This iconic studio album was originally released back in September of 1970; we’re talking 45 years ago! I was only 4 years and 4 months old when this album hit the shelves! If you don’t own Paranoid, you obviously watch and are a fan of Little House On The Prairie. Hail Black Sabbath!
On May 21st, 2015 – Veil Of Maya’s new studio album, Matriarch, debuts at #58 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart. Matriarch also debuts at #2 on the Billboard Hard Rock Albums Chart! Hell and yeah! Long live Veil Of Maya!
Legendary metal frontman and Housecore Records founder, Philip H. Anselmo, is bringing his horror-themed film and metal festival back for a third year. After a great ride in Austin, the festival will kick off in San Antonio, Texas at the Aztec Theater on November 13th – 15th, 2015.
The decision to return was driven by the desire to honor his friend and festival co-founder, Corey Mitchell, who tragically passed away last October. Mitchell was the driving creative force behind the festival’s success and Anselmo believes there is no better way to pay tribute to his friend than to carry on for a third year.
“I’ve got a great team in place to help make this what Corey and I wanted it to be,” he says. “There are a lot of mixed emotions here because no one can replace him. But, we know he would want this to continue and so that’s what we’re going to do. We miss him and think about him every day.”
Bands already confirmed to play are Suffocation, Autopsy, Cripple Bastards, Nails, SYk & DalilaKayros, YOB, Eyehategod, Child Bite, Warbeast and many more to be announced soon. Maryland Deathfest co-founder Ryan Taylor will be booking bands this year and will help Anselmo craft a musical lineup that would make Mitchell proud.
In addition to showcasing the best in extreme metal, the festival will screen film gems from the personal vaults of both Anselmo and Mitchell. Horror filmmakers are encouraged to submit their films and winners will be selected in various categories and given the coveted Rot-Scar Award. “When Corey and I started this thing, it was important to us that we help independent filmmakers get their incredible work discovered,” Anselmo continues. “Nothing has changed, in that respect.”
Tickets to go on sale soon! Stay tuned for additional announcements.
On May 20th, 1980 – KISS released their eighth studio album: Unmasked. Shocking Fact Alert #1: Although not credited, the drummer for this entire album was Anton Fig and notPeter Criss. Now that the shock has hopefully subsided, onwards we go. Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons and Ace Frehley do play on every song on Unmasked. I just had to reinforce that info, just in case someone was wondering and started to panic. (I pause to laugh and quickly regain control).
This album was released via Casablanca Records, with a large poster inserted inside the album’s jacket. My two favorite songs from this album are: Is That You? and What Makes The World Go ‘Round. I even dig the song Shandi. Truth be told, I really like this KISS album and have no problem recommending it to anyone. This isn’t the greatest KISS album ever and it isn’t the worst either. The Elder will always be the freaking worst KISS album ever recorded; that is a fact and tell ’em Stone says so.
Above: The front cover to my KISS Unmasked album. Some years ago I had flood waters destroy my record collection, save for a dozen or so. Yes, that life event super-sucked infected goat testicles. However, this album was one that was elevated above the water. Go figure.
My first copy of Unmasked was an 8-track version. I bought this 8-track, with loot from my mother, from a (now defunct) department store called Caldor. Around 1983, I traded my Billy SquierEmotions In Motionvinyl for a used copy of Unmasked on vinyl, while in high school. A decent trade, I believe. Long ago trade aside, Billy Squier is alright in my Metal book. The 8-track and 8-track player I had are long gone. That kinda sucks. Some years ago, I finally upgraded to CD, with Unmasked. Why it took me so long to upgrade Unmasked to CD? I just don’t know, go figure.
Shocking Fact Alert #2: Did you know that the Village People were signed to Casablanca Records too? KISS and The Village People shared the same record label. That should keep you up at night tossing and turning. WTF!?
That’s me holding my Unmasked poster, above! Whoa!
I’ve always enjoyed looking at the album artwork for Unmasked. Who was the artist? Victor Stabin. You can learn more about this exceptional artist and view his works by clicking here: http://www.victorstabin.com.
Above: The back cover to the KISS Unmasked CD, with track listing. Whoa!
This KISS album has alwaysreminded me of Summer. Once again, I just don’t know, go figure. I have traded away many, many terrific items, throughout the years. My vinyl of Unmasked and its poster I could never think of parting with. Then again, who knows? Go figure and Metal be thy name. – Stone

But for even longer than that, I’ve cared, studied and thought deeply about the human condition and how we interact with each other and the world around us. On this day in KISSTORY – May 19th, 1978, KISS performed a free concert at Magic Mountain Amusement Park in Valencia, California to film the concert scenes for the “KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park.” The concert took place in the parking lot of Magic Mountain. Tickets were distributed through a California radio station and approximately 10,000 fans attended the show. KISS performed a full regular set list and then lip-synched “Love Gun” and “Shock Me” for the movie. Between the concert and filming the extra scenes, the shoot lasted several hours and the band members interacted with the crowd through out the event.
Paul on the concert and film shoot:
“I remember it all like it was yesterday. Doing a film and a concert in a band where some were barely speaking to each other and others not speaking at all was even weirder than the script! I still can’t figure out the end of the film.”

Stone Says: Man, was I ever thrilled to see this KISS movie when I was a kid. I didn’t care less about the cheesy nature of this entire movie, hell, it was KISS! I grew up on black & white television; therefore a KISS network film was a spectacle for me. It’s been (gulp) decades since I’ve watched this KISS film.
I marvel at how KISS had such an impact on Pop Culture back in the 70’s and have continued such impact to this day. In my Metal opinion, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley are marketing geniuses. Really. Metal be thy name.
On this day in KISSTORY – May 19, 1992, KISS released their sixteenth studio album: REVENGE. This was the first studio album to feature Eric Singer on drums. REVENGE was dedicated to the late and great Eric Carr and features the demo he played drums on: Carr Jam 1981. Alongside Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, Bruce Kulick was the lead guitarist on this album.
REVENGE debuted at #6 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Charts and spent 23 weeks on the chart. In my Metal opinion, this was the best KISS studio album since 1982’s Creatures Of The Night. I absolutely love the song Domino, featuring Gene Simmons on lead vocals. I still have the cassette version of REVENGE. Yes, I did upgrade it to CD! Metal be thy name! – Stone
REVENGE – Track List:
Unholy / Take It Off / Tough Love / Spit / God Gave Rock & Roll to You II / Domino / Heart of Chrome / Thou Shalt Not / Every Time I Look At You / Paralyzed / I Just Wanna / Carr Jam 1981

Is it fair to state that as metalheads we spend a lot of our time checking out new records? Hunting out the next big thing that we can introduce our friends to, something new, and something that evokes the feelings we once got on an almost daily basis back in the day when first discovering metal.
However, on occasion we’re brought back to the classics, the old Metallica records, early Annihilator and so forth; the exact records we discovered on the voyage of metal discovery. Yet sometimes those old classics just don’t quite hit the spot… And that’s exactly what makes bands such as Prowler a breath of fresh fucking air. Everything we’ve heard before is there, it’s familiar, but it’s new and that’s the fundamental difference.
Formed in 2010, Prowler went on to release four EP’s and a box set before signing to Slaney Records to release their debut album After You in 2013, and The New Blood EP later that same year. The thrash titans hailing from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina are now on the verge of unleashing yet another beast of a record, their second full length entitled From The Shadows. Overseen by Roger Lian, the same man who was responsible for Slayer’s South Of Heaven and countless others including Overkill, Pantera and Damageplan; you can be assured a great production.
The world won’t go on fire, journalists won’t be scrambling over each other to make up new genre terms (thank god) but that is exactly the point! What you will find is a sterling record in the vein of old school thrash, heavy, destructive and as brazen as the first waves of the genre and unleashed by a troupe of young fiery musicians with the same raw energy captured back in the day on the likes of Ride The Lightning.
Artwork (as seen above) was completed by Spanish artist Noël Puente.
From The Shadows – Track List:
1. R.O.T.L.D
2. Out Of The Fog
3. I Am Wolf
4. The Thing Not Seen
5. Pet Sematary (The Ramones Cover)
6. Return To The Lot
7. Death On Wheels
8. Creature Of The Black
From The Shadows is out 20th July via Slaney Records.

On May 17th, 1976 – The legendary Rainbow released their second studio album: Rainbow Rising. The band lineup was amazing and included: Ronnie James Dio on vocals, Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Jimmy Bain on bass, Cozy Powell on drums and Tony Carey on keys. Whoa, man!
On May 17th, 1986 – The mighty Van Halen had their hit single Why Can’t This Be Love, ranked at #3, on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. Whoa! This song is featured on Van Halen’s seventh studio album from 1986: 5150. This album was the first to feature Sammy Hagar aka The Red Rocker on vocals.
PAUL DI’ANNO
Paul Di’Anno was born on May 17th, 1959, in England. Happy Birthday, Paul Di’Anno! Hell and whoa! The legendary Paul Di’Anno is world-famous as a Heavy Metal singer and songwriter. He was the first recording vocalist with the iconic Iron Maiden; being featured on their first two studio albums: Iron Maiden (1980) and Killers (1981). Pictured above is Paul Di’Anno’s live album from 2014: The Beast Arises.
Above: Battlezone – Children Of Madness (1987)
During his post Iron Maiden years, Paul Di’Anno had enjoyed musical success with his bands Di’Anno, Battlezone and Killers, while giving it an impressive try with supergroup Gogmagog. There have been numerous guest appearances by Paul Di’Anno on other artists albums, along with being featured on many tribute albums. Paul Di’Anno’s solo career continues to this day.
Paul Di’Anno was also the vocalist on Iron Maiden’s kick-ass live EP from 1981: Maiden Japan.
That’s it at the top! That’s my Jani Lane autographed trading card and it’s certified authentic (see photo below). This unbelievable piece of Rock ‘N’ Roll history was seeded into packs of Upper Deck Spectrum Of Stars trading cards, which were initially sold around 2008; that’s the date printed on the back of this card, anyways. I bought this Jani Lane gem a couple of years before he passed away. A sports card dealer in Allentown, Pennsylvania had this card for sale and was asking $10 for it; I offered $8 instead and the dealer accepted. Whoa! Two other of these autographed trading cards that I own are: Miljenko Matijevic (Steelheart vocalist) and Don Dokken. Whoa, again!
To this day, I am very saddened that Jani Lane could not find the strength to battle his addictions. Jani Lane was a bona fide vocal and songwriting talent; he was a huge reason as to why Warrant became so successful, back in the day. Jani Lane also released a solo album back in 2003 titled: Back Down To One.
In 2008, Jani Lane’s (supergroup) band, Saints Of The Underground, released their debut studio album: Love The Sin, Hate The Sinner. I don’t own Jani’s solo album; yet I do own his S.O.T.U. release and it’s pretty damn good. You can read my abbreviated review for this album, (which I originally wrote back in 2008), by clicking the link below:
Kicking any addiction isn’t easy. I have been sober since September of 2014 and it is an inner struggle every day to overcome. Substance addiction is a disease. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Alcohol was never my buddy looking out for me. If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, stay strong, find help at all costs and please remember you are not alone. – Stone

This is Metal Odyssey’s second installment of UFO Themes On Rock Album Covers: Through The Years. If you are fascinated with memorable album cover art and/or UFO’s, then this post will surely make any overcast day of yours a bit more tolerable. Metal be thy name. – Stone
Boston – Don’t Look Back (1978/Epic Records)
Anyone that doesn’t own this second studio album from Boston needs to put down their prune juice and take a course in Rock History.
IRON MAIDEN – Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son (1988)
Yes, there are a few UFO’s hovering around (a half of an) Eddie, on this album cover. This was another cover art masterpiece from the great Derek Riggs. Whoa!
ASIA – Aqua (1992)
The above UFO could also be considered a USO (Unidentified Submerged Object), if the imagery on this album cover is under water. Confused? So am I. By the way, this ASIA CD is out-of-print and costs just under $40 (U.S.) on Amazon.com. Whoa.
RUSH – Clockwork Angels Tour (2013)
I cannot identify that large and strange-looking aircraft above that concert stage while RUSH is performing; therefore it is a creepy UFO. ‘Nuff said.

Crypt Of The Devil, the latest platter of brutality from iconic death metal merchants, SIX FEET UNDER, crushed the Billboard Charts this week debuting at #13 on the Hard Music Chart, #13 on the Heatseekers Chart, #32 on the Independent Albums Chart, #49 on the Rock Albums Chart, #120 on the Physical Albums Chart and #161 on the Top 200 Current Albums Chart!
In Canada, Crypt Of The Devil placed at #33 on the Hard Music Chart and #198 on the Top Sellers Chart. On the Official Top 100 Charts in Europe, the record earned the #42 spot in Germany marking it SIX FEET UNDER‘s highest charting record pillaging Bringer Of Blood‘s German entry at #36 and True Carnage‘s entry at #40. Additionally, Crypt Of The Devil nabbed the #20 spot on the Media Markt/Saturn Charts.
Composed by notorious growl tsar, Chris Barnes with Cannabis Corpse bassist/vocalist Phil “Landphil” Hall, Crypt Of The Devil serves as SIX FEET UNDER‘s eleventh studio offering and delivers ten venomous odes of murderous death metal barbarity ornamented in Barnes’ haunting prose. Surveying the blackest depths of the human mind, the record is disquieting in both sound, mind and spirit.
Sample the album in all its menacing glory, courtesy of High Times, at THIS LOCATION as well as the band’s Mitch Massie (Cattle Decapitation, Murder Construct, The Locust etc.) directed “Open Coffin Orgy” video HERE.
SIX FEET UNDER began as a side project while Barnes – owner of what would become one of the most dominating, groundbreaking and instantly distinguishable voices of the death metal genre – was fronting Cannibal Corpse. SIX FEET UNDER would eventually become a full-fledged entity in 1995 and now stands among the longest standing and successful acts in death metal history, with all but their debut appearing on a Billboard chart.
Crypt Of The Devil is out now on Metal Blade Records. Various order bundles are available today at metalblade.com/sixfeetunder.

(NEW YORK) – May 15, 2015. Atria Books has acquired North American and audio rights to a memoir by Phil Collen, lead guitarist for rock band Def Leppard for more than 30 years. ADRENALIZED: Life, Def Leppard, and Beyond, written with veteran journalist and author Chris Epting and scheduled for publication on October 27, is the first book written by a member of the group that holds claim to being one of only five rock bands with two original studio albums selling over 10 million copies in the U.S. Featuring personal, never-before-seen photos of Collen and his band mates on stage and off, Adrenalized is a fascinating account of the failures, triumphs, challenges, and rock-hard dedication it takes to make dreams come true.
“It’s fascinating for even me to look back at my life from working in a factory at 16 years old to eventually traveling the world selling over one hundred million records and all the experiences that come with that journey,” Collen says. “I realize that there is a constant evolution of ‘me’ that is still a work in progress even as I continue to be vital and dynamic in my same occupation for the past 35 years well into my late fifties.”
Def Leppard will be touring this summer with Styx and Tesla. The 48-date outing will kick off in Tampa, Fla., on June 23 and will wrap in Jacksonville., on Oct. 17.
The book was acquired by Atria’s Vice President and Editorial Director Peter Borland from Peter McGuigan at Foundry Literary+Media.
Phil Collen is the lead guitarist of the legendary rock band Def Leppard. He has been a vegetarian for thirty-one years, alcohol-free for twenty-eight years, and vegan for over four years, busting the myth of the classic rock star stereotype.
