VEXING – ‘Grand Reproach’ Out Now!

Posted in Heavy Metal, Metal, metal bands, metal music, Music, music news, news with tags , , , , , , , , on May 28, 2023 by Metal Odyssey

Denver’s progressive sludge trio, VEXING present their debut full-length Grand Reproach – a sonic landscape, unsoothing by design. With striking guitar tones, fiercely spirited drums and mercilessly relentless riffs, Vexing create an overwhelmingly heavy soundscape with an undulating and frightening ambience.

Grand Reproach is available now on CD, cassette, and digital formats via Ordovician Records. Order at: ordovicianrecords.bandcamp.com.

Stream Grand Reproach on Spotify and Apple Music.

Grand Reproach – track listing:
1) The Mold
2) Vanquishing Light
3) The Invisible Hand
4) Shallow Breath
5) Howling
6) Blunderbuss
7) Small Black Flame
8) Red Skies

Active since 2017, VEXING is a progressive sludge trio that doesn’t make the most soothing music. But that’s all by design.

With influences stemming from sludge acts like Yautja, and Inter Arma but also from more progressive acts like Russian Circles and even Rush – the music is a certain grinding brand of sludge that reaches towards a more dynamic sound.

It’s an enveloping and obtuse experience that’ll leave you engaged with that tension you’ve always had.

Grand Reproach was written and produced by VEXING (Clayton Whitelaw, Garrett Jones, Jeff Malpezzi). The album was mixed and mastered by Mikey Allred from Dark Art Audio. Artwork by Ethan Lee McCarthy / Hell Simulation, with layout/design by Andrew Notsch.

Canada’s Alienatör Take A Dark And Harrowing Turn With “The Priest” Off “Regrets” – Out Nov 25th

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, metal bands, metal music, Music, music news, news, sludge metal news with tags , , , , , , , , , , on November 6, 2022 by Metal Odyssey

Hailing from Canada, Alienatör is a sludge metal band that confronts tough issues with razor-sharp riffs and memorable hooks. They released their debut album “Pariahs’ in 2019, and are now following it up this year with “Regrets”, which is darker, more focused, and more intense. They say it also boasts better songwriting and more dynamics. The themes of this upcoming release also explore some heavy topics including alienation, grief, pain, and disgust at the state of the modern world. The single “The Priest” is no exception, which vocalist/guitarist Brad King explains:

This is the darkest song I’ve ever written. Another is where the bass really drives the song and the guitar comes in, jagged and angular on top. Ralph Rowe was an Anglican Priest who molested countless kids in fly-in reserves in the 70s and 80s. He ruined so many lives and plea-bargained for a prison sentence that was a slap on the wrist. There’s a documentary about him called “Survivor’s Rowe,” and I’ve met a few survivors through my work. Here, he serves as an example of the type of abuse of power we allow those in positions of trust. I’m proud of the dynamics of this one, lots of tension and release and the calm atmospheric part in the middle.”

The music video for “The Priest” can be seen and heard via its premiere on IDIOTEQ HERE.

Composed during the claustrophobia of the 2020 election and the global pandemic the album channels rage and catharsis before lulling the listener into a sense of security and then thundering down again into a feedback-drenched conclusion.

Compared to their debut release, fans will recognize a more hard-hitting sound, depth of songwriting, dynamics, darker themes, and more vulnerable and introspective lyrics. Alienatör has matured and grown as musicians, with the addition of drummer Simon Paquette who has added a lot of depth to the sound, and bass player Sean Skillen becoming part of the writing process has added a new dimension. The band is a more cohesive unit and it shows in the material.

Alienatör is recommended for sludge fans as well as those who enjoy Melvins, Neurosis, and Botch.

GNASH – To Release Debut EP “Shared Nightmare”

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal bands, Metal, metal bands, metal music, Music, music news, news, ohio with tags , , , , , , , , , on August 28, 2022 by Metal Odyssey

Sludge metal newcomers, GNASH, are preparing to unleash their debut EP, Shared Nightmare, on September 22nd.

Josh Richter of GNASH comments:

“I’ve never done a concept record before so I wanted to try to tell a story in great detail over an entire record rather than just one song. As dark and gruesome as the concept is, the underlying theme is the feeling of carrying around emotional baggage and trauma your whole life and the effects it takes on someone. Life is a heavy burden sometimes.”

Formed this year in Columbus, Ohio, GNASH has already established a powerful and unique sound, drawing influence from the depth of death metal, the raw emotion of black metal, and heaviness of sludge metal, the band’s debut EP, Shared Nightmare, is a profound and thought-provoking insight into the darkest reaches of mental health issues.

Shared Nightmare tells a tale of conjoined twins, where one half of the pair dies. The remaining twin must continue on in life, carrying with him a corpse he can’t be rid of. The EP is an exploration of what it means to bear trauma and the toll it takes after a lifetime of being weighed down by such inescapable feelings.

Not for the faint of heart, prepare to be transported into a dark and chilling tale in GNASH’s debut EP, Shared Nightmare, coming September 22nd.

Nicky Richter – Guitar

Ethan Martin – Bass

Keenan McNeal – Drums

Anselmo, Pepper Keenan, Jimmy Bower, Pat Bruders, and Kirk Windstein uphold a certain tradition that countless fans celebrate, expanding their own musical mythos as they leave its pillars intact and untouched.

With a collective resume encompassing Pantera, Corrosion Of Conformity, Crowbar, and EyeHateGod, the quintet puffed out its first haze of sonic smoke from the belly of gritty old New Orleans on the 1995 platinum-selling classic, NOLA. At that moment, they naturally summoned something akin to a ritual, continually partaking in it with critically revered offerings — Down II: A Bustle In Your Hedgerow in 2002, Down III: Over The Under in 2007, Down IV – Part One in 2012, and Down IV – Part Two in 2014. Their shows built a certain live lore with unforgettable runs alongside Metallica and Heaven & Hell as well as coveted spots on iconic fests like Download, Soundwave, Ozzfest, and so many others forever delivering passionate, powerful, pure heavy music you can feel deep down in your soul.

EYEHATEGOD – RETURN TO CENTURY MEDIA RECORDS

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Music, music news, news, rock music, world news with tags , , , , , on November 17, 2020 by Metal Odyssey

Nov. 17, 2020, NEW ORLEANS – EyeHateGod, “the quintessential Southern sludge band” (Pitchfork) that Rolling Stone dubbed one of “America’s great live bands,” have returned to Century Media Records, with an eye towards a Spring 2021 release for the band’s first album in seven years: A History of Nomadic Behavior (date TBA).

A joint statement from the band on the band and label reunion: “EyeHateGod are pleased to announce we’ve signed a licensing deal with Century Media Records USA and Europe…! We welcome the new changes along with the new year coming, and want this union to benefit everyone involved, especially our rabid and disturbed fans across the globe!”

“We’re happy to announce solidifying our worldwide relationship with EyeHateGod,” added Director of Century Media Records, Phillipp Schulte. “While Century Media has worked with the guys in the past, we’re excited to begin a new chapter with a record that easily ranks amongst this hard-working, heavy-touring band’s best. We are very much looking forward to releasing EyeHateGod’s A Historic of Nomadic Behavior.”

“EyeHateGod are survivors on every level,” says Century Media Records Vice President of A&R, Mike Gitter. “Since 1988 they’ve been part of the framework of extreme music and A History of Nomadic Behavior will be no exception. Theirs is a tough and turbulent road that would have stopped most bands dead in their tracks. Not these NOLA legends. Century Media has been part of their career from the early days and we’re excited to be working together again. EyeHateGod is here to stay.”

The cover art for A History of Nomadic Behavior has been revealed as the band and label prepare to share additional details about the album in coming weeks.

About EyeHateGod:

New Orleans’ EyeHateGod is the snarling, bilious sound of dead-end America. Since 1988, they’ve been a soundtrack for the troubled masses. Ugly music for ugly times. That’s the sense of disenchantment and disease that lies at the heart of their latest and sixth full-length album, A History of Nomadic Behavior. Anyone familiar with EHG’s story knows this is survivor’s music, a sound unto itself where Sabbathian riffs are meted out with a caustic anger that goes beyond punk. That’s been the blueprint since guitarist Jimmy Bower (also of NOLA supergroup, Down) founded the band in 1988 with vocalist Michael IX Williams joining not long after. With a discography including sludge-punk mainstays like In the Name of Suffering (1990), Take as Needed for Pain (1993) Dopesick (1996), Confederacy of Ruined Lives (2000) or 2014’s eponymously-titled LP, released in the US through Housecore Records, EHG laid the cracked foundation for their infamous and influential sound.

FISTULA was forged in 1998 by musical partners-in-crime Corey Bing and Bahb Branca. Over the years, FISTULA has released a seemingly endless barrage of studio albums and split EPs through numerous lineup changes featuring the creative talents of bands such as Sloth, Hemdale, The Disease Concept, Accept Death, and so many others. FISTULA is a band that is impossible to categorize, combining elements of remedial sludge, hardcore and a proverbial “bad case of the Mondays.” Nearing two decades of ear bleeding, FISTULA remains the the miserable kings of sludgecore.

BELDAM – To Release New Studio Album “PASUNG” On January 26th

Posted in Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, news, rock music with tags , , , , on December 24, 2017 by Metal Odyssey

BELDAM - PASUNG - promo cover pic - 2018 - #333MO9ILMN

Seattle (WA) – Horror Pain Gore Death Productions are set to release Pasung, the sophomore album from Doom/Sludge titans BELDAM, January 26 on CD and Digital formats.  New song “Vial of Silence” is streaming at youtu.be/emm4kEbWsVM or below:

Pasung is BELDAM‘s second release on Horror Pain Gore Death Productions and their first with new vocalist/lyricist Randall Guidry. The band recently relocated to Seattle, continuing their vision to play skull-crushing, soul-wrenching, paint-peeling Sludge with blackened touches. With influences ranging from Sleep, EyeHateGod, Graves At Sea, The Melvins and Black Sabbath, BELDAM combines a massive wall of guitars, thickened bass tones, bone-rattling drums and harsh vocals featuring lyrics building on the themes of death and despair. Pasung clocks in at 50 minutes of pure, unadulterated American Sludge.

Pasung was recorded at The Bomb Shelter in Nashville, TN, April 5-7, with additional tracking on August 31 and September 1, 2017. The album was engineered and mastered by Drew Carroll who recorded BELDAM‘s original 5-song demo in 2015. All guitars and bass on the recording were performed by Grahm Reynolds with the exception of “One from the Stable.” Cullen Wade handled the drums on the entire record. Pasung represents the truest BELDAM. The band focused a significant amount of time on songwriting and pre-production to get the heaviest tones and thickest riffs possible. After parting ways with their original bassist and relocating to Seattle, BELDAM is psyched to release Pasung to the masses and play as many shows as possible in its new Pacific Northwest home.

Track Listing:

  1. Vial Of Silence
  2. Sunken Sorceress
  3. Shed The Coil
  4. One From The Stable
  5. Carrion Feast
  6. That Which Consumes You

OMMADON – UK Drone/Doom Duo To Undrape “Empathy For The Wicked” Via Golden Mantra This July

Posted in Metal, metal bands, metal music, Music, rock music with tags , , , on May 30, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Ommadon - Empathy For The Wicked - promo album cover pic - 2015 - #MO0529

Following the crushing doom of their critically adored, 2014 double LP, V, which earned a spot on Rolling Stone’s 20 Best Metal Albums Of 2014, UK drone/doom duo, OMMADON, continues their perpetual quest to achieve sonic annihilation of the self through unadulterated heaviness with Empathy For The Wicked. Boasting just one earth-rupturing track broken into two parts, Empathy For The Wicked was recorded live, mixed by OMMADON and mastered by recording legend, Billy Anderson (Neurosis, Zoroaster, Eyehategod, Taurus, Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth etc.), who gave it the final crushing touches it deserves.

Where OMMADON‘s previous scores were all recorded in the Highlands of Scotland surrounded by forest, Empathy For The Wicked marks their first release to be recorded on an industrial estate in urban Northumberland surrounded by the dregs of humanity. The first track from Empathy For The Wicked was originally recorded for the cassette split with Horse Latitudes and Coltsblood. During that session, OMMADON decided to continue recording through the night and drone out the riff which became the second side to Empathy For The Wicked.

Empathy For The Wicked will be released on 12″ vinyl via Golden Mantra on July 15th, 2015 with preorders available at: www.goldenmantra.co.uk. Teasers to be unveiled in the coming weeks.

Critical Hails For V:

A hypnotic, dead-eyed combination where patience, misanthropy and endurance collide; a zombie chained to a pole walking the same ugly circle.” – Rolling Stone

“Split across four sides of vinyl, the double record was mastered by Billy Anderson… so you can bet your favourite Sunn O))) picture disc on this thing sounding heavier than a dying planet.” – Terrorizer

Indiana Stoner/Sludge Rockers YELLOWTOOTH Entering Studio To Record Sophomore Album

Yellowtooth - promo band pic - 2014 - #3387

Michigan City, Indiana’s own Sludge/Stoner band YELLOWTOOTH is preparing to hit the studio in September to record Crushed By The Wheels of Progress, the follow-up to the band’s 2012 debut album Disgust.

The album will be released through Orchestrated Misery Recordings. The band has eight songs ready to be sent into the audio stratosphere. Song titles include “Before I Return to Dust,” “The Spiral Stairs,” “Meet Mr. Mossberg,” “Climbing the Mountain,” “Manifesto,” and “Season’s End.”

Guitarist/vocalist Henry McGinnis commented on the new material:

“We haven’t really changed our writing style since the debut came out, but refined it a bit to suit our needs. Having been together since 2008 it’s just a natural progression of who we are.  The songs are still very heavy, and some parts still have the southern flair we have grown to enjoy since the beginning.”

YELLOWTOOTH is also gearing up for several shows this fall in the Chicagoland area with label-mates PSYCHOMANCER.

“‘Southern-fried stoner-sludge-doom?’ Fuck it. It’s heavy. It’s bad-ass. And it’s perfect when you’re chasin’ Beam with Busch Light.” – Heavy Planet

SECRET CUTTER – Independent Debut LP From Pennsylvania Trio Destroys Everything

Posted in metal music, Music, music news, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on July 4, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

Secret Cutter - promo band pic - 2014 - #03202

Bethlehem, Pennsylvania-based trio, SECRET CUTTER, has independently released their debut full-length LP, Self Titled.

Following SECRET CUTTER‘s debut EP, If You Don’t Hate Yourself, You’re Not Paying Attention, released on Square of Opposition Records, now crawls forth in the form of Self Titled, the band’s first full-length release. With over twenty-six minutes of new material, fully produced by the band at drummer Jared Stimpfl’s Captured Recording Studios, a maelstrom of their most forceful songwriting, and eclectic, brutal musical dementia comes alive with ten vigorous tracks.

Self Titled has already been picked up by random popular media outlets, including MetalSucks, who freaked over the LP: “They’re taking what bands like Nails, Black Breath and The Body are doing and somehow making it even more visceral, even more intense.” About.com was fully blown by trio’s delivery, stating, “A three-piece shouldn’t sound this heavy, but Allentown, Pennsylvania’s SECRET CUTTER manages to pull off the impossible… If you have even an inkling of a grind or sludge gene in your DNA, you need to check these guys out.” Echoes And Dust described the album as “…heavy sludge/grind/doom that is judiciously laced with feedback and a bit of punk rock intensity. You won’t believe it but the band is a three-piece, with just a drummer, guitar player, and vocalist. Your jaw will be on the floor less than ten seconds into the first track.”

Secret Cutter - Self Titled - promo cover pic - 2014

Released through their own Bethlehem Rust label, Self Titled is available for digital download as well as LP, in three different colors of vinyl which all include a digital download is included.

Self Titled can be streamed in its entirety and purchased RIGHT HERE.

SECRET CUTTER is at once familiar, utilizing the unchained tactics of Deadguy or Converge but conveyed through a sludge-filled wall of sonic concentration in the ways of Eyehategod, Floor or Godflesh; yet their inimitable delivery is instantly infectious fully on its own accord. Their enraged, grimy anthems have devastated audiences across the East Coast. The meager three-piece, vocalist Ekim, drummer Jared Stimpfl and guitarist Evan Morey – packing a backline sufficient to power a band twice their size, delivering a live show as intense as their recorded material.

Stand by for further updates on SECRET CUTTER in the coming weeks as the band confirms new live assaults throughout the tri-state area and more.

Self Titled – Track Listing:

1. Mirror Mirror

2. Deformed Eye

3. 17.5 Dead Air

4. Craving the Silence

5. Vow of Poverty

6. Shake the Malevolent

7. Midtro

8. End of Sylvan

Comments vocalist Mike IX Williams, “Turns out folks are as psyched up as we are about the new EHG album. The current tour is off the hook and the response has been completely fanatical!”

Critical Praise:

“…this entire album at times feels like being engulfed by a wet blanket on a 90-degree day… To say that this album is a triumphant return, or ‘the album we’ve all been waiting for’ are elephantine understatements. This album holds its own against some of the best of their canon and that alone makes it one of the best metal albums you’ll hear this year.” – Metal Insider

“…it’s all killer, no filler…” – Hellbound

HULL – Brooklyn Sludge Rock Cooperative Issues European Tour Wrap-Up; Live Footage Posted

Posted in Heavy Metal, metal bands, metal music, music news, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , on May 4, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

Hull Legend Of The Swamp Goat - promo cover pic - 2014 - #3349

Long-running Brooklyn sludge rock cooperative, HULL, recently wrapped up a two-week run of live takeovers through Europe. Joined by Boston doom bringers, Elder, the journey commenced in Tilburg, where the band systematically leveled the stage at Roadburn with their vibrating walls of hypnotic dirge.

Recounted bassist/vocalist Sean Bryant Dunn from their final show in London: “Our journey began in Tilburg for the Roadburn festival where we had the opportunity to play and hang out with some amazing friends, old and new. The following two weeks we burned many a mile with our new brothers Elder, reducing stages to rubble. There will not be a moment without the thought of touring with these boys. With that, I’ll say thanks to everyone that helped us out, put us up, fed us and for wrecking their necks at the show. Europe truly understands how to appreciate and respect all artists. We will be back as soon as humanly possible!”

Check out live footage from the tour, below:

HULL recently released a brand “new” hymn entitled, Swamp Goat. Originally tracked in 2007, “Swamp Goat” laid dormant while the band penned material for their critically lauded Sole Lord full-length. After a grueling tour schedule and follow-up release, 2011’s sprawling Beyond The Lightless Sky full-length, “Swamp Goat” was lost in the caves and forgotten… until now.

The tune features on the band’s Legend Of The Swamp Goat seven-inch unleashed in February via HULL’s own Iron Orchestra Works imprint and Midnight Collective. Bearing the stunning artwork of Nathan Overstrom, the single appears on Side A while an etching occupies Side B. Legend Of The Swamp Goat comes in limited pink, blue, green, and white vinyl.

HULL will be playing a hometown return show next month at Saint Vitus where copies of the 7″ can be purchased direct from the band.

HULL Live 2014:

5/17/2014 Saint Vitus Bar – Brooklyn, NY w/ Bloody Hammers [info]

HULL materializes as a massive entity, storming stages and immersing their audiences in a blanket of grandiose down-tuned compositions. A shifting fault line of decibel heavy harmony, this collective force converges in a collision of thrash, doom, classic rock, and formal orchestral works. HULL commands their listeners through each riff with incredible precision, as a seafarer guides vessels through ominous waters.

Submerged in cosmic soundscapes, HULL challenges the mind with flowing, off-time fugues and powerful, dynamic movements. Brace yourself for an onslaught of eruptive force as a new world of music is formed in the deafening clap of thunder that is HULL.

Purchase the Legend Of The Swamp Goat seven-inch, below:

“True to form, this ‘new’ tune bombards the listener from every angle with clever arrangements and bluesy bluster. ‘Swamp Goat’ is a hazy, hellbent ride through thickets of distortion and syrupy sludge.” – Noisey on “Swamp Goat”

LIONS OF TSAVO – Texas Metal/Sludge Trio Continues Spring Tour

Posted in Heavy Metal, metal bands, metal music, music news, news, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , on April 28, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

Lions Of Tsavo - promo band pic - 2014 - #44307

Following the release of their Traverser LP via Toxic Assets in November, Austin’s caustic Sludge Metal trio, LIONS OF TSAVO, continue to tour the American landscape in support of the album. The band is currently embarked on their latest trek with another five cities still in its path, including Birmingham, Jackson, Shreveport and Dallas next to get slammed; this week LIONS OF TSAVO plow homeward.

LIONS OF TSAVO Spring Tour [remaining dates]:

4/29/2014 The Forge – Birmingham, AL
4/30/2014 TBA – Jackson, MS
5/01/2014 Fatty Arbuckle’s – Shreveport, LA
5/02/2014 Chichen Itza – Dallas, TX

After a long absence between releases, LIONS OF TSAVO returned with their long and winding third full-length manifesto, Traverser. While not far-removed from the attack shown on Firelung, the band splices in more breathing space in the newer material, and matched with their torrential onslaught of amplification, their debilitating, diverse alloy of metallic sludge is unquestionably more devastatingly memorable on Traverser. Eviscerating landscapes through blood spitting riffs and mind altering psychedelics, Traverser is both destruction and redemption incarnate; a conceptual album where the music, lyrics and artwork align, and cannot be separated. Washington-based Toxic Assets released the album on CD in November, while a vinyl edition remains on deck for release later in 2014.

Additional upcoming LIONS OF TSAVO live actions will be continually announced into the Summer months. In the meantime, stream all of Traverser and purchase the digital/CD versions of the record below:

SERPENTINE PATH – Debuts First Single From Sophomore Relapse LP

Posted in Heavy Metal, metal bands, metal music, music news, rock music, rock music news, world news with tags , , , , , on April 17, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

Serpentine Path - Emanations - promo cover pic - 2014

Relapse Records has just released the first single to be released from the second LP from NYC morbid Sludge Metal kingpins, SERPENTINE PATH.

The highly anticipated follow-up to SERPENTINE PATH’s self-titled 2012 debut, Emanations, is the band’s first studio venture featuring new second guitarist Stephen Flam, the mastermind behind NYC doom/death legends, Winter – aligned with founding members Tim Bagshaw (ex-Ramesses, ex-Electric Wizard) and a triad of ex-Unearthly Trance members, bassist Jay Newman, drummer Darren Verni and vocalist Ryan Lipynsky (The Howling Wind). Capturing forty-five minutes of true sludge punishment from this true underground all-star team, Emanations was recorded by Newman, as with their debut, after which it was mastered at Audiosiege, the album dredging forth the band’s most demoralizing and anguish-filled slow-motion chaos yet, and fittingly enshrouded by striking artwork by in-house Relapse artist Orion Landau.

“Disfigured Colossus” is the fourth of Emanations‘ seven grueling tracks, and has been today released in several methods of dispersal, now playing at Youtube and Soundcloud HERE.

Listen to Disfigured Colossus, below!

Emanations will see release through Relapse on May 27th, 2014 on CD, LP and digital formats; preorders for the album can be placed HERE, and via iTunes HERE.

PRIZEHOG – Eolian Empire Prepares To Release Third LP From Celestial Space Sludge Trio

Posted in Heavy Metal, Metal, metal bands, metal music, Music, news, rock music, rock music news, world news with tags , , , , , on February 16, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

Prizehog - promo band pic - #19159 - 2014

PRIZEHOG, the massive, mind-bending Portland-by-way-of-the-Bay-Area trio, exists on their own cosmic plane. Combining meditative grooves, punishing sludge, dazzling melodies, ultra-heavy psych, and crunchy riffs aplenty using a baffling and impossibly cryptic calculus, the outfit has created its own bizarro universe of heaviness.

Re-Unvent the WhoolPRIZEHOG‘s third full-length release, is a magnificent, powerful LP; a byzantine labyrinth of impenetrable riffs, crushing dirges, heavy hooks, and warped excursions wrapped up in triumphant progressions made complete with downshifted bellows and dark cries; perplexing and mystifying yet grand, spellbinding, enthralling, and uncannily soulful. It’s a record full of depth, complexity, power, humor, and beauty.

Recorded and mixed by Toshi Kasai (Melvins, Big Business, Tool, Russian Circles) at his new Sun Valley studio Sound of Sirens, Re-Unvent the Whool is focused, sophisticated, and masterfully produced to showcase the exquisite but intense interaction within the trio: guitars, synths, and drums push and pull one another as they crunch, crush, whirl, weave, and straight up rock their way through mazes of dynamic and dramatic movements, adding layers upon layers to sculpt mountains of sonic majesty. Pitched-down vocals, at once otherworldly and deeply human, shift between omnipotent bellows, soulful wails, and surprisingly gorgeous chants, elevating the whole enterprise to a whole other level. Re-Unvent the Whool is a truly unique vision of genuine heaviness unlike anything you’ve heard, and bears an equally unique cover painting by New York artist Chris Jehly.

Eolian Empire will let PRIZEHOG out of the cages on March 4th via digital download and 180-gram vinyl LP. The street date will be celebrated early at a hometown record release gala on February 28th at Portland’s The Know, sharing the stage with Thrones and PolstPRIZEHOG is also currently scheduling a full US tour for May, with those dates to be released in the coming weeks. Preorders for the album are now live at the Eolian Empire fort HERE.

STONEBURNER – Portland Sludge Slingers Reveal Album Details

Posted in Heavy Metal, Metal, metal bands, metal music, Music, news, rock music, rock music news, sludge metal, world news with tags , , , , , , on February 1, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

Stoneburner - Life Drawing - promo album cover pic - 2014

Portland sludge slingers and recent Neurot family additions, STONEBURNER, are readying to unleash their forthcoming new full-length, Life DrawingThe follow-up to their 2012 debut, Sickness Will Pass, which The Sludgelord appropriately crowned “an ugly, visceral and truly terrifying beast of an album,”and Metal Underground dubbed “a bruising sludge/doom debut that is the perfect antidote to the dog days of summer,” features nine rumbling odes of bottom-heavy hostility and emotional decay.

Recorded, mixed and produced by Fester at Haywire Studios, mastered by Adam Gonsalves at Telegraph Mastering — both in Portland — and swathed in the visually abrasive cover art of J.J. Shirey, Life Drawing promises to hurl STONEBURNER’s habitually chest-caving sludge mantras to entirely new realms of earth-deteriorating heaviness.

Comments the band in a collective statement: “Lyrically we’ve always focused on personal matters, and one theme that particularly seems to keep coming up on this record is the struggle to be a decent person in a world that keeps doing its best to cause you not to be. J.J. Shirey, who paints our album covers, is part of the STONEBURNER brotherhood and we have absolute faith in him. We have him sit in on rehearsals, read our lyrics, and then we send him off to come up with whatever he thinks best suits the material. We feel that this piece absolutely captures the mood of trying to grow and heal, but constantly finding yourself falling back into the darkness caused by emotional and physical addictions. The world isn’t always a happy, beautiful place, and neither is our music. Thanks to J.J. you’re going to sense that before you even hear the album.”

Life Drawing Track Listing:

3. Drift

4. An Apology To A Friend In Need

5. Pale New Eyes

6. Giver Of Birth

8. You Are The Worst

9. The Phoenix

Stoneburner - promo band pic - 2013 - #11870

STONEBURNER features a persuasive musical ancestry that winds through Buried At Sea, Buried Blood, Heathen Shrine and others. Named after a subterranean weapon from the novel DuneSTONEBURNER deliver a wholly organic orchestration of captivating, crustified doom metal, their torrid hymns bathed in internal agony, anguish and despair. To define STONEBURNER, one need only look to the list of bands with whom they’ve shared the stage: Yob, Sleep, Eyehategod, Neurosis, Buzzov-en, Weedeater, Saint Vitus, Watain, Tragedy, Noothgrush, Graves At Sea, Lord Dying, Drop Dead, Whitehorse, Wind Hand, Bastard Noise…

Life Drawing will be unleashed via Neurot Recordings later this Spring. Stay tuned for further info.
