TRIUMPH “Fight The Good Fight” – #3 In A Series Of Celebrating Peace And Hope On Metal Odyssey

Triumph - promo banner - live band - classic logo - #1

Within this week marking the anniversary of the horrific events that occurred in the U.S.A. on September 11th, 2001, I will be featuring songs of hope, love, inspiration, positive vibes and goodwill towards man. These songs will be pulled from the Hard Rock and Metal genres too. Hopefully, an attack like that will never happen again upon any country.

There currently is way too much conflict and suffering happening in the world today; our life on Earth is too short for such carnage and despair. War is not the answer and I cherish life, family, music and of course… Metal Buddies. Metal be thy name.

Below is the live music video that shows the super legendary TRIUMPH performing their classic hit Fight The Good Fight. This footage was filmed at the incredibly historical US Festival ’83, on May 29th (1983). This special day was also designated as: Heavy Metal Day. Just the name of this band, TRIUMPH, is  inspirational!

Fight The Good Fight is a timeless song about being strong, overcoming everyday obstacles and embodying personal perseverance. Lyrically, this song also reasons that more money will not rest your soul. What more can be said about this classic song being positive? Crank it up below and always remember to… Fight The Good Fight! Metal be thy name.

Fight The Good Fight is from TRIUMPH’s 1981 studio album: Allied Forces.

ROCKLAHOMA 2012 – Bands Listed! A Few Metal Thoughts…

I guess the above poster says it all. Big name bands. Up and coming bands too. It’s cool that the promoters of Rocklahoma want to “mix things up” with a wide representation of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. From what I’m seeing looking at this Rocklahoma lineup, there is something for just about every Heavy Music fan, both young and (gulp) old. No Death or Black Metal bands on this Rocklahoma bill though, what a shame.

ANTI-MORTEM is a Heavy Hittin’ and Hard Rockin’ band from Oklahoma that kicks some very serious ass. Very serious ass they kick. I’m not one for whining about whose band name is bigger on any F’n festival poster, yet MEGADETH should have their name up at the top. I imagine the same can be said for SLASH and QUEENSRYCHE too. Metal be thy name.

GARY MOORE – ‘Live At Montreux 2010’ A Celebrative Listen Of A Late, Great Guitar Legend

Posted in classic rock, concerts, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, rock festivals, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on February 16, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

GARY MOORELive At Montreaux 2010 was released back on September 20th, 2011, via Eagle Records. The legendary Gary Moore had performed at the 44th Montreux Jazz Festival back in 2010. The Festival dates were July 2nd through July 17th of that year. This world-famous festival also showcased the following diverse lineup of bands in 2010: Simply Red, Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Norah Jones, Roxy Music, Mark Knopfler, Tori Amos, Herbie Hancock, Joe Bonamassa and Missy Elliott (to name a several few).

Seven months to the day, after this Montreux performance, Gary Moore passed away from a heart attack. February 6th, 2011 was a very sad day for music indeed. I remember my first time listening to a Gary Moore album in its entirety and it was 1984’s Victims Of The Future. When I first saw Gary Moore in the music video for Shapes Of Things, I was hooked. I thought to myself so long ago… this dude is not acting, this dude is real.

As the Gary Moore discography of Blues piled-up, I regretfully didn’t keep up. Over the years, my habitual leanings towards the “heavy stuff” and being broke time and again seemed to detour my buying habits. It’s okay though, at least I have a Gary Moore want list that I can enjoy filling and exploring still. Plus I’ve held onto Still Got The Blues on cassette after all these years!

Recently, I came across this live Gary Moore CD at Best Buy. I knew I wasn’t leaving the store without it. The whole reality of Gary Moore passing away hit me as well once again, as I held onto this CD. I wasn’t going to be a turd and pass over fine wine for a beer on this shopping trip for music. Not this time. Honestly, this CD surprised the daylights out of me for the track listing screamed of the Hard Rock side of Gary Moore’s late 80’s career. I felt like time froze as I approached the check-out at Best Buy. Really.

As I drove home with this newly purchased Gary Moore CD playing, it felt so right. It also felt so grand to hear Gary Moore playing his harder stuff live too. Odd as it sounds, yet, Gary Moore was alive once again through his music and I just became lost in the midst of these live songs. Gary Moore played three brand new songs at this Montreux Festival and they are included on this album. The new songs are: Days Of Heroes, Where Are You Now and Oh Wild One.

All three new songs that Gary Moore and his band performed are sensational to say the least. Days Of Heroes is vintage Hard Rockin’ Gary Moore. Where Are You Now can be considered a ballad due to its tempo, still, Gary Moore lays his guitar parts and solo down with an exquisite touch, giving this song a Rockin’ edge that is difficult to shake from my brain. The Wild Frontier and After The War days are summoned up by Gary Moore in dazzling fashion, with Oh Wild One. Man, is this a melodic Hard Rock song that became instantly imbedded in my head! Whoa.

The entire band that Gary Moore assembled for this 2010 tour and Montreux performance are seasoned pros (see band lineup below). Honestly, they played damn tight together during this performance and its damn right refreshing to hear such a level of quality from them. Gary Moore just downright shines vocally and (of course) on guitar throughout each song. This live production never comes across as being “tinkered with”, it’s as live as it gets to my senses.

There are guitar legends and then there are those guitar legends that play with such emotion, that their guitar tones come across as vocals to me. Gary Moore was/will forever remain one of those guitar legends for my senses. Just listen to Blood Of Emeralds and So Far Away/Empty Rooms and hopefully you’ll understand what I mean.  A mammoth of a song is Blood Of Emeralds, so fully enriched with Gary Moore’s guitar playing and it simply moves me.

Please pardon my lengthy review for this live gem, only this Gary Moore album I could write about for another 50,000 words or so. However, I will come to a close by saying this is a live Gary Moore album that I’ll cherish for the rest of my life. I never had an opportunity to see Gary Moore live so this is as close as it gets. It’s amazing how music can change your mood for the better. Gary Moore Live At Montreux 2010 just elevates my spirits and reminds me once again, that what I was hearing way back in 1984 was real after all… and that was the guitar of Gary Moore.

The Band:

Gary Moore – vocals, guitar

Neil Carter – keyboards, vocals, guitar

Jon Noyce – bass

Darrin Mooney – drums

Gary Moore Live At Montreaux 2010 – Track Listing:

Over The Hills And Far Away

Military Man

Days Of Heroes

Where Are You Now

So Far Away/Empty Rooms

Oh Wild One

Blood Of Emeralds

Out In The Fields

Walking By Myself

Parisienne Walkways

Rest In Peace, Gary Moore.

Cleveland Horrorcore Giant MARGIN OF ERROR Confirmed To Play DIRTFEST!

Cleveland Horrorcore giant MARGIN OF ERROR has been confirmed to play the annual DIRTFEST on August 13 in Birch Run, MI @ Birch Run Expo Center. Also playing DIRTFEST are All That Remains, Alien Ant Farm, Times Of Grace, Silverstein, Egypt Central, among many others.

MARGIN OF ERROR will be playing on the Party Armour Stage at 2:00 EST.  Make sure you check out the band’s incredibly tight onslaught of extreme Horrorcore. Be there and be square!  The band also recently released quite the controversial music video for their banger “Your Life In Playback”.

You can find more info on DIRTFEST here: http://www.dirtfest.com

In addition, KILLER TOURS will be sponsoring DIRTFEST, and are giving away a pair of DIRTFEST tickets to 1 (one) lucky winner.  You must have aKILLER TOURS account to enter: http://www.killertours.com/contests/

DIRTFEST started in 1997 as an outlet for promoters Matt Dalton and Kurt Gust to showcase their bands at the time. Locals would refer to Birch Run as “Dirt Run” since there was little more to do than play in the dirt of the small town. Each year, Dalton expanded the DIRTFEST and eventually the festival became big enough to host national acts as Four Year Strong, Silverstein, Every Time I Die, Mayday Parade, and The Black Dahlia Murder to play alongside the many local Michigan bands.

This year DIRTFEST expands on that idea by once again including local and national metal acts, and also bringing hard rock bands into the mix as well. DIRTFEST 2011 will return to The Birch Run Expo Center and takes place August 13th.

SCORPIONS AT M3 ROCK FESTIVAL 2010 – THANK YOU SCORPS!!

Posted in Hard Rock, hard rock bands, hard rock music, Heavy Metal, heavy metal bands, heavy metal festivals, heavy metal history, heavy metal music, heavy metal news, metal odyssey, Music, rock & roll, rock 'n' roll, rock music with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 27, 2010 by Metal Odyssey

SCORPIONS – Last Saturday, June 19, 2010, I and Best Metal Buddy Scott Coverdale watched, sang along to and jumped for Metal joy as the ultra legendary Scorpions performed as the headliner, closing out a memorable day of Hard & Heavy Rock ‘N’ Roll, at the 2010 M3 Rock Festival in Columbia Maryland. Never once did I really dwell about the fact, that this is the Scorpions farewell tour. How could I? The Scorpions, for as long as they were on stage that night, made me feel as though the world around me was in unison with the Metal euphoria that I was experiencing. Sound sappy? Not to me… this was the Scorpions and I was finally seeing them, hearing them and experiencing their songs LIVE. O.k., I did dwell a little.

The Zoo and Big City Nights were two songs the Scorpions played at M3 that I shall never forget. Just the thunderous power from Paweł Mąciwoda’s bass and James Kottak’s drums as The Zoo began it’s Heavy Metal stomp, was an exhilarating feeling and sound to envelope my mind and ears! The power, the excitement, the LOUD Heavy Metal that exploded around me from this Scorpions performance is what I was anticipating and wishing for, weeks leading up to this M3 Rock Festival. To say I felt like a teenager again is an understatement. I did. So be it. It’s not a crime to feel so damn good from the music I am hearing, from a band I revere so highly, in an outdoor live setting like M3. Metal be thy name.

I don’t think I have ever, in my Metal life, sung along to Big City Nights as loud as I did that night at M3. Riveting. My body felt as if I was picked up and given wings to fly, while Big City Nights was being played by the Scorpions. After all these years, of listening to such incredibly classic songs like Blackout, I am finally seeing Klaus Meine on vocals with Rudolf Schenker and Matthias Jabs on guitars… owning the stage. Klaus Meine explained his voice was a tad under the weather, in response to a fan close to the stage wanting him to sing louder. Klaus Meine explained to the thousands of fans that he was – “singing straight from the heart”. Yes, you were Klaus. I and Scott Coverdale were loud and proud lawn creatures for this M3 Rock Festival… and we both heard the great Klaus Meine just fine. Thank you Klaus Meine for giving it all you had that night… I’ll never forget hearing your voice sing live.

I have been ecstatic, blown away and wowed by the new Scorpions album – Sting In The Tail since it’s release day. Hearing the Scorpions play Raised On Rock… live… gave me more ostrich bumps up and down my arms than ever before, in my entire Metal life. If a song is so grand, so personally emotional to me, I can easily be driven to happy tears. Hearing Raised On Rock, played live by the Scorpions that M3 evening, brought me to those happy tears. Sound Sappy? Not to me… this was the Scorpions… F’n live.

Each time a song ended, Klaus Meine would thank the thousands of screaming Scorpions fans. Scott Coverdale still kids me now… and will never, ever, cease to kid me… that I shouted right back – “No, thank you Klaus”!! I could not help myself, I needed to thank Klaus Meine and the Scorpions for all the wonderful moments I spent alone as a teen… listening to their albums and songs for inspiration. Inspiration to get through another grueling day of high school. I was thanking this iconic band for all those wonderful moments, where I partied till dawn with their albums being played… Blackout, Animal Magnetism, In Trance, Savage Amusement and Love At First Sting… just to name more than a few. I was shouting back my “thank you’s” for being a band that my ten year old twin daughters and Rockin’ great wife think are the greatest too.

Seeing, hearing and being a part of the Scorpions live performance at the 2010 M3 Rock Festival was much more about the music, it was about saying goodbye. Saying goodbye to an old, good friend. Saying goodbye to knowing this important and Rock historic band, shall may never get near my neck of the woods again for a concert. Saying goodbye to knowing in three years, it’s over for the Scorpions as a band. Still, in my Metal heart, this night at M3 felt more like a celebration to me. A night to personally celebrate a live performance of the Scorpions and really feel their songs go through me.

I met and talked to a real cool dude this night at M3, he sat in a folding chair next to me on the lawn. A middle aged dude, very friendly and a knowledgeable Scorpions fan. A very loyal Scorpions fan too. You see, this dude checked himself out of a hospital, just before a major operation, with multiple fractures in his hip, just to see his favorite band play live… and bid farewell to them as well. I could see the pain in this dude’s face, yet the Scorpions made him feel no real pain that night… he stood up for the last two songs of their set with some help of his friends… and he sang along with his fists pumping in the air.

When the Scorpions finished their set, with the encore performance of Rock You Like A Hurricane, the celebration was nearing an end and reality began to set in. I fist pumped into the air, sang the lyrics to this ultra memorable song very loudly and felt my body jumping up and down… without my control. This is what Rock ‘N’ Roll is about. This is what the Scorpions are all about. This… is what a band that has meant so much to me, made me feel like that night at M3.

As Scott Coverdale and I made our long trek back to his air conditioned SUV, I felt both exhausted and wired, inspired and very hungry.  Walking amongst the enormous crowd, I heard many fans speak of the Scorpions performance. Sure, there were plenty of fans wanting “their song” to be played that wasn’t. Not hearing “a certain Scorpions song” was never an issue for me that night at M3. This night was NOT the time to squabble about petty stuff like that. No sir. Just knowing I have a lifetime memory of seeing the Scorpions live on their farewell tour, seeing them play their hearts out on stage for us fans… that is what it’s really all about.

THANK YOU SCORPIONS, FOR A MEMORY OF A METAL LIFETIME.

I’ll miss ya’ Scorps.

M3 ROCK FESTIVAL 2010 PART I: THE STATE OF HEAVY MUSIC ACCORDING TO STONE

M3 ROCK FESTIVAL 2010 – As I was a part of the many thousands of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal fans at this year’s M3 Rock Festival in Columbia, Maryland this past Saturday, I came upon a realization… that Heavy Music is alive and very F’n well in 2010. Fans from teens to Old School Metalheads were in attendance at this Heavy Music event and they were not at all bashful at letting their excitement be seen or heard. The excitement for music that moves them, grooves them and makes them all feel like one gigantic and united family. Music, regardless of genre, should and most often does, ignite and bring out the emotions in all of us. How thrilling and satisfying it was, to witness thousands of Heavy Music fans at the M3 Rock Festival, celebrating together, (very peacefully too I might add), some of the greatest songs and bands that time has not forgotten.

We are a rowdy and straight forward bunch, us Heavy Music fans. Yet our rowdiness comes with jubilant horns raised in the air, a handshake, a high five or a slap on the back to our fellow fan. While I was amongst the massive M3 Rock Festival crowd on June 19th, I shared stories, anecdotes and countless quips with what I thought were strangers. After a couple of days have passed since this memorable day in my Metal life, I’ve come to the realization… that these strangers were never really strangers at all. They were passionate and loyal Heavy Music fans, just like myself. We were all family on June 19th, at the M3 Rock Festival. A proud, loud, loyal and raucous family at that.

We all live during a time of war, economic instability and political mud slinging that engulfs the headline news each and every moment. For one day, thousands of Heavy Music fans along with more than a dozen bands and countless vendors, created a world where politicians could never bullshit with or dare enter without running away with their heads caught between their legs. A world where spending eight dollars on a cold beer brought a smile to my face. A world where thousands of us could escape to, away from the crap that our cable network news shoves down our throats continuously. A world where us Heavy Music fans proved once again to society, we did not come to conquer, burn and pillage a community that accepted us in. God Bless the world of Heavy Music and Columbia, Maryland.

As days, weeks and years shall go by, I’ll never forget this 2010 M3 Rock Festival. I shall never forget the bands I Rocked to, the evil humidity that enveloped the air, the beer that went down like candy water and my fellow Heavy Music fans as well. I was truly in my element at the 2010 M3 Rock Festival and so too were thousands of other fellow fans. The state of Heavy Music has never been more defiant, loud and resilient… the 2010 M3 Rock Festival proved this to me, both bands and fans. We are really one big happy and Heavy Music lovin’ family. Metal be thy name.

I will be writing a series of posts that feature this 2010 M3 Rock Festival in the days and most likely, weeks to come. There are many stories to still tell, from the bands to the vendors that made this day ROCK… for me.

CINDERELLA – A METAL SPOTLIGHT ON THE M3 ROCK FESTIVAL 2010!

CINDERELLA – Since their 1986 debut album – Night Songs, I have been a fan of Cinderella. Be it Rock, Hard Rock, Hair Metal or good ol’ Heavy Metal… Cinderella can play it extremely well and with a classy touch of the Blues. Cinderella is slated for performing at the 2010 M3 Rock Festival, in Columbia, Maryland, on June 19th. Their set time is from 7:40 – 8:40 pm on the Pavilion Stage. They are the last band on the Pavilion Stage to perform before… the ultra legendary Scorpions headline and close out the night!!! I’M THERE! I literally am counting down the hours to this cool festival of Hard Rock ‘N’ Roll and so is my Best Metal Buddy… Scott Coverdale. This will be the third time I will have seen Cinderella live and it has been quite a few years since I’ve seen them last.

To pick my favorite Cinderella album, (there are four studio albums in all), is really not that easy. Metal truth be told, each Cinderella album is uniquely great, in it’s total Rockin’ totality. There is that one Cinderella album, however, that I turn to more often to listen to… Heartbreak Station from 1990. Bluesy, Hard Hittin’, American Rock ‘N’ Roll at it’s finest is the best way to sum up Heartbreak Station. My favorite song from this album is Shelter Me. Man, if there ever was a song that justifies why Cinderella is as genuine as a freshly minted and non-circulated, gold dollar coin… it’s this one. The lyrics of Shelter Me resonate with strong relevance, a song that can surely be adapted to today’s nightly news bull crap. Plus, Cinderella took a fine swipe at the censorship machine known as the PMRC within the lyrics of Shelter Me as well, which makes me very proud as a fan.

The More Things Change is another example of lyrical relevance, coupled with Bluesy Hard Rock excellence. This song opens up Heartbreak Station and truly signaled that Cinderella was more than just merely an inappropriately tagged – Hair Metal Band. For anyone to pigeonhole Cinderella into just the Hair Metal genre is nonsensical… this is an American Rock ‘N’ Roll Band that has proven their Rock diversity through four studio albums, the proof is in their music. Throw in a clear fact that Cinderella has not released a studio album since 1994’s Still Climbing, all the while maintaining a level of popularity that puts them second to the Scorpions on the M3 Rock Festival bill and the word impressive comes to mind.

Cinderella is a perfect example of quality and talent over quantity… their four studio albums hold up against the sands of time. The songs on these Cinderella albums are not just fad infused… these songs were and still are Hard Rockin’ genius. The word relevance keeps popping up as I write this, only it is so applicable to Cinderella. One of the items on my Metal wish list, is for Cinderella to make another studio album sometime soon. Then again, I’m just psyched this great band is still around and still touring, affording me the opportunity to see them live once again at M3!
