4 Metal Fists Out Of 5!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall4

DARKENTRIES is a Post-Sludge band from Columbia, South Carolina and one of the first signed bands to Kylesa’s new record label: Retro Futurist. Overall, this 5 song debut EP from Darkentries, The Make Believe, is a blend of extreme, macabre sound, vibes and emotions. If you can picture how the Melvins would sound being phenomenally pissed off, coupled with the dark anger of Trillion Red, then you’ll (hopefully) know what Darkentries is serving for Metal dinner… and it’s not your grandma’s mac and cheese.

With all of that above blab stated, Darkentries are unique, with an overriding Doom Metal quality and forceful energy about their Metal. If you like to be scared straight, then play this nifty EP in a total dark room by yourself. The vocals alone are an extreme showstopper and quite possibly from dark places unknown to mankind. Don’t allow the band’s look (see photo at bottom) deceive you. This band isn’t looking to share their time mulling over imported tea and biscuits; this Darkentries crew is instead looking to dominate a Metal genre and kick your eardrums into submission. Cool.

Darkentries plays at such a potent level of Post-Sludge Extreme and their Metal has an impressive enormous bite; their debut should catapult their career both among the underground dwellers and those above that know better. That’s my Metal assessment, anyways. Dig it? I sure dig Darkentries. Metal be thy name. – Stone

5 Metal Fists Out Of 5!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall5

MICHAEL SCHENKER & FRIENDS Blood Of The Sun will be releasing on April 22, 2014, in North America, via Germany’s Collectors Dream Records. This is a 14 song compilation of Rock’s storied classics, including 2 instrumentals, courtesy of the iconic guitarist Michael Schenker!

Michael Schenker’s “Friends” are a roll-call of 12 Rock, Hard Rock and Metal luminaries! From Michael’s long-time vocalist Gary Barden, to Sebastian Bach, with Paul Di’Anno in-between, this compilation of Classic Rock cover songs gives me the ostrich bumps all over my arms and face, each time I listen to it! This album is Classic Rock ‘N Metal 101, my fellow Metal brethren and Rockaholics!

It is only fitting that this album has come together, with Michael Schenker sharing the stage and studio with a list of who’s who throughout his epic musical career. To my ears and Rock ‘N Roll senses, Michael Schenker has undeniably molded these Rock classics into his very own, with a little help from his friends! From Pink Floyd’s Money to Black Sabbath’s War Pigs, these classics are celebrated to the highest degree of vocal and musical excellence! Tim “Ripper” Owens essentially kills it, on the cover of War Pigs. Whoa!

Michael Schenker magically allows his Dean Flying V guitar to do all the talking for him and each vocalist featured here sounds nothing short of terrific! The guitar tones of Michael Schenker are forever entrenched in the minds and souls of his countless fans; any fan of this guitar icon should be pleased by what they hear, on this album. This compilation defines Michael’s uniqueness and (improvisation-like) studio creativity, which has had him stand out among his peers for decades.

If I have come across as spellbound by this compilation from Michael Schenker & Friends, there is plenty of solid reasoning. I grew up listening to Michael Schenker, along with each and every vocalist here, from Joe Lynn Turner to Tim “Ripper” Owens and I immensley appreciate each and every one of their respective talents. Truth be told, this album is about Rock, Hard Rock and Metal coming together as one impressive Classic Rock family. Metal be thy name. – Stone

MALPRACTICE – Finnish Progressive/Thrash Act Signs With Sensory Records

As they continue to investigate the progressive realms of the Heavy Metal universe, New Jersey-based Sensory Records confirms that Finnish quintet, MALPRACTICE, has become the newest addition in the label’s roster.
Formed in 1994 in Kouvola, Finland by guitarist, Joonas Koto, MALPRACTICE started out as a thrash act. Following the release of self-financed debut MCD, Memorial, in 1996, the band cast aside their most aggressive influences and opted to explore a more progressive direction, which was apparent on their second MCD, Frozen, released later the same year. Without a deal in place, MALPRACTICE recorded an album’s worth of material in March 1998, which became their first full length album, Of Shape And Balance, released via Mastervox Records in September of that year.

Following a brief hiatus, and reactivation in 2004, MALPRACTICE signed with Spinefarm/Universal. This also began the band’s cooperation and friendship with producer/engineer, Anssi Kippo at Astia Studio (Children of Bodom, Sinergy, Norther, etc.), with the recording of their second full-length, Deviation From The Flow, and into the 2008 release of their third album, Triangular, which not only expanded their forward-thinking style, also reinvigorated some of their early thrash elements.

In 2010 the band self-produced their own outstanding demo, which eventually became their fourth album, Turning Tides. As their contract with Spinefarm was expired, the band sought new pastures, and given the more melodic and progressive nature of their style, found solace in Laser’s Edge offshoot, Sensory Records, who is now preparing Turning Tides for proper worldwide release this Summer.

Turning Tides represents MALPRACTICE at their absolute best, combing intricate Progressive Metal with catchy melodies topped with excellent musicianship and brilliant vocal harmonies, and a must-hear for fans of Queensryche, Fates Warning, Dream Theater and Megadeth.

Final release details on Turning Tides will be released in the near future.

MALPRACTICE:

Joonas Koto – guitars
Toni Paananen – drums
Aleksi Parviainen – vocals
Markus Vanhala – guitars
Jonas Mäki – bass
