Since their steely inception back in 2006, dungeon keeper Zach Schottler (AKA Zach Slaughter) and his shredding band of reckless companions have released three classic heavy metal almanacs, have eaten more dust than is good for their health, have endured various hardships and propped up countless beers at countless bars in countless cities. But now, after fifteen years of metal and mayhem, Schottler is coming into his own with the proverbially titled Paid In Full album, a heavy metal wonder of the defiant middle finger variant.
Delivering tales of steel and legends from the underworld, Paid In Full was written at home, recorded at Vespa Studios near Toronto, and encompasses Schottler’s sonic efforts of the past two years. With heads held high, empty pockets, and enough gas to make the next show, SKULL FIST has won 2022. Don’t mess with the FIST. The FIST is the law!

Toronto heavy metal unit SKULL FIST has more guts and balls than the police allow. Since their leg-busting beginnings in 2006, dungeon keeper Zach Schottler and his shredding gang of reckless accomplices have released three archetypal heavy metal almanacs, eaten more dust than is good for their health, endured hardships, and propped up countless beers in countless bars in countless cities. Now, after fifteen years on behalf of steel, the trio signs a worldwide record deal with Atomic Fire Records.
Schottler comments, “Pretty stoked about this. The world and music industry is sketchy as hell so its nice to be working with someone that isn’t considering stabbing me for a few bucks. Markus and Flori are rad dudes and so far, the rest of their team are genuinely more interested in music than dollars. It’s nice to see, so let’s see.”
Florian Milz, label manager of Atomic Fire Records, adds. “I’ve known Zach and the band for a long time and have worked with them in the past. I love their music and am very happy that we get to release the new upcoming album through Atomic Fire Records. The Fist is the law!”
The new SKULL FIST album will be released this April with further details to be announced in the coming weeks.

Los Angeles, CA – Muscle-bound superheroes THOR are set to fly to Heavy Metal’s very own Valhalla, Hollywood CA, on Saturday, May 24th, for an explosive performance at the Loaded club on Hollywood Blvd. This Vancouver outfit originated in the early ‘70s with body building champion and former Mr. USA Jon Mikl Thor and quickly gained a devout following thanks in part to the band’s elaborate and supremely entertaining live shows, which frequently featured Jon performing not just outstanding anthems of Metal but also astounding feats of strength; bending steel bars with his teeth and exploding water bottles with his lungs! Jon would go on to appear on the Merv Griffin Show in 1976, which led to a licensing deal with RCA and the release of THOR’s debut album Keep The Dogs Away the following year.
But it wasn’t until the group’s 1985 album, Only The Strong, that Jon Mikl & Co. really began to flex their muscles. Recorded in the UK, the album produced two British chart-topping classics, Let The Blood Run Red and Thunder On The Tundra, earning the band a truly international following. Now, on the eve of the 30th anniversary of its release, Deadline Music will offer a special deluxe CD/DVD edition of this metal masterpiece!
Billed as the COMPLETE THOR experience, this set includes the entire Only The Strong album along with several rare and unreleased bonus tracks PLUS an incredible 60 minute concert DVD capturing the band in live performances during their early ‘80s heyday, performing stunts and ripping through their best songs – all packaged in a gorgeous 8 panel digipak with a full color 16-page booklet!
Jon Mikl Thor enthuses: “I am ready to take the THOR visual and sound experience to the entertainment capital of the world! What better place to launch the Only The Strong CD/DVD deluxe edition! As the Superhero Thundergod of Rock N’ Roll, I promise a night of startling Metal and entertainment for all!”

Snakes And Metal – What makes snakes so attractive to Metal? It must be the biblical reference/story of Satan taking the form of a serpent in the Garden Of Eden. No? Maybe it’s the snake being profiled throughout history as simply… evil? No? What about many, many snakes being downright intimidating and venomous? Yes? Regardless the reasoning, snakes are undoubtedly badass; and Metal is badass.
I chose to pick some of my favorite Metal album covers that depict, in various grand forms, the almighty, evil and often times misunderstood snake. I surely hope y’all like the album covers I’ve chosen. For certain, there are probably one million other album covers out there with a snake or two on them, I just cannot list them all! However, feel free to share which snake themed album cover you dig and which did not show up here, via comment.
The Whitesnake Lovehunter album cover (at top of post) is my all-time favorite snake themed album cover. No, no, no… it’s not because of the gal’s naked butt either; although I’ve never complained about it. I first fell in love with this album cover as a graphic design student, many light years ago, back in college. I absolutely cherish the artwork of Lovehunter and countless other works of world-renowned painter/illustrator Chris Achilleos.
WARNING: If you suffer from Ophidiophobia or ophiophobia, which is the abnormal fear of snakes, feel free to leave and visit an ABBA or U2 website.
SATYRICON – VOLCANO
Released back in 2002, this fifth album from the powerful Satyricon depicts a snake that looks 100% evil. Pure evil. A perfect Satyricon album cover! It’s as if this snake will leap from the cover and bite my face off. I love that! Plus, I love this album and band.
PANTERA – THE GREAT SOUTHERN TRENDKILL
Released back in 1996, The Great Southern Trendkill is another album I infinitely love. PANTERA is personified to perfection with this snake, cause it looks extremely pissed-off and ready to strike! This snake doesn’t seem like it wants to f*$K around; it looks like it wants to kill and eat anything in its path. Neat.
FIGHT OR FLIGHT – A LIFE BY DESIGN?
Released in 2013, A Life By Design by the Metal/Hard Rock supergroup Fight Or Flight is a tremendous album! I wish I had room to put it on my best of list, from last year. The album cover depicts a creepy, creepy snake that has syringes for fangs! Ouch!! Plus, that melancholy driven corn field as a back-drop, only worsens the nightmare for me. Excellent!
ALICE COOPER – CONSTRICTOR
Compare this snake on Alice Cooper’s Constrictor cover and it doesn’t look to be as mean-spirited as the others on this list. However, this snake is wrapping itself around Alice Cooper’s neck and face rather well. A very commercial Alice Cooper album from 1986, I do enjoy listening to it for its over-the-top mid-80’s MTV and Arena charm.
ESCAPE THE FATE – THIS WAR IS OURS
This sophomore album from Escape The Fate I don’t own. I do own their last two releases. With that out-of-the-way, This War Is Ours, from 2008, has snakes bookending their band logo in a subtle, yet very cool way. Sometimes, less snake is more. The overall artwork is solid as hell too.
_____________________________
That concludes this Snakes and Metal list! Thanks for taking part! Perhaps y’all dug it? If not, please feel free to pull out your Barbara Streisand CD’s and crank ’em up to the point of constipation. Metal be thy name.

In celebration of its forthcoming release, Germany power metal masters, GAMMA RAY, offer up a whopping six tracks from their forthcoming new full-length, Empire Of The Undead, set for release next month.
In a mammoth, collaborative promotional effort, Bravewords, Decibel Magazine and Metal Insider, unite, each bringing fans two tracks from the record.
Sample “Avalon” and “Pale Rider,” currently streaming at
Bravewords HERE.
“Born To Fly” and “Master Of Confusion,” at Decibel HERE.
“Time For Deliverance” and “Demonseed,” at Metal Insider HERE.
A record that almost wasn’t, Empire Of The Undead was composed throughout 2013 with Eike Freese (Dark Age) at the mixing desk alongside bassist/co-writer, Dirk Schlächter, and was nearing completion before Hammer Studios, their home, rehearsal space, and meeting point for many Metal bands throughout Germany, had burned down leaving much of its contents in ruins. Fortunately, the Empire Of The Undead masters managed to make it through unscathed. “If this could not stop us, nothing ever will,” joked light-hearted GAMMA RAY vocalist Kai Hansen, adding that, “We got rid of a lot of shit that we gathered there. Unfortunately, a lot of good equipment as well. Anyhow, we look towards the future, we saved the production and we can continue now in this new place.”
More than four years since the release of their critically acclaimed tenth full-length, To The Metal!, Empire Of The Undead is over an hour-long and showcases a band more ambitious and variable than ever before. From the symphonic bombast of album opener “Avalon,” to the high-speed, Judas Priestian drive of “Hellbent,” GAMMA RAY manages to tread through an entire spectrum of Heavy Metal. Elsewhere the band seamlessly explores the realms of driving Hard Rock (“Pale Rider”) – a stylistic element Hansen honed from his time with side project Unisonic; triumphant Power Metal anthems (“I Will Return”) and emotional Rock ballads (“Time For Deliverance”).
Adding to its sonic diversity is the notable variation in Hansen’s characteristically high-pitched, voice. On “Master Of Confusion” from 2013’s eponymous EP, Hansen’s timbre is reminiscent of Billy Idol while the anthemesque “Seven” is suddenly punctuated by a sinister recitative, cleverly decelerating the song’s speed before finally exploding in a great choir finale.
“As far as variation is concerned, I think that’s something we always craved for, something we always needed. To just do the same thing on ten or eleven songs is boring in some way,” Hansen remarks. “I always liked albums that had a certain variety in style in some way, as long as everything fits together. We always took the freedom to do what we liked and since I like so many different things, this album has become quite manifold…There’s definitely more bite and heaviness on this album. Since I’ve been pretty busy with Unisonic, which is more on the hardrock /AOR side of things, there has definitely been a need to be as bad as can be with GAMMA RAY now….”
Empire Of The Undead will be released in North America on CD, LP and digitally via Armoury Records in conjunction with earMusic on April 15, 2014.

Cincinnati, Ohio – The Warriors of Metal, Inc. non-profit organization is very excited to welcome back the only band to headline the fest three years in a row. Dallas-based Traditional Metal professionals ASKA, who headlined in 2009, 2010 and 2011, has officially signed on as the Friday night headliner for our 7th annual Warriors Of Metal Fest. ASKA will be supporting their sixth studio album, Fire Eater which was released through Germany’s Pure Steel Records in September of last year.
The 7th annual Warriors of Metal Fest will be held June 27 – 28 at O’Shecky’s LIVE Bar & Grill in Columbus, Ohio.
Band founder, vocalist and guitarist, George Call states: “When we here at ASKA were approached by the brain trust about coming back to Warriors of Metal and headlining Friday’s portion of the fest I said, ‘Awesome! Who do we gotta kill?’ Not because we actually wanted to kill anyone but you get the sentiment right? After all, who wouldn’t want to get back to, perform for and hang out with those beloved portions of our extended metal family that the Warriors of Metal Fest has come to represent? See, WOM is not just a fest where we perform for fans but one in which we bleed, sweat, laugh and commune with our brothers and sisters of Metal. It really is one big family and the ‘blood’ that unites us is STEEL. And so it is with that sentiment that we look forward to this latest installment of the Warriors of Metal Festival, now indoors, come June – because just as much as you want to see ASKA, ASKA wants to see you. Dig? Hail and see you all at WOM Fest VII!”
ASKA is brought back to Warriors of Metal Fest VII due to the generous fan sponsorships by Kit & Jen Ekman from Mobile, Alabama, brothers Edward and Mike Schmidt from Cleveland, Ohio, Dennis Schwan and Megan Stewart from Detroit, Michigan, and last but not least, Lance Souther & Laurie Rhodes from Dayton, Ohio. We are grateful for their contributions and constant support through the years.
Tickets are on sale and various levels of sponsorship opportunities are now available at the Fest’s website at www.warriorsofmetal.org.

LUCIFER’S HAMMER – I’m gonna say it straight, Lucifer’s Hammer has made this Metalhead one happy Metal camper! Just in time for Spring, this tidy, 3 song EP from Santiago, Chile’s, True Metal troupe, will be raging LOUD from my home stereo speakers, laptop and car. It’s time to crank the windows down and blast some Lucifer’s F’n Hammer! Yet again, a fine new band that has tapped into the True Metal sound of yesteryear!
Night Sacrifice (Demo MMXII) has a Metal ton going for it, with the (old school) vocal echoes included! From the info I’ve gathered, Lucifer’s Hammer is: Hades (Vocals, Guitars) and Titan (Drums). These two Metal dudes have flat-out nailed it! I’d hate to see this band refine a damn thing; the raw and retrospective vibes that jump out of these 3 songs makes damn cool Metal sense to me!
True/Traditional Metal fans cannot pass up on Lucifer’s Hammer! Fans of (early) Manowar, Witch Cross, Hell, Sinister Realm, Satan, (early) Iron Maiden, (early) Judas Priest, (early) Fates Warning, Obsession and the (original) NWOBHM explosion must give Lucifer’s Hammer a listen!

TANK – We are looking forward to getting the band back out on the road again in Spring 2014.
Shows are currently under negotiation for dates and festivals across Europe and we have been approached by promoters in new territories that TANK have never performed in before. There are a lot of fans out there that have never had the chance to see TANK play a live show. Hopefully we can make it happen for them this year. Mick and Cliff are busy writing new songs for the next TANK studio album.
After the great success of the last two releases, WAR MACHINE and WAR NATION, the guys are working hard to make the next offering another big step forward in the evolution of TANK.
Mick – “We’re always looking to push the boundaries of Metal but we never lose sight of our roots”.
Cliff – “Metal is in our blood. We’ve been there since day one. You can’t take that away from us”.

SATAN is a Heavy Metal band originating from Newcastle, England in 1980, known as part of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal movement. Though generally obscure throughout their career, the band is considered influential for playing a form of proto-thrash metal that was fairly advanced by the standards of the early 1980s.
Their 1983 debut album, Court In The Act, is now widely acclaimed and regarded by many as the pinnacle of their career, during which the band’s line-up underwent a number of personnel changes and even changes in band name, releasing albums under the name of BLIND FURY and PARIAH, before folding in 1990. Guitarist Steve Ramsey and bassist Graeme English went on to found folk metal band SKYCLAD, while vocalist Brian Ross reformed his original band BLITZKRIEG.
SATAN remained inactive until re-assembling for a one-off gig at Germany’s Wacken Open Air in 2004, and finally reunited in their original Court In The Act line-up for 2011’s Keep It True festival. The band performed at several european festivals in 2011 and 2012 and have announced more festival shows and even a new album for 2013, to mark the 30th anniversary of Court In The Act‘s release. Bow to your knees, SATAN was back with its new album Life Sentence, released in April 2013 on Listenable Records.
Life Sentence was featured on many a “Best Of 2013” lists, and has been heralded as one of the best comeback album of the decade.
