seen yet. See you all in the road this spring!”

BATTLECROSS War Of Will – Critical Praise:

“Metallica-approved thrashers…catchy and direct-the secret behind BATTLECROSS songs is that they’re short and not so sweet.” - Revolver Magazine

“The overall result falls somewhere between the sheer aggression of traditional thrash and In Flames’ sense of humanity, with nods to the technical ecstasy of metal’s founding fathers along the way.” - Metal Hammer Magazine (UK)

BATTLECROSS sound like the bastard offspring of Kreator, Children Of Bodom and Dragonforce…metal fans will lap this up like a cat with a bowl of cream.” - Big Cheese Magazine (UK)

Slave Zero = Disambiguated Visionary - promo cover pic

5 METAL Fists Out Of 5!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall5

SLAVE ZERO – Back on November 10th, 2013, Ireland’s SLAVE ZERO released their EP: Disambiguated Visionary. Man, it’s a killer and I’m not exaggerating one minuscule bit. This fantastically talented Metal band utilizes the elements of Death Metal, Grindcore, Hardcore and Progressive Metal in such a grand fashion that it scorches my brain! Hell yes, SLAVE ZERO can easily be tagged as an Extreme Metal juggernaut.

To say this release is a MUST for fans of the heaviest Metal genres known is a gross understatement. ALL underground and Extreme Metal fans should be required to own this EP from SLAVE ZERO. My eyes nearly pop out of my skull, as I listen to all 5 songs on Disambiguated Visionary; honestly, that’s what it feels like! How can I explain it any better than that?

Slave Zero - band promo pic - 2013 - #377

The vocals are  psychotic, guttural, demonic and blistering, so choose your favorite or all of the above! Musically, this EP is an explosion of Metal sound that ripped into my face and left me hitting the repeat button for more self-inflicted Metal battery. Lightning fast Metal, Extreme, Grinding and insanely addicting is this EP and SLAVE ZERO are to be reckoned with. Metal be thy name.

* SLAVE ZERO were formed back in 2000 and have shared the Metal stage with Metal warriors the likes of: Hatebreed, Exodus, Cephalic Carnage, Soilent Green, Cattle Decapitation and Desecration.

Stryper - No More Hell To Pay - promo cover pic

#1

STRYPER – No More Hell To Pay

Stryper gave to their fans, arguably their best studio album ever. With added pristine touches of relevant heaviness, melodies and goose bump inducing vocal harmonies, Stryper delivered 12 top-tier songs with No More Hell To Pay. This inspiring Metal album from Stryper is not just #1 for 2013, it’s an audio personal power tool, here at the Metal Odyssey headquarters. Metal be thy name.

Stryper - promo band pic - #77 - 2013

______________________________

Admittedly, this year’s Metal album releases were enormously better than I ever expected. From the underground Metal bands to those Metal     bands breaking onto the mainstream charts, our Metal family had a victorious and flourishing year that I was proud to promote and cheer about!

2013 saw more legendary Metal bands creating quality music and career defining albums than I’ve ever seen before. The Metal comebacks of Carcass, Witch Cross, Satan and Gorguts (to name a few) are eye-popping to me! I could never be more proud, as a fan.

In my Metal world, I could easily add another 20 albums from 2013 to this list! Regardless, I present to you, Metal Odyssey’s Top 20 Metal Albums Of 2013! I sincerely believe, that each album here is a solid-as-steel piece of art and a true representation of the respective band’s talents and Metal sub-genre that they belong to.

I thank and congratulate each band on this list. Without these bands and their albums, life would undeniably super suck. Metal be thy name.

Motorhead - Aftershock - promo cover pic

#2

MOTÖRHEAD – Aftershock

Easily can be described as a return to what made Motörhead the true Rock ‘N Roll legends they are. One of the best Motörhead albums in their entire iconic catalog. Lemmy, Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee are, in my opinion, the greatest power trio alive today.

Carcass - Surgical Steel - promo cover pic

#3

CARCASS – Surgical Steel

Carcass returned in 2014. No, I correct myself. Carcass returned with a Metal vengeance in 2014. Just this 1 Carcass album alone makes them ultra legendary. Not one moment on Surgical Steel can be missed. Mesmerizing Metal is Surgical Steel. Amazing stuff.

BLACK SABBATH - 13 - large promo cover pic - 2013 - #3

#4

BLACK SABBATH – 13

Even without the legendary Bill Ward on drums, 13 from Black Sabbath still sounds mega-legendary from this iconic Metal band.

Read Stone’s review of 13 here:

BLACK SABBATH “13″ – Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day! New Music Videos Streaming Online!

Above review posted on June 16, 2013, on Metal Odyssey.

Sodom - Epitome Of Torture - promo cover pic

#5

SODOM – Epitome Of Torture

I mentioned here on Metal Odyssey during 2013 that SODOM’s Epitome Of Torture is one of the best of Thrash Metal albums I’ve ever listened to. This album is pummeling, raw and in-your-face Thrash Metal, done the old school way.

Soulfly - Savages - promo cover pic!

#6

SOULFLY – Savages

Metal warrior Max Cavalera brought in his son Zyon on drums – and with the super talents of Marc Rizzo (guitars) and Tony Campos (bass), Savages is (yet again) another explosive Metal album from Soulfly!

WitchCross-CoverArt-DimitarNikolov.psd

#7

WITCH CROSS – Axe To Grind

Easily, the comeback band and album of 2013. Witch Cross dug deep into their musical Metal roots and captured Metal lightning in a 6-pack! Unreal good songs and new vocalist Kev Moore soars! An instant Metal classic, the instant I listened to Axe To Grind.

Read Stone’s review of Axe To Grind here:

WITCH CROSS “Axe To Grind” – A Legendary Return To Metal Prominence!

Above review posted on July 31, 2013, on Metal Odyssey.

Satan - Life Sentence - promo cover pic - 2013

#8

SATAN - Life Sentence

SATAN accomplished quite the Metal comeback of their own with Life Sentence. SATAN returned to remind us all that they are an important part of Heavy Metal history and Life Sentence is audio proof of that.

Read Stone’s review of Life Sentence here:

SATAN “LIFE SENTENCE” – SATAN REIGNS ONCE AGAIN!

Above review posted on August 2, 2013, on Metal Odyssey.

Sinister Realm - World Of Evil - promo cover pic

#9

SINISTER REALM – World Of Evil

Allentown, Pennsylvania’s Sinister Realm are a Metal band that YOU need to be aware of; cause their Metal is in the same class as the 2 above mentioned bands and World Of Evil is a beacon for True Metal.

Read Stone’s review of World Of Evil here:

SINISTER REALM “WORLD OF EVIL” = METAL FANTASTICAL!

Above review posted on August 1, 2013, on Metal Odyssey.

Warbeast - Destroy - promo cover pic

#10

WARBEAST –  Destroy

The legendary (vocalist) Bruce Corbitt fronts WARBEAST; a band with a Texas-sized sound of blazing, furious and brain sizzling Thrash Metal! DESTROY is the second studio album from WARBEAST and its title aptly describes the wholesome goodness of what you’ll hear.

Satyricon - Self-Titled - promo cover pic

#11 (Tie)

SATYRICON – S/T

Yes, Satyricon took a detour and released a diverse album in 2013; only this S/T package of songs STILL delivers a Blackened atmosphere, mood, feel and vibes which are all worthy of making this listener to do exactly that… listen. Rest assured, the Blackened heaviness is here as well.

Skeletonwitch - Serpents Unleashed - promo cover pic

#11 (Tie)

SKELETONWITCH – Serpents Unleashed

These Ohio Blackened Thrash troublemakers aka SKELETOWITCH have done it again; they’ve created another face-ripping Metal album that if played at maximum level, could very well move planet Earth off of its axis and fuck everything up.

Five Finger Death Punch - Wrong Side Of Heaven - Volume 1 - promo coverFive Finger Death Punch - wrong side of heaven volume 2 - promo cover

#12

FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH

It’s simple. Five Finger Death Punch released a one-two punch to their fans and most likely recruited 200 million more fans along the way. It’s too difficult to choose Volume 1 or Volume 2, therefore, Metal Odyssey’s staff and I say: It’s a Metal draw! FFDP honestly kicks incredible ass on both albums!

Gorguts - Colored Sands - promo cover pic

#13

GORGUTS – COLORED SANDS

Hail to another Metal comeback in 2013! GORGUTS returned as well and Colored Sands is a Metal triumph! Guitarist and Vocalist Luc Lemay has mystically made Classical Music sound and feel like… Metal. This is a top-tier Death Metal album and band that shall stand the test of time.

Helloween - Straight Out Of Hell - promo cover pic!

#14

HELLOWEEN – Straight Out Of Hell

HELLOWEEN don’t need to keep proving that their the Power Metal kings; still they do once again with Straight Out Of Hell. Released back in January of 2013, this Helloween album even includes superb tributes to the late Jon Lord and Freddie Mercury.

Horlet - The Keys Of Life And Death - promo cover

#15

HORLET – The Keys Of Life And Death

HORLET is an unsigned, DIY Metal band from the grand Metal state of Ohio. HORLET’s The Keys Of Life And Death is a Melodic Death Metal prize. Trust Stone when I say: HORLET is the real Metal deal.

REPTILIAN DEATH

#20

KORN – The Paradigm Shift

KORN returned with a back to KORN basics Metal sound, while welcoming back Brian “Head” Welch on guitar, on The Paradigm Shift. This album has been a contagious listen for me and is, in my Metal opinion, an album that substantiates why KORN is a world-class Metal band since day one. Metal be thy name.

Compiling My 2013 Best Metal Albums List Has Put Me In A Metal Quandary!

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Metal, metal bands, metal music, Music, news, rock music, rock music news, world news with tags , , , , , , , , on December 28, 2013 by Metal Odyssey

Carcass - Surgical Steel - promo cover pic

CARCASS – Surgical Steel

For the past month, I’ve been listening to, re-listening to and debating over which albums will make my “Best Metal Albums Of 2013″ list. For clear reasons (to me) this year marks the most difficult time I’ve ever encountered, in compiling this list. I’m in a quandary!! Someone call Dr. Phil or better yet, someone call Black SabbathMotörhead, Carcass, Sodom, Stryper, Satyricon and Satan and tell them ALL they should have never released such amazing milestone Metal albums; especially ALL at once this past year! Um, please, no one tell them that.

Throw in the fact that Witch Cross and Sinister Realm are in the mix with spellbound like True Metal releases in 2013 and I’m on my knees begging for the Metal Gods to help me sort it all out!! Which band’s album gets #1 and why? Which band’s album comes in last on my best of list and for what reason? Rankings super SUCK and I have the urge right now to eat a case of Doritos. Can anyone please kick me in the ass and tell me to stop!?

Motorhead - Aftershock - promo cover pic

Motörhead – Aftershock

Adding to this quandary, is: I believe that any album that makes any “Best Of” album list of mine, equates to either an instant classic or soon to be classic, within our beloved pages of Metal History; at least my pages of Metal History! All of this self-debate and (at times) self-doubt over which best Metal albums I’ve listened to over the year is very important to me. I need a very cold beer right now, from my very cold garage.

Stay tuned. My Metal list will be done eventually. Stone will come through. Hell, my “Best Hard Rock Albums Of 2013″ list is already secured in my brain. For some crazy reason, the Hard Rock albums list never drove me even remotely insane. My “Top Ten Songs Of 2013″ list went down easier than a Yuengling lager. Go figure. Best Metal Buddy, Scott Coverdale, already has his Best list done and ready to go. I know he struggled with it, though. Ha, ha. Still, he’s the best.

I gather it’s time for me to stop whining and get back to my Metal debate with myself. Once this fun task is complete, I can then begin to listen to what 2014 has in store for my Metal hunger… and look forward to another quandary such as this in a year from now. Metal be thy name.
