On This Day In METAL History – December 23rd… IRON MAIDEN Edition!

1981 – The great Iron Maiden performed at The Ruskin Arms in London, England. Iron Maiden were touring in support of their second studio album: Killers. Vocalist Paul Di’Anno was fronting Iron Maiden. Man, how time moves quickly by.

1995 – The iconic Iron Maiden performed at IJsselhallen in Zwolle, Netherlands, during their X Factour. Iron Maiden were touring in support of their tenth studio album: The X Factor. Vocalist Blaze Bayley was fronting Iron Maiden on this tour; he also made his debut on The X Factor studio album from 1995.

2006 – The powerful Iron Maiden performed Earls Court in London, England; one of many stops on the A Matter Of Life And Death Tour. Iron Maiden’s fourteenth studio album, A Matter Of Life And Death peaked at #9 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart in the United States.

DAVE MURRAY

On December 23rd, 1956, Dave Murray was born in England. Happy Metal birthday, Dave! Whoa, man! Dave Murray is world-famously known as a guitarist and songwriter for the amazing Iron Maiden. Dave Murray has been a life-long member of Iron Maiden, performing on all 15 Iron Maiden studio albums and all 11 live albums. Long live Dave Murray. Metal be thy name!

On December 22nd, 1946, Rick Nielsen was born in Elmhurst, Illinois. Happy Rockin’ birthday, Rick! Whoa, yeah and Metal be thy name! Rick Nielsen is world-famous as the co-founder, guitarist, songwriter and backing vocalist for the amazing Cheap Trick. It’s no secret that the legendary Rick Nielsen has been an innovator and influence during his exemplary Rock ‘N Roll career. From the late John Lennon to Dave Grohl, with Mötley Crüe in between, Rick Nielsen has collaborated with the very best.

Why Rick Nielsen and Cheap Trick are not in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame is bewildering to me. Regardless, this post is about celebrating the birthday and Rock ‘N Roll achievements of Rick Nielsen; so onward we venture! Below are several very cool facts about the Rock ‘N Roll career of Rick Nielsen and Cheap Trick. Enjoy! Whoa.

01 – Rick Nielsen and Cheap Trick bassist Tom Peterson both belonged to a band named Fuse, before Cheap Trick was formed. Fuse released an eight song album in 1970, via Epic Records. (See photo above).

02 – Cheap Trick have released 16 studio albums since 1977. Cheap Trick have also released 7 live albums and numerous compilations.

03 – Cheap Trick have been featured on 29 movie soundtracks.

04 – Cheap Trick have earned 40 Gold and Platinum recording awards.

05 – Rick Nielsen’s father, Ralph Nielsen, was a famous tenor that toured extensively and recorded 40 solo albums. Ralph Nielsen later opened a musical instrument store in Rockford, Illinois. Rick Nielsen moved to Rockford Illinois with his family, at 8 years old.

06 – Rick Nielsen is a self-taught musician who started off playing drums and later switched to guitar.

07 – Adding to Rick Nielsen’s iconic guitar playing and persona is his Hamer custom-made Five Neck guitar, as pictured above and below on the 1997 (self-titled) Cheap Trick album cover. Rick Nielsen owns 3 different Hamer Five Neck guitars.

NOCTURNA – Announce Début “Lucidity” EP

Reaching the symphonic heights of Norwich, UK, Nocturna proudly unveil their début EP Lucidity, a wondrous hybrid of prog, symphonic and power metal in the vein of Symphony X and Firewind. It was mixed by Meyrick de la Fuente of Floodgate Audio, who also provides guest vocals on the EP.

Lucidity EP is due for release on February 17th, 2015.

Having toured all over the UK and played Bloodstock’s New Blood stage last year, Nocturna are gearing up for a tour in February to support the EP’s upcoming release. They also have released a video for Revelations, which can be viewed via YouTube below.

On This Day In METAL History – December 21st… From Deep Purple To Shaun Morgan

On December 21st, 1968 – Deep Purple performed at the Fillmore East in New York City. Deep Purple were touring in support of their second studio album: The Book of Taliesyn. Whoa!

On this day in 1979 – Blackfoot hits #38 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with their hit Train, Train. This song is featured on the second studio album from Blackfoot, released in 1979: Strikes. This is a spectacular Southern Rock album, in my Metal opinion.

On December 21st, 1984 – The comedy film Johnny Dangerously was released to wide-screen theaters, via 20th Century Fox. Johnny Dangerously includes a star-studded cast of: Michael Keaton, Joe Piscopo, Marilu Henner, Maureen Stapleton, Peter Boyle, Griffin Dunne, Dom DeLuise, Danny DeVito, Alan Hale, Jr., and NFL legend Dick Butkus. This comedy film was directed by Amy Heckerling.

On this day in 1985 – Heart reached the top of the Billboard 200 Albums Chart for the first and only time, with their self-titled studio album. Heart only spent one week at number one.

On December 21st, 1990 – The mighty Iron Maiden performed at Westfalenhallen in Dortmund, Germany. Iron Maiden were touring in support of their eighth studio album: No Prayer For The Dying. This Iron Maiden album kicks 100% absolute Metal ass. Yes, it does.

On this day in 1991 – Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody topped the UK Singles Chart for the second time, entering the chart at #1. This iconic song was re-released as a single worldwide, after Queen’s legendary vocalist Freddie Mercury passing away one month earlier.

On this day in KISStory – KISS made a guest appearance on Family Guy where they appeared in a holiday special: A Very Special Family Guy Freakin’ Christmas. This was the 16th episode of the third season of Family Guy on the Fox Network.

SHAUN MORGAN

On December 21st, 1978, Shaun Morgan was born, in South Africa. Happy Rockin’ birthday, Shaun! Hell, yeah and whoa! Shaun Morgan is famously known as the co-founder, singer, songwriter and guitarist for the Alternative Rock/Metal band Seether.

POWER TRIP – Texas Crossover Act Continues Raging Tour Schedule Into New Year

Since the 2013 release of their debut LP, Manifest Decimation, on Southern Lord, Texas maniacs, POWER TRIP, have toured incessantly, bringing their hyperactive brew of modernized-but-old-school thermonuclear crossover to ragers across multiple continents. The ongoing attack will continue into 2015, as the band has just announced a new bash of US tour dates in February and March, with their performance at Florida’s FYA Fest still confirmed before the year comes to a close.

First up, closing their crushing 2014 tour schedule down, POWER TRIP will bring their mayhem to the Fern Park, Florida-based FYA Fest, joining a bruising roster of hardcore acts including Down To Nothing, Incendiary, Code Orange, Cold World, Bitter End, Mammoth Grinder, Discourse, Homewrecker and tons of others on December 27th and 28th. From February 23rd through 25th, they’ll raid three Texan towns: Houston, Austin and San Antonio, alongside S.H.I.T..

On March 3rd, POWER TRIP gets underway with a three-week run through the Midwest and West Coast states, set to conclude at South By So What?! 2015 Festival in Grand Prairie, Texas, on select dates joining Build And Destroy, Title Fight and Merchandise. But as always with these road animals, more dates will undoubtedly be announced in the coming weeks.

Tampa, Forida: The Gasparilla Music Festival presented by SYKES (“GMF”), which kicks off the highly anticipated spring break and outdoor music festival season, has revealed its first round of musical performers. With more artists to be announced shortly, the growing line-up includes Gogol Bordello, Gaslight Anthem, Trampled by Turtles, The Budos Band, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., Dumpstaphunk, Hiss Golden Messenger, Roadkill Ghost Choir, Hot 8 Brass Band, Margo & the Pricetags, and Packway Handle Band. Local favorites include The Hip Abduction, Miggs Band, Selwyn Birchwood, Thomas Wynn & the Believers, RedFeather and Mt. Zion Baptist Gospel Choir.

Now in its fourth year, the festival promises its most eclectic and impressive musical line-up to date and will be announcing other top acts and local favorites in the upcoming weeks. In addition, the festival has announced that Early Bird discounted ticket pricing will continue until the full lineup is announced in January. GMF takes place March 7-8 in Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park and Kiley Garden.

Past performers at GMF have included The Flaming Lips, Trombone Shortly, Jason Isbell, RJD2, Ra Ra Riot, Rebirth Brass Band, Deer Tick, Best Coast, Dawes, and Ozomatli among many others.

In keeping with the Festival’s theme of bringing together a massively wide range of genres – from Brazilian Gypsies to Brookly Funkmasters, country folk duos to Orlando Swamp Rock, Brass Bands to Church Choirs – GMF continues to offer something for every musical palate.

A sampling of the caliber and diversity included in this preliminary announcement includes: Selwyn Birchwood was the winner of the 2013 Blues Foundation International Blues Challenge; Roadkill Ghost Choir has garnered rave reviews from the tastemakers at SPIN, Rolling Stone and Relix; Gogol Bordello has scored several early TV appearances with Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon and Letterman; Packway Handle Band has been voted Athens’ Best Bluegrass Band three years running in the readers’ choice Flagpole Magazine Music Awards; festival favorites Trampled by Turtles have graded stages at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits Music Festival, Coachella and Stagecoach; Daptones artist The Budos Band have made fans worldwide with their infectious instrumental AfroSoul music including appearances on NPR; Hiss Golden Messenger debuted on The Late Show with David Letterman just a few weeks ago; and Nashville’s Margo & the Pricetags, whose voice and songwriting has been compared to that of Loretta Lynn’s, was featured in Rolling Stone’s “10 New Artists You Need to Know for Fall 2014”. The four performance stages are centered in the cultural playground of downtown Tampa between the Tampa Museum of Art and the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts. GMF takes place amidst the several months long legendary Gasparilla celebrations that make Tampa a top destination for revelers of all ages.

Part of the Gasparilla Music Festival’s mission is to support and promote music and education. The organization is involved throughout the year in several initiatives including their “Recycled Tunes” program which collects used musical instruments to refurbish and donate to local schools and their continued efforts to provide scholarships to local music students.

On This Day In METAL History – December 20th… And A Rockin’ Birthday Salute To Peter Criss!

On December 20th, 1981 – RUSH performed at the Hartford Civic Center, in Hartford, Connecticut. This was the Exit…Stage Left Tour, with RUSH supporting their newly released live album Exit…Stage Left. RUSH were also touring in support of their eighth studio album, released in 1981: Moving Pictures.

On this day in 1985 – Enemy Mine, the Science Fiction/Adventure film was released to wide-screen theaters. Enemy Mine stars acting legends Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr., with the film’s director being Wolfgang Petersen. I haven’t seen this movie in years and I remember really liking it. I remember HBO having Enemy Mine in its rotation, back in the day, therefore I did see it a few times. Enemy Mine is… Metal.

On December 20th, 2006 – The mighty IRON MAIDEN performed at the Point Theatre in Dublin, Ireland. This was one of many tour stops for IRON MAIDEN’s A Matter Of Life And Death Tour. The fourteenth studio album from IRON MAIDEN, A Matter Of Life And Death, was released in August of 2006.

On this day in 2013 – Hard Rockers Pop Evil performed at The Intersection in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Pop Evil were touring in support of their third studio album: Onyx. If you don’t own any Pop Evil CD’s you are maybe… constipated. Truth.

On December 20th, 2014 – Pop Evil returns to The Intersection in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to kick some live Hard Rockin’ ass. Whoa! Long live Pop Evil.

On this day in 2014 – Ian Anderson and The Best Of Jethro Tull performs at The Civic in Auckland, New Zealand. Built in 1929, The Civic is one of the few remaining Atmospheric Theatres in the world. Whoa! Jethro Tull was named after an eighteenth century English agricultural pioneer; this individual invented the seed drill. Whoa again!

PETER CRISS

On December 20th, 1945, Peter George John Criscuola aka Peter Criss was born, in Brooklyn, New York. Happy Rockin’ birthday, Peter! Whoa, man, yeah! Peter Criss is world-famously known as the co-founding member and former drummer for the iconic KISS.

As a breast cancer survivor, Peter Criss donates his time to the breast cancer cause; two charities Peter Criss has been involved in are the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and as artist ambassador for Hard Rock’s Pinktober Campaign for breast cancer awareness.

Back in 1976, the ballad Beth was released as a single. Co-written and sung by Peter Criss, Beth sailed through the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart, peaking at #7. This song marked the first Gold single for KISS. Beth is featured on the fourth studio album from KISS, released in 1976: Destroyer.

Peter Criss has a solo career on his Rockin’ resume as well; with 6 solo studio album releases of: Peter Criss (1978), Out Of Control (1980), Let Me Rock You (1982), Cat #1 (1994) and One For All (2007). On April 10th, 2014, Peter Criss along with Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley and Ace Frehley were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, together as KISS.

In October of 2012, Peter Criss released his autobiography, Makeup To Breakup. This Peter Criss autobiography broke the top ten on the New York Times Best Seller List, landing at number seven. I’ve read this book and believe me, it’s a tell-all. I highly recommend Makeup To Breakup to all KISS and Rock fans alike. Long live Peter Criss and… Metal be thy name. – Stone

Such long distance travel is not conducive to his health. So, don’t worry – the band has absolutely no internal personal problems and we enjoyed the best year ever in KROKUS history. This is simply a precaution for Fernando’s sake. We do not want to go overboard and risk anything that can have an impact on the longevity of the band to perform for years to come!

On This Day In METAL History – December 19th…

On December 19th, 1978 – Molly Hatchet and Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band performed at Riverfront Coliseum, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Whoa! Molly Hatchet were on tour supporting their debut and self-titled album. Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band were touring in support of their studio album, released in 1978: Stranger In Town.

On this day in 1980 – Neil Simon’s Seems Like Old Times was released to wide-screen theaters, via Columbia. This Romantic Comedy classic stars acting legends: Chevy Chase, Goldie Hawn and Charles Grodin. The director of this film was Jay Sandrich. I have seen this film dozens of times, if not more. I highly recommend it to those who dig good old-fashioned comedy from the late 70’s and early 80’s era. This comedy film from yesteryear is… Metal.

On December 19th, 1987 – Whitesnake hits #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with their power ballad: Is This Love. This song is featured on Whitesnake’s self-titled album from 1986.

On this day in 1994 – Aerosmith performed the final concert of their 240 date tour in support of their 11th studio album Get a Grip. This concert took place at Mama Kin’s Music Hall in Boston and was broadcasted on radio stations throughout North America.

On December 18th, 1977 – RUSH performed at the University Of Dayton Arena, in Dayton, Ohio. RUSH were touring in support of their fifth studio album: A Farewell To Kings.

On this day in 1978 – The iconic Led Zeppelin completed recording of their final studio album, In Through the Out Door, in Stockholm, Sweden. If you don’t own this Led Zeppelin album, you are constipated.

On December 18th, 1981 – RUSH performed at the Hartford Civic Center, in Hartford, Connecticut. RUSH were touring in support of their eighth studio album: Moving Pictures.

On this day in 1986 – Bon Jovi hits #4 in the United Kingdom with their single: Livin’ On A Prayer. This hit is featured on the third studio album from Bon Jovi, released in 1986: Slippery When Wet. This album has sold over 12 million units in the United States, alone. Whoa!!

On December 18th, 1987 – The comedy concert film Eddie Murphy RAW was released in the United States, to wide-screen theaters, via Paramount. Of course, it stars the great Eddie Murphy and he is incredibly, absolutely hilarious during this concert. This concert was filmed at the Felt Forum, (a venue in the famed Madison Square Garden), in New York City. KEITH RICHARDS

On December 18th, 1943, Keith Richards was born in England. Happy Rockin’ birthday, Keith! Whoa, man! Keith Richards is super world-famous as a co-founding member, songwriter and guitarist for The Rolling Stones. What more can be said, other than Keith Richards is an influential, whiz-bang legend of Rock And Roll? A timeless Rock And Roll Hall Of Famer, is Keith Richards. Long live Keith Richards!

ELLIOT EASTON

On December 18th, 1953, Elliot Easton was born, in Brooklyn, New York. Happy Rockin’ birthday, Elliot! Whoa and yeah! Elliot Easton is world-famously known as a co-founder, songwriter and guitarist for New Wave/Alternative Rock pioneers The Cars.

Elliot Easton is currently finding immense success with his new Rock supergroup: The Empty Hearts. The debut and self-titled album from The Empty Hearts was released on August 5th, 2014. The Empty Hearts have been currently touring as well. Long live Elliot Easton!

The Empty Hearts are: Elliot Easton (guitar), Clem Burke (drums), Andy Babiuk (bass) and Wally Palmar on guitar and vocals.

Metal Grasshopper: Episode 5, Starring Down’s Philip H. Anselmo And Comedian Dave Hill Now Playing At Metal Injection

The Metal Grasshopper series continues and Episode 5 offers a “Vulgar Display of Feelings” as Philip H. Anselmo agrees to undergo group counseling with delusional man-child, Dave Hill, in an effort to rescue the goat that also happens to be Anselmo’s grandmother. There’s not a dry seat in the house as Dr. Joe Randazzo aids Anselmo and Hill in an exploration of their feelings.

Episode 1: “Origins” – Anselmo reluctantly agrees to share his Heavy Metal wisdom with Hill.

Episode 2: “The Awakening” – Anselmo schools young Hill on headbanging, Heavy Metal vocals, and the most extreme of all breakfast cereals. Oh, and Dave takes a phone message for Phil from King Diamond, which is awesome.

Episode 3: “Metal Or Not Metal?” – Anselmo puts Hill to the test with a round of Heavy Metal flash cards. Later Anselmo makes Hill sit in a closet for a seriously long time while he makes an awesome salad. Also, Hill rents a goat.

Episode 4: “Unscared” – Anselmo lets Hill loose on an unsuspecting public, where he meets an actual woman. Anselmo also schools Hill on stage banter, corpse paint, and other important topics. Later Anselmo and Hill get in a huge argument from which they may never recover!

Metal Grasshopper pairs the unlikely duo of Metal master Philip H. Anselmo with comedian, dandy, and NPR darling, Dave Hill. Hill begs Anselmo to mold him into “the baddest metal motherfucker of all time.” Anselmo begrudgingly relents and the abuse and absurdity reaches epic levels. Metal Grasshopper was directed by Chris Lee with Joe Randazzo, written by Chris Lee, Dave Hill, and Phil Anselmo, edited by Phil Costello and produced by Chris Lee.

On December 17th, 1973 – Aerosmith began recording their second studio album, Get Your Wings, at Record Plant Studios in New York City. Get Your Wings was released March of 1974.

On this day in 1978 – Angel and Styx performed at Riverfront Coliseum, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Whoa! Angel were touring in support of their fourth studio album, released in 1978: White Hot. Styx were touring in support of their eighth studio album: Pieces Of Eight.

On December 17th, 1981 – The Alvin Lee Band opened for the legendary Black Sabbath at Riverfront Coliseum, in Cincinnati, Ohio. With Ronnie James Dio as their lead vocalist, Black Sabbath were touring in support of their tenth studio album: Mob Rules. Rest in peace, Ronnie James Dio.

On this day in 1982 – The Who performed their first farewell concert in Toronto, Canada, at the Maple Leaf Gardens. The concert was filmed for a HBO special and recorded for future albums and videos. The Who were also touring is support of their tenth studio album, released in 1982: It’s Hard.

On December 17th, 1982 – The fantasy motion picture, The Dark Crystal, was released to wide-screen theaters, via Universal. This animatronic film was directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz; while produced by Gary Kurtz. Rest in peace, Jim Henson.

On this day in 1987 – Robert Plant performed Led Zeppelin songs live for the first time as a solo artist. The concert was in Folkstone, United Kingdom. Robert Plant performed Misty Mountain Hop and Trampled Underfoot.

PAUL RODGERS

On December 17th, 1949, Paul Rodgers was born in England. Happy Rockin’ birthday, Paul! Yeah! Paul Rodgers is a Platinum selling singer, songwriter and self-taught multi-instrumentalist. This legendary artist has sold over 90 million records, while he has written, recorded, produced and released 30 albums since 1968. Paul Rodgers has formed and led three legendary bands to worldwide success: Free, Bad Company and The Firm.

Along with his Grammy nominated solo career, Paul Rodgers has recorded and/or performed with Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Brian May, Queen, David Gilmour, Buddy Guy, Joe Walsh, Slash, Nils Lofgren, Charlie Watts, Bryan Adams, Stax Recording artist Sam Moore, The Four Tops and many others.

Back in 1991, Paul Rodgers and legendary drummer Kenney Jones formed The Law; releasing their lone self-titled album the same year. I consider Paul Rodgers to be one of the greatest Rock and Hard Rock singers of all-time, his voice has forever been unique and magnificent; I’m certain that I’m not alone in this thinking. Long live Paul Rodgers!

MARIA BRINK

On December 17th, 1977, Maria Brink was born in New York. Happy Rockin’ birthday, Maria! Alright and yeah! Maria Brink is famously known as the lead singer, songwriter and co-founder of In This Moment. As a major draw at numerous, yearly major Metal and Rock festivals, Maria Brink has consistently changed her stage attire and presence, while giving her constant growing fan base something to look forward to and experience in the live concert setting.

The ever musically evolving and beautiful Maria Brink and her dynamic band In This Moment have gradually moved to the forefront of the Heavy Music scene, after five critically acclaimed studio albums since 2007. From Metalcore to Gothic and Hard Rock in-between, In This Moment are a diverse band that never aims for the status-quo.
