Savage Land is the forthcoming debut full-length from death metal perpetrators, GRUESOME. Featuring within their bestial ranks members of Exhumed, Possessed, Malevolent Creation and Derketa, GRUESOME is a supergroup of sorts paying homage to the game-changing sounds of Death’s early recordings.
GRUESOME was borne out of guitarist/vocalist Matt Harvey (Exhumed) and drummer Gus Rios’ (Malevolent Creation) mutual involvement with the Death To All tours – Harvey serving as frontman for the original nine-member mini-tour and Rios performing “Baptized In Blood” and working with DTA drummer Sean Reinert on the following US tour where Exhumed filled in as support on a several dates.
After discarding the idea of putting together another incarnation of DTA to focus exclusively on Death’s first two albums, Harvey half-jokingly suggested writing their own songs in that vein. It wasn’t long before the idea gained traction, and the “band” had five songs written. Rios later recruited Possessed guitarist Daniel Gonzalez and Derketa bassist Robin Mazen to record the material in Florida.
The result is the eight scathing tracks contained on Savage Land. Recorded by Rios and Gonzalez at Riversound Studios in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, mixed by Jarrett Pritchard at Mana Studios in St. Petersburg, Florida and including a guest guitar solo on “Closed Casket” by James Murphy as well as cover art by legendary illustrator Ed Repka (Death, Megadeth, Massacre, Athiest et el), Savage Land is a truly gruesome slab of late-’80s/early-’90s Florida-styled Death Metal.
Set for release next month, today team GRUESOME offers up fourth track “Hideous” for communal absorption. The track is based on 1932 horror film, Freaks, in which the characters were played by people who worked as carnival sideshow performers and had real deformities. The original version was considered too shocking to be released, and no longer exists.
Rios further elaborates, “‘Hideous’ was one of the last songs to be written for the album. By that point Matt had really hit a stride with the writing and this song turned out to be one of our favorites! It seamlessly blends influences from the first three Death albums with even a tiny tip of the hat to Human. Listen closely after the solo section…you’ll swear it’s 1988 for real! We sincerely hope that everyone enjoys this as much as we did creating it! Hail Chuck [Schuldiner]!”
Sample “Hideous” via SoundCloud HERE or YouTube HERE.
Tragically, there will never be any truly new Death material, but GRUESOME is humbly determined to keeping the band’s classic sound alive as faithfully as possible. Savage Landwill be released in North America via Relapse Records on April 21st, 2015, April 17th in Germany, Benelux and Finland and April 20th in the UK, rest of the world on CD and digitally. “Absolutely kick-ass in its own right, but also an authentic form of homage to Death.” – No Clean Singing
“From the very beginning I was fascinated by Frets On Fire (PC) and Guitar Hero (game console). I always wondered how hard such a game could be, while spending hours in front of the goggle-box. This is why we came up with the idea to create our Frets On Fire – Nothgard Songs. Just because we thought this would be fucking cool. Now we have 2 songs from our latest record to download.

GRUESOME is a debilitating Death Metal faction featuring members of Exhumed, Possessed, Malevolent Creation and Derketa. A respectful celebration of the sound of the early Death records, the collective was borne out of guitarist/vocalist Matt Harvey (Exhumed) and drummer Gus Rios’ (Malevolent Creation) mutual involvement with the Death To All tours, with Harvey serving as frontman for the original nine-member mini-tour and Rios performing “Baptized In Blood” and working with DTA drummer Sean Reinert on the following US tour where Exhumed filled in as support on a several dates. The pair stayed in touch and discussed their mutual love (obsession?) for the early half of Death’s catalog.
After deliberating and ultimately discarding the idea of putting together another incarnation of DTA to focus exclusively on the first two albums, Harvey half-jokingly suggested writing their own songs in that vein. It wasn’t long before the idea gained traction, and the “band” had five songs written. With Harvey composing in California, Rios recruited Possessed guitarist Daniel Gonzalez and Derketa bassist Robin Mazen to record the material in Florida, while Harvey tracked his vocals on the West Coast. The result is eight-track debut, Savage Land, a truly gruesome slab of late-’80s/early-’90s Florida-styled Death Metal. Tragically, there will never be any truly new Death material, but GRUESOME is humbly determined to keeping the band’s classic sound alive as faithfully as possible.

Elaborates Harvey, “We had such a blast writing and recording this album, I just hope people enjoy it half as much as I enjoyed doing it. It was a great experience working with my friends in Florida and getting to write and record my take on the Death sound. I’m beyond happy with the way everything came out and I hope people take it as the loving, respectful piece of work that it is. I know that sounds counterintuitive for a death metal album, but the whole band is really a super nerdy fan letter to Chuck [Schuldiner], James [Murphy], Rick [Rozz], Terry [Butler], Chris [Reifert], Paul [Masvidal], Sean [Reinert], and Stevie D [DiGiorgio] for making records that have given me literally decades of enjoyment. Having had a chance to meet and hang out with all of those dudes from the early Death days, with the exception of Bill Andrews, has been nothing but humbling, rewarding, enlightening and has only deepened my love for the band and made it that much more personal. So I decided to write an album about ’80s horror movies and deadly diseases, which is what anyone would do under the circumstances, right? Anyway, if you like late ’80s Death, I sincerely hope you enjoy our take on it, which is really what this album is, with all the drippy blood and inverted crosses in the logo that it implies.”

Greatly expanding their previously announced Spain Tour, Belgian raging Death Metal horde DEHUMAN (feat. Laye Louhenapessy also drummer for PUTRID OFFAL) have now announced a complete two weeks tour of Southern Europe that will drive them to Italy, France, Spain and Portugal in support of their brand new full-length, “Graveyard of Eden” which is currently available for preorders with a release date set to March 09 (World) / 10 (North America and digital).
ALTERBEAST originate from Sacramento, California and released their debut full-length album, Immortal, back in March of 2014 via Unique Leader Records. You can call ALTERBEAST Death Metal and/or Technical Death Metal. The guitars and bass were recorded at Augmented Audio in Los Angeles, with former The Black Dahlia Murder bassist Ryan “Bart” Williams.
ALTERBEAST formed in 2011 under the working title: Gary Busey Amber Alert (GBAA). Unreal stuff. If you’re a fan of Metal that combines an extreme rhythm section with hell inspired vocals and big melodic guitars then ALTERBEAST should sonically satisfy your Metal craving. The guitars of Rusty Cornell and Andrew Lamb on Immortal are both violent and dare I say, Neo-Classical? Regardless, I absolutely love listening to these two guitarists alone.
There is an abundance of musical substance on this album, from the lyrics to the blazing guitar solos, with the formidable rhythm section of bassist Michael Zamora and seasoned drummer Gabe Seeber holding it all together. Vocalist Cam Rogers is damn good and when I try to sing a verse along to this album it’s a total disaster. Extreme Metal singers are a breed of their own and Cam Rogers is a powerful vocalist to reckon with.
ALTERBEAST unleashed their first demo in 2012 and then officially began touring, doing numerous shows while opening for such Metal legends as Deicide, Dying Fetus, Testament, Revocation, Exhumed, Severed Savior and many others. When you open for a Metal crowd like that, it equates to Metal respect.
ALTERBEAST did create moments for the listener to catch their breath, during their sonic Death and destruction on Immortal; the sounds of (what I think are) geese can be heard as part of the outro to Mutilated Marvel. There is evil chanting that is the intro to Serpentspire. Excellent! Throne Of Maggots is the album closer and its outro is the sound of distant winds. Going backwards to the album opener, Flesh Bound Text begins with the peaceful sounds of an old 78rpm playing a strings and piano number… then ALL hell breaks loose. Love it. I look forward to great Metal things from ALTERBEAST. Metal be thy name. – Stone

GHOULGOTHA –TheDeathmass Cloak has been made available, on January 13th, via the Dark Descent website. This group was formed and is based in San Diego, California. GHOULGOTHA do strike the Death Metal hammer down, more than likely splitting speakers and skulls, across the lands, from their debut album. My Metal God almighty, is this album molasses heavy!
Overall, The Deathmass Cloak plays out as a Blackened Death Metal collides with calamitous Doom Metal listen. Heavy as King Kong’s monster-sized, congealed shit and fused with down tempo Death Metal are best to describe this album’s songs. GHOULGOTHA have won me over due their honing in on their own sound and by not following the leader within the Death Metal universe. There are hoards of riffs, that summons the same Metal Gods that have looked down upon Black Sabbath with appreciation and trust me, these guitar parts are CHUNKY.
I have found The Deathmass Cloak to be a rather diverse listen in Death Metal, where both Old Schoolers and newbies of the Modern era should both walk away feeling some deathly Metal fulfillment from GHOULGOTHA’s creativity. The all-encompassing Death Metal vibe on this album is just an overall treat for my senses; GHOULGOTHA has a downbeat aura to their sound that just locks me in, man.
The sonic surprises of both the album’s intro of Solar Awakening and closer, Levitate Within The Curse, are stuff of genius for a Death Metal band; very impressive musical ideas were obviously fulfilled there. I’ll leave that last thought as something you’ll have to hear for yourself, it’s too good to give away. Metal be thy name. – Stone
The Deathmass Cloak, the debut full-length from San Diego-based death metal band GHOULGOTHA, is out now on Dark Descent Records. Stream the album in its entirety at this location.
After a demo, EP and a split, GHOULGOTHA emphatically announces their presence in the metal realm with the 53-minute The Deathmass Cloak. The album is the product of the very warped and prolific W. Sarantopoulos (AKA Elektrokutioner), so expect some of the most outside the box brutality the underground has to offer. Produced by Damian Herring (HORRENDOUS) at Subterranean Watchtower Studio, The Deathmass Cloak is a weird and winding death metal album destined to satisfy even the harshest critics. Cover art for the album comes courtesy of Mattias Frisk (Vanhelgd).

W. Sarantopoulos (DECREPITAPH, FATHER BEFOULED, ENCOFFINATION, WOODEN STAKE, FESTERED, SCAREMAKER and more) moved from Dallas to San Diego and began searching for musicians to bring some Doom/Death to Southern California. Shortly after moving, he hooked up with drummer C. Koryn (ASCENDED DEAD) who shared a lot of the same influences. Their playing styles worked perfectly with each other, making the song writing process very easy. The two jammed for a few months while looking for other members to complete the line up.
The band name GHOULGOTHA was chosen as it represents our dedication to rotting old skull Doom/Death. In the summer of 2012, J. Moreno (ASCENDED DEAD) and I. Mann were added on bass/vocals and second guitar, respectively. The full horde quickly put together a two song demo/promo called No Peace To Rest In and released it in September 2012.

ABOUT ARA:
ARA is a Progressive/Technical Death Metal band, featuring members of the bands Northless and Concentric. ARA began in early 2012 as a culmination of the desires of Jerry Hauppa and Erik Stenglein to play in a Death Metal project that borrowed from their influences, without being mere carbon copies. Both Jerry and Erik have/had played in multiple Milwaukee area bands throughout the last 12 years, enjoying performing and creating various styles of music, but they had never realized their goal of creating stark, dissonant, yet strangely melodic brutality, until deciding to try to play some Death Metal riffs together, one day in their practice space.
This jam led to full songs and of course, the inception of ARA. Soon after, Jerry recruited longtime musical collaborator James Becker (Concentric, ex-Forever Is Forgotten) and Adam Bujny (ex-Gaspar Minga) on bass and vocals, respectively, and they filled out the sound in a way that led to the formation of material found on The Blessed Sleep. And that was just the beginning. New album Devourer of Worlds is ARA’s declaration of war!
Unique Leader Records is very pleased to announce the re-signing of long-running brutal Death Metal behemoths, INTERNAL SUFFERING.
Comments the band in a collective statement: “We are stoked to announce that we have resigned with Unique Leader! We are all very proud to be again a part of a label that has released some of the finest extreme death metal albums in history from bands such as Deeds Of Flesh, Decrepit Birth, Disgorge, Pyrexia, Internal Bleeding, Disavowed, Hour Of Penance, Aeon, Beheaded, Psycroptic and Spawn Of Possession, just to name a few. This is the beginning of a new chapter for us. We would like to thank Erik Lindmark and all the staff at Unique Leader for welcoming us back into their incredible roster. Few other labels can touch their legacy when it comes to high quality brutal death metal. We’ll be starting the recording sessions this Winter. We look forward to previously undreamed-of levels of brutality, speed and intensity with this new record. Stay tuned for more details!”
Spawned in 1996, INTERNAL SUFFERING recently relocated from their home base in Pereira, Columbia to Madrid, Spain. Notorious for their apocalyptic brand of brutal, blasting, technically proficient death metal, the band’s bestial discography includes four full-lengths: 2000’s Supreme Knowledge Domain (Repulse Records), 2002’s Chaotic Matrix (Displeased Records), 2004’s Choronzonic Force Domination (Displeased Records) and 2006’s Awakening of the Rebel (Unique Leader Records), the last two of which featured the production prowess of extreme metal sound-wizard Erik Rutan (Hate Eternal/ex-Morbid Angel).
A maniacal work ethic and thirst to spread their audio peril globally has allowed INTERNAL SUFFERING the opportunity to ransack stages throughout the US, Europe and Asia along the iconic likes of Cannibal Corpse, Sodom, Incantation, Exodus and Origin, among many more. The band has also graced the bills of some of the most important extreme metal festivals in the world including the Maryland Deathfest, Extreme Fest, Neurotic Death Fest, Barroselas Metal Fest, Tokyo Death Fest, Bangkok Deathfest, Fuck The Commerce Fest, Obscene Extreme Festival and Kaltenbach Open Air Fest as well as an appearance last year at the massive Rock At The Park. Among the most populated open air fests in Latin America, Rock At The Park draws over 100,000 headbangers annually!
INTERNAL SUFFERING will release their long-awaited fifth studio album via Unique Leader Records in 2015. Details to be unveiled in due time.
American Technical Death Metal duo APOCROPHEX are pleased to release The Grey, the first single from their highly anticipated début full length Suspended From the Cosmic Altaar.
The Grey is the opening track from the upcoming album, set to be released 3/10/15 on CD and digital via NJ-based Manicidic Records.
The band released the following statement about the song:
“We chose “The Grey” as first contact because it fully represents our evolution and progression from the Wheels Within Wheels EP so well. Fans that have only heard those 2 short tracks are in for an eye opener with this album, due to its massive leap forward in song structure, overall technicality and sheer power. Lyrically, the song presents the listener with the ever unsettling and horrific threat of being limited in option, to feeling and experiencing only constant fear, or ultimately nothing at all...”

LIVE BURIAL – The self-titled EP from Live Burial has made me proclaim it as: over 22 minutes of savage and doom ridden Death Metal, that can easily rip and tear your Metal soul apart. This is some of the most enjoyable Metal I’ve listened to in 2014; Live Burial is Death Metal with hefty doom influence that’s 100% underground and the real deal. Originating from Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK, this is a Death Metal band I’m more than elated to welcome across the Atlantic.
Jamie Brown offers up some disgustingly violent vocals and growls and the entire band plays some solid Death Metal, across 4 scathing songs, to my ears. Excellent! Live Burial prove they can play at eye-popping breakneck speed or slow it down to an evil Doom death march for the gathering of innocent mortal’s souls. The guitars without a doubt have some Tony Iommi influence snuck in there, with the rhythm section playing at a constant resounding capacity. Live Burial is an EP I won’t be forgetting about for quite some time, both nefarious and old school. Metal be thy name. – Stone

HORRIFIED – The world of Death Metal is a much more potent and kick-ass place to roam, especially when bands like the UK’s Horrified release such a blistering excellent album such as Descent Into Putridity. Old School Death Metal is celebrated on this album of seven blood soaked songs; seven songs of pummeling and relentless sonic assaults to my cranium!
There’s something about Death Metal that makes me feel like all is okay, just like a security blanket is to a tot. Trust me, my Metal brethren, when I say all is okay with this Horrified album! These songs suck me in, like a Death Metal vacuum to the outer-banks of Hell itself and I refuse to resist! Whoa! I have no problem letting the deathly grooves and insane speed of Horrified’s Death Metal engulf me, man it feels so right! Dan Alderson’s guttural vocal sounds are what gives this album that much more of a rabid and infectious bite!
Descent Into Putridity was released on October 21st, via cult Spanish label Memento Mori Records. It is amazing for me to realize that this is the debut album from Horrified; for this band plays as if they’ve been brutally assaulting eardrums togetherfor a decade or more! For me to pick a favorite song on this album is ridiculous; it’s the entire seven song merciless sonic surge, that has made my Metal week so grand! Metal be thy name – Stone.
