A Personal Message From KIX

Hello friends! Jimmy here! As you all know, I’ve had some health issues in the last few months. I’ve been working hard to get back into playing shape, but unfortunately I’ve had a couple setbacks in the last few weeks. With the support of my wife Cathy, my KIX bandmates and crew, and all of our friends and fans, I will continue working to return to Rock Your Face Off to the best of my ability. But I’m not there yet.

I’ve come to the realization that I will not be able to return to the stage as soon as I was hoping. I’ve been discussing with my wife and bandmates all the different scenarios for KIX to get back to playing for our fans again. We’ve all thought long and hard about it and have decided it is best to go forward with someone to fill in for me until I can return. We are very fortunate to have found someone who I think is the best possible choice for us.

Please show your love and support to Matt Starr as we welcome him into the KIX camp. He is an amazing drummer/vocalist who has played with many top artists, notably Ace Frehley and Mr. Big. I am humbled and honored that he has agreed to help us out and I welcome him with open arms. As of now, Matt will be playing all the KIX shows until further notice. Please show your support of the band, and Matt, until I can make my return. See you soon! -Jimmy

KIX CELEBRATES 35-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE 1985 ALBUM, MIDNITE DYNAMITE, WITH THE RELEASE OF MIDNITE DYNAMITE RE-LIT

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Music, music news, news, rock music, rock music news, world news with tags , , , , , , on November 18, 2020 by Metal Odyssey

RE-MIXED & RE-MASTERED VERSION OF MIDNITE DYNAMITE

OUT NOVEMBER 20, 2020

NEW YORK, NY (November – 2020) In a year full of bad news, KIX is excited to bring some good news to their fans. On the 35th anniversary of the release of Midnite Dynamite, Maryland hard rock icons, KIX will release Midnite Dynamite Re-Lit (track listing below), on November 20, 2020. For Midnite Dynamite Re-Lit, KIX partnered with long-time collaborator and the album’s original producer, Beau Hill (Alice Cooper, Ratt, Warrant, KIX), for a blistering update of the fan-favorite album. Midnite Dynamite Re-Lit is available for pre-order now on the band’s webstore where fans can also purchase special commemorative merchandise including T-shirts, hoodies, keychains, and more.

KIX’s third album of their career, originally released October 7, 1985, Midnite Dynamite reflected the band’s true essence, as the popular musical landscape of the mid 80’s had shifted in their favor. From the slash-and-burn riffing of the album’s title track and the high-speed antics of “Layin’ Rubber,” to the Aerosmith flavored groove of numbers like “Cold Shower” and “Sex,” to the heart-break melancholia of the album’s sole ballad, “Walkin’ Away,” Midnite Dynamite is packed with material that delivers not only attitude in spades, but also pummels the listener with hook after hook.

Thirty-five years after its initial release, Midnite Dynamite remains a fan and band favorite, and Hill (who also remixed KIX’s hit album Blow My Fuse to mark its 30th anniversary in 2018) relished the opportunity to return to the original 1985 multi-track tapes.

About the new mix, Hill says, “The guitars don’t have as much schmutz on them as the original, and Steve’s vocal just jumps off the page now without all the bulls**t that I was putting on it then. I guess that’s what happens when you mix and produce for an additional 35 years.”

“Back in the 80s, everything had way too much echo, way too much reverb,” recalls vocalist Steve Whiteman. “It was so muddy that sometimes you would lose some really dynamic performances. Beau cleaned all that up on the Blow My Fuse re-release, and he’s doing the same thing on Midnite Dynamite, so it sounds incredible.”

Midnite Dynamite Re-Lit also includes original demo recordings for seven out of the ten songs, plus one early album mix of the song, “Walking Away.”  “We chose to include a demo disc, like Fuse 30 Reblown, even though we were missing two songs,” says bassist Mark Schenker. “Nobody had a copy on either cassette or two track stereo quarter-inch tape. I searched high and low and couldn’t find the demos of ‘Scarlet Fever,’ or ‘Bang Bang.’”

In 2014, KIX released their seventh full-length album, Rock Your Face Off (Loud & Proud Records) their first studio effort since 1995’s Show Business. The album debuted at #1 on Amazon’s “Hard Rock and Metal “chart, in the Top 50 on Billboard’s “Top 200 Albums” chart, #5 on the “Independent Albums “chart, #11 on the “Top Internet “chart, #17 on the “Top Rock Albums” chart, #27 on the “Indie/Small Chain Core Stores” chart and #33 on the “Physical” chart.

KIX last released Can’t Stop The Show: The Return Of KIX on October 21, 2016, a two-disc DVD/CD set that entered the Billboard Top Music Video Sales chart at #3, and rose to the #1 position, the band’s highest charting debut and first #1 ever in their 35-year history.  The 71-minute film offered an in-depth look into KIX’s decision to record their first new album, 2014’s Rock Your Face Off, in almost 20 years.

In 2018, KIX celebrated the 30th Anniversary of their biggest album, Blow My Fuse, with Blow My Fuse Re-Blown, a two-disc set with a remixed/remastered version of the album, along with the original demo recordings for all 10 songs. The reunion with Beau Hill for this remix sparked the initiative to revisit Midnite Dynamite and take a similar approach to updating KIX’s legacy.

KIX will hit the road in 2021 playing select deep cuts from the album Midnite Dynamite to celebrate the release of Midnite Dynamite Re-Lit. All tour dates can be found on the band’s website.

NEW YORK, NY (SEPTEMBER – 2016) – Platinum-selling Maryland Hard Rock icons, KIX will release CAN’T STOP THE SHOW: THE RETURN OF KIX, a two-disc DVD/CD set, October 21, 2016 on Loud & Proud Records.  The 71-minute film is an in-depth look into KIX’s decision to record their first new album, 2014’s Rock Your Face Off, in almost 20 years.

The DVD – WATCH THE TRAILER HERE or below – also features the making of the album from bassist Mark Schenker’s studio, interviews with the band as well as notable rock artists such as Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme, Lzzy Hale of Halestorm, Jeff LaBar of Cinderella, Share Ross of Vixen, Shannon Larkin of Godsmack, and more, key music industry veterans such as radio personality Eddie Trunk, Don Jamieson of That Metal Show on VH1 Classic as well as Luc Carl and Keith Roth of Sirius/XM.  It also includes a rare appearance by producer Taylor Rhodes (Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, KIX’s Hot Wire).

The CD, CAN’T STOP THE SHOW (LIVE) offers never-before-released live KIX tracks recorded over the last three years.  A bonus KIX logo sticker is inside the first manufacturing run, a special treat for KIX fans around the world, and each band member offers his own special contribution to the package’s booklet including vocalist Steve Whiteman’s rigorous exercise routine, cartoons by guitarist Brian “Damage” Forsythe, an essay by bassist Mark Schenker, a gear rundown by guitarist Ronnie “10/10” Younkins and a favorite recipe from drummer Jimmy Chalfant, aka “Chef Chocolate.”

kix-a-documentary-promo-cover-pic-2016-33moilmf733

“KIX is proud of the band’s legacy, but equally proud of our new chapter,” says Schenker. “We had an opportunity to work with some great film makers, so we just let the cameras roll everywhere, and had so much fun putting the project together. There was a true outpouring of love and admiration from our fans and our peers after the release of Rock Your Face Off and luckily, we had documented the recording sessions on film. Now we are excited to share the process of making the new album with our loyal fans.  KIX thanks everyone involved and hopes everyone loves it as much as we loved making it!”

In 2014, KIX released their seventh full-length album, Rock Your Face Off (Loud & Proud Records) their first studio effort since 1995’s Show Business. The album debuted at #1 on Amazon’s “Hard Rock and Metal “chart, in the Top 50 on Billboard’s “Top 200 Albums” chart, #5 on the “Independent Albums “chart, #11 on the “Top Internet “chart, #17 on the “Top Rock Albums” chart, #27 on the “Indy/Small Chain Core Stores” chart and #33 on the “Physical” chart.  It also garnered rave reviews from publications such as Stereogum who said, “KIX have made an album with all the spirit and joy and craftsmanship that they always brought, an album with a hooks-per-minute ratio enough to grab you even if you never heard of them before reading this review.  The band plays with a sense of rhythmic push-pull that reminds you that people used to dance to this stuff, and that they still could, if they were so inclined…Its mere existence is an inspirational thing, and it’s a reminder that sometimes exploring new musical space isn’t the most important thing. Sometimes, songs are the most important thing.”

KIX will be performing select shows for the rest of the year, including a home town release event show in Baltimore, MD at Rams Head Live on September 24.  All tour dates can be found on the band’s website HERE. Pre-order CAN’T STOP THE SHOW: THE RETURN OF KIX through Amazon HERE.

Some Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts – Sunday July 27th, 2014

KIX - Rock Your Face Off - promo cover pic - 2014

It is Sunday, July 27th, 2014 and after 11:00 pm EST as I write this post. Other than wishing the team members on the Animal Planet reality series Finding Bigfoot would at last find this damn creature, wishing for world peace is probably just as moot. What isn’t uncertain are two forthcoming Hard Rock albums that I’m gonna scrape up some spare change to purchase: KIX – Rock Your Face Off and SKID ROW – Rise Of The Damnation Army/United World Rebellion Chapter Two.

Rock ‘N Roll was, is and will forever be a perfect antidote for dispelling the crappy feelings I get when reading the world AND local news! Metal be thy name, isn’t it true for you!? I truly feel it is GRAND that SKID ROW and KIX are both releasing new studio material on the same day in the USA: August 5th! This will be the second in a series of EP studio releases from SKID ROW, with KIX releasing their first studio album since 1995’s Show Business. However, KIX has been a staple and favorite on the live Hard Rock scene for many a year; their 2012 Live In Baltimore release via Frontiers Records is proof positive of this!

Both bands are legendary for sure. I am just psyched-out that SKID ROW and KIX exist in 2014, while giving their fans and the Hard Rock scene something to really look forward to once again. SKID ROW. KIX. Real Deal Hard Rock. Metal be thy name. – Stone.

KIX – SIGNS WITH LOUD & PROUD RECORDS; FIRST NEW ALBUM IN 19 YEARS CURRENTLY IN THE WORKS AND SET FOR JULY 22nd RELEASE

Look for KIXSteve Whiteman (lead vocals), Jimmy Chalfant (drums, vocals), Ronnie Younkins (guitars), Brian Forsythe (guitars) and Mark Schenker (bass)—to release their first new album in almost two decades on July 22, thanks to their new partnership with Loud & Proud Records. What makes the project even more exciting and anticipated is that the album features the band’s original line-up, with the exception of Schenker on bass.

“The boys and I are so happy that our old friend, Tom Lipsky, has invited us to join the Loud & Proud family,” exclaims Whiteman. “We worked with Tom and Madelyn Scarpulla on our last studio album, SHOW BUSINESS, and we’re looking forward to working with them again with the release of the first new KIX album in almost 19 years! We’ll still be coming to a dump near you very soon!”

Loud & Proud Owner & President Tom Lipsky adds, “What I have always loved about KIX is they make rock ‘n roll fun. What I love about their new music is that it’s pure, genuine KIX music, straight up guitar rock with no compromise. They’re not chasing trends or trying to re-invent themselves. They’re simply doing what they do best…and now they can do it Loud and Proud!”

KIX - Logo - neon green - 2014 - #33038

Marking the re-emergence of KIX in early-2000’s, the band had teamed up a few times a year to test the waters with reunion shows in Maryland/Pennsylvania, which were very well received. Then in the summer of 2008, KIX performed outside the mid-Atlantic for the first time in 13 years at two of the biggest rock festivals in the U.S. Rocklahoma in Pryor, OK and Rock the Bayou in Houston, TX. The band was hailed by many music websites and attendees as “Best Performance” at both festivals, where they played alongside Sammy Hagar, Alice Cooper, Tesla, Queesryche, Ratt, and more.

As the demand for new music has never subsided and in fact has only increased over the last few years, the band decided that they can no longer ignore the overtures from their fans and are currently recording new KIX songs. The new album, due out summer 2014, is produced by Taylor Rhodes, who last worked with KIX on 1991’s HOT WIRE album. Rhodes has also written hit songs for Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne and Journey.

Stay tuned for new album news, which will be announced in the coming weeks, and check out KIX on tour at any of the following stops (with more to be announced soon):

Sat 5/24 – Pryor, OK @ Rocklahoma

Wanna See 7 Cassette Singles Of Mine? They’re Really Cool. Metallica, KIX, Queen, Aerosmith, Slaughter…

Posted in classic rock, classic rock bands, Hard Rock, hard rock bands, Heavy Metal, Metal, metal music, Music, news, rock music, rock music news, world news with tags , , , , , , , on December 29, 2013 by Metal Odyssey

Check ’em out above! Those are 7 cassette singles that I recently dug out of my collection. There’s KIX, Queen, Aerosmith, Slaughter, Metallica and Queensrÿche! Whoa! I have many more cassette singles; I’ll show and tell more of ’em in the future. Honestly, I will.

Before there was the compressed MP3 revolution, there were 45 rpm’s and eventually cassette singles. These (now) analog relics gave me and countless others, a quick fix for an inexpensive Rock ‘N Metal high, back in the day. My cassette collection has continued to survive over the decades and I’m thankful for that.

Regardless of the digital world we live in, I’ll still dig through my cassettes and listen to whatever catches my mood at the moment. I’ll always have a stash of cool cassettes put aside for listening to in my (2000) Ford Taurus and “combo” stereo in the house. Metal be thy name.

Here are what the back covers of these 7 cassette singles looks like:

Thanks a Metal ton for stopping by and looking! You ROCK for doing so! Whoa.

KIX ‘Live In Baltimore’ – No Fillers, No Artificial Flavors… Just KIX Playing Some (Kick Ass) Live & Heavy Rock ‘N Roll!

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, live rock albums, Music, rock concerts, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on September 29, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

KIX – There are hundreds of famous bands still bringing it from the dazzling, loud, trendsetting, colorful and arena-filled decade known as the 80’s. That decade also boasts some incredibly loyal Hard Rock and Heavy Metal fans. I am proud of my growing up as a teen during that brilliant decade of excessive Rock heaviness, glitz, glam and Metal toxicity. One band from the 80’s that has triumphantly returned and kept their Hard Rock adrenaline on a full-on-high is Hagerstown, Maryland’s KIX.

During the 80’s, KIX released four (charting) albums that spilled over with Hard Rock goodness, courtesy of KIX’s guitar driven, bass thumping, drum pounding, memorable songs; with lyrics sung by the flamboyant Steve Whiteman that motivated so many of us to sing along to, during an any occasion keg party or get together with the pack. KIX was a significant puzzle piece to that decade of Heavy Music decadence and now you can hear for yourself with Live In Baltimore as to why this is righteously so. (KIX would later release 2 more studio albums that charted in the early 90’s).

If you’ve never had a chance to see KIX play live, this album is the second-best thing; Live In Baltimore is your invitation to shed away any moral cobwebs that have kidnapped your thoughts and dreams about good-times Rock ‘N Roll. The 16 plus minutes of Yeah, Yeah, Yeah is a live KIX staple and never fails to remind me that Rock ‘N Roll was supposed to be (gulp) fun to begin with. Make that F’n fun. Steve Whiteman never disappoints my Rockin’ funny bone with his chatter on Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, regardless of how many times I hear it.

Cold Blood will crank-up my adrenaline for eternity, a song that can easily transform a crappy mood I’m in… into one of Hard Rock jubilation. Again, Steve Whiteman makes this live version of Cold Blood 200% better, just from his interaction with the happily screaming fans. Don’t Close Your Eyes is timeless for me, with the emotion that spills over from both its lyrics and music. If you play this power ballad with your #1 gal, she’s guaranteed to get all mushy in your arms. If this song doesn’t have that sort of affect I just described, then your #1 gal is a mannequin.

From start-to-finish, KIX undeniably kicks some heavy Rock ‘N Roll ass on this Live In Baltimore album. KIX will make you move, laugh and sing aloud like you’re supposed to do while listening to live, energy-charged, heavy Rock ‘N Roll. KIX turned me into a fan of their stuff many, many years ago. When I (finally) saw KIX live back in 2010, I experienced why I was a fan of this band for so long. With Live In Baltimore, I can constantly revisit and refresh my KIXaholic enthusiasm. Buy this live KIX album. It will serve you right. Metal be thy name.
