3.5 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

Metal Fists - 3.5 - Metal Odyssey

COUNTLESS SKIES – This debut and self-titled EP from Hertfordshire, England’s Countless Skies was released back on November 7th of 2014. A self-released EP, Countless Skies does not hold back on creating a crisp production of layered Melodic Death Metal.

The Death Metal vocals of guitarist Ross King and clean vocals of bassist Phil Romeo work well together on this EP and compliment the overall somber atmosphere and vibes that I hear and feel. Then again, there are a good many musical moments within these songs that metamorphosis to a more neutral mood, moments which I can interpret as jubilation trying to fend off a sonic wall of melancholy; if that makes any sense. Countless Skies plays out as a mellifluous dreamscape with a Melodic Death Metal backdrop.

SONY DSC

Please give me some style points for trying to explain! I found this EP to be a quasi-challenge to review, regarding how I would describe it musically. Some may even interpret Countless Skies as progressive in its structure. I do recommend fans of Enslaved to Amorphis to give this band a listen and support them. I recommend Countless Skies to any Metal fan looking for a new and talented band to check out, for that matter.

Melodic Death Metal fans that are looking for the thunder of Amon Amarth be forewarned, Countless Skies are much more subtle about the power to devour. This is an EP I will definitely add to my playlist and I’m happy to spread the Metal word about. Metal be thy name – Stone

COMING AUGUST 2015!

As reported by Napalm Records:

Almost six years have passed since the world saw a new studio album from Metal Icons W.A.S.P. That is about to change as W.A.S.P. has signed a new worldwide record deal with Austria’s Napalm Records. W.A.S.P. will release their 15th studio album titled Golgotha this August.

“W.A.S.P. are excited to announce they have signed an exclusive recording contract with Napalm Records. We chose Napalm for their personal belief and professional commitment to our career. We’re looking forward to years of great success together starting with the release of our upcoming album Golgotha”, states W.A.S.P. front man Blackie Lawless.

“It is a true honor to announce this signing today, a dream has come true. With their impressive career and ability to create musical masterpieces W.A.S.P have always been one of the most influential Metal bands out there since the beginning of their career. We are thrilled about the upcoming album Golgotha which will be released this summer!” – Vice President of Napalm Records Thomas Caser

W.A.S.P. came out of the Los Angeles Metal scene in 1982 gaining notoriety for their shock rock antics. With a career spanning over 3 decades, 17 world tours, and now their 15th studio album, they are a metal band that has evolved in maturity without having lost their signature sound, unlike many of their peers from their origins. Golgotha will continue down the path that 2007’s Dominator and 2009’s Babylon started on, both in production style and theme. Six years in the making, Golgotha will undoubtedly lead the listeners on the emotionally epic undertaking that W.A.S.P. has become acclaimed for!

MERIDIUS Self-Titled EP – A Metal Odyssey Album Review

4 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall4

MERIDIUS is a Thrash Metal band out of British Columbia, Canada and their 3 song, self-titled EP has been released on March 20th. I really dig this band’s logo and the chosen color of red on black. That’s old school, man. Hopefully I don’t use this “old school” phrase too often; only old school kicks major ass and I live for old school Metal. Are you old school?

This EP contains a whole lot of guitar crunch, along with plenty of reasons to crank up the volume LOUD and bang thy head. The guitar solo on Walk The Plank is unreal good stuff and I admire how MERIDIUS mellows out musically in the final minute of this song; a courageous touch that works just fine for me.

Meridius - Promo Band Pic - 2015 - #03M21MO

I’m really impressed by how in-your-face the guitars are and still the vocals and rhythm section explode into the forefront as well. In other words, nothing gets buried in these songs. Another impressive element to MERIDIUS is the vocals of Eric Willmott who pronounces the lyrics in a Tom Araya (South Of Heaven) style.

What I really enjoy most is this band is a bounty of Thrash Metal promise and they don’t go for the need-for-speed route; one that would transform them into an Extreme band anyways. MERIDIUS sounds like they’re on course for some great achievements in Metal, both with their convincing musical talent and strong EP of songs. I’ll be keeping my eyes and ears on MERIDIUS. Metal be thy name. – Stone

BIOTOXIC WARFARE “Lobotomized” – A Metal Odyssey Album Review

Posted in Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, Thrash Metal with tags , , , , on March 28, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Biotoxic Warfare - Lobotomized - promo cover pic - #2015BW

4.5 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

4.5 metal-fists-4-5-album-reviews-metal-odyssey

Biotoxic Warfare released their debut full-length, Lobotomized, on January 19th of this year, via Slaney Records. This amazing album will be released in North America on June 23rd, 2015 via Static Tension Recordings. Biotoxic Warfare originates from Greece and list Kreator, Sodom and many of the U.S. old school Death Metal bands as their influences. Biotoxic Warfare have learned well from listening to such legendary influences and it is heard loud and clear on Lobotomized.

The opening track Mors Indecepta is an instrumental, one which builds up at a moderate pace, reminding me of Metallica’s Ride The Lightning era. Biotoxic Warfare plays Thrash Metal that is refreshingly original and they are obviously committed to what their peers Havok and Warbringer have done; that is to write, record and execute old school Thrash with 0% smoke and mirrors.

Biotoxic Warfare - promo band photo - #2015BWTM

Lyrically, Biotoxic Warfare takes no prisoners in standing up to world religions and religious beliefs, on Lobotomized. The cover art to Lobotomized says it all and I do declare the artwork screams: F’N METAL!! What is so great is how much Biotoxic Warfare makes me want to put on unlaced sneakers and a denim jacket, yet I can’t due to the freaking super cold weather we keep having here in Ohio. Yeah, my work boots and leather jacket do keep me warmer. Sorry for the momentary rant.

There are (too many to count) delectable riffs and solos exploding from Lobotomized. Mike on vocals is fabulous and doesn’t sound like any other big name from the past; something I find very embracing! Dimator on lead guitar and Stelios on rhythm guitar are an unreal six string duo to listen to, damn right they are! The rhythm section of Panagiwtis PS on bass and Orestis on drums round out this band and yes they kick Metal ass on Lobotomized too.

LISTEN to ENTIRE album below! Whoa!

Seriously, Biotoxic Warfare is a Thrash Metal band that the Metal community across every continent MUST know about and get on board with. All 8 songs on Lobotomized are formidable and worthy of being the opening track to this album. It would be sensational to see one of our Big 4 bands take Biotoxic Warfare out on tour with them; Thrash fans need to know that our Metal future has Biotoxic Warfare in it and all will be okay. Metal be thy name. – Stone

Lobotomized – Track List: Mors Indecepta, Proclaim The Gospel Of Lies, Baptized In Blood And Greed, Dysphoric Reality, Lobotomized, Lust For Hate, Parasitic Life, As We Rot (Promises Of Heaven)

4.5 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

4.5 metal-fists-4-5-album-reviews-metal-odyssey

Releasing on March 31st is the I Will Get Your Soul EP from Colombia’s NEPENTE, via Cimmerian Shade Recordings. NEPENTE is a Blackened Death Metal band and they turn it up many notches on the Extreme as well. Metal truth be told, I Will Get Your Soul has to rank in the top 50 of most Extreme Metal albums I’ve ever listened to. Let’s face it, that isn’t too shabby. Shit, no.

This EP is mandatory Metal for every underground Hell Rat, Center Earth Dweller and Extreme Metaller. The totality of force that NEPENTE drives into my skull with their Metal is simply invigorating! I love this stuff and it feels great to listen to. The demon on the album cover artwork is a bullseye symbol for NEPENTE’s Metal extremity. The song titles (see below) I adore and are lyrically smashing!

If you have neighbors giving you shit, just crank up this new NEPENTE EP and they’ll never bother you again. Seriously. If Extreme Metal ever needed a new ambassador to spread the word and defend its Metal faithful then NEPENTE is it! Guitarist/songwriter Pablo Vasquez and his band are Metal warriors and this EP is 100% sonic proof. Metal be thy name. – Stone

THE SHRINE “Waiting For The War” 12″ – A Metal Odyssey Album Review

The Shrine - Waiting For The War - promo album cover pic - 2015 - #0327TSMO

4 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall4

A 3 song 12″ that I have discovered to be damn good is Waiting For The War from The Shrine. This ultra cool slab of vinyl is available over at Tankcrimes:

http://tankcrimes.merchtable.com/distributed-music/vinyl/the-shrine-waiting-for-the-war-12-maxi-single#.VRViV0vLDwI

The title track for this EP is in general terms Punk, in the vein of an aggressive Ramones and not Sex Pistols. Maybe some will call this song Crossover Thrash or Skate Punk. Call it what you will, the title track ROCKS and that’s the main concern. The second track is Rare Breed and it’s Stoner Metal, with spirals of golden sonic psychedelia. Do not think The Sword, instead think early Uriah Heep meets Tony Iommi; or something like that. If you visit The Shrine’s Facebook page, they list their genre as: Psychedelic Violence Rock and Roll. ‘Nuff said.

The third track, Waiting For The War, is Metal. The fret work tells me so. This song is an instrumental and it jams, baaabbbyyy! Playing out at 4:22, I wish Waiting For The War had another 5 minutes added on to it. Really. Good stuff. I recommend The Shrine to any fan of kick to the arse underground Metal. Metal be thy name.

DEAD EARTH POLITICS “Men Become Gods” – A Metal Odyssey Album Review

Dead Earth Politics - Men Become Gods - promo EP cover pic - #2015DEPMO

4.5 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

4.5 metal-fists-4-5-album-reviews-metal-odyssey

Men Become Gods is the second of three EPs that Dead Earth Politics are serving up to the Metal masses. Originating from Austin, Texas, Dead Earth Politics deliver a Classic Metal meets Groove Metal style, with plenty of relevant Metal vibes cascading from their songs, on this EP. With 4 songs to sink your Metal ears into, Dead Earth Politics do play melodic songs without sacrificing on the heavy side. The rhythm section is both strapping and rapid, while the guitarists are an absolute treat to listen to. Overall, the vocals from Ven are clean and aggressive; you’ll catch on to the lyrics without any problem… think James Hetfield and/or Sully Erna.

Dead Earth Politics - promo band pic - 2015 - #0327DEPMO

In a perfect world that does not exist, Dead Earth Politics are a band that has created some great songs that walk the fine-line of being mainstream acceptable; this band should really have no problem continuing their catapult to much wider success around the world-wide Metal community. Dead Earth Politics have combined the raw power of today’s American made Metal and solid production that is downright impressive. I became a believer in Dead Earth Politics, with their first EP release: The Queen Of Steel; now I am a boasting fan of these Metal Texans. Metal be thy name. – Stone

Track List: Casting Stones, Men Become Gods, Ice & Fire, Crimson Dichotomy

SAHHR call Los Angeles, California home and are a Black Metal band. Their new 3 song and self-titled EP is bloodthirsty and scalding to my Metal senses! CRUZ DEL SUR MUSIC will release the debut album Kingdom of the Hammer King from new epic Power Metal sensation HAMMER KING on May 5th in North America!

HAMMER KING represent the perfect, balanced heavy sound of the German Power Metal tradition, highlighted by  the right dose of epic tones. The music  moves around the figure of singer/guitarist/composer Titan Fox (ROSS THE BOSS’ singer). The line-up is completed by former SALTATIO MORTIS drummer Dolph A. Macallan, K.K. Basement on bass and Gino Wilde on guitar. All the musicians involved in this band have an aged and trained background in Metal music, as demonstrated through the masterful Kingdom of the Hammer King!

What surprises most on the album is the catchy immediacy of the compositions. Indeed, the melodies and glorious guitar solos embed and remain in the brain. “Aderlass;  blood of Sacrifice,” “Chancellor of Glory,” and the title track are a perfect examples of epic Power Metal anthems that’ll have you singing at the top of your lungs and fist-pumping for the duration. All killer, no filler; Kingdom of the Hammer King is the complete package!

Midwestern Metal act Entropy O.A.C. has inked a deal with Pavement Entertainment that will see the release of the band’s newest EP, Dark Clouds and Clarity on April 21.

The band has posted a video for the track “Realm of Grey” at this location.

Entropy O.A.C. comes from the land of decrepit barns and more miles of tree lines than anyone cares to see, but this universal sometimes melodic, sometimes Metal band calls Northern Wisconsin it’s home. This intriguing, middle of nowhere group consists of singer Ben Poulin, guitarist Austin Wagner, drummer Brandon Hall, and Bassist Josh Aalto.

Seasoned veterans of the scene, Entropy O.A.C. has one full length record, Smiles For Stab Wounds, which the band self-financed and recorded at Pachyderm Studios where the likes of Nirvana, Mudvayne, Live and many more have done studio recording. The album was primarily engineered and mixed by Adrian Olsgard. The record saw Entropy O.A.C. praised by fans and critics alike, who referred to them as unique, yet powerfully influential. In 2011, the band returned with the What Nightmares Are Made Of EP, which eventually led to a developmental record deal with Pavement Entertainment.

The combination of years of experience and a forward-thinking vision has resulted in Etropy O.A.C’s newest and most engaging material, Dark Clouds and Clarity. The three-track EP is set for an April 21 release via Pavement Entertainment.

“UNREST gets the NASUM grind seal of approval!” – Anders Jakobson

9/10! – Decibel Magazine

If the band name doesn’t spell it out for you, the album title surely will. This is nothing but grindcore – stripped down, unpretentious, and loud. At the same time, it’s much more than that. UNREST is comprised of craftsmen from bands both familiar (WOE, TRENCHROT and those about to be (Dark Descent’s up-and-coming doom act, CRYPT SERMON).

The riff and song construction throughout this debut album is right in line from what you’d expect from a group of such capable veterans. They wear their NASUM (and by proxy, NAPALM DEATH) influence on their sleeves, but through sheer mastery of the craft elevate the material well beyond a mere tribute to old masters.

SHOW WILL TAKE PLACE JUNE 12TH AT THE WILTERN THEATRE – LOS ANGELES

ROCK ‘N’ ROLL AUCTION ITEMS WILL BE AVAILABLE

PROCEEDS TO BENEFIT MUSIC INDUSTRY VETERAN AND FRIEND – CLIFF CULTRERI

__________________________

(Los Angeles, CA – March 24, 2015) Legendary guitarists JOE SATRIANI and STEVE VAI announce plans for a third benefit concert in support of music industry veteran and good friend, Cliff Cultreri.

“A Benefit for Cliff III” will take place on Friday, June 12th at 8pm at Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles.  This event will feature performances by Satriani and Vai, as well as special guests, Animals As Leaders.

In addition to this extraordinary musical event, Satriani and Vai, along with other artists, have graciously donated various items to be auctioned at the event.  Among these items are autographed guitars as well as a chance to join Satriani’s “G4 Camp” taking place June 28 – July 2  in Cambria, CA and a package to attend Vai’s camp, “Vai Academy 2015 – All About The Guitar” in Vail, CO, August 2-6 as well.

Cliff Cultreri is the A&R executive who ‘discovered’ Satriani and Vai, as well as many other popular recording artists, while working at Relativity Records and Koch Entertainment. Cultreri is suffering from a host of Auto-Immune and Connective-Tissue disorders that are simultaneously attacking his immune system, a 1 in 100 million occurrence that causes severe pain and physical debilitations.  During his years in the industry, Cultreri has served as A&R for a number of top names including Allan Holdsworth, Billy Sheehan & Talas, Peter Frampton, Megadeth, Corrosion Of Conformity, Exodus, Anthrax, Death, Venom, Slash’s Snakepit, My Bloody Valentine, The Cure, Modern English, Gene Loves Jezebel, Fat Joe, Common, Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony, 3-6 Mafia, KRS1, Beatnuts, C Murder, Kurupt, Soulja Slim, RZA, and many others in all genres of music.

In 2006, Satriani and Vai joined forces for the first Cultreri benefit show and in 2011, came together again for the second.  Through both benefits, the duo have raised money and brought attention to the devastation this disease takes on both the patient and their family.

Satriani and Vai hope to raise even more funds with this year’s benefit to help Cultreri and his family’s financial needs. “I’m looking forward to sharing the stage with my good friends Steve Vai and Animals as Leaders for a night of unforgettable music,” said Satriani.  With Vai adding, “It’s a great privilege to take to the stage with my friends Joe and Tosin (of Animals As Leaders) in support of our dear buddy Cliff.  It’s a great cause and will be a magical evening of guitar extravaganza.”

Reserved tickets start at $45 and are on sale now through ticketmaster.com/.  A limited number of VIP packages, including a meet and greet with Satriani and Vai, are also available.  Doors will be at 7 pm with the show set to begin at 8 pm.

The Endless Winter from Thrashened Black Metal unit FROSTHELM is out today on Matt Hyde’s BLACK WORK (ALKEMY BROTHERS). Stream some audio aggression and order the album at this location. The album is also available from iTunes.

“A definite Euro/cold guitar tone but with an American ‘something’ added. I hear Immortal meets The Black Dahlia Murder, and that’s something I’ve not yet heard.” – Chance Garnette (Skeletonwitch)

A vile brew of Black/Thrash Metal, The Endless Winter is abundant with punishingly memorable riffs, melodic frostbitten savagery, and plague infused revulsion down to its frozen core. Guitarist Dakota L. Irwin describes the album as “bitter, dark, angry and disgusted.”

CROM DUBH – London Epic Black Metal Sect Releases Debut Album “Heimweh” Through Ván Records

Posted in Metal, metal bands, metal music, Music, rock music with tags , , , on March 23, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

CROM DUBH - promo band pic - 2015 - #0324CDMO37

Germany’s Ván Records is proud to have London-based epic Black Metal sect, CROM DUBH, a part of their ever-expanding roster, as the band’s debut full-length album Heimweh is released onto the masses.

Merging melodic yet merciless black metal with folk and post-rock influences, CROM DUBH‘s debut full-length, Heimweh (meaning homesickness), continues the narrative of the band’s 2010 EP, Deifr, in which the gathering and dissolution of a great river operated as a metaphor for the rise and fall of nations and civilizations.

Heimweh follows a similar narrative, albeit with a focus on the life of the lone individual within this tumult, following a traditional cradle-to-grave progression throughout the course of the album that runs parallel to Hesiod’s five ages of man. The album handles themes of loss, ruthlessness, nostalgia, exile, and death, thinking on the journey ahead and the way home.

CROM DUBH was formed in 2003 by M. Beonetleah (Craven Idol), S. O’Fairdehaigh (Disfago), and Xavi (El Punto Devil). A rehearsal demo was recorded in 2003, and the Damnation Upon Us demo was recorded in 2004. Ro (Grave Miasma, Cruciamentum, Destroyer 666) joined to record the Fallen Sons demo in 2005. Xavi and Ro left to pursue other projects, and A. Haege joined on drums. CROM DUBH recorded and released the 2010 EP, Deifr (Ground Zero), as a three-piece, before being joined by S. Vrath (Scythian, Craven Idol) and A. Von M (Scythian). A. Von M played live with the band on several occasions before leaving the band on good terms.

Recorded by J. C. Volgard (Scythian, Craven Idol) in the Summer and Autumn of 2013, CROM DUBH‘s first full-length opus Heimweh presents forty-five minutes of majestic yet menacing northern black metal with an incredible storyline to overthrow fans of Dissection, early Summoning, Taake, Drudkh, Tsjuder, Carpathian Forest and the like.

The second movement from Heimweh, “Cutting Teeth II,” has been released via Ván Records’ SoundCloud page RIGHT HERE.

Heimweh is now available on CD and LP directly through Ván Records HERE. US order links will be available shortly.

Heimweh – Track Listing:

  1. Cutting Teeth I
  2. Cutting Teeth II
  3. The Invulnerable Tide
  4. Kings I
  5. Kings II
  6. Sedition
  7. Heimweh
  8. Fathorn
  9. Sailing To Byzantium

CROM DUBH:

S. O’Fairdehaigh – bass, vocals
A. Haege – drums
S. Vrath – guitars
M. Beonetleah – guitars, vocals
