Years ago, I posted my “Metal Pick Of the Day“ on a frequent schedule. I’ve decided to return with writing for this fun topic again. I’ve chosen the first live album from Slayer, Live Undead, as my Metal Pick Of The Day for February 25th.
Live Undead was released back in 1984, via Metal Blade Records. I was a senior in high school back in 1984. Unreal, I know. I was a first-class smartass back in 1984; I still am, only not first-class. Anyhow, I originally bought Live Undead on cassette. Decades later, I sold that cassette with other vintage 80s Metal cassettes. Ouch. Long story short, I needed the money.
Fast forward to January 2023 and I purchased Live Undead on CD. Finally. I was so elated to own this slice of Slayer history once again! The music critics that have written lousy reviews over the years for Live Undead can simply kiss my ass. The controversy over the years regarding if a true live audience was present for this recording means donkey shit to me. I. Don’t. Care.
Listening to Live Undead is equal to comfort food for me. The early years of Slayer songs brings back such good memories. This album is raw, vicious and showcases how Thrash is supposed to sound like then and even now. An undisputed live Thrash Metal classic is this album, in my opinion. My favorite song on LiveUndead is The Antichrist. Hell, this entire album is an enduring slice of Metal history. Metal be thy name. – Stone.

Italy’s ADVERSOR will release their new studio album “Portrait Of A Wasteland” February 24th 2023 via Time To Kill Records, today unveiling the record’s cover art, track listing and stunning first single.
Portrait Of A Wasteland” represents a journey through some of the darkest moments a person can ever experience: suffering, anxiety, grief, frustration, barren dreams, denied future without forgetting a ferocious critic to a rotten society, clearly drowning into a spiral of extremisms. Ten raging tracks of pure metal that define a new chapter for the band, displaying a more mature sound mixing Thrash, Death, Black and classic Heavy. Vitriolic lyrics, razor-sharp riffs, neckwrecking parts are what “Portrait Of A Wasteland” is made of.
Formed in 2015, ADVERSOR released a demo and two full-length albums, “Rise to Survive” and “The End of Mankind”, in quick succession. Both records allowed them to play everywhere in Italy and Europe alongside acts such as Exciter, Protector, Nifelheim, Gama Bomb and many others.

Tucson, AZ thrashers Scars of Atrophy, formerly known in the 80s as Atrophy on Roadrunner Records, rebranded their lineup in 2020 and recently unleashed their return to the mosh pit with the new EP “Nations Divide” in June 2022, 30-plus years after the release of their last full-length 1990’s “Violent By Nature”. The band approached this comeback EP as both the entertainers and the audience. They love the thrash metal genre and for them, there is nothing better than watching a huge mosh pit break out while playing on stage.
The EP has also garnered praise with comments such as “honestly this EP is easily the winner for the best thrash metal material in 2022” – Encomium Zine and “Breakneck speed and crushing mid-tempo are balanced, so that fans of EXODUS, VIO-LENCE and TESTAMENT definitely get their money’s worth.” – Twilight Mag.
Closing the chapter for their breakthrough return that saw them touring the country and sharing the stage with bands such as Exhorder, W.O.R. plus a performance on Dimestock (Watertown, WI), Scars of Atrophy is sharing with fans their latest music video for the “Nations Divide” title track, which features clips from this year’s shows and insane mosh pits.
Watch the video via its premiere on Metal-Rules HERE.
Scars of Atrophy are currently working on their follow-up record for 2023, the band comments:
“Our yet-to-be-titled forthcoming album still needs tweaking and a hint of flavoring here and there and will be a greater representation of our EP ‘Nations Divide”. All songs on the EP will be on the album as well. Musically, the songs are all hard-hitting with our signature tempo and riffage. Definitely an aggressive approach with the thunderous double bass of veteran thrash drummer, Tim Kelly. The album will also have new tracks, Purge, Burn the Veil, and A Trophy Kill, which are currently being played live.”
Scars of Atrophy is recommended for fans of Testament, Exodus, and Slayer.

INCITE’s latest full-length, Wake Up Dead, was released in April via Atomic Fire Records. With Wake Up Dead, INCITE jettisons the extraneous bloat of slicker bands in favor of authentic grit and determination, consistently churning out “headbanging riffs with concussive force (Kerrang).” Ghost Cult champions, “a massively enjoyable collection of aggression from a band led by someone who has literally lived and breathed metal since the day he was born,” while Dead Rhetoric observes, “Consistent road warriors that they are, INCITE brings another platter to the table that should have no trouble adding more staples to the setlist – ensuring sweat infested hordes a glorious time.”
The very spirit and attitude of heavy music culture, courses through the veins of INCITE. Over the course of five albums — The Slaughter (2009), All Out War (2012), Up In Hell (2014), Oppression (2016), and Built To Destroy (2019) — the band has cemented their reputation as one of America’s leading groove armadas, heavily hitting home with their blend of old-school thrash majesty, frantic aggression, melody, and skill. Written over the course of several bouts of feverish inspiration throughout the pandemic, with recording duties again handled by legendary producer Steve Evetts (The Dillinger Escape Plan, Suicide Silence, Everytime I Die), Wake Up Dead delivers in the most relentless way possible.
INCITE’s Wake Up Dead is available on CD, LP, and digitally. Find ordering options at THIS LOCATION.

Maryland-based Crossover Thrash Metal quintet NINTH REALM will release their debut full-length album AFateUnbroken November 4 on Mercenary Press. The album is a perfect blend of of crossover thrash and traditional heavy metal that represents the band’s refined vision. “Plea to the Heavens,” the album’s first single, is streaming now at:
“Plea to the Heavens” is also streaming on Spotify.
A Fate Unbroken is a nine-track album that takes the influence of the widest range of heavy metal, 80s-toned thrash, death thrash, and hardcore that the decisive genres have to offer. Not only do the riffs, consistent guitar solos, and blackened vocals take the listener through a whirlwind of Slayer/Demolition Hammer era thrash metal, but the lyricism and quintessential raw fantasy style of their art and themes harken back to a Frank Frazetta/Ralph Bakshi age of pure Sword & Sorcery. A Fate Unbroken, for all intents and purposes, is a Maryland band’s attempt to bring a reunion of heavy metal and hardcore punk back to its raw, old-school roots.
Basing their lyricism and overall theme around the original fantasy realm of Tythorin, NINTH REALM delivers an electrifying synthesis of traditional heavy metal and hardcore punk for fans of both respective genres to enjoy.
Line-Up:
Joey Burke – Drums Ben Hageage – Vocals Jared Henry – Bass Liam McMahon – Lead Guitar Charles House – Rhythm Guitar
Pulling from a range of influences that span everything between blackened thrash to old-school death metal, the music of NINTHREALM rips and tears with a ferocity and cadence that perfectly encapsulates the epic scale and grisly atmosphere of grim-dark fantasy. Between the use of aggressive thrash d-beat and viscerally direct song structure of classic metal acts such as Celtic Frost, combined with the melodic riffage of classic bands like Testament/Mercyful Fate, and an added twist of Cro-Mags/Leewaystyle crossover, NINTH REALM wields what is perhaps one of the most poignant new sounds to emerge from the metal underground in recent memory.
FFO: Power Trip, Eternal Champion, High Command, Iron Age
BIO: Sharing a bond for all things heavy metal and high fantasy, college classmates Joey Burke (drummer) and Liam McMahon (lead guitarist) joined forces in the fall of 2018, writing and practicing every week to produce the 2019 demo, Gates of Tythorin. Later adding Jared Henry (bassist) and Ben Hageage (vocalist) to the mix, Ninth Realm solidified their sound with their succeeding 2020 EP, All Hail Treachery. In 2022, to offer a glimpse at what is to come with their debut LP, Ninth Realm released Ondreis MMXXII, a promo tape featuring two songs that both share a track space on the debut full-length record.

MISFIRE will be touring in support of Sympathy For The Ignorant, their ferocious debut full-length released through MNRK Heavy earlier this year. Conjuring old-school flavored thrash metal devastation with the kind of bombastic firepower that could wake the dead, MISFIRE creates more of a racket than bands twice their size, unleashing song after song of unrelenting savagery. It’s music that could have arrived in the thrash golden age of 1986, when bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Dark Angel, and Sodom delivered crucial records. And yet MISFIRE is forward-thinking, injecting modern metal mastery into their brew for a potent and timeless sound.
Captured in a small studio and engineered by vocalist/bassist Sean Coogan, MISFIRE’s SympathyForTheIgnorant is free from click-tracks and other unnecessary frills, projecting the purity of what three musicians raised on Pantera and the Big 4 sound like in a room together. The record is heavy, brawny, and confident, filled with the kind of earworm thrash metal riffs that sends aspiring players to the guitar store.
Sympathy For The Ignorant is available on CD, LP, cassette, and digital formats. Find ordering options at THIS LOCATION.

MISFIRE: Jay Johnson – vocals/guitar Sean Coogan – vocals/bass James Nicademus – drums
Guitarist Josh Christian about the song: “This song takes on the concept of wage slavery by using a scene from the Kinross’ Paracatu gold mine in Brazil, one of the largest in the world. Slavery is alive and well, and we wear it around our necks and on our fingers everyday. A brutal syncopated riff adorned with polyphonic and angular harmonies and solos…Toxik strikes again!”
“Dis Morta” marks the thrash metal legends’ third full-length album, and picks up where “Think This”, the band’s second album, leaves off. It’s an ambitious album with very little regard for tradition or even expectation – it’s honest and real, and the heaviest TOXIK release yet!
You can pre-order the album as a CD Digipak as well as limited edition vinyl LP in selected online stores – click here » https://lnk.to/dismorta
“Dis Morta” was mixed by Martin Furia, and mastered by Maor Appelbaum / Appelbaum Mastering. The album’s cover artwork was designed by Alcides Burn / Burn Artworks.
The album will be released on August 5, 2022 via Massacre Records.
