Metal Odyssey’s METAL Pick Of The Day Is: W.A.S.P. “Scream” (Official Lyric Video / Napalm Records)

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, rock music with tags , , , , on November 3, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

WASP - Golgotha - promo album cover pic - 2015 - #33777MMGMSAOTSFF

W.A.S.P. – Metal warrior Blackie Lawless has returned with his legendary band W.A.S.P., with a towering follow-up to 2009’s Babylon studio album. The new studio album is titled Golgotha and the lyric video for the opening track, Scream, is below. Golgotha was released back on October 9th, via the great Napalm Records.

I would classify Scream as a more than a subtle religious song, lyrically referencing to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, without saying his name. Heck, the images of the three crosses and the album title of Golgotha backs up my thought there. Maybe I am totally wrong, who knows? I like this song very much and yet it’s not the greatest W.A.S.P. song ever recorded either. I guess that tells me just how powerful the back catalog of W.A.S.P. songs are!

I, like my Best Metal Buddy Scott Coverdale have been waiting for this new studio album to land; now that it’s here we are very, very psyched! I am pleased with the tempo of this song and the trademark W.A.S.P. sound is truly intact. Blackie‘s vocals sound sharp and the visuals featured on this lyric video are freaking cool as all hell. Strange as it sounds, I find the tempo and melody of Scream to be kinda similar to Night Ranger‘s song: Don’t Tell Me You Love Me. Perhaps it’s just me.

I hope you enjoy this song and lyric video as much as I do. Metal Be Thy Name. – Stone

Metal Odyssey’s METAL Pick Of The Day Is: UNCLE ACID AND THE DEADBEATS “Melody Lane” (Official) Music Video

Uncle Acid And The Deadbeats - The Night Creeper - promo cover pic - #MMMONSS0633

UNCLE ACID – I am very attracted to the Fuzz Metal from UNCLE ACID AND THE DEADBEATS. There is something about the sound, vibes and vocals from this band that I find irresistible. Melancholy and as the band themselves call it: Psycho Music. The fuzz from UNCLE ACID makes the fuzz from The Black Keys sound like chicken shit roasting on a hot tin roof. Seriously. UNCLE ACID is a (real) band that for certain will never become a mainstream media darling and that’s sensational in its own right.

The riffage and doom from UNCLE ACID carries their song Melody Lane throughout its nightmarish grandeur. Melody Lane is featured on UNCLE ACID’s new studio album: The Night Creeper. Watch this chilling music video below and prepare yourself for a song that you’ll either love or trash; there really is no in-between. I love this song and dig the creepy video too.

This far-out album of heavy darkness was released via Rise Above Records, back on September 4th. Look for this Night Creeper album to make some noise on Metal Odyssey’s Best Of 2015 lists, after the holiday season. Metal Be Thy Name.

QUEENSRŸCHE – It’s been far too long since I’ve posted a Metal Pick Of The Day. What better way to kickstart it all once again, with the magnificent QUEENSRŸCHE! Guardian is a pumped-up and convincingly strong song from QUEENSRŸCHE ‘s recently released studio album: Condition Hüman (Century Media).

With Guardian, Todd LaTorre nails it on vocals and QUEENSRŸCHE are as powerful than they’ve ever been, in my Metal opinion! I love listening to Scott Rockenfield on drums and he is killer on this track. I can go on and on. Instead, crank the living hell out of Guardian below and Metal Be Thy Name!

AZRAEL’S BANE RETURNS!

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, news, rock music with tags , , , on October 25, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Azraels Bane - promo group live collage - 2015 - #33033MOABMMNSS

HighVolMusic is pleased to announce that Houston, Texas Rock band Azrael’s Bane is reactivated and has signed a 3 album deal with the label. 2016 will see the official release of the bands sophomore effort ‘Modern Day Babylon’ complete with bonus material. Also in the works is the highly sought after debut ‘Wings of Innocence’.

Power Metal, Prog, Melodic Metal, Hard Rock, – descriptions touching on multiple genres of heavy music today, none seem to do justice to the music that is Azrael’s Bane. Based in Houston, Texas, Azrael’s Bane was formed in the summer of 2002. Its members, all seasoned veterans of the heavy rock and metal scene sought to create music that was new, powerful, and different from the norm. They have since developed a strong following through touring and sharing the stage with international acts such as Motorhead, Hammerfall, WASP, Danzig, Ripper Owens, George Lynch (Dokken), Metal Church, Nevermore, Jag Panzer, Quiet Riot, LA Guns, Into Eternity, Lillian Axe, F5 and Neal Turbin among others including a slot on one of the world’s largest Latin American festivals, the Monterrey Metal Fest in Monterrey Mexico.

The band has appeared in multiple US music festivals including Rocklahoma, ProgPower West in Los Angeles and Milwaukee Metal Fest. The band signed a 2 album deal with Chavis Records in the summer of 2005 releasing the highly acclaimed debut CD ‘Wings of Innocence’. The CD received high marks from the press which included a perfect (5 out of 5) review score from legendary Los Angeles, California radio station website KNAC.COM  as well as brisk sales worldwide.

In 2009, their 2nd album ‘Modern Day Babylon’ was released to another wave of critical acclaim by the worldwide melodic rock music media. The band took a much-needed break in 2010. They returned in January of 2015 with new drummer Van Eric Turner (formerly of Z Lot Z ) to begin work on a third album. With soaring clean vocals, shred oriented musicianship, five-part vocal harmonies, and an emphasis on memorable, hook-laden songwriting, Azrael’s Bane are poised to again make their mark on today’s metal music landscape.

Vocalist Trey Gadler checks in with the following update: “The band and I are all very excited to announce our signing with HighVolMusic! HVM are great people who share our vision and game plan making them the perfect partner for us in getting our music out to the world. Stay tuned because this is going to be awesome!”

HighVolMusic label boss Bill Chavis states: “We are super stoked to announce that Azrael’s Bane has signed with HighVolMusic! An amazing band, Azrael’s Bane is comprised of top-notch musicians with their own signature sound loaded with crushing rhythms, blazing guitars, 5-part vocal harmonies and the man up front Trey Gadler. Welcome home boys…”

The band is currently writing music for their third album, to be released in 2017.

DIGIPAKS STINK LIKE MONKEY POOP. HERE’S WHY…

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, humor, Music, news, rock music with tags , , , , , on October 20, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Screen Shot 2015-10-19 at 11.21.37 PM

Below you will find the Top 10 Reasons Why Digipaks Stink Like Monkey Poop. Enjoy.

______________________________

  • Digipaks crease, ding and tear VERY EASILY, even with delicate handling.
  • Even before you buy the damn digipak version off the retail shelf, it’s already dinged, creased or torn. That’s bullshit.
  • Guess what happens while taking the plastic wrap off of a digipak? You ding it. That’s insane bullshit.
  • It takes patience and skill to get the damn CD and liner notes out of the digipak sleeve. After doing so, the cardboard sleeve is dinged from your fingernails; not to mention the liner notes took a nasty beating too.
  • Digipaks get CRUSHED when stacked underneath a pile of CD jewel cases. Hell, a couple of magazines can crush a digipak. Again, that’s bullshit.

This is NO laughing matter!!!

Laughing Monkey - promo pic - 2015 - #667MO66777MNSSC

  • A digipak has NO defense against any liquid. At least a CD jewel case has a freaking fighting chance in protecting the liner notes and CD itself. Trust me, I know ALL about that one.
  • If you wanted to bury your digipak in the ground, for safekeeping, the life expectancy of the cardboard is 4 weeks. That’s intense bullshit.
  • A damaged CD jewel case can be easily replaced. A damaged digipak stalks your music collection, like the uninvited pain-in-the-ass that nobody gives a shit about. Do not get alarmed, for the respective CD and liner notes will always find themselves a new home inside a spare and cozy… jewel case.
  • Just opening and closing a digipak automatically CREASES the spine; not to mention leaving visible fingerprints all over the cardboard. That is unreal bullshit.
  • Purchasing a used CD as a digipak version is never a fun moment. The digipak 99.9% of the time is so freaking mishandled, dinged and worn; not to mention the disease ridden bacteria that has probably been absorbed by the cardboard itself. Yay. Um, bullshit.

FROM ASHES TO NEW “DOWNFALL” – A Metal Odyssey Album Review

From Ashes To New - Downfall - promo EP cover pic - 2015 - #0339966MOSN

4 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall4

FROM ASHES TO NEW are a Rap/Alternative Metal band from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Their new EP Downfall has grabbed my attention in a positive way, as you’ll read below. The band’s debut studio album, Day One, is slated for a February 2016 release.

Adding to the excitement that is stirring within the From Ashes To New camp is their forthcoming supporting role on the Christmas Vacation Tour; a tour which boasts Falling In ReverseAtreyu and Assuming We Survive. From Ashes To New just concluded a supporting role on the Five Finger Death Punch Tour; a tour that also featured Papa Roach and In This Moment. ‘Nuff said and whoa.

I once lived in Pennsylvania for nearly seven years, right on the Allentown city line. During my time living there, I can easily state that Pennsylvania is a hot-bed for music. From the annual Berks Jazz Fest in Reading to Musikfest in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, with many bustling music clubs in-between, music is an essential part of social gathering in The Keystone State.

With the likes of Hall & Oates, Halestorm, Cinderella, Sinister Realm, Motionless In White, Candlelight Red and Poison originating from Pennsylvania, it doesn’t surprise me at all that such a talented band as From Ashes To New call this great state home as well.

From Ashes To New - promo band collage pic - 2015 - #993300MONSSMSC77

From Ashes To New: Matt Brandyberry (Vocals/Guitar/Keys/Programming) Chris Musser (Vocals) Branden “Boo” Kreider (Guitar/Vocals) Garrett Russell (Bass) Tim D’onofrio (Drums)

___________________________

From Ashes To New blend their styles of Rap and Alternative Metal together in a seamless fashion, with all four songs on their new EP: Downfall. These songs are filled with more hooks than a pro fisherman’s tackle box and flow with each other like a fresh mountain stream. Seriously, From Ashes To New have taken their own musical canvas and painted their own art upon it; there is very much originality here to be heard and embraced. Where some bands of this ilk can get downright annoying, From Ashes To New have sucked me into their melodious vacuum.

As the Rap Metal goes, I find it to be as cool of a listen as when Anthrax had done it many Metal moons ago. These are well written (both lyrically and musically) and thought-out songs on Downfall; while they’re also minus any lullaby moments too. The numerous spurts of heaviness throughout this EP makes it all the more enjoyable for me; plus I truly dig the vocals and chorus that From Ashes To New perform so very well. It appears that Lancaster, PA has exported a talent that I could not resist boasting about and I wish nothing short of the very best for From Ashes To New. Metal be thy name. – Stone.

A MESSAGE FROM SERAFINO PERUGINO, President of Frontiers Music srl

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, news, rock music with tags , , , , on October 17, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Frontiers Music srl - promo record label logo - 2015 - #33MNSMOSCT

As reported on Frontiers Music srl | Record Label website:

I have seen that some people are commenting with their disappointment that a few of the “so called” supergroups are not playing live and that this somehow diminishes the relevance or quality of these releases. A lot of negative vibes and preconceived notions are made before a note of music has even been released. This is not a new issue to us and we of course respect people’s opinions, but in these times of social media where direct communication to the fans is available, I thought I’d make a direct statement to explain how we, Frontiers see things.

Since the moment I put the label together, I saw this as one of the most exciting jobs that I could ever have imagined in my life. It was something that for years I was only able to dream of. The idea of working with the artists that for years and years I had been listening to on record was truly exciting. And after almost 20 years (yes, next year Frontiers will turn 20!), I think I have not lost one ounce of that initial enthusiasm! I was, and still am primarily a MUSIC fan and I have always interpreted my role as A&R director of Frontiers in a creative way. I have always been relentless in trying to find and expose GOOD MUSIC to the fans. And considering that when I started the label a lot of the classic bands that I grew up with were disbanded or not active, I think that I have really helped in creating some interesting pieces of music to fill the void left by those legends.

Since the days where – together with artists like Kevin Chalfant, Mark Mangold, Jim Peterik, Billy Greer or Tony Harnell to name a few – we created the concepts of Two Fires, The Sign, Seventh Key, Pride of Lions and Starbreaker, Frontiers has been the “brain” behind these new band projects which were greeted warmly by the public and the media. Now as to WHY those bands have never played live? Well to begin with it is not completely true that none of these projects have ever played live. In fact, The Sign, Two Fires, Seventh Key, The Magnificent, W.E.T, Angelica, ISSA, and I am certainly forgetting others, have all played live shows. And also, it needs to be said that there is nothing in principle that prevents these bands from playing live. In most cases, unfortunately this has to do with a lack of interest from tour promoters and/or with scheduling conflicts among the members or even certain contractual obligations that the artists might have to their main band. However, I am pleased to say that there will be more and more efforts from our side to bring these projects to life on the stage moving forward – and you will soon see what I mean.

So, yes, I think I am creative and again, what still preoccupies me the most, after all these years, is to keep releasing GREAT records that keep Classic Rock, Melodic Rock, and Hard Rock alive and well with a constant flow of quality releases. This – I think – allows everyone to keep ENJOYING new and exciting music while allowing me to keep building on my personal dreams thanks to the art, talent and skill of all these amazing musicians we are so fortunate to work with. Just think about all the amazing records from the likes of ALLEN LANDE, FROM THE INSIDE, ISSA, KHYMERA, KISKE SOMERVILLE, PLACE VENDOME, FIRST SIGNAL, SUNSTORM, VERTIGO and all the others…

I really hope that people can welcome with open arms the music we release and give it a fair chance, regardless of who is involved, if the artist is touring, etc. Moreover I wish to say one final thing: If it wasn’t for some of those projects, we would have had a lot more difficulties in launching new talents. The most shining example is probably W.E.T, whose success immensely helped the exposure for two of the most EXCITING new bands we have on the roster, Eclipse (Sweden) and Work of Art. But, I could obviously mention Revolution Saints for Alessandro Del Vecchio, Allen Lande for Magnus Karlsson, Starbreaker for Fabrizio Grossi, Find Me for Daniel Flores, and of course all the work we did during the years with Dennis Ward and so on. These groups are also a really important tool to expose new songwriters, producers and real musical talents to the world.

Talking about new bands, you may have noticed some “young blood” coming in. I am very proud of these new guys and I hope you will follow and give them a chance, exactly in the same way you would do with a new Whitesnake or Journey record.

Long Live Rock n’ Roll!!

Serafino

On This Day In METAL History – October 16th… From DEEP PURPLE To IRON MAIDEN

Deep Purple - Perfect Strangers - promo album cover pic - 1984 - #MONSSMM33033

On October 16th, 1984 – The great DEEP PURPLE released their eleventh studio album: Perfect Strangers. I love this album so much! Honestly, I recommend this album to every music loving human being on planet Earth. I remember getting my first copy of Perfect Strangers on cassette! I bought it back in ’84 at Strawberries Records & Tapes in Avon, Connecticut. Whoa!

Perfect Strangers featured the super legendary “Mark II” lineup of: guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, vocalist Ian Gillan, Jon Lord on keys & organ, Ian Paice on drums and Roger Glover on bass. My favorite songs on Perfect Strangers are: Knocking At Your Back Door, Perfect Strangers, Wasted Sunsets and Hungry Daze.

Kiss - Asylum - promo album cover pic - 1985 - #090306MNSS4E

On October 16th, 1985KISS released their thirteenth studio album: Asylum. This is not one of my favorite KISS albums, yet King Of The Mountain and Any Way You Slice It are very cool songs. Tears Are Falling kinda gets on my Metal nerves, after all these years. The album cover is cheesy too. Hell, the late & great Eric Carr has the bottom of his face cut-off on this Asylum album cover. WTF? That’s blasphemy!

FLUMMOX – To Release New Album

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, news, rock music with tags , , , on October 15, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

FLUMMOX - promo artwork - 2015 - #9393MOSSMN77733

Progressive Sludge three-piece Flummox are set to release their latest album Selcouth in early 2016. After the genre-defying Phlummoxygen (2015), Selcouth is sure to be another memorable release. The band defy traditions even within a genre as obscure and exciting as sludge metal. The band’s ability to merge technicality with the absolutely outrageous has left eager, excited and perplexed ears waiting for this next release.

The Tennessee outfit merge a traditionally Southern sound with an avant-garde sludge infused with Zappa-esque tendencies. This is not just flummoxing for the fun of it; the band are infectious, technically gifted and full of rhythm. Flummox is a well-selected band name and in listening to Selcouth you can expect disharmony, you can expect to be confused and you should expect a pronounced Tennessee drawl.

Flummox officially tell the music world to expect the unexpected with this next release and will continue to surprise, shock and weird people out. Not afraid to show some personality with vocal outbursts and heavy riffing, the trio have the ability to pull in lovers of all genres ranging from sludge to experimental, jazz and funk.

Each song on Selcouth is a sure-fire attempt to defy tradition and pull in inspiration from their eclectic set of influences including Black Sabbath, Frank Zappa, Opeth and King Crimson. Being fearlessly weird is a foolproof way of getting attention, and Flummox are sure to have everybody listening.

Band Bio:

The birth of Flummox came from an insatiable need to create music without restraints and limits. Blake Dellinger and Drew Jones came together after feeling unsatisfied with bands that limited their musical endeavors. Their first three track EP The MindrapE.P. was released in 2012 with drummer Matt Rose and solidified the band’s status as a force to be reckoned with within the Tennessean music scene. By the end of 2012, they had played nearly 20 shows and cemented the band’s playful energy with various incarnations and stage antics.

In late 2013, Flummox recorded their first album, Phlummoxygen, with engineer Dave Summers in his Tullahoma, Tennessee home studio. In early 2014 after the album was finished, Flummox signed on with Tridroid records who gave the album a March 2015 CD/Cassette release.

Currently, the Flummox trio consists of Dellinger, Jones, & Jody Lester as the singing drummer. The band’s new album is due in winter of 2016.

Did You Know? - Banner - Metal Odyssey - 0704SLNASAMOTT

On October 9th, 1992 – A meteorite that weighed 28 pounds and shaped like a bowling ball crashed into the back-end of a 1980 Chevy Malibu, in Peekskill, New York, USA. The good news: This 1980 Chevy Malibu was sold to Lang’s Fossils And Meteorites for a whopping $10,000; which was well above the Kelley Blue Book value at that time. Mama Mia!!
