CROSSPLANE “Masturboned” – A Metal Odyssey Album Review

Posted in Hard Rock, Metal, Music, rock music with tags , , , , , on June 16, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Crossplane_Cover

4 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall4

I never knew about Crossplane until their new studio album, Masturboned, sunk its heavy Rock ‘n’ Roll into my melon sized skull. Crossplane consists of band members: Celli on vocals and guitar, Alex on guitar, Matthias on drums and Schluppi banging out the bass guitar. Crossplane are from Germany and have very cool musical ties to Tom Angelripper of Sodom fame, via vocalist/guitarist Celli. Each time I listen to this Masturboned album, it hasn’t failed to get me into a happy and who gives a shit groove. Now, that’s a big plus anytime of the day or god forsaken night.

Immediately, the Motörhead influence smacked me in the face like a six-pack of cranium busting bliss; or is that blitz? Vocalist Celli has Lemmy’s vocals down to a science and musically Crossplane could easily be anointed as the greatest Motörhead cover band on planet Earth and beyond. Regardless, Crossplane has compiled original material for Masturboned and they honestly kick immense ass. Crossplane does venture into their own hard-hitting ways with Sweet Little Rockabella and Magical Queen.

Crossplane - promo band pic - 2015 - #223381CMO

To put Crossplane into a time machine which sends them back to the 70’s, these dudes would be an enormous draw at the legendary CBGB’s in New York City’s East Village; in my Metal opinion, that’s what I believe. Hell, I gather they’re a dynamite draw where they play today as well. All that nonsense aside, Crossplane has both a retro and relevant musical vibe about them. By the way, track #14 is called Time Machine and it’s a damn solid and memorable song too.

Along with Motörhead fans, Crossplane should impress Orange Goblin fans too, with their mixture of Punk and Roll meets heavy as shit, dirty, back alley, biker club Rock ‘n’ Roll. Masturboned is one of those albums that is difficult to fast-forward through; picking one favorite song is tough for me, yet here it is: The Battle In Me. At the end of the stinking day, Crossplane serves up 16 songs that makes Masturboned an album to party to, cruise to, lift weights to, eat pizza to, escape from jail to, run a marathon to, have rough sex or safe sex to, as well as being an album to smash some shit apart to. Metal Be Thy Name. – Stone

Dark Matter, the debut album from Russian power/speed metal act DISTANT SUN is out now on Metalism Records. Stream it in its entirety at this location.

Dark Matter is available for purchase from Google Play and iTunes.

The album is the follow-up to 2012 EP Sunless Citadel (Sublimity Records) and features 10 songs in the finest traditions of melodic European power metal, bolstered with elements of American thrash metal. A deluxe digipak edition that includes several bonus cover songs will be released later in the year.

Though DISTANT SUN‘s main influences are speed and power metal bands like ANNIHILATOR, ICED EARTH, BLIND GUARDIAN and RAGE; listeners will note a James Hetfield (METALLICA) vocal style. No keyboards or drum samples were used during the recording, and the overall sound brings the feel of the heavy ’90s. The drums on Dark Matter were recorded in Kiev, Ukraine, while the remainder was produced in various Moscow studios. The lyrics deal with a variety of topics, including science fiction, space travel, mysticism, fantasy and adventure. The cover art was designed by W. Smerdulak (ARKONA).

The band is planning its very first gigs for the autumn of 2015 in promotion of Dark Matter, after which DISTANT SUN will begin work on a sophomore full-length.

VALDUR – Sierra Mountains Blackened Death Merchants Emerge From Their Crypts With The Infernal Fruits Of “Pathetic Scum” – Artwork + Track Listing Revealed

Posted in Metal, metal bands, Music, rock music with tags , , , , on June 14, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Valdur - Pathetic Scum - promo album cover pic - 2015 - #061415VMOSLN

Following an extended slumber, Mammoth Lake, California-based black/death merchants, VALDUR, emerge from their crypts with the infernal fruits of latest offering, lovingly dubbed Pathetic Scum.

The follow-up to 2013’s soul-devouring At War With full-length, which Meat Mead Metal appropriately heralded for filling, “that void of anger and disengagement with society that may be darkening your heart,” Pathetic Scum was tracked entirely at the band’s clandestine Bloody Mountain Bunker, mixed by drummer Matthew, mastered by Dan at Morbid Mastering and offers up seven cruel odes of audio abhorrence as only VALDUR can conjure.

Featuring the addition of new guitarist, Vuke, the record delivers a blizzardy onslaught of warring riffs, bestial blasts, wrath-infused vocal offensives and an overwhelming atmosphere of pandemonium, trepidation and all-encompassing ruthlessness. Indeed, Pathetic Scum is a true testament of a diseased society gone sour and maintains VALDUR’s place as one of America’s best kept extreme metal secrets.

Relays VALDUR, from the tombs, “Guitarist/vocalist Samuel is still with us so to speak, but he is so busy with personal/family matters at the moment. Vuke, new guitarist, is not a replacement, but a full-time member of VALDUR. And for live dates this spring, Roskva will be on vocals again. And we have William on bass and Matthew on drums. We all appreciate anyone who takes the time in this world to have a listen to our music. It is built and molded by our own hands to the form and shape that we like. With these new songs, we give you something different yet again along the obscure VALDUR timeline…”

Pathetic Scum – Track Listing:
1.Tank Torture
2. Impending Doom
3. Blessings Of The Goat
4. Pathetic Scum
5. Incantre Pt. II
6. Morbid Emanations

Featuring past and current members of Weverin, Endless Blizzard and Plutocracy, VALDUR was forged at the turn of the century in a small mountain town located in the pulsating heart of the Sierra Mountains, where the Death Valley desert lands meet the ascending Mt. Whitney and where the unholy collective dwells without interference of fashionable scenes or rulebooks.

VALDUR 2015:
Vuke – guitars
William – bass
Matthew – drums
Roskva – (live) vocals

Pathetic Scum will be officially unveiled digitally and in digipak format via the band’s own Bloody Mountain Records on June 30th, 2015.

Wombbath - Downfall Rising - promo album cover pic - 2015 - #8814MOCS

BIO:

Having been around since 1990, Wombbath was without a doubt part of the legendary Swedish Death Metal scene that came to influence bands from around the world, and still is to this day. After a few releases including the classic full length Internal Caustic Torments, they disbanded. After years of playing in different bands (In thy dreams, Skineater etc.) original member Håkan felt the urge to play buzz saw driven Death Metal, the way it was done back in the day, again. When Håkan re-animated Wombbath, the thought was to record a new album with the use of old friends and musicians he knew would be able to channel his vision of what Wombbath is and to keep it purely as a studio project.

Along the journey Håkan picked up Jonny as a full-time member and the duo realized that this album was becoming something too big to keep as a studio project. So a search for a full line-up began. After a few hit and misses he finally found the right people to join him and take this rumbling Death Metal monster to its fullest potential. Wombbath has been around since 1990 and this is where the real journey begins!

Symphonic Melodeath Act ARCHAEA Announce CD Release Date Of Full-Length “Catalyst”

Posted in Heavy Metal, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music with tags , , , , on June 12, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Archaea - promo band pic - 2015 - #0309AMOS

When does a Gothenburg melodeath band not sound like a Gothenburg melodeath band? When they’re Archaea, who roll out a hybrid of thrashy yet symphonic leanings in their melodeath. Markus Heidarsson has a whiff of Ola Englund about his guitar playing, particularly in the solos, playing against the harsh roar of Nils Bossius and the tightly wound rhythm section. Orchestral stabs punctuate tracks such as “Silhouette”, while “Vacuum” revels in a circus-like atmosphere, and “Salt” dances around a piano and strings melody amid the groovy stomp. Rounding out on “Sol” is a simple yet stunning finale, far removed from metal.

In their own words, Archaea describe their lyrical themes as “describing struggles on a personal and global scale, elusive antagonists and the unyielding indifferent elements”, although “Quad Damage” reveals the band’s love of video games with a sly reference.

The band have revealed the release date for the physical version of Catalyst, set as 28th August 2015. The CD comes in a digipak with stunning artwork and photos from Demithréa Mikulasi and Jessica Blomé.

Archaea - - Catalyst - promo album cover pic - 2015 - #0612MOAMD

Bio:

Archaea was founded in 2007 by the Heidarsson brothers Hannes and Markus, on keyboard and guitar. After a few intense formative years in the Gothenburg underground scene, Archaea set its sights putting their songs to tape. During this process Archaea was radically reshaped, with half the original lineup making way for new talent in guitarist Magnus Lindegård, drummer Alexander Molnar, bassist Richard Mikulasi and former guitarist Nils Bossius Klintenberg switching to take center stage as vocalist.

Despite little studio experience, they built their own studio to record the first album Catalyst during 2014. With the help of Johan Treptow for mixing and mastering, and with original artwork by Demithréa Mikulasi, Catalyst has turned out to be a creation that surpassed expectations.

Catalyst is an album that showcases the current form of Archaea, as well as capturing material from throughout the band’s existence. Ranging from crushing darkness to brilliant melody, with sharp contrasts and fluently shifting dynamics, Catalyst constitutes an intense musical journey. Archaea is now eager to unleash their unique form of melodic death metal upon the world!

Archaea are:
Nils Bossius – Vocals
Hannes Heidarsson – Keyboard
Markus Heidarsson – Guitar
Magnus Lindegård – Guitar
Richard Mikulasi – Bass
Alexander Molnar – Drums

Support on these dates will come from two Pagan Records bands that have already performed together plenty: Furia and Bloodthirst. Dates and ticket info below.

To the black metal connoisseur, Furia should not need an introduction. They are one of the most important bands to come out of the Polish underground in the last ten years and their latest release, Nocel, has received overwhelming praise with No Clean Singing calling it “a fascinating album that won’t grow old quickly” while Zero Tolerance Magazine named it “an eccentric BM album with something for everyone”.

Check out Nocel via Bandcamp: https://paganrecords.bandcamp.com/album/nocel

Calling themselves “hateful antichristian thrash”, Bloodthirst deliver just that and some more: their thrash consists of angry and brutal black metal with a few drops of that old-school Swedish death metal which we all love. With three full-lengths under their belts, the band has become an important name in the Polish underground. Their latest release is Chalice of Contempt (2014) and should be tasty for fans of Aura Noir, Desaster and Destroyer 666.

Living Colour is wrapping up work on their fifth album, Shade. In a recent interview with Loudwire, singer Corey Glover said of the new album, “As time progresses, a shadow falls and it’s about the progression of time. We’re trying to dissect and really take the roots of the music that created us and take it to task.” Andre Betts, who has previously worked with the band, returned to produce a few tracks on the new offering.

Reid, in a feature for Guitar World, explained the album is influenced by Reid’s interest in how “the blues, hard rock and metal are connected. We’re not going to do a blues-rock record but the blues is very integral and important. So that conversation has been the underpinning of what we’ve been doing.”

Living Colour is: Will Calhoun (drums), Corey Glover (vocals), Vernon Reid (guitar) and Doug Wimbish (bass).

RISING – Danish Metal Outfit Announces New Lineup; Recording Of Third Album Confirmed For This Fall

Posted in Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, rock music with tags , , , on June 10, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Rising - promo band pic - Danish Metal Band - 2015 - #061015RMOSW

Danish metal combo, RISING, has reformed with a new full-time studio and live lineup, and will return to the scene in 2015 with new live performances and the recording of their third LP.

Since the band’s formation in 2008 and the release of their self-titled debut EP in 2009, RISING has been an incredibly promising and uncompromising act on the metal scene, both locally and internationally. After two DIY EPs, the band displayed their relentless, crushing sound, fierce musicianship and a strong sense for melody and songwriting on two full-length albums, To Solemn Ash (2011) and Abominor (2013).

RISING backed the initial EPs and the debut album with several tours in Denmark and mainland Europe, along with festival appearances such as Roskilde, Copenhell and Hultsfred. Yet, as momentum was building, so was also tension within the band and just after the recording of Abominor, the trio disbanded, leaving the future of RISING and the new album uncertain. Abominor subsequently saw its release on guitarist Jacob Krogholt’s newly founded label Indisciplinarian, but no shows we’re played in connection with the release.

Unwillingly seeing the band dissolved, main composer Krogholt quickly teamed up with original drummer Martin Niemann, a member between 2008 and 2010, with the intention of carrying on the band, if the original chemistry of the two founding members remained intact. The initial jams in the fall of 2013 proved that the spark was indeed present and over the next year and a half the duo wrote a wide variety of material, which was to be the backbone of the next album. Along the way, several musicians were tried out, in December 2014 new members started to enter the band. Now, after two years of writing, demoing and trying out new musicians for the band, the new RISING lineup is finally complete.

RISING 2015:
Morten Grønnegaard – Vocals
Jacob Krogholt – Guitars
Carl Peter – Guitars
Bjarke Lassen – Bass
Martin Niemann – Drums

Rising - Band Logo - 2015 - #061015SMORHY

RISING has written eleven new songs planned for the band’s third album, which is to be recorded in August with producer Jacob Bredahl (By The Patient, The Kandidate, etc.) at his Dead Rat Studios in Aarhus, Denmark. The album will be mixed by notable American metal producer Sanford Parker (Woven Hand, Minsk, Indian, etc.) and mastered by the Brad Boatright (Sleep, Nails, Beastmilk) at Audiosiege.

The new material is undeniably RISING‘s core sound, filled with the crushing heaviness and melodic sensibilities inherited in Jacob Krogholt’s riffing and songwriting fiercely pushed onwards by Martin Niemann’s aggressive and dynamic drumming, yet fresh sonic elements are introduced by the new members of the band. Firstly, the most notable change to the sound is new lead singer Morten Grønnegaard and his melodic, yet still raw and powerful approach, handing the band and the forthcoming album a broader appeal and a more diverse expression. Carl Peter’s entrance as guitarist marks an expansion of the RISING sound, adding strength, more textures and classic twin guitar work, and along with Bjarke Lassen’s organic and heavy bass work, RISING of today is a band with an intact crushing energy, yet with bigger variation and dynamics.

RISING‘s as-yet-untitled third album is expected to be released in the spring of 2016, backed by touring in Denmark and abroad. As for now, the band is hard at work finalizing the album pre-production, and is planning a few Danish comeback shows in November after the album recordings, which will mark the first live appearances from the band in two-and-a-half years.

Instrumental demo excerpts of several new RISING songs can be streamed throughout June RIGHT HERE.

In the US, Earsplit Distro is exclusively carrying RISING’s Abominor LP HERE, and also carries the To Solemn Ash LP HERE and CD HERE. RISING’s full line of merch and releases can be ordered internationally via the Indisciplinarian webshop HERE.
