ABNORMALITY are a young Death Metal band that exhibits the talent, energy and drive to go very far in our Metal world. ExperiencingABNORMALITYlive has only solidified my previously positive Metal opinion about them BIG time. Originating from Massachusetts and fronted by vocalist Mallika Sundaramurthy, ABNORMALITY are signed to Metal Blade Records. I was fortunate to witness the live Death Metal fury of ABNORMALITY at Oddbody’s Music Room, in Dayton, Ohio, on May 7th, of this year.

With ABNORMALITY‘s new studio album Mechanisms of Omniscience just being released on April 29th, they are touring to support their Death Metal album achievement; supporting mega Metal monsters BATTLECROSS, SUFFOCATION and the legendary SOULFLY. This is quite an impressive supporting slot to have, considering the enormous influence that SUFFOCATION has had on the Death Metal family and the unparalleled Metal history of Max Cavalera’s SOULFLY. Whoa.

Being in the pit for any Metal show at my age now is usually not that stinking easy. I do feel the hits, slaps and random punches more than I used to, say, twenty-five years ago. Despite my being older, I am more wiser; therefore being up-front and against the stage for ABNORMALITY was a no-brainer for me! I took the numerous hits! F*ck yeah. I wanted to be a part of Death Metal history, being able to say I experiencedABNORMALITY as close as I could get! This band is that fun to see and hear up-close; combined with their Death Metal assault, grooves, vibes and obvious future potential, it’s freaking bragging rights to only see them this way and not from afar.

ABNORMALITY played to a packed house at Oddbody’s, with their battalion of fans that were unmistakably in attendance. Forget about the song list here; I was too busy taking in ABNORMALITY‘s deadly wall-of-sound, while doing my damn best to sustain the physical barrage upon my body. That’s Metal. Pure and f*%kin simple. Mallika Sundaramurthy‘s guttural vocals are eye-popping! Do not underestimate Mallika. Her stage presence is commanding, while working the fans into a Metal frenzy, regardless of her petite size and seriously cute looks. Mallika’s vocals and the entire band, without a doubt, kicked my ears into Death Metal submission! Amazing.
I obviously had a blast being a part of this ABNORMALITY moment in Metal time. For thirty minutes or so I didn’t care about any other band in the world; my entire Metal soul was focused on what I was feeling and hearing from ABNORMALITY. The body hits I was taking didn’t matter; nor did my head getting dizzy spells from the entire pit encounter. This was my Metal moment with ABNORMALITY and I was going to savor every f*#kin second of it; as well I did. Metal Be Thy Name. – Stone
Pictured below is the psyched-out me, with Mallika Sundaramurthy. Metal be thy name, what a funtastic night!

Blistering anarchist Black Metal unit, ISKRA, has teamed up with Southern Lord for the CD release of their latest LP, Ruins. Approaching the most fearsome of all genres from a foundation in filthy metallic crust, ISKRA has skillfully created an old school orthodox epic that their extensive back catalog has always been working towards, and in Ruins is executed in sublime, scathing style.
The Canadian collective, almost two decades into their journey as ISKRA, stands out as staunch advocates of anarchism, and reject all forms of oppressive mainstream ideologies such as communism, fascism and democracy. To underline this, they coined their unification of extreme punk anger and Black Metal sonics “anarchist metal,” separating themselves from other acts deemed as “extreme” or “radical” but lacking conviction or real menace.
It is certainly evident in their vitriolic offensives that they mean business, but most impressive is the sharp, refined songcraft that makes Ruins a compelling Black Metal record, regardless of your political (dis)orientation. The constantly shifting tremolo riffs and blasting drums are some of the most devastating and aggressive you will hear, and fans of Absu and early Immortal will find plenty to enjoy – ISKRA exerts overwhelming levels of energy and brutality in Ruins, outpacing and outwitting the vast majority.
ISKRA have toured across scores of countries with countless acts operating in various subsects of underground Punk and Metal and have built up a fearsome international reputation, demonstrated by their heavy patch presence on the battle jackets of the true. A wealth of DIY and independent label releases trails behind them, with numerous albums, splits and demos all available to download for free from their website in accordance with their principles.
Southern Lord will issue ISKRA‘s Ruins on digipak CD including a twenty-page booklet with lyrics and liner notes on July 1st.

Faithsedge is returning with ‘Restoration’, their third and most melodic release to date. Fronted by mastermind singer/songwriter Giancarlo Floridia, the band returns with a stellar line-up featuring Stryper bass player Tim Gaines, Ace Frehley / Mr. Big drummer Matt Starr and former Dokken guitarist Alex De Rosso. Both Keys and production have been handled by Alessandro Del Vecchio (Hardline/ Revolution Saints).

The approach is very melodic with an old school feel: 80’s style hooks, big drums, slamming bass, epic keys and big production. At the same time the album keeps a current up to date feel with lyric content of today’s world mixed with a competitive metal feel. Giancarlo’s songwriting approach mixed with each members experience and skills takes the album to new heights .
With different supergroups that come and go, Faithsedge is more than just that, the band members worked together as a tight team and the result and chemistry show in the end result . The album will be released on Scarlet Records in Europe and North America on June 24th and on Spiritual Beast in Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan on June 15th.
Stone Says: Giancarlo Floridia’s vocals sound their best ever! A Melodic Hard Rockin’ serving of mandatory ear candy! Sweet guitar solo! This is a song and sound that has kick-started my Summer into a Rockin’ daze of old school cool! Dig it!
Kansas Death Metal squad, UNMERCIFUL, will drop the devious fruits of their long-awaited new full-length this Summer via Unique Leader Records. Titled Ravenous Impulse, the record features the drum demolition of John Lonstreth (Dim Mak, Origin, ex-Gorguts etc.).
Comments UNMERCIFUL guitarist Clint Appelhanz (ex-Origin) of the band’s forthcoming full-length, “It’s been ten years since the release of Unmercifully Beaten and we’ve had an up and down ride through the years. We are proud to announce the release of Ravenous Impulse to mark a new time for the band. Ravenous Impulse features a collaboration of song writing styles from [bassist] Jeremy [Turner; ex-Origin], [guitarist] Justin [Payne] and myself. Coupled with John Lonstreth’s approach to drums and Kris [Bolton; D.F.W.B.]’s vocal delivery, we feel that our sound is in a new place while still maintaining the band’s identity. Concepts behind most of the lyrical content mainly deal with violent instinct and diabolical human behaviors. We feel these subjects and themes are more realistic and relative to everyday society and more terrifying. Expect a classic Death Metal sound with modern speed.”
Founded in 2001, UNMERCIFUL released its debut, Unmercifully Beaten, in 2006. With intensive tour runs from 2006 through 2009 with the likes of Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus, Necrophagist, Decrepit Birth, Cryptopsy, and more, the band went through various personnel changes before deciding to disband in 2009. What started out as just a reunion show in 2012, quickly returned the band to working status. With consistent live shows and numerous metal fest appearances, the band released a self-titled demo in 2014 as a first step in the process to completing its first full-length release in nearly a decade. After the abrupt departure of drummer James King, John Longstreth was enlisted to record drums for Ravenous Impulse.
In July 2015, UNMERCIFUL entered Chapman Studios (Origin, Tech N9NE) to work with longtime producer and friend, Robert Rebeck. Longstreth laid down a phenomenal recording on drums. The rest of the album was recorded and mixed at Clint Appelhanz’s own Waveworks Studio. The process was long and tedious, but the end result is nothing short of sonically devastating. Ravenous Impulse raises the bar of relentless, unmerciful, aggressive, and plainly brutal Death Metal. Look for Ravenous Impulse July 22nd, 2016 on Unique Leader Records.

Australia can be a harsh, hostile place to live. It is fitting that a continent of arid deserts and every creature poisonous and toothy has produced so much great extreme metal. The Melbourne-based band has actually been around five years now, building their name and sound across a string of splits and EPs, and through relentless live shows at home and abroad. Now at last comes their debut full-length Immortalized In Suffering, just in time for their first U.S. tour.
