On This Day In METAL History – May 19th… A Whole Lotta KISSTORY

As reported on the KISS Facebook:

On this day in KISSTORY – May 19th, 1978, KISS performed a free concert at Magic Mountain Amusement Park in Valencia, California to film the concert scenes for the “KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park.” The concert took place in the parking lot of Magic Mountain. Tickets were distributed through a California radio station and approximately 10,000 fans attended the show. KISS performed a full regular set list and then lip-synched “Love Gun” and “Shock Me” for the movie. Between the concert and filming the extra scenes, the shoot lasted several hours and the band members interacted with the crowd through out the event.

“I remember it all like it was yesterday. Doing a film and a concert in a band where some were barely speaking to each other and others not speaking at all was even weirder than the script! I still can’t figure out the end of the film.”

Stone Says: Man, was I ever thrilled to see this KISS movie when I was a kid. I didn’t care less about the cheesy nature of this entire movie, hell, it was KISS! I grew up on black & white television; therefore a KISS network film was a spectacle for me. It’s been (gulp) decades since I’ve watched this KISS film.

I marvel at how KISS had such an impact on Pop Culture back in the 70’s and have continued such impact to this day. In my Metal opinion, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley are marketing geniuses. Really. Metal be thy name.

On this day in KISSTORY – May 19, 1992, KISS released their sixteenth studio album: REVENGE. This was the first studio album to feature Eric Singer on drums. REVENGE was dedicated to the late and great Eric Carr and features the demo he played drums on: Carr Jam 1981. Alongside Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, Bruce Kulick was the lead guitarist on this album.

REVENGE debuted at #6 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Charts and spent 23 weeks on the chart. In my Metal opinion, this was the best KISS studio album since 1982’s Creatures Of The Night. I absolutely love the song Domino, featuring Gene Simmons on lead vocals. I still have the cassette version of REVENGE. Yes, I did upgrade it to CD! Metal be thy name! – Stone

On May 18th, 1987 – The KISS (VHS) long-play video Exposed was released. Yeah!

On May 18th, 1993 – The great KISS released their third live album: KISS Alive III. This live album peaked at #9 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart in the United States. Whoa!

On May 18th, 2015 – Chicago’s Veil Of Maya has their fifth studio album, Matriarch, ranked #1 on the iTunes Top 100 Heavy Metal Albums Chart. Holy moly!

On May 18th, 2015 – Slipknot has their second studio album from 2001, Iowa, ranked at #26, on the iTunes Top 100 Heavy Metal Albums Chart. Hell and yeah!

On This Day In METAL History – May 17th… From Rainbow To Paul Di’Anno

On May 17th, 1975 – The iconic Led Zeppelin had their hit Trampled Under Foot, ranked at #38, on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. This song is featured on their sixth studio album from 1975: Physical Graffiti.

On May 17th, 1975 – The fabulous Queen had their hit single Killer Queen, ranked at #12, on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart, in the United States. This song is featured on Queen’s third studio album from 1974: Sheer Heart Attack.

On May 17th, 1976 – The legendary Rainbow released their second studio album: Rainbow Rising. The band lineup was amazing and included: Ronnie James Dio on vocals, Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Jimmy Bain on bass, Cozy Powell on drums and Tony Carey on keys. Whoa, man!

On May 17th, 1986 – The mighty Van Halen had their hit single Why Can’t This Be Love, ranked at #3, on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. Whoa! This song is featured on Van Halen’s seventh studio album from 1986: 5150. This album was the first to feature Sammy Hagar aka The Red Rocker on vocals.

PAUL DI’ANNO

Paul Di’Anno was born on May 17th, 1959, in England. Happy Birthday, Paul Di’Anno! Hell and whoa! The legendary Paul Di’Anno is world-famous as a Heavy Metal singer and songwriter. He was the first recording vocalist with the iconic Iron Maiden; being featured on their first two studio albums: Iron Maiden (1980) and Killers (1981). Pictured above is Paul Di’Anno’s live album from 2014: The Beast Arises.

During his post Iron Maiden years, Paul Di’Anno had enjoyed musical success with his bands Di’Anno, Battlezone and Killers, while giving it an impressive try with supergroup Gogmagog. There have been numerous guest appearances by Paul Di’Anno on other artists albums, along with being featured on many tribute albums. Paul Di’Anno’s solo career continues to this day.

Paul Di’Anno was also the vocalist on Iron Maiden’s kick-ass live EP from 1981: Maiden Japan.

Wanna See My JANI LANE Autographed Trading Card? It’s Really Cool…

That’s it at the top! That’s my Jani Lane autographed trading card and it’s certified authentic (see photo below). This unbelievable piece of Rock ‘N’ Roll history was seeded into packs of Upper Deck Spectrum Of Stars trading cards, which were initially sold around 2008; that’s the date printed on the back of this card, anyways. I bought this Jani Lane gem a couple of years before he passed away. A sports card dealer in Allentown, Pennsylvania had this card for sale and was asking $10 for it; I offered $8 instead and the dealer accepted. Whoa! Two other of these autographed trading cards that I own are: Miljenko Matijevic (Steelheart vocalist) and Don Dokken. Whoa, again!

To this day, I am very saddened that Jani Lane could not find the strength to battle his addictions. Jani Lane was a bona fide vocal and songwriting talent; he was a huge reason as to why Warrant became so successful, back in the day. Jani Lane also released a solo album back in 2003 titled: Back Down To One.

In 2008, Jani Lane’s (supergroup) band, Saints Of The Underground, released their debut studio album: Love The Sin, Hate The Sinner. I don’t own Jani’s solo album; yet I do own his S.O.T.U. release and it’s pretty damn good. Boston – Don’t Look Back (1978/Epic Records)

Anyone that doesn’t own this second studio album from Boston needs to put down their prune juice and take a course in Rock History.

IRON MAIDEN – Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son (1988)

Yes, there are a few UFO’s hovering around (a half of an) Eddie, on this album cover. This was another cover art masterpiece from the great Derek Riggs. Whoa!

ASIA – Aqua (1992)

The above UFO could also be considered a USO (Unidentified Submerged Object), if the imagery on this album cover is under water. Confused? So am I. By the way, this ASIA CD is out-of-print and costs just under $40 (U.S.) on Amazon.com. Whoa.

RUSH – Clockwork Angels Tour (2013)

I cannot identify that large and strange-looking aircraft above that concert stage while RUSH is performing; therefore it is a creepy UFO. ‘Nuff said.

ATRIA BOOKS SIGNS DEF LEPPARD LEAD GUITARIST PHIL COLLEN FOR MEMOIR

ADRENALIZED: Life, Def Leppard, and Beyond, written with veteran journalist and author Chris Epting and scheduled for publication on October 27, is the first book written by a member of the group that holds claim to being one of only five rock bands with two original studio albums selling over 10 million copies in the U.S. Featuring personal, never-before-seen photos of Collen and his band mates on stage and off, Adrenalized is a fascinating account of the failures, triumphs, challenges, and rock-hard dedication it takes to make dreams come true.

“It’s fascinating for even me to look back at my life from working in a factory at 16 years old to eventually traveling the world selling over one hundred million records and all the experiences that come with that journey,” Collen says. “I realize that there is a constant evolution of ‘me’ that is still a work in progress even as I continue to be vital and dynamic in my same occupation for the past 35 years well into my late fifties.”

Def Leppard will be touring this summer with Styx and Tesla. The 48-date outing will kick off in Tampa, Fla., on June 23 and will wrap in Jacksonville., on Oct. 17.

On May 15th, 1987 – Mötley Crüe released their fourth album Girls, Girls, Girls which went on to peak at #2 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart. This memorable album would go on to sell four million (plus) copies in the United States alone. Whoa!

On May 15th, 1997 – The Muzak company announced it would transform four KISS songs into elevator friendly instrumentals. The KISS songs that received the Muzak metamorphosis were: Beth, Sure Know Something, A World Without Heroes and Every Time I Look at You. This goes to show you, that weird shit happens and there’s nothing we can do about it. Nothing.

On May 15th, 2015 – The 2014 studio album from EXODUS, Blood In, Blood Out, is ranked at #55 on the iTunes Top 100 Heavy Metal Albums Chart. This is the tenth studio album from the legendary EXODUS and features the return of vocalist Steve “Zetro” Souza. EXODUS RULES!

On May 15th, 2015 – The eleventh studio album, Crypt Of The Devil, from the mighty SIX FEET UNDER is ranked at #92, on the iTunes Top 100 Heavy Metal Albums Chart. This album was released on May 4th, 2015, via Metal Blade Records.

On This Day In METAL History – May 14th… From Led Zeppelin To Kamelot

On May 14th, 1988 – The great Led Zeppelin reunites, with drummer Jason Bonham (the son of late John Bonham) and perform at Atlantic Records’ 40th anniversary concert at Madison Square Garden, in New York City. Whoa, man! The five songs Led Zeppelin performed at this Rock historic event: Kashmir, Heartbreaker, Whole Lotta Love, Misty Mountain Hop and Stairway To Heaven.

On May 14th, 1993 – Four costumes worn by the iconic KISS sold for $26,000, at Christie’s Rock and Pop Memorabilia auction in London, England. That sounds like a bargain, at today’s prices! Whoa!!

On May 14th, 2015 – The forthcoming studio album from California’s High On Fire, Luminiferous, is ranked at #14 on the iTunes Top 100 Heavy Metal Albums Chart. This will be the seventh studio album from High On Fire, releasing on June 23rd, 2015.

On May 14th, 2015 – Nirvana Unplugged In New York returns to the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart, at #49. Wow, that is a huge reentry! This former #1 album has spent 83 non-consecutive weeks on this Top 200 chart. This Nirvana album was originally released back in 1994.

On May 14th, 2015 – The new studio album from KAMELOT, Haven, debuts at #75 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart. Fabulous Metal news, indeed! Long live KAMELOT!

JOE SATRIANI SETS RELEASE OF HIS 15TH STUDIO ALBUM – “SHOCKWAVE SUPERNOVA” ON JULY 24TH

(Los Angeles – May 12, 2015) Legendary guitarist, JOE SATRIANI, announces plans to release his 15th solo studio album, Shockwave Supernova, on July 24th, making him one of the first to utilize the new “Friday, Global Release Day” for music.

It would be easy to call Shockwave Supernova a “masterpiece” or “the last word on guitar” from the world’s most commercially successful solo guitar performer. Satch, however, sees it much more personally. He has consistently advanced the artistry of the instrument; an effort he dedicated himself to on September 18, 1970, the day his idol Jimi Hendrix died.

Recorded late last year at Skywalker Sound in Lucas Valley, CA, Satriani assembled the dynamic trio of world-class musicians who had recently been part of his global tour; renowned keyboardist and guitarist Mike Keneally, a veteran of several Satch outings and recordings; along with drumming whiz Marco Minnemann and bass extraordinaire Bryan Beller. “I couldn’t have asked for a better band to help bring these songs to life,” says Satriani.

The album also sees Satriani once again joining forces co-producer and engineer John Cuniberti. Satch and Cuniberti share production on Shockwave Supernova, as they have on numerous albums – their shared history dates back to the guitar star’s 1986 debut album, Not Of This Earth and its follow-up, the platinum-selling, critically acclaimed, Surfing with the Alien.

Minnemann and Beller handle the bulk of Shockwave Supernova’s rhythmic duties, with the exception of four cuts – the driving “Keep On Movin’,” full of wondrous Satch guitar wizardry and Keneally’s playful piano, “In My Pocket,” a deliciously greasy, souped-up take on Swing, along with “Crazy Joey” (a deliriously effervescent romp) and “Scarborough Stomp” (a relentless upbeat rocker) – find Satriani joined by another powerhouse rhythm section: the esteemed drummer Vinnie Colaiuta (whose work includes the likes of Frank Zappa, Sting, Paul Simon, among others) and Jane’s Addiction bassist Chris Chaney (whose resume includes Alanis Morrisette, Celine Dion and Rob Zombie, to name a few).

Recently, during the final performance of his two-year Unstoppable Momentum tour, Satriani had an epiphany; he found himself, “playing the guitar with my teeth an awful lot. I thought, ‘Why are you doing this?’ It’s as if something else, or somebody else, was driving me to do it.” Satriani seized upon this moment of self-realization as the springboard and creative center for his alter ego “Shockwave Supernova,” the outlandish and extroverted ‘performance side’ of the normally shy and reserved guitar virtuoso. With this new persona as partner, Satriani launched his wildly ambitious 15th solo album, Shockwave Supernova.

In a creative and engaging alternative venture, Satriani, a lifelong science fiction fan, has reached out to the future, through the medium of animation. Finally recognizing the on-stage symmetry with his alter ego allowed Satriani to also take a risk on this particular style of storytelling. He says, “Guitarist Ned Evett and I have created an animated series called Crystal Planet. The actual Crystal Planet is our very own Earth, set billions of years in the future. The hero of the show uses music generated by a unique electric guitar to travel through time while the show’s characters struggle to preserve the future and past of humankind.” More information on Crystal Planet and how and where fans will view the series will be coming shortly.

On This Day In METAL History – May 11th… From IRON MAIDEN To ERIC BURDON

On May 11th, 1982 – The incredible IRON MAIDEN began their North American leg of their tour in support of their third studio album: The Number of the Beast. This concert took place at the IMA Auditorium in Flint, Michigan, opening for Rainbow. During The Beast On The Road tour, IRON MAIDEN also opened for 38 Special, Scorpions and Judas Priest. Whoa!!

On May 11th, 1990 – Nelson’s hit single More Than Ever is ranked at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. This song is featured on Nelson’s debut studio album from 1990: After The Rain.

On May 11th, 2015 – The cover song Bad Company, from Five Finger Death Punch, is ranked #1 on the iTunes Top 100 Heavy Metal Songs Chart. This cover song is featured on the second studio album from Five Finger Death Punch from 2009: War Is The Answer.

The original song was recorded by Bad Company and is featured on their debut and self-titled studio album from 1974; it was written by vocalist Paul Rodgers and drummer Simon Kirke of Bad Company.

On May 11th, 2015 – In This Moment has their compilation album Rise Of The Blood Legion: Greatest Hits (Chapter 1) ranked at #5 on the iTunes Top 100 Heavy Metal Albums Chart. Whoa! This album was released on May 4th, 2015, via Century Media.

On May 11th, 1941, Eric Burdon was born in England. Happy Birthday, Eric Burdon! Whoa, man! Eric Burdon is world-famously known as the lead singer for Hard Rock pioneers: The Animals. Eric Burdon has also enjoyed a very successful solo music career, continuing to this day. The Animals were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame back in 1994.

On May 10th, 1984 – Twisted Sister released their third studio album Stay Hungry. This album went on to become the band’s most successful album, while selling three million (plus) copies in the United States alone.

On May 10th, 1986 – Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee married famed actress Heather Locklear (Dynasty, Melrose Place) in Santa Barbara, California. Unfortunately, the pair would later divorce in August of 1993. Shown above: Pearl Drums promotional banner.

On May 10th, 2003 – Aerosmith’s charismatic and legendary singer, Steven Tyler, received an honorary doctorate degree in music from the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Whoa!

On May 10th, 2015 – The Who Hits 50! is ranked at #9 on the Billboard Top Hard Rock Albums Chart. This compilation album also includes one brand new song from The Who: Be Lucky. Long live the legacy of The Who!

On May 10th, 2015 – The debut studio album Creatures, from Pennsylvania’s Motionless In White, is ranked at #100, on the iTunes Top 100 Heavy Metal Albums Chart. Creatures was released back in October of 2010, via Fearless Records.

On May 9th, 1987 – Europe was ranked at #8 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart, with their studio album: The Final Countdown. This was Europe’s third studio album and it went on to sell three million (plus) copies in the United States alone.

On May 9th, 1992 – The great Def Leppard had their hit single, Let’s Get Rocked, ranked at #15. This song is featured on Def Leppard’s fifth studio album: Adrenalize.

On May 9th, 2015 – Göteborg, Sweden’s AVATAR have their studio album from 2012, Black Waltz (deluxe edition), ranked at #29, on the iTunes Top 100 Heavy Metal Albums Chart.

On May 9th, 2015 – AVATAR also have their studio album from 2014, Hail The Apocalypse (deluxe edition), ranked at #32, on the iTunes Top 100 Heavy Metal Albums Chart. Whoa!

TOM PETERSSON

On May 9th, 1950, Tom Petersson was born. Tom Petersson is world-known as the bassist, co-songwriter, backing vocalist and founding member of the legendary Cheap Trick. Happy Birthday, Tom Petersson! Whoa and hell yeah!

On This Day In METAL History – May 8th… From Aerosmith To Alex Van Halen

On May 8th, 1993 – The great Aerosmith reached #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart for the first time, with their eleventh studio album: Get a Grip. This album spent one week on top of this chart.

On this day in 2009 – Jane’s Addiction began their first tour, with their original band lineup for the first time in eighteen years. This concert took place in West Palm Beach, Florida, as a co-headlining tour with Nine Inch Nails.

On May 8th, 2015 – The mighty Metallica has their third studio album, Master Of Puppets, ranked at #130 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart. This iconic album of old school Thrash Metal was released back in 1986. Holy shit! Master Of Puppets has spent 81 non-consecutive weeks on this chart, peaking at #29.

On this day in 2015 – The third studio album from Bon Jovi, Slippery When Wet, has returned to the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart, ranking at #168. Whoa! Slippery When Wet was released back in 1986. This former #1 album has spent 103 non-consecutive weeks on this chart.

On May 8th, 2015 – The fifth studio album from In This Moment, Black Widow, is ranked at #1 on the iTunes Top 100 Heavy Metal Albums Chart. Nice! This is the band’s first album with Atlantic Records.

On This Day In METAL History – May 4th…

On May 4th, 1956 – Gene Vincent and his Blue Caps recorded Be-Bop-A-Lula for Capitol Records. Upon its eventual release, this iconic song was the “B” side to the much lesser known song: Woman Love. Be-Bop-A-Lula became a #7 hit single and sold 2 million (plus) copies during its initial release year. Wow!

On May 4th, 1974 – Grand Funk Railroad had their hit (cover) single, The Loco-Motion, ranked #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. This GFR cover version was produced by the legendary Todd Rundgren. This groovy song was originally recorded by Little Eva and released in 1962. Little Eva also took this song to #1 status.

On May 4th, 2015 – The eleventh studio album from KAMELOT, Haven (Deluxe Edition), is ranked at #1 on the iTunes Top 100 Heavy Metal Albums Chart. Haven will be released on May 5th, 2015. Whoa! The regular version of Haven is also ranked at #11, on this same chart. Nice!

On May 4th, 2015 – Motörhead’s fourth studio album, Ace Of Spades, is ranked at #89, on the iTunes Top 100 Heavy Metal Albums Chart. Hell and yeah!! Long live Lemmy and Motörhead!! Ace Of Spades was originally released back in 1980.

On May 4th, 2015 – Sad Wings Of Destiny, the second studio album from the powerful Judas Priest, is ranked at #90 on the iTunes Top 100 Heavy Metal Albums Chart. This would be the only Judas Priest album to feature Alan Moore as the drummer.

On May 3rd, 1969 – The iconic Led Zeppelin performed at the Rose Palace, in Pasadena, California. The setlist included: Train Kept a Rollin’, I Can’t Quit You Baby, Dazed and Confused, White Summer / Black Mountainside, Babe I’m Gonna Leave You, You Shook Me, How Many More Times, Communication Breakdown.

I really wish I could have been at this Led Zeppelin concert. Then again, I was only 3 years old and Yogi Bear was my cup of tea. Yup.

On May 3rd, 2011 – Poison – Double Dose: Ultimate Hits was released. As a double CD, this greatest hits features 35 songs from Poison. Man, wow!

On May 3rd, 2013 – Italy’s Rhapsody Of Fire released their first double-live album and second live album overall: Live – From Chaos to Eternity. This sensational double-live album features 24 songs. Whoa!

On May 3rd, 2015 – The seventh studio album From 10 Years, Birth To Burial, is ranked at #2 (as its debut) on the Billboard Top Hard Rock Albums Chart. This album is also ranked at #66 (as its debut) on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart.

On May 2nd, 1986 – The mighty Judas Priest kicked off their Fuel For Life Tour is support of their tenth studio album, Turbo, at the Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. Shown above is the cover of the VHS of Judas Priest – Fuel For Life.

On May 2nd, 1992 – California’s Ugly Kid Joe is ranked at #9, on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart, with their hit: Everything About You. This cool song originally appeared on Ugly Kid Joe’s 1991 EP: As Ugly As They Wanna Be.

On May 2nd, 1992 – Metallica reached the Top Forty of the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart for the fourth time with their power ballad: Nothing Else Matters. This song peaked at #34 on this chart. This song is featured on Metallica’s fifth studio album from 1991: Metallica aka The Black Album. Shown above is the back cover of the CD single for this song.

On May 1st, 1976 – Led Zeppelin went to #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart, with their seventh studio album: Presence. This fine album would stay on top of this chart for two weeks. Yes, the amazing song Nobody’s Fault But Mine is featured on Presence. The album cover art was designed by the legendary (London) design group: Hipgnosis.

On this day in 2015 – The third studio album from Black Sabbath, Master Of Reality, is ranked at #73, on the iTunes Top 100 Heavy Metal Albums Chart. Nice!! This tremendous album was originally released back in 1971.

On May 1st, 2015 – Ozzy Osbourne’s second studio album, Diary Of A Madman, is ranked at #62 on the iTunes Top 100 Heavy Metal Albums Chart. Whoa and yeah! Diary Of A Madman was originally released back in 1981. Sadly, this would be the last studio album that the incredible Randy Rhoades would play guitar on. RIP, Randy Rhoades.

On this day in 2015 – The fourth studio album from Hollywood Undead, Day Of The Dead, is ranked at #177 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart. Day Of The Dead has spent 4 consecutive weeks on this chart, peaking at #18.
