On This Day In METAL History – October 24th…

On October 24th, 1964 – The Kinks reach #7 in the U.S. with their Rockin’ single: You Really Got Me. In 1978, this song was featured as a heavier cover version, on the debut and self-titled album from Van Halen.

On this day in 1970 – The Kinks peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with Lola. This Rock classic was The Kinks’ fourth top ten single in the United States.

On October 24th, 2006 – Live To Win, the second solo album from KISS vocalist, guitarist and co-founder Paul Stanley was released. Along with Paul Stanley, John 5 played guitar on this album.

Born on October 24th, 1936 was Bill Wyman. Happy Birthday, Bill! Whoa! Billy Wyman is an English musician, record producer, songwriter and singer; most famously known as being the bassist for The Rolling Stones, from 1962 to 1993. Born on October 24, 1990 was Eric Choi, Drummer for the Detroit-based band We Came As Romans. Happy Birthday, Eric! Yeah! Eric Choi is pictured above, to the far left.

On October 23rd, 1966 – At London’s De Lane Lea Studios, The Jimi Hendrix Experience records their first two songs, Hey Joe and Stone Free.

On this day in 1976 – Led Zeppelin made their U.S. television debut on Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert. Led Zeppelin performed these two timeless songs: Black Dog and Dazed And Confused.

On October 23rd, 1989 – At the Riverside Club in Newcastle, United Kingdom, Nirvana performed their first European concert.

On this day in 1993 – Def Leppard hits #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 with their soft ballad: Two Steps Behind.

On October 23rd, 1995 – Def Leppard earned a spotlight in the Guinness Book of World Records by performing three concerts on three continents in one day. To promote the band’s first greatest hits album Vault: Def Leppard Greatest Hits (1980-1995), they performed at the Cave of Hercules in Tangiers, Shepherd’s Bush London and the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

On this day in 1996 – Rush reaches #5 in the United States with their 16th studio album: Test For Echo.

On October 23rd, 1964 – Robert Trujillo was born. Happy Birthday, Robert! Whoa! Robert Trujillo is famously known as a former bassist for Ozzy Osbourne and current bassist for the mighty Metallica. Robert Trujillo is also a former bassist for Suicidal Tendencies.

BATTLECROSS – Confirms Winter Warriors Headlining Tour Honoring America’s Veterans

Following their originally scheduled support slot on the recently cancelled Machine Head tour, Detroit, Michigan’s BATTLECROSS will be heading back out on the road next month for more than two dozen headlining dates through North America. Dubbed the Winter Warriors tour, the trek will kick off on November 26th in Grand Rapids, Michigan and conclude on December 30th in Worcester, Massachusetts. Support will come from Wretched and War Of Ages.

In honor of the US Armed Forces, this Veterans Day BATTLECROSS will make a limited number of tickets available to VET TIX so that local members of the military may attend a show in their city at no cost. The band will also be donating a portion of the funds generated from sales of a limited edition tour shirt to a local veteran’s charity, and choose a veteran in each market for a VIP experience. On Veteran’s Day (November 11th) fans can nominate a friend or family member who has served our country and share their story and photo, with a member of the military being chosen to win a guitar and more at the end of the tour. On the same day, the band will also bring back merchandise from their first Metal Blade album, Pursuit Of Honor, in their official merch store, with a portion of the proceeds being set aside to benefit the Wounded Warriors Project, a veterans service organization that offers a variety of programs, services and events to wounded veterans of the military following the events of September 11th, 2001.

KAINE – To Reunite With Original Drummer For One-Off Show

Kaine are pleased to announce that they will be reuniting with their original drummer and fellow band founder, Josh Moreton, for their gig at the Owl Sanctuary in Norwich (England) on January 17th, 2015. Current drummer, Chris MacKinnon is unable to make the show due to a family commitment.

Rage commented: “Josh was a very big part of Kaine’s foundation and we spent many hours putting together the songs that would end up on Falling Through Freedom. We also spent hours together jamming in sheds and taking those hard steps to becoming a regular gigging band which we were able to do after two years of solid work. It’s great to be playing with him again for this one show.”

This marks the first time Josh has played with the band in two years. Josh has since been playing drums in Dismanibus and Forged in Black.

Josh added: “I’m looking forward to a fun jam, sharing the stage with some old friends and excellent musicians again. Since then I’ve been working with Dismanibus on a new album. Recently, I’ve joined the Heavy Metal titans Forged in Black and we have our single The Exodus coming out on December 1st that I’m excited about, as it’s a pretty good song. I’ve seen Kaine many times since I left and they’ve gotten pretty tight, so it should be good fun.”

The original Kaine line-up came close to reunion earlier this year with the founding members agreeing to do a show which unfortunately fell through. The line-up for the Norwich show will effectively be reuniting the Falling Through Freedom line-up with the addition of Saxon Davids on guitar. The band will be doing a mixture of new and old material on the night.

On October 22nd, 1969 – Led Zeppelin II was released on Atlantic Records in the UK. This iconic album would go on to sell over 12 million (plus) copies in the United States alone. Led Zeppelin II reached #1 in both the UK and United States. Led Zeppelin II would later unseat The Beatles Abbey Road album from the #1 position in the United States, as well.

On this day in KISSTORY – October 22nd, 1974 – KISS released their second studio album: Hotter Than Hell. This KISS album has been certified Gold by the RIAA.

On October 22nd, 1977 – Foreigner hits #6 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 with their single Cold As Ice. This song is featured on Foreigner’s debut and self-titled album, released in 1977, via Atlantic Records.

On this day in 1982 – It’s Van Halen Day in Worcester, Massachusetts, as the band began a three-night performance at the Worcester Centrum.

On October 22nd, 1990 – Pearl Jam played their first ever concert when they performed at the Off Ramp Café in Seattle, Washington. On this Rock historic night, Pearl Jam went by the band name: Mookie Blaylock.

On this day in 1993 – The future Canadian Prime Minister, Jean Chretien, was interviewed by legendary Rush drummer Neil Peart on Much Music.

On October 22nd, 1996 – Journey released Trial By Fire, their first album in ten years, which went on to peak at #3 on the Billboard 200 album chart. Trial By Fire went on to sell a million copies in the United States. This was the last Journey album with vocalist Steve Perry and drummer Steve Smith.

On this day in 2000 – Pearl Jam performed at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, celebrating the tenth anniversary of their first live performance.

On October 22nd, 2010 – Distributed by Paramount Pictures, Paranormal Activity 2 was released in movie theaters at midnight in the United States, United Kingdom, Mexico, Canada, Poland, Brazil and Ireland. With a budget of 5 million dollars, this horror classic grossed just under 200 million dollars at the box office.

Born on October 22nd, 1945 was the legendary Leslie West. As a founding member, guitarist and songwriter of Mountain, Leslie West helped forge a path of Heavy Rock for other bands to follow. THE CRINN – Return With A New Track, Reveal Artwork For Forthcoming Album ‘Shadowbreather’

Minnesota’s Extreme Metal experimentalists, THE CRINN, have returned with a face melting new track entitled Silent Betrayer!! Little has been heard from the band since the release of their debut full length album, Dreaming Saturn, via Nuclear Blast Records back in 2010. Aside from a few one-off live performances and few and far between social media updates, THE CRINN have been excessively quiet over the last few years.

All that changes with the release of Silent Betrayer, which is taken from their forthcoming album Shadowbreather. Silent Betrayer is now streaming via THE CRINN‘s Bandcamp page, as well as their Official YouTube Channel. The artwork for Shadowbreather has also been revealed and can be seen (below).

Vocalist John Nelson had the following to say about the upcoming release: “It has been a long 4 years since we released our first full length record, Dreaming Saturn, and we are beyond pumped to showcase “Silent Betrayer” from our upcoming album entitled SHADOWBREATHER! The first thing people might notice, contrary to our last release, is that the new album was not formed as a concept. The direction we went with was to write individual songs that are somewhat shorter in length, more in line with our Self-Titled EP. Stylistically we have no rules. We write what comes to us. These songs are a true expression of our experimental nature with a bit of a focus on making our sound meaner and heavier. We really hope you enjoy “Silent Betrayer,” and we will be releasing more news on the album soon!!!”

THE CRINN – Silent Betrayer:

Shadowbreather was recorded at Signaturetone Recording with producer/engineer Adam Tucker. A release date has not yet been set.

2014 also marks a decade of existence for THE CRINN, having formed during August of 2004 in St. Paul, MN. From its inception, the band decided to use an explorative writing style, without concern for genre exclusivity due to their frustration with the average and mundane, breakdown oriented metal scene. Their mixture of technical riffs, off-time grooves and jarring transitions has led to the band being labeled as mathcore, techmetal, techgrind, jazzmetal and even noodlegrind. Fans of THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN and PSYOPUS owe it to themselves to give THE CRINN a listen!

On This Day In METAL History – October 21st…

On October 21st, 1976 – The Who performed their last concert in North America with drummer Keith Moon, at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Canada. The legendary Keith Moon passed away at the very young age of 32, on September 7th, 1978. Rest in peace, Keith Moon.

On this day in 1978 – Frank Zappa is the musical guest and host on Saturday Night Live. Rest in peace, Frank Zappa.

On October 21st, 1989 – Living Colour reaches #31 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with Glamour Boys. This song was Living Colour’s fourth single released from their 1988 debut studio album: Vivid.

On this day in 1995 – Def Leppard reached number two on the U.K. Singles Chart with When Love & Hate Collide. This song would be Def Leppard’s biggest hit in their home country, while only reaching #58 in the United States.

On October 21st, 1997 – The ever charismatic David Lee Roth released his autobiography Crazy From The Heat. Diamond Dave’s autobiography revealed stories about his days in Van Halen and as a solo artist. Rock climbing and stories of his childhood were also covered. Crazy From The Heat also ranked at #13 in Rolling Stone’s The 25 Greatest Rock Memoirs Of All Time.

On this day in 1998 – Alice Cooper filed a lawsuit against KISS, claiming their song Dreamin’ sounded too similar to his band’s iconic hit single I’m Eighteen. This suit would be settled out of court the following year. Dreamin’ is a song from the 1998 KISS studio album: Psycho Circus.

On October 21st, 2006 – Bob Seger sang America The Beautiful before Game 1 of the 2006 World Series at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan. This marked the 102nd Major League Baseball World Series, with the St. Louis Cardinals defeating the Detroit Tigers: 4 games to 1.

On this day in 2006 – Evanescence were at #1 on the U.S. album chart with their second album The Open Door. This release became the 700th #1 album in Billboard, since the chart became a weekly feature, dating back to 1956.

On October 21st, 2011 – Paul Rodgers, famously known as vocalist for Free, Bad Company, The Firm, The Law and Queen + Paul Rodgers, became a Canadian citizen during an hour-long ceremony at Central City Tower in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. Paul Rodgers has been married to former Miss Canada Cynthia Kereluk since 2007.

On this day in 2014 – Slipknot .5: The Gray Chapter is released. This marks the first Slipknot studio album without the late, beloved founding member, songwriter and bassist Paul Gray. This album also marks the first without drummer Joey Jordison. The new drummer’s name has not been revealed. Metal be thy name. Rest in peace, Paul Gray.

Steve Lukather– legendary guitarist for Toto and revered solo artist was born on October 21st, 1947. Happy Birthday, Steve! Whoa! Steve Lukather is also a multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and arranger. A true man of music is Steve Lukather.

ISIS REISSUE “OCEANIC” ON NOV. 4th

RE-MASTERED RELEASE INCLUDES NEW PACKAGING

San Francisco – ISIS reissue a remastered version of Oceanic, the band’s 2002 album, on Nov. 4th via Ipecac Recordings.

Oceanic was Terrorizer’s album of the year for 2002 and in a multi-page “Hall of Fame” article discussing the influence of the nine-song release, Decibel Magazine said “Unlike Celestial’s outright anger and brutality, Oceanic was expansive, inviting and in many respects, the opposite of its forebearer. Surely, it was still Isis, for Aaron Turner’s howl and the group’s undulating tumult still played a significant role in how they communicated, but the collective had aged, learned to open up and, as you will learn, smoked Boston out of its reefer reserves. With tracks like opener ‘The Beginning and the End,’ the body/mind-moving ‘False Light’ and the exceptional ‘Weight’ —with Maria Christopher’s fey voice leading the despondent charge— Oceanic was, for all intents and purposes, a sea change moment for Isis.”

“With the Oceanic remaster I feel we’ve saved the best for last,” explained drummer Aaron Harris. “The clarity that’s been revealed in these songs was surprising even to me. I’ve heard these songs probably thousands of times. When I listened to the remastered version of “Weight” it was like I was back in the studio recording the song. I also noticed a lot of new detail in Jeff’s bass guitar, and energy in the guitars. I know Oceanic is a favorite among fans, and I think this remaster will bring a new appreciation even to those who have heard it many times.”

The band, in partnership with Ipecac Recordings, has previously reissued re-mastered versions of Celestial, Panopticon and Temporal. Mika Jussila remastered Oceanic and artwork revisions were handled by Aaron Turner.

ISIS’ final studio album was Wavering Radiant, which was released in the spring of 2009. The group disbanded in 2010.

NERVECELL – Dubai-Based Death/Thrash Unit To Reissue Psychogenocide Full-Length Via Unique Leader Records In January; Studio Clips + Live Footage Posted

Dubai-Based Death/Thrash assault, and recent Unique Leader signees, NERVECELL, will reissue their critically lauded Psychogenocide full-length next year.

Initially released via Lifeforce Records in 2011, Psychogenocide was produced and engineered by Rami H. Mustafa at Spellbind Studio in Dubai, United Arab Emirates with drums engineered by Joe Haley at Red Planet Studios in Australia, then mixed and mastered by Wojtek and Slawek Wieslawscy at Hertz Studios (Behemoth, Vader, Decapitated) in Bialystok, Poland. The album features a guest vocal appearance by Nile’s Karl Sanders on the song “Shunq (To The Despaired…King Of Darkness)” and reaped mass approval from major media outlets globally.

Metal Hammer championed the band’s, “…thrilling contrast between oriental and musical culture,” furthering that, “these elements don’t collide, they complement each other,” Legacy extolled, “an amazing oriental death-ax and a must have for every Metal hornet,” while The Metal Observer gushed, “it’s quite the quandary to find an even remotely average track on Psychogenocide. NERVECELL‘s latest is a Death Metal album that succeeds in part to its strong focus on memorability and song structure. Things work exceedingly well from start-to-finish…”

Forged in 2000 as one of the first Extreme Metal bands to emerge from Dubai and having toured alongside legendary Metal acts such as Metallica, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Decapitated and Suffocation, NERVECELL are true torchbearers for a Middle Eastern wave of Metal. Female-fronted Israeli Metal project SHIRAN have released a new lyric video for The Child, a track from the Warmer Winter Day EP. Check it below:

SHIRAN will self-release Warm Winter Day on November 15. Created by siren songstress Shiran Avayou and FERIUM guitarist Elram Boxer in 2012, SHIRAN delivers a mixture of hard edged riffs and clean melodic vocals in a Djent Metal style that also culls from Jazz and Blues.

With the help of the other FERIUM members, SHIRAN will be hitting the stage to perform these magnificent songs. Stay tuned! A teaser/rehearsal video for Warm Winter Day track “The Child” can be viewed below:

Devil Down To Be Released This Winter

Phoenix Sludge masters TWINGIANT are set to release their new album Devil Down this winter. Devil Down is the follow-up to their critically acclaimed album Mass Driver and was engineered and mastered by Ryan Butler (Landmine Marathon) at Arcane Digital Recording.

The band had the following to say about the new album:

“We’ll be releasing our 2nd, full-length album entitled, Devil Down, by the end of the year. We’re really happy with how it’s coming along and it’s been nothing short of awesome working with Ryan Butler (Landmine Marathon) of Arcane Digital Recording. Since Tony (guitars) joined the band last summer, our sound evolved as you would expect. We have more of a 70s/Southern Rock feel now and it’s really evident on Devil Down, more so than when we were flirting with that sound on the Sin Nombre EP. The vocals are probably the most noticeable change from the prior two releases. You can actually understand 75% of what Jarrod is saying and there are more of them now. Devil Down still has all the elements that you would expect from Twingiant, but you can definitely tell that we’ve matured and found our stride. We can’t wait to release it.”

On October 16th, 1968 – The Jimi Hendrix Experience released the double album Electric Ladyland. This would be the band’s third and final album.

On October 16th, 1974 – The twelfth British and fourteenth American studio album from The Rolling Stones was released: It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll.

TONY CAREY

Born on October 16th, in 1953 – Multi-instrumentalist and producer Tony Carey. Happy Birthday, Tony! Whoa! Tony Carey is famously known for his musical work with Planet P Project, along with numerous solo albums. From 1975 to 1977, Tony Carey played keyboards for Rainbow, appearing on Rising, On Stage and Live In Germany.

Tony played synthesizer on the 1977 Pat Travers album: Puttin’ It Straight. Two Sinner albums, No More Alibis (1992) and Respect (1993) were produced by Tony Carey. The number of albums that the legendary Tony Carey either produced or appeared on as a musician number in the dozens. Pictured above is Tony’s 1990 solo album: Storyville.

CHAD GRAY

Born on October 16th, 1971 – Metal vocalist Chad Gray. Happy Birthday, Chad! Man, Whoa! Chad Gray is famously known for fronting and forming two incredibly successful Metal bands: Mudvayne and Hellyeah. Chad Gray can kick some serious ass as a vocalist and Metal Odyssey says so. Chad Gray is pictured above, in the center of the photo, with Hellyeah.

FLEA

Born on October 16th, 1962 – Flea, the famed bassist, songwriter and co-founding member of Red Hot Chili Peppers. Happy Birthday, Flea! Right on! KISS “Love Gun” – Deluxe 2CD Version Releasing On October 27th, Via UMe; All The Details Here!

Legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees KISS continue to celebrate their 40th anniversary with the release of a deluxe two-CD version of their 1977 platinum-plus album, Love Gun, coming out October 27, 2014 on Universal Music Enterprises (UMe). The band’s sixth studio recording, Love Gun was the first album to feature lead vocal performances from all four original band members, and has since gone on to sell more than four million copies.

The two-CD edition will include the complete re-mastered first album, featuring such classics as the title track, “Plaster Caster,” the song inspired by Cynthia Plaster Caster, the groupie famous for taking casts of rock star genitalia; “Shock Me,” written about Ace Frehley suffering an electric shock during a concert in Lakeland, Florida; “Christine Sixteen,” and “Then She Kissed Me,” the band’s cheeky, gender-switching cover of the Crystals’ 1963 hit penned by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector.

The second disc is made up of rare, never released Love Gun demos of “Plaster Caster,” “Tomorrow and Tonight” and “Much Too Soon.” The first four lines of the demo “I Know Who You Are” eventually evolved and became the song “Living In Sin” and the rest of the lyrics and music became “I Know Who You Are.” A glimpse into Paul Stanley’s creative process is demonstrated in “Love Gun (Teaching Demo)” with Stanley talking through the various chords of the song after writing the song. The next version “Love Gun (Demo)” is the complete demo performance. “Reputation,” the only previously released demo, was originally included on this year’s KISS 40 compilation.

Also included is a 1977 interview with Gene Simmons, as well as three never-available live tracks from their show at the Capitol Centre, Landover, MD from December 20, 1977, “Love Gun,” “Christine Sixteen” and “Shock Me.” The package comes with liner notes especially written by Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott, recently on tour with KISS.

With the culmination of the KISS 40th Anniversary Tour, KISS marks their four decades as America’s most iconic band with their first-ever residency, KISS Rocks Vegas, at The Joint inside Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, a series of nine performances, starting Wednesday, Nov. 5 through Sunday, Nov. 23, including shows on Nov. 7, 8, 12, 14, 15, 19 and 22. KISS will make waves with one of the loudest, most over-the-top, non-stop parties ever at The Joint, unleashing its signature elaborate set designs, jam-packed set list, intense pyrotechnics and much more.

From rock ‘n’ roll to fashion, always creating and inspiring, KISS recently appeared as the finale on the prime-time CBS special Fashion Rocks, live from Barclays Center in Brooklyn, hosted by Ryan Seacrest, with Afrojack, Duran Duran, Jennifer Lopez, Miranda Lambert, Nico + Vinz, Pitbull, Rita Ora and the Band Perry.

Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley also star in 4th and Loud, the new primetime docu-series from AMC, which chronicles the first season of the Arena Football League team L.A. KISS.

On October 15th, 1989 – At Stonebridge Ranch in Dallas, Texas, guitarist Eddie Van Halen and bassist Michael Anthony of Van Halen participated in the first World Music Invitational Pro/Am celebrity golf tournament.

On this day in 1988 – The fourth studio album from Bon Jovi, New Jersey, begins its four-week stay at the top of the U.S. Billboard 200 Album Chart.

On October 15th, 1988 – Bon Jovi officially switches on MTV Europe in Oslo, Norway. This was back when MTV really did give a crap about music videos, Hard Rock and Heavy Metal.
