FLAGMAN’s Before The Blast Is Out Now

Posted in alternative metal, avant-garde metal, Metal, metal music, Music, music news, news with tags , , , , , , on October 18, 2025 by Metal Odyssey

Alternative/avant-garde metal unit FLAGMAN has unleashed its newest EP, Before the Blast.

Based in Seattle and riddled with ADHD, FLAGMAN has carved out its own niche in the metal community with a sound best described as “the lovechild of Primus, Mike Patton, and System of a Down.”

Before the Blast is now streaming on BandcampSpotify and Apple Music.

Watch the official music video for the song “The Punishment Committee” at youtu.be/yn8LwucYoXA?si=pGCSmxwjyAxty9Tz.

Despite various lineup changes, touring challenges, and the many other hurdles that accompany bands in the modern age, FLAGMAN has spent the last 10 years living the ‘never say die’ mantra. The band has built a reputation based on a boundary-pushing approach to songwriting and explosive live performances, sharing the stage with acts such as Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Battles, Man On Man, Melvinator, Hed PE, and more.

With Before the Blast, the band leans heavily into the avant-garde tendencies, weaving angular riffs, manic rhythms, and industrial flair into an experience that is both urgent and unhinged.

Catch FLAGMAN live:
10/30 – Sacramento, CA @ The Starlet Room
11/1 – Palmdale, CA @ Transplants Brewing
11/2 – San Francisco, CA @ Bottom Of The Hill
11/4 – Redding, CA @ The Dip
11/5 – Eugene, OR @ John Henry’s
11/6 – Portland, OR @ Twilight Bar & Cafe

Alternative metal’s breakout act ONI has released the second chapter of its latest opus, Genesis, today. Vocalist and musical mastermind Jake Oni has revealed the new EP, Genesis Pt. II, an anthemic, active rock/metal masterpiece that perfectly bookends his latest vision. Produced by writing partner and Spiritbox bassist Joshua Gilbert, the record solidifies ONI’snew direction, spearheaded by standout singles like “Float” and “What I’ve Become.”

Speaking about the new EP, Jake Oni says:

I am really proud of the Genesis EP, and writing it was very cathartic. As I released the songs and the fan feedback got stronger and stronger, I felt like I hadn’t finished saying everything with the first e.p and still had all these amazing songs that truly felt like a continuation of my Genesis story. I hope the fans, find the message in these songs, and it helps them as much as it helped me.

With today’s release, ONI has debuted a new video for the track “What I’ve Become.”

Oni adds about the new track and video:

‘“What I’ve Become’ is such a huge song! It was a song that just flowed when me and Josh started writing it. The song is about not loving a version of yourself! We shot the music video on tour in Charlotte NC, was a crazy day as we flew in, shot the music video and then played a show 3 hrs later. I know this will be a fan favorite as it’s been loved by everyone I have shown it too.

Genesis Pt. I and Genesis Pt. II are now available as one album, Genesis, exclusively on CD. A limited edition Genesis merch collection will be available as well.

https://themelvins.lnk.to/Thunderball

February 18, 2025, LOS ANGELES – Melvins 1983, the raw and unfiltered incarnation of the legendary band featuring Buzz Osborne and original Melvins drummer, Mike Dillard, return with Thunderball – their first full-length album in four years, out April 18 via Ipecac Recordings.

“Thunderball is the third Melvins 1983 record we’ve made together, and I wanted it to be bombastic – I think we achieved that,” says Osborne. “I also wanted to do something with electronic artists Void Manes and Ni Maîtres for a long time. Both of them are exceptional talents. Their out-of-the-box use of electronics pushed Thunderball beyond my expectations.”

A preview of the five-song, 34-minute album is out now, with today’s release of “Victory of the Pyramids.” Driven by Dillard’s unrelenting cadence, the song opens with an almost deceptively poppy feel before spiraling into the crushing, sludgy depths that have long defined the Melvins’ sound. As Dillard said, it’s “a lovely blend of beautiful noise and gut-busting grooves.” The album was recorded by Toshi Kasai at Sound of Sirens Studios.

Album pre-orders are available now (https://themelvins.lnk.to/Thunderball), with Thunderball available on trio of vinyl variants including an indie exclusive “Smoke Is A Color” variant and an Ipecac webstore-only “Special Mustard Gas.” The collection is also available on CD and all digital formats.

The Napalm Death/Melvins outing is the follow-up to the legendary bands’ 2016 joint outing, dubbed the “Savage Imperial Death March” tour. Both “The Spring Break Tour” and the co-headlining shows with Napalm Death will feature Osborne, Dale Crover, Steven McDonald and Coady Willis. Tickets are available now via Ipecac.com/tours.

Beasto Blanco “LOWLANDS” Single and Video Review – by Tanis Enos

Posted in alternative metal, alternative metal bands, alternative metal music, gothic metal, Metal, metal bands, metal music, Music, music news, music videos with tags , , , , , , on May 3, 2024 by Metal Odyssey

Beasto Blanco has produced yet another mind blowing single following the release of “Run for Your Life” in February. Fans were treated to a listening party with members of the band on Bandcamp prior to the official release, and the the new single was immediately met with an outpour of love and excitement for the video.

“LOWLANDS” features Calico Cooper at the forefront of vocals this time, with Chuck Garric’s low raspy voice complimenting her perfectly throughout the song. The chorus alone shows not only the power behind Cooper’s voice as she belts out “Home” but gives you a beautiful introduction to her range. A mix between clean and distorted vocals adds to the anger behind the song.

“LOWLANDS” is the auditory representation of the Machine Girl. The song includes strong guitar parts with a war like drum beat keeping time and the Beasto Blanco groove that makes you feel like you are indestructible. While chatting with fans in the Bandcamp party, Cooper stated “I wrote the lyrics when I was a liiiiiittle mad lol” Everyone can always use a song to angrily scream in their car on the way to work.

Cooper also got to show off her high level of creativity and rage in a visual way as she not only starred in but directed the music video. The video is basically split in two, Cooper singing in the rain with dark blue lighting and the story being told within tints of red, yellow and orange. Cooper mentioned to fans on Bandcamp that “I nearly drowned,” and whether she’s serious or joking the amount of rain and splashing added just what was needed to the fury and passion behind the song and made Cooper look terrifyingly beautiful as she sang it. It all seemed to flow very naturally from her. As for the story scenes, there is no better vampire to use than Anthony Montemarano, because what woman wouldn’t get drawn in by that smirk?

The role Montemarano plays is so key to visually depicting not letting love basically blind you from the bad. The very end of the video as Cooper is walking slowly toward the camera with her finger to her lips, ties the whole vibe of I made you and I can take you down cause you don’t control me.

Overall, Beasto Blanco knocked this one out of the park yet again. The band is set to tour Europe with The Dead Daisies in November of this year. The band will also be playing a few of their dates in Europe in late July, early August that include Wacken Open Air 2024 on August 3rd. Keep an eye on Beasto Blanco social media accounts for tour updates, behind the scenes of the music videos, and personal commentary from the members. – Tanis Enos

STITCHED UP HEART – Releases Hard-Hitting New Single “To The Wolves”

Posted in alternative metal, alternative rock, Hard Rock, hard rock bands, metal bands, metal music, Music, music news, news with tags , , , , , , , , on May 17, 2023 by Metal Odyssey

Los Angeles hard-rockers STITCHED UP HEART have returned with an unapologetic new single, “To The Wolves.” A harbinger of things to come and one of the band’s heaviest songs to date, the anthemic new track serves as an inspiration to stand up and fight back, as vocalist Mixi Demner reminds you: “You’re f*cking with a wolf!”

“Incredibly excited to finally unleash our first single ‘To The Wolves,’” Mixi elaborates. “We didn’t play it safe on this one. We were more ourselves than ever and had a very clear vision of what we wanted to create.”

Featuring Craig Mabbitt and produced by Kevin Thrasher from ESCAPE THE FATE, the invigorating new track is accompanied by a first-bitten video, which can be viewed HERE. Showing the band, as well as Craig, surrounded by a frozen forest, the biting cold of the scenery furthers the biting message of the track.

“To The Wolves” is also available across all streaming platforms HERE.

They released their album titled “Never Alone,” which debuted in the Top 10 of both the Billboard Heatseeker and Hard Rock charts. With their single “Finally Free” organically gaining hyper rotation on active rock radio the band paved the way to success for the next two singles “Monster” and “Catch Me When I Fall”.

With a growing fan base and relentless determination, STITCHED UP HEART has toured extensively, touring with renowned acts like GODSMACK, HALESTORM, and IN THIS MOMENT. Their live performances are known for their high energy, infectious hooks, and Mixi’s captivating stage presence, leaving audiences mesmerized and craving more.

In 2020, STITCHED UP HEART released their highly anticipated sophomore album, “Darkness.” Produced by Matt Good. The album delves further into the band’s introspective songwriting and showcases their growth as musicians. Tracks like “Lost” featuring Sully Erna of GODSMACK and “My Demon” highlight the band’s ability to blend heavy guitar riffs with anthemic choruses, making a lasting impact on the rock genre.

STITCHED UP HEART continues to push boundaries and evolve their sound, refusing to be confined to a single label or genre. Danish Alternative Metal Quintet NORÐ Is Set To Release Their Debut Album – First Single And Video “Fear Reigns” Out Now!

Danish alternative metal quintet NORÐ is set to release their debut album Machine Blood on March 4th 2022 via Inverse Records. The album is mixed and mastered by the magnificent Jacob Hansen at Hansen Studios, Denmark (Volbeat, Amaranthe, Primal Fear, etc). The first single Fear Reigns is released today along with music video.

Watch Fear Reigns music video: https://youtu.be/3CJY2fnABfs

Single cover: Hollowed Graphix

Fear Reigns (single 2022) Composer: NORÐ lyrics: Niels Thybæk-Hansen

The band comments:“Fear Reigns is a track that means a lot to us. First of all it’s a killer riff and the verse has harmonic vibrations that would remind you of the Twin Peakstheme. The chorus begins with another bad ass groovy riff followed by a more atmospheric part that will speak to anyone who ever liked Deftones. The bridge is an epic melodic part with tight riffin’ and melancholic soundscapes.

The song has been with us for a long time and it still feels fucking awesome to play every time. The crowd also always has a good response to this track.

The lyrics talk about the cracks in the foundation of societies around the world. The ideal of a democracy based on trust is increasingly threatened by more simple means to power such as fear and repression. As the globalization have brought us closer together it has also drawn new battle lines between ideologies. Societies based on ancient traditions and belief collide with capitalistic societies based on the free will of the individual. Cohesiveness is threatened and protectionism becomes stronger.

So some really uplifting themes in that song 🙂 But seriously, we love this song and hope everyone will enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoy playing it.”

Line-up:
Vocals: Bjarne Matthiesen
Guitar: Niels Thybæk-Hansen
Guitar: Thomas Bøgh Jensen
Bass: Peter Littau
Drums: Rune Kolsbjerg Hansen

THE MELVINS STREAM “TRES CABRONES” VIA PITCHFORK ADVANCE

The Melvins - Tres Cabrones - promo cover pic - 2013

NEW YEAR’S EVE SHOW WITH MUDHONEY AT GREAT AMERICAN MUSIC HALL IN SAN FRANCISCO

______________________________________________

Oct. 30, 2013 – The Melvins are streaming Tres Cabrones (Nov. 5, Ipecac) in its entirety via Pitchfork (http://pitchfork.com/advance/271-tres-cabrones/).  Pre-orders for the record are available now: http://georiot.co/44Wg.

Tres Cabrones is as close as we’re willing to get to the Melvins 1983 line-up,” explained Osborne, of the 12-song album that reunites him, Dale Crover and original drummer Mike Dillard. “The best part is it’s all new songs. I specifically wrote tunes that would be good for these guys to play and it worked out great. We had no interest in rehashing tunes we wrote 30 years ago and chose instead to simply create NEW songs. It worked out perfectly.”

“Making the Tres Cabrones record was a real treat indeed. It’s a trip down memory lane complete with debauchery and ultra violence, ” said Dillard, who left the band in 1984 only to be replaced by Crover.

“After 30 years we release a record with the (almost) original line-up of the band,” added Crover. “I’ve always felt that drummer Mike Dillard was one of us. It’s great that he’s still a piece of the puzzle!  Plus, I get to see what it’s like being the bass player in the Melvins! Tres Cabrones indeed!”

The Melvins annexed Big Business band members Coady Willis and Jared Warren in 2006 for (A) Senile Animal and the quartet has remained in this incarnation for four additional releases including Everybody Loves Sausages, a covers album released this spring. Not ones to relax, the Melvins introduced Melvins Lite, a version of the band that teams Osborne and Crover with Trevor Dunn (Tomahawk, Mr. Bungle). Melvins Lite released their debut album, Freak Puke, in 2012 and subsequently embarked on a 51 date/51 State (including DC) tour of the United States. The band most recently celebrated their 30th anniversary with a six-week North American tour.

Up next for the band is a short stint in Australia with Helmet, a performance at the Meredith Music Festival on Dec. 13 and a recently announced New Year’s Eve performance with Mudhoney at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, Calif.

KILLING JOKE – To Release MMXII Via Spinefarm Later This Month

Posted in alternative metal, Heavy Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , on October 3, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

October 30, 2012 sees the release of KILLING JOKE’s new album, MMXII, on Spinefarm Records.

2012 is the perfect year for KILLING JOKE to be releasing an album that is as dense and dark as the surrounding swirls of madness in the world. At a time when the news is on fast-forward and the planet seems to be descending into lunacy, who better than KILLING JOKE to reflect such a sentiment?

When their original lineup of Jaz Coleman, Geordie, Youth and Big Paul reconvened in 2008 after working together intermittently, that strange voodoo once again filled the room. Individually, they have a power, but together they have something sulphurous and strong that few bands can match. KILLING JOKE are not an average band with an average agenda; they lock the door and let the ritual commence, and MMXII is the result.

MMXII’s 11 tracks are an avalanche of sound — empowering whilst jolting you awake. They are as fascinating as chatting with Coleman, as he talks of future humans living forever but with no emotions, and of the Age Of Aquarius and the cycles of time, the shift in the earth’s electro-magnetic field, the end of extreme capitalism, the Arab Spring and how his trips to Cairo to record music have added to his belief that when Cairo falls everywhere else follows… MMXII is possibly KILLING JOKE’s best album ever; a dense and multi-layered work. The songs are great washes of sound – a death disco with huge slabs of guitar that soundtracks these dangerous times. It’s an end-of-time album that somehow finds moments of optimism in the downward swirl of the planet. Finding hope in the apocalypse, this album just could be their masterpiece.

The album’s key is the end of times, an age of flux, a shift in consciousness. Coleman comments: “I can’t see the point contemplating extreme life extinction — it’s good for nothing. It’s nihilism in the absolute even considering it.”

This kind of thinking sets the tone for this powerful record, with 2012 and the state of flux the key issue.“It’s in many different calendars – the great unveiling, the sky and the earth coming together. It’s a significant date. Everything is speeding up. It’s not just our minds shrinking. We are heading towards the Eschaton and no-one really knows what’s going to happen.”

The album reflects this dark vision, but Coleman sees the great change in a more positive light — the dawning of the Age Of Aquarius. “All the remote viewers I know, myself included, cannot penetrate beyond. This year is about getting our collective dreams in order, restoring the biosphere, the idea of well-being as opposed to economic growth, the idea of partnership and co-creation with fellow human beings, moving away from national boundaries and more towards what Schiller and Beethoven were saying in some of their work.”

The album’s themes are political, anti-capitalist and forward-looking. “If we can concentrate on what it can be, the dream of clean streams, of re-forestation, of permaculture, of disengaging all the banks — identifying all the majority shareholders of the top 100 corporations and dismantling them. If we start dreaming of a fairer system and defining what an elite should be — an intellectual powerhouse and not international bankers.”
