On This Day In METAL History – November 1st…

On November 1st, 1971 – Alice Cooper released their fourth studio album, Killer, which went on to reach #21 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart. Killer eventually was certified Platinum in the United States by the RIAA.

On this day in 1979 – Aerosmith releases their sixth studio album: Night In The Ruts via Columbia Records. The most famous song from this album was the hit: Remember (Walking In The Sand).

On November 1st, 1986 – Boston reached the very top of the Billboard 200 Album Chart for the second time with their third studio album, Third Stage, which spent four weeks at number one. Third Stage was certified 4x Platinum in the United States by the RIAA. The power ballad Amanda, featured on Third Stage, reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, in 1986. Third Stage boasts two other songs that reached the top 20: We’re Ready at #9 and Can’tcha Say (You Believe In Me)/Still In Love at #20.

On this day in 1988 – The first single from Nirvana, Love Buzz”/”Big Cheese, appears on Sub Pop Singles Club.

On November 1st, 1991 – The second studio album from America’s ICED EARTH was released in Europe: Night Of The Stormrider. This fabulous album was later released in the U.S. on April 30th, 1992.

On this day in 1994 – A greatest hits compilation titled, Big Ones was released by Aerosmith, via Geffen Records. Two previously unreleased songs are featured on this compilation: Walk On Water and Blind Man. The other hits on Big Ones spans Aerosmith’s albums from 1987 to 1993.

On November 1st, 1994 – Nirvana – MTV Unplugged In New York is released. This album is a live acoustic performance, which was taped at Sony Music Studios in New York City, on November 18th, 1993.

ANTHONY KIEDIS

On November 1st, 1962, Anthony Kiedis was born. Happy Birthday, Anthony! Whoa, man! Anthony Kiedis is the lead singer for Red Hot Chili Peppers. Red Hot Chili Peppers were inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, back in 2012 and presented by Chris Rock. On This Day In METAL History – Halloween Edition – October 31st…

Today is October 31st, 2014 and thus it’s Halloween, here in the United States! Through the centuries, Halloween has also been known as: All Hallows’ Eve, All Saints Eve and Allhalloween. Enough with the history lesson, Halloween is a day to enjoy all things spooky, dress up as monsters or serial killers and (if you’re a kid) knock on strangers doors and beg for candy, in the dark of night. Below are events that have taken place on Halloween during decades of METAL history. Onward, my METAL brethren, shall we…?

On October 31st, 1970 – Led Zeppelin’s third album, Led Zeppelin III reached the top of the Billboard 200 Albums Chart for the beginning of a four-week run at #1. This was Led Zeppelin’s second number one album in the United States.

On this day in 1974 – The mighty Led Zeppelin officially celebrate the UK launch of their record label Swan Song, with a party at the Chislehurst Caves in Kent, UK. This Halloween gala was attended by the likes of label mates Bad Company, The Pretty Things, Roy Harper, strippers, magicians and fire-eaters.

On October 31st, 1974 – Cheap Trick made their live debut at Charlotte’s Web, in their hometown of Rockford, Illinois. Long live Cheap Trick!

On this day in 1975 – The legendary Queen released Bohemian Rhapsody, which at the time of its release was the most expensive single ever recorded. The song would reach number one in the United Kingdom on two occasions. This iconic song hit the top ten in the United States; twice peaking at #9 in 1976 and thanks to Wayne’s World, Bohemian Rhapsody peaked at #2 in 1992. Rest in peace, Freddie Mercury.

On October 31st, 1990 – Before his concert in Seattle, the legendary Billy Idol decided to dump 600 dead fish in the dressing room of opening act Faith No More. Faith No More reciprocated by streaking onstage during Billy Idol’s set. Whoa!

On this day in KISSTORY, October 31st, 1998 – KISS kicked off their tour in support of their 18th studio album: Psycho Circus. This was (supposedly) the first (full) album with their original lineup in 18 years. The famed Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles was where this KISS tour began. The Smashing Pumpkins opened for KISS. This was the first KISS concert tour to have 3-D visual effects.

On October 31, 2014 – The legendary MISFITS with special guests JASTA will be performing at The Reserve, in Meriden, Connecticut. Metal be thy name!

On this day in 2014 – The Thriller/Horror film ABCs Of Death 2 is released in U.S. theaters. Whoa!

MIKKEY DEE

On Halloween, October 31st, 1963, Mikkey Dee was born. Happy Birthday, Mikkey! Whoa yeah, man, you ROCK! Mikkey Dee is the legendary drummer for Motörhead. On This Day In METAL History – October 30th…

On October 30th, 1982 –RUSH peaks at #21 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with their single: New World Man. This hit is featured on the ninth studio album from RUSH, released in 1982 titled: Signals.

On this day in 1985 – MTV premieres the music video “Sun City” by Artists United Against Apartheid. Artists United Against Apartheid was a protest group of world-famous musicians, founded by activist and guitarist Steven Van Zandt, aka Little Steven, along with record producer Arthur Baker. The mission was to protest apartheid in South Africa.

On October 30th, 1988 – Bon Jovi kicked off their Jersey Syndicate Tour in support of their fourth studio album: New Jersey. The tour lasted 16 months. Bon Jovi then took a two-year hiatus after the end of this tour. Shown above is a tour program for the Jersey Syndicate Tour.

On this day in 1998 – The legendary Black Sabbath appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman. It was the band’s first appearance on U.S. television since 1976.

On this day in KISSTORY, 1998 – KISS appeared on the television show Millennium, both with and without their trademark makeup.

On October 30th, 2012 – The third studio album from Flyleaf was released on A&M/Octone Records, titled: New Horizons. Originating from Texas, Flyleaf has been recording their style of Alternative Metal since 2005.

On October 30th, 2013 – The paranormal movie, Skinwalker Ranch was released. This film is based on true events and was rated R. In other words, this is a scary movie to watch for Halloween! Whoa.

GRACE SLICK

On October 30th, 1939, Grace Victoria Wing, aka Grace Slick was born in Chicago, Illinois. Happy Birthday, Grace! Grace Slick is world-famous as the former vocalist for Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, Starship, The Great Society and as a solo artist. During her post music years, Grace Slick has found fame again as an artist in the visual/fine arts.

On October 30th, 1946, Chris Slade was born. Happy Birthday, Chris! Chris Slade is the former drummer for Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, The Firm, Uriah Heep, Asia and of course, the mighty AC/DC. Actually, Chris Slade has been a drummer for quite a few diverse acts, including the dynamic Tom Jones.

On This Day In METAL History – October 29th…

On this day in KISSTORY – October 29, 1976 – KISS appeared on The Paul Lynde Halloween Special. Paul Lynde was a very famous American comedian and actor, best known for his television specials and regular appearance on the hit televised game show, Hollywood Squares, where he sat as a regular in the center square. Sadly, Paul Lynde passed away in January of 1982, at the young age of 55. Rest in peace, Paul Lynde.

On October 29th, 1977 – Bat Out of Hell by Meat Loaf entered the Billboard 200 album chart. This iconic studio album of Rock and Hard Rock went on to spend 82 weeks on the Billboard 200 album chart, reaching its peak at #14. Bat Out Of Hell went on to sell 14 million copies in the United States alone. The song composer for this album was the legendary Jim Steinman.

On this day in 1982 – The Who hits #28 on the Billboard Hot 100 with their single Athena. This song is featured on The Who’s tenth studio album from 1982: It’s Hard.

On October 29th, 1955, Kevin DuBrow was born. Kevin DuBrow was the charismatic lead singer and co-songwriter for Quiet Riot. Sadly, Kevin DuBrow passed away in November of 2007, at the young age of 52. As a co-founding member of Quiet Riot, Kevin DuBrow helped launch and relaunch this band into Heavy Metal superstardom.

Quiet Riot became the first Heavy Metal band to reach #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, with their studio album Metal Health; this Metal milestone happened in 1983. On October 28th, 1978 – The legendary Alice Cooper made a guest appearance on The Muppet Show. Alice Cooper performed the classics: Welcome to my Nightmare, You and Me and School’s Out.

On this day in 1978 – The mighty Queen kicked off a tour in support of their seventh studio album Jazz, at the Dallas Convention Center in Dallas, Texas. Jazz was released back in November of 1978.

On this day in KISSTORY – October 28th, 1978 – KISS Meets The Phantom of the Park airs as the NBC Movie Of The Week.

On October 28th, 1989 – Aerosmith hits and peaks at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100, with their hit Love In An Elevator. This cool song is featured on Aerosmith’s tenth studio album Pump, released in September of 1989.

On this day in 1989 – Mötley Crüe hits and peaks at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100, with their single Dr. Feelgood. This memorable song is the title track featured on the Dr. Feelgood studio album, released in September of 1989.

On this day in KISSTORY – October 28, 1997 – KISS released their 17th studio album, Carnival of Souls.

On October 28th, 2003 – At a Pearl Jam concert in Santa Barbara, California, vocalist Chris Cornell of Soundgarden joined the band onstage for an unexpected reunion of the supergroup Temple of the Dog. Hunger Strike and Reach Down were the two songs performed from the 1991 Temple Of The Dog studio album.

On this day in KISSTORY – October 28th, 2014 – KISS Love Gun (Deluxe Edition) is released. It is the original album/newly remastered; plus 11 rare and unreleased demos and live tracks. Metal be thy name!

On This Day In METAL History – October 27th…

On October 27th, 1970 – The legendary Black Sabbath began their first tour of North America at Glassboro State College in Glassboro, New Jersey. During this historic tour, Black Sabbath would share the stage with the likes of Alice Cooper, The James Gang, Three Dog Night, Jethro Tull, The Small Faces, Badfinger, and Mungo Jerry.

On this day in 1979 – Motörhead releases their third studio album: Bomber. Along with the title track, this Motörhead album also features the classic tracks: Stone Dead Forever and Dead Men Tell No Tales.

On October 27th, 1988 – Def Leppard performed their final concert in support of their studio album Hysteria. This concert took place at the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, WA. Sadly, this concert was also their final performance with original guitarist Steve Clark who passed away in 1991 at the very young age of 30.

On this day in 1990 – Slaughter hits #19 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with Fly to the Angels. This up-tempo power ballad is featured on Slaughter’s 1990 studio album, Stick It To Ya, released via Chrysalis Records. Stick It To Ya has been certified double Platinum by the RIAA.

On October 27th, 1990 – AC/DC peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart with The Razors Edge. This marked the eleventh studio album released internationally for AC/DC and the twelfth studio album released in Australia. The Razors Edge features the hits Thunderstruck and Moneytalks, going on to sell five million (plus) copies in the United States alone.

K. K. DOWNING

Born on October 27th, 1951, in West Bromwich, England was K.K. Downing. Happy birthday, K.K.! Whoa yeah!! K.K. Downing was a co-founding member, guitarist and songwriter for the legendary Judas Priest.

On October 26th, 1968 – Steppenwolf hits #3 in the U.S. with their hit Magic Carpet Ride. This classic song is featured on the second studio album from Steppenwolf: The Second. How’s that for a play on words? Read it all again if you didn’t get it. Whoa!

On this day in 1969 – Suspicious Minds by Elvis Presley was a hit, everywhere. Yup.

On October 26th, 1979 – Foreigner hits #12 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 with Dirty White Boy. This Hard Rock classic is featured on Foreigner’s fabulous third studio album: Head Games.

On this day in 1981 – Under Pressure by Queen and David Bowie was released as a single. This eventual classic song would later peak at #29 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart.

On October 26th, 1991 – Extreme hits #4 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 with Hole Hearted. This mid-tempo acoustical song is featured on Extreme’s second studio album from 1990: Extreme II: Pornograffitti. This Extreme album is also certified double-platinum in the U.S., by the RIAA.

On this day in 2006 – 2112 by RUSH was named a MasterWork in Canadian sound recording, by The Audio-Visual Preservation Trust of Canada. This historic ceremony took place at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto, Canada. This prestigious honor ensured that 2112 would be preserved for future generations. 2112 was released back in 1976 and is the fourth studio album from RUSH.

On October 26th, 2011 – The mighty Aerosmith performed at the Personal Rock Festival in Asunción, Paraguay, at Jockey Club Paraguayo. This concert was part of Aerosmith’s 2011 Back On The Road Tour.

On this day in 2012 – The Spanish Horror film, Sleep Tight, was released in the United States. This fright flick was directed by Jaume Balagueró.

On October 26th, 2012 – The Horror film, Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, was released in theaters. This scary flick was written and directed by Michael J. Bassett.

On this day in 2014 – The legendary King Diamond is performing tonight at The Complex in Salt Lake City, Utah. Metal be thy name!

On October 25th, 1975 – Sweet hits #25 in the U.S. with their third studio album: Desolation Boulevard. This album classic features the hit single Fox On The Run. The U.S. album version also includes the hit: The Ballroom Blitz.

On this day in 1986 – Bon Jovi’s third studio album, Slippery When Wet, reached the top of the Billboard 200 Album Chart for the first of seven (non-consecutive) weeks. It was also Bon Jovi’s first number one album.

On October 25th, 2003 – At a KISS/Aerosmith concert in Las Vegas, Nevada, Steven Tyler’s daughter Mia married Dave Buckner, the drummer for Papa Roach. The couple eventually divorced in 2005.

On this day in 2006 – The great Ronnie James Dio made the announcement that he would be reuniting with his former Black Sabbath bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward as Heaven & Hell for a 2007 world tour. Vinny Appice would later replace Bill Ward on drums.

On this day in KISSTORY, October 25th, 2014 – KISS is headlining the Heaven & Hell Metal Fest, in Mexico City, Mexico.

GLENN TIPTON

Born on October 25th, 1948 was Glenn Tipton. Happy Birthday, Glenn! Hell and yeah! Glenn Tipton is the super legendary guitarist and longtime member of the super-duper legendary: Judas Priest. A true Heavy Metal pioneer and influence is Glenn Tipton!

Glenn Tipton has also recorded two successful solo albums. On March 7, 2006, Rhino Records released a new version of his 1997 Atlantic Records album Baptizm Of Fire along with the Tipton, Enwistle and Powell album Edge Of The World. This album includes previously unreleased recordings with the late drummer Cozy Powell and bassist John Entwistle.

MATTHIAS JABS

Born on October 25th, 1955 was Matthias Jabs. Happy Birthday, Matthias! Whoa! Matthias Jabs is famously known as being a longtime rhythm and lead guitarist for Scorpions. Matthias lives in Hannover, Germany and lists as his favorite food being: Italian. Matthias also lists his favorite sports as being: tennis and soccer. CHAD SMITH

Born on October 25th, 1961 was Chad Smith. Happy Birthday, Chad! Yeah! Chad Smith is famously known as the drummer for Red Hot Chili Peppers. Chad Smith is also the drummer for Chickenfoot, a supergroup that also features Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony and Joe Satriani. Red Hot Chili Peppers were inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2012 and presented by Chris Rock.

On October 24th, 1964 – The Kinks reach #7 in the U.S. with their Rockin’ single: You Really Got Me. In 1978, this song was featured as a heavier cover version, on the debut and self-titled album from Van Halen.

On this day in 1970 – The Kinks peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with Lola. This Rock classic was The Kinks’ fourth top ten single in the United States.

On October 24th, 2006 – Live To Win, the second solo album from KISS vocalist, guitarist and co-founder Paul Stanley was released. Along with Paul Stanley, John 5 played guitar on this album.

Born on October 24th, 1936 was Bill Wyman. Happy Birthday, Bill! Whoa! Billy Wyman is an English musician, record producer, songwriter and singer; most famously known as being the bassist for The Rolling Stones, from 1962 to 1993. ERIC CHOI

On October 23rd, 1966 – At London’s De Lane Lea Studios, The Jimi Hendrix Experience records their first two songs, Hey Joe and Stone Free.

On this day in 1976 – Led Zeppelin made their U.S. television debut on Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert. Led Zeppelin performed these two timeless songs: Black Dog and Dazed And Confused.

On October 23rd, 1989 – At the Riverside Club in Newcastle, United Kingdom, Nirvana performed their first European concert.

On this day in 1993 – Def Leppard hits #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 with their soft ballad: Two Steps Behind.

On October 23rd, 1995 – Def Leppard earned a spotlight in the Guinness Book of World Records by performing three concerts on three continents in one day. To promote the band’s first greatest hits album Vault: Def Leppard Greatest Hits (1980-1995), they performed at the Cave of Hercules in Tangiers, Shepherd’s Bush London and the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

On this day in 1996 – Rush reaches #5 in the United States with their 16th studio album: Test For Echo.

Led Zeppelin II reached #1 in both the UK and United States. Led Zeppelin II would later unseat The Beatles Abbey Road album from the #1 position in the United States, as well.

On this day in KISSTORY – October 22nd, 1974 – KISS released their second studio album: Hotter Than Hell. This KISS album has been certified Gold by the RIAA.

On October 22nd, 1977 – Foreigner hits #6 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 with their single Cold As Ice. This song is featured on Foreigner’s debut and self-titled album, released in 1977, via Atlantic Records.

On this day in 1982 – It’s Van Halen Day in Worcester, Massachusetts, as the band began a three-night performance at the Worcester Centrum.

On this day in 1993 – The future Canadian Prime Minister, Jean Chretien, was interviewed by legendary Rush drummer Neil Peart on Much Music.

On October 22nd, 1996 – Journey released Trial By Fire, their first album in ten years, which went on to peak at #3 on the Billboard 200 album chart. Trial By Fire went on to sell a million copies in the United States. This was the last Journey album with vocalist Steve Perry and drummer Steve Smith.

On this day in 2000 – Pearl Jam performed at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, celebrating the tenth anniversary of their first live performance.

On October 22nd, 2010 – Distributed by Paramount Pictures, Paranormal Activity 2 was released in movie theaters at midnight in the United States, United Kingdom, Mexico, Canada, Poland, Brazil and Ireland. With a budget of 5 million dollars, this horror classic grossed just under 200 million dollars at the box office.

LESLIE WEST

Born on October 22nd, 1945 was the legendary Leslie West. As a founding member, guitarist and songwriter of Mountain, Leslie West helped forge a path of Heavy Rock for other bands to follow. On October 21st, 1976 – The Who performed their last concert in North America with drummer Keith Moon, at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Canada. The legendary Keith Moon passed away at the very young age of 32, on September 7th, 1978. Rest in peace, Keith Moon.

On this day in 1978 – Frank Zappa is the musical guest and host on Saturday Night Live. Rest in peace, Frank Zappa.

On October 21st, 1989 – Living Colour reaches #31 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with Glamour Boys. This song was Living Colour’s fourth single released from their 1988 debut studio album: Vivid.

On this day in 1995 – Def Leppard reached number two on the U.K. Singles Chart with When Love & Hate Collide. This song would be Def Leppard’s biggest hit in their home country, while only reaching #58 in the United States.

On October 21st, 1997 – The ever charismatic David Lee Roth released his autobiography Crazy From The Heat. Diamond Dave’s autobiography revealed stories about his days in Van Halen and as a solo artist. Rock climbing and stories of his childhood were also covered. Crazy From The Heat also ranked at #13 in Rolling Stone’s The 25 Greatest Rock Memoirs Of All Time.

On this day in 1998 – Alice Cooper filed a lawsuit against KISS, claiming their song Dreamin’ sounded too similar to his band’s iconic hit single I’m Eighteen. This suit would be settled out of court the following year. Dreamin’ is a song from the 1998 KISS studio album: Psycho Circus.

On October 21st, 2006 – Bob Seger sang America The Beautiful before Game 1 of the 2006 World Series at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan. This marked the 102nd Major League Baseball World Series, with the St. Louis Cardinals defeating the Detroit Tigers: 4 games to 1.

On this day in 2006 – Evanescence were at #1 on the U.S. album chart with their second album The Open Door. This release became the 700th #1 album in Billboard, since the chart became a weekly feature, dating back to 1956.

On October 21st, 2011 – Paul Rodgers, famously known as vocalist for Free, Bad Company, The Firm, The Law and Queen + Paul Rodgers, became a Canadian citizen during an hour-long ceremony at Central City Tower in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. Paul Rodgers has been married to former Miss Canada Cynthia Kereluk since 2007.

On this day in 2014 – Slipknot .5: The Gray Chapter is released. This marks the first Slipknot studio album without the late, beloved founding member, songwriter and bassist Paul Gray. This album also marks the first without drummer Joey Jordison. The new drummer’s name has not been revealed. Metal be thy name. Rest in peace, Paul Gray.

Steve Lukather– legendary guitarist for Toto and revered solo artist was born on October 21st, 1947. Happy Birthday, Steve! Whoa! Steve Lukather is also a multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and arranger. A true man of music is Steve Lukather.

On October 20th, 1962, Bobby ‘Boris’ Pickett and the Crypt Kickers began a two-week stop at #1 on the U.S. singles chart with Monster Mash. The song had been banned by The BBC in the UK, as it was deemed offensive. Monster Mash would become a #3 hit in the UK eleven years later, in 1973.

On this day in 1973 – Joe Walsh hits #23 with Rocky Mountain Way, a song featured on his 1973 studio album: The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get.

On October 20th, 1976 – Led Zeppelin’s movie The Song Remains the Same premiered at movie theaters in the United States.

On this day in 1990 – MTV announces its MTV’s Radio Station contest, by giving away a radio station and $10,000.

On October 20th, 1991 – MTV Brazil presents its Top 100 Countdown Show, in celebration of its 1st anniversary.

TOM PETTY

Born on October 20th, 1950 was Tom Petty. Happy Birthday, Tom! Yeah! Famously known for his band Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers, this music legend was also a member of the American/British supergroup: The Traveling Wilburys. ALAN GREENWOOD

1951, Born on October 20th, 1951 was Alan Greenwood. Happy Birthday, Alan! Alan Greenwood was a founding member and keyboardist for Foreigner, playing on Foreigner (1977), Double Vision (1978) and Head Games (1979). Alan also played keyboards on Joe Lynn Turner’s debut solo album from 1985: Rescue You.

MITCH LUCKER

Born on October 20th, 1984 was Mitch Lucker. Mitch was a singer, songwriter and founding member of the Extreme Metal band: Suicide Silence. Mitch Lucker passed away, way too young, in 2012, due to injuries he sustained in a motorcycle crash.

On This Day In METAL History – October 19th…

On October 19th, 1966 – The Yardbirds landed in New York to embark on their first U.S. tour. Lead guitarist Jeff Beck left the band after the first two concerts due to acute tonsillitis and Jimmy Page shortly took over as lead guitarist. Jeff Beck would go on to form The Jeff Beck Group. On this day in 1968 – Cream performed at The Forum in Los Angeles, California, on the band’s farewell tour. Three live recordings were made at this concert which were later featured on the Goodbye album; this final Cream album was released in 1969.

On October 19th, 1974 – Bachman-Turner Overdrive reached #1 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart for the first and only time with their third studio album: Not Fragile. This milestone album for BTO spent one week on top of the chart and features the FM radio classics: You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet and Roll On Down The Highway.

On this day in 1980 – AC/DC began a UK tour of 20 dates, with the first venue being at Bristol Colston Hall. This was AC/DC’s first tour since the tragic death of their vocalist Bon Scott. The new AC/DC vocalist for this tour was none other than: Brian Johnson.

On October 19th, 1993 – Pearl Jam released Vs., their second studio album. This album would debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart. Vs. sold (a then-record setting) 950,378 copies during its first week of release.

On this day in 1996 – Rush kicked off their tour supporting their sixteenth studio album, Test for Echo, at the Knickerbocker Arena in Albany, New York. This would be a tour without an opening act for Rush, a decision which has continued on Rush tours to this very day.

On October 19th, 1996 – Nirvana achieved #1 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart for the fourth and final time, with their live album: From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah. This live album spent one week on top of the chart.

2013 – On this day in KISSTORY – October 19, 2013, KISS kicked off their Japanese Monster Tour at Makuhari Messe Arena in Tokyo.

Born on October 19th, 1976 – Pete Loeffler, the very talented lead guitarist and lead vocalist for Chevelle. Happy Birthday Pete! Whoa! Chevelle are a world-famous Alternative Metal/Modern Hard Rock band originating from Illinois, with seven studio albums to their credit since 1995.

On October 18th, 1966 – The Jimi Hendrix Experience performed their first concert as a band, supporting French pop star Johnny Hallyday, at the Paris Olympia in France. The original lineup was: Jimi Hendrix on guitar & vocals, bassist and backing vocalist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell. All three of these legendary pioneers of Metal are no longer with us, still, their music and influence will carry on forever.

On this day in 1968 – A Jimi Hendrix cover version of Bob Dylan’s All Along the Watchtower is released. This song is featured on the 1968 iconic double-album: The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Electric Ladyland.

On October 18th, 1975 – Sweet hits #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart in the United States, with The Ballroom Blitz. This song is featured on the third studio album from Sweet, released in 1974: Desolation Boulevard.

On this day in 1977 – Star Wars, George Lucas‘ record breaking and iconic Science Fiction adventure, is released in theaters. Metal Odyssey’s very own Stone claims: Star Wars is so freaking cool that it’s Metal. Metal be thy name!

On October 18th, 1989 – During a Guns N’ Roses set supporting The Rolling Stones at the Los Angeles Coliseum, Axl Rose announced he was quitting from the band. On the following night, Axl Rose apologized for saying that he would quit and proceeded to deliver a five-minute anti-drug speech.

CHUCK BERRY

On October 18th, 1926 – Charles (“Chuck”) Edward Anderson Berry was born in St. Louis, Missouri. Happy Birthday Chuck Berry! Whoa! The super-duper legendary Chuck Berry is aka: The Father Of Rock & Roll. Chuck Berry is famously known for his 1950’s hits: Maybellene, Roll Over Beethoven, Rock and Roll Music and Johnny B. Goode. A true Rock & Roll pioneer is Chuck Berry and his influence has touched many generations of musicians, across the globe!

GARY RICHRATH

On October 18th, 1949 – Gary Richrath was born in Illinois. Happy Birthday, Gary! Yeah! Gary Richrath is most famously known for being a founding member, guitarist and backing vocalist of REO Speedwagon, from 1970 to 1990. Gary Richrath was also a songwriter and producer for REO Speedwagon. Gary has sung on several REO songs, including Find My Fortune from 1973 and (Only A) Summer Love from 1976. Gary is shown in top photo, (circa early 80’s), in the left top corner.

In 1992, Gary released a solo album: Richrath – Only The Strong Survive.

On October 17th, 1970 – Free peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with All Right Now. This song was to be their only single to reach the U.S. top 40. The Free band lineup included: Paul Rodgers on vocals, Paul Kossoff on guitar, Andy Fraser on bass/piano and Simon Kirke on drums.

On this day in KISSTORY – October 17th, 1989 – KISS released their Gold album, Hot In The Shade. This spectacular KISS album spawned 3 major hit songs: Rise To It, Hide Your Heart and the power ballad Forever, with each respective song having its own hit music video on the MTV rotation. Hot In The Shade is the 15th studio album release, within the KISS discography.

Sadly, this was the last KISS studio album to feature the great Eric Carr on drums. Eric Carr passed away from cancer in 1991, at the very young age of 41. On Hot In The Shade, Eric Carr sang lead vocals on the song Little Caesar. The only other song Eric Carr sang lead vocals for, while with KISS, was the remake of the classic: Beth, which is featured on 1988’s Thrashes, Smashes & Hits. Bruce Kulick was the lead guitarist, with legends Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons rounding out the band lineup.

On this day in 1992 – Firehouse hits #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with When I Look Into Your Eyes. This hit single is featured on the second studio album from Firehouse, released in 1992: Hold Your Fire. Regardless that Grunge was the fashion genre of this era, Firehouse proved that a Hard Rock/Heavy Metal band could still sell millions of albums in the early 90’s.

On October 17th, 1998 – An Aerosmith concert in Holmdel, New Jersey, was webcast with the band members acting as their own camera men. Steven Tyler used a microwave camera on his mic stand, while guitarist Joe Perry had one attached to the neck of his guitar. Whoa!

On this day in 2000 – Legendary Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi released his debut solo album Iommi. This album featured many guest appearances with the famed likes of: Henry Rollins of Black Flag and Rollins Band, Queen guitarist Brian May, Billy Idol, Nirvana drummer/Foo Fighters singer & guitarist Dave Grohl, Phil Anselmo of Pantera and Down, The Cult’s lead vocalist Ian Astbury and Tony Iommi’s Black Sabbath bandmates Ozzy Osbourne and Bill Ward, to name a many few! Not a shabby roll-call of heavy-hittin’ legends!

CHRIS MOTIONLESS

On October 17th, 1986 – Born Chris Cerulli, in the great state of Pennsylvania, Chris Motionless is a founding member, songwriter and lead vocalist for Motionless In White. Happy Birthday, Chris! Hell and yeah!!

Motionless In White originates from Scranton, Pennsylvania and can be described in musical terms as a combination of Metalcore, Goth and Horror. Motionless In White have recently released (on September 16th) their 3rd studio album: Reincarnate. Chris Motionless is pictured above, in the center of his band.

MIKE JUDGE

Mike Judge was born on October 17th, 1962 – Mike Judge rose to world-fame as an American filmmaker, comedian, actor and cartoonist. Mike Judge created and starred in the animated television series Beavis and Butt-head (1993–1997, 2011) and King of the Hill (1997–2010), along with a very long line of other artistic achievements. Happy Birthday, Mike! Whoa!

Beavis and Butt-Head aired on MTV, following Headbangers Ball on Saturday nights. As a major feature of the animated series, Beavis and Butt-Head were/still are famously known as animated characters that made non-stop satirical comments about numerous Heavy Metal music videos of the day. On October 16th, 1968 – The Jimi Hendrix Experience released the double album Electric Ladyland. This would be the band’s third and final album.

On October 16th, 1974 – The twelfth British and fourteenth American studio album from The Rolling Stones was released: It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll.

TONY CAREY

Born on October 16th, in 1953 – Multi-instrumentalist and producer Tony Carey. Happy Birthday, Tony! Whoa! Tony Carey is famously known for his musical work with Planet P Project, along with numerous solo albums. From 1975 to 1977, Tony Carey played keyboards for Rainbow, appearing on Rising, On Stage and Live In Germany.

Tony played synthesizer on the 1977 Pat Travers album: Puttin’ It Straight. Two Sinner albums, No More Alibis (1992) and Respect (1993) were produced by Tony Carey. The number of albums that the legendary Tony Carey either produced or appeared on as a musician number in the dozens. Pictured above is Tony’s 1990 solo album: Storyville.

CHAD GRAY

Born on October 16th, 1971 – Metal vocalist Chad Gray. Happy Birthday, Chad! Man, Whoa! Chad Gray is famously known for fronting and forming two incredibly successful Metal bands: Mudvayne and Hellyeah. Chad Gray can kick some serious ass as a vocalist and Metal Odyssey says so. Chad Gray is pictured above, in the center of the photo, with Hellyeah.

FLEA

Born on October 16th, 1962 – Flea, the famed bassist, songwriter and co-founding member of Red Hot Chili Peppers. Happy Birthday, Flea! Right on! On October 15th, 1968 – The iconic Led Zeppelin performs their first show, at Surrey University in England.

On this day in 1972 – My Ding-A-Ling by the legendary Rock ‘N Roll pioneer Chuck Berry was a hit.

On October 15th, 1989 – At Stonebridge Ranch in Dallas, Texas, guitarist Eddie Van Halen and bassist Michael Anthony of Van Halen participated in the first World Music Invitational Pro/Am celebrity golf tournament.

On this day in 1988 – The fourth studio album from Bon Jovi, New Jersey, begins its four-week stay at the top of the U.S. Billboard 200 Album Chart.

On October 15th, 1988 – Bon Jovi officially switches on MTV Europe in Oslo, Norway. This was back when MTV really did give a crap about music videos, Hard Rock and Heavy Metal.

On This Day In METAL History – October 14th…

On October 14th, 1962 – Monster Mash (Bobby ‘Boris’ Pickett & the Crypt-Kickers) was a sensational hit! Monster Mash has since become a beloved Halloween song, even covered by the likes of the Misfits.

On this day in 1974 – London, England’s The Pretty Things sign to Led Zeppelin’s Swan Song label.

On October 14th, 1976 – Aerosmith kicked off their first European tour, at the Empire Theatre in Liverpool, United Kingdom.

On this day in KISSTORY – October 14, 1977, KISS released their double platinum album: ALIVE II. This was, in all likelihood, the first album cover to depict a Rock star that is spitting up blood.

On This day in 1978 – Rush began their tour in support of Hemispheres, at the Kingston Memorial Centre in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. To date, this was the longest tour by Rush.

On October 14th, 1989 – Mötley Crüe reached number one on the Billboard 200 Album Chart for the first and only time with Dr. Feelgood. This fabulous album had a two-week run on top of the album chart.

On this day in 1985 – The double live album, Live After Death, was released by the British Metal legends: Iron Maiden. If you’re like me, you’ll stare at the cover art (created by Derek Riggs) for hours.

On This Day In METAL History – October 13th…

On October 13th, 1980 – AC/DC’s Back In Black is certified platinum by the RIAA. This was the first AC/DC album to feature Brian Johnson on vocals, replacing the late Bon Scott. If you don’t own Back In Black, then hold your head down in shame.

On this day in 1982 – KISS releases their comeback studio album: Creatures Of The Night. This would be the last KISS album on the Casablanca Records label. I highly recommend this KISS album, their heaviest and finest album from the 80’s decade, in my Metal opinion. Vinnie Vincent plays guitar on this album instead of Ace Frehley. Still, to me, Space Ace looks really cool on this album cover.

On October 13th, 2009 – Blue Record, the second studio album from Baroness is released, via Relapse Records. This album is SOLID from beginning to end, in my Metal opinion. Call me bias, yet Baroness ROCKS.
