Hurricane Sandy – How Will This Storm Affect Metal Odyssey?

HURRICANE SANDY – I live in Central/Eastern Pennsylvania, right near the border of New Jersey. Therefore, the impact of Hurricane Sandy is very real to me and my family. As was the case last year, with Hurricane Irene, taking safety precautions and hunkering down is my #1 concern. I’ve been trying to make sure no items are left in the yard that will become dangerous flying debris; while checking off our list of necessities: batteries, first-aid supplies, radio, non-perishable food, gas for the car and of course… bottled water.

It’s a very melancholy mood for us right now, while awaiting the arrival of Hurricane Sandy. I’m sure anyone living on the East/Northeast Coast knows what I mean. What’s so outrageous and creepy is just last year, we all endured the wrath of Hurricane Irene and a major ice storm (back-to-back); both storms left their mark, that’s for certain.

Apparently, Hurricane Sandy will make her presence known sometime around Sunday night, with her outer bands of wind and rain. The “main impact” of this hurricane will be felt here on Tuesday. I hope and pray that life and property are not impacted as heavily as the forecasters predict. Life is precious and my main concern is for family, friends and Metal Buddies.

I have drafted some posts in advance of this hurricane and have scheduled them to launch throughout this coming week of Halloween. In the event you see posts begin to cease come next weekend or I’m not leaving reply comments on the posts and emails go unanswered, then that means our power is out. I surely hope we don’t lose power. Predictions for power outages are being discussed in the news by length of “weeks” and not days!

That’s the update thus far, on what to expect from Metal Odyssey’s coverage of Rock N’ Metal this coming week. I wish everyone living on the East/Northeast Coast to stay safe and strong, through this awful ordeal that Mother Nature has once again dealt us. Meteorologists have been calling Hurricane Sandy the storm of the century, the perfect storm and even… Frankenstorm. Scary times indeed. Metal be thy name.

  1. Keep your head down my friend. At the risk of mixing metaphors, Mother Nature can be a tough son of a bitch! Stay safe and keep rockin!

    • Thanks Kev! The rains have already covered our entire area. From the looks of it, there will now be no end in sight with (at least) the rain until this coming Friday. By end of today, the strong winds will be here as well…

      Rock Steady \m/\m/

    • Kev, this hurricane is absolutely NUTS! Power is “flickering” and the yard is a lake… Cannot wait for this “storm of the century” to drag it’s ass out of here! Metal be thy name!

      • How’s things man? Looks like there’s been some serious weather battering the coast…..

        • Thank you for checking in Kev, (you true Metal Buddy), here is the rundown:

Hurricane Sandy is now well inland and no longer the violent storm she once was. Still, we are going to have rain and wind gusts of 30 to 35 mph throughout today and into tonight. The remnants of Sandy remain in the sky.

Kev, It was pure HELL to go through, hearing the winds was like hearing speeding trains going by each window of our house!

We lost power 6 times last night… our power is back on and we are fortunate. (4 million homes are estimated without power right now). No flooding water in our basement!! (Phew).

My heart aches for the lives lost in both New Jersey and all along the East Coast. Many lives lost. Unreal. New Jersey is simply: devastated. The news footage of New Jersey is enough to make me want to cry.

I am watching New Jersey Governor Christie on the news right now and he is spellbound by all the destruction in New Jersey. Homes along the shore there were picked up by the storm surge and dropped onto major highways, along with rail cars and large boats.

All the homes around our section of neighborhood (and directly across the street from us) have no power… yet we were spared a permanent power outage. Unreal.

I’d estimate close to all business are closed in the Allentown area, with the city of Philadelphia being closed. Trees and power lines down everywhere. Road closures are everywhere.

I am going outside now for the first time since noon-time yesterday to see what damage (if any) was done to the exterior of our house. Our yard is an absolute MESS… and that is nothing compared to what other people have suffered. I thank God that my family and I were kept safe through this hurricane experience (hell) that was named Sandy.

I’ll comment again soon with an update! Rock Steady Kev! \m/\m/

          • Glad to hear you and the family are safe Stone. Yeah, New Jersey really looks to have taken a helluva beating. Thoughts with everyone over there man. \m/\m/

  2. Stay safe – hunker down.

  3. I love your act of defiance. My mother, brother and sister all live in NJ so I’ll be thinking about you all. As REO Speedwagaon say, Ride the storm out.

    • Thanks 80’s Metalman! Yes, I remember you telling me about your family being in NJ… I wish them all the best as well!

I just hate the way hurricanes make their slow entry… it’s very aggravating and makes the mood so melancholy!

      Rock Steady \m/\m/

      • Glad to hear the worst is over and that you are safe. Saw the pictures of the NJ coast on the news here in the UK and it looks awful. My mother and sister are ok, my sister lost power though. I haven’t heard from my brother but I assume he’s ok. Metal thoughts are still with everybody.

        • Excellent news to hear that your family are alright in New Jersey! (Phew)… and I hope your brother is okay! 🙂

Took a ride around only a few blocks from our house late today… so many trees uprooted! Power out everywhere, hundreds of people traveling for many miles just to get Pizza at my neighborhood Pizza Hut (that has power). Our public schools cancelled for tomorrow again! Whoa.

Our house exterior received no damage and I can only be thankful for this. Like all storms, it just depends on luck… my neighbors house lost a good amount of siding.

          • Glad to hear that you and your family are safe and there’s not much damage to your home. My brother is fine, just couldn’t heat his house, the propane tank failed, better call Hank Hill (lol).

Now that’s dedication! All those people driving many miles to go to Pizza Hut. I guess everybody gets fed up of canned stuff after a while.

  4. Don’t forget the peanut butter and jelly. Hang in there and tell them I will be thinking about them. Be Metal Tough!!

  5. I hope that this storm passes without causing any damage or injuries to anyone.

Having been through many hurricanes in Florida and typhoons in Tokyo, I know what you’re feeling.

Let us know when it’s over and you and your family are safe!

    • Thanks Tokyo5! We actually went to the amusement park (across the street from our house) for 2 hours; just to get some last minute fun-times in before all hell breaks loose with this weather! It stopped raining for several hours…

It’s getting VERY WINDY as I write this… I was just outside and the wind gusts are very, very potent! Rain hasn’t returned yet, only the sky is downright evil…

      Will keep you posted 😉

      Rock Steady \m/\m/

  6. I hope you and your family all stay safe and that the disruption is minimal. All the best!

    • Thanks Metal Buddy! I just got in from picking up any and all items in the yard that could turn into flying debris of destruction! Whoa.

Winds are picking up… and it’s only the “outer bands” of the hurricane!

      Rock Steady \m/\m/

  7. wish you and your family all the best! btw i love the ending lol 😀 Rock on my friend!
    Renee \m/\m/

    • Thanks Renee! The weather has just taken a turn for the worse in the past hour… with wind (gusts) and speeds reaching around 45 mph and the rain coming down very, very heavy. This is just the beginning of the storm too… the “worst” is yet to come! OMG!

      Rock Steady \m/\m/
