With their third album Exequiae (Latin for “funeral rites”), Lone Wanderer from Freiburg im Breisgau/Germany makes a striking statement in the realm of Funeral Doom. The band’s High Roller debut continues the thematic line of its predecessor The Faustian Winter, from the end of Faustian culture to inner grief and existential despair.

“Thematically and musically, we’ve never been closer to the core of Funeral Doom than with these five songs,” explains songwriter and guitarist Bruno Schotten. The tracks, including the nearly 25-minute centerpiece ‘To Rest Eternally’, combine majestic slowness, dense harmonies, and overwhelming heaviness. “The extended length of this track wasn’t intentional, but a logical necessity of the theme.”

Musically, Exequiae marks a high point in the band’s development: “Despite extensive excursions into elaborate harmonies, a red thread runs through the album. Including some more death-doomy passages, it sounds darker and more cryptic than ever.” The artwork, in keeping with the quartet’s tradition, is by Romantic painter Ernst Ferdinand Oehme, whose ‘Procession in the Fog’ captures the album’s grave stillness.

“We oversaw every step of the production, from the first guitar note to the final mix. This album is completely our work,” Schotten emphasizes. Exequiae is a funeral mass in slow motion, majestic, despairing, uncompromising – and stands as the band’s most compelling statement to date, treating Funeral Doom as a true art form.

The most prominent and significant American death/funeral doom emissaries EVOKEN succeed their 2018 landmark Hypnagogia album with their stunning seventh full-length opus, Mendacium, set for release on October 17th on Profound Lore RecordsMendacium is a work that will reveal itself as one of the darkest and most oppressive EVOKEN albums among their unparalleled repertoire.

Where Hypnagogia would see the band capture and focus on a more melancholic, tangible, and even more of an accessible sonic design, Mendacium takes that acute shift back to the monumental dirge-like dread and woeful catacombic and disharmonious heaviness reminiscent of the band’s Quietus and Antithesis Of Light masterworks, all while still encapsulating the tectonic-shifting nature of their Caress Of The Void and Atra Mors releases and venturing more through classic gothic audial textures and even treading a little down experimental mire as well, reminiscing an aura seeping from such luminary artists as Dead Can Dance, Monumentum, and Disembowelment.

To signal this shift in sound harking back to this previous era, the band enlisted the services of producer Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal who worked with EVOKEN on their Antithesis Of Light and Quietus albums respectively. The resulting Mendacium captures a sepulchral heaviness saturated in ambience with even more of an emphasis on deathlike dread and anguish; an ambience reflecting the depths and catacombs of an ancient cathedral or monastery, ultimately defining Mendacium as EVOKEN’s most powerful sounding album to date.

Thematically, Mendacium bestows an intriguing concept and story. It tells the tale of a fourteenth century elder Benedictine monk with malady from illness preventing him from leaving his room within the monastery he dwells within. His faith and service to God can never be satiated. Slowly declining in health and sleepless from continuous pain, the monk encounters a hideous entity emerging through a tear in reality. The story questions, is the torment of this monk by each passing hour being inflicted by this entity or is it all within his own mind?

In advance of the release of Mendacium, today the band unveils the album’s first single, “Matins,” noting of the track, “‘Matins’ is a peek into a reality.”

POSTMORTAL – Polish Funeral Doom Metal Entity To Release Profundis Omnis Debut Album via Aesthetic Death

Posted in doom metal, doom metal music, funeral doom metal, Metal, metal bands, metal music, Music, music news, news with tags , , , , , , on April 6, 2025 by Metal Odyssey

Polish funeral death doom entity POSTMORTAL will unveil its debut album Profundis Omnis on May 9th 2025, via Aesthetic Death.

Meticulously crafted with an unwavering passion for the genre, this release sees the band channel the bleak, monolithic essence of funeral doom’s greats. With a deep understanding of the style’s fundamental elements, POSTMORTAL shape their sound into a crushing and immersive experience, delivering an interpretation that is both hauntingly atmospheric and devastatingly heavy.

Track-list

1. Fallen
2. Darkest Desire
3. Decay of Paradise
4. Prophecy of the Endless
5. Queen of Woe
6. The Masterpiece of the Thing That Once Was but Will Never Be

The idea to create a funeral doom band was born in 2015 during the Czech metal music festival Brutal Assault, where most original members of the band were present: Michał (guitar), Karol (guitar), Sludge (bass) and Kamila (drums). In those days POSTMORTAL was officially created, joined soon by Dawid (vocals), and Sludge later replaced by Paweł.

Rehearsals and writing of the first songs began and by late 2017 and early 2018, the band were able to do two gigs in their hometown of Krakow, the only gigs to date.
In April 2018, Karol was replaced by Kamil and the band recorded the EP Soil. Shortly after these recordings, the drummer left the band.
Despite a lenghty search, it was not possible to find her successor and as a result the band went into hiatus.

Line-up:
Michał Skupień – music
Dawid Dunikowski – vocals, lyrics

In 2024 two original members, Dawid and Michał decided to reactivate POSTMORTAL as a two-person project with ideas and focus on creating a debut studio album. In the same year, Profundis Omnis was recorded, adapting tracks that were mostly written during the band’s early period.

Monolithic, bleak and primal, POSTMORTAL embraces the atmosphere of funeral doom overlords such as Thergothon, Tyranny, The Funeral Orchestra, Catacombs, Evoken.

TYRANNY – Finnish Funeral Doom Cult To Release First New Full-Length In A Decade Via Dark Descent Records Next Month; Artwork, Track Listing + Teaser Revealed

Tyranny - Aeons In Tectonic Interment - promo album cover pic - 2015 - #33003399T

Finnish funeral doom duo, TYRANNY – featuring within its ranks current and former members of Corpsessed and Wormphlegm among others – will unleash their first new studio offering in a decade this Fall via Dark Descent Records. Titled Aeons In Tectonic Interment, the record offers up five diseased psalms of slow, tortured, epically bowel-rupturing grimness.

Composed, performed and tracked by members Matti Mäkelä and Lauri Lindqvist with additional percussion by Jussi-Pekka Manner and mastered by D. Lowndes at Resonance Sound Studio (Absu, Pallbearer, Profetus, Sigh, Wodensthrone etc.), Aeons In Tectonic Interment is at once spiritual and ill-omened; a fifty-one-minute soul-searing sound apocalypse where misanthropy, suffering and imminent ruin become one achieving purification through sonic decay.

Aeons In Tectonic Interment Track Listing:
1. Sunless Deluge
2. A Voice Given Unto Ruin
3. Preparation Of A Vessel
4. The Stygian Enclave
5. Bells Of The Black Basilica

____________________________

Forged in 2001 by Mäkelä and Lindqvist, TYRANNY was conceived under the strain of a Stranger Will to channel the Ageless resonations of Earth and Oceans and sonorous visions and fevered dreams by the means of epic, Funereal Soundscapes. In 2004 the band unsheathed their debut, Bleak Vistae, which shook the foundation of a small, reclusive yet inexorably devoted funeral doom scene.

Crowned an, “epic masterpiece,” and commended for its, “mystical atmosphere,” and, “crushing wall of sound,” by Ultimate Guitar, 2005’s Tides Of Awakening reaped the attention of critics globally. Metal Bite championed a record that was, “uncompromising and extreme,” while Metal Reviews, in an “Album Of the Month” review likened it to, “a partner piece instructing in the discipline of appreciating one’s own suffering.”

TYRANNY has always operated in the shadows, worked on intuition and done things only when there was a will and the time seemed right for it. The past ten years have been devoted to various live appearances such as Roskilde Festival, Roadburn and the Kill-Town Deathfest, and the slow writing process of Aeons In Tectonic Interment – the band’s most devout work to date.

Aeons In Tectonic Interment will see release via Dark Descent Records on CD, double LP and digitally on September 18th, 2015 with preorders and track samples to be revealed in the coming weeks.

descend into despair - the bearer of all storms - promo cover pic - 2014

Romanian funeral doom collective, DESCEND INTO DESPAIR, is pleased to join the eccentric Domestic Genocide roster for the release of their forthcoming full-length, The Bearer Of All Storms. Melodic yet fragmented and led by the anguished growls of Denis Ungurean, the record is a primitive, thoroughly cheerless voyage through the various sounds and shades of suffering and despair, their grim, disconcerting hymns of negativity proving both elegant and suffocating.

Sink into the sorrow of teaser track “Mirrors Of Flesh” below:

The Bearer Of All Storms Track Listing:

1. Portrait of Rust

2. Mirrors of Flesh

3. Pendulum of Doubt

4. Triangle of Lies

5. The Horrific Pale Awakening

6. Plânge glia de dorul meu

7. Embrace of Earth

Forged in 2010 in the dismal town of Radauti, Romania, DESCEND INTO DESPAIR aims to consume its listeners with a pervading sense of melancholy, their lyrical themes teetering somewhere between hope for a better tomorrow and imminent societal collapse, the downward spiral of mankind playing the most prominent role in their source of forlorn inspiration. Over the course of four years and varying lineups, the band – now featuring Alex Cozaciuc (lead guitars, programming, drums, keyboards), Denis Ungurean (vocals, ex-Donkerland), Iulia Bulancea (bass), Orza Radu (drums), Cosmin Farcău (rhythm guitars) and Florentin Popa (keyboards) – has released one demo, one EP and the “Hierophant Of The Night” single written in memory of Lifelover’s Jonas Bergqvist, each offering proving more traumatic than the next both in sound and spirit.

The Bearer Of All Storms will be released via Domestic Genocide Records on January 28, 2014. Order your copy today at THIS LOCATION.
