Metal Odyssey – Stone Picks His Top 30 METAL Albums Of 2012

2012 was a GRAND year for METAL. Each day that I live and breathe, it’s a GRAND day for METAL. Here are the TOP 30 METAL ALBUMS that made my 2012 METAL year complete. Okay, there’s really 32 METAL albums on this list, cause there’s 2 ties. Oh darn. It’s like the legendary Lenny Wolf of Kingdom Come would say: It is what it isMy personal METAL Crème de la crème of 2012 is below and let those METAL bells toll.

These are the METAL albums released during 2012 that I turned to most often and highly recommend to ALL. Each album below bestows the METAL qualities my METAL senses and soul yearns for. I want to thank each and every band below for existing and creating these albums. METAL BE THY NAME.

Links you’ll find on this list will take you to the reviews and/or other features I wrote, in regards to that respective album. Thank you for your supporting METAL and Metal Odyssey!

Dragonforce - The Power Within - cover promo pic!

DRAGONFORCE “The Power Within” – Rises To New Melodic Power Metal Heights; Features New Vocalist Marc Hudson

Coheed And Cambria - The Afterman promo cover pic!

My favorite Progressive Metal album of 2012. Metal Odyssey promoted COHEED AND CAMBRIA at each and every step, leading up to this album’s release. The Afterman: Ascension lived up to its positive pre-release billing to my ears… and then some.

Fear Factory - The Industrialist - cover promo pic!

Burton C. Bell and Dino Cazares are Industrial Metal icons. ‘Nuff said. Okay, this album is a thunder slap of Industrial Metal on my brain.

FEAR FACTORY – Let’s Ponder The Concept Of ‘The Industrialist’

Adrenaline Mob - Omerta promo cover pic!

This supergroup led by the legendary Mike Portnoy is THE REAL METAL DEAL. Wouldn’t be surprised to see this album #1 on other end-of-year lists throughout the METAL community.

ADRENALINE MOB “Omertà” – 5 Quick Reasons To Buy This Album

Saint Vitus - Lillie - F-65 - promo cover!

SAINT VITUS IS BACK! This album is already a DOOM METAL classic in my METAL world.

NIGHTQUEEN ‘For Queen And Metal’ – An Indelible Debut Album Of Heavy Metal

Bad Brains - Into The Future - promo cover pic!

#16 (Tie)

The Hardcore Punk meets Reggae meets Rock meets METAL sound of the iconic BAD BRAINS cannot be duplicated. Ever since I bought INTO THE FUTURE, I have been a student of this band once again. I can’t put my finger on it, yet this new BAD BRAINS album carries me off into a who-gives-a-f**ck state of mind; helping me to cope with all the unnecessary bad shit happening in the world today.

Black Tora - Raise Your Fists - promo cover pic!

#16 (Tie)

This 5 song EP from BLACK TORA is an ultra-potent dosage of old school Heavy Metal that screams relevance simultaneously. From Mcallen, Texas, Chris Daniel (vocals & bass), RazorDave (guitar) and Nicky X (drums) have made a lasting METAL impression on me. ALL 5 songs kick some serious Heavy Rockin’ ass and I’m psyched-out to tell you just that.

BLACK TORA “Never Enough” – Official Music Video Is All About: Psych-You-Out Of Your Brains Heavy Rock!

Corrosion Of Conformity - promo album pic!!

One of the greatest bands ever to incorporate Rock ‘N Roll, Punk, Heavy Metal, Stoner, Sludge and… well, the genres are endless with C.O.C. and at the end of the day this band is atop the METAL food chain looking down at the countless bands they’ve influenced. BUY THIS ALBUM!!

CORROSION OF CONFORMITY – ‘Corrosion Of Conformity’ – Get Ready Cause This Heady Album Transports The Very Heavy, Very Steady

Testament - Dark Roots Of Earth - promo cover pic!

Seeing this band live in 2012 was one of the greatest moments in my METAL life. DARK ROOTS OF EARTH may very well be the BEST Thrash Metal album of 2012.

Lamb Of God - Resolution - promo cover pic #2

The METAL musicianship of LAMB OF GOD takes a back seat to no METAL band in the land. There, I said it. Long live Randy Blythe, Mark Morton, Will Adler, John Campbell and Chris Adler. RESOLUTION is that CD that I carry around with me… just to make sure it’s safe and sound.

Iron Savior - The Landing promo cover pic!

#12 (Tie)

I love this album so much it makes me cry. Really. I’m not kidding around.

IRON SAVIOR ‘The Landing’ – German Power Metal Force Returns, In A Mammoth Way!

Reverence - When Darkness Calls - promo cover pic!

#12 (Tie)

From KID ROCK’s hometown comes the Power Metal (Supergroup) famously known as REVERENCE. If Classic Metal, American-made Power Metal or any METAL is your addiction, then REVERENCE is REQUIRED METAL ear candy! These seasoned Metallions kick METAL ass. Period.

REVERENCE – Too Late (Official Video) Is Stone’s Metal Pick Of The Day!

Down IV - Part I - The Purple EP - cover promo pic!

Philip Anselmo on vocals, Jimmy Bower on drums, Pat Bruders on bass, Pepper Keenan on guitar and Kirk Windstein on guitar = DOWN. If you don’t do DOWN… you aren’t METAL.

69 Chambers - Torque - promo cover pic!

69 Chambers has so much upside as a band that it’s downright scary. Musical talent personified. From Rock to METAL, 69 Chambers can play it all and I’ll be doing headstands over Torque for many years to come!

69 CHAMBERS “The Peep Hole” – Official Music Video: Stone’s Metal Pick Of The Day!

69 CHAMBERS “Cause And Effect” Featuring Chrigel Glanzmann – Official Music Video Is Stone’s Metal Pick Of The Day!

DORO - Raise Your Fist - Large Promo Cover Pic!!

HAIL DORO, THE HEAVY METAL QUEEN! This DORO album is so terrific, it underscores why DORO is synonymous with: Heavy Metal Legends.

DORO “Raise Your Fist” – Heavy Metal Queen’s New Album Is: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

The Wretched End - Inroads - cover promo pic - #2!

When the super-legendary Samoth makes a new record with his band… Stone listens. This very, very heavy album is very dark and very, very, very good. A top ten METAL album in any METAL year on record, for me.

THE WRETCHED END “INROADS” – This Dark & Extreme Metal Album Is: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

3 Inches Of Blood - Long Live Heavy Metal - promo cover pic!

3 INCHES OF BLOOD gets it. This is an album that is Classic METAL from front-to-back and side-to-side. LONG LIVE HEAVY METAL is Classic METAL whoop-ass that I crave.

3 Inches Of Blood “Long Live Heavy Metal” – This Album Is: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

Texas Hippie Coalition - Peacemaker - cover promo large pic!

Red Dirt Metal. Best get to know what that is. Best way to find out is BUY this THC album known as PEACEMAKER. This album is not recommended by Stone… it’s HIGHLY F’N RECOMMENDED by Stone.

TEXAS HIPPIE COALITION ‘PEACEMAKER’ – A Paramount Hard & Heavy Rock Album; One You Should Be Required To Own

BIG DAD RITCH of TEXAS HIPPIE COALITION – An Exclusive Interview With The Champion Of Red Dirt Metal

Six Feet Under - Undead - promo cover pic #3!

UNDEAD is the BEST Death Metal album released in 2012. Chris Barnes and his band should take a METAL bow for this one. Unless you lose your hearing from playing this album super F’n LOUD, UNDEAD is as close to Death Metal perfection as you’re gonna hear.

SIX FEET UNDER “UNDEAD” – A Merciless Sonic Experience Of Death Metal

ORANGE GOBLIN - An Eulogy for the Damned promo cover pic!

This album is mandatory METAL. ORANGE GOBLIN has created an album here that is the METAL icing on their catalog of GREAT METAL.

ORANGE GOBLIN – ‘A Eulogy For The Damned’: This Album Is Mandatory Metal, My Metal Brethren

Soulfly - Enslaved - promo cover pic!

SOULFLY is easily one of the finest METAL bands that ever existed. If you’ve never listened to SOULFLY, start with ENSLAVED and work your way backwards through their exemplary METAL catalog. METAL diversity is what makes SOULFLY so damn powerful and ENSLAVED is an instant METAL classic for me.

SOULFLY ‘ENSLAVED’ – Soulfly Has Raised Their Own Bar Of Metal Excellence

Primal Fear - unbreakable cover promo!!

PRIMAL FEAR has psyched me out of my METAL brains more times than I can count. PRIMAL FEAR has done it again with UNBREAKABLE. This album is so pumped-up with ultra-powerful METAL sound, feel and vibes that it’s not only “unbreakable”… it’s F’n unstoppable! Metal be thy name!

PRIMAL FEAR ‘Unbreakable’ – The Time Is NOW To Join The METAL NATION

Angel Witch - As Above So Below - Promo Cover Pic - Large!

Kevin Heybourne (guitar, vocals & founding member) has resurrected ANGEL WITCH back to True METAL prominence. This once NWOBHM pioneering band has reminded their faithful that METAL history can repeat itself with As Above, So Below. The atmosphere and raw, classic METAL (era) vibes that are projected from this album are jaw-dropping to an old school Metalhead like myself.

As Above, So Below has put me into a retrospective METAL la-la dream world. To say that this album is perfect in so many ways is not over-stretching any truths on my METAL part. The mood that this album puts me in is difficult to explain; it’s as if I’m once again introduced to what METAL was and is supposed to sound like. I suppose that’s cause to label the affects this ANGEL WITCH album has had on me as… priceless.

ANGEL WITCH “As Above, So Below” Is: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

CHIP DIMONICK “The Sign Of A New Generation” – Is Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

Posted in glam rock, Hair Metal, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Music, rock bands, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on November 27, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

CHIP DIMONICK – Party Rock is here to stay and Chip DiMonick has made this very loud and clear on their fourth album: The Sign Of A New Generation. This fun-fabulous and rifftastic 5 song offering from Chip DiMonick is downright Rockin’ Righteous and should be on any Rockaholic’s list of good-times-must-have albums from 2012. You just gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta let Chip DiMonick Rockify your brain! I have. It feels F’n cool.

Chip DiMonick became famous on the Pittsburgh music scene back in 2005, with the debut release Bat An Eyelash causing a formidable stir upon the East Coast. Opening for such kick-ass national acts as Wednesday 13, Lynch MobLA Guns, Adelita’s Way and Art Of Dying, Chip DiMonick shouldn’t be an underground Heavy Rock band for too much longer. Then again, the underground scene wouldn’t want to see Chip DiMonick go anyways!

There’s something to be said about real FUN Party Rock that Chip DiMonick serves up and that is: IT KICKS FUN ROCKIN’ ASS! When a song such as When The Drunkest Girls Wear The Shortest Skirts gets me all fired-up and singing along… then Chip DiMonick have accomplished their Rockin’ deed they’ve aimed for and I’m grateful for it. Ring that Party Rock bell and tell your lame-ass neighbors to go to hell. Metal be thy name.

My favorite song on The Sign Of A New Generation is She Won’t Let Me Play. Holy shit I love this song. This song should be played on every (supposedly cool) FM and satellite radio station in the entire F’n universe. Big drums, big bass and big guitars are abundant on all 5 songs, coupled with the stylish vocals of Chip DiMonick himself.

From Pump (the anthem inspired by the pride of Pittsburgh sports scene) to its anthemic counterpart (and party-crazed igniter) title song, Chip DiMonick doesn’t hold back on raising the mercury on the psyche-your-adrenaline meter! If you’re uptight and/or constipated, get lost. Cool people, all-night party maniacs, Rockaholics, fun Rock chicks (who can stay out late) and fans of 80’s Arena Rock, Hard Rock and Glam will appreciate what Chip DiMonick have accomplished with their new album. Metal be thy name.

Track list: 1. Pump, 2. Too Young For Tattoos, 3. The Sign Of A New Generation, 4. When The Drunkest Girls Wear The Shortest Skirts, 5. She Won’t Let Me Play.

Chip DiMonick – lead vocals & guitar

Carmen “CC” Capozzi – drums, background vocals, tambourine

Joe P. – bass & background vocals

Tony Leone – lead guitar & background vocals

Original Judas Priest Vocalist Al Atkins and Christian Guitarist Paul May Enter The ‘Valley Of Shadows’ With New ATKINS MAY PROJECT CD

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on November 11, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

London, UK – The rock world is buzzing with the revelation that good and evil can continue to work together in the form of former Judas Priest vocal legend and heavy metal frontman Al Atkins and Christian guitarist and music artist Paul May. Together these extreme opposites have come together once again to create a powerful new CD called Valley Of Shadows, now available on Gonzo Multimedia. Here once again, the men from the “Black Country” have produced an album of outstanding quality straight from the “Home of Metal”! This excellent collection of songs sees Atkins deliver some stand out vocal performances and May shred the axe like the old guitar masters.

‘Valley Of Shadows’ offers 10 “killer” tracks that burst with melody and metal mayhem. You’ll take a journey through what seems to be an “evolution” of rock. With all the elements of “classic” hard rock and metal, yet retaining an underlying progressive core, ‘Valley Of Shadows’ will not disappoint fans of the genre who decide to take the ride!

Says Al Atkins: “We have kept the same format for ‘Valley Of Shadows’ since it worked really well for our debut album ‘Serpent’s Kiss’, so we thought why change a winning formula.” Paul May adds: “I think the new album definitely leans more towards that ‘classic rock’ feel, with some modern twists thrown in for good measure, retaining its metal edge.”

Al Atkins: Noted for forming UK’s Judas Priest and fronting them for four years and laying down the foundations which would see them eventually selling 40 million albums worldwide. He also wrote songs for them which went gold like “Dreamer Deceiver”, “Never Satisfied”, “Winter”, “Caviar and Meths” and Priest’s all time classic “Victim of Changes”. Al’s unique powerful vocal style sites influences by noted rock singers Roger Daltrey, Paul Rodgers and longtime friend Robert Plant. Al has done countless radio and TV interviews worldwide and recently featured in the BBC TV ‘British Heritage’. He has even written a book on his musical life about growing up in Birmingham, UK alongside Robert Plant and Black Sabbath called ‘Dawn of the Metal Gods’. Al has released 6 solo albums to date, and teamed up with brilliant Christian writer/guitarist Paul May to record their critically acclaimed debut album ‘Serpent’s Kiss’.

Paul May: Some people learn to play guitar, Paul was born (again) to play guitar! Paul has become respected for his passionate, soulful guitar work and noted for his explosive and exciting solos. As a world-class professional guitarist and songwriter, Paul has played and recorded sessions across the globe, touring and playing throughout the UK, Europe, USA and the Eastern block. Paul appears on around 50 albums to date, featured in both the secular and Christian arenas. Paul is also a record producer and has covered the entire spectrum of musical tastes in production.

Now with the release of the new Atkins May Project CD, the dichotomous duo are ready once again to bring their special brand of rock and metal to the masses. Although the CD has no definite concept there are certain underlying themes that run throughout the songs. “The album is mainly about facing trials of life and the ‘demons’ you encounter on the way,” Paul explains. “It’s about standing up and being counted when you understand who you are. The title ‘Valley Of Shadows’ relates to many things…that dark night of the soul that finds us all…”

In closing Al has this to impart to the band’s fans, “We would like to say a big thanks to all our fans and friends that we have amassed over the long years and would just like to say..’KEEP IT METAL.’”

Atkins May Project – ‘Valley Of Shadows’ is available through Gonzo MultiMedia and can be purchased at:

3 Inches Of Blood “Long Live Heavy Metal” – This Album Is: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

Posted in album reviews, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on October 16, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

3 INCHES OF BLOOD – Call ’em Classic Metal, Old School Metal, Traditional Metal, True Metal or a second generation of NWOBHM. I’m calling 3 Inches Of Blood: Damn Righteous Metal. Man, if you are looking to purchase a Metal CD today, allow me to highly recommend the new album from 3 Inches Of Blood. I absolutely need to listen to this newest offering from 3 Inches Of Blood, like, everyday!

Long Live Heavy Metal is the title of this new 3 Inches Of Blood release, (released back on March 26th, 2012, via Century Media). The album title says it all! All 12 songs on Long Live Heavy Metal absolutely cooks my fellow Metal brethren! This Canadian Metal band had already gotten me hooked several years ago, with their sound and overall retrospective Metal energy that they generate; only their fifth studio album here is downright incredible stuff! Whoa! I’m very psyched-out by this album and refuse to hold it in any longer!

Justin Hagberg and Shane Clark are insane guitarists! Metal be thy name, do these two guys compliment each other. Talk about sick guitar licks, this album is bursting at the Metal seams with them! Talk about shock and awe guitar solos, Look Out is a 100% fantastic Metal experience to hear and breathe in! Guitar driven is an understatement here. This is Metal guitar 101 and 3 Inches Of Blood don’t seem to give once ounce of crap about trends. Hell, there’s even a song that opens up this album called Metal Woman and it kicks superior Metal ass to the maximum!

Cam Pipes on vocals is spectacular and I’m not kidding around. Every time I listen to Cam Pipes belt out the notes, it brings back those sweet Metal memories of being introduced to Rob Halford’s voice on all those classic Judas Priest records. Yeah… Cam Pipes is that good. This entire 3 Inches Of Blood band is that good. I’m not messing around when I tell y’all that Long Live Heavy Metal is a super-potent contender for Metal Odyssey’s Metal Album Of 2012; that’s why 3 Inches Of Blood and Long Live Heavy Metal is: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day! Metal be thy name.

DORO “Raise Your Fist” – Heavy Metal Queen’s New Album Is: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

Posted in classic rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, heavy metal songs, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on October 14, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

DORO – Releasing on November 6th, via Nuclear Blast, the 12th studio album from the legendary DORO shall be released upon the Heavy Metal masses. Raise Your Fist is the new album and fans of DORO will be guaranteed to raise their fists to what they’ll be listening to… on high volume! The Queen Of Heavy Metal has never wavered in her pride of keeping the tradition of Heavy Metal alive and loud with her albums; Raise Your Fist is no exception!

From Raise Your Fist In The Air to Victory, the Heavy Metal thunder of DORO is unmistakably a listen into a world of Heavy Metal that is both triumphant and so real to us fans; the fans who’ve earned their loyalty to Metal badges decades ago or this very year. It Still Hurts is a ballad with the iconic Lemmy Kilmister and is the one moment on this album that pulls the plug on the psyche-you-out meter. Regardless, I do respect this song and having Doro Pesch and Lemmy sing a duet together is a grand historical Heavy Metal moment to treasure.

Raise Your Fist In The Air is my #1 choice for Metal Odyssey’s Heavy Metal Anthem Of 2012. Grab The Bull (Last Man Standing) is as outstanding of a song from DORO as there can be and legendary axe slinger Gus G. guests with his signature six-string fire power. As for the band, I applaud each and every member of DORO. These guys have proven their Heavy Metal prowess time and again during their respective careers and are exemplary once again on Raise Your Fist.

Engel and Freiheit (Human Rights) are sung by Doro Pesch in her native German and they’re shining Heavy Metal moments on this album; despite my not knowing a word of German myself! The vibes, mood, atmosphere and emotion that resonates from Engel and Freiheit (Human Rights) are more than enough to make this middle-aged Metalhead gleefully content.

Hero is the song that ends Raise Your Fist. Hero is also a song that brings tears to my eyes and softens my Metal heart like there’s no tomorrow. I broke down when I first heard this song and I still kinda do each time it’s played. This is a song that Doro Pesch has written and dedicated to the late and forever great Ronnie James Dio. Hero is brilliant lyrically and musically, I couldn’t be more truthful by stating this.

Doro Pesch is a vocalist and songwriter that has touched the Metal hearts and souls of her countless fans for decades. She is our Heavy Metal Queen. Both Doro Pesch and her band receive a well deserved standing Metal ovation from this fan, for their Heavy Metal creation that’s called Raise Your Fist. Metal be thy name.

KISS “MONSTER” (Some Fun & Rockin’ Thoughts From Stone, Part 1) – My Favorite Song Revealed!

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on October 12, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

KISS – Okay. Unless you’ve been living on the Moon or have been out-of-touch with humanity for the past year, there is a brand new KISS album for sale and it’s called: MONSTER. The 20th studio album from the ICONIC KISS was released this past Tuesday, on October 9th, via UMe. Yup, this new album is exactly that… an F’n MONSTER and I mean that in the most grandest way too. Metal be thy name and ring that KISS Army bell. Tell all the naysayers and posers to go to F’n hell.

You see, being a lifetime KISSaholic, how could I write an album review for MONSTER with just one post? I did write reviews in the past for other KISS albums; where I cover the album’s songs and how it sounds, feels, blah, blah, blah and F’n blah again. This time around, for MONSTER, I’m gonna do things a tad different. I’ll write about one song, about the album cover or whatever the hell I want to write about, in reference to this ABSOLUTE ROCKING KISS ALBUM. One F’n post at a time. Metal be thy KISSaholic name and tell all the naysayers… SHAME!

What’s my favorite song on MONSTER? Which song have I played over and over and over and Rock And Roll Over again? That’s easy. Here it is:

I’m telling you right now, this song has CLASSIC ROCK oozing from it’s every crevice and the guitars are the HUGE giveaway here. For those who never thought KISS could make a song that would elevate them into the upper stratosphere of ROCK RELEVANCE… think again. With Long Way Down, KISS reached back into their CLASSIC HARD ROCK ROOTS and have delivered a very (un)KISS-like sound that somehow sounds like… KISS.

Paul Stanley sounds SUPERB on vocals while Gene Simmons, Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer sound simply invincible as musicians on this song. (Aw, hell, that pretty much sums up KISS on this whole album). Listen for yourself and maybe you’ll agree… that KISS MONSTER is 100% KICK-ASS KISSTORY.

Uh, oh. Stone gets a tad pissed off here:

It’s funny how all the BIG NAME mags and newspaper Rock critics all want to be a part of the KISS ARMY now that they’ve listened to MONSTER. Where were all these naysayers and posers since KISS Dynasty was released? KISS MY ASS is what I say to them all. KISS it baby. SSSMMMAAACCCKKK!

Okay, Stone is mellow again. Um, Kinda.

Stay tuned for some more Fun & Rockin’ Thoughts From Stone regarding MONSTER… I promise to keep the blah, blah, blah out of the mix and the constipated KISS naysayers pissed! Metal be thy name.

The word “tad” was used a couple of times in this post.
