Melvins - 30th Anniversary Tour - promo flyer - 2013

“EVERYBODY LOVES SAUSAGES” AVAILABLE APRIL 30; ALBUM WITH BUZZ’S COMMENTARY STREAMING VIA SPIN

 ____________________________________

April 23, 2013, LOS ANGELES – The Melvins celebrate their 30th anniversary with an extensive North American tour, kicking off on July 12 in Phoenix, Ariz.

“Has it really only been 30 years?” asked singer/guitar player Buzz Osborne. “Dang!  Thanks to everyone who’s been there for us!  It’s been an exciting trip and I probably should have listened and learned more. I apologize for anything I’ve ever done wrong and for anything I’m going to do wrong… Ha!”

Everybody Loves Sausages, a 13-track covers album including songs by Queen, Roxy Music and Venom, is the next release for the tricenerians. The album features guests Mark Arm, Jello Biafra, JG Thirlwell and Scott Kelly.  Spin is currently streaming the album, with commentary from Buzz, in its entirety (http://www.spin.com/articles/melvins-covers-album-stream-everybody-loves-sausages-buzzo/).

The Washington-based band formed in 1983 by Montesano High School classmates Osborne, Matt Lukin and Mike Dillard.  The legendary outfit experienced its first line-up shift soon thereafter as Lukin and Dillard left the band with drummer Dale Crover stepping in, leading to one of rock music’s longest running partnerships.  In the intervening years the band, sometimes a trio and sometimes a quartet, has released over twenty studio albums, a dozen live records and innumerable singles and EPs.   In 2012 they embarked on the epic 51 States in 51 days tour and have recently added Melvins Lite, a new incarnation of the band featuring stand-up bassist Trevor Dunn, with the 2012 release of Freak Puke.

The Melvins launch a month-long European tour today in France with both Melvins Lite and the traditional Melvins line-up performing at various dates (full details below).  Other upcoming dates for the band include performances at Maryland Deathfest and Scion Rock Fest as well as trio of dates in Pennsylvania and Ohio.

The Melvins return with a 13-track covers album titled Everybody Loves Sausages, which is set for an Apr. 30 release via Ipecac Recordings.

“This record will give people a peak into the kind of things that influence us musically,” explains Buzz Osborne. “We REALLY like all of these songs along with the bands who actually wrote this stuff because first and foremost we are HUGE music fans.”

In a decidedly Melvins approach to a covers album, the band not only selected a unique assortment of songs to cover, ranging from Roxy Music’s “In Every Dream Home A Heartache” to Queen’s “Best Friend,” they also enlisted several friends to take part including Mudhoney’s Mark Arm joining them for The Scientists’ “Set It On Fire” and Neurosis’ Scott Kelly pitching in on a cover of Venom’s “Warhead.”

While the release is billed as a proper Melvins’ album (featuring the line-up of Osborne, Dale Crover, Jared Warren and Coady Willis), there are a handful of songs recorded as the Melvins Lite incarnation of the band (Osborne, Crover and Trevor Dunn):  “Female Trouble” (Divine a.k.a. John Waters), “Timothy Leary Lives” (Pop-O-Pies) and “Romance By Tales of Terror” (Tales of Terror).

The complete track listing with original artist and guest player notation:

BAND’S ATTEMPT AT GUINNESS WORLD RECORD FOR FASTEST TOUR OF THE UNITED STATES BY A BAND KICKS OFF SEPT. 5 IN ALASKA; THE MELVINS CHRONICLING THEIR ADVENTURE ON SPIN WEBSITE

____________________________

July 31, 2012, LOS ANGELES —  The Melvins’ Buzz Osborne shares the story of the band’s first tour via an animated clip on Pitchfork TV’s “Frames” (http://pitchfork.com/tv/frames/1914-melvins/3117-first-tour/#ooid=E3Nm5mNTocmZ_r3eLDn6TFjHet8t1gWP).

The Melvins will attempt to become the Guinness World Record holders for the first band to tour the full United States and D.C. in 51 days with a tour kicking off Sept. 5 in Anchorage, Alaska and wrapping up Oct. 25 in Honolulu, Hawaii.  The Los Angeles-based band’s exploits will be chronicled on Spin’s website via an ongoing tour diary.

“We figured it was time for us to do something REALLY crazy,” said Osborne. “51 shows in 50 states plus 1 on D.C. and all in 51 days?  Jeez!  I wonder if we can do it?”

The tour, which will feature the Melvins Lite line-up of Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover and Trevor Dunn, also marks the first time in the band’s near 30-year history that they will perform in Alaska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Delaware and Hawaii.

Freak Puke, the debut release from Melvins Lite, was released in early June. “First off, it’s almost impossible for us to convey to people that we plan on having both versions of the Melvins happening at the same time,” Osborne recently told Exclaim Magazine.  “So, for the record, we now have TWO versions of the Melvins, Melvins regular and Melvins Lite… Got it?”

Prior to the Fall, the Melvins have a full spate of appearances.  The band perform two shows in conjunction with Subliminal Projects: June 8 at The Echoplex in Los Angeles and June 30 at  TT Underground Gallery in New York.  Buzz Osborne will be a guest on Fox News’ “Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld” on June 28.   Melvins Lite will also venture north for a three week trek of primarily Canadian tour dates that kicks off on July 1 (dates below).

Melvins Lite “Freak Puke” – I’ve Listened. I Dig It. I Highly Recommend It. Will It Really All Matter? I Hope So…

Posted in alternative rock, experimental rock, Hard Rock, Music, rock albums, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on June 3, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

MELVINS LITE – The irrefutable legendary band known across Earth as The Melvins are Melvins Lite with their new studio album Freak Puke. This ten song offering from Melvins Lite will be released on June 5th, 2012, via Ipecac. For loyal and new fans alike, I’ve decided to list some excerpts from past press releases that sheds more “lite” on why The Melvins are Melvins Lite on Freak Puke. Here we go and enjoy:

The Melvins unveil the latest twist in their 29-year history with Melvins Lite, an additional incarnation of the band that finds founders Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover partnering with Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk) for a 10-song release titled Freak Puke.

Buzz Osborne has stated, in a prior press release:

“The Melvins have a long history of mixing up our line-ups and I think that’s what has kept us relevant for so long,” explains Osborne. “Consider the Freak Puke record the fifth side of the four-sided Melvins triangle.”

The Melvins have decided to release an album called “Freak Puke.” AND they’ve decided to call it Melvins “Lite.” It’s still the Melvins of course but the “Lite” moniker comes from the fact that they’ve recorded the entire record with the always busy and fabulously talented Trevor Dunn playing a stand up double bass and it sounds really cool! It’s new musical territory for the Melvins and it works like a charm…”

Stone says, about Freak Puke and other related stuff:

My curiosity for The Melvins came to a boil back in 1993, when Houdini was released. This was the fifth album from The Melvins, so I knew I had some catching up to do with their back catalog. Houdini did it for me and the rest is (who gives a crap) history. I’m guessing once you listen to The Melvins once, you’re sucked in by the uncanny way they make their music different.

Fast forward to 2012 and Freak Puke from Melvins Lite. Wether it’s Houdini, Freak Puke or any other album from The Melvins that’s in-between, I’ve come to the belief that The Melvins follow no musical path but their own. As I write this epic album review, that classic line from (Bill Murray) who played Tripper Harrison in the 1979 comedy film, Meatballs, comes to my mind: “It just doesn’t matter.”

What doesn’t matter Stone? Well, I’ll tell you since you’re pondering. Trying to declare what genre The Melvins or Melvins Lite belongs to… it just doesn’t matter. Caring if anyone out there gives a crap that I really dig Freak Puke… it just doesn’t matter. Telling the world that Freak Puke ranks as a high recommendation from Stone… it just doesn’t matter.

What does matter is The Melvins musical existence. This Freak Puke album from Melvins Lite doesn’t follow a flavor-of-the-month blueprint for gratitude; that slimy gratitude from the snotty hierarchy that manipulates the mainstream. From the onset, Mr. Rip Off reminds me that this band is not ripping off anyone (no pun intended). Besides, I could sit for a month of Mondays and still not be able to name another band that sounds like this. Yes, that’s a grand statement to make, especially when soundalikes are more abundant in the music world than there are synthetic additives found in one Hostess Twinkie.

For those who truly need to know, Freak Puke is a heavy album. You’ll hear heavy guitar, heavy beats and clean vocals. Eccentric vocals at times too. With that said, Freak Puke is also a listen into what’s not heavy and still comes across as… heavy. Experimental. Alternative. Heavy. Sludgy. That’s Freak Puke and yes, I did throw out some damn Rock genres after all. Then again… it just doesn’t matter.

Wait, what does matter is my persuasiveness in prompting you to buy Freak Puke. Don’t follow the robotic crowd of cheerleaders for America’s Got Talent or any other plastic Pop Culture crap on a plate, try to be different. Be very different. Melvins Lite won’t bite. Hey, that rhymed. Still, it just doesn’t matter.

Let your ears become saturated with some Melvins Lite and be introduced to Rock ‘N Roll the way it was meant to be played; Rock ‘N Roll that shoots straight from the hip, without any predetermined obligations to those Rock historian morons that push out 50 pound coffee table books and vote at The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Freak Puke, courtesy of Melvins Lite, aims and succeeds to spread some messed-up fun and madness, on a sonic ride that is an instant remedy for Rock ‘N Roll status-quo-itis.

At the end of my semi-boring day, I surely hope my blab for Melvins Lite and Freak Puke does matter. At least a little bit. Metal be thy name.

Baby, Won’t You Weird Me Out

MELVINS LITE – Debuts With ‘Freak Puke’ On June 5th, 2012

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 27, 2012 – The Melvins unveil the latest twist in their 29-year history with Melvins Lite, an additional incarnation of the band that finds founders Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover partnering with Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk) for a 10-song released titled Freak Puke (June 5, Ipecac Recordings).

“The Melvins have a long history of mixing up our line-ups and I think that’s what has kept us relevant for so long,” explains Osborne. “Consider the Freak Puke record the fifth side of the four-sided Melvins’ triangle.”

Dunn is known as one of Rock and Jazz’s top bass players, performing on both a traditional and upright bass in a wide range of bands and as a freelance musician.  He is currently recording the new Tomahawk album, is a member of Fantômas and was the bassist for Mr. Bungle.

The Melvins will be taping an episode of Last Call with Carson Daly at their Apr. 13 show in Los Angeles. Osborne will join Greg Gutfeld for another chat on June 28 on Fox News’ Red Eye.

Freak Puke was recorded by Toshi Kasai and the Melvins in Los Angeles.
