The Dead Daisies - Happy New Year - 2016 - promo band pic - #MO3939ILMFMD99

Dear Rockers Everywhere,

we’re calling in to wish all of you an amazing new year! 2016 will be awesome, with new music, some exciting announcements and as always lots of Rock’n’Roll! We’re looking forward to seeing all of you again to have a good time together. We especially want to thank you for the support, the amazing shows and the sheer love of music in 2015!

During the last year, there has been an overwhelming amount of ‘First times’: For example on Nov 8th, the opening night with Whitesnake in Moscow, a first for The Dead Daisies which would be followed by a long list of countries and cities visited (again) for the first time by the band including Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Croatia and Serbia. We played a headline show in Paris, which turned out to be a very special celebration of joy & music, and headed for the UK and (another first) a headlining tour. We also made a welcome return to Israel. Quite a different line-up of the band played around the same time two years ago. This time around, John Corabi, Marco Mendoza and Brian Tichy were making their first (that word again) trip.

We can’t wait until we will be making more ‘firsts’ in 2016. And we would love for you to join the ride!

Happy New Year,
The Dead Daisies

Happy New Year - 2016 - banner - #MO33ILSMMDSOT993939

HAPPY NEW YEAR! To ALL of my friends, partners in METAL promotions and visitors to Metal Odyssey, I say THANK YOU for your METAL support last year and may you ALL have a grand METAL 2016!! Cherish life, always stay positive and stick-it-to-the-man. Metal Be Thy Name.

Below are a couple of METAL albums that are releasing this month in which I might purchase right away, depending on my budget. Yes, paying bills will continue on in 2016 and that forever sucks dehydrated donkey poop.

Witchcraft - Nucleus - promo album cover pic - 2016 - #MO33ILMF99

I dig Witchcraft. ‘Nuff said. This band is one solid reason as to why Sweden kicks Metal ass. Witchcraft’s new album Nucleus releases on January 15th, via Nuclear Blast.

Axel Rudi Pell - Game Of Sins - promo album cover pic - 2016 - #MOILMF33993993

AXEL RUDI PELL is an amazing guitarist to listen to and Johnny Gioeli is a very cool “throwback” vocalist too. These guys remember how Heavy Rock is supposed to be created. This new album, Game Of Sins, releases in the USA on January 22nd, via Steamhammer / SPV.

Metal Odyssey’s Top 10 Hard Rock And Metal Albums Of 2015!

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, news, rock music with tags , , , , on December 31, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Stone - Scott Coverdale - Top 10 Albums Of 2015 - promo banner - 2015 - #MO33MDILFNSMSTO

Stone Says:

2015 was a very enjoyable year for me, when it came to Metal and Hard Rock releases. On a personal note, 2015 was one of my saddest years, due to the passing of my Father this December and then Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead left us. May they both rest in peace. Once again, I’ve told myself to cherish life and the music that brings us together. I hope you all will share my sentiment.

On an upbeat note, I did compile my list of Top 10 Hard Rock And Metal Albums Of 2015. My Metal Brother and Metal Odyssey’s staff researcher Scott Coverdale also has compiled his Top 10 Of 2015 as well, on this same post! Whoa! My love for Classic Rock is shown on my Top 10 list with Europe and FM; both bands released what probably are their finest albums ever, in my opinion. My #1 is Enforcer From Beyond, a Metal album I consider to be beyond incredible!

My Top 10 list would never be complete without the entries of Venom and Motörhead; both bands released freaking killer albums this past year and I’ll forever recommend them both! Please check out Iron Kingdom and Fallen Angels when you can, both of these underground Metal bands deserve ALL the praise I can possibly give them and they are in my Top 10! Thank you for visiting Metal Odyssey, Happy Metal New Year and Metal Be Thy Name. – Stone

Scott Coverdale Says:

This past year happened to be one of the best years in music for me in decades. Many of my favorite bands that were cranked-up on my car stereo back in 1986 were once again being cranked-up in 2015. With the likes of Whitesnake, Def Leppard, and Iron Maiden releasing great studio albums this year, it was really difficult coming up with my Top 10 for this year. Before I list my Top 2015 Albums Of The Year, I would like to shout out a huge THANK YOU to one of the Greatest Bands of all time… MÖTLEY CRÜE.

I was lucky enough to see THE CRÜE this past summer for the last time, on their Farewell Tour. It was kind of a bitter-sweet night for me, at this concert. On the one hand I was having a great time taking in the show with my high school buddies, just like we did at the “Theatre Of Pain” concert back in the day, while at the same time saying Good bye to one of my all-time favorite bands wasn’t easy. Thank You!!! – Scott Coverdale

Alternative Band NEW MAYANS Release Cinematic Single “Jezebel”

Posted in alternative rock, Hard Rock, Music, news, rock music with tags , , , on December 7, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

New Mayans - Jezebel - promo single cover art - 2015 - #MO33NSMS333993

Chicago-based Band Just Dropped Their Second Track From Upcoming Concept Album: “Odyssey”

_____________________________

Chicago, IL – Rock outfit, New Mayans, just released their single, Jezebel, a bat out of hell anthem with grizzly guitar licks and a head-banging beat. With a rich and diverse palette, New Mayans takes us further down the rabbit hole that provides more insight of the mad world they’ve constructed in their upcoming concept album, Odyssey, due out later next year. “Jezebel” is now available to download on Bandcamp.

Following the success of their well-received debut single, “Universe,” New Mayans shift gears away from the softer seventies synth tones into a darker arrangement of heavy distorted guitar work and hooks echoing influences of seventies and nineties alternative rock. Lead singer, Swiggy, has described his musical style as “Mad Max meets Ziggy Stardust,” which makes sense with the release of their latest single, “Jezebel.” As “Universe” painted the first stroke a cosmic world that stylistically pays homage to the art rock of David Bowie and Morrissey, “Jezebel” hones in on the hard edge of distorted electric guitars that conjure imagery of a post-apocalyptic landscape. “Jezebel” is from the perspective of an unreliable narrator. “The concept of reality is all in the mind of the observer,” Swiggy comments. “The only person who knows the truth to these questions is an exotic dancer named Jezebel.”

victoriasandersphotography.com

victoriasandersphotography.com

To capture the varying inspirations that New Mayans weave together, they recruited producer Mario J. McNulty (David Bowie, Prince, Lou Reed, Nine Inch Nails.) The menacing guitar work in “Jezebel” fits comfortably next to the chops of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, though the entire sonic landscape New Mayans creates defies comparison. “Jezebel” was recorded at The Magic Shop, known for flagship albums such as David Bowie’s secret album The Next Day, Coldplay’s Viva La Vida, and Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs.

Hailing from St. Louis, Swiggy exhibited an insatiable thirst to play music as he began learning how to play a violin at the early age of eight years old and would continue to sift through studying saxophone, guitar and piano throughout his youth. Fusing inspiration from an avant-garde pool of bands like Radiohead, David Bowie and Pink Floyd with directors like David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick and David Cronenberg, the result is the surreal aural experience that is New Mayans.

The band’s full lineup was solidified in 2014 when Swiggy began collaborating with Nathan Gilberg on bass, Earl Slick assisting in studio guitar work (David Bowie, John Lennon, Keith Richards), and Sterling Campbell on drums (David Bowie, The B-52s, Duran Duran). Swiggy has played at House of Blues-Chicago, The Pageant, Off Broadway, and The Social while sharing the stage with acts such as The Ataris, The Von Bondies, InnerPartySystem, and Nico Vega.

Playing with symbolism both religious and otherworldly, New Mayans establish a world that is truly imaginative and boundless in their music. “Jezebel” indicates they are as capable of rocking out ruthlessly as they are of crafting a sound of reflective contemplation in “Universe.” With both ends of the spectrum in mind, the possibilities fans can expect from the band’s upcoming album, Odyssey, are endless. “Jezebel” is now available on Bandcamp. To learn more about the epic narrative New Mayans assemble in their eclectic indie rock, check out NewMayans.com!

Scott Weiland – Rest In Peace And Thank You For The Music

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, news, rock music with tags , , , , on December 5, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Scott Weiland In Memory Of - promo photo - #33MONS339696

As reported on the Scott Weiland Facebook:

Scott Weiland, best known as the lead singer for Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, passed away in his sleep while on a tour stop in Bloomington, Minnesota, with his band The Wildabouts. At this time we ask that the privacy of Scott’s family be respected.

_____________________________

I first learned from twitter that Scott Weiland passed away. I read the news during the wee hours of Friday morning (December 4th). I couldn’t fall back to sleep for some time, due to many reasons. Firstly, I always loved the singing voice of Scott Weiland; his vocals I’ve found to be both haunting (Plush, Wicked Garden) and incredibly melodic (Interstate Love Song). Scott Weiland was also a smart lyricist; his words always made me stop to think for a moment.

Stone Temple Pilots - Core - promo album cover pic - 1992 - #MOSTPNSFMMS33

I discovered the magic of Stone Temple Pilots when I first saw their music video for Wicked Garden, thanks to MTV’s Headbangers Ball. After that, I scrounged everywhere for spare change to buy the debut album from STP on cassette. This was back in 1992 and I was solidly broke, depressed and in need of music that could (and would) carry me through. Scott Weiland and STP’s Core album was a huge dose of diverse and fresh Heavy Metal that I embraced. STP was Grunge, my ass. I’ll go to my grave arguing that STP was not Grunge.

Embed from Getty Images

Fast forward to the present and I will admit it is difficult to accept that Scott Weiland is gone. Hell, Scott Weiland was only 48 years old. I could and never would bring up Scott Weiland’s substance abuse history due to the facts: I did not personally know him and who the hell am I? I’ll tell you who I am: a 49-year-old recovering alcoholic that made more incredibly stupid mistakes from drinking than I could ever count. That’s who I am. I’ve lived and thankfully learned, before it was too late.

I thank Scott Weiland for giving us all a brand new path towards how Heavy Metal can sound different. He was and still is one of the greatest voices in Rock History, due to his easily identifiable tones. Hopefully, Scott Weiland can find peace now and be proud of his many accomplishments, wherever he may be. Metal Be Thy Name. – Stone

Metal Odyssey’s METAL Pick Of The Day Is: ARMORED SAINT “Win Hands Down” (Official Video)

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, rock music with tags , , , , on November 23, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Armored Saint - Win Hands Down - promo album cover pic - 2015 - #ASMO05313

ARMORED SAINT – From The City Of Angels came one of the greatest Classic Metal bands of our time (IMO) and I’m talking about ARMORED SAINT. This band of Metal warriors returned in 2015 with their seventh full-length studio album, via Metal Blade Records: Win Hands Down. This album is a winner, loaded with nine fabulous songs to satisfy us die-hard old schoolers of Metal.

Win Hands Down was produced by ARMORED SAINT bassist Joey Vera and is an enormous follow-up to 2010’s La Raza studio album, in my Metal opinion. John Bush sings in his awesome and unique fashion on this album; you can hear for yourself in the music video below. I don’t know what it is, yet the vocals of John Bush resonates splendid Metal vibes throughout my Metal brain and veins. It’s always been that way. Cool.

The entire band is on freaking fire throughout Win Hands Down. Guitarists Phil Sandoval and Jeff Duncan are a superb duo to take in. The rhythm section of Joey Vera on bass and Gonzo Sandoval on drums are a pounding potion of ear euphoria for me! The bridge in the song Win Hands Down is something else too; very different as you’ll hear. Whoa. Yeah, I dig ARMORED SAINT and hopefully you’ll dig their music video for the title track of their album: Win Hands Down. Metal Be Thy Name. – Stone

An Ocean of Void is a five-piece from Bordeaux, France. It is a project that plays hard-to-classify heavy music with plenty of contrasts since 2010. Its inspiration goes from different scenes as Post-Rock, Atmospheric Metal or Progressive Metal, with a Pink Floyd influence clearly established.

After a self-produced demo (2012), the band’s debut album ‘The Great Escape’ will see the light the 4th of December, through Inverse Records. With melancholic nuances and latent sadness, ‘The Great Escape’ is a perfect soundtrack for dark winter days, a real journey through feelings and emotions.

Former MOTÖRHEAD Drummer PHIL “PHILTHY ANIMAL” TAYLOR – REST IN PEACE

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, news, rock music with tags , , , on November 12, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Motorhead - Stones Book - #MO33777LKPAFEC

Shown above: A Motörhead book I own, chronicling the classic era of Motörhead. From L to R: Lemmy Kilmister, Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor and “Fast” Eddie Clarke.

__________________________

As reported on the Official Motörhead Facebook:

Lil’ Philthy…he who once shouted ‘stop wincing about’ on an album…he who fueled many a young boy’s punk/metal hairstyles…he who played the drums with fury and intent…he who liked to call people ‘wazzocks’ once in a while…friend, Roman, Derbyshireman…rest in peace…with much love…

Stone Says:

The staff of Metal Odyssey expresses condolences to the family, Motörhead and friends of Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor.

Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor has now joined Michael Burston aka Würzel up in Rock ‘N Roll Heaven, as the only two Motörhead family members that have passed away way too young. This influential drummer played on a  dozen or so (proper) Motörhead albums and is regarded as a true legend of Rock ‘N Roll by countless fans and peers. I never did get to see Philthy Animal Taylor play live and that is unfortunate. I saw Motörhead in concert after the classic era of this iconic band.

I remember my very first taste of Motörhead was a live bootleg recording of the band; a recording I cherished on a beaten up 8 track tape back around 1982 or so. I never heard anything so awful and yet so wonderful in my life, courtesy of that messed up 8 track. From then on, it has been a love affair I have for Motörhead that I can never let go of.

Above: Motörhead Ace Of Spades studio album from 1980. Shown L to R: Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor, Lemmy Kilmister and “Fast” Eddie Clarke, the classic era of Motörhead.

As I write this post, one of my favorite Motörhead songs of all-time has begun to play in my brain: One Track Mind. I guess I always assumed that Rock Gods like Philthy Animal Taylor would live forever, it’s always that way for me, unfortunately. Philthy Animal Taylor will live on though, through those classic era Motörhead albums and his musical works that followed.

REST IN PEACE, PHIL “PHILTHY ANIMAL” TAYLOR.

Metal Odyssey’s METAL Pick Of The Day Is: KAMELOT “Insomnia” (Official Video)

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, rock music with tags , , , , on November 7, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Kamelot - Haven - promo studio album cover pic - 2015 - #KMO7709

KAMELOT – Progressive/Symphonic Metal superstars KAMELOT released their eleventh studio album, Haven, this past May 4th, via Napalm Records. Insomnia is the second track on this album; an album that I’ve appreciated since my first listen. I easily recommend Haven to everyone, due to the fact that KAMELOT crosses over many Rock and Metal genres. This album is, frankly, one of the beacons of Metal Releases in 2015.

Loaded with Power Metal style keys from Oliver Palotai and the cinematic vocal style of Tommy Karevik, Insomnia is both a memorable and entertaining music video. I hope you enjoy this song and video (below) as much as I do. Metal Be Thy Name. – Stone

___________________________

As read on the Napalm Records YouTube site for KAMELOT’s Insomnia:

Insomnia is a sic-fi inspired song. In a post apocalyptic world, surveillance is everywhere and over population is rampant. Deep in the underground of the Wasteland Monarchy lies the Insomnia Division, the housing for some of the chosen ones, only allowed to live in an Insomniatic state.
