5 Metal Fists Out Of 5!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall5

MICHAEL SCHENKER & FRIENDS - Blood Of The Sun will be releasing on April 22, 2014, in North America, via Germany’s Collectors Dream Records. This is a 14 song compilation of Rock’s storied classics, including 2 instrumentals, courtesy of the iconic guitarist Michael Schenker!

Michael Schenker’s “Friends” are a roll-call of 12 Rock, Hard Rock and Metal luminaries! From Michael’s long-time vocalist Gary Barden, to Sebastian Bach, with Paul Di’Anno in-between, this compilation of Classic Rock cover songs gives me the ostrich bumps all over my arms and face, each time I listen to it! This album is Classic Rock ‘N Metal 101, my fellow Metal brethren and Rockaholics!

It is only fitting that this album has come together, with Michael Schenker sharing the stage and studio with a list of who’s who throughout his epic musical career. To my ears and Rock ‘N Roll senses, Michael Schenker has undeniably molded these Rock classics into his very own, with a little help from his friends! From Pink Floyd’s Money to Black Sabbath’s War Pigs, these classics are celebrated to the highest degree of vocal and musical excellence! Tim “Ripper” Owens essentially kills it, on the cover of War Pigs. Whoa!

Michael Schenker magically allows his Dean Flying V guitar to do all the talking for him and each vocalist featured here sounds nothing short of terrific! The guitar tones of Michael Schenker are forever entrenched in the minds and souls of his countless fans; any fan of this guitar icon should be pleased by what they hear, on this album. This compilation defines Michael’s uniqueness and (improvisation-like) studio creativity, which has had him stand out among his peers for decades.

If I have come across as spellbound by this compilation from Michael Schenker & Friends, there is plenty of solid reasoning. I grew up listening to Michael Schenker, along with each and every vocalist here, from Joe Lynn Turner to Tim “Ripper” Owens and I immensley appreciate each and every one of their respective talents. Truth be told, this album is about Rock, Hard Rock and Metal coming together as one impressive Classic Rock family. Metal be thy name. – Stone

Posted in Guitar, guitarists, Heavy Metal, Metal, metal music, Music, news, rock music, rock music news, world news with tags , , , , , , , , on January 23, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

INFERNO_FRONT_FIX

(Los Angeles, CA)  Legendary lead guitarist MARTY FRIEDMAN - whose performances on landmark releases such as “Rust In Peace” (Megadeth), “Speed Metal Symphony” (Cacophony) and “Dragon’s Kiss” (his influential solo debut) have earned him hall-of-fame status in the heavy metal guitar pantheon, has unveiled the first full track from his upcoming studio album, Inferno. The brand new song “Steroidhead” can be streamed below:

“Steroidhead” sees FRIEDMAN backed by some notable young musicians –Keshav Dhar and Anup Sastry (Skyharbor). Says FRIEDMAN, “I love working with innovative, risky and borderline crazy musicians, and the guys on ‘Steroidhead’ certainly fit that description. Each track on the album has a separate dream team on it, so it feels like a constant barrage of fresh interpretations of my music.”

Due in May, Inferno – the cover art for which appears above — is FRIEDMAN‘s first solo album of original material in four years, and his first recording in more than a decade that will be released worldwide simultaneously. Featuring what he describes as the heaviest, most intense playing of his career, the album will feature guest appearances by several artists influenced by FRIEDMAN, including Alexi Laiho (Children of Bodom), flamenco/metal acoustic duo Rodrigo y Gabriela and Revocation’s David Davidson. In addition, Inferno includes FRIEDMAN‘s first songwriting collaboration with Jason Becker since the pair played together in Cacophony, the pioneering duo of guitar mayhem.

In other news, FRIEDMAN will appear at this week’s NAMM trade show in Anaheim, Calif., where he will officially introduce his new Paul Reed Smith MARTY FRIEDMAN Signature Model guitar. He will also play a brief solo live set at the Roland/Boss booth and perform at the “Randy Rhoads Remembered” NAMM after-party/concert.

MARTY FRIEDMAN – Legendary Guitarist’s New Studio Album Set For Spring Release

Posted in classic rock, Guitar, guitarists, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on December 6, 2013 by Metal Odyssey

Marty Friedman - publicity pic - #1- 2013

(Los Angeles, CA)  Perhaps the most revered lead guitarist in thrash metal history, MARTY FRIEDMAN– whose groundbreaking work with Megadeth, Cacophony and as a solo artist has influenced legions of players around the globe — is currently putting the finishing touches on a new studio album, “Inferno.”

Tentatively set for a spring release, the album — FRIEDMAN’s first original material in four years, and his first album in more than a decade that will be released simultaneously worldwide — will feature what FRIEDMAN feels is the heaviest, most intense playing of his career. A one-minute teaser can be heard below:

“I’m extremely proud of the work I’ve done with Cacophony and Megadeth, but I was never interested in stopping there,” FRIEDMAN says. “‘Inferno’ is the album that fans of my work with those two bands have always wanted me to make. I’ve finally made it, and completely on my own maniacal terms.”

As Guitar World recently revealed in an exclusive in-studio feature, “Inferno” will include several collaborations with players influenced by FRIEDMAN, including Alexi Laiho (Children of Bodom), Revocation guitar whiz David Davidson and the flamenco/metal acoustic duo Rodrigo y Gabriela. In addition, the album includes FRIEDMAN’s first songwriting collaboration with Jason Becker since the pair played together in the pioneering duo of guitar mayhem, Cacophony.

“On the guests’ songs, each would write a song from scratch, and then I would arrange it and add my parts to it,” FRIEDMAN says. “That way, we were both invested in it, and it’s a little bit of a deeper experience than just banging out a guest solo.”

Marty Friedman - publicity pic - #1 - 2013

Make no mistake, though — “Inferno” is unquestionably a MARTY FRIEDMAN album, and one he plans to tour behind extensively (including his first U.S. performances since 2003). Furthermore, it features what FRIEDMAN told Guitar World is “the most intense writing and playing I can do,” with the goal of “go(ing) completely ape-shit and smok(ing) everything else I’ve ever done.”

“I wanted to create a new landmark to which my future music will be compared,” FRIEDMAN elaborates further. “That idea of just going completely balls-out — knowing what the full potential of my music and my playing could possibly be, and actually making it a reality — was what drove me through the whole process.”

Just as he changed the game in the worlds of metal and guitar once before with his revered solo debut “Dragon’s Kiss,” FRIEDMAN now raises the bar to a new level for a new generation with “Inferno.” More information on the album will be revealed in the coming weeks.

CRISS OLIVA – Remembering This Guitar Legend On The Anniversary Of His Passing

Posted in guitarists, Heavy Metal, heavy metal bands, Metal, metal bands, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on October 17, 2013 by Metal Odyssey

Savatage - Ghost In The Ruins - A tribute to Criss Oliva - promo cover

CRISS OLIVA was the co-founder of the iconic SAVATAGE and the younger brother to (The Man Of Music) Jon Oliva. Criss Oliva was (and still is) a guitarist who has inspired and influenced countless of musicians across our planet. Criss Oliva’s tragic death on October 17th, 1993, from an oncoming drunk driver was a tremendous shock to the music world. The music of Criss Oliva lives on and he shall never be forgotten by this fan.

Below was a reminder I came across this morning, from Bryan Holland, co-founder/guitarist and songwriter of the outstanding Metal band Reverence, that the 20th anniversary of Criss Oliva’s passing is today.

As reported on the Reverence Facebook page:

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the passing of Criss Oliva, guitarist of Savatage. Please take a few minutes today and listen to this hugely talented band and massively underrated guitarist who personally influenced Pete Rossi and myself’s playing and writing more thank anyone else ever has.

You won’t regret it…Keep his and the band’s music alive, that way Criss and Savatage will live on forever.

~ Bryan Holland

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0ZRDWH7G0Q

Metal Odyssey Note: The drummer for Reverence, Steve Wacholz, is also a co-founding member of Savatage. Criss Oliva’s former Savatage bandmate, the legendary Chris Caffery, wrote a heartfelt piece about Criss Oliva today as well; you can read it by going to the Savatage Facebook page here: Savatage

Savatage - Ghost In The Ruins - A tribute to Criss Oliva - promo cover

After I read memorial pieces that Bryan Holland and Chris Caffery wrote, I knew I had to listen to Savatage today in memory of Criss Oliva. The Savatage CD I chose from my collection: Ghost In The Ruins – A Tribute To Criss Oliva. This CD was released back in 1995, via Nuclear Blast America. All 13 songs are live and the sound is stellar! I included in the track listing (below) the year and venue for each song’s live recording. The production by Paul O Neill and Jon Oliva I applaud for having this CD sound like a continuous concert performance, with no silent breaks between the songs.

I honestly just bought this CD (used) for the first time, over this past Summer, for an amazing price of $2.99 (U.S.) at Omega Music, in downtown Dayton, Ohio. Unreal. To say I recommend this Tribute To Criss Oliva CD is an understatement! Hearing the guitar wizardry of Criss Oliva on this CD is incredible! The Criss Intro (guitar solo) is grand! The finale is Post Script, which is a sound check by Criss Oliva; it makes for a fittingly perfect way to end this CD. This Savatage lineup was simply… superb.

I feel very fortunate that I was able to see Savatage (back in 1987) perform live, as they were out supporting their Metal classic: Hall Of The Mountain King. I feel very, very fortunate.

Guitar Virtuoso James Williams Releases New CD ‘Eclectic Shred’ Featuring Symphony X and James Labrie Members

Posted in Guitar, guitarists, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , on November 18, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Plano, TX – Much to the excitement of guitarists around the world, guitar virtuoso James Williams has released his new solo CD Eclectic Shred on October 20, 2012. Featuring guest appearances by Mike LePond from Symphony X and Matt Guillroy from James Labrie/Yngwie Malmsteen and released on the Eclectic Shred label, the new CD by James Williams is an exercise in guitar wizardry, the likes of which have not been heard before!

“Quality songs, quality players. Just an honor to work with James Williams and be part of this kick-ass project.” – Mike LePond, Symphony X

Hailing from Tulsa, Oklahoma, James Williams was raised on classical music; his mother was a singer in the church choir and sang Opera locally, and sister sang professionally for the San Francisco Metropolitan Opera for ten years. Composers such as Bach, Vivaldi, Stravinsky, Mozart, Carl Orf, Chopin were all part of James’s early musical vocabulary. By the age 12, Jimi Hendrix became his fascination, followed by guitarists Robin Trower, Larry Carlton, Al Dimeola, Gary Moore, Jeff Beck, Alan Holdsworth, Frank Marino, Yngwie Malmsteen and bands like Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, Scorpions, ELP, Yes, Boston and Kansas.

James has appeared in Guitar Player Magazine with Mike Varney of Shrapnel Records, who said, “James’s impressive guitar pyrotechnics are highlighted by arpeggios, speed picking, vibrato and guitar harmonies that work together to create inspiring high level passages that sometimes remind me of Yngwie Malmsteen.” James has recorded with the late bassist Wyman Tisdale and also legendary bassist/composer/arranger Marcus Miller. Performances with guitarist Norman Brown, saxophonist Gerald Albright and many other top artists, along with years of exposure to classical, jazz, metal and R&B, James has created a diverse sound that is on the cutting edge of today’s guitarists. Says James,“My inspiration is always to achieve something musical that will last and inspire others.”

In 2011, Magna Carta Records released the critically acclaimed album by James’s under the name X Opus titled ‘The Epiphany CD’; the band was essentially James on all instruments with two vocalists. Sea Of Tranquility raved about the album, “If you like heavy progressive music with celestial lyrical themes you most certainly won’t go wrong if you invest in this one.”

In regards to the outcome of his latest album ‘Eclectic Shred’, James explains, “There is so much diversity in this record it should satisfy the solo hungry guitar fans, the song composition fans, and anyone who likes fusion with odd time signatures, power Symphony X rhythms to Hendrix, Ynwie and classical lovers of guitar and keys.” Adding to his impressive guitar virtuosity, James also plays bass, keyboards, drum programming, along with composing all the symphony arrangements. He also produced and mixed the album at his personal recording facility, X Opus studio.

Says James, “As far as the players on ‘Eclectic Shred’, I am really happy with how that turned out, as it can be a challenge to communicate to guys that are in other parts of the US and can’t come to your studio. However, the players I used were great at doing their thing. I am so happy to be able to have gotten my good friend Mike LePond from Symphony X to play bass on the album – he is a bass god! His timing and interpretation is masterful, and he wrote his own lines and played the way he wanted as he heard it. Mike is the best prog-metal has to offer – Symphony X is my favorite modern metal band and the best out there musically. I got in touch with Matt Guillroy through my good friend Mike Varney, the famed progressive guitar producer who brought us Yngwie and Jason Becker. Matt plays keyboards for James Labrie and has worked with Yngwie – he is better on keys sounding like a guitar than most guitar players. He is a master of the keys and I was so glad to get him on the record shredding solos!” Also included on the recordings are guitarists Dave Thomas and Richard Tull.

In conclusion, James has this to impart to his fans and listeners, “I hope that people benefit spiritually as well as musically from this record.”
