Without Warning, This Song Starts Playing In My Head: Melanie – “Brand New Key”

Do you ever have those days, where a song starts playing in your head and you absolutely, positively, don’t know why? It happens to me all the time, therefore I’m quite used to it. 99% of the time, the song that invades my brain is Metal or at least one from the many Rock genres. Today was different though. Real different. This was a Folk Pop song going all the way back to 1971. The artist? Melanie. The song? Brand New Key. Whoa. Um, whoa again.

I do remember this song quite well however, while growing up as a very young lad back in those early 1970’s. When Brand New Key was released, I was only five years old. Metal be thy name. While this reminder of my childhood days played out in my head today, I could vividly remember the smile it brought to my mothers face all those years ago. My mother used to sing along to Brand New Key while driving the car, God rest her soul. Hearing and seeing her so joyful from this song, made me feel like everything around me was happy, safe and sound. My sister used to sing along to this song as well, as it played on AM radio. I believe I sang along too… or tried to.

What prompted Brand New Key to play out in my head today? I just don’t know. I can’t explain it. The one thing I do like about having this vintage song popping into my head, is the reminder of easier and innocent days of being just a child and singing along with my mother and sister. Reflecting on a simple moment in time. Happy memories, especially when they are triggered by a song… are truly priceless. I’ll never underestimate the magic powers of music.

  1. Melanie has such a sweet voice – and I did like her singles back in the day. However, being English we had to suffer a ‘remake’ of Brand New Key by a novelty act called The Wurzels. They re-named it “I’ve got a Brand New Combine Harvester”. It was awful, it went to Number One, and I’ll never forgive them for basically nuking my memory of the original. It was many years later (the cover was in 76 I think) that I inadvertently heard Melanie’s original on the radio, and realized what a great track it really was. Some things of beauty should be left alone.

Ouch! “Novelty acts” just seem to be like the “strangers fart” you unexpectedly walk into at the grocery store, bar or mall. 😦

I do agree with you Kev, Melanie does have a sweet voice. 🙂

  2. I honestly never heard the song until Boogie Nights…..

    • metalodyssey Says:

I can understand how that could be. Heck, there are many songs from yesteryear that I’m still discovering to this very day! 😮

  3. Sometimes I envy younger generations as they discover the classics of rock’s yesteryear. I remember my son, aged about 12, running up to me going “Dad! I’ve just heard this song, it’s called ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ – it’s amazing!” 🙂

So true it is Kev. That moment must have made you proud.

My daughters once caught me that way with AC/DC and their song: “Money Talks”. The two of ’em were bouncing up and down and out of control while it was cranked up. That was the day I said Goodbye to the Wiggles and Barney CD’s… my kids are movin’ on! 😮

      • Brilliant Stone! I took my daughter to see Glenn Hughes when she was 16, and she was blown away. Became a pretty good singer and bassist herself:

Whoa!! Kev, you must be so proud of your daughter! Yes, she can sing and play da’ bass! She must be a fan of Kittie too?
Is her band called Theft Of A Doll? (just looking to confirm). Is she still Rockin’ with this band?

That is one heavy song… Metal be thy name I like it! 🙂

        • metalodyssey Says:

I went to the Theft Of A Doll myspace… it does state they split up. I sure hope your daughter is moving forward with a Rock/music career… too much talent there!
