SOULFLY – REVEAL “SAVAGES” COVER ART; GUEST VOCALISTS COMMENT ON THEIR APPEARANCES!

Legendary Brazilian extreme metallers SOULFLY have revealed the cover art of the band’s forthcoming studio effort, Savages, which is set for release on October 4, 2013 via Nuclear Blast Entertainment.

The artwork was created by renowned artist Paul Stottler, who is best known for SACRED REICH’s legendary Surf Nicaragua cover.

Furthermore, main man and Metal legend, Max Cavalera, commented on the album:

“Recording Savages was an amazing experience for me. I was so excited to work with Terry Date, whom I consider to be one of the best producers of all time. He has done some great records and we have been in contact for awhile since he mixed three SOULFLY albums in the past. He came to see SOULFLY whenever we played in Seattle, and we finally made it work that he would be the producer for Savages. My teammates were awesome. Marc did some crazy guitar noises and we did a ‘Mars Part Two’ at the end of ‘El Comegente’ – it’s very LED ZEPPELIN influenced and Marc kicked some ass on it. I wrote ‘El Comegente’ with Tony Campos. It’s in Portuguese and Spanish and it’s about Vargas – a Venezuelan cannibal from the 80’s. He is the Hannibal Lecter of the Andes. Crazy shit! I worked for the first time on a full album with my son, Zyon. Before recording the album I first worked closely at home with him in preproduction, and it was great to spend weeks on the songs with Zyon, shaping the sound of the record. Zyon did a great job and he hits really hard just like his uncle Iggor – it was amazing recording with my son. A whole record! A dream come true for a father whose life is dedicated to metal. Savages is a celebration of all that.” – Max Cavalera

Produced, engineered and mixed by renowned sound guru Terry Date (PANTERA, DEFTONES, WHITE ZOMBIE), Savages will be released as a limited edition digpack CD, 2LP vinyl and digital download.

Guest vocal appearances on Savages include bass player Tony Campos, Max Cavalera’s son Zyon Cavalera (LODY KONG), CLUTCH’s Neil Fallon, NAPALM DEATH’s Mitch Harris and Jamie Hanks of I DECLARE WAR fame.

Read, what all the guest vocalists share:

“I was super pumped when I got the call to add vocals to ‘Bloodshed’. It’s badass that Nuclear Blast chose it as the first single.“ – Zyon Cavalera (LODY KONG)

“It was pretty incredible working with heavy metal legends like Max and all of SOULFLY.” - Jamie Hanks (I DECLARE WAR)

“I am stoked to have been asked by Max to participate on the ‘Ayatollah Of Rock ‘N’ Rolla’ track! Max brought CLUTCH out on some of our earliest and most formative tours and this brought back some very fond memories of singing with Max all those years ago.“ – Neil Fallon (CLUTCH)

„It was an honor for me to finally collaborate on a song with Max and co. It’s something we’ve been talking about for the last 9 years. I’ve always felt like part of the Cavalera extended family, and for me it was a truly uplifting, comforting and memorable experience after say 26 years or so. We ran through all the takes together, trying to capture the carnal energy, the push and pull between force and action. Friction, charisma, and something true directing the sole intent of the message, that was my general angle on it. Art and expression are about capturing the moment, the essence of a connection between like-minded souls, expanding on concise ideas that start small and end up big.“ – Mitch Harris (NAPALM DEATH)

“Getting to share vocals with Max on “El Comegente” was great. The song was coming along so quick, I pretty much wrote lyrics for that on the spot. I showed Max a couple of different things and used the stuff he thought was cool and made him laugh.“ – Tony Campos (SOULFLY)

SOULFLY – LEGENDARY METAL BAND SIGNS TO NUCLEAR BLAST ENTERTAINMENT!

SOULFLY CURRENTLY RECORDING NEW ALBUM!

SOULFLY IX – RELEASING LATER IN 2013!

___________________________________

SOULFLY are pleased to announce that they have inked a deal with Nuclear Blast Entertainment, a new division of Nuclear Blast formed by Nuclear Blast owner Markus Staiger and former Roadrunner A&R chief Monte Conner. SOULFLY will enter the studio this month to begin recording their as-of-yet-untitled ninth studio album. The record will be produced by the world-renowned Terry Date, who is known for his work with such bands PANTERA, DEFTONES and SOUNDGARDEN among many others.

“I’m really excited to be signing SOULFLY to Nuclear Blast Records,” commented legendary frontman Max Cavalera (SEPULTURA, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY). “On top of it, we’re going to be reunited with Monte Conner who I’ve worked with for over 20 years at Roadrunner. SOULFLY ‘s new album is going to be recorded in Seattle with the great producer Terry Date, and it’s going to come out later in the year through Nuclear Blast worldwide. Keep it metal!”

“It feels so right to be reunited with Max Cavalera,” added Monte Conner. “He is the second artist I signed and we’ve made 17 albums together over the years, including several metal classics. Max’s voice remains just as unique and powerful as the day I met him and I felt the last SOULFLY album Enslaved was his strongest work since the band’s Gold-selling debut. I am honored to call him a friend and to continue to be a part of his mission.”

Ever since the band’s gold-certified debut in 1998, SOULFLY have become deadlier and more dangerous with each critically acclaimed successive release, and their upcoming album will be no exception. Expect a release tentatively in the Fall of this year.

The band recently released a short trailer in which Max updates the SOULFLY tribe. Watch it here:

SOULFLY ‘ENSLAVED’ – Soulfly Has Raised Their Own Bar Of Metal Excellence

Posted in groove metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal with tags , , , , , on March 30, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

SOULFLY – The eighth studio album from Soulfly, Enslaved, was released on March 13, 2012, via Roadrunner Records. It’s a killer. With a “slave theme” throughout, just another dark side of mankind is brought to the Metal forefront by Max Cavalera and his band. If anyone out there needs to hear a legendary voice and musician of Metal… Max Cavalera is just that on Enslaved.

I was counting the days for this Soulfly release. I knew this album was going to resonate Metal in its heaviest form, with appreciative quality from world-class Metal musicians. As I listen to the vocals of Max Cavalera, the lyrics and brutal themes to the songs on Enslaved are magnified with an unparalleled realism. Whoa. Max has Soulfly at the top of the heaviest tier of Metal bands with this Enslaved release. There’s no doubt in my Metal mind about this.

One of my favorite tracks on Enslaved is Plata O Plomo. I cannot get enough of Soulfly’s Groove Metal and extreme rhythm stomp, courtesy of Tony Campos (bass) and David Kinkade (drums). Tony Campos also lends vocals on Plato O Plomo. The inclusion of a Flamenco guitar, during and at the conclusion of this song, gives it such a diverse touch that it’s insanely grand.

___________________________________

Soulfly solidifies their ever impressive Thrash capabilities with American Steel and it F’n scorches and shreds! Whoa. American Steel has left its Thrash mark on my Metal soul. The tempo of the second half of this song may slow down some, still, the intensity of the vibes that American Steel gives off are there to behold. Once again, Soulfly shows off their astute diversity for the song with Max playing the sitar as the coda.

I cannot express any louder or clearer, just how proficient of a guitarist Marc Rizzo is. Marc is a thrill to listen to and he belongs mentioned in the “best of class” when it comes to Metal guitarists… or any Rock guitarist for that matter. The tones of Marc’s guitar are surely showcased throughout Enslaved. On Treachery, Marc just let’s it all loose, proving his dynamical presence is indeed an asset to Soulfly.

Across the board on Enslaved, the Metal is not just great… the Metal is exceptional. As I’ve stated in the past, I listen to a great deal of Metal and I don’t bullshit around. Soulfly has raised their own bar of Metal excellence with Enslaved. This is an album that holds a very strong chance at being #1 on my best of list at year’s end. Metal be thy name.

Soulfly “Tribe” – an exercise in diverse Metal Music

Posted in Album Review, diverse metal music, essential metal music albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal album review, heavy metal albums, heavy metal music, Heavy Metal Reviews, heavy metal this decade, heavy metal vocalists, Metal, metal music, metal music 2002, metal music ep's, metal music this decade, Metal Reviews, Music, Thrash Metal, tribal metal music with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 18, 2009 by Metal Odyssey

To enjoy and appreciate Soulfly is to accept the fact that Max Cavalera presents his own style of Metal, both musically and vocally. “Tribe” is an awesome blend of studio tracks and live recordings, (8 total songs), that are pure Metal in all of it’s gleaming, diverse glory. You will hear thrash with “Bleed”, Tribal Metal with “Tribe” and constant aggressive guitar (Logan Mader), bass (Marcello D. Rapp) and percussion (Roy Mayorga) throughout. On the song “Tribe” the percussion gives the tribal sound that you will forever know as Tribal Metal. “Soulfly (Eternal Spirit Mix)” is an instrumental, Tribal Metal songscape, that will take you by cool, soothing surprise. Max Cavalera is a Metal Music innovator, uniting Tribal and Metal music, a singer that can change his vocal style in an instant and gives each song its unique vocal watermark.

Ever so often, there comes a time when a Metal Music album or EP eradicates the norm and transcends the expectancy of the listener. Here I was, the listener to this Soulfly “Tribe” EP and I was hooked after my very first experience. I will not fib here, I have been a Max Cavalera fan since his days with Sepultura, he has unquestionably distinguished himself from the pack, by fronting Soulfly. (This is my Metal opinion). Sepultura and Cavalera Conspiracy fans must own “Tribe”. For Metal fans who want to diversify and listen to a cornucopia of Metal styles on one disc, go for “Tribe” and you surely will not regret it.

* “Tribe” was released on March 5, 2002, on Roadrunner Records.

* “Tribe” also has the subtitle “Australian Special Tour Edition”

Paul Dianno “The Living Dead” is very much alive with Metal Music

Posted in 1980's heavy metal music, 1980's metal music, Album Review, cool album covers, essential heavy metal albums, Extreme Metal, heavy metal album covers, heavy metal album review, heavy metal albums, heavy metal music, Heavy Metal Reviews, heavy metal solo albums, heavy metal solo artists, heavy metal solo vocalists, heavy metal this decade, heavy metal vocalists, Metal, metal music, metal music today, Metal Reviews, Music, recent heavy metal albums, spooky metal album covers, Vocals with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 12, 2009 by Metal Odyssey

main-150Paul Dianno “The Living Dead” was released on May 16, 2006. Why I lead with this, is due to my impatience for waiting on this album… I counted the days leading up to it’s release. It was like I was eight years old again, waiting for Christmas morning to come. For the few who may not know, Paul Dianno was the original lead singer for Iron Maiden. Paul Dianno was lead vocalist on the debut “Iron Maiden” album and the “Killers” album. Of course you can count bootlegs and the “Maiden Japan” EP as well, with having Dianno as lead vocalist. If it wasn’t for Bruce Dickinson taking over as lead vocalist for Iron Maiden, starting with the “666 The Number of the Beast” album, I would say that Paul Dianno could never be replaced as lead vocalist. However, It is my Metal opinion that comparing Paul Dianno to Bruce Dickinson is apples to oranges. Why compare? They are both completely different vocalists, both in style and range. The Paul Dianno fronted version of Iron Maiden, with the first two studio albums, (mentioned above), are undisputed Metal classics, that are revered and influential to countless Metal fans and/or Metal musicians. I feel Paul Dianno shares the same equal glory among the other original members of Iron Maiden for these albums being so iconic. (Phew, I got that off my chest, now I can blab about the actual album – “The Living Dead”).

The opening track “The Living Dead” is sung with power and emotion from Dianno – yeah, you can have emotion in Metal music. Lyrically, this song tackles loneliness, hunger and human despair. (Nope, this song is not about the cult horror film classic). This tune is a heavy – very heavy ballad if you will. For every song I mention on “The Living Dead”, bear in Metal mind, that this is a very, very heavy album. Dianno sounds more hungrier, angrier and confident than ever. (That is what my Metal ears are telling me anyways). “Mad Man In The Attic” has Dianno doing a little exploring, into the world of Death Metal vocals. These growling vocals are not constant throughout, Dianno apparently was looking for some vocal horror texture and he succeeds here, in my Metal opinion. I find Dianno to be a touch reminiscent of the legendary Alice Cooper on this song. “War Machine” is a tune built on speed and dark heaviness. “Brothers Of The Tomb” has Dianno hitting the extreme high notes vocally, with some angry gang vocals added into the mix as well. “P.O.V. 2005″ is a down right Thrash Metal tune… excellent riffs and a very cool solo as well.

Dianno does a cover of the Megadeth classic “Symphony Of Destruction” – it is structured and arranged differently than the original version. The biggest difference is the vocals, plus this version is not nearly as fast overall, as to what Megadeth delivers. I like this cover for it’s diverse Metal approach though, the Megadeth original will always be the best. Two legendary Paul Dianno era – Iron Maiden tracks are included as live bonus tracks: “Wrathchild” and “Phantom Of The Opera”, the liner notes do not suggest that these live recordings were done with Iron Maiden, rather with Paul Dianno’s band. Dianno is all over these two tunes… the quality, musicianship and vocals of Dianno make these bonus tracks a worthwhile addition to “The Living Dead”.

The copy of “The Living Dead” I picked up back in 2006, has a bonus DVD that includes the video for the song “The Living Dead” and an interview with Paul Dianno. The video is dark, almost haunting with it’s imagery. Paul Dianno is shown alone, singing against the backdrop of images of strife, humanity and despair. The interview with Paul Dianno is very interesting, with really no details as to why he and Iron Maiden split ways decades ago. One neat bit of info that Dianno shared is that he feels Max Cavalera (of Sepultura & Soulfly fame) is currently the best lead vocalist in Metal today. Hey, I really like everything that Max Cavalera has done with Sepultura and Soulfly myself. I definitely recommend “The Living Dead” to any fan of Metal, especially Iron Maiden fans who want to hear some recent Paul Dianno, he did a fabulous Metal job with this album.

The Metal musicians behind Paul Dianno on “The Living Dead” are: Paulo Turin, Chico Dehira, Javier Cuevas and Claudio Duliba on guitars * Felipe Andreoli & Marcelo Bracalente on bass * Aquiles Prieser & German Rodriguez on drums.
