Stone says: My favorite Yngwie Malmsteen album is Trilogy, released back in 1986 on Polydor Records. Man, have I ever listened to that album over and over! A beyond memorable album for me. Trilogy inspired me through each major art project I had to create and complete on time, while back in college during the latter 80’s. Good times. Aw, hell, that album still inspires me to this day.

The great Mark Boals is the vocalist on Trilogy; along with brothers Jens (keyboards) and Anders Johansson (drums).

Guitarist Damon Johnson (Black Star Riders/Brother Cane) To Release New Album

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Music, music news, news, rock music, world news with tags , , , , , , on January 18, 2019 by Metal Odyssey

Damon Johnson Kicks Off 2019 With New Release

MEMOIRS OF AN UPRISING

via Double Dragon Records

First Single “Shivering Shivering” Available 1/25

March 8th Album Available for Pre-Order Now

______________________________________

January 18, 2019  – Today, Double Dragon Records reveals the artwork and release date for Memoirs of an Uprising, the self-produced new album from singer/songwriter/guitarist, Damon Johnson. The album is set for release on March 8, 2019 with pre-orders beginning January 25, 2019. Fans who pre-order Memoirs of an Uprising  will receive the album’s debut single, Shivering Shivering, as an instant grat track.  Orders for a limited edition Red Vinyl pressing of the album can be placed here.

After incredible runs with the bands he co-founded, Black Star Riders and 90’s chart toppers, Brother Cane, Damon Johnson found himself in spring of 2018 in a surprising position. Johnson had just completed a coast to coast tour with BSR supporting Judas Priest, as well as select reunion performances with Thin Lizzy, when he realized there were two things he couldn’t stop thinking about; his family and his music. Would 2019 finally be the year Johnson gives full focus to the music he kept hearing in his mind, composing an album, a true collection of songs that represented his personal vision, plus have the final say about his tour calendar? The answer was a resounding, YES!

Johnson explains, “After that Priest tour I was feeling anxious about some things: getting older, where my career would be in 10 years, how much time I was continually spending (mostly in foreign countries) away from my wife and our two youngest kids…plus I was sitting on a near completed solo album of the most honest music I’ve ever made. Ignoring some hard truths could not be a part of my deal anymore.” So Johnson made the decision to part ways with Black Star Riders, finish his album, and start over…this time completely on his own name.

The resulting album, Memoirs Of An Uprising is a collection that is both fierce and diverse – a powerful springboard for the musician to start his next chapter. Collaborating with his longtime friend and songwriter, Jim “Johnny Blade” Troglen, Johnson began assembling a group of songs in divergent tempos and grooves that appealed to his musical side and then laced them with lyrical themes of betrayal and revenge. “The first two songs we put together were “Shivering Shivering” and “Dallas Coulda Been A Beatdown” and I knew we were off to a great start,” says Johnson. Throughout Memoirs Of An Uprising there are musical events that are strictly meant to get bodies moving, like “Dallas…” and “Making Peace With This Wicked Beast.”  There are some truly challenged literary actors in “We Got A System” and “The World Keeps Spinning Round.” When it is suggested that this could be a concept album, Johnson says, “As much as I’d prefer to steer clear of that label, there is no denying these 10 songs can be consumed in one listen and feel like a complete story.”

Listen to sample of the thunderous first single, “Shivering Shivering”  HERE.

Album pre-order is available HERE.

WITHERFALL “Vintage” – New EP Releasing On March 22nd

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, music news, news, rock music, world news with tags , , , , on January 18, 2019 by Metal Odyssey

In November 2018, US dark melodic metal act WITHERFALL released its much-celebrated second studio album, “A Prelude to Sorrow”. Never resting on its laurels, the group led by the creative duo comprised of vocalist Josheph Michael (Sanctuary) and Jake Dreyer (Iced Earth) now announces the “Vintage” CD, LP, and digital release to be available during the upcoming acoustic tour with Sonata Arctica and released via Century Media Records on March 22nd, 2019.

PRE ORDER AT:

http://www.witherfall.com/merch

WITHERFALL reveals:

“During the sessions for “A Prelude to Sorrow” two cover songs were recorded that showed a different side of WITHERFALL, originally intended to be bonus tracks. A dark and somber version of Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers “I Won’t Back Down’ with vocals recorded with Michael Wagener (Metallica, Skid Row) and an epic version of the Helloween classic ‘A Tale That Wasn’t Right’. With the announcement of the “ Sonata Arctica: Acoustic Adventures 2019 w/Witherfall”, it was decided to release these covers along with a few acoustic renditions of favorite WITHERFALL tracks.

Along with new keyboardist Alex Nasla and session percussionist Timbali Cornwell (Smokey Robinson, Earth Wind & Fire ), Joseph Michael, Jake Dreyer and Anthony Crawford retreated to Harmony Recording Studios in Hollywood, CA (Adele, Miley Cyrus) armed with acoustic guitars and bottles of wine to start working on acoustic arrangements for the tour. The sessions were fruitful and two acoustic versions of past WITHERFALL songs were recorded: a medley of ‘Vintage’ and ‘Nobody Sleeps Here…’ (originally on “Nocturnes and Requiems”) and an alternate arrangement of ‘Ode to Despair’. Instead of keeping these as secrets and finally making the rare ‘The Long Walk Home (December)’ also available to an audience outside of Japan, the “Vintage” EP offers a collection of music that shows another dimension of the WITHERFALL sound.”

Mixed and mastered by Chris Zeuss Harris and again featuring artwork by Kristian Wåhlin, “Vintage” will be released as strictly limited, hand-numbered CD digipak, on black and limited coloured vinyl as well as on all digital platforms.

WITHERFALL already have kicked off the presale of “Vintage” at www.witherfall.com/merch whereas the worldwide digital and physical pre-order via Century Media Records starts January 25th. Furthermore, the “Vintage” EP also features new keyboardist Alex Nasla who will join WITHERFALL on the group’s upcoming European tour kicking off March 13th in Oslo, Norway.

LONG LIVE WITHERFALL.

JADED HEART “Devil’s Gift” – A Metal Odyssey Album Review

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, music news, news, rock music, world news with tags , , , , , on January 12, 2019 by Metal Odyssey

JADED HEART – Everytime I listen to this Jaded Heart album, Devil’s Gift, I am uplifted into the high, mystical, powerful and beautiful higher realms of Heavy Metal bliss. This album is so glorious it brings tears to my eyes as I write this line. Yes, it’s one of those albums for me and it happens; I cannot control it. All I can do is let its majestic Metal saturate my Metal soul for eternity.

If you dig Judas Priest, Helloween, Iron Maiden, Metal Inquisitor, DORO and/or Iron Savior, you will be doing yourself proper by buying or streaming this magnificent Jaded Heart album. I suggest BUYING this album on whatever medium you so desire.

Riffs! Riffs! Riffs! There’s so much guitar firepower on this album that it’s insane great! Peter and Masa have that magic going on with their guitars; their tones scream with emotion and I can feel it, man! The backing vocals are wonderful, giving this album and band their Power Metal muscle on top of Power Metal muscles.

Not one average song is on this album. In my Metal opinion, this album is a MUST for every Metal lovers collection of music. Vocalist Johan Fahlberg is top-tier and belongs there. Sonically melodic, powerful and exquisitely written and arranged songs.

Devil’s Gift was released back on March 30th, 2018, via the sensational Massacre Records. There’s no question that this album was one of the very best in Metal for 2018; it’s also one of the very best in Metal, period. My favorite songs: the entire album. Metal be thy name. – Stone

Devil’s Gift – Track List:

  1. Wasteland
  2. The Enemy
  3. Set Free
  4. Scream Of Anger
  5. Tears Of Our World

  8. Story Of My Life
  9. 9. Coming Home

Jason Becker Releases Free Song From When He Was 16 Years Old – Join His Email For The Free Download

Join Jason Becker’s email list and get a FREE download of “Ripping Song” – This was a nice way for Jason to practice his fast playing when he was 16.

Join email list >> https://jasonbecker.fanbridge.com/

Jason Becker’s story is one of brilliance, talent, determination, adversity, and, ultimately, triumph. A child prodigy on guitar, Jason rose to prominence as a teenager when he was one half of the legendary rock guitar duo Cacophony (with his great friend Marty Friedman). After wowing audiences all over the word with his amazing guitar chops and deep compositions, Jason auditioned for—and got—the gig with David Lee Roth, following in the huge footsteps of Eddie Van Halen and Steve Vai. He wrote and recorded the DLR album A Little Ain’t Enough and was poised to take over the rock guitar world when a nagging pain in his leg was diagnosed as ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, a debilitating and fatal condition with a life expectancy of maybe five years. Maybe.

That was 29 years ago.

Jason Becker – Triumphant Hearts (Album Trailer)

Jason did indeed lose the ability to play guitar, walk, talk, and breathe on his own. But he never lost his will to live or his desire to create music. Communicating through a series of eye movements with a system developed by his father, Jason spells out words as well as musical notes and chords. He imparts his musical vision to his team who then can input the notes into a computer, edit the parts to his exacting standards, and then generate charts for session musicians. It is through this amazing process that Jason composes his profoundly beautiful music, rich in melody and counterpoint, brimming with emotion. His inspiring music and life story have been the subject of countless news articles, magazine cover stories, and an award-winning documentary, Jason Becker: Not Dead Yet.

Not only is Jason not dead yet, he’s busier and more prolific than ever, as evidenced by his latest release, Triumphant Hearts. The album’s 14 tracks showcase Jason’s gift for melody and his deep knowledge of classical composition and orchestral arrangement. Many of the guitar parts are performed by a who’s-who of 6-string gods including Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Neal Schon, Steve Morse, Paul Gilbert, Joe Bonamassa and many others. And, in what will absolutely delight his fans, Jason’s amazing guitar playing—recorded in the ’80s and ’90s—graces several tunes.

Jason Becker is unquestionably the sexiest man alive, but he’s also the most positive, upbeat, and inspiring man alive. “I really feel lucky,” says Jason. “I am surrounded by loving people, and I can still make music.”

Jason Becker’s new album Triumphant Hearts was released Dec. 7, 2018.

German Old School Metallers BOOZE CONTROL Releasing ‘Forgotten Lands’ February 22 On Gates Of Hell Records

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, music news, news, rock music, world news with tags , , , , , on January 9, 2019 by Metal Odyssey

German Old School Metal Bashers  BOOZE CONTROL will release Forgotten Lands, their fourth full-length album (fifth release overall) February 22 on Gates of Hell Records.

On their Gates of Hell Records debut Forgotten Lands, Booze Control continue to evolve into classic metal songsmiths with tracks that adopt a more serious tone than previous efforts. Recorded in October 2017 at Overlodge Recording Studio in Harz Mountains, Germany, with Martin Schnella handling engineering duties, Forgotten Lands finds Booze Control successfully bridging the gap between NWOBHM and old-school American and European metal. The band also parlays more serious lyrical content into songs that are filled with spiraling melodies, driving rhythms and catchy vocal lines from Kuri. The band’s songwriting diversity is on display with “Of the Deep” as well as “Attack of the Axeman,” songs that peddle an epic flair with a classic metal foundation.

Formed in 2009 in Braunschweig, Germany, Booze Control came together at the spur of the moment when guitarist/vocalist David Kuri, bassist Steffen Kurth and drummer Lauritz “Lord” Jilge, were asked to assemble a band for a local event. The trio quickly gathered in a local rehearsal room to write songs in preparation for the show, thinking all along the band would be short-lived. But, to their surprise, more gigs followed, as did second guitarist Jendrik SeilerBooze Control started to enjoy their new compositions, which, in comparison to the more technical nature of their previous outfits, was welcome. Soon, their debut EP, Wanted, was released in 2009, followed up by 2011’s Don’t Touch While Running.

However, leading up to the creation of their 2013 album Heavy Metal, Kuri and Jilge had a revelation while watching Iron Maiden’s Beast Over Hammersmith live video. The conviction in which Bruce Dickinson sings, the energy of the band and the charisma they displayed while on stage needed to be followed in Booze Control. Prior, Booze Control was riding the somewhat clichéd boozed-out rock band angle a bit too hard with their first releases. While the songs were there, the delivery wasn’t, so the band made a concerted effort to improve their songwriting and stage presentation for Heavy Metal. They succeeded in doing so, setting them on a path for the ensuing 2016 The Lizard Rider album and their latest and first LP for Gates of Hell Records, Forgotten Lands.

Now ten years into their career, Booze Control has already gone well beyond their humble origins and party-time ethos. Booze Control invites you to take part in their continued evolution on Forgotten Lands.

David Kuri – Guitar / Vocals

Steffen Kurth – Bass

Jendrik Seiler – Guitar

Lauritz Jikge – Drums

Melodic Death/Doom Group COLD COLOURS Celebrate 20th Anniversary With February 22 Release Of ‘Northernmost’

Long running Minnesota Death/Doom band COLD COLOURS celebrate their 20th anniversary in 2019 with the February 22 release of fifth full-length album Northernmost. In recognition of the winter solstice, the album’s first blast of freezing wind comes in the form of a lyric video for new track “Terminal Winter.”

Vocalist/guitarist Brian J. Huebner had this to say about the band’s milestone:

“If 20 years has taught me anything, it’s that you have to believe in what you are doing. No matter how many roadblocks you hit over two decades. I am thrilled that we have ‘Northernmost’ to celebrate 20 years. Our best album so far? Without question, but more importantly, the best representation of who we are and should be. This album is a testament to the chemistry of the band in 2019.”

Long overdue, Northernmost finds COLD COLOURS in top form as they mine the depths of despair on 12 dynamic compositions guaranteed to satisfy devotees, as well as newcomers with a taste for the likes of AMORPHIS, SWALLOW THE SUN, and INSOMNIUM. Recorded and mixed by drummer Mike Andrie, and mastered to perfection by the legendary Dan Swanö at Sweden’s Unisound, Northernmost is nothing short of exquisite. Welcome to 2019; welcome to your Doom!

GATEKEEPER – To Release ‘Grey Maiden’ EP In February

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, music news, news, rock bands, rock music, world news with tags , , , , , on November 30, 2018 by Metal Odyssey

Looking to strike while the iron is hot, Canadian up and coming True Metal force GATEKEEPER will release the Grey MaidenEP on February 22 via Cruz Del Sur Music.

Featuring two brand-new compositions, a cover song and a track re-recorded from their first demo, Grey Maiden picks right up where the band’s acclaimed East Of Sun first full-length left off. The groundswell of support in North America and abroad – including the selling out of the vinyl and CD pressing of East Of Sun within six months – spurred GATEKEEPER to satiate their ever-growing fanbase with a new release.

“We’ve been working harder and faster than ever since all of this started happening,” says guitarist and founding member Geoff Blackwell. “If there’s one thing I’ve learned from spending the past ten-plus years in bands, it’s that momentum is your greatest resource and you’ve gotta pour gasoline on the little fires that pop up in your career.”

According to Blackwell, GATEKEEPER (who are rounded out by vocalist Jean-Pierre, lead guitarist Kenny Kroecher, bassist David Messier and drummer Tommy Tro) has performed more shows in 2018 than all other years of the band combined, which has started to influence their songwriting. While East Of Sun is considered by many fans to get only better with each passing listen, the songs on Grey Maiden are some of the band’s most immediate compositions to date. However, there are some twists afoot.

“The title track might be our best song yet,” notes Blackwell. “It’s got a massive chorus, intricate vocal lines and catchy, pummelling riffs. We re-recorded the song ‘Tale Of Twins’, which is an old favorite that we’ve been playing lately. It’s finally gotten the recording and performance quality that the song deserves! JP did a great job with the singing on this one.

‘Moss’ is a big departure from our other material,” he continues. “It’s a soft, finger-picked acoustic ballad featuring a lilting guitar pattern inspired by traditional folk music with fantasy-tinged lyrics. We also brought in a guest violinist to fill in the gaps. It’s much different than anything else we’ve done, but I think it makes perfect sense for GATEKEEPER. Lastly, we covered an obscure NWOBHM song by a band named TREDEGAR called ‘Richard III’. They’re a very cool, but forgotten band from Wales who had ex-members of BUDGIE in their ranks. They were a very early example of epic metal and we decided that it would be a good match for us. Kenny and I took some liberties with the guitar arrangement.”

GATEKEEPER‘s future plans include a tour of Europe in support of Grey Maiden, including spots on key festivals such as Hell Of Hammaburg, Swordbrothers and Up The Hammers. In addition to more live dates in their home territory of Canada, GATEKEEPER will buckle down and get to work on their second LP, which, according to Blackwell, will feature material contributed by the entire band. But, before the calendar jumps over to 2019, some reflection of 2018 is warranted, a year that saw GATEKEEPER emerge as one of the best new traditional metal hopefuls in recent memory.

“Obviously we all hoped the album would do well and I figured that we’d make a few sales and play some fun shows here and there,” closes Blackwell. “But, I absolutely never expected us to sell out the first vinyl and CD pressing so quickly. That’s the kind of stuff that usually happens to other people. The outpouring of support from our new friends and fans on social media and streaming platforms like YouTube has been huge, too.”

Grey Maiden – Track Listing:

  1. Grey Maiden
  2. Tale Of Twins
  3. Moss
  4. Richard III

Frontiers Music Srl is known for building new bands/projects featuring musicians of outstanding quality and who come from unique backgrounds. After an intense brainstorming session, a dream team of renowned metal musicians including Tim “Ripper” Owens (ex Judas Priest, Iced Earth), Chris Caffery (Savatage, Trans-Siberian Orchestra), Steve DiGiorgio (Testament, Death (Official), etc.) and Mark Zonder (ex Fates Warning, Warlord) was born and put together under the direction of renowned LA-based producer Roy Z. (Bruce Dickinson, Halford, Tribe Of Gypsies).

Called SPIRITS OF FIRE (after the title of one of their songs), the band has completed work on their debut album which is set for release on February 22nd via Frontiers Music Srl. The music can best be described as “classic Priest meets Savatage”.

Guitarist Chris Caffery on his influences for the record and working with Roy Z:

“My influences for writing on this record were the bands that we were and are still in! I wanted to write songs that [Judas] Priest, Savatage, Testament, and Fates Warning fans would like. But, I wanted them to have a personality of their own as well. To give it a vibe that was SPIRITS OF FIRE! I grew up listening to Judas Priest and spent 30 plus years working with Jon Oliva and Paul O’Neill with Savatage and TSO. Many years playing Criss’ music. These influences for me came naturally! Especially because I’m a fan of all of our bands!

This was the first time that I ever worked with Roy and it was so much fun. I have been a huge fan of his work for a long time. He’s written music, played on, and produced some of my favorite metal albums ever. He had a difficult job bringing this all together and I can’t think of anyone that would have been a better producer and co-worker for this album!”

“I always just sing to the song, whatever I feel it should be. It’s like a character thing! I like layers! This music is really perfect for me and in my natural wheel house. I like to sing all over the place and change it up and this all happens on this album. This is just the start of an amazing band, I mean sky is the limit and I actually can’t wait to record the next album, because this one is so great and perfect,” says vocalist Tim “Ripper” Owens.

Drummer Mark Zonder adds about his playing and writing process, “I am the kind of player that plays what I think fits best with the music. With SPIRITS OF FIRE, the music was more aggressive and hard hitting which I really liked. Again, I tried to be very mindful of the song and the vocals, but tried to add parts that were interesting and creative for the listener.”
