Savage Land is the forthcoming debut full-length from death metal perpetrators, GRUESOME. Featuring within their bestial ranks members of Exhumed, Possessed, Malevolent Creation and Derketa, GRUESOME is a supergroup of sorts paying homage to the game-changing sounds of Death’s early recordings.
GRUESOME was borne out of guitarist/vocalist Matt Harvey (Exhumed) and drummer Gus Rios’ (Malevolent Creation) mutual involvement with the Death To All tours – Harvey serving as frontman for the original nine-member mini-tour and Rios performing “Baptized In Blood” and working with DTA drummer Sean Reinert on the following US tour where Exhumed filled in as support on a several dates.
After discarding the idea of putting together another incarnation of DTA to focus exclusively on Death’s first two albums, Harvey half-jokingly suggested writing their own songs in that vein. It wasn’t long before the idea gained traction, and the “band” had five songs written. Rios later recruited Possessed guitarist Daniel Gonzalez and Derketa bassist Robin Mazen to record the material in Florida.
The result is the eight scathing tracks contained on Savage Land. Recorded by Rios and Gonzalez at Riversound Studios in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, mixed by Jarrett Pritchard at Mana Studios in St. Petersburg, Florida and including a guest guitar solo on “Closed Casket” by James Murphy as well as cover art by legendary illustrator Ed Repka (Death, Megadeth, Massacre, Athiest et el), Savage Land is a truly gruesome slab of late-’80s/early-’90s Florida-styled Death Metal.
Set for release next month, today team GRUESOME offers up fourth track “Hideous” for communal absorption. The track is based on 1932 horror film, Freaks, in which the characters were played by people who worked as carnival sideshow performers and had real deformities. The original version was considered too shocking to be released, and no longer exists.
Rios further elaborates, “‘Hideous’ was one of the last songs to be written for the album. By that point Matt had really hit a stride with the writing and this song turned out to be one of our favorites! It seamlessly blends influences from the first three Death albums with even a tiny tip of the hat to Human. Listen closely after the solo section…you’ll swear it’s 1988 for real! We sincerely hope that everyone enjoys this as much as we did creating it! Hail Chuck [Schuldiner]!”
Sample “Hideous” via SoundCloud HERE or YouTube HERE.
Tragically, there will never be any truly new Death material, but GRUESOME is humbly determined to keeping the band’s classic sound alive as faithfully as possible. Savage Landwill be released in North America via Relapse Records on April 21st, 2015, April 17th in Germany, Benelux and Finland and April 20th in the UK, rest of the world on CD and digitally. For preorders scroll on over to THIS LOCATION. Digital preorders are available via iTunes HERE and the GRUESOME BandCamp page HERE.
CRITICAL PRAISE:
“The turning inside out of Death’s first two albums is in good hands here.” – Decibel Magazine
“Absolutely kick-ass in its own right, but also an authentic form of homage to Death.” – No Clean Singing
On March 3rd, 1973 – England’s legendary SLADE reaches #1 in the UK with their hit song: Cum On Feel The Noise. I remember never knowing that SLADE originally wrote and recorded this song, until I heard the Quiet Riot cover version on Metal Health, back in 1983. I remember some DJ on WHCN, WCCC or WPLR (FM) up in Connecticut, speaking about the history of this song, when it first released. Good times.
On this day in 1979 – The great Foreigner is at #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with their hit song: Blue Morning, Blue Day. Written by Lou Gramm and Mick Jones, this song is featured on Foreigners amazing second studio album, from 1978: Double Vision. The Double Vision album is my favorite of all Foreigner albums! I remember receiving Double Vision as a birthday gift from my mother, back in January of 1979. God rest her loving soul.
On March 3rd, 1986 – The mighty METALLICA released their third studio album: Master Of Puppets. This happens to be my favorite METTALICA album of all-time! This is THE studio album, that without a doubt, launched METALLICA into the legendary stratosphere of Thrash Metal and ALL of Metal!
Master Of Puppets raised the Metal bar for ALL other Thrash Metal bands too. Unfortunately, this would be the last studio album that features classic member, co-songwriter and bassist Cliff Burton. Man I love this Master Of Puppets album! Battery!! Rest in peace, Cliff Burton.
On this day in 1990 – Warrant reaches #20, on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with their hit song: Sometimes She Cries. This song is featured on Warrant’s debut studio album, from 1989: Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich. I remember buying the album on vinyl and I later bought it (used) on cassette; this way I was able to listen to it in my car. Good times. Rest in peace, Jani Lane.
On March 3rd, 2015 – Nickelback – The Best Of Nickelback: Volume 1 moves up five notches and is sitting at #15 on the Billboard Hard Rock Albums Chart. This greatest hits has spent 57 weeks on this chart, peaking at #2. Long live Nickelback!
On this day in 2015 – It’s Nickelback again, sitting at #2 on the Billboard Hard Rock Albums Chart, with their eighth studio album: No Fixed Address. This album moved up from being last week’s #4 and has spent 14 weeks on this chart. Whoa!
“From the very beginning I was fascinated by Frets On Fire (PC) and Guitar Hero (game console). I always wondered how hard such a game could be, while spending hours in front of the goggle-box. This is why we came up with the idea to create our Frets On Fire – Nothgard Songs. Just because we thought this would be fucking cool. Now we have 2 songs from our latest record to download.
On February 3rd, Decadent, the fifteenth studio album from Germany’s legendary U.D.O. was released, via AFM Records. I’ll readily admit that this is one of the finest U.D.O. albums ever, with what I consider a whole lot more melodic interplay going on between the guitars and rhythm section. My favorite song on Decadent is Mystery and it’s a melodic Heavy Metal classic already, in my Metal world. This entire Decadent album sounds classic to me and makes for a formidable follow-up to 2013’s Steelhammer studio album.
Drummer Franceso Jovino is an awesome presence on Decadent and has since parted ways with the band. Udo Dirkschneider’s son and band drum tech, Sven Dirkschneider, has since been hired on as the new drummer.
As with AC/DC and Motörhead, fans of U.D.O. are gonna know what they’ll get from this band. With that said, there is a more open spaced vibe about Decadent than previous U.D.O. albums; where the songs sound as if they’ve been crafted for a more widespread consumption of Heavy Metal fans. No worries, this new U.D.O. album is no commercial ticket to Hollywood’s good old boys club. The big guitar sounds on this album are equivalent to an endless bottle of psyche-you-out elixir!
Below. check out the fabulous song Pain:
There’s more rhythm than crunch on Decadent and the great Udo Dirkschneider sings with an enthusiasm that I noticed quickly from the start; this is not a Heavy Metal legend that is forcing his vocals for the sake of making the record. Udo sings as if he is prepared for a world-wide arena tour and his band shall take a back seat to no one. Honestly, this Decadent album plays out that fantastic. It only takes a couple of thorough listens to Decadent for me to realize that Udo Dirkschneider is not interested in resting on any Metal laurels. I respect that to the fullest!
Throw in the fact that all twelve songs are worthy of their own music video and I do declare this being an album of SONGS. Decadent is a grand example of how a Heavy Metal band should leave all the artificial flavors and fillers behind and focus on composition and lyrics. The title track, Pain, Secrets In Paradise, Under Your Skin and Untouchable are five other standout songs that really soar for my Metal soul. Very well done, once again, U.D.O.! Metal be thy name – Stone.
U.D.O. is very proud to present our new tour keyboarder Harrison Young. The band is currently rehearsing for the tour. Harrison already became fix part of the U.D.O. family and everybody is highly motivated to kick ass on tour. This is the best U.D.O. ever with a great NEW setlist!!!!
Harrison Young is a singer, multi-instrumentalist, and audio producer from just outside of New York City, currently living in the Netherlands. In addition to touring and recording with his own two bands, Earth Minor and The Harrison Young Quartet, he has also appeared on numerous albums including Metal Queen Doro Pesch’s latest release, “Raise Your Fist” and NYC Hip Hop Legend Talib Kweli’s album Gutter Rainbows, for which Harrison provided the iconic piano riff on the #1 iTunes single, Cold Rain.
For the past several years, Harrison has been touring the world with Doro as her keyboardist, appearing at festivals like Wacken, Graspop, and Sweden Rock, in addition to countless headline shows everywhere from Los Angeles to Moscow. In 2013, he sang the official anthem of the inaugural Full Metal Cruise alongside Doro in front of hundreds of thousands of people, at Hamburg Germany’s 824th Harbor Celebration.
He also recently released a new album with his long time rock band, Earth Minor entitled Across The Atlantic In Record Time, which is now available worldwide at his website, www.harrisonyoungmusic.com.
Harrison is thrilled to join the U.D.O. team as of this upcoming European tour and looks forward to rocking with you in your city.
The spectacular new U.D.O. studio album, Decadent, is available now! Decadent was released via AFM Records, back on February 3rd, in North America.

DARK BEAUTY – There are a host of music genres that New Jersey’s Dark Beauty can be attributed to, from Symphonic Metal to Gothic, with Classical being the omnipotent glue that gives Dark Beauty their overall musicality. Dark Beauty released their new studio concept album, Fall From Grace, on August 19th, 2014. Lead vocalist (coloratura soprano), songwriter and band founder, Liz Tapia, has an alluring voice; even her shades of vocal darkness is mesmerizing.
As a songwriter, Liz Tapia can already rival that of Trans-Siberian Orchestra’sPaul O’Neill. Seriously. Greatness is not always mainstream or screaming from the pages of Rolling Stone and Dark Beauty’s musical greatness profoundly exists. Liz Tapia has assembled a consummate band of musicians with Dark Beauty, in my straight Metal opinion. I am absolutely thrilled that Dark Beauty has crossed my Metal path. Music is a powerful voice and universal language within our Universe; Dark Beauty easily reminds me of this.

Metal Odyssey Headquarters – My pup Ozzy (above) isn’t kidding, it’s been 6 years! It is March 1st, 2015 and it’s the 6 year anniversary of Metal Odyssey. Whoa! Shut the front door! Gather the villagers! My, how fast 6 years can fly by! Metal Odyssey was launched back on March 1st, 2009 (MMIX).
Back in 2009, The Walking Dead and Finding Bigfoot were not on television yet. Wow! In 2009 a pound of bacon cost $3.19 and a U.S. postage stamp cost 42 cents. Unreal! Six years ago, after an eleven year wait, the iconic KISS released a new studio album:
KISS Sonic Boom was released on October 6th, 2009.
__________________________
During 2009 I was new to the blogosphere, thus I used about 200 or more “tags” with every post that was published on Metal Odyssey. I was such a nerd. Oops. I still am. Um, anyhow, take a look for yourself, as to how “tag crazy” I once was:
After 6 years with Metal Odyssey in my Metal life, I’ve learned quickly that there is always room for improvement and I don’t know everything. There are no laurels to rest on here. Each day I am grateful that other humans actually visit Metal Odyssey and hopefully it brings some kind of Metal joy to their lives; as Metal Odyssey has brought immeasurable Metal joy to mine. My love for Metal and Rock ‘N’ Roll hopefully shows, throughout these past 6 years of Metal Odyssey.
I thank every visitor (both random and loyal) and each subscriber to Metal Odyssey; you are ALL the reason why Metal Odyssey’s Metal wheels keep moving. To ALL the kick-ass Twitter followers, you RULE too! Each respective PR agency, PR rep, record label, musician and band I tremendously applaud for delivering to me the invaluable promotional materials and/or insight that are so necessary in the proper execution of Metal Odyssey. You ALL know who you are and you ALL ROCK!
I placed the Witch Cross Axe To Grind album cover (above) for the reason that I can.
I especially thank Nilla, Scott Coverdale, Megy, Sara, Kev Moore, my guardian Metal angels, WordPress.com and my fellow blogging peers for any and all support, these past 6 years. Metal Be Thy Name!
Avenged Sevenfold self-financed their own mobile role-playing fantasy video game called Deathbat, partnering with Subscience Studios. Deathbat is available for iOS and Android devices. The Hail to the King: Deathbat original video game soundtrack was created by Avenged Sevenfold.
If you love mobile video games, the Castlevania (or the like) video games, trying out something different on the scary and inspirational spectrum of music and/or love Avenged Sevenfold, then this video game soundtrack is for you. It’s all instrumental songs coupled with 8-bit music and I bought it off of iTunes. It is an entertaining listen!
Bringing to life this Deathbat soundtrack and making it available for purchase was a grand idea from Avenged Sevenfold. Ten songs fused with dark/fantasy video game sounds and atmospheres of Deathbat is, in my Metal opinion… Metal. This soundtrack was released on January 27th, 2015, via Warner Bros. Records. Metal be thy name.
Hail to the King: Deathbat mobile video game is available from the App Store and Google Play.

Crowquill Records is pleased to announce that they will be releasing the debut EP of CODAS, the post-metal project from Mario Quintero of Sleep Lady and Spotlights. The EP, which is titled Currents, is projected to be released in the spring of 2015.
Currents will consist of 4 tracks and is recommended for fans of bands such as Jesu, Nadja and Old Man Gloom.
Label CEO BJ Dierkes had the following to say about the signing:
“Codas is one of those projects that comes along out of nowhere and just kicks you right in the gut. Their debut EP “Currents” hits a sweet spot across an entire spectrum of influences and genres that have been masterfully melded together. This stuff is on a whole other level, and we’re stoked to be working with them.”
The label has released a teaser trailer for the album which can be viewed below or at this location:
Codas is the solo project from New York-based Mario Quintero of Sleep Lady and Spotlights. A year after relocating from San Diego, CA, Codas began as an experiment in not over thinking things, as well as not being concerned with any specific sound or genre. Their debut EP “Currents” (Crowquill 2015) displays elements of post-rock, noise, and even the math-ier side of 90s post-hardcore, laced with influences of industrial, doom, and black metal.

Frontiers Music SRL is honored to present a special tribute album conceived by iconic Grammy Award winner and founding member of Ides of March, Survivor and Pride of Lions, Jim Peterik, featuring an impressive array of guest musicians. The CD, titled “Torch: The Music Remembers Jimi Jamison and Fergie Frederiksen”, will be limited to 500 copies, to be sold exclusively at the Frontiers Rock Festival II, held at the LIVE MUSIC CLUB in Trezzo sull’Adda in Milan, Italy on April 11 and 12th, 2015.
Just as the musical influence of Dennis “Fergie” Frederiksen (of Le Roux, Angel, Toto, Frederiksen /Phillips, Mecca and Frederiksen/Denander) and Jimi Jamison (of Target, Cobra and Survivor) reverberated inside the melodic rock community, news of their passing within months of one another in 2014 sent waves of disbelief and sorrow throughout the brotherhood of singers, songwriters and musicians who had been touched by their talent and their spirit. The loss so profoundly impacted Peterik’s core that it was difficult at first to imagine a universe in which their lights no longer shined. After filtering his grief through the cathartic process of songwriting, Jim found solace by gathering a group of mutual friends to commemorate their departed comrades the only way they knew how – with music.
Peterik recently produced and co-wrote the debut album “Risk Everything” to introduce the world to the stunning, 5-octave tenor of singer Marc Scherer, who will appear onstage with headliners Pride of Lions at the Frontiers Rock Festival II. Scherer is a featured performer on Torch: The Music Remembers Jimi Jamison and Fergie Frederiksen, along with stars like Dave Bickler of Survivor, Kelly Keagy of Night Ranger, Bill Champlin of Chicago, David Pack from Ambrosia, Mike Reno of Loverboy, Bobby Kimball of Toto, Bruce Gaitsch of Chicago, Alessandro Del Vecchio of Hardline and Ricky Phillips of Styx.
As Peterik explains, ‘Hopefully, these songs and heartfelt performances will bring healing to all those suffering losses in their lives, as well as serve as a celebration of life itself.’
The album is comprised of four new songs and six alternate versions of previously recorded numbers, (never before heard in Europe), along with seven classics distilled from Jimi and Fergie’s most recent releases on the Frontiers label.
Passionate and intensely personal, this collection speaks to the heart of anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one. Torch: the Music Remembers Jimi Jamison and Fergie Frederiksen [Fergie Frederiksen (Official Fan Page)] resists the temptation to wallow in sadness, choosing instead to joyously celebrate two beautiful souls who made the world a better place through the transcendent, healing power of song.
