GRIM REAPER – Released back in 1985, on RCA Records, Fear No Evil (the second studio album) from the UK’s Grim Reaper is a Metal classic worth revisiting time and again. Grim Reaper is as legit a member of the NWOBHM as any of their peers; the only unfortunate drawback is our Metal community has just 3 studio albums to savor from them.
Nonetheless, Fear No Evil may very well be the best of the lot from Grim Reaper. With a no-nonsense approach to production, all the unnecessary bells and whistles are not present on this album; making it for an Old School Metal gem from a decade that produced unparalleled and gilt-edged Metal history.
Fear No Evil plays along so grand, I’d swear this album should be on (at least) my “Top 100 Metal Albums Of All-Time” list. That’s if I actually took the time to write-up such a head-scratching list! Maybe someday I shall embark on such a Metal venture. Whoa.
Grim Reaper (for those of you unfamiliar) is a band that would fit right in at a Metal festival with Witch Cross, Satan, Angel Witch, Raven, Crystal Viper, Venom… you must get the Metal point by now! This is a band that didn’t get much airplay in my neck of the woods as a teen, back in those glorious Metal 80’s; save for the title track from their 1984 debut album: See You In Hell. Regardless, after that said debut album, I had already anointed Grim Reaper as Metal legends.
I can’t lie, not every song on Fear No Evil is killer, with Rock And Roll Tonight being the sore thumb. It’s not as if this is a terrible song, not at all, it just doesn’t seem to “fit in” with the total Metal package that Fear No Evil is all about. This is an album that screams spikes, keg parties for the seasoned pros, biker rallies and of course… denim and leather. Get this Metal classic, Fear No Evil, from Grim Reaper if you haven’t yet; you’ll be wishing this band made ten more albums just like this one. Metal be thy name.
