On This Day In METAL History – October 18th…
On October 18th, 1966 – The Jimi Hendrix Experience performed their first concert as a band, supporting French pop star Johnny Hallyday, at the Paris Olympia in France. The original lineup was: Jimi Hendrix on guitar & vocals, bassist and backing vocalist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell. All three of these legendary pioneers of Metal are no longer with us, still, their music and influence will carry on forever.
On this day in 1968 – A Jimi Hendrix cover version of Bob Dylan’s All Along the Watchtower is released. This song is featured on the 1968 iconic double-album: The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Electric Ladyland.
On October 18th, 1975 – Sweet hits #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart in the United States, with The Ballroom Blitz. This song is featured on the third studio album from Sweet, released in 1974: Desolation Boulevard.
On this day in 1977 – Star Wars, George Lucas‘ record breaking and iconic Science Fiction adventure, is released in theaters. Metal Odyssey’s very own Stone claims: Star Wars is so freaking cool that it’s Metal. Metal be thy name!
On October 18th, 1989 – During a Guns N’ Roses set supporting The Rolling Stones at the Los Angeles Coliseum, Axl Rose announced he was quitting from the band. On the following night, Axl Rose apologized for saying that he would quit and proceeded to deliver a five-minute anti-drug speech.

On October 18th, 1926 – Charles (“Chuck”) Edward Anderson Berry was born in St. Louis, Missouri. Happy Birthday Chuck Berry! Whoa! The super-duper legendary Chuck Berry is aka: The Father Of Rock & Roll. Chuck Berry is famously known for his 1950’s hits: Maybellene, Roll Over Beethoven, Rock and Roll Music and Johnny B. Goode. A true Rock & Roll pioneer is Chuck Berry and his influence has touched many generations of musicians, across the globe!
GARY RICHRATH
On October 18th, 1949 – Gary Richrath was born in Illinois. Happy Birthday, Gary! Yeah! Gary Richrath is most famously known for being a founding member, guitarist and backing vocalist of REO Speedwagon, from 1970 to 1990. Gary Richrath was also a songwriter and producer for REO Speedwagon. Gary has sung on several REO songs, including Find My Fortune from 1973 and (Only A) Summer Love from 1976. Gary is shown in top photo, (circa early 80’s), in the left top corner.
In 1992, Gary released a solo album: Richrath – Only The Strong Survive.
