WITCH CROSS – Honestly, the Metal comeback story of the legendary WITCH CROSS is one for the METAL ages. Who would think this Metal band would ever return? And return they have! With a Metal vengeance! With their (also legendary) peers SATAN making a Metal comeback as well in 2013, I couldn’t be more overflowing with Metal glee!

What’s so remarkably impressive about this WITCH CROSS Metal comeback are their (obvious) connection to their fans, their wooing same fans at various European Metal festivals and the lead single, Demon In The Mirror, from their forthcoming NEW studio album: Axe To Grind.

Witch Cross - Group Promo Pic - Logo - 2013 - #1

Metal as my witness, Demon In The Mirror has made me feel like a Metal kid again; making me feel the way I did when I first heard such classic Metal songs as: You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’ (Judas Priest), Denim And Leather (Saxon), Power (Rainbow) and Bark At The Moon (Ozzy). Why those particular songs? Call it Metal imbedding in my (very own and personal) Metal soul and call it delicious Metal elements all coming together.

Demon In The Mirror exhibits elevated Metal vibes of profound substantial levels, is Old School and has a quasi-energetic outro (courtesy of guitarist Mike Kock) that (to me) rivals what the incredible Jake E. Lee had accomplished so brilliantly with the song classic Bark At The Moon. Kev Moore was born to sing Metal. This band was born to play Metal. For me, Witch Cross has created a thunder strike of Metal bliss with Demon In The Mirror.

Listen to and watch Demon In The Mirror below. If it doesn’t blow you away, your listening to the wrong genre of music. Metal be thy name.

SEVER THE DRAMA – BAND BIO

(As shown on their Reverbnation site):

Sever The Drama is as much a mission statement as a band name. This focused, driven four-piece from Hartford, CT delivers a dynamic Hard Rock experience. Intricate and explosive rhythms lay the foundation for solid bass, powerful guitars and melodic yet aggressive vocals.

Since 2009, Sever the Drama has been playing stages in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York – building its fan base. High powered, tight, visually arresting performances separate Sever the Drama from the rest.

IRON MAIDEN “No Prayer For The Dying” From 1990 Is: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

Iron Maiden - No Prayer For The Dying - promo cover pic

IRON MAIDEN – Back on October 1st, 1990, the 8th studio album, No Prayer For The Dying, from the iconic IRON MAIDEN was released. I bought this highly underrated IRON MAIDEN release on cassette, somewhere around its release date. It took many years before I upgraded No Prayer For The Dying to CD. Upgrading to CD’s after years of cassette, vinyl and (gulp) 8-track purchases is costly, you know?

Before I go any further in celebrating this IRON MAIDEN classic, (yes, it’s a classic to me), I shall make this Metal declaration:

___________________________________

IRON MAIDEN

NO PRAYER FOR THE DYING IS:

STONE’S METAL PICK OF THE DAY!

___________________________________

Over the decades, I’ve read many mixed reviews and comments about this IRON MAIDEN offering. What the hell gives? It’s not like this album can be compared to The Number Of The Beast, Powerslave or even the Paul Di’Anno era IRON MAIDEN. As the legendary Lenny Wolf of Kingdom Come would say: It is what it is.

I honestly feel No Prayer For The Dying is one ROCK SOLID slab of IRON MAIDEN, especially since this album was released back in 1990; when Heavy Metal was supposedly butchered by bands that came out of Seattle. Whatever. That’s for another Metal day and debate I guess.

Iron Maiden - No Prayer For The Dying - promo cover pic

My favorite song on this IRON MAIDEN album is: Holy Smoke. Holy shit, does this song actually… SMOKE! I’m telling anyone who wants to listen: this song revs me up like there’s no Metal tomorrow! Holy Smoke is 100% relentless with its guitar driven attack! Whoa. Plus, the infinitely legendary Bruce Dickinson sings his ass off on this song and the entire album for that matter. ‘Nuff said about that, my fellow Metal brethren.

No Prayer For The Dying has the omission of (the also legendary) guitarist Adrian Smith. That did (and still does) super suck to the maximum potential. I gather it’s a long story and who really gives a crap now? Adrian Smith has been back with IRON MAIDEN for years now; since Brave New World was released in 2000. For No Prayer For The Dying, the already Metal seasoned Janick Gers stepped into the guitar slot left vacant by Adrian Smith, joining guitar guru Dave Murray; and Janick Gers hasn’t left IRON MAIDEN since.

Released via Epic Records, No Prayer For The Dying has been certified Gold by the RIAA Gold & Platinum Program (for U.S. sales). Metal be thy name.

TOKYO DRAGONS “Give Me The Fear” – This Hard Rockin’ Album From 2005 Is: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

Tokyo Dragons - Give Me The Fear - promo cover pic!

STONE’S METAL PICK OF THE DAY!

___________________________________________

TOKYO DRAGONS – They came from London, England. They played in-your-face, denim and leather wrapped, good-times Hard Rock. Their debut album Give Me The Fear was released back in 2005, via Escapi Music. This band certainly packed 100% Heavy Rockin’ potency and Give Me The Fear is 100% proof, to my middle-aged and Metal scorched ears. Tokyo Dragons was their name and how I wish they were still in the Hard Rock game!

Apparently, Tokyo Dragons is no longer a band. From what I’ve read, Tokyo Dragons disbanded back in 2008; just after releasing their sophomore album Hot Nuts. With no official website or facebook page existing for this band, the alternative source for information is reading about their career biography on Wikipedia. Now that’s an unfortunate thing.

What I do know is what I hear and Give Me The Fear is an amazing experience of Hard Rock bliss upon my senses! This debut from Tokyo Dragons could have easily been titled: Psyche-You-Out-Of-Your-Hard-Rockin’-Party-Lovin’ Mind! ALL 11 songs on Give Me The Fear are high-octane and pedal to the metal! This is an album that can be enjoyed by both Classic Rock and Hard Rock fans alike; with the 80′s Heavy Metal crowd undoubtedly included!

Tokyo Dragons - large logo - B&W

There’s so many memorable riffs and hooks on Give Me The Fear that it’s flat-out insane! Guitar driven to the maximum and lead vocalist/guitarist Steve Lomax sounds like a seasoned superstar of the Hard Rock world. To me, Tokyo Dragons were (very likely) feeling and sharing some legitimate Hard Rockin’ chemistry as a band, when they recorded their debut; it’s such a damn shame they’re no longer around.

I landed Give Me The Fear on CD this past weekend; finding a used copy at a store called Buybacks Entertainment. For $2.99, I couldn’t have spent my money any wiser! Due to Give Me The Fear, I’ve been transported from being unfamiliar with Tokyo Dragons to being a fan of their heavy music. Tokyo Dragons played some blue-collar, kick-ass Hard Rock. ‘Nuff said.

In my most honest opinion, Tokyo Dragons wasn’t any copycat band. Fans of AC/DC to Cheap Trick (with Helix, Fastway and Motörhead fans in-between) can all find something to savor from Give Me The Fear. I know I’m savoring every moment, each and every time I listen to this album. Now if only Tokyo Dragons would reunite… that would be Hard Rock news to celebrate. Metal be thy name.

VOIVOD – “Target Earth” Is Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

Posted in experimental metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Metal, metal music, Music, news, progressive metal, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on February 16, 2013 by Metal Odyssey

Voivod - Target Earth - promo cover pic!

VOIVODTarget Earth, is the 13th studio album from Progressive/Thrash Metal legends VOIVOD. Guitarist Daniel Chewy Mongrain meritoriously steps in for the late, legendary (and irreplaceable) Denis “Piggy” D’Amour and fits in perfectly with the entire world of unique Metal sound that only VOIVOD delivers. Co-founder and bass guitarist Jean-Yves Thériault appears once again on this (thoroughly memorable) VOIVOD album; with Jean’s last VOIVOD studio album contribution being 1991′s Angel Rat.

When a band of such influential status like VOIVOD sticks to their (musical) roots while avoiding any unnecessary reinvention of their own Metal wheel, grand things can happen. Target Earth is such a “grand thing” and I am overjoyed by both this album and VOIVOD’s admirable perseverance. With 2013 being the 30th Anniversary of VOIVOD, old school fans should be drooling over Target Earth. New fans of this Canadian national Metal treasure are surely being recruited into the VOIVOD realm, thanks in part to this band’s tour stops and Progressive/Thrash relevancy.

________________________________

I’ve always embraced the originality of VOIVOD, their blend of sound coupled with experimentation really has survived a bevy of “flavor of the month” genres over the decades; while their underground aura will never vanish, regardless of how popular they are in our Metal circles. As strange as this sounds, my 80′s VOIVOD collection of Metal has survived on none other than… cassettes. I’ll never part with them either, just as I’ll never part with Target Earth.

There’s always been that comfort food type of vibe I get from VOIVOD’s Metal and I’ll never be able to explain it away. Target Earth is not just a must album for 2013; it has earned my required status among Metal albums for 2013. Get into The VOD and thank me forever. Target Earth surely will be in my Top Ten Metal Albums Of 2013 list; this new offering from VOIVOD is that beneficial to my Metal soul. Metal be thy name.

REBELLION – Germany’s METAL Warriors Are: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

Rebellion - Group Promo Pic - 2012 - #2!!

REBELLION – When you think of German Metal, dozens of legendary bands come to mind, huh? Scorpions, Helloween, Gamma Ray, WarlockDORO, Primal Fear, EDGUY,  Grave Digger, Michael Schenker, Blind Guardian, UnisonicSinner, U.D.O., ACCEPT, Rammstein, JORN, Masterplan, Kreator, Sodom, Iron Savior, Running WildRAGE, TankardVanden Plas; the list goes on and on!

I suppose my Metal point is that Germany is downright synonymous with: METAL. Instead, make that: Metal Excellence. REBELLION have carved out their very own chapter(s) in the history of German Metal (and worldwide Metal for that matter); chapters that screams out the Metal (musical) competence of such a genuine Metal band. Regardless of lineup changes, REBELLION seems to live by their own name, rebelling against the Metal status quo and/or follow-the-leader mentality.

REBELLION is a German Metal band that in my Metal opinion, have earned both their Metal Warrior and legendary Metal status. I’m talking about a Metal band here that plays True Metal to the ultra muscular core. REBELLION lets their Metal do the talking. Like many of their German Metal peer bands, REBELLION have always maintained a consistent output of quality albums and have recruited an untold number of loyal fans worldwide; without the mainstream acceptance from the auto-tuned infested/commercial charts of the U.S. market. Thank the Metal Gods for that.

Rebellion - The Best Of Viking History - cover promo pic!

A tremendous way to become familiar with REBELLION, (not to mention an instant fan), is to pick up their 2012 digital-only release of: REBELLION – The Best Of Viking History via Massacre Records. At $5.99 (U.S.), you’re getting 14 songs from the potent Metal catalog of REBELLION. Trust in my Metal word, this is the crème de la crème from these Metal Warriors.

Rebellion - Arminius Furor Teutonicus - cover promo pic!

The recently released REBELLION studio album is 100% heavy as F**CK and I look upon it as one of the best Metal albums to have been released back in 2012. The overall driving Metal power from Arminius: Furor Teutonicus (Massacre Records) is phenomenal to my ears and senses! I highly recommended this new REBELLION album to ALL Metal fans of any Metal genre. Yes, Arminius: Furor Teutonicus is that powerful of an album. Metal be thy name.

ANGEL WITCH “As Above, So Below” Is: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , on October 23, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

ANGEL WITCH – One Metal release I couldn’t wait to get my ears into this year is the new studio album from London’s True Metal ambassadors known as Angel Witch. As Above, So Below is the newly forged Metal release from Angel Witch (and 5th overall) released back on March 26th, via Metal Blade Records. What a Metal album! Whoa!

It doesn’t bother me one bit if some material I hear on this album was written years ago… this is pure, 100%, with no fillers added Metal. Old School, raw, tough and dark is this new Metal offering from Angel Witch. This is just the way I (and countless other fans) wanted and needed it from Kevin Heybourne and his band!

To say I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this Angel Witch release is as truthful as it gets. Kevin Heybourne on vocals and guitar is stellar! Andrew Prestiedge on drums and Will Palmer on bass are equally stellar! Angel Witch are NWOBHM pioneers and Metal legends. I couldn’t put it any more simple than that. This is a Metal band that deserves any and all the Metal applause they have received this past year and I’m right up front jumping up and down.

The consistent thought among fellow Metal Music writers has been what could have been with a more expansive discography from Angel Witch over the decades. I myself wish that Angel Witch could have been more of a powerful force, however, this is the here and now and Angel Witch is alive and well in 2012. Angel Witch is as important to our Metal world today as they were in the early 80′s. Our underground world of Metal has their pit bull back and As Above, So Below is rabid proof of this. Metal legends such as Angel Witch thrive and they’ve risen once again.

__________________________________________________

Side Note: I was fortunate to receive a brand new hard copy of As Above, So Below from a long-distance Metal Buddy named Mike. This very cool Metal Buddy knew I was having difficulty locating it at the retail store level where I live and he hooked me up by ordering it at his local record shop! I very much appreciated this old school gesture from Metal Buddy Mike. I’ve always said: Metal unites us all. (I’ve stopped purchasing CD’s online cause I’m trying to curb (some) spending with my credit card(s). Every little bit of cutting back on the plastic does help, I say!)

OVERKILL “HORRORSCOPE” – 1991 Thrash Metal Classic Is: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal, thrash metal bands, thrash metal music with tags , , , , , , on October 22, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

OVERKILL – When I think back to 1991, I remember being piss-poor and madly in love with my eventual wife. Best Metal Buddy Scott Coverdale would stop over my house to play endless hours of Sega Genesis games; with NHLPA Hockey and John Madden Football being insanely addictive to us both! Yeah, 1991 sure seems like a long time ago… then there are days when it seems like 1991 was yesterday. Go figure.

When I did have a ten bill to spend on myself back then, I would usually buy a cassette cause CD’s had cost at least five to seven dollars more. One cassette I bought that I still own to this day is Overkill’s 5th release known as: Horrorscope. What an amazing Thrash Metal listen it still is, after all these (many) years! Man, I cannot tell you how many times I’ve listened to Horrorscope.

That Horrorscope cassette never wore out though. It’s now buried in a box of other cassettes of mine, somewhere  among other boxes of stuff. I would’ve dug it out to take a photo of it for this post, only I got too damn excited to announce Horrorscope as Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day! I did upgrade my ownership of Horrorscope to CD just a few years ago, believe it or not. My cassette version of Horrorscope boasts the cover you see at the very top of this post. Here is what the alternate cover looks like on my CD version:

Chaly graces this alternate cover for Horrorscope. F’n cool, huh?

This Overkill lineup heard on Horrorscope may not have been the original lineup, still, I’ve appreciated every Overkill lineup over the years. The mainstay duo of Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth and D.D. Verni keeping this Overkill Thrash Metal machine thriving, over the decades, is nothing short of spectacular. The non-stop Thrash Metal assault upon my ears, which I’ve enjoyed from Horrorscope, is nothing short of spectacular either!

If you’ve begun compiling an Overkill collection of CD’s, vinyl or cassettes, you absolutely must buy Horrorscope sooner rather than later! Overkill even covers the 1973 Rock instrumental classic from The Edgar Winter Group: Frankenstein. Trust me when I say that this Overkill cover version is killer! I especially love this song (both the original and Overkill cover) during the Halloween season. Makes sense to me.

As with any Overkill album from their gloriously Thrashing catalog, Horrorscope is comfort food to my Metal lovin’ ears and Metal hungry soul. Some things in life were meant to bring me happiness: family, friends, Metal Buddies, Metal, mashed potatoes, cold beer, doritos and of course… Overkill. Metal be thy name.

Above is the back cover of the Horrorscope CD.

OVERKILL – Lineup On Horrorscope:

Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth – vocals

D.D. Verni – 4 & 8 string bass, backing vocals

3 Inches Of Blood “Long Live Heavy Metal” – This Album Is: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

Posted in album reviews, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on October 16, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

3 INCHES OF BLOOD – Call ‘em Classic Metal, Old School Metal, Traditional Metal, True Metal or a second generation of NWOBHM. I’m calling 3 Inches Of Blood: Damn Righteous Metal. Man, if you are looking to purchase a Metal CD today, allow me to highly recommend the new album from 3 Inches Of Blood. I absolutely need to listen to this newest offering from 3 Inches Of Blood, like, everyday!

Long Live Heavy Metal is the title of this new 3 Inches Of Blood release, (released back on March 26th, 2012, via Century Media). The album title says it all! All 12 songs on Long Live Heavy Metal absolutely cooks my fellow Metal brethren! This Canadian Metal band had already gotten me hooked several years ago, with their sound and overall retrospective Metal energy that they generate; only their fifth studio album here is downright incredible stuff! Whoa! I’m very psyched-out by this album and refuse to hold it in any longer!

Justin Hagberg and Shane Clark are insane guitarists! Metal be thy name, do these two guys compliment each other. Talk about sick guitar licks, this album is bursting at the Metal seams with them! Talk about shock and awe guitar solos, Look Out is a 100% fantastic Metal experience to hear and breathe in! Guitar driven is an understatement here. This is Metal guitar 101 and 3 Inches Of Blood don’t seem to give once ounce of crap about trends. Hell, there’s even a song that opens up this album called Metal Woman and it kicks superior Metal ass to the maximum!

Cam Pipes on vocals is spectacular and I’m not kidding around. Every time I listen to Cam Pipes belt out the notes, it brings back those sweet Metal memories of being introduced to Rob Halford’s voice on all those classic Judas Priest records. Yeah… Cam Pipes is that good. This entire 3 Inches Of Blood band is that good. I’m not messing around when I tell y’all that Long Live Heavy Metal is a super-potent contender for Metal Odyssey’s Metal Album Of 2012; that’s why 3 Inches Of Blood and Long Live Heavy Metal is: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day! Metal be thy name.
