THIRD ION – Prog Metal outfit THIRD ION, featuring former members of THE DEVIN TOWNSEND BAND and INTO ETERNITY, has announced that the band’s new vocalist is none other than Dave Padden (ex-ANNIHILATOR)! Padden replaces departed vocalist Tyler Gilbert. The band issued the following statement about the lineup change:
“Sadly, after our last gigs, our singer Tyler informed us he was leaving the band. We loved having him, but his heart and passion lie with his own music. We wish him all the best and good luck with his future! Right away we wasted no time and got right on the search for a new singer. Dave’s demo blew us away, and not to mention he has an incredible amount of experience! We have been sitting on this news since the summer and after getting back from Vancouver this week, with a finished album worth of vocal tracks, I am absolutely psyched to announce Dave Padden as the singer for Third Ion!”
THIRD ION are currently recording the follow-up to 2015 Glasstone Records debut album 13/8bit. The sophomore effort will also be released on Glasstone. An audio clip of the band recording with Padden can be heard at this location or below:
13/8Bit is available on CD format through the label and in digital format on iTunes.Album artwork comes courtesy of Harley K at Necrographix. The album is streaming on Spotify HERE. 13/8Bit can be purchased on iTunes, Amazon, Base, and other online retailers.
THIRD ION is the product of a mutual love of prog, video games and science. The debut album was written entirely in 13/8 time signature. 8-Bit musical renditions of every song was released as well, to pay homage to their 1980s classic gaming inspirations.

Standing Ovation. That melting pot of musical styles, the shimmering red blast furnace, the catalyst of the industrial revolution, the seismologist’s worst nightmare. Once again will the tectonic plates rip apart and the Earth’s magnetic poles will switch places when the band releases their next album which is titled “Gravity Beats Nuclear”.
The album title refers to the creation of all life – Gravity. Without this, no stars would have ever been born and hence no life either. Although the album deals with powerful themes of life, the familiar trademark of twisted humor is once again included with a pinch of science fiction.
The musical extremes are widened further and once more, it’s a roller-coaster ride which you hop on blindfolded not knowing what surprises there will be around the corner. And last but not least, has the coating been decorated by much richer melody frosting.

NEW YORK – Coheed and Cambria have revealed the cover and track list for their forthcoming album, The Color Before The Sun (Oct. 9, 300 Entertainment).
The cover, which features a serene lake with a house disintegrating into the sky, was created by Nick Steinhardt (Touche Amore, Deafheaven) and reflects the story behind the ten-song album.
While the most conceptually abstruse Coheed records have always had a foundation in reality, The Color Before The Sun marks the first time Claudio Sanchez is exposing his raw feelings, narrated from his own perspective – the anxiety of fatherhood, the disorienting feeling of losing a home, the reflections had during early morning walks. His own story is told through big, bright, driving, colorful songs that beam like power-pop, crunch like vintage ‘90s emocore and float with the expansive feel of space-rock.
Sanchez’s journey is captured not only in the music, but also in a limited edition, deluxe box set available for pre-order as of this morning at www.coheedandcambria.com. The extensive collection offers fans two hardcover books: one featuring album lyrics and expansive artwork from The Color Before The Sun, while a separate book documents the events and emotions of the time with prose and photographs. Four different pieces of music are housed in the die-cut slipcase: The Color Before The Sun (CD), The Color Before The Sun demos (CD), an in-studio DVD and a clear 7-inch with two non-album demo tracks. Purchasers also receive an instant download of “You Got Spirit, Kid,” a membership card, a custom house key, a lapel pin, a certificate of authenticity; as well as exclusive, members-only access to new music, videos, concert tickets, merchandise and commentary from the band.
The Color Before The Sun – Track List:
1. Island
2. Eraser
3. Colors
4. Here To Mars
5. Ghost
6. Atlas

Last year, former Def Jam and Warner Music Group recorded music chief Lyor Cohen along with colleagues Todd Moscowitz (ex-Warner Bros president) and Kevin Liles (ex-EVP Warner Music) unveiled 300 Entertainment, a new record label focused on artist development, flexible deal structures, and technology-based partnerships. 300 Entertainment is a platform not only for artists, but also entrepreneurs by giving them access to tools and knowledge to remain independent and to be active participants in their artists’ development.
Fans of progressive metal are offered a real treat when Simulacrum release their new concept album, Sky Divided through Inverse Records on the 28th of August 2015. The artwork is by Jan Yrlund, who has worked with such artists as Manowar, Stratovarius & Sirenia and the cover portrays the post-apocalyptic mood of the album’s title track. The album is a hefty 62 minutes long and the track list is as follows:
Timelapse (02:50)
Behind The Belt Of Orion (05:32)
Broken (05:51)
Embrace The Animal Within (05:00)
Deep In The Trenches (05:25)
The Abomination (10:57)
Sky Divided (05:50)
Enter Hyperion (06:01)
A New Beginning (14:19)
To support the album, Simulacrum has tons of material packed away and it will be released every couple of weeks through the band’s website, social media and webzines. There will be two big budget music videos, multicam live video recordings from Turku Klubi, a teaser of the songs and making-of video snippets. Follow the band at www.simulacrum.fi and www.facebook.com/simulacrumofficial.
As Laser’s Edge division, Sensory Records, prepares to release KINGCROW‘s sixth full-length studio recording, Eidos, the album’s cover artwork, track listing and additional details have been revealed.
Following the success of their In Crescendo album released through Sensory in February 2014, Rome, Italy based progressive metal sextet, KINGCROW, returns with Eidos, a conceptual album about choices, consequences, dealing with regret and disillusion. As their Phlegethon album dealt with childhood, and In Crescendo about the end of youth, Eidos can be considered the third part of a trilogy about the path of life. Musically it sees the band exploring new territories and pushing the extremes of its complex soundscape with a darker atmosphere and a more progressive attitude.
Eidos was recorded at Sound Under Pressure in Rome, with the production handled by Diego Cafolla and Thundra Cafolla. Several guest appearances help create the album’s new atmospheres, including saxophone provided by Stefania Bentivoglio on the track, “Slow Down,” and piano by Fred Colombo of Spheric Universe Experience for the track, “The Deeper Divide.” Mixed by Giampiero Ulacco and mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music in New York, the stunning production of the album is matched by visionary artwork by Cristian Nastasi/Devilnax. With over an hour of new material, Eidos is the next logical progression in the evolution of KINGCROW, and will open the next doorway for whatever lies ahead.

Sensory Records, who also released KINGCROW‘s In Crescendo album, will unveil Eidos worldwide on June 23rd. Music from the album and new tour dates will be announced in the coming weeks.
April 17, 2015, Washington, D.C. – Periphery, who are about to embark on the second leg of their North American tour dates in support of the Juggernaut albums, premiere “The Bad Thing” video today via Billboard:
Jeff Holcomb directed the clip, which features a montage of live footage from the DC-based prog-metal outfit’s early 2015 tour. Drummer Matt Halpern explained to Billboard, “We thought that a live performance for ‘The Bad Thing’ video was a great way to show the intensity of the song and to show our direct expression of how it makes us feel on stage.”
Periphery released Juggernaut: Alpha and Juggernaut: Omega simultaneously in late January via Sumerian Records, with the pair of releases landing at #22 and #25 on Billboard’s Top 200 (#15 and #16 on the Top Albums chart as well as #2 and #3 on Billboard’s Hard Rock Chart).
The band was on recent covers of Revolver and Outburn, who said, “Juggernaut… will most likely change the face of modern progressive metal as we know it.” Metal Sucks called the releases “full-fledged masterpieces” and Rolling Stone dubbed the albums “the group’s most ambitious project yet,” saying it “features some of the band’s most accessible music.”
Periphery begins a new round of North American dates on April 25 at Welcome to Rockville in Jacksonville, Fla. The band joins up with In Flames and All That Remains for a month of dates with stops at Carolina Rebellion, Rock on the Range and Rocklahoma interwoven.

Washington, D.C. – Periphery, the DC-based Prog/Metal outfit whose decision to release two albums simultaneously was called “the group’s most ambitious project yet” by Rolling Stone, have been rewarded with two entries on the Billboard Top 200: Juggernaut: Alpha (#22) and Juggernaut: Omega (#25).
“Today marks a monumental moment in Sumerian and Periphery history,” said Sumerian Records’ Founder/CEO Ash Avildsen. “We’re incredibly proud of the progressive approach we took to releasing this body of music from such a progressive group of artists. I couldn’t be more elated about the synergy between Sumerian, Outerloop and Periphery in successfully executing the release of Juggernaut: Alpha & Omega. The band has a true cult following that appreciates their art and they just proved to the world that the Peripherals are only continuing to grow beyond boundaries. “
The two new albums, which have received four-star reviews worldwide, also landed at #2 and #3 on Billboard’s Hard Rock chart.
Periphery drummer Matt Halpern added, “We are absolutely thrilled with the amount of positivity and excitement we’re seeing and receiving for the Juggernaut releases. As a band and as individuals we poured our hearts and souls into these releases, so to have this type of response is truly special. Thank you to those who have taken part in the Juggernaut experience so far… We can’t wait to play these songs live for you!”

Seven Year Storm, the Vancouver-based instrumental Progressive Metal band created by freelance drummer/instructor Sean Lang with added support from guitar-wizard and good friend Dean Lamb (Archspire) is offering fans a FREE song download of ‘Dyatlov’ from ‘Aion I’, the first of two EPs set for release in 2015.
“This is the first single off of ‘Aion I’, entitled “Dyatlov.” It features Dean Lamb of Archspire on lead guitar and I’m proud to finally release it. I’m making it available for free, so please share it around! ‘Aion I’ drops February 24th.”

Dyatlov 4:28
Virtue 4:30
Nazca Lines 5:23
Blue Car Syndrome 6:47
EP Length: 26:08
ABOUT:
Initially never planning to release his music compositions beyond the borders of just song writing, freelance drummer/instructor Sean Lang was urged by his circle of musician friends whom heard his material to take his creativity to the next level.
The outcome is Seven Year Storm, which showcases Lang’s unique sound, music arrangements written entirely by him plus guitarist Dean Lamb (Archspire) whom handles all of the mind-bending guitar leads and solos. Everything comes together into songs that are tight and heavy, melodic and groovy, technical yet memorable.
To get these works of art off the studio floor, Lang launched an Indiegogo campaign (video can be viewed here) to raise the necessary investment to complete the first collection of songs, which will be released in 2015 as two EPs: Aion I and Aion II.
For more info, please visit the following link: www.seanlang.com.
With songwriting that is a progressive, heavy and catharsis, Vancouver, BC’s id. is a multi-layered metal force. Inspired by Sigmund Freud’s theory on the levels of the human psyche, the band’s front line introduction of their subconscious tendencies is unleashed in their debut EP ‘Sagittarius A’ due out Feb 10, 2014.
Written by guitarist Alex Dubreuil with words backed by Jason Pennington, the EP touches on topics such as inner struggle, world views, self-awareness to what’s beyond in outer space.
“We want people to connect with our message and enjoy the diversity of our sound. The music has evolved from quite unstructured abstract ideas to come around to find a comfort zone with no borders.” comments vocalist Jason Pennington.
Employing a style that is different compared to other progressive bands, id. transcend genres in their four track debut, which features Vancouver Metal scene veterans lyricist and vocalist Jason Pennington (Makaria), drummer Kris DeBoer (Grudge, Infernal Majesty, Artep), rhythm guitarist Tyson Araszewski (AutumnEx) and guitarist Alex Dubreuil (My Own Chaos) who also does bass on the EP.
With more songs in their arsenal for a full length to follow their EP and influenced by bands such as Opeth, Mastodon, Devin Townsend, Gojira, and Augury, id is sharing with metallers what’s to come as they push forward to put themselves on the map.
Band Fact: The story behind the EP Title: ‘Sagittarius A’ is the name of the black hole in the center of our galaxy. The idea comes from a fundamental belief in a scientific world view, free of religious influence and tyranny. It outlines how people are susceptible to believe things without evidence if it appeals to their vanity, as opposed to being presented with evidence and being able to accept something that is inherently contradictory to their intuition.
San Francisco – ISIS reissue a remastered version of Oceanic, the band’s 2002 album, on Nov. 4th via Ipecac Recordings.
Oceanic was Terrorizer’s album of the year for 2002 and in a multi-page “Hall of Fame” article discussing the influence of the nine-song release, Decibel Magazine said “Unlike Celestial’s outright anger and brutality, Oceanic was expansive, inviting and in many respects, the opposite of its forebearer. Surely, it was still Isis, for Aaron Turner’s howl and the group’s undulating tumult still played a significant role in how they communicated, but the collective had aged, learned to open up and, as you will learn, smoked Boston out of its reefer reserves. With tracks like opener ‘The Beginning and the End,’ the body/mind-moving ‘False Light’ and the exceptional ‘Weight’ —with Maria Christopher’s fey voice leading the despondent charge— Oceanic was, for all intents and purposes, a sea change moment for Isis.”
“With the Oceanic remaster I feel we’ve saved the best for last,” explained drummer Aaron Harris. “The clarity that’s been revealed in these songs was surprising even to me. I’ve heard these songs probably thousands of times. When I listened to the remastered version of “Weight” it was like I was back in the studio recording the song. I also noticed a lot of new detail in Jeff’s bass guitar, and energy in the guitars. I know Oceanic is a favorite among fans, and I think this remaster will bring a new appreciation even to those who have heard it many times.”
A Soundcloud stream of the remastered version of “The Beginning and the End” is available here:
The band, in partnership with Ipecac Recordings, has previously reissued re-mastered versions of Celestial, Panopticon and Temporal. Mika Jussila remastered Oceanic and artwork revisions were handled by Aaron Turner.
ISIS’ final studio album was Wavering Radiant, which was released in the spring of 2009. The group disbanded in 2010.
OHHMS will flower into life with their sprawling, crushing debut LP, Bloom, this October via London-based Holy Roar Records.
This in, directly from the heads of the label on the addition of OHHMS to their roster:
“Whilst it could potentially sound disheartening to some, only one previous band has ever eventually ended up working with Holy Roar simply by sending us music. That band was Throats. The second band to end up part of the family in this manner is what you have in front of you here, right now. OHHMS.”
With just two tracks clocking in at a massive thirty-two minutes, OHHMS fuses elements of doom, post-metal, prog and psychedelia in stunning clarity and power thanks to Ian Sadler at Emeline Studios and Brad Boatright at Audiosiege mastering. Breathtaking macro minimalistic artwork courtesy of Black Sails Design more than ably demonstrates the concept of both the record and intent of this band. This is nuanced, controlled anger that knows when to lurk in dark recesses, and when to viscerally bare its teeth. If this leaves you none the wiser, then settle in for this undulating auditory journey. In simple terms – this is a new form of mature heavy music that blends elements of doom, post-metal and progressive/post-rock, without ever losing an undercurrent that crackles with a distinct energy. From small seeds…..
Fans of Harvey Milk, Isis, Pallbearer, Slabdragger, Rolo Tomassi at their most serene, as well as progressive and expansive classic rock are advised to get hip to OHHMS‘ output. Holy Roar Records will release Bloom on digital, CD and LP formats on October 6th 2014. View a trailer for the album below and place preorders HERE.

BIO:
A project talked about, envisioned, and anticipated by Justin and Aaron since the day they met, by chance, in mid-2010. A few of the songs have been in the works since shortly after they met, but meeting Mike and getting him on board was the jump-start needed to truly get this band off the ground.
Now with the addition of Tyler on vocals, and the first few songs demoed, everyone is extremely excited about the future of this project and where it could go. Planning is underway for an amazing live show, with an emphasis on minimalism and mood. Every single member of this band comes from a large base of touring and recording experience and plan to use their resources to get this new project on the road and heard by as many people as possible. Plans are already under way to tour Canada and seek label or grant funding to support the tours.

Mike Young – Bass

Mike also loves coffee, cartoons and all things nerdy.

He has been involved in writing, playing and singing music since his childhood, he grew up surrounded by musical relatives in Regina, Saskatchewan. His primary training was of the guitar but he also dwells on piano, bass and harmonica, playing a mix of new-folk songs with soulful vocals. Tyler accepts influences of all sorts; his main influence taps are of Zakk Wylde, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Michael Jackson. Since 2008, Tyler has recorded and released three solo records and has received radio airplay all across Canada.

REDEMPTION is one of the leading Progressive Metal bands in the world today. Formed in 2000 by guitarist / keyboardist / songwriter Nicolas van Dyk, the band features legendary Progressive Metal vocalist Ray Alder of Fates Warning, as well as guitarist Bernie Versailles (Agent Steel), and the phenomenal rhythm section of Chris Quirarte (drums) and Sean Andrews (bass). REDEMPTION‘s combination of heaviness not usually found in Progressive Metal, irresistible melodies and emotional urgency has created a unique and resonant voice for this band that sets them apart from the many clones in the genre, and which has gained them the attention of fans, critics and musicians.
Through the band’s first three studios albums – 2002’s self-titled debut, 2005’s The Fullness of Time, and 2007’s The Origins of Ruin, REDEMPTION gained a loyal fan base and garnered rave reviews worldwide from critics, who describe Redemption’s music as, “one of the best Progressive Metal acts to emerge in the past decade” [DPRP], praised their “magical aura and incredible songwriting” [Blabbermouth], stating, “it’s powerful, catchy, enslaving, technical; it’s the whole bunch” [Lords Of Metal] and having been dubbed, “the new star on the US prog-metal sky” [Squealer Rocks].
REDEMPTION has captivated audiences around the world with their incredible live performances. This was proven on a massive scale in 2008, when the band supported Dream Theater on a five-week North American tour and documenting a headlining show at the tour’s end, entitled Frozen in the Moment, the band returned to the studio to release 2009’s Snowfall on Judgment Day and 2011’s This Mortal Coil.
As they continue to investigate the progressive realms of the Heavy Metal universe, New Jersey-based Sensory Records confirms that Finnish quintet, MALPRACTICE, has become the newest addition in the label’s roster.
Formed in 1994 in Kouvola, Finland by guitarist, Joonas Koto, MALPRACTICE started out as a thrash act. Following the release of self-financed debut MCD, Memorial, in 1996, the band cast aside their most aggressive influences and opted to explore a more progressive direction, which was apparent on their second MCD, Frozen, released later the same year. Without a deal in place, MALPRACTICE recorded an album’s worth of material in March 1998, which became their first full length album, Of Shape And Balance, released via Mastervox Records in September of that year.
Following a brief hiatus, and reactivation in 2004, MALPRACTICE signed with Spinefarm/Universal. This also began the band’s cooperation and friendship with producer/engineer, Anssi Kippo at Astia Studio (Children of Bodom, Sinergy, Norther, etc.), with the recording of their second full-length, Deviation From The Flow, and into the 2008 release of their third album, Triangular, which not only expanded their forward-thinking style, also reinvigorated some of their early thrash elements.
In 2010 the band self-produced their own outstanding demo, which eventually became their fourth album, Turning Tides. As their contract with Spinefarm was expired, the band sought new pastures, and given the more melodic and progressive nature of their style, found solace in Laser’s Edge offshoot, Sensory Records, who is now preparing Turning Tides for proper worldwide release this Summer.
Turning Tides represents MALPRACTICE at their absolute best, combing intricate Progressive Metal with catchy melodies topped with excellent musicianship and brilliant vocal harmonies, and a must-hear for fans of Queensryche, Fates Warning, Dream Theater and Megadeth.
Final release details on Turning Tides will be released in the near future.

BARISHI – Vermont’s BARISHI have just released a self-titled Progressive Metal tour de force that belies conventional thought for a debut album. Heaviness, eclecticism, and inventive melody are just a few of the descriptors one could use to begin dissecting this dynamic package of passion and creativity. The saxophone heard on “Sky Burial” and “Holy Mountain” is but one of the pleasant surprises in an album full of them.
Barishiwas recorded, mixed, and co-produced by the band and BrianWestbrook at PDP Recording, with mastering done by Nick Dragoni at M-Works Mastering Studio. This is one album you simply must experience.
BARISHI is making their mark in the New England Metal scene and beyond. Formed in 2010 as an instrumental three-piece know as Atlatl, they began writing songs influenced by fusion and progressive music. Their style quickly started getting heavier and darker while retaining some progressive influence, thus forging their own style of Heavy Psychedelic Metal. In 2012 they found a wayward vocalist wandering the streets of Keene New Hampshire. Bringing him into the fold they found that his sound melded excellently with theirs. Thus, Barishi was born!
Earth shattering grooves combined with savage vocals completed the sound that could only be born in the verdant mountains of Southern Vermont. With their debut self-titled album on the way, Barishi is truly a force to be reckoned with. Prepare yourself to be pummeled and thunderstruck with ecstatic Metal from the ancient hills of New England.
