French Occult Rockers Akasava Announce Debut EP “Strange Aeons”

Posted in Metal, Music, progressive metal, rock music with tags , , on January 24, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Akasava - promo album cover pic - #2015AMO01

Akasava, new faces to the occult-psych metal scene, will release their début ritual EP Strange Aeons in the late spring of 2015. The French have a pedigree in music almost as notable as their taste in film. So when one draws from the other, you can be sure the atmosphere is electric. Make no mistake, occult rockers Akasava pick their influences well: the playful surrealism of Jean Rollin (The Shiver of the Vampires/The Nude Vampire) meets the 70s horror of Jess Franco (Vampyros Lesbos/Exorcism). Musically speaking, Akasava also draw from that hazy era of psych and prog in the 60s and 70s. Extraordinary bands ahead of their time, such as 13th Floor Elevators, Jacula and Devil Doll, clash with more modern acts like Blood Ceremony, Purson and Kadavar.

Despite adoring this occult and ancient sound, Akasava are as fresh-faced as they come: they formed in July 2014, four highly motivated souls finding much common ground, and quickly joining forces to jam out the creativity within them. Now, less than a year later, an EP is coming to light. Entitled Strange Aeons, it’s as much an homage to that era as it is pushing the sound forward in new and intriguing directions.

Akasava - publicity photo - #2015AMO01

Akasava Are:

Louis Hauguel – Vocals, Lyrics
Arnold Lucas – Guitars, Organ
Amélie Gavalda – Bass Guitar
David Touroul – Drums

Digital release is set for late Spring, while a single is scheduled for March.

THE BODY POLITIC – Post Teaser For New Video ‘All Hands’ – Plus Offer FREE Download Of EP ‘Egressor’

Posted in Metal, metal music, Music, rock music with tags , , , on January 24, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

The Body Politic - Promo Band Pic - #2015TBPMO

Nanaimo, BC six-piece powerhouse The Body Politic have posted a teaser for their upcoming music video ‘All Hands’ in support of their latest EP ‘Egressor’, which is available for FREE download here.

Drummer Spencer Bowman comments:

“When we began searching for a director for the All Hands music video, it didn’t take us long to come across Emma Higgins. Emma and her team captured the mood of the song and the energy of the band better than we could have hoped for. We had a blast on set, and we’re excited to have the video’s exclusive premiere on MuchMusic!”

To watch the teaser, please visit the following link here or below. The full video will be exclusively premiered on Much Music on February 25th.

About: The Body Politic’s EP ‘Egressor’ was released September 16th to follow-up their 2011 debut album ‘All Too Human’.  Taking their name from a Clive Barker short story and shifting gears from jazz (which most of the members studied at Vancouver Island University) to Progressive Metal, the band combine poly-metric grooves, aggressive screams and soaring vocal melodies to push the boundaries of Modern Metal music with technically impressive musicianship.

Their emotionally charged songs incorporate an element of playfulness that has led THE BODY POLITIC to stand out in a vast Metal crowd and to perform opening slots for Tesseract, Protest The Hero and Scale The Summit; plus multiple Western Canadian tours with their evolution.

 Dyatlov 4:28

 Virtue 4:30

 Nazca Lines 5:23

 Blue Car Syndrome 6:47

 EP Length: 26:08

ABOUT:

Initially never planning to release his music compositions beyond the borders of just song writing, freelance drummer/instructor Sean Lang was urged by his circle of musician friends whom heard his material to take his creativity to the next level.

The outcome is Seven Year Storm, which showcases Lang’s unique sound, music arrangements written entirely by him plus guitarist Dean Lamb (Archspire) whom handles all of the mind-bending guitar leads and solos. Everything comes together into songs that are tight and heavy, melodic and groovy, technical yet memorable.

To get these works of art off the studio floor, Lang launched an Indiegogo campaign (video can be viewed here) to raise the necessary investment to complete the first collection of songs, which will be released in 2015 as two EPs: Aion I and Aion II.

Dhampyr - Oceanclots - promo cover pic - #2015MO

About Dhampyr:

From the tender age of 16, HL has led an ever-rotating ensemble of beautifully damaged traveling companions on a seemingly endless journey into a hazy abyss where lo-fi, depressive black metal and druggy, psychedelic art rock make for strangely sensual bedmates.

Beginning life as a ramshackle but haunting project full of tortured screams and doomy ambiance, the music soon expanded outward into a buzzing, near-perfectly blissed-out blend of raw black metal and classic indie shoegaze thrum.

Now with that particular musical blend blowing up to almost mainstream levels of success for certain bands, the group has shifted directions again, this time digging even deeper into the bizarre corners of underground music, and coming up with a sound that at times could perhaps be described as a black metal take on Japanese rock weirdos Acid Mothers Temple.  Or it could just be the next logical evolutionary step in the development of one of the most surrealist bands of our time.

Either way, the combination of black metal buzz, shoegaze warmth, delicate, finger picked acoustics, jazz-flecked drums, post-rock structures, and tripped out vocals serve as the canvas on which HL paints his most heartbreaking personal work to date.  A story of friends and family lost to overdose, suicide and mental illness, of memories that haunt the mind like ghosts, and of a future black and bleak when held up to the image of a Technicolor past.

DISSIDENT CLONE “State of Dysphoria” – 4 Song EP Is A Metal Blast!

Dissident Clone - State Of Dysphoria - promo album cover pic - #2015DCMO

4 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall4

DISSIDENT CLONEState Of Dysphoria will be released on March 17th, 2015, via Tridroid Records. This is a 4 song EP that blasts its way through with the sonically mixed trio of Metal, Thrash and Punk. The duo that comprises Dissident Clone are: Patrick Morris on guitar/vocals and Chad Brunsell on drums.

I will admit without hesitation that this is one freaking fun EP to listen to! Underground, raw and retro all the way through, this EP is worth that full jar of rainy day beans you’re willing to let go of. Not only musically do Dissident Clone play the Metal, Thrash and Punk combination; Patrick Morris adjusts his vocals very capably based on which style is being played.

DCIM100GOPRO

Dissident Clone packs an enormous wallop in just these 4 songs, I am very delighted to say. There’s even some groove Metal and haunting riffage going on with their song Eye Of The Wound. Savvy musicians that have compiled a blue-chip EP are Dissident Clone. I highly recommend to all who appreciate music that kick-starts the party into a ruckus. Metal be thy name. – Stone

GHOULGOTHA “The Deathmass Cloak” – A Raging And Wicked, Blackened, Death Doom Metal Album!

Ghoulgotha - The Deathmask Cloak - promo cover pic - #2015G

4 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall4

GHOULGOTHA The Deathmass Cloak has been made available, on January 13th, via the Dark Descent website. This group was formed and is based in San Diego, California. GHOULGOTHA do strike the Death Metal hammer down, more than likely splitting speakers and skulls, across the lands, from their debut album. My Metal God almighty, is this album molasses heavy!

Overall, The Deathmass Cloak plays out as a Blackened Death Metal collides with calamitous Doom Metal listen. Heavy as King Kong’s monster-sized, congealed shit and fused with down tempo Death Metal are best to describe this album’s songs. GHOULGOTHA have won me over due their honing in on their own sound and by not following the leader within the Death Metal universe. There are hoards of riffs, that summons the same Metal Gods that have looked down upon Black Sabbath with appreciation and trust me, these guitar parts are CHUNKY.

Ghoulghota - promo band photo - Nov - 2014 - #33GDDM

I have found The Deathmass Cloak to be a rather diverse listen in Death Metal, where both Old Schoolers and newbies of the Modern era should both walk away feeling some deathly Metal fulfillment from GHOULGOTHA’s creativity. The all-encompassing Death Metal vibe on this album is just an overall treat for my senses; GHOULGOTHA has a downbeat aura to their sound that just locks me in, man.

The sonic surprises of both the album’s intro of Solar Awakening and closer, Levitate Within The Curse, are stuff of genius for a Death Metal band; very impressive musical ideas were obviously fulfilled there. I’ll leave that last thought as something you’ll have to hear for yourself, it’s too good to give away. Metal be thy name. – Stone

ACID KING – SHARE “MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, CENTER OF EVERYWHERE” COVER

Acid King - Middle Of Nowhere Center Of Everywhere - promo cover pic - #2015MO

DOOM PIONEERS’ FIRST ALBUM IN 10 YEARS OUT APRIL 14th

________________________

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 20, 2015 – Acid King have unveiled the cover art for their forthcoming album, Middle of Nowhere, Center of Everywhere (available April 14).

The artwork for Middle of Nowhere, Center of Everywhere was done by famed tattoo artist, Tim Lehi. Lehi has done cover art and posters for High on Fire, Earthless and Witch.

Middle of Nowhere, Center of Everywhere was recorded at both Sharkbite and Tiny Telephone Studios in San Francisco, mixed at Different Fur Studios and produced by Acid King and Billy Anderson. The digital release will be released independently via Acid King while physical copies, both CD and vinyl, will be available via Svart Records.

“We had several songs in the works over the years that we spent most of our time touring Europe but in between working our day jobs, we didn’t put the effort into recording,” explained singer/guitar player Lori S. “I really wanted to accelerate the process and get new music out. It’s time. This music that we’ve been playing for so long, that was initially obscure and underground, seemed to grow over these past 10 years and the timing was right to release this now!”

Acid King bubbled up from San Francisco in 1993 through a fog of revved up riffs, thunderous drums, and a hypnotic vocal howl. They unleashed three EPs and three full-length albums, starting with Zoroaster in 1995, the 1999 full-length Busse Woods, and their most recent release, Acid King III, coming in 2005. Their seismic chemistry transfixed audiences everywhere from high-profile festivals such as Hellfest and Roadburn to now iconic shows alongside peers such as Sleep and Mystick Krewe of Clearlight.

The band recently confirmed their participation in Desertfest, April 24 to 26 in the UK. North American tour dates will be announced soon.

NOCTURNA “Lucidity” – A Debut EP Of Symphonic / Prog Metal That Gleams

Nocturna - Lucidity - Promo EP Cover - #2015NCM

4.5 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

Metal fists - 4.5 - album reviews metal odyssey

Releasing on February 17th is the self-released and debut EP, Lucidity, from the UK’s Symphonic Metal Band: Nocturna. I have enjoyed this six song EP very much, to the point where I feel relieved to get this Nocturna review up on this blog for others to read about. Firstly, sonic quality is ever-present throughout this EP. Secondly, lead vocalist and guitarist James Davis reminds me of Rush legend Geddy Lee, with his harmonious, clean and pronounced vocals.

To say this band will go far is not a stretch by any means. Nocturna are a Metal treat to listen to, with their musicianship, songwriting and catchy melodies, all wrapped up into a delicious aural celebration of Symphonic Metal. With just the right touch of progressiveness in their music, Nocturna have a talent for the surprise with their songs. The epic closer on this EP, Cast Assured, showcases the diverse vocal and musical styles that Nocturna is all about.

Tom Frost on guitar is bona fide impressive, with his abundant ability to shred. I love the atmosphere that Josh Vigus gives to the songs with his synthesizer, creating an air of emotions that swirl about so very pleasingly, even while a blazing guitar solo is being executed. Ryan Palmer on bass and Phil Barber on drums are an exciting listen alone, these cats master their craft. Fans of European Power Metal should have no problem digging what Nocturna is all about either. Yes, I highly recommend Nocturna and their debut EP Lucidity; I cannot be more honest than that. Metal be thy name. – Stone

OUTRE – Stream New Song “Chant 3: The Fall” Off New Album

OUTRE - Ghost Chants - promo album cover pic - #2015OMO

After suffering a setback with the loss of their vocalist Andrzej Nowak, Black Metal group Outre have unveiled a track from their upcoming album recorded with the participation of Stawrogin (Odraza/Massemord). A twisted and ripping track drawing as much from French bands such as Deathspell Omega as Outre’s compatriots Behemoth, it will surely draw the attention of those with a finely tuned Black Metal radar.

The band comments:
“We are now finishing the production of our debut LP “Ghost Chants”. With minor delay caused by our vocalist leaving, the vocals recording session are now heading to an end. We asked Stawrogin for help, in our opinion one of the best throats in the Polish black metal underground, and so far we are more than satisfied with the effects of his work. A promo track “Chant 3. – The fall” gives a sneak peek of what you can expect on our debut long player. We gave our best to make this record as much essential and intense as possible.”

Chant 3. – The Fall
Chant 4. – Lament

Joe Larsen - Pink Velvet Krush - promo pic - #2015PVK

PINK VELVET KRUSH welcomes former Gene Loves Jezebel drummer Joe Larsen as the newest member of the band.

“We had a short list of musicians we wanted to look at with Joe being at the top of that list. Joe was the guy that stood out. He is the complete package. His professionalism, experience, style, energy and do what it takes attitude is what landed him the throne. Rehearsals are set, new material is being demoed, and we cannot wait to hit the road and let everyone see what we got. Great things are on the horizon” – PVK

Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, Joe started playing drums at the age of five. Privately tutored and professionally trained, Joe honed his skills throughout the years joining his first band DIADEM and then moved to Los Angeles, California attending UCLA and graduated with a four-year degree in music. Martin Luther King Jr. - cutout - promo pic - #2015MLKJ

Today, January 19th, 2015, is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, here in the United States Of America. This federal holiday is observed by all fifty states and is celebrated on the third Monday of each January for this champion of the Civil Rights movement. On November 2nd, 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill creating this federal holiday, in honor of the late Martin Luther King, Jr.

Styx - Paradise Theatre - promo cover pic - #1981STYX

On January 19th, 1981 – The sensational STYX released their tenth studio album: Paradise Theatre, via A&M Records. This album features such STYX classics as: The Best Of Times, Too Much Time On My Hands and Rockin’ The Paradise.

Megadeth - So far so good so what! - cover promo - #1988DM

On January 19th, 1988 – The fierce MEGADETH released their third studio album: So Far, So Good… So What! This album features the cover of Anarchy In The U.K., originally recorded and released in 1976, by the Sex Pistols.

Tremors - Kevin Bacon - promo movie poster - #1990KBMO

On January 19th, 1990 – The monster movie, TREMORS, was released to wide-screen theaters, via Universal Pictures. This movie marks the first of its franchise and features the stupendous Kevin Bacon, with co-stars: Fred Ward, Finn Carter and Michael Gross. TREMORS did very well at the box office, earning nearly 50 million U.S. bucks! Whoa!

TREMORS was written by S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock, while the director was Ron Underwood. The plot is basically: stay away from 30 foot burrowing worms, cause they are always hungry for unsuspecting humans. These worm monsters are referred to as graboids in this film. Yup.

I’ve seen TREMORS a few times in my day and admittedly, I dig it. TREMORS is Metal. I tend to like this genre of movies, thus, for a hunky dory time, I do recommend TREMORS as a rental; along with an order of wings, 1 container of Pringles, 1 bowl of buttered popcorn and the beverages of your choice.

Cloverfield - promo movie poster pic - #2008C

On this day in 2008 – The Science Fiction thriller, Cloverfield, was released to wide-screen theaters, via Paramount. Honestly, this movie is scary as all hell. Seriously. The abbreviated plot is: Extraterrestrial’s are hell-bent on destroying our world as we know it, starting with New York City. The alien that is shown in this film is one terrifying motherfu**er too!

Cloverfield was directed by Matt Reeves and written by Drew Goddard. The actors in this movie are not big-time stars; nonetheless, the acting is very believable and makes this movie that much more realistic to me.

Cloverfield is filmed as a point-of-view and never ceases to make me feel very uneasy about what is possibly watching us from Outer Space. The ending is a shocker, I’ll tell you that. Cloverfield is a MUST movie to see and is without a doubt… Metal.
