Baltimore, Maryland black metal quintet NIXIL has shared a guitar playthrough for “Collapsing The Poles,” taken from the band’s second full-length, From The Wound Spilled Forth Fire, recently released via Prosthetic Records. The playthrough comes in conjunction with NIXIL’s US tour set to begin tonight, September 29th, in Youngstown, Ohio and run through October 6th in New York City.
Speaking on the guitar playthrough, Shane Gardner comments, “My number one ‘BuZzy’ is a partscaster — a fender body and neck — that I purchased for $200 and added a Seymour Duncan Hot Rail Humbucker and a killswitch, no toggle. For the playthrough I overdubbed my track using an SM57 through a Marshall CODE 50 Practice amp into Adobe Audition.
“I use the inverted triad on a lot of our songs. ‘Collapsing…’ has them throughout the verse sections. I think they add texture to a simple chord structure, and it adds a hypnotic effect with the addition of Alden’s guitar note bend. It’s all in the hands I guess.”
Of their upcoming tour, the band adds, “We leave this Friday, September 29th, for eight dates in the Northeastern US to celebrate the release of From The Wound Spilled Forth Fire. This album — like all of our music — is best experienced live and loud; bring your rage, your aching heart, your unquenchable thirst for catharsis, and join us.”

After solidifying their lineup in its current form, with the arrival of guitarist/backing vocalist Alden, NIXIL opted to record From The Wound Spilled Forth Fire live at Magpie Cage Recording Studio with J. Robbins. The resulting six songs seethe with a frenzied despair, whilst more ominous passages breathe with a disquieting existential terror in every percussive and rhythmically meditative trance, exactly as the band intended to capture before handing mastering duties to James Plotkin.

BIOGRAPHY: Verilehto was formed in 2017 by Janne Tuikkala (Dawn of Everwinter, Muria, Alpha Noir, ex-Warceremony and ex-Strange Aeon) with ambition to write and record atmospheric, melodic, yet heavy black metal sung in Finnish. After showing few song ideas to Janne Partanen (Hautajaisyö, Alfa Pentatonik, Marraskuun Lapset, Paavalin Harhat and many others), they agreed to do a record together.
Few song ideas (oldest ones from 2001) led to first full album “Kuoleman Siipien Havina”.
The debut album consist from seven songs (intro + six songs), which are quite versatile compared to each other, yet still having a same mood to them. Melodic black metal layered with acoustic guitars and even additional drone synths.
All the music was recorded by Janne Tuikkala at his j.sound home studio during 10/2022 – 5/2023 and Janne Partanen recorded his vocals at Hautajaisyö headquarters during spring of 2023. Once vocals were finished Tuikkala mixed and mastered the record at j.sound.

The book release marks 10 years of Cult Never Dies
UK-based publishing house Cult Never Dies will mark its 10th anniversary this November with the release of Dayal Patterson’s “Black Metal:Evolution of the Cult – The Restored, Expanded &Definitive Edition”. With the original version of the book no longer available in print, Black Metal: Evolution of the Cult is hailed as the most acclaimed book on the history of black metal, and the only one endorsed by those involved in creating the genre.
The book will be approximately 340,000 words long, including 130,000 words of new content, 25 new chapters and 48 extended and updated chapters. Dayal Patterson, book author, Cult Never Dies owner and longtime music journalist, said: “I cannot express how good it feels now that Cult Never Dies finally owns the rights to this book and are able to release it – along with Decibel in the US – in this massively improved form. The limitations placed on the original in terms of word count meant that so many chapters and parts I originally envisioned simply couldn’t be included or were not even worth completing due to a lack of space. What turned into a fairly straightforward restoration job led to about a year of 14-hour days, not only overhauling the existing chapters and layout (something we had always been unhappy with) of the book, but doing a huge number of new interviews and working with a wealth of new bands and artists. This is the most ambitious and accomplished album by the Spanish black metal band Frozen Dawn who haven’t quite received the attention that they deserved in the past. Intense and sharp, their scintillating music is tempered by heart-rending melodies and leads, and it’s all beautifully strung together. For a decade and a half, Frozen Dawn have been perfecting their sound which can be described as stirring, intense and scathing black metal tempered with melody and soaring leads. The members have used their experience in notable bands to create something that not only pays earnest tribute to the classic bands such as Dissection, Necrophobic, Sacramentum and Naglfar but also sounds contemporary in terms of structure and execution. They’ve bolstered the sound with death metal influences and even added slight thrash touches, ensuring that the music remains powerful, incisive and compelling.
The momentum remains unabated as the band pummels its way through nine elaborate tracks and a fitting cover of Necrophobic. Many bands have attempted to recreate this sound with varying degrees of success but clearly Frozen Dawn have excelled at it which is mainly due to their knack for meticulous songwriting that straddles heaviness with emotion, allowing them to enhance the expression and maintain the much-needed diversity for the style. Extreme Metal Music is proud to announce the release of the one-man black metal band, Croatia’s Tryglav‘s second album “The Ritual” this coming February 2023 to follow the 2019 debut “Night of Whispering Souls” also released on the label.
All the music on “The Ritual” were written by founder Boris Behara with vocals entrusted to vocalist Callum Wright along with mixing and mastering by producer Rocco Pezzin. The songs on the sophomore record began their journey in 2018 as part of Behara’s love for black metal and horror imagery. After many re-compositions and re-arrangements along with interruptions from the world pandemic and his personal health with two open heart surgeries. , “The Ritual” will now see the light once again via Extreme Metal Music, a subsidiary of Italian label Rockshots Records.
“After three years, a world pandemic, and two open heart surgeries, I’m proud that the album I worked hard on is finally seeing the light! This time I wanted something more than just individual horror stories, that’s why I worked so hard to put out an original concept story based on Plague Doctors, which are the trademark of this band since the beginning. This album has seen so many difficulties, but finally, after three long years, it’s here! I hope fans will enjoy it as much I did create it!”
Tryglav‘s sound is aggressive, melodic, modern, and emotionally epic black metal, and fans of its predecessor will notice a maturity in sound and lyrics. The story behind the album is set in the 17th century as Tryglav explains further:
“On a dark stormy night, a dying man sighed his last breath. Nothing his parents could do to save his life. A Plague Doctor was called. Four of them showed up, taking the dead body with them. The family knew that they would never see him again. What they didn’t know was that he would come back, in an unimaginable way..”

Following the November release of their BBC Session 2011 Anno Domini two-track live 12″ via Southern Lord, new recordings from WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM have been confirmed for a 2014 release. Following several months of anticipation, the Cascadian Black Metal clan comprised of brothers Aaron and Nathan Weaver now humbly unveil their impending full-length release, Celestite.
Taking a different approach than their previous LPs, Celestite is a completely newly envisioned, parallel-universe version of Celestial Lineage, the beautifully blackened fourth studio full-length epic WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM released via Southern Lord in 2011. Celestite arises with a whole new, ethereal approach. There are no drums and no vocals. Rather, deep, heavy crystalline synthesizer journeying, Eno-inspired analog processing and arcane acoustic instrumentation expand upon dimensions folded within the universe of Celestial Lineage.

The Weavers tell us: “To make Celestite, we delved into the subterranean sonics that are buried in the mix of Celestial Lineage. We isolated them, processed them and took this unearthed soundscape as our starting point. Upon this base we recorded an entirely new album. Some melodies from Celestial Lineage are recognizable, but these familiar sounds appear as ghosts, barely tethered to the original compositions. This new album is an unorthodox foray; a fully instrumental, experimental companion record to Celestial Lineage. We left some work undone with Celestial Lineage. The recording of that album in the Winter of 2011 was a monumental project for us personally, and the creative fire from those recording sessions was still burning. This recording process was an opportunity to journey into our own inner universe to complete that which needed to be completed.”
Paired once again with producer Randall Dunn (Earth, Sunn O))), Master Musicians Of Bukkake), Celestite came to fruition at Avast Studios and WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM’s own Olympia-based studio Owl Lodge. While cloistered during the recording sessions they made use of a mammoth arsenal of crumbling vintage equipment including a Serge Modular System, Korg Poly6, Korg MS20, Korg Mono/Poly, Roland Juno 106, Roland Jupiter 6, Roland Super jx10, Jomox Airbase 99, Access Virus and more. The album also features a guest wind ensemble including friends Josiah Boothby on French Horn, Steve Moore (Earth, Sunn O))), Stebmo) on Trombone, and both Mara Winter and Veronica Dye on flute.

The upcoming release of Celestite is doubly exciting for WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM as it will mark another new venture for the duo; the inaugural release on their own new label, Diadem Records. The band states, “Diadem Records is the imprint we created to release Celestite and future albums. Most importantly for us, working on this album has revealed a whole new vein of creative energy for WITTR. Now that the long trip of creating this album is finished, our appetite is whetted for future projects, thus we feel it necessary to pre-empt the inevitable chatter that will accompany the release of this record. WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM has not permanently abandoned the guitar and drums! We sense that one day, perhaps sooner, perhaps later, we will be inspired to return to our stacks of amplifiers and cabinets to create new music.”

Satyricon, the self-titled eighth studio album by Norwegian black masters SATYRICON, has debuted at #12 on the U.S.A. Billboard Heatseekers chart and #30 on the Hard Music chart.
