4 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall4

Press release info and Metal Odyssey review to follow below:

Having made music across a mind-bending large number of genres, from Hard Rock through Acid-Folk to Baroque Pop, multi-instrumentalist Will Z. has now turned his attention to the world of Occult Rock. Gaining inspiration from the strange and psychedelic world of Syd Barrett and the doomy leanings of early Black Sabbath, he was addicted to as a teenager, he created Dark Tales Of Will Z., exploring new territory in the musician’s repertoire.

This album is a collection of dark electric numbers, originally intended for the final part of his previous album, 12 Visions, and songs composed from 1997 to 1999, when Will Z. was a teenager.

Metal Odyssey Review:

This new album from Will Z. was released back on September 15th of 2014, via HeadSpin Records and I’ll readily admit it’s a very cool musical surprise I never expected to have drop upon my brain. Many of the best music artists out there today are either underground or completely unknown; Will Z. should rightfully be known.

I find Dark Tales Of Will Z. to remind me of all those wonderful Saturday mornings of watching Creature Feature when I was a kid, during the late 70’s. This album is something else, cause while I listen to it I envision myself going back in time in a very enjoyable way. This Will Z. album is retro in its vibes, style and sound, with Occult Rock as its genre, therefore I get to understand what Iron Butterfly might have sounded like if they recorded today. There’s also a touch of very early Uriah Heep that jumps out at me from some of the songs on this album; then again, that might just be me.

Spacey and psychedelic swirls of sound, with an unending journey of dreamlike atmospheres, coupled with Doom riffs, chilling chants and darkened sonic passages are awaiting you, courtesy of Will Z. and I’ve been won over! I never knew this guy existed beforehand and now I’m a fan! There truly is a lot going on musically on this album and it will be one for me to listen to dozens of times in order to take it all in; and that’s a good thing. In my Metal opinion, this album can very well be the soundtrack to a Space Western movie or even a Rob Zombie directed psychotic thriller.

I commend Will Z. on this musical package of ingenious Rock. His multi-instrumental abilities show no limitations and his vocals are (at times) stuff of Chris Goss from Masters Of Reality fame. I highly recommend Dark Tales Of Will Z. to all those who yearn for something different, an album that is still dark and creepy musically and takes you on a surreal path to music’s land of delight. Metal be thy name. – Stone

DRUNK DAD “Ripper Killer” Album Is: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

Drunk Dad - Ripper Killer - promo cover pic - 2014

DRUNK DAD Ripper Killer – releases July 1st, 2014, via Eolian Empire.

DRUNK DAD – When I first heard Drunk Dad’s Morbid Reality EP, I was very happy. Why you query? Answer: Drunk Dad plays Noise Rock and experiments with their sound like it’s the night before doomsday, while giving little or no regard about what others will say about the end result. Drunk Dad has their own terminology for their sound and they call it: Fuck You All Wave.

Make no mistake, Drunk Dad can and will shock you into embracing their music. Maybe. It’s weird how it happened to me. The mixture of several genres of non-mainstream, apocalyptic underground goodness is what Drunk Dad creates and they do it superbly, in my Metal opinion. I sometimes wonder to myself, would Noise be the genre that I would pursue If I wanted to start a band? Just listening to Drunk Dad seems to calm my nerves. After listening to Ripper Killer, I feel as though I took a hammer to an aluminum garbage can and now everything is cool.

Drunk Dad

Ripper Killer is Drunk Dad’s first long play and I see it being the launching pad of this Portland, Oregon ensemble. Drunk Dad needs to play Ripper Killer in its entirety at this year’s Super Bowl halftime show, just to shut the mouths of and piss off all those plastic millionaire/billionaire dorks that get all the free corporate seats. I’m serious. The overall sound that is Ripper Killer just has to appeal to a cross-section of Punk, Sludge, Hardcore and Experimental fans. If you dig Mr. Bungle and/or the Melvins, you are in for a sonic treat with Drunk Dad. Yup.

As a past student of Art History, I’ve been trained to look beyond the first impression and explore the many inner cavities of the visual creation. With that said, the cover art (or photo if you will) of Drunk Dad’s Ripper Killer, (see atop post), exposes light years of relevance to what is happening in our world today. Albeit shocking to look at, the cover art does symbolize the death that is in our hourly news; whether it’s carnage from a madman firing off a gun in public, wars, cruelty to any life form or even an oil spill from an ocean tanker.

Relating the cover art of Ripper Killer to Drunk Dad’s music just seems to fit; for if the photo turns off the fancy and out-of-touch mainstream, then surely the music heard within will too. Sometimes one picture is truly worth a thousand words. That’s my interpretation, anyways. Metal be thy name. – Stone

THE MELVINS STREAM “TRES CABRONES” VIA PITCHFORK ADVANCE

NEW YEAR’S EVE SHOW WITH MUDHONEY AT GREAT AMERICAN MUSIC HALL IN SAN FRANCISCO

______________________________________________

Oct. 30, 2013 – The Melvins are streaming Tres Cabrones (Nov. 5, Ipecac) in its entirety via Pitchfork (http://pitchfork.com/advance/271-tres-cabrones/).  Pre-orders for the record are available now: http://georiot.co/44Wg.

Tres Cabrones is as close as we’re willing to get to the Melvins 1983 line-up,” explained Osborne, of the 12-song album that reunites him, Dale Crover and original drummer Mike Dillard. “The best part is it’s all new songs. I specifically wrote tunes that would be good for these guys to play and it worked out great. We had no interest in rehashing tunes we wrote 30 years ago and chose instead to simply create NEW songs. It worked out perfectly.”

“Making the Tres Cabrones record was a real treat indeed. It’s a trip down memory lane complete with debauchery and ultra violence, ” said Dillard, who left the band in 1984 only to be replaced by Crover.

“After 30 years we release a record with the (almost) original line-up of the band,” added Crover. “I’ve always felt that drummer Mike Dillard was one of us. It’s great that he’s still a piece of the puzzle!  Plus, I get to see what it’s like being the bass player in the Melvins! Tres Cabrones indeed!”

The Melvins annexed Big Business band members Coady Willis and Jared Warren in 2006 for (A) Senile Animal and the quartet has remained in this incarnation for four additional releases including Everybody Loves Sausages, a covers album released this spring. Not ones to relax, the Melvins introduced Melvins Lite, a version of the band that teams Osborne and Crover with Trevor Dunn (Tomahawk, Mr. Bungle). Melvins Lite released their debut album, Freak Puke, in 2012 and subsequently embarked on a 51 date/51 State (including DC) tour of the United States. The band most recently celebrated their 30th anniversary with a six-week North American tour.

Up next for the band is a short stint in Australia with Helmet, a performance at the Meredith Music Festival on Dec. 13 and a recently announced New Year’s Eve performance with Mudhoney at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, Calif.

Darsombra - band promo pic - #33 - 2013

Baltimore-based audio/visual duo DARSOMBRA will proudly play a free show in their hometown this Saturday , August 24th, in full gratitude to their local scene for helping them recover a huge arsenal of stolen equipment!

Following a recent break-in burglary of the DARSOMBRA abode, with thieves getting away with seemingly irreplaceable guitars, computers, amps, visual equipment and more, the word made it to the proper parties in time and citizens/musicians/friends of the band helped track down and recover nearly all of the lost gear! In their recent band newsletter the members simply stated: “Watch out, world!!! This show is FREE because WE LOVE YOU and wanna say THANK YOU for all the love we received after our home was burglarized. So come on out and let us say it in person:” If you’re in the area, please come celebrate the duo celebrate and give thanks. The duo will perform at Windup Space and will be joined by friends Yeveto, Height, The Immortal Jellyfish and Carly Ptak “and the band documentary for The Human Host Movie.

DARSOMBRA Baltimore Gratitude Free Show:

8/24/2013 Windup Space – Baltimore, MD

DARSOMBRA is planning to tour the entire country on their most intense stateside tour ever in the Spring of 2014; fans are encouraged to contact the band if you want them to come to your town on this widespread trek. Stay tuned for more band updates over the coming months.

Following releases on At A Loss, Public Guilt, Underradar and others, DARSOMBRA signed with Exile On Mainstream for the release of Climax CommunityThe three tracks on the LP traversing forty-five minutes of the outfit’s unique, slow-building, organic transcendental rock. Brian Daniloski, a veteran of heavier, sludgier, grittier rock bands such as Meatjack and Trephine, controls the sound of DARSOMBRA, alternating between mammoth vocal swells and soundscapes and searing guitar riffs, leads, loops, and samples, combining elements of metal, psychedelic rock, experimental/drone, prog and krautrock. But there is more than just Daniloski’s sonic world at play here as video artist Ann Everton takes his work to the next level by bringing her DARSOMBRA-induced visions to the stage through her kinetic psychotropic video projections, creating a constantly shifting backdrop to Daniloski’s live performances.

Critical Praise:

“The larger movements of the songs rub against each other with tectonic weight, while subtler elements attack, defeat and consume. Strange and lovely, Climax Community speaks in the language of animal instinct.” – Exclaim!

“Much like a work of fine art, little to no commentary is given leaving the observer to interpret the work as they wish. By the same token, the listener may also choose to switch off the cerebral and absorb the music at the most basic level.” – Ghost Cult

“It’s a clever, dense and hypnotic release that demonstrates that there’s still plenty of exploration to be done in experimental and psychedelic music.” – OneMetal

Stone Says: This story is absolutely stunning, in a very sad way. This is one terrible act of unkindness, a downright act of human indecency towards our fellow-man. I truly hope DARSOMBRA locates any or all of their precious musical/visual equipment. I urge DARSOMBRA to start a Kickstarter campaign to recoup their means for their livelihood as well.

DRUNK DAD – Noise/Sludge Quartet’s EP Is The Eolian Empire’s Next Conquest

Posted in experimental rock, grindcore, Music, noise rock, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on April 30, 2013 by Metal Odyssey

Eolian Empire Compilation - promo cover - 2013

In a constant barrage of new noise from Portland-based D.I.Y. noisemongers Eolian Empire, the label’s next conquest comes by way of the filthifying new 12” from local metalworkers DRUNK DAD.

If they weren’t such dirty fuckers they’d be one of the town’s shining success stories of unrelenting hard work and dedication: in a surprisingly short time DRUNK DAD went from favorite-band-shirts-on-their-hearts-on-their-sleeves to a unique and dynamic fusion of the heavy, the noisy, and the aggro, with a healthy dose of high drama, as they consistently churn out some of the most devastating live sets Portland has seen in years. Complex but in-your-face arrangements, push-pull duel-guitar interplay, searing behind-the-head leads, heavy motherfucking bass, and hard-hitting, tight, technical traps with dynamic, disturbing vocals to hold it all together evolves to ethical scumbaggery at its finest.

Morbid Reality, the first vinyl release from Portlandian shitstarters DRUNK DAD, merges off-kilter sludge/noise the Pacific Northwest perpetuates so well into a drugged-out but aggro vibe; elements of scathing crust-ish degenerate punk brutality of El Dopa or Dystopia are cold-filtered with slow-motion acerbic sludge basslines and noxious riffage with a post-Melvins experimental vibe.

Eolian Empire will drop the four-song Morbid Reality via 12” vinyl and digital download on June 11th. In the meantime, DRUNK DAD were recently caught intoxicating the public via Eolian’s massive KEEP OUR HEADS Portland underground compilation alongside twenty-five more of the city’s finest filthriffing acts. Get wrecked with their pungent “S.O.U.” anthem from the comp RIGHT HERE.

Following their spot on one of the Eolian Empire KEEP OUR HEADS record release shows over the weekend, DRUNK DAD have the coolers loaded with frothy ammo as they plan on stumbling south across California this week, with shows booked in Eureka, Oakland and a happy-hour double in San Francisco. They also just booked a hometown record release show at Portland’s Ash Street Saloon with labelmates Diesto on June 7th, with much more public drunkenness to be had in the Summer months.

NEUROSIS – Title Of Eleventh Full-Length From Musical Pioneers Revealed

Posted in experimental music, experimental rock, Heavy Metal, metal music, Music, progressive metal, progressive rock, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on August 13, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

It is said that great art has the power to take us outside of ourselves and bring us closer to ourselves simultaneously. Few bands have accomplished this rare feat on a more profound and consistent basis than NEUROSIS. For nearly three decades, their music has touched the hearts and minds of young men and women seeking contact with something beyond the physical world, something intangible, something that expresses the inner tumult of the human condition in a way that transcends time and space. Something that not only provokes questions but maybe even hints at answers.

Since 1985 this matchless force has surpassed the boundaries of any genre, never-ceasing to mutate and progress their songwriting and sonic delivery, and never-failing to mesmerize audiences both in the studio and onstage. And as the anticipation from their diehard fanbase reaches a boiling point, this week NEUROSIS unveil the title of their eleventh full-length studio creation, which will manifest itself as Honor Found In Decay.

The follow-up to their acclaimed 2007-released Given To The Rising album, the music on Honor Found In Decay is both torturous and transcendent. It is the ongoing exposition of a vast internal dialogue that seems to carry the weight of eons. With the right kind of ears and eyes, it can seem like the trials and tribulations of mankind are being channeled through five individuals: Steve Von Till, Scott Kelly, Noah Landis, Jason Roeder and Dave Edwardson. And yet? They will be the first ones to tell you that they are just regular people trying to make sense of the world around them.

Aided by Josh Graham, their resident visual guru, they transmit their interpretations through multiple sensory planes. The degree to which Neurosis allows them to step out of their everyday lives is the distance between one and zero, the distance between thinking and doing, the distance between this minute and the one that may or may not follow. Which is to say: NEUROSIS takes them outside of themselves and brings them closer to themselves. Simultaneously.

This next chapter in the evolution of NEUROSIS will see worldwide release through the band’s own Neurot Recordings this Autumn, in Germany October 26th, in the UK October 29th, and in North America on October 30th.

Further details on Honor Found In Decay will be made available over the coming weeks.

Swimming In Fire – Featuring: Greg Hampton, Danny Saber, Eric Dover & Chris Collier

Posted in alternative metal, alternative rock, experimental music, experimental rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on August 5, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

SWIMMING IN FIRE – The dynamically Rockin’ duo of Greg Hampton (Alice Cooper, 9 Chambers, Lita Ford, The New Czars) and Danny Saber (U2, Ozzy Osbourne, Korn, Marilyn Manson) have founded and are currently collaborating/producing a new project they’ve called: Swimming In Fire.

With Eric Dover (Slash’s Snakepit, Alice Cooper) and Chris Collier joining on, Swimming In Fire is a potent supergroup of seasoned songwriters and multi-instrumentalists to keep your ears and eyes on today and tomorrow!

Two words to know: Alternative. Experimental. Yes, Swimming In Fire are playing cutting-edge music and it’s still radiating some hard and heavy persona that Heavy Metal and Hard Rock diehards scream for. Expect the electronic gates of sound to open up and introduce you to what Greg Hampton and Danny Saber have created here with their project.

Incorporating driving guitars and melodic vocals into their songs is only just the beginning, with this creative band. There’s plenty of Alternative and Experimental nuances happening musically; this all makes the music from Swimming In Fire a true Rock ‘N Roll delicacy in the making.

I’m looking forward to hearing the eventual debut album from Swimming In Fire, these guys are onto capturing a sound that is both highly relevant and contagious. Metal be thy name.

Take a listen to three songs that are already streaming on Swimming In Fire’s facebook and Reverbnation sites, by clicking on the links below!

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 27, 2012 – The Melvins unveil the latest twist in their 29-year history with Melvins Lite, an additional incarnation of the band that finds founders Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover partnering with Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk) for a 10-song released titled Freak Puke (June 5, Ipecac Recordings).

“The Melvins have a long history of mixing up our line-ups and I think that’s what has kept us relevant for so long,” explains Osborne. “Consider the Freak Puke record the fifth side of the four-sided Melvins’ triangle.”

Dunn is known as one of Rock and Jazz’s top bass players, performing on both a traditional and upright bass in a wide range of bands and as a freelance musician.  He is currently recording the new Tomahawk album, is a member of Fantômas and was the bassist for Mr. Bungle.

The Melvins will be taping an episode of Last Call with Carson Daly at their Apr. 13 show in Los Angeles. Osborne will join Greg Gutfeld for another chat on June 28 on Fox News’ Red Eye.

Freak Puke was recorded by Toshi Kasai and the Melvins in Los Angeles.

KORN The Path Of Totality – New Experimental Studio Album Releases on December 6th, 2011

Posted in experimental rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, nu metal, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on October 12, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

As reported on the official website of KORN, September 28th, 2011:

Korn announced today that they will release their tenth studio album, The Path of Totality on December 6. But this is unlike any Korn record. It’s even unlike any record released before.

The Path of Totality is an experimental album which finds Korn shifting gears and exploring new territory. That should hardly come as a shock to the band’s diehard fans, as Korn exploded onto the scene in the’90s and established themselves as hard rock game changers from that point on.

For The Path of Totality, the band collaborated with some of the leading dubstep and electronic producers in the world, including Skrillex, Excision, Datsik, Noisia, Kill the Noise, and 12th Planet. The result is something completely new, yet utterly and definitively Korn. Leave it to a band like Korn to continue to reinvent itself two decades deep into its career.

“The title The Path of Totality refers to the fact that in order to see the sun in a full solar eclipse, you must be in the exact right place in the exact right time,” Korn frontman Jonathan Davis explained. “That’s how this album came together. I think all the producers feel the same way. I’m not sure it could ever happen again.”

The band’s recent (and much lauded) collaboration with dubstep’s hottest producer, Skrillex, titled “Get Up!,” was the surprise rock hit of the summer, the buzz of which started in Coachella’s dance tent in April 2011, when Jonathan and Munky joined Skrillex on stage for a show stealing unannounced performance of the song.

That performance generated the start of a deafening buzz. The track has sold over 150,000 downloads, while the lyric video has generated nearly two million views and counting. The song was a top 10 rock radio hit.

For more on this article, click here: KORN – Official Website

The first leg of KORN’s “Path of Totality (P.O.T.)” tour will play key ballrooms and feature dubstep DJ’s Datsik and Downlink, as well as young upstart Dutch Dub-rockers Dope D.O.D.

LONG LIVE KORN.

BRUCE LAMONT – Solo Mini-Tour With Man’s Gin To Begin Next Week

Infamous multi-instrumentalist BRUCE LAMONT (Yakuza, Bloodiest, Circle Of Animals, Led Zeppelin 2) will be hitting the road late next week for a short five-show run, touring alongside Man’s Gin. Kicking off with a free show on LAMONT‘s home turf in Chicago, the short tour will run through Ohio, Pennsylvania and will come to a close in Brooklyn at a show headlined by his label mates The Body.

BRUCE LAMONT Mini-Tour With Man’s Gin:

9/02/2011 The Empty Bottle – Chicago, IL [free show with RSVP]

9/03/2011 Kobo – Columbus, OH

9/04/2011 Now That’s Class – Cleveland, OH

9/05/2011 Kung Fu Necktie – Philadelphia, PA

9/06/2011 St. Vitus – Brooklyn, NY w/ The Body

BRUCE LAMONT‘s debut solo album, Feral Songs For The Epic Decline, was released via At A Loss Recordings in January, to which he’s received endless praise from international media outlets and open-minded fans abroad. After touring on the material from the album sporadically over the past year or two, including several shows at this year’s SXSW festival (one of which was an impromptu set with Eyehategod’s Mike Williams), most recently LAMONT completed two back-to-back European tours this Spring; the first with Keelhaul and the second with Macabre, Birdflesh and Rompeprop.

PUSCIFER – Set Oct. 18th 2011 Release Date For “Conditions Of My Parole”

Posted in experimental rock, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on August 16, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

JEROME, ARIZ. – Puscifer, the project ringleader Maynard James Keenan describes as “Twin Peaks in the desert,” will release Conditions of My Parole on Oct. 18 via Puscifer Entertainment.

Man Overboard,” the first single from the album, has been available via iTunes and other digital service providers since July 19, 2011.

“The Verde Valley is an intrinsic part of what Puscifer is,” explains Keenan.  “It’s equal parts Twilight Zone, Mayberry and Road Warrior. The ghosts and aliens, Republicans and Democrats, cowboys and artists living side by side with hostile creatures such as scorpions, spiders, rattlesnakes, javelina and hippies are just a few of the spicy ingredients that give Conditions of My Parole its unique flavor.”

Conditions of My Parole was recorded in Jerome, Ariz. this spring with tracking done amidst the wine barrels from Keenan’s Caduceus Cellars. The album was produced by Keenan, Mat Mitchell, and Josh Eustis.  Contributing musicians for the new album include the aforementioned Keenan, Mitchell, and Eustis as well as Carina Round, Juliette Commagere, Matt McJunkins, Jeff Freidl, Gil and Rani Sharone, Jonny Polonsky, Tim Alexander, Devo Keenan, Alessandro Cortini, Sarah Jones, and Jon Theodore.

Puscifer’s debut album, the infamously censored V is for V***** (2007), charted on both the Rock and Dance singles charts simultaneously (the full album at #9 on the Billboard Rock Album and “C*ntry Boner” at #1 on Billboard’s Dance Singles Chart).  V is for V***** entered the Billboard Top 200 at #25.

The band turned multimedia troupe carried out Keenan’s vision of an evening that seamlessly combined music, recorded skits and live character sketches over two U.S. tours which were described as an “X-rated episode of Hee-Haw” (Spin) and “a performance art spectacle equal parts comedy cabaret show and guerilla theater” (Las Vegas Review Journal). Keenan has often stated in interviews that his concept for Puscifer required nearly two decades to pass before the technology was available to create the live performance.

A North American tour kicks off in early November 2011, with more information to come.

Adrienne Davies – drums & percussion

Released on February 22nd via Southern Lord Recordings, Angels Of Darkness, Demons Of Light 1 represents yet another new chapter in the EARTH lineage, as the band continues to expand their trademark slow-morphing drone a bit beyond the realms they’ve explored on their last handful of releases and recent years of touring, and continuing to reproduce continually inspiring music as they have with every recording to date.

“…unlike most heavy-music acts it changed over time as human beings actually do. Its music became lighter and clearer and wiser; it started having more to do with Indian music and La Monte Young and Miles Davis’s ‘In a Silent Way.’” – The New York Times

“As Earth developed its heavy instrumental vision in the past six years, subtle deviation has been crucial to the band’s renewal. Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light 1  is the latest installment in that trajectory, adding a cello, desert blues and British folk-rock motifs to Earth’s slow-moving Americana.” – NPR

Earth – A Metal Odyssey Interview With Adrienne Davies

Posted in avant-garde music, doom metal, drone metal, experimental music, experimental rock, interviews, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music interviews, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on March 12, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

ADRIENNE DAVIES OF EARTH – When a band can stop you in your tracks by making you slow down and think about their music, that respective band is standing out amongst the crowd. Step in… Earth. This is not a Doom Metal band that is going to thunder stump their songs through live sets, nor are they about churning out songs for wide-spread commercial consumption. Instead, Earth is a band that is representative of their music and shows respect for song, putting forth awareness to the brilliance of experimental, drone and Doom Rock. With an existence that encompasses over twenty years and six albums, founding member, songwriter and guitarist Dylan Carlson has crafted Earth into a non-conforming band of widely respected musicians.

One of these skilled musicians is Adrienne Davies, the drummer and percussionist that has been a focal point of Earth for ten years and counting. With the current release of their newest studio album, Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light I (Southern Lord Records) on February 22, 2011, Earth has only strengthened their respect among the Rock Music community for their unique style and sound. The repetitive beats and drone tempo, combined with the atmospheric tones of Earth can lead the listener to wherever place they can imagine or want to be. That’s what I embrace most strongly about the music of Earth… and this band takes you on a slow ride, cause sometimes I like to take it easy.

Adrienne Davies took the time recently to talk about Earth’s new album, how their songs come together, drumming, Earth’s diversity album to album, her fellow band members and even Slayer. Soft spoken, polite and as friendly as a favorite cousin, Adrienne was a true delight to interview. The love she has for music, Earth and Dylan Carlson flowed from her answers with ease… and Adrienne presented herself with a trueness that I can absolutely respect. Here is what Adrienne had to say:

Stone: Organic, atmospheric, experimental, drone and Doom Metal are styles used to describe the music of Earth. What is your interpretation of Earth’s sound?

Adrienne: It’s more intricate than it seems. Earth has been around for over twenty years, I’ve been in the band for ten years. You have to look at this band’s history, album to album. The first few were specifically Heavy Doom or had Metal bass lines to everything. “Hex” (from 2005) was a very strategic departure from heavy for heavy sakes. The trombone (played by Steve Moore) gave a western soundtrack feel of “Hex”. I’ve learned, melodies that are least contrived can be the most dark than most of them. Our new album is organic with an English Folk vibe to it. This album centers around drone and repetition, it has a soothing quality.

Stone: In your own view, who really are the “Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light”?

Adrienne: Dylan (Carlson) has credit to that title! Conceptually, this album title can represent crazy, old Medieval magic from years past. Musically, we’re simplifying and letting open spaces fill. We (Dylan and I) have no computers or cell phones, we’re stepping away from technology and going back to times when things were simpler. It’s like being the park in the middle of the city.

Stone: In the event Earth’s new album was to have been named after a country, which one would it be and why?

Adrienne: Album wise, “Hex” was very much Native American, with an Idaho, Montana and West Coast Indian vibe. I’m gonna take it literally and go with Old England, somewhere towards Wales, with grassy knolls and cottages. I like old throwback English Folk bands, the fairy tales and magic of all that.

Stone: You would certainly like living in Northern New England then. Vermont, New Hampshire, rural Massachusetts and Maine pretty much are this country’s representation of Old England.

Adrienne: You know, I never thought about that and you are right! New England can resemble Old England in ways.

Stone: Can you describe what it’s like during a brainstorm session with your band mates?

Adrienne: Generally, the last two albums, especially this one, we brainstormed. We come up with riffs and song structures. We want to leave some parts as improv. The drums and guitars are the anchor of our songs of where we want to go. We’ll pull in the cello, along with counter lead melody instruments that are essential to our lineup, the Wurlitzer, trombone and pedal steel.

Stone: How far has Earth come to creating their ultimate signature album with “Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light I”?

Adrienne: Well, let’s see, it’s never what you think it is. It’s in the ear of the beholder. We try to leave it up to other people to decide. What I’m comfy about with this new album, is it’s a new direction for us in many ways. The studio has always been about obsessive perfection and moments of release. This time we were carefree, very creative and able to improvise. Creating this new album was obstruction free and the best time ever for us in the studio. Our songs get a little slower live, so most of these songs represent what Earth is about live. We seemed to capture what we do with our live shows on this new album.

Stone: It’s interesting that your songs get played slower live.

Adrienne: Our songs change dramatically live!

Stone: Is the band collectively on the same page when it comes to other musical influences and musical interests?

Adrienne: When your stuck on tour with the same band and don’t kill each other, you have commonalities! We have a kaleidoscope to draw from with influences. Lori (Goldston) can play cello with an avant-garde and experimental style, making it sound like an electrical instrument, it’s like having a second guitar in the band. Karl (Blau) has a Rhythm and Blues feel with his bass. We take all these influences, put them together and hopefully get the result we are looking for.

Stone: How would you describe contemporary music to a visitor from another world?

Adrienne: (laughs) Contemporary good or bad music?

Stone: I’m glad you said that!

Adrienne: I’m not a fan of current contemporary music. VH1 and MTV are beyond un-listenable and it’s poisoning the ears of people who listen to this music. I would compare it to alphabet soup, with too many letters that are all broken.

Stone: If you could listen to just one Metal band while being stranded on an island, what band would it be?

Adrienne: Deep Purple is okay. If it’s only one Metal band, can I have all their albums?

Stone: Well, alright.

Adrienne: It would be Slayer! Slayer for certain. They are and always have been my Metal band! I like my share of Metal, it’s always in my heart.

Stone: When were you first exposed to playing drums or any instrument for that matter?

Adrienne: I came from a music oriented family. My mom had a band and came from a German family of musicians. I grew up the only girl with four brothers, one brother and three step-brothers. I first started playing drums in my fifth grade school band. At this same time of year, I was given a sixties Ludwig set of drums, a blue oyster color that was not in the best of shape. I fought my brothers off of it! I was happy that I didn’t play the flute, just because I’m a female. I did play guitar for awhile. I’ve become more serious in terms of drums, percussion and rhythm in the last eight years.

Stone: Well, you have certainly represented yourself quite well with drumming for Earth.

Adrienne: Thank you. To this day, there are not a lot of female drummers. Only recently there has been a burst  of females playing drums. There’s no real role models for female drummers to look up to and we don’t get the respect of our male peers in the drum world.

Stone: That’s a shame, really.

Adrienne: It’s a notion that the best drummers out there play two hundred beats per minute and twenty minute solo’s. It’s really the musicianship that’s essential to being a good drummer. On the other hand, with guitar and Metal, speed is equated to technical proficiency with artistry. It’s what I don’t play and knowing what not to fill a song with, having a less is always more approach for drums and percussion that represents my style. I like to make it dramatic, rather than pummel a song to death. I want to play the technical side of drums, while always serving the music.

Stone: What does the touring schedule look like for Earth in 2011?

Adrienne: We’re looking at six weeks in Europe, then having a month off. Then it’s off to Mexico City, we’ll then hit the U.S. West Coast, down to the Southeast and head up to the Northeast U.S. in the Fall and end of year. The dates and venues are to be determined. We’ll be playing clubs. Who can fill arena’s anymore?

Stone: It’s an entirely different climate now for bands to play arena’s.

Adrienne: It sure is. Even with Ireland’s bad economy, touring Ireland didn’t affect our ticket sales. The big bands are really hurting for record and concert sales.

Stone: Will there ever be a female President of the United States in your lifetime? If so, who would you want it to be?

Adrienne: I’m at a loss on that one, yikes! Can I nominate a non-politician?

Stone: Of course!

Adrienne: Chrissie Hynde.

Stone: Cool choice.

Adrienne: (laughs) Very darn close to Hillary Clinton huh? Not that she (Chrissie Hynde) would want this to happen. She comes from a working class background. She could stand up to the big boys. Chrissie would do a real good job in The White House.

Stone: What are the events that take place or need to happen, for npr (National Public Radio) to stream “Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light I” in it’s entirety for fans to hear free, like they did?

Adrienne: It’s almost a mystery to me! We’re incredibly grateful, npr goes back to “Hex”, they were really behind us with our music and pushing that album as well. It’s great, it’s awesome! I can’t comprehend how big it all really is. On “Bees” (The Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull) we had a guest musician, a Jazz guitarist named Bill Frisell who had an audience bigger than we’re used to having. I think maybe through his connection npr picked us up. iTunes are going to be doing a sale two weeks before our new album is released, they’re putting it on their Rock page! We’re honored by that.

Stone: That is just fantastic and well deserved, with all of the attention your new album is receiving.

Adrienne: Thank you. There’s so many bands and so many choices out there. Many are here today and gone tomorrow. We’ve been lucky. I’ve known Dylan (Carlson) for half of my life, he’s got crazy bizarre talent! Dylan has been around and making music for over twenty years and I thank my lucky stars everyday that he’s my man.
