GOATWHORE – Announces US Live Dates Surrounding Ozzfest Appearance This Fall

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, news, rock music, world news with tags , , , , on July 21, 2016 by Metal Odyssey

Goatwhore - tour promo flyer - September - 2016 - #MO99663ILMFSO

New Orleans’ road warriors GOATWHORE will return to the US tour circuit this Fall on a short run of live abrasions prior to and following their Ozzfest appearance in San Bernardino, California on September 24th. The trek will commence on September 16th and rupture fifteen stages through October 1st. Support will be provided by The Blood Royale on select dates. GOATWHORE‘s latest US journey will follow a two-week stretch of European onstage debauchery set to kick off next month.

Comments GOATWHORE frontman Ben Falgoust: “We have been associated with Ozzfest in the past and are grateful to be playing it this year, but being part of Black Sabbath’s final West Coast show is another legendary experience to be affiliated with and be able to witness first hand, taking in every element of a band that has been a great influence on all levels in the metal world. Also, Ozzfest has given opportunities to countless freshly emerging metal acts to forge new paths and give people new levels of extreme music to connect with and hear… that doesn’t exclude this year. Tons of acts that have been pretty damn strong in the underground metal community will be making their first appearances at Ozzfest Meets Knotfest, as well as repeat acts that have been a part of it in the past. So, when you come to see Black Sabbath out West for their last time, come early and be a part of the future of metal, as well as its legendary past.”

Adds drummer Zack Simmons: “We are very honored to be a part of Black Sabbath’s last ever California performance and Ozzfest’s 20th Anniversary. It’ll be a ripping day of heavy metal and a bittersweet farewell to the godfathers of the genre.”

COUNTLESS SKIES – S/T EP – A Metal Odyssey Album Review

3.5 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

Metal Fists - 3.5 - Metal Odyssey

COUNTLESS SKIES – This debut and self-titled EP from Hertfordshire, England’s Countless Skies was released back on November 7th of 2014. A self-released EP, Countless Skies does not hold back on creating a crisp production of layered Melodic Death Metal.

The Death Metal vocals of guitarist Ross King and clean vocals of bassist Phil Romeo work well together on this EP and compliment the overall somber atmosphere and vibes that I hear and feel. Then again, there are a good many musical moments within these songs that metamorphosis to a more neutral mood, moments which I can interpret as jubilation trying to fend off a sonic wall of melancholy; if that makes any sense. Countless Skies plays out as a mellifluous dreamscape with a Melodic Death Metal backdrop.

SONY DSC

Please give me some style points for trying to explain! I found this EP to be a quasi-challenge to review, regarding how I would describe it musically. Some may even interpret Countless Skies as progressive in its structure. I do recommend fans of Enslaved to Amorphis to give this band a listen and support them. I recommend Countless Skies to any Metal fan looking for a new and talented band to check out, for that matter.

Melodic Death Metal fans that are looking for the thunder of Amon Amarth be forewarned, Countless Skies are much more subtle about the power to devour. This is an EP I will definitely add to my playlist and I’m happy to spread the Metal word about. Metal be thy name – Stone

Below, listen to and support Countless Skies:

Track List: Ethereal, Penance, Everlast, Reverence

ANAAL NATHRAKH “Desideratum” – A Metal Odyssey Album Review

Anaal Nathrakh - Desideratum - promo album cover pic - #2014ANMO

4.5 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

4.5 metal-fists-4-5-album-reviews-metal-odyssey

The eighth studio album from the UK’s Anaal Nathrakh was released back in October of 2014, via Metal Blade Records. Now, say Anaal Nathrakh ten times fast! Sometimes I get into these type of silly Metal moods. Well, let’s just say that Anaal Nathrakh will never perform live on the lame-ass Grammy Awards show. This band has carved a respectable career out of playing Extreme Metal and their latest album, Desideratum, is no stray from the Extreme path.

I really appreciate the diversity of this band, with Extreme Metal leading the way; I also enjoy fully the Power Metal style vocals that compliment the Blackened, Death and Grind vocals. Anaal Nathrakh play a buzz saw and in-your-face brand of Extreme Metal; Desideratum is so delightfully overwhelming that I nearly cry out: my brain and ears are punished, no mas!! Funny thing is, I have played this album on repeat just to take in its stunning intensity.

Anaal Nathrakh - promo band pic - #2014ANMO66

L to R: David Hunt aka V.I.T.R.I.O.L and Mick Kenney

I’ve always adhered to the Metal notion that there’s a ton to be said about listening to Extreme Metal and taking in the sonic assault from Anaal Nathrakh makes me feel like I’ve punched a heavy bag when I never did; that makes me feel good inside and feeling good from any music is what matters most.

I can’t explain it, however, listening to this album has an almost mysterious addiction about it; it’s Extreme and it’s also a potent Metal statement as to how immensely memorable melodies can co-exist within the framework of an Extreme Metal album.

If you’re a fan of Abiotic, Alterbeast or The Black Dahlia Murder, (for examples), you will become an instant fan of Anaal Nathrakh. Long time fans of this brutal band should be very pleased with Desideratum; I know I’m very pleased. Metal be thy name. – Stone

ALTERBEAST “Immortal” – A Metal Odyssey Album Review

Posted in Metal, metal bands, metal music, Music, rock music with tags , , , , on February 5, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Alterbeast - Immortal - promo album cover pic - #2014AMO

4.5 METAL Fists Out Of 5!

4.5 metal-fists-4-5-album-reviews-metal-odyssey

ALTERBEAST originate from Sacramento, California and released their debut full-length album, Immortal, back in March of 2014 via Unique Leader Records. You can call ALTERBEAST Death Metal and/or Technical Death Metal. The guitars and bass were recorded at Augmented Audio in Los Angeles, with former The Black Dahlia Murder bassist Ryan “Bart” Williams.

ALTERBEAST formed in 2011 under the working title: Gary Busey Amber Alert (GBAA). Unreal stuff. If you’re a fan of Metal that combines an extreme rhythm section with hell inspired vocals and big melodic guitars then ALTERBEAST should sonically satisfy your Metal craving. The guitars of Rusty Cornell and Andrew Lamb on Immortal are both violent and dare I say, Neo-Classical? Regardless, I absolutely love listening to these two guitarists alone.

Alterbeast - promo band pic - #1 - 2013

There is an abundance of musical substance on this album, from the lyrics to the blazing guitar solos, with the formidable rhythm section of bassist Michael Zamora and seasoned drummer Gabe Seeber holding it all together. Vocalist Cam Rogers is damn good and when I try to sing a verse along to this album it’s a total disaster. Extreme Metal singers are a breed of their own and Cam Rogers is a powerful vocalist to reckon with.

ALTERBEAST unleashed their first demo in 2012 and then officially began touring, doing numerous shows while opening for such Metal legends as Deicide, Dying Fetus, Testament, Revocation, Exhumed, Severed Savior and many others. When you open for a Metal crowd like that, it equates to Metal respect.

ALTERBEAST did create moments for the listener to catch their breath, during their sonic Death and destruction on Immortal; the sounds of (what I think are) geese can be heard as part of the outro to Mutilated Marvel. There is evil chanting that is the intro to Serpentspire. Excellent! Throne Of Maggots is the album closer and its outro is the sound of distant winds. Going backwards to the album opener, Flesh Bound Text begins with the peaceful sounds of an old 78rpm playing a strings and piano number… then ALL hell breaks loose. Love it. I look forward to great Metal things from ALTERBEAST. Metal be thy name. – Stone

Metal Odysseys Top Ten Metal Album Of 2014 - promo block - #2014MO

Metal Odyssey’s Top Ten Metal Albums Of 2014: The Metal album releases during 2014 were abundant and fun to chase down and listen to. As with previous years, I’ve compiled a best of list for Metal albums; only this year it is a Top 10 instead of the annual Top 20. I finally decided to give myself a year off from trying to decide if a #15 Metal album was any better than a #16 Metal album. You know?

A Top 10  this year just seems so right and hopefully one or some of your favorite Metal bands/albums are featured below. These 10 Metal albums gave me the most Metal joy during 2014, standing out from the rest and I cannot be more honest than that. They’re the crème de la crème of 2014 Metal albums for my Metal soul. Of course, I highly and 100% recommend these Top Ten Metal Albums below! Thank you for visiting and supporting Metal Odyssey! Thank you to ALL the bands below for existing! Happy Metal New Year and Metal Be Thy Name! – Stone

Phantom 13 - Out For Blood - promo cover pic - 2014

PHANTOM 13 – OUT FOR BLOOD

PHANTOM 13 fuse Horror Punk and Horror Metal with impeccable style and sound on Out For Blood. Hail PHANTOM 13 and Ohio’s Metal underground!

Laika - Somnia - promo cover pic - 2014

#9

LAIKA – SOMNIA

Canada’s Metal underground is potent and one reason why is: LAIKA. This brilliant band has bestowed upon my Metal soul a non-stop sonic assault of 100% ass kicking Melodic Death Metal. Whoa.

Kreyskull - Tower Witch - promo album cover pic

#8

KREYSKULL – TOWER WITCH

Definitely the most intriguing Metal album that I savored in 2014. KREYSKULL combine clean vocals with a Classic Rock meets Heavy Metal methodology and I’m digging it immensely! This album is so good, I wanna bawl with tears of Metal joy.

Stormwarrior - Thunder & Steel - promo cover pic - 2014

#7

STORMWARRIOR – THUNDER & STEELE

STORMWARRIOR released a most memorable slab of Power Metal/Speed Metal with Thunder & Steele. An early release in 2014, I never let this CD stray too far from me all year. Read my complete album review for Thunder & Steele, by clicking that stunning link below. Whoa!

Triptykon - Melana Chasmata - promo cover pic - 2014

#6

TRIPTYKON – MELANA CHASMATA

The rough translation for Melana Chasmata is  “black, deep depressions/valleys” and that is absolutely the Metal sound, vibes, mood and feel that I so cherish from this second full-length TRIPTYKON album. Vocalist, guitarist, songwriter and founding member Tom Gabriel Warrior is a Metal icon and rules the Metal underworld.

Electric Wizard - Time To Die - promo cover pic - 2014

#5

ELECTRIC WIZARD – TIME TO DIE

ELECTRIC WIZARD scares the Metal shit out of me and that’s what makes them so endearing to me. This evil album is Doom, Stoner and Horror that reveals the true identity of the world today… and that identity is not very kind towards humankind. ELECTRIC WIZARD have given me much Metal wisdom to ponder…

Hammerfall - Revolution - promo album cover pic - #2014HM

#4

HAMMERFALL – (r)Evolution

What is possibly the best HAMMERFALL album ever, I love everything this album has to offer: soaring and triumphant vocals, dazzling guitars, a booming rhythm section and eloquent keys. HAMMERFALL has never let me down. All Hail HAMMERFALL!!

Rigor Mortis - Slaves To The Grave - 2014 promo album cover - #2014 - #03MA

#3

RIGOR MORTIS – SLAVES TO THE GRAVE

Legends and pioneers of Speed Metal, RIGOR MORTIS have culminated their Metal legacy with Slaves To The Grave. The late Mike Scaccia (founding member, guitarist, songwriter) is an illustrious listen and vocalist Bruce Corbitt sings with brutal Metal fervor. Don’t pay any attention to this album being #3 and just know RIGOR MORTIS and Slaves To The Grave are American Metal treasures.

Metal Inquisitor - Ultima Ratio Regis - promo album cover pic - #2014 - #02M

#2

METAL INQUISITOR

ULTIMA RATIO REGIS

I find Germany’s METAL INQUISITOR to be a sensational Metal band. Period. This razor-sharp Metal band has written and plays Traditional Metal in exemplary fashion on Ultima Ratio Regis. Massacre Records have a Metal gem with this band.

Sabaton - Heroes - promo album cover pic - #2014 - 1Metal

#1

SABATON – HEROES

One of the greatest Metal albums I’ve ever had the honor to listen to and enjoy is SABATON’s Heroes. I realize our world needs more heroes more today than I can remember in my lifetime. SABATON celebrates a history of our War Heroes, the free world’s war heroes at that. This, I believe, is a Power Metal album for the ages.

SABATON - Heroes - Amazon - #1 - 2014

Above: I am not alone, SABATON Heroes was a #1 Best Seller on Amazon.com during 2014!

The Ballad Of Bull chokes me up every time I listen to it. My fists get a workout as I pump them into the air when SABATON Heroes is  played. For me, vocalist Joakim Brodén has never sounded more powerful on vocals and the entire band are thoroughly at the top of their Metal game. This is victorious Metal with an undeniable passion for world freedom and I will cherish this SABATON album for the rest of my Metal life. Metal be thy name. God Bless Sweden and God Bless America. – Stone

The Long-Awaited Second Album “Pain & Pleasure” By APOCRYPHAL VOICE Is Available Now!

Posted in Metal, metal bands, metal music, music news, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , on December 30, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

Apocryphal Voice - promo album cover - #2014AV

Apocryphal Voice was formed in 1999 by Juhani Jokisalo after having grown out both with musical taste and ambitions from a previous more conventional Dark Metal band, where he was the bassist. Rebellion against that moment’s Finnish Metal scene also played it’s part in giving motivation.

“The Sickening” demo was recorded in late 2000 with Juhani and drummer Ville Salonen as the only band members. It contained 3 fiercely left-field Metal songs utilizing bare negative emotions. “The Sickening” found its way to the hands of label Rage of Achilles, who released it as such in 2003 as a mini-cd.

Apocryphal Voice - promo band pic - #2014AV - 0012

The following full-lenght “Stilltrapped”, now leaning more towards a sort of depressive wintry Rock than black-based Metal, was self-recorded bit by bit during following years. Apocryphal Voice came to attention of Blut Aus Nord’s Vindsval who at the helm of Candlelight sublabel Appease Me, had arranged the release for “Stilltrapped” in 2007.

The following songs ultimately ended up for the “Pain & Pleasure” full-length and began being composed arranged and rehearsed painstakingly, without any hurry. The new material formed out to have more vitality than before, Death Metal influences started creeping in and the sound production was sought out to have more earthly feel. The decision to release the album via distributor/promoter Inverse Records ensured the complete independence.

Apocryphal Voice is impossible to pin down into any established genre or made to tamely serve any non-artistic usage. It is Metal music for true music lovers – those who wish to deeply explore harmonic tensions, structural narratives, and raw emotions, often discomforting ones too.

Vile Regression - Free Music - Empires - album promo flyer - 2014

Yes, you did read it right, Irish tech metallers Vile Regression have just announced the release of their brand new record ‘Empires’ and it’s free for all.

Guitarist Brian Brady comments: “We’ve been blown away by the positive feedback we have received from the online metal community and printed metal press for ‘Empires’. The reviews have been incredibly positive and at this stage we want as many people to hear the record as possible! On top of this, the EP has already become available to download on various blogs and torrent sites, so rather than metal fans downloading a poor quality version, we want them to be able to download a full quality release of ‘Empires’, along with the artwork, lyrics and be able to share the download link with their friends. We hope people will enjoy listening to it as much as we did making it and look forward to seeing many of you on the road in 2015. Happy Christmas from Vile Regression!”

Praise For Vile Regression:

“…progressive death metal that easily sits alongside the output from most of today’s big extreme metal names.” – Metal Hammer

“The talent coming out of Ireland has been nothing short of staggering, and this Dublin-based crew are up there with the best of them.” – Zero Tolerance

ABOUT VILE REGRESSION:

Formed from the ashes of Irish extreme metal outfit Vistor Q; Vile Regression hit the scene in 2010 and released their debut record ‘The Pattern Evolves’ in 2011, via Casket Music.

After sharing stages with prolific heavyweights such as Dyscarnate, Fleshgod Apocalypse and Unearth, Vile Regression built a reputation as a tight and energetic new addition to the extreme metal underground and 2013 saw the band head back to the studio to record a new installment… ‘Empires’.

‘Empires’ was recorded at Trackmix Studio in Dublin, Ireland with producer Michael Richards and features 7 tracks of extreme metal; technical, yet not technical for the sake of it; with songs that would bode well on the ears of those with a penchant for progressive metal on the darker and heavier end. The record was officially released on July 21st, 2014.

Fed-up with the entire trend flooding the scene, NERVOCHAOS was formed in mid-1996, with the idea of creating aggressive and chaotic music, shredding the barriers of Death Metal and Hardcore. The band gained cult status in the extreme music scene due to their hard work over the past years, offering a sonic extravaganza in their unique way. Their demo-tapes have become collector’s items in the underground, supporting their regular releases.

The band is not afraid of touring or performing live. They did many tours around Europe, South America; and shared the stage with several acts such as VENOM, POSSESSED, CANNIBAL CORPSE, KREATOR, BIOHAZARD, AGNOSTIC FRONT, CARCASS, NAPALM DEATH, DISMEMBER, D.R.I., MAYHEM, THE EXPLOITED and many more to list.

After 18 years of churning out some of the most furious and vehement Metal the South American underground has experienced, NERVOCHAOS is back with The Art of Vengeance. The band’s sixth studio album, The Art of Vengeance is poised to be a standout album of 2014.

HELLION – 2014 Recap and 2015 Updates, Courtesy Of Ann Boleyn

Ann Boleyn - Hellion - publicity pic - 2014 - #77663

From the Hellion Headquarters newsletter:

Hi Friends,

Sorry for the delay in posting news.  It’s been a crazy few weeks ever since returning from tour!

As, many of you know, in addition to being the singer of Hellion, and of running New Renaissance, I am also an attorney. I was back to work, and in court on the following Monday after the tour.  However, a lot of work has now paid off with the successful resolution of a major case. Now its time to get back to working on more creative endeavors and on planning for a great 2015.

In between all of that, Hellion released our first official video in over a decade. The video is of our new song, Betrayer, and includes fan-filmed video from our shows in Toronto, Los Angeles, Boise, Seattle, and a few more cities.  If you haven’t already seen it, check it out here. (Or below):

Maxxxwell Carlisle, Simon Wright, and myself are already writing new music. I will also be singing a cover-version of a Scorpions song on Max’s new solo CD. I will be recording the vocal track for that in the next week or two.

Hellion also recorded the shows from the recent Hellion tour. So, over the holidays, we will be mixing those tracks and will eventually release them on a live CD.

As far as live shows, Hellion will be playing May 9, 2015 at the Arcadia Theater in St. Charles, IL with Y&T and Quiet Riot. More US shows will be added, too in 2015.   We will also be doing shows in Europe and the UK. In fact, we have bookings now through 2016.  Due to our contracts with some of the promoters, I can’t announce some of the shows until the promoters officially announce them.

2014 has been a very productive year. We released two new CDs:  (1) Hellion’s “To Hellion & Back” 2-CD anthology; and, (2) “Karma’s A Bitch.”  Both CDs are available at all major outlets.  We did our first tour in North America, as well.

Both myself and the band have a lot in store for 2015. We will be releasing our first vinyl releases in over a decade soon (in limited edition). We will have a new live album, some more re-releases, and of course new music for you, too.

I am also going to start work on a book. The book will be entitled “The Art of Singing Loud.” The book will focus on the unique challenges that are faced by singers of hard rock, thrash, metal, punk, etc. An important part of this book will include interviews from well-respected singers, I have already received commitments from a number of great singers and will be announcing more details in the coming weeks.

I will give everybody more updates, soon.  Meanwhile, please make sure you are on the Hellion mailing list so you don’t miss out!

And, don’t miss out on our awesome sale in the Hellion Store, too.  We’ve put together some killer fan bundles with limited edition tour merchandise. And, as an added bonus, we will be adding some special gifts with each order.

Best Witches,

Ann Boleyn

KOUZIN BEDLAM – Debut Album “Longing For The Incomplete” Is Available Now!

Posted in Metal, metal bands, Music, music news, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , on December 9, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

Kouzin Bedlam - Longing for the incomplete - promo album cover

Kouzin Bedlam is a baroque painting painted in the colors of Heavy Metal. It is highly technical and deeply embedded in mythology; it is sometimes over the top, yet always lyrical and sublime. Its extraordinary qualities lie not just in terms of song writing and technical ability. In fact, Kouzin Bedlam is not just a band; it is a philosophy, it is a family; it is psychology and spirituality expressed in a musical extravaganza with surprising depths.

Carl Gustav Jung uncovered the archetypes dwelling in our collective unconscious. Our image of a great mother, the devil, God, the trickster and the hero all sit deep inside our minds. And then there is Kouzin Bedlam – the unknown twin, the uncivilized ”I”, we all try to ignore. The band’s debut album, Longing for the Incomplete (produced by Jimmy Westerlund), releases this being upon the conscious world. Kouzin Bedlam does its entrance in a blaze of virtuosic Heavy Metal, at times highly aggressive, at others bittersweet and melancholic. Lyrically it does everything from cursing its very existence to learning how to breathe.

Kouzin Bedlam Promo

As mentioned, Kouzin Bedlam has so far been unknown to the world of conscious human thoughts, but the members of the band are all experienced musicians, artists and doomsday philosophers.

The debut album Longing For The Incomplete was released December 5th by Inverse Records. Listen to album on spotify Kouzin Bedlam – Longing for the Incomplete.

ARBITRATOR – Free Download ‘For That Which May Appease Lions’ Featuring Drummer Dirk Verbeuren (Soilwork)

ARBITRATOR is a project that began in late 2010 as the brainchild of Robert Kukla and officially debut in 2011 with the EP ‘The Consummate Ascendancy’ with former drummer Corey Chernesky. Now, determined to release a full-length to top “TCA“, Kukla on rhythm guitar, bass and vocals has written the band’s first album with a whole new arsenal of musicians that includes drummer Dirk Verbeuren (Soilwork, ex-Devin Townsend Project, ex-Aborted), Myles Malloy on lead guitar and Connor ORT Linning for programming.

The planned 2015 release will be entitled ‘Indoctrination of Sacrilege’ and was produced by Sacha Laskow (ex-Divinity, Every Hour Kills), mastered by ens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia, Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy), Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia, Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy), along with album artwork done by Colin Marks (Exodus, Scar Symmetry, Jeff Loomis).

The first track ‘For That Which May Appease Lions’ from the forthcoming 2015 album is now available for FREE download on PuregrainAudio.com here.

‘For That Which May Appease Lions’ is quite possibly one of my favourite tracks off of the new album. Dark, ‘Resident Evil’ style passages compliment sections of blistering blast beats performed by the skins-king himself, Dirk Verbeuren. It is a track that is as dynamic as it is brutal, and certainly not for those that shy away from the radical nature of the progressive genre. Comments Kukla.

In addition, Toontrack.com has released on their youtube channel a drum play through video featuring drummer Dirk Verbeuren (Soilwork, ex-Devin Townsend Project, ex-Aborted) performing ‘For That Which May Appease Lions’.

  1. They Will Worship This Fire of Agony (6:41)
  2. Stillborn Bastard of The Nazarene (6:50)
  3. For That Which May Appease Lions (6:56)
  4. Serpent of The Styx (8:41)
  5. Profaned and Perfected (7:30)
  6. The Burning Sands of His Kingdom (instrumental) (3:14)

DEWAR PR – Releases Free Digital Compilation

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, music news, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , on December 3, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

Dewar PR - logo - red-black-2014

Back in the day people used to make mixtapes for each other on actual cassette tapes. With the coming of CDs, CD compilations became a big thing. The internet age in the 21st Century is fastly eroding the physical in music and digital is how everything is done. Compilations and mixtapes have not died away though and thanks to such streaming sites like Bandcamp, Soundcloud and YouTube, people can freely share their favourite tunes.

Dewar PR, which specialises in effective Heavy Metal and Hard Rock publicity, has put together a digital compilation of some of the most interesting tunes coming from the Heavy Metal underground at the moment. This collection of songs represents what Dewar PR strives for: discovering talent deep in the underground and providing it with the media coverage it deserves.

The compilation is available for free streaming and download via MetalRecusants. (URL: http://metalrecusants.com/2014/12/03/dewar-pr-releases-free-compilation-via-metalrecusants/)

For more information regarding Dewar PR, please visit us on Facebook, Twitter or simply email us at dewarpr@gmail.com

Included on this digital mixtape are bands that have worked with Dewar PR and those who haven’t but we thought that you would enjoy.
