On This Day In METAL History – April 26th… From MACHINE HEAD To HALESTORM

On April 26th, 1986 – Van Halen reached #1 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart for the first time with their seventh studio album: 5150. This was Van Halen’s (or Van Hagar, if you like) first album with the dynamic Sammy Hagar as their vocalist. 5150 spent three weeks on top of this chart. By the way, this 5150 album stirs up some really cool and good-times memories for me! Whoa.

On this day in 1986 – Metal legends Judas Priest peaked at #17 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart with their tenth studio album: Turbo. This album went on to sell one million (plus) copies in the United States, alone. By the way, this is my least favorite Judas Priest album and yet I do “like” it. The song Parental Guidance is featured on Turbo and it is one of the lamest Judas Priest songs ever recorded, in my Metal opinion. The title track is just plain strange. Whatever.

On April 26th, 2015 – Pennsylvania’s very own Hard Rock ambassadors, HALESTORM, have their third studio album, Into The Wild Life, debuting at #5, on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart. Congratulations, HALESTORM! Yeah!

On this day in 2015 – Aerosmith’s Greatest Hits makes a return to the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart, ranked at #151. This fantastic compilation of Aerosmith hits was originally released back in 1980, spending 44 non-consecutive weeks on this chart and peaking at #43. Folks, this album has spanned 4 decades of being a hot seller! Did someone say, timeless Hard Rock? Whoa and holy Metal!!

On April 26th, 2015 – The eighth studio album, Bloodstone & Diamonds, from the mighty MACHINE HEAD, is ranked at #33, on the iTunes Top 100 Heavy Metal Albums Chart. MACHINE HEAD kicks METAL ass like there’s no tomorrow, on this album, by the way. If you don’t own this MACHINE HEAD album, you are a closet Bay City Rollers fan. Whoa!

WOODEN STAKE – Occult Death Doom Duo Releases Second Full-Length, Via Razorback Records

Occult death doom ensemble, WOODEN STAKE, rises from their moldy tomb armed with their long-awaited second long player, A Feast Of Virgin Souls. Out now on Razorback Records, the ten-track offering boasts over forty demonic minutes of dark, NWOBHM-infused tracks of lurching brutality led by the possessed banshee vocals of vocalist/bassist Vanessa Nocera. WOODEN STAKE emerged in 2010 with the release of their Vampire Plague Exorcism demo which earned the critical exaltation of the underground extreme doom metal scene. A tidal wave of seven-inch releases, including a split with Druid Lord in 2011 (Altsphere Production) and Blizaro (Razorback Records) the same year, would ensue. WOODEN STAKE undraped their debut full-length, Dungeon Prayers & Tombyard Serenades, later that year via Razorback and again reaped critical acclaim from underground metallers globally, including Darkthrone’s Fenriz who chose WOODEN STAKE as his Band Of The Month.

The album received thousands of plays on YouTube and spread like plague to those who craved extreme doom/death metal with a simultaneously melodic and violent edge. Blabbermouth hailed, “The combination of [former guitarist/drummer] Sarantopoulos’ mighty, dread-spreading riffs and Nocera’s macabre tales and behemoth bass lines constitute a big reason why Dungeon Prayers & Tombyard Serenades is such a compelling release,” while American Aftermath noted, “the music is fuzzy and droning, and the atmosphere sends a cool chill down your spine, but there is something about this band that makes even the most morbid songs seem nice and soothing.”

Added Cvlt Nation, “the band is incredibly atmospheric and have managed to carve out their own unique style that blends everything from Black Sabbath to Obituary to Hellhammer to Jex Thoth to Electric Wizard,” furthering, “The spoken word vocal approach pushes you into a surreal state of melancholy which doesn’t last long as it is soon destroyed by some earth-shattering, old-school riffage and hypnotic gloomy atmosphere.”

In 2012, WOODEN STAKE unleashed At The Stroke Of Midnight, a collection of demo and EP material as well as exclusive canticle, “Night Of The Banshee,” recorded specifically for the release. The next two years saw Nocera busy with her two other projects, Skeletal Spectre and Howling. In 2015, WOODEN STAKE returns with the witchy wisdom of A Feast Of Virgin Souls. Featuring Nocera alongside new guitar player and drummer, Willie Wardlaw, the record is out now on Razorback Records with a future vinyl version on the horizon. AUTHOR & PUNISHER – One-Man Industrial Doom Unit To Kick Off US Tour; Trek Includes Stop At Stump Fest + Psycho California

Following a recent march through Europe alongside Atari Teenage Riot, one-man industrial doom sorcerer, Tristan Shone, more commonly known as AUTHOR & PUNISHER, will quake the stages of sixteen North American cities with his tectonic-shifting sound conjurings. Slated to embark today in Portland, Oregon at Stumpfest, Shone’s latest live incursion concludes with a stop at Psycho California Fest and serves as a precursor to the release of AUTHOR & PUNISHER‘s new full-length.

The as-yet-untitled long player, and first for Housecore Records, was captured at famed Nodferatu’s Lair in North Shore, Louisiana with label-founder Philip H. Anselmo and follows the critically adored Women & Children full-length, released in 2013 via Seventh Rule Recordings and currently available in a color vinyl configuration mirroring the AUTHOR & PUNISHER crest colors of yellow and black limited to 100 copies at THIS LOCATION.

SIG:AR:TYR – To Release New Album

Canadian Blackened Heavy Metal act SIG:AR:TYR are proud to announce that they will be releasing their new album Northen this fall.

While SIG:AR:TYR has in the past been known as atmospheric blackened folk, Northen shifts into more traditional Metal territory, while maintaining the dark sounds of earlier material.

The band’s mastermind (and sole permanent member) Daemonskald had the following to say about the album:

“The album deals with the end of the Viking age, and the adventures of the Norse in our own country, Canada. Unlike the permanent settlements in Greenland, their stay here was short-lived, and we are still discovering the extent of their travels, the artifacts from their small settlements, and unfolding the tales of their interaction with the native cultures here at the time. “Northen” is a tale of tribute to this small group of adventurers, who with a dynamic, and individualistic spirit, were still willing to throw stability and comfort aside to explore mysterious new places like Helluland, Markland, and Vinland, and try to be their own master in a changing world.”

These are brand new re-masters from their original analogue sources, exclusively produced for iTunes.

So of course I was very keen for the Maiden albums to be mastered in this way. The records have been available digitally before, when this medium first became a platform for music distribution but that was mastered with CDs in mind. The iTunes process involves a different approach and it’s great to finally deliver the music to our fans in as close to a pure and accurate sound as we could possibly achieve.For example, as most people know, I was never really happy with the sound on the first Maiden album but listening to it now, the guitars are louder, the drums more substantial and the overall tone is so very much improved in my opinion. Tony Newton and Ade Emsley who worked closely with me on the project did a terrific job recapturing everything from the original masters and together we’ve re- mastered them all digitally and I’m really happy with the results.”

Tony Newton adds:

“The process started with locating all of the original album mix tapes (or whichever format they were mixed to). Then the choice of analogue to digital converter was chosen for the most accurate capture to make it as close as possible to the sound of the mix as it was intended by the band. When a lot of these tapes were last captured it was in the 1980’s, early days of digital and only 44.1khz/16bit files were possible. On top of this the new A/D converters are far superior now, and of course it is possible to produce files of far higher resolution. The result of this is that the songs now sound more defined with added depth and warmth. I was very excited to be asked to be part of this project, I honestly feel that there is a massive improvement in the quality of these classic albums.”

GOATWHORE – Announces North American Headlining Dates With Support From Ringworm, Black Breath And Theories

Today, Louisiana’s GOATWHORE announces a North American headlining tour in support of their critically lauded full-length, Constricting Rage Of The Merciless. ARTILLERY – Denmark Thrash Veterans To Kick Off United Legions Tour 2015 + First Ever Shows In China Confirmed

ARTILLERY was forged in the Copenhagen suburb of Taastrup, Denmark in 1982 by Michael and Morten Stützer. TOTAL NEGATION: One-Man Blackened Doom Metal Venture To Release New Full-Length, Via Temple Of Torturous

One-man Blackened Doom Metal assault, TOTAL NEGATION, will unleash third full-length, Zeitzeuge, this May via Sweden-based Temple Of Torturous Records.

The follow-up to the 2013-issued Zur Späten Stunde | Zeiträume, which The Liar Of Filth fittingly dubbed a, “dark and challenging, yet ultimately very rewarding listening,” Zeitzeuge maintains the cold, eerie elements of its predecessor. The integration of instruments like the melodica and the vibraphone still intact, on Zeitzeuge master craftsman, Wiedergaenger, allows for more breathing room and breadth in his compositions.

Still cold, depressive and atmospherically corrosive, Wiedergaenger manages to merge primal Black Metal, Doom and Krautrock elements into a sound that’s at once lush, confounding, and apocalyptic. Cold, dire, twisted, and bedecked in Wiedergaenger’s intense German storytelling, Zeitzeuge relays the story of a contemporary witness, who breaks under the pressure of controlling the life and death of others.

5 METAL Albums I Can’t Live Without: The 90’s Edition, Part 1

Since we all love to revisit our favorite Metal albums from yesteryear, here are my Five Metal Albums I Cannot Live Without: The 90’s Edition, Part 1. This list is in no particular order and you can expect for me to include EP’s for this or future Metal discussions. If you cannot live without any of the following Metal albums as well, feel free to blab about it with a comment! Metal be thy name!

King Diamond – The Graveyard

King Diamond released 4 studio albums during the 90’s and The Graveyard is from 1996. Following his modus operandi, King Diamond’s The Graveyard is an evil concept album, one that never ceases to amaze and spook me, time after time.

My favorite song from this album is I Am; a King Diamond song that sends chills through each molecule of my body and it’s truly due to King Diamond’s jaw-dropping falsetto.

Queensrÿche – Empire

Queensrÿche’s fourth studio album, Empire, was released back in 1990. What a whiz-bang way to start off the 90’s decade for Queensrÿche! I still have my cassette version of Empire and yes I did upgrade it to CD. Jet City Woman is my favorite song from this album; it makes my face all flush and psyche-out shit like that. Whoa!

OVERKILL – Horrorscope

From 1991, Horrorscope is the fifth studio album released by The Garden State’s OVERKILL. I Metal worship this OVERKILL album!! Coma, the title track and OVERKILL’s cover version of the great Edgar Winter’s instrumental, Frankenstein, are 3 songs of pure Thrash Metal bliss! Please read below (OVERKILL – I Hear Black) for more reasoning as to why I love Horrorscope…

OVERKILL – I Hear Black

From 1993, I Hear Black is the sixth studio album released by New Jersey’s OVERKILL. This super-legendary Thrash Metal band stayed very busy during the 90’s, releasing 6 studio albums and a cover song album titled: Coverkill. Whoa, man!

I love this (and the above) OVERKILL album for it kept me solid company during the early 90’s; which was a very sad and trying time in my life. Yes, OVERKILL was there when I needed them most. I still have the cassettes of both titles and did not upgrade to CDs until around 2007.

The mighty W.A.S.P. released 4 studio albums during the 90’s! Hell, yeah they did and Blackie Lawless is a Metal Defender Of The Faith! Still Not Black Enough is the sixth studio album from W.A.S.P. and it was released back in 1995. Holy Metal shit, is this a tremendous W.A.S.P. album!

Blackie Lawless did not waste a micro note of space on this album, every song is an ass kicking that always makes me say (or think): thank you, Mr. Lawless and W.A.S.P., may I please have more sonic Metal beatings sirs?

My favorite song on this album is Rock and Roll To Death. Best Metal Buddy Scott Coverdale got me into W.A.S.P. in the 80’s and reintroduced me to W.A.S.P. in the Millennium Decade as well! ‘Nuff said. Enjoy the song below and Metal Be Thy Name!

Metal Odyssey Celebrates Its 6 Year Anniversary Today! Metal Be Thy Name!

Metal Odyssey Headquarters – My pup Ozzy (above) isn’t kidding, it’s been 6 years! It is March 1st, 2015 and it’s the 6 year anniversary of Metal Odyssey. Whoa! Shut the front door! Gather the villagers! My, how fast 6 years can fly by! Metal Odyssey was launched back on March 1st, 2009 (MMIX).

Back in 2009, The Walking Dead and Finding Bigfoot were not on television yet. Wow! In 2009 a pound of bacon cost $3.19 and a U.S. postage stamp cost 42 cents. Unreal! Six years ago, after an eleven year wait, the iconic KISS released a new studio album:

KISS Sonic Boom was released on October 6th, 2009.

During 2009 I was new to the blogosphere, thus I used about 200 or more “tags” with every post that was published on Metal Odyssey. I was such a nerd. Oops. I still am. Um, anyhow, take a look for yourself, as to how “tag crazy” I once was:

After 6 years with Metal Odyssey in my Metal life, I’ve learned quickly that there is always room for improvement and I don’t know everything. There are no laurels to rest on here. Each day I am grateful that other humans actually visit Metal Odyssey and hopefully it brings some kind of Metal joy to their lives; as Metal Odyssey has brought immeasurable Metal joy to mine. My love for Metal and Rock ‘N’ Roll hopefully shows, throughout these past 6 years of Metal Odyssey.

I thank every visitor (both random and loyal) and each subscriber to Metal Odyssey; you are ALL the reason why Metal Odyssey’s Metal wheels keep moving. To ALL the kick-ass Twitter followers, you RULE too! This is a 4 song EP that blasts its way through with the sonically mixed trio of Metal, Thrash and Punk. The duo that comprises Dissident Clone are: Patrick Morris on guitar/vocals and Chad Brunsell on drums.

I will admit without hesitation that this is one freaking fun EP to listen to! Underground, raw and retro all the way through, this EP is worth that full jar of rainy day beans you’re willing to let go of. Not only musically do Dissident Clone play the Metal, Thrash and Punk combination; Patrick Morris adjusts his vocals very capably based on which style is being played.

Dissident Clone packs an enormous wallop in just these 4 songs, I am very delighted to say. There’s even some groove Metal and haunting riffage going on with their song Eye Of The Wound. Kaotoxin Records Announces First Bands for Kaotoxin Fest #II

After a successful debut, the Kaotoxin Fest will return in 2015 for a second edition that will take place in Lille, France on December 5.

POWER TRIP – Texas Crossover Act Continues Raging Tour Schedule Into New Year

Since the 2013 release of their debut LP, Manifest Decimation, on Southern Lord, Texas maniacs, POWER TRIP, have toured incessantly, bringing their hyperactive brew of modernized-but-old-school thermonuclear crossover to ragers across multiple continents. The ongoing attack will continue into 2015, as the band has just announced a new bash of US tour dates in February and March, with their performance at Florida’s FYA Fest still confirmed before the year comes to a close.

First up, closing their crushing 2014 tour schedule down, POWER TRIP will bring their mayhem to the Fern Park, Florida-based FYA Fest, joining a bruising roster of hardcore acts including Down To Nothing, Incendiary, Code Orange, Cold World, Bitter End, Mammoth Grinder, Discourse, Homewrecker and tons of others on December 27th and 28th. From February 23rd through 25th, they’ll raid three Texan towns: Houston, Austin and San Antonio, alongside S.H.I.T..

On March 3rd, POWER TRIP gets underway with a three-week run through the Midwest and West Coast states, set to conclude at South By So What?! 2015 Festival in Grand Prairie, Texas, on select dates joining Build And Destroy, Title Fight and Merchandise.
