On September 24th, New York City’s self-described “pop cock rock” unit MOTHER FEATHER will join Here Come The Mummies for a special show at the Gramercy Theatre in Manhattan. Mother Feather is the combination of the band’s two independently released recordings – 2011’s Mother Feather EP and 2013’s Living Breathing EP – plus two new songs, “Natural Disaster” and “The Power.”

Having been featured on,, and (who declared them “a great New York City band in the tradition of Great New York City Bands”), MOTHER FEATHER was also named “new band of the week” by Metal Hammer and has received much play on Daniel P. Grunge-Pop Band RAMONDA HAMMER Show Homewrecking & Heartbreak In “Goddamn Idiot” Video

LA Band Spoofs the Show “Cheaters” in New Music Video

Los Angeles, CA – Grunge-pop band Ramonda Hammer dropped the music video to their anthemic debut single, Goddamn Idiot. The video follows a bereaved woman on a reality TV show looking to catch her boyfriend, whom she believes to be unfaithful. Having acquired their name from the reality TV show Cheaters, Ramonda Hammer cleverly plays off this inspiration.

To make the video for “Goddamn Idiot”, the band teamed up with director Ariel Gardner of Dan Harmon’s comedy site, Channel 101. Front-woman, Devin Davis portrays the scorned lover seeking revenge on her unfaithful boyfriend, played by lead guitarist, Justin Geter, and his mistress, performed by bass player, Andy Hengl. Turning to a reality show to expose her cheating boyfriend, the suspecting girlfriend seeks the help of a trashy TV show hosted by drummer, Danny Louangxay. Catching her boyfriend in the act of cheating, Davis’ performance is larger than life as she satirizes the melodrama of reality TV. The show concludes with an unexpected twist of modern romance that is both hilarious and heartwarming.

Goddamn Idiot ART - Ramonda Hammer - promo single pic - 2016

“Goddamn Idiot” is an angst-ridden rock ballad that Davis explains is “about those moments when people are too afraid to do the right thing, stand up for others, take risks, or just think for themselves. Everyone’s a “goddamn idiot” sometimes, myself included.” Packed with guitar hooks drenched in reverb supporting Davis’ raw vocals, “Goddamn Idiot” is reminiscent of the best nineties alternative rock. The song is the first single off their upcoming album, Whatever That Means, due out later this year. The music video is now streaming on YouTube (or below) and the track is available for download on iTunes.

Davis formed Ramonda Hammer in the summer of 2014, but had come up with the band name as a joke years prior, after binge-watching Cheaters. When she finally decided to start the project, she met Andy Hangl who became the band’s bass player, and soon after, recruited Danny Louangxay on drums and Justin Geter on lead guitar. As a quartet, Ramonda Hammer realized their true potential, creating a sound that is familiar yet unique.

Finding inspiration in acts such as Nirvana, The Pixies, and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Ramonda Hammer is an eclectic group that combines the raw lyrics and guitar riffs of grunge with the captivating melodies of pop. Though the band’s music is rooted in nineties style, their interpretation of alternative rock is truly fresh and contemporary. Ramonda Hammer has played at legendary venues such as The Echo, The Satellite, The Viper Room, and The Smell, and they toured the west coast in the spring of 2015. Alternative Band NEW MAYANS Release Cinematic Single “Jezebel”

New Mayans - Jezebel - promo single cover art - 2015 - #MO33NSMS333993

Chicago-based Band Just Dropped Their Second Track From Upcoming Concept Album: “Odyssey”

Chicago, IL – Rock outfit, New Mayans, just released their single, Jezebel, a bat out of hell anthem with grizzly guitar licks and a head-banging beat. With a rich and diverse palette, New Mayans takes us further down the rabbit hole that provides more insight of the mad world they’ve constructed in their upcoming concept album, Odyssey, due out later next year. “Jezebel” is now available to download on Bandcamp.

Following the success of their well-received debut single, “Universe,” New Mayans shift gears away from the softer seventies synth tones into a darker arrangement of heavy distorted guitar work and hooks echoing influences of seventies and nineties alternative rock. Lead singer, Swiggy, has described his musical style as “Mad Max meets Ziggy Stardust,” which makes sense with the release of their latest single, “Jezebel.” As “Universe” painted the first stroke a cosmic world that stylistically pays homage to the art rock of David Bowie and Morrissey, “Jezebel” hones in on the hard edge of distorted electric guitars that conjure imagery of a post-apocalyptic landscape. “Jezebel” is from the perspective of an unreliable narrator. “The concept of reality is all in the mind of the observer,” Swiggy comments. “The only person who knows the truth to these questions is an exotic dancer named Jezebel.”

To capture the varying inspirations that New Mayans weave together, they recruited producer Mario J. McNulty (David Bowie, Prince, Lou Reed, Nine Inch Nails.) The menacing guitar work in “Jezebel” fits comfortably next to the chops of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, though the entire sonic landscape New Mayans creates defies comparison. “Jezebel” was recorded at The Magic Shop, known for flagship albums such as David Bowie’s secret album The Next Day, Coldplay’s Viva La Vida, and Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs.

Hailing from St. Louis, Swiggy exhibited an insatiable thirst to play music as he began learning how to play a violin at the early age of eight years old and would continue to sift through studying saxophone, guitar and piano throughout his youth. Fusing inspiration from an avant-garde pool of bands like Radiohead, David Bowie and Pink Floyd with directors like David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick and David Cronenberg, the result is the surreal aural experience that is New Mayans.

The band’s full lineup was solidified in 2014 when Swiggy began collaborating with Nathan Gilberg on bass, Earl Slick assisting in studio guitar work (David Bowie, John Lennon, Keith Richards), and Sterling Campbell on drums (David Bowie, The B-52s, Duran Duran). Swiggy has played at House of Blues-Chicago, The Pageant, Off Broadway, and The Social while sharing the stage with acts such as The Ataris, The Von Bondies, InnerPartySystem, and Nico Vega.

Playing with symbolism both religious and otherworldly, New Mayans establish a world that is truly imaginative and boundless in their music. “Jezebel” indicates they are as capable of rocking out ruthlessly as they are of crafting a sound of reflective contemplation in “Universe.” With both ends of the spectrum in mind, the possibilities fans can expect from the band’s upcoming album, Odyssey, are endless. “Jezebel” is now available on Bandcamp. To learn more about the epic narrative New Mayans assemble in their eclectic indie rock, check out!

Stone Says:

This song Jezebel by New Mayans has mesmerized me, man! I’m digging it! I’m digging it! I cannot shake it from my brain! The Jezebel vibe is freaking unreal! Yeah!!

Failure - promo band photo - #2015FRNR

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 14, 2015 – Failure, who are currently in the studio working on the follow-up to their critically acclaimed album Fantastic Planet, are giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at their progress with a new video released today in tandem with the kick off of the band’s PledgeMusic campaign (

PledgeMusic supporters will receive early access to audio clips as well as ongoing video updates from the band.  A variety of packages are available, offering mementos from the recording sessions, ranging from hand-scrawled lyrics to effects pedals and vocal mics. All pre-order bundles include the as-of-yet untitled album, which will be available in a variety of formats: digital (mp3/flac), cd, vinyl and USB drives.

Explained Ken Andrews: “Obviously we are not the first band to do this sort of thing, but I do think our fans are uniquely qualified to make this a very satisfying experience for all who participate.”

Failure returned from a 17-year hiatus in early 2014 with a riotous hometown show at the El Rey Theatre and performances at Fun Fun Fun Fest, Riot Fest, the Sunset Strip Music Festival, Cinquanta, an outing with old friends Tool, and the band’s own Tree of Stars tour.

About Failure

Failure formed in Los Angeles in the early ‘90s, releasing Comfort, their debut album, in 1992 via Slash Records.  Magnified followed in the spring of 1994 with the band’s final offering, Fantastic Planet, released in 1996.  Fantastic Planet earned a perfect 5-star score from Alternative Press with the magazine saying the album was able “to breathe life into the corpse of contemporary, guitar-driven rock,” adding that the band was “willing to stretch the definition of both their instruments and their songs.”  The 17-track album is considered one of the era’s most influential and enduring rock records.  Failure is Ken Andrews, Greg Edwards and Kellii Scott.

About PledgeMusic

PledgeMusic is the world’s leading online, direct-to-fan music community, offering artists a unique way to engage their fans in the music making experience while interacting with PledgeMusic’s global community of music fans.

Jonny Hetherington, shown above in center.

I recently asked the very talented  Jonny Hetherington (vocalist, lyricist, songwriter) of Canada’s (amazing) Hard Rock band Art Of Dying: what is the one album you cannot live without? Excluding his own music (as a requirement), this is what Jonny Hetherington had to say:

“Cool man. Pearl Jam Ten is the album I could not live without, It changed my life and influenced my musical path! The flow, the rawness, the trip that Eddie and the boys take you on never gets old for me.”

Puscifer - All Re-Mixed Up - promo cover pic

June 3, 2013, Jerome, Ariz. – Puscifer have set an Aug. 27th release date for All Re-Mixed Up, a track-for-track remix album of the band’s sophomore release Conditions of My Parole.

All Re-Mixed Up is the continuation of the Puscifer tradition to release alternate versions, reworks, and remixes of what we consider initial thoughts,” explained Maynard James Keenan.  “For instance, Carina Round was nervous about how to approach her version of ‘Telling Ghosts.’ Mat Mitchell put her at ease by asking her to think of it as a song half written, advising her to ‘now write the other half.’ It’s extremely liberating in the digital age to approach composing and creating in this manner. Infinite paths to explore, reinterpret, and re-present.”

All Re-Mixed Up Track Listing and Remixers:

1. Monsters (Deconstruct) remixed by Mat Mitchell

2. The Green Valley (Verde River Maestro 507 mix) remixed by Rani Sharone   (Stolen Babies)

3. Monsoons (JLE Motorik mix) remixed by Josh Eustis

4. Telling Ghosts (Giorgia O’Queef mix) remixed by Carina Round

5. Horizons (Dream of a Lie remix) by John Fryer (This Mortal Coil)

6. Man Overboard (11AD remix) by Alain Johannes

7. Toma (Burn Out remix) by Five Knives

8. The Rapture (JLE Needs Service mix) by Josh Eustis

9. Conditions of My Parole (F.U.B.A.R. remix) by Sir Mix-A-Lot

10. The Weaver (Virtual Vacuum remix) by Aaron Harris (PALMS)

11. Oceans (Green Mussel Mix) by Zac Rae

12. Tumbleweed (Delusions of Grandeur mix) by The Beta Machine

All Re-Mixed Up comes on the heels of an incredibly busy period for the electro-rock outfit.  The band recently released the seven-song EP Donkey Punch The Night, which features covers of Queen’sBohemian Rhapsody” (see the video here: and Accept’sBalls To The Wall” as well as new songs “Breathe” and “Dear Brother.”

Puscifer, who are known for their all-encompassing live performances that integrate a variety of on-stage props and pre-recorded video pieces, performed at Coachella 2013, and made their first international outings at Australia’s Soundwave Festival and enthralled South American crowds at Lollapalooza Brazil and Chile.

The Pretty Goodbyes – Illuminates Alternative Indie Rock On Their Debut Demo EP “Now We Run”

The Pretty Goodbyes - Now We Run - promo cover pic

THE PRETTY GOODBYES – The 3 song debut demo EP, Now We Run, from the Loughborough based 4-piece band The Pretty Goodbyes was released back on August 6th, 2012. When very, very cool Alternative/Indie Rock crosses my Rockin’ path, I’m gonna bellow about it; right here on Metal Odyssey. This unsigned UK band would be signed by me in a micro second, if I had the (prestigious) ability to do so for a (knowledgeable) record label.

This Now We Run EP has unveiled 3 songs to my senses and ALL 3 are remarkably memorable, well written and downright (gulp) fun! I always appreciate the way a talented band like The Pretty Goodbyes can coalesce the beauty of 80’s New Wave, late 80’s College Radio and Early 90’s Alternative while still maintaining a balance of Post-Punk and Modern Indie Rock/Alternative sound and vibes; all the while keeping the flames of Indie Pop to a tolerable minimum (if any). Phew! I got that off my chest!

I’m digging this band and the vocals of George Evans are nothing short of terrific. Any serious fan of Alternative and Indie Rock will embrace the music from The Pretty Goodbyes. The Pretty Goodbyes have obviously learned at a very early stage, quality songs are their ticket to success; and I see nothing less happening for this band in the future. Check out The Pretty Goodbyes right now, right here:

THE SMASHING PUMPKINS “OCEANIA” – Some Thoughts On This Significant Album

Posted in alternative rock, alternative rock albums, alternative rock bands, Music, Rock, rock albums, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , on January 13, 2013 by Metal Odyssey

The Smashing Pumpkins - Oceania - promo cover pic!

THE SMASHING PUMPKINS – I didn’t include Oceania from The Smashing Pumpkins on my 2012 Best Of Lists for Metal or Hard Rock for good reason. This 9th studio album from The Smashing Pumpkins accentuates the genius musical mind of Billy Corgan and it isn’t Metal; nor is it Hard Rock. Rock and Alternative Rock is The Smashing Pumpkins and I just didn’t compile a list of Top 10 Rock Albums for 2012… yet. I might still. Who knows?

While being in the heat of relocating my life from one state to another, writing original posts (album reviews, random blab and lists) is not entirely easy. I just had to get my thoughts out to the universe that I thoroughly enjoy Oceania; so much so, that I can easily sum up this important album by The Smashing Pumpkins in one simple word: beautiful.

If I did or was to compile a Top 10 list for Rock Albums released in 2012, Oceania would be #1.

Oceania is an album that must be heard and appreciated all the more, with the earphones on. Oceania is an album that must be heard to understand why I tag it as beautiful. The unique richness of sound and vibrant instrumentation is absolutely breathtaking. Lyrically thought-provoking is Oceania, regardless if that sounds cliché or not. Yes, Oceania does Rock like there’s no tomorrow; only this album Rocks in such a majestic way that it feels too damn special for me to overlook in writing about or acknowledging.

Sample, borrow and/or buy Oceania. Stone would never steer you wrong. Metal be thy name.

“While continuing our tradition of releasing a few new songs at a time,” explained Keenan. “I also had an itch that needed scratching, and that itch was ‘Balls To The Wall.’ Which was followed by an even harder to reach itch known as ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’  And scratch them we did.”

The collection features two new songs written by Keenan and Puscifer cohorts Mat Mitchell, Carina Round and Josh Eustis: “Breathe” and “Dear Brother” as well as two covers: Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and Accept’s “Balls To The Wall.” Donkey Punch The Night was recorded in Jerome, Ariz. in Keenan’s Caduceus Cellars ( with the same roster from 2011’s Conditions of My Parole (Keenan, Mitchell, Round, Eustis, Matt McJunkins and  Jeff Friedl) and guests Zac Rae (piano), Juliette Commagere (vocals), Josh Morreau (bass) and Claire Acey (vocals).

With Eric Dover (Slash’s Snakepit, Alice Cooper) and Chris Collier joining on, Swimming In Fire is a potent supergroup of seasoned songwriters and multi-instrumentalists to keep your ears and eyes on today and tomorrow!

Two words to know: Alternative. Experimental. Yes, Swimming In Fire are playing cutting-edge music and it’s still radiating some hard and heavy persona that Heavy Metal and Hard Rock diehards scream for. Expect the electronic gates of sound to open up and introduce you to what Greg Hampton and Danny Saber have created here with their project.

Incorporating driving guitars and melodic vocals into their songs is only just the beginning, with this creative band. There’s plenty of Alternative and Experimental nuances happening musically; this all makes the music from Swimming In Fire a true Rock ‘N Roll delicacy in the making.

I’m looking forward to hearing the eventual debut album from Swimming In Fire, these guys are onto capturing a sound that is both highly relevant and contagious. Metal be thy name.

FOOLS FOR ROWAN “Who Killed Amanda Day?” – EP Flourishes And Skyrockets With Its Melodic & Modern Rock

Posted in alternative rock, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, melodic rock, modern rock, Music, rock albums, rock bands, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on August 1, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

FOOLS FOR ROWAN – While the Modern Rock world jumps up and down for the likes of Daughtry, Shinedown, Cavo, Sick Puppies and Halestorm, (and rightfully so), there is another band that deserves the same treatment: Nashville, Tennessee’s Fools For Rowan. Here’s the slick groovy part: Fools For Rowan have even outshined their last full-length Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled. and I LOVE that album. Who Killed Amanda Day? is a whole new era for Fools For Rowan and they best strap themselves in for a high-speed Rockin’ road of continued success.

If an already seasoned and multi-talented band can maximize their songwriting and musicianship to a higher level than they were before; then Fools For Rowan is such a band. Yes, Fools For Rowan have recently opened for the legendary Evanescence, while also sharing the stage with the mega-famous Candlebox; only it’s a matter of time before Fools For Rowan will own the marquee on different shores and you’ll remember Stone told you so.

Led by the dynamic Erin Mullins on vocals, the melodic driven songs on Who Killed Amanda Day? are insanely memorable and relevant… and I’m an Extreme Metal loyalist who has been kidnapped by this band’s glowing Modern Rock tonality. Among my six favorite songs (on this 6 song EP) is Crave. Kelly Clarkson (my favorite AI winner ever) holds nothing over Erin Mullins when it comes to vocal resonance and prowess. Throughout Who Killed Amanda Day?, Erin steals the show and her band steals it right back… it’s incredible to hear.

The closing track is Leave, which has Erin dialing into some Stevie Nicks juju. A mellow and still dramatic vocal performance Erin gives on Leave. Back to Crave… Metal Odyssey’s Rock Song Of 2012? Just saying. I’m just enamored by Erin’s vocals and the band’s total musical output; for the simple reason I have never heard a hint of anything superficial from them on any of their songs… ever.

Refuge, Chameleon, and You Can’t Stop Me are Modern Rock charms that rise to the top; all three songs carrying their own flash and color of sonic appeal. The lead single, Killed A Man Today, is easily a song to narrow down as showcasing everything great about Fools For Rowan since the very beginning. There is a Rockin’ drive about this band that I hear and feel in their music which is without dispute; Killed A Man Today just solidifies this drive I’ve been hearing from Fools For Rowan.

Fools For Rowan has an ace in their box of talented tricks and it’s called Rockin’ passion. I hear it. I feel it. It flows through my veins. I’ve now told the world about it and I’m better off for it. Metal be thy name.

SPIDER ROCKETS “BITTEN” – Strap Yourself In… For One Hell Of A Hard Rockin’ Ride With Plenty Of Bite!

Posted in alternative rock, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, hard rock bands, Heavy Metal, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on June 18, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

SPIDER ROCKETS – The new studio album, Bitten, from New Jersey’s Spider Rockets was released on June 5th, 2012, via P-Dog Records. Better strap yourself in for this bevy of Hard Rockin’ songs that shoot out from Bitten! Spider Rockets have raised their own bar of musical accomplishment with their new album and it undeniably Rocks from A to Z! Admittedly, I was expecting a great Spider Rockets album with Bitten; only I wasn’t expecting a standout album of this magnitude.

After my initial listen-through of Bitten, I realized these 10 songs kicked my ass. After reality settled in and several more listens, I also realized that Bitten is one of the BEST albums I’ve listened to across ALL Rock genres thus far in 2012. Crisscrossing Heavy Metal, Alternative Rock/Metal and Hard Rock, Spider Rockets take their sound to a level of fun and excitement that I’ve always yearned for from a band. Any band. You know, like Anthrax and Misfits fun.

If your unfamiliar with Spider Rockets you absolutely must take Stone’s word here: Spider Rockets are the missing F’n link in today’s American Heavy Music. Spider Rockets sound LOUD even when the volume is down. Spider Rockets spread an infectious energy into my senses upon the opening note of Better When It’s Loud. Yes, as vocalist Helena Cos sings, it’s “better when it’s loud, it’s better when it’s fast” and I’ll confidently state: this Spider Rockets band is built-to-last!

Helena Cos illuminates the song, she has a vocal identity unlike no other female front woman I’ve heard in my 100 years of living. I state this due to the similarity factor that too often seems to come into play within the world of Rock. Helena accentuates the lyrics and sings with the confidence and attitude that any aspiring singer should emulate. Did I mention this band can play? With Bitten as proof, this band is as solid as a newly forged set of railroad spikes.

The cover of Golden Earring’s 1982 #1 hit, Twilight Zone, makes the news here. Spider Rockets spray paints more Rockin’ relevance on this (decades long) over played song… that I actually like it again! The tempo is turned up a notch and the curled-lip vibe from Helena’s vocals makes Twilight Zone a brand new and welcomed listen to my ears. If you have already heard and dug the lead single Scream (which was aired all over the internet months ago), you’re in for an enormous treat: there are songs on Bitten equal to and even better than that single!

Spider Rockets will make you move… and if you don’t move to the fist-pumping, headbanging, carefree, riff-infested, melodic, rhythm saturated, bass thumping, Alternative Hard Rock inspired style of songs on Bitten, then forget about it cause you obviously have no pulse. Album opener Going Down sets the party mood and who-gives-a-shit vibrations afire; while album closer Bring Me Around has me wishing there were 2, 3, 4 or 5 more songs to flow through my Rock ‘N Roll hungry eardrums and veins.

Seriously, Spider Rockets have declared the status quo of Hard Rock as public enemy #1 with Bitten. Collectively these songs play-out so fabulously that Bitten is an album that ends way, way, way too soon. Ring that Spider Rockets bell and tell all the people in the streets… Stone has been Bitten. And I want to get bitten again… and again. It’s now your turn to get bitten by Spider Rockets. Metal be thy name.

AVENGERS ASSEMBLE – This Soundtrack Rocks! Why? I’ll Tell You Why…

Posted in Hard Rock, hard rock bands, Heavy Metal, movie soundtracks, movies, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on June 14, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

AVENGERS ASSEMBLE SOUNDTRACK – Yes Virginia, there are movie soundtracks that Rock and Avengers Assemble is one of them. If you were unfortunate enough to have recently purchased the chicken crap Rock Of Ages soundtrack, you can toss it in the recycle bin and get your ears into a real Rock/Hard Rock soundtrack such as this one. Plus, unlike Rock Of Ages, the original artists are singing and playing on their original songs! Not one (overpaid and whining) movie actor sings on Avengers Assemble! Metal hallelujah!

Avengers Assemble is bookended by two songs that I can’t get enough of: Live To Rise (Soundgarden) and Shake The Ground (Cherri Bomb). Firstly, Soundgarden is super-duper legendary and Chris Cornell could sing Boxcar Willie songs and I would still buy it. Is Live To Rise the greatest Soundgarden song ever recorded? No. Only here’s the kicker: Live To Rise is an incredibly written and inspiring song that I cannot shake out of my head. This song’s tempo is simply perfect; Soundgarden found no need to go over the top. I guess that tells you how I feel about Soundgarden and their legacy.

Cherri Bomb. Stone is a fan. Cherri Bomb can play at my backyard barbecue on any day of the year, including snow-covered and sub-zero Winter days too. The gals of Cherri Bomb essentially put a Rock ‘N Roll exclamation point to the conclusion of this Avengers Assemble soundtrack. Just a super damn fine, melodic Hard Rockin’ song is Shake The Ground. It has shook my ground. Metal be thy name.

I admire the thinking that went into choosing the songs and artists for this soundtrack. Rock diversity is evident, with Rise Against, Five Finger Death Punch, Bush and Evanescence all appearing on one plastic CD; all with the one common goal to… Rock. This soundtrack serves to give Rock fans a taste of what each band and/or musician sounds like; in the event one is unfamiliar with an artist. Compared to last year’s Transformers: Dark Of The Moon, I find myself a bigger fan of this soundtrack, due to its song selection and overall Hard Rock vibes.

Black Veil Brides must love movie soundtracks for they have yet another installment on one, with their heavy hitting number: Unbroken. Yes, I dig Black Veil Brides. I won’t be a closet Black Veil Brides fan any longer… how’s that? The energy level and chorus that this band puts into their songs is contagious. Unbroken, like so many other Black Veil Brides songs, is very memorable and melodically heavy. Count Me Out by Pusherjones is ridiculously fun, cool and serves for a Rockin’ contagious listen to take in. Whoa. Ring that Pusherjones Rock ‘N Roll bell and tell all your stuck up neighbors they can all to go to hell!

Scott Weiland sounds brilliant on Breath. What a compelling song. Coming in at track #6, I couldn’t think of a better choice of song at the midway point of this soundtrack. Breath is sung with an emotion from Scott Weiland that I find real and makes for a repeated listen for my ears. Comeback by Redlight King and Into The Blue by Bush gives this soundtrack its muscular boosts of Modern Rock relevance; both songs are an excellent reminder to me that Rock diversity is a grand thing to cherish. (I thank the Rock Gods that ABBA and Tom Cruise aren’t on this soundtrack though).

Avengers Assemble was released on May 1st, 2012, via Hollywood Records & Marvel Music.

Even If I Could – Papa Roach

Melvins Lite “Freak Puke” – I’ve Listened. I Dig It. I Highly Recommend It. Will It Really All Matter? I Hope So…

Posted in alternative rock, experimental rock, Hard Rock, Music, rock albums, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on June 3, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

MELVINS LITE – The irrefutable legendary band known across Earth as The Melvins are Melvins Lite with their new studio album Freak Puke. This ten song offering from Melvins Lite will be released on June 5th, 2012, via Ipecac. For loyal and new fans alike, I’ve decided to list some excerpts from past press releases that sheds more “lite” on why The Melvins are Melvins Lite on Freak Puke. Here we go and enjoy:

The Melvins unveil the latest twist in their 29-year history with Melvins Lite, an additional incarnation of the band that finds founders Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover partnering with Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk) for a 10-song release titled Freak Puke.

Buzz Osborne has stated, in a prior press release:

“The Melvins have a long history of mixing up our line-ups and I think that’s what has kept us relevant for so long,” explains Osborne. “Consider the Freak Puke record the fifth side of the four-sided Melvins triangle.”

The Melvins have decided to release an album called “Freak Puke.” AND they’ve decided to call it Melvins “Lite.” It’s still the Melvins of course but the “Lite” moniker comes from the fact that they’ve recorded the entire record with the always busy and fabulously talented Trevor Dunn playing a stand up double bass and it sounds really cool! It’s new musical territory for the Melvins and it works like a charm…”

Stone says, about Freak Puke and other related stuff:

My curiosity for The Melvins came to a boil back in 1993, when Houdini was released. This was the fifth album from The Melvins, so I knew I had some catching up to do with their back catalog. Houdini did it for me and the rest is (who gives a crap) history. I’m guessing once you listen to The Melvins once, you’re sucked in by the uncanny way they make their music different.

Fast forward to 2012 and Freak Puke from Melvins Lite. Wether it’s Houdini, Freak Puke or any other album from The Melvins that’s in-between, I’ve come to the belief that The Melvins follow no musical path but their own. As I write this epic album review, that classic line from (Bill Murray) who played Tripper Harrison in the 1979 comedy film, Meatballs, comes to my mind: “It just doesn’t matter.”

What doesn’t matter Stone? Well, I’ll tell you since you’re pondering. Trying to declare what genre The Melvins or Melvins Lite belongs to… it just doesn’t matter. Caring if anyone out there gives a crap that I really dig Freak Puke… it just doesn’t matter. Telling the world that Freak Puke ranks as a high recommendation from Stone… it just doesn’t matter.

What does matter is The Melvins musical existence. This Freak Puke album from Melvins Lite doesn’t follow a flavor-of-the-month blueprint for gratitude; that slimy gratitude from the snotty hierarchy that manipulates the mainstream. From the onset, Mr. Rip Off reminds me that this band is not ripping off anyone (no pun intended). Besides, I could sit for a month of Mondays and still not be able to name another band that sounds like this. Yes, that’s a grand statement to make, especially when soundalikes are more abundant in the music world than there are synthetic additives found in one Hostess Twinkie.

For those who truly need to know, Freak Puke is a heavy album. You’ll hear heavy guitar, heavy beats and clean vocals. Eccentric vocals at times too. With that said, Freak Puke is also a listen into what’s not heavy and still comes across as… heavy. Experimental. Alternative. Heavy. Sludgy. That’s Freak Puke and yes, I did throw out some damn Rock genres after all. Then again… it just doesn’t matter.

Wait, what does matter is my persuasiveness in prompting you to buy Freak Puke. Don’t follow the robotic crowd of cheerleaders for America’s Got Talent or any other plastic Pop Culture crap on a plate, try to be different. Be very different. Melvins Lite won’t bite. Hey, that rhymed. Still, it just doesn’t matter.

Let your ears become saturated with some Melvins Lite and be introduced to Rock ‘N Roll the way it was meant to be played; Rock ‘N Roll that shoots straight from the hip, without any predetermined obligations to those Rock historian morons that push out 50 pound coffee table books and vote at The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Freak Puke, courtesy of Melvins Lite, aims and succeeds to spread some messed-up fun and madness, on a sonic ride that is an instant remedy for Rock ‘N Roll status-quo-itis.

At the end of my semi-boring day, I surely hope my blab for Melvins Lite and Freak Puke does matter. At least a little bit. Metal be thy name.
