KISS “UNMASKED” ALBUM POSTER FROM 1980 – CHECK IT OUT!

KISS – Back on May 20, 1980, Rock icons KISS released their 8th studio album – Unmasked. I honestly love this album, especially the songs Is That You?, Shandi, Naked City and She’s So European. I posted about how much I adore this KISS album back on September 3, 2009, you can check it out if you like by clicking the header below:

KISS “Unmasked” – 1980 album I listened to all Summer of 2009

This post is about the incredibly cool poster that came inside the album jacket of Unmasked. (Check out the pic below of me holding this KISS Unmasked poster gem). I never measured this poster for it’s exact dimensions, just by looking at the pic below will show you it’s big enough! I want to definitely frame this KISS Unmasked poster sometime soon. I’ve kept this poster safely tucked away within the Unmasked album jacket sleeve, along with the vinyl of course… since 1983!

I obtained this KISS Unmasked album and poster from a trade I made with a high school classmate… back in 1983. This dude wanted my Billy Squier – Emotions In Emotion album in exchange for this KISS Unmasked album! Back in 1983, when this dude requested this trade, I simply said… no problem! Man, it was a no brainer! I already had KISS Unmasked on 8 track… yes, 8 track, hey, this is 1983 we are discussing here. Therefore, my wanting KISS Unmasked on vinyl made perfect sense at the time… plus I knew the Unmasked poster was included with the trade too.

Don’t get me wrong, I really dig Billy Squier, always have and always will. That Emotions In Motion album is pretty solid, in my Metal opinion. Everybody Wants You and She’s A Runner are my two favorite songs from Emotions In Motion. However, this is a Metal trade that served me right!

I never hung this poster up on a wall, sounds crazy, yet I never had enough room to showcase all of my Rock, Hard Rock and Heavy Metal favorites back in the ’80’s. As I look back now, I’m glad I never did hang up this poster, it probably would have gotten ruined from thumb tacks and sun rays beating on it. This KISS Unmasked poster has been carefully preserved within it’s respective Unmasked album jacket sleeve, after all these years.

Here’s what my KISS Unmasked poster looks like:

This KISS Unmasked poster still has a nice glossy sheen to it too.

Here is the front cover to my KISS Unmasked album. There is some wear along the edges and corners of the album jacket, it has has been played/enjoyed many a time over the years!

Here’s what the back cover of my KISS Unmasked album jacket looks like:

LONG LIVE KISS ROCK ‘N’ ROLL!

  1. I have this poster in my “Unmasked” LP sleeve as well.
But the poster that came with the “Dynasty” LP got ruined from hanging on my wall when I was a kid.

Do you have the “Dynasty” poster too?

Have you read the interview that I did with Victor Stabin (the artist of the “Unmasked” album cover / poster)?

    It’s here:

Thank you for linking that interview with the “Unmasked” artist – Victor Stabin. That is really cool!!

This is unreal that you hung your “Dynasty” poster on the wall as a kid… I did the same! That poster was up on my bedroom wall for years! I am still searching around for it… hopefully I did keep it somewhere, still I fear it is gone. ):

My wife even kept her vinyl copy of “Dynasty”, yet she hung her poster on her bedroom door back in the day… and now it’s long gone. ):

      LONG LIVE THE KISS ARMY!

  2. I agree this is a good album. It’s cheesy, it’s something I would play only when I’m alone but I still like it.

The 1997 remastered CD also features the foldout poster. Of course, it’s a lot smaller.

    • metalodyssey Says:

I do listen to “Unmasked” a lot. You should still be proud to crank up this “Unmasked” album/CD loud and proud among a group of dudes too! As I see it, it’s still better than half of the “stuff” that came out in the 80’s decade alone! IMO.

It is cool that the “smaller” version of this poster was included in the remastered version. Those liner notes in all of the remastered KISS CD’s, detailing background information about the albums, are really good stuff. Albeit, at times, the writing for these historical tid bits in the liner notes seem opinionated. Still, the facts are what’s really fun.

  3. Love the poster, hate the album. It’s in the bottom three of the KISS catalog along with the Elder and Hot in the shade.

    • metalodyssey Says:

It is inevitable to have a “bottom three” albums with the KISS catalog. Mine would be, by process of elimination… Crazy Nights, Asylum and The Elder. However, I do enjoy listening to Crazy Nights!

  5. I’m in the minority with The Elder. I love that album.

Check out this KISS poster that I photographed last night at a Lizzy Borden concert.

    • metalodyssey Says:

Now… that’s a very fine KISS poster indeed! I get a “kick” out of the “special guests” being… Iron Maiden! Thanks for adding that to the Metal discussion Sean!

By the way… how was Lizzy Borden? I’m guessing the night flat out – Rocked. I’ll check out The Metal Files for your story…

MAN I WAS ONLY 5 YEARS OLD WHEN IRON MAIDEN OPENED FOR KISS ON THEIR FIRST TOUR WITH PAUL DI’ANNO. I HAVE BEEN A MAIDEN & KISS FAN FOR YEARS. MAIDEN WAS MY FAV BAND ALL GROWING UP. I HAVE SEEN THEM A MILLION TIMES NUT NEVER WITH PAUL DIANNO. NOW THAT WOULD BE A REUNION. …YEAH…I HEARD KISS ONLY PLAYED ONE U.S. DATE FOR THE UNMASKED TOUR, AT THE NEW YORK PALLADIUM, AND THEN THEY TOURED AUSTRALIA AND EUROPE WITH MAIDEN OPENING. THAT WOULD HAVE ROCKED. PLUS, THAT WAS RIGHT WHEN ERIC CARR JOINED KISS SO THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN COOL TO SEE “THE FOX” IN HIS PRIME. RIP ERIC…. ANYWAYS…LOVE CLASSIC MAIDEN…..AND KLASSIC KISS FUCKIN ROCKS!!!!!!!!!

    • metalodyssey Says:

I guess from everything I’ve read over the years, “Unmasked” was a HUGE album in Australia for KISS. “Shandi” is THE song over there in Australia… with KISS performing it in their live concerts down under. I actually just saw some “recent” footage of KISS live in Australia, on “The Family Jewels” and Paul Stanley was doing an acoustic number of “Shandi”… the camera showed the Australian fans singing along to this song and they were quite psyched.

My “personal” top ten bands of all time have KISS and Iron Maiden in it… with Maiden just being the world wide Metal leaders that they are!
