Red Fang - The Meadows - music video promo pic - 2014

Red Fang have a new music video for The Meadows from their recently released EP, Scion A/V Presents Red Fang ( The glutinous clip finds the hairy and hilarious metal band putting on their fancy clothes and putting away a herculean amount of food in a super slow motion.

Red Fang released Whales and Leeches in October 2014, with the eleven-song album quickly becoming the band’s best-selling and most critically acclaimed release to date.  Alternative Press described the album as “bigger, bolder, heavier, catchier and even more savagely fun,” Stereogum said the release “takes flight and soars,” while Magnet Magazine said Whales and Leeches “is a monumental success – a clear line from Red Fang’s earliest recordings to it latest.”

Los Angeles Stoner Metal band BEHOLD! THE MONOLITH have announced the addition of vocalist Jordan Nalley to their ranks. Nalley joined the band following the tragic loss of bassist/vocalist Kevin McDade.

Guitarist Matt Price comments: “I met Jordan through some friends at a Mastodon show. Came to find out we had a few mutual friends and that he was a vocalist and actually did a bit of vocal coaching for the heavier styles at Musicians Institute.

I took a lesson from him and brought our CD, Defender, Redeemist. I got a call from him about a week later. He loved the album and wanted to audition. At the time our new bassist, Cas, was in Europe with Sasquatch and our drummer Chase was filling in for about a months worth of Castle’s North American tour. So we had to wait a few weeks to give it a try. But when we did it was obvious the chemistry was there. He sounds great on the old stuff, and his range is great so he’s taking the new stuff into even darker gnarlier territory! We played our first show with him and it went great! We’re pretty fucking stoked and are in full writing mode. We’re hoping to be recording in very early 2015 (we’ve been talking to Billy Anderson and he’s 100% on board).”

MOUNT SALEM is a four-piece psychedelic rock/doom metal band. They started writing music together in the summer of 2012 and released their first debut EP, Endless, in the Spring of 2013. Taking influence from the likes of Black Sabbath and Pentagram, MOUNT SALEM play loud, heavy rock ‘n’ roll using all vintage gear. Throwing their own twist of dark, mysterious doom into their summonings, MOUNT SALEM systematically pull listeners into their sinister realm of sound; their lyrical imagery serving as a ride all its own. Metal Blade Records signed the band in the Summer of 2013 and recently released an extended version of Endless containing two additional, brand-new tracks.

Critical Praise:

“Whether you’re a fan of psychedelic rock, stoner rock or doom metal, there’s a little something for everybody on Mount Salem’s ‘Endless.'” – Loudwire

“Debut album, Endless, is an absolute monolith of a record that combines the sludgy, droning guitars of Iommi’s finest vintage with Emily’s shimmering vocals and epic Jon Lord-style organ rushes. It’s retro, yes, but it also sounds too exciting to be dismissed as simply revisionism.” – Metal Hammer

Electric Wizard - promo band pic - 2014 - #049930

April 17, 2014 – Visually intoxicating, uncompromisingly heavy and revered for making music and lifestyle one, Electric Wizard have completed work on their new studio album, title to be confirmed; the album will be the band’s first release through Spinefarm Records.

Formed by vocalist / guitarist Jus Oborn in 1993, Electric Wizard (based in the UK’s South-West) have thus far released seven studio albums – an increasingly influential body of work recorded on vintage analogue gear with as little technology as possible intruding on the signal (“Protools is for pussies!”).

Result: some of the heaviest, dirtiest, most evil-sounding audio ever put to tape, and more importantly to vinyl, with both Come My Fanatics (1997) and Dopethrone (2000) being lauded as landmark releases.

A cultural as well as a musical force, Electric Wizard have left an indelible mark on a host of different genres, the likes of doom, stoner and sludge; at heart, however, they stand as an iconic British Metal band, cast in the great tradition, with lyrics and artwork reflecting the hypnotic weight of the music, and subject to the same intelligence and detail.

Wreathed in occult ritual and drug-culture references, with classic ’70s horror an inspirational seam, Electric Wizard are poised to turn a page; there’s the new deal with Spinefarm Records, plus – after a nine-year hiatus – the return of Mark Greening (the drummer on Dopethrone), who completes the line-up of Oborn, US guitarist Liz Buckingham, a key member since 2003, and new bassist Clayton Burgess (Satan’s Satyrs).

Fueled by strong emotion and the harder sounds of late-’60s Detroit, the remodeled line-up – isolated by choice, giant stacks glowing red – set about crafting an eighth studio album to both rival and exceed the milestone recordings of the past, with Buckingham keeping things suitably monolithic and the band generally looking back to some of their earliest influences.

Toerag Studios in London was once again charged with capturing ‘The Sound’, and (encouragingly) words like “raw”, “hateful” and “sickeningly heavy” are being traded.

Says Oborn: “Our master plan is this. Real metal!! We stand for rebellion, we are with the kids; we fight, puke, smoke weed, etc… Electric Wizard is an entity, with its own history, its own symbols, its own iconography, and with this new album, we wanted to return to basic values. It’s primitive. We needed to claw it back down to the evil core – sex, drugs, violence, revolution… to go back to being a band that hung out and jammed hard. No teaching songs, just feeling them out. If you jam enough and you are on the same level – artistically, musically, whatever, you gotta be committed – then good music will happen. I totally believe that…”

Electric Wizard will make the following festival appearances in 2014, with more shows to be added:

May 2 – Temples Festival, Bristol, UK (headline)

June 20 – Hellfest, Clisson, France (Valley Stage headline)

July 3 – Roskilde Festival, Roskilde, Denmark (Arena Stage)

July 4 – Sonisphere, Knebworth Park, UK (stage headline)

August 16 – Jabberwocky, The Excel Centre, London, UK

September 12 – Reverence Valada, Portugal (headline with Hawkwind)

ELECTRIC WIZARD are: Jus Oborn – lead vocals, guitars | Liz Buckingham – guitars | Mark Greening – drums, percussion | Clayton Burgess – bass

Established in 1990, Spinefarm Records is an international Rock and Metal label with dedicated offices around the globe. Working with Caroline under the Universal banner, Spinefarm marries the ethos of the independent to the clout of the major, developing signature artists worldwide.

BLACKOUT – NYC Stoner Doom Trio To Bring Their Riff Rituals To Canada

Posted in Heavy Metal, metal bands, metal music, Music, news, rock music, rock music news, world news with tags , , , , , on April 9, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

Blackout - Invades Canada - 2014 Tour - promo flyer

New York City Stoner Doom trio, BLACKOUT, will bring their quaking riff rituals to Canada later this month on a four-date mini tour through Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City. This will mark the band’s first time ever on Canadian soil.

The band is justifiably ecstatic, “Wang dang poutine bang! BLACKOUT is taking their filth to the streets of Canada! We are so psyched and surprised that none of us have DUIs! Canada here we come!”

BLACKOUT Takes Canada 2014:

4/17/2014 Smiling Buddah – Toronto, ON
4/18/2014 Café Dekuf – Ottawa, ON
4/19/2014 Turbo Haus – Montreal, QC
4/20/2014 Sous Sol Du Cercle – Quebec City, QC

BLACKOUT will be touring in support of their We Are Here debut released independently last year. Commended by Sea of Tranquility for its “crushing, psychedelic heaviness,” We Are Here was recorded at Vacation Island Studio with engineer/producer Rob Laakso (Diamond Nights, Swirlies, Kurt Vile), and continues to reap critical applause. Mister Growl champions the trio for, “creating music so massive you can’t fathom its source,” Heavy Planet notes, “Loaded with screeches, twitches, and six hits of heady fuzz, We Are Here moves between massive sludge rhythms, ashy stoner passages, and sparse pockets of simplified doom. Present throughout is a rubbery weirdness, a sporadic psychedelia that sways as much as it stomps. The sound is true and solid, evidenced by the band’s approach,” while The Obelisk enthuses, “[BLACKOUT] show up with big riffs, big stomp, and underpinnings of quirk that give their unabashed tonal weight a sense that’s both lighthearted in not taking itself too seriously and a huge part of what makes the album overall so effective.

Blackout - promo band pic - 2013 - #44

Copping influence from stoner heavyweights like the Melvins and Sleep – easy comparisons to make, but true all the same – BLACKOUT might read on the surface like Riffy Brand X, but there’s more to We Are Here than sonic redundancies and tonal largesse.” Adds the Sludgelord pointedly, “Sometimes, you need a little bit of honest-to-goodness primordial metal. No pretence, no airs and graces, just crushing doom, feedback-saturated hunks of raw metal. This is where Brooklyn three-piece instrument destroyers BLACKOUT come in… We Are Here has bashed me like a club and dragged me back to its cave to examine its crude, yet creative, works. Put on your best animal skins, it’s about to get primitive. “

Order your copy of We Are Here TODAY via the band’s official BandCamp page.

With food, beer and America at the forefront, it only makes sense guitar player/vocalist Christian Gordy and drummer Taryn Waldman would meet at Gordy’s 2011 July 4th cookout in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. Waldman, a former Hooter’s waitress turned big time commercial film editor, and Gordy, a one-legged bartender/artist/BBQ enthusiast were an oddball couple for NY’s heavily-styled metal scene. The duo began rapidly banging out monolithic snail-paced riffs that could party as much as they could crush.

BLACKOUT – referring to blackout drunk, the absence of light, or a mobster hit on an entire family – was the only appropriate title for the band. With a three-song demo recorded at the now defunct Headgear Studios in the bag, Waldman set out on the task of stalking and acquiring drum wizard Justin Sherrel for the bass position. The sound filled out and quickly grew like Chuck Berry’s mustache. Now with Sherrel’s nitty-gritty, rhythm-heavy mud beneath an electrical tide of riffs and explosions, the mighty river of sludge was primed to lurch forward.

THE SOCKS – French Psychedelic Fuzz Rockers To Release Debut Full-Length Via Small Stone; New Video Now Playing

The Socks - promo debut album cover pic - 2014

French psychedelic fuzz rockers, THE SOCKS, recently joined the Small Stone Recordings family for the release of their self-titled debut full-length! Slated to drop this Spring, The Socks was recorded and mixed by Raphaël Cartellier at Studio Cartellier, France, mastered by Christopher Goosman (Early Man, Sasquatch, Dixie Witch, Solace et al) at Baseline Studio in Ann Arbor, Michigan and features nine tracks of road-tripping goodness where thick, glassy-eyed, jams swell into kaleidoscopic riff torrents, gristly vocal serenades and magnetic grooves.

Elaborates THE SOCKS in a collective statement, “The sound and identity of the band have been shaped through the years to become this psychedelic hard rock, meant to be played live. We’ve recorded all together in a room with analog tapes to focus on the energy and to make it sound real and raw. Now it’s time to take it with us on the road and share it with everyone!”

The Socks will be released via Small Stone Recordings on March 18, 2014. Further info, including preorder links, to be unveiled in the coming weeks. In the meantime, check out THE SOCKS‘ video for second track “Some Kind Of Sorcery” below:

The Socks Track Listing:

1. Lords Of Illusion
2. Some Kind Of Sorcery
3. Next To The Light
4. New Kings
5. Holy Sons
6. Electric War
7. Gypsy Lady
8. We Live
9. The Last Dragon

Some bands simply sound like they were born to do it, and listening to the classic heavy rock groove of THE SOCKS, there can be no doubt it’s what they’re made for. They’re naturals. The duel-guitar French foursome formed in Lyon in 2009 and began surprising audiences almost immediately, eventually settling down to pump out their debut EP the following year. 2010’s Side A offered up five well concentrated songs from a band still finding themselves. Inspired by the teachings of Sabbath and Zeppelin, THE SOCKS supported the release by playing with an array of national and international acts, boasting intensely energetic gigs while continuing to develop their style. The next two years drove the band to write darker, heavier, songs that were more calculating and less frenetic. The resulting 2012 EP, Bedrock spouted a pseudo psychedelic, neo-grunge moodiness that proved captivating upon first listen.

The Soda Shop dubbed it “some pretty epic fucking stoner rock,” while Church Of The Riff opined, “The entire EP shows that THE SOCKS know how to write damn good songs. Everything sounds fleshed out and exciting, without ever getting repetitive or redundant…The riffs, vocal harmonies, tasteful solos and keyboard work show a band that knows exactly what they are doing.” The record eventually caught the ears of Small Stone Recordings. During the Fall of 2012, THE SOCKS completed their first European tour. Drawing on experience garnered from festivals and gigs alongside Karma To Burn, Red Fang, Truckfighters, Horisont, Mars Red Sky, Black Rainbows and many others with whom they share various elements while still maintaining a personality all their own, they were instant crowd pleasers.

As the band continues to thrust themselves into Europe’s next generation of heavy rock ‘n’ roll beside acts like Abrahma, Deville, Asteroid, Isaak, Black Rainbows and Mother of God, Small Stone is pleased to bring their debut full-length to the masses this March.

WEED IS WEED – Featuring Legendary Alumni From Pentagram, Earthride & Spirit Caravan – Sign To Ripple Music

Posted in Heavy Metal, Metal, metal bands, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, stoner metal, stoner rock with tags , , , , , , , on November 2, 2013 by Metal Odyssey

Weed Is Weed - promo band pic - #1 - 2013

Top-tier Stoner/Doom Metal band WEED IS WEED has signed a world-wide deal with Ripple Music for the release of their full-length album, Blunt Force Trauma.

Years of seismic rumbling have led way to the tectonic formation that is WEED IS WEED. Two legendary masters of Maryland Doom, Dave “Sherm” Sherman and Gary Isom, come with a stoner/doom metal pedigree second to none. Sherm and Gary have been the creative catalysts in such genre defining bands as Pentagram, Earthride, and Spirit Caravan, and now they’re set to launch their newest, blazing heavy rock venture.

Having assembled their most blazing line-up ever, this group of musicians have crafted the perfect sound track for red-eyed blazers the world over – Blunt Force Trauma. Blitzed out, stoned heaviness is the order as this collection of tales of reefer madness and alligator fights is slated to be released early 2014 by the ever impressive Ripple Music.

Ripple Music - Logo Header

That’s right folks… People are about to take notice.

Sherm is completely shredding the vocals, undoubtedly turning in his best performance to date, as he is more than ably backed by the rip and tear of the triple (3!) guitar attack courtesy of Gary on slide & lead guitar teamed up with Jason Fisher and Rob Portillo’s riffing and rolling. Match that with the full on rhythmic assault of Darren Waters on bass, and the single moniker’d Cougin on drums, and this band is ready to pummel the unsuspecting ear drums of those about to burn!

With the ink just dry on their contract with Ripple Music, it is being announced that WEED IS WEED has also signed on with 313 INC Artist Management to help further their reach and plan their underground takeover.

Watch for some pre-release touring to be announced soon.

It’s no doubt that the riffs are gonna be huge, the vocals are gonna be gritty and the low-end will rumble that PBR floating in your stomach. Weed Is Weed is taking over… and it’s going to be a smoky green revolution.

APE MACHINE – Gearing Up For West Coast Tour Dates

Posted in Hard Rock, hard rock bands, Metal, Music, rock bands, rock music, rock music news, stoner rock with tags , , , , , on October 3, 2013 by Metal Odyssey

Ape Machine - live promo band pic - #8 - 2013

Portland, Oregon’s APE MACHINE is sowing their seeds by continuing an onslaught of regional touring of the urban wastelands of the U.S. West Coast!

The quartet that admittedly is “out to melt faces and pound the apathy out of otherwise jaded listeners” is eager to bring the live Machine back to stages, and show the masses what hard and heavy music is supposed to do to the senses. APE MACHINE is revisiting some frequent haunts of past West Coast tours all in the support of the band’s critically acclaimed Ripple Music debut, Mangled By The Machine, and this time playing in the coveted opening slot in San Diego for UK’s monsters of retro rock, Orange Goblin!

“We’ve been home for a month now, and though it’s been great to work on writing new songs, we’re all hungry to back out and rock some more!” Stated guitarist Ian Watts on the bands mind-set for getting back on the road, “One of the dates on this run is with Orange Goblin, who we shared the stage with at Freak Valley Festival in Germany. Those guys kick ass so we’re looking forward to rocking with them again!”

APE MACHINE, Ripple Music and have conspired to give one lucky winner a copy of Mangled By The Machine on CD and vinyl LP. The contest remains open through Friday, October 4. Enter to win at

Mangled By The Machine was released in early May of 2013 by Ripple Music, and is distributed throughout the North America through Nail/Allegro Distribution, the UK through Code 7, and Continental Europe through Clearspot International.

Ape Machine - Mangled By The Machine - promo cover pic

Critical Praise:

“I never thought I’d find a stoner-rock group that will appeal to fans of The Sword and Whitesnake, but here it is. No seeds or stems, either.” -Tucson Weekly

“Blending equal parts rock ‘n’ roll, blues, stoner rock and psychedelia, Ape Machine is a band whose heart is steeped in the rich musical history of the late ’60s and ’70s. That doesn’t mean they’re some kind of hippie dippy throwback band. Ape Machine delivers their material with heavy metal muscle…”-

A true four-piece, Portland, Oregon’s APE MACHINE has been called “a rock and roll band with a finger on the pulse of the 70’s and their asses firmly in the present” and “real heavy-psych for the iPhone generation” that delivers “true guts and glory rock and roll.” Combining psychedelic, classic and progressive rock with arena-worthy metal, bluesy stoner-rock and catchy riffs in odd signatures, APE MACHINE’s music carries an organic depth and warmth rarely heard since the time of rock’s glorious early years (or your Dad’s bad ass record collection) infused with an exceptional modern sensibility.

Having finished up a short Southwestern and West Coast U.S. jaunt with Austrian retro-rock sensation, Been Obscene, APE MACHINE is preparing to take their laser precision, yet frenzied live show to Europe in late May (including dates with the much vaunted Orange Goblin) in support of their brand new album, Mangled By The Machine.

Mangled By The Machine was released in May 2013 through Ripple Music. The album was recorded and mixed by Tony Lash at Supernatural Sound in Oregon City, Oregon, and in typical, unique APE MACHINE fashion, the album was recorded as one long continuous track in one take. Broken into ten individual chapters, Mangled By The Machine is an angry conceptual piece of music that takes a cue from the masters of the 70’s progressive masters, yet reflects the immediacy of the chaotic world all around us.

Ripple Music Unveils Heavy Ripples Distribution – Psych, Stoner, Doom And More

What’s the Hot New Place to Get The Best Music From the Heavy Underground?

North America’s Exclusive Distributor for Vincerebus Eruptum – the voice of the underground

Five years in the making, Ripple Music is proud to announce the creation of Heavy Ripples Distro (, the best new source to find LP’s, CD’s, 7″‘s, Tee’s, Magazines, and more from some of the most esteemed bands in the heavy underground.

Noting that the burgeoning underworld of bands pumping out stoner, doom, heavy psych and metal mania were horribly under-served by today’s current distribution system, Racer and Pope–the head honchos of the hard-rocking Label, Ripple Music– decided that something had to be done.  Knowing that there were tons of excellent heavy bands that couldn’t get widespread distribution because they weren’t “hot enough” for some of the current heavy distributors, or not signed to a big enough label, Racer and Pope decided to put together a Distro that could benefit from the years of experience and channels they’d gained with Ripple Music.

And Heavy Ripples Distro was born.

Featuring heavy bands from North America, Europe, Australia, South America and beyond, Heavy Ripples doesn’t discriminate against bands who may not move 100 copies or are self-produced and totally D.I.Y.  The only criteria for Heavy Ripples is that the bands rock- pure, unadulterated riff-mad heaviness.  Utilizing a “bare minimum” fee strategy, Heavy Ripples Distro offers bands the opportunity to have their music distributed world-wide with the lowest possible fees, allowing the bands to recoup the greatest return on their music while getting maximum exposure and the opportunity to offer their music to heavy rock fans at the best prices on the web. It’s an entirely new model for heavy music distribution and one Heavy Ripples Distro hopes can maximize the viral spread of the heavy rock.

Recognizing the dedication Heavy Ripples Distro has to the underground scene, some of the leading Labels in heavy rock jumped at the chance to join in, with Labels like Cosmic Artifactz, Buried by Time and Dust, PsychDoomelic, and Ozium Records all offering the best of their heaviness.

Vincerebus Eruptum - magazine promo - 2013

And there’s more. Heavy Ripples Distro is now the exclusive North American Distributor of Vincerebus Eruptum (, the world’s leading magazine devoted to the stoner, doom, and heavy psych rock scene.  Produced in Italy, Vincerebus Eruptum brings interviews, features, news, and reviews of such heavy legends as Colour Haze, Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats Orchid, Kadavar, Witchraft, and more.  All in a slick, full-color format and for only $7 per issue.

DIESTO “For Water Or Blood” – One HEAVY Album For Your 2013 NEED List!

4.5 Metal Fists Out Of 5!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall4Metal Odyssey - Metal Fist - Half!

DIESTO – Portland, Oregon is home to DIESTO; a band that’s incredibly heavy, from every musical angle, note and lyric. Every instrument played in this band is played heavy as freaking hell. Stoner, Doom and even CLUTCH fans who’ve not heard DIESTO (yet) will revel in this band’s sound. Aw, hell, any Metal fan will have something to marvel at with DIESTO; this band is that good. DIESTO = Riff Fest.

DIESTO will be seeing their fifth album, For Water Or Blood, release on August 27th, via (the mighty) Eolian Empire. This new DIESTO album is without any Metal doubt in my Metal mind, one you have to put on your need list. I want to feature the very best on Metal Odyssey and give my fellow Metal brethren choices that are (to me) legit and badass. DIESTO fits that Metal criteria very well.

Chris Dunn – Guitar & Vocals
Devon Christian Shirley – Drums
Rusty Powers – Bass

DIESTO pronounces the old school Doom in their songs (think early Black Sabbath) and makes it all sound so rich and powerful! Don’t be fooled that there is (only) 7 songs on For Water Or Blood, these songs are not quickies. This is an album for the backwoods bonfires, with kegs tapped and beer flowing abundantly, below a smoke-filled night sky. This is an album for the big cities too, DIESTO is a band you want your elitist neighbors to hear you playing LOUD so they don’t think of messing with you.

DIESTO are outstanding Metal musicians in my Metal world; listening to these dudes hammer away on this album is a great way to escape from the shit going on in the world right now. The sandpapered and Herculean vocals of (guitarist) Chris Dunn are simply awesome. For Water Or Blood was just the Metal remedy I needed this past week, to keep my Metal veins pumping and my Metal soul burning bright. Metal be thy name.

FOR WATER OR BLOOD – Track Listing:

Trail To The Sun

Edge Of The World

The Road

Adrift At Sea

The Sword - Iron Swan - Beer - promo pic

Spreading their entrepreneurial wings, the band is also pleased to announce the launch of a second branded beer, Iron Swan. The beer, in partnership with Texas-based Real Ale Brewing Company, marks the band’s second foray into the beer universe following the launch last fall of Winters Wolves in partnership with Baltimore, Maryland based brewery Oliver Ales. Iron Swan will officially launch at the end of July with the four Texas shows that begin the summer tour.

Real Ale Brewing Company says the following about Iron Swan:

“Our newest canned offering is a tribute to the song that first introduced us to a packaging hall favorite, The Sword. Iron Swan pours a deep copper color and has an enticing intro of fruit and caramel with subtle hints of earth and spice. This medium bodied ale showcases the fruitiness of our house ale strain, along with the rich toffee flavors of English crystal malt. Added complexity is provided by generous amounts of English hops. Iron Swan finishes slightly dry with a mild spiciness that beckons another can. Fire up your turntable and audition Iron Swan yourself.”

Dubbed the Reconcile For Revenge TourALL HAIL THE YETI will tear up and down the West Coast for twelve shows, performing with prominent acts including Unida (John Garcia from Kyuss), System Divide and many more along the way.
