MAGIC CIRCLE – Boston Heavy Metal Outfit To Release Third LP, “Departed Souls” Via 20 Buck Spin In March; Video For Title Track Now Playing

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, music news, news, rock music, world news with tags , , , , , , on January 31, 2019 by Metal Odyssey

Boston’s MAGIC CIRCLE returns with their triumphant third LP, Departed Souls. Ending a four-year gap since the band’s acclaimed Journey Blind LP, Departed Souls will see release through 20 Buck Spin. Ahead of its March 29th street date, the label has released a video created for advance single, the album’s opening song and title track, “Departed Souls.”

MAGIC CIRCLE‘s self-titled debut hit the true doom scene like a revelation in 2013. Without hype or hyperbole, the band effortlessly invoked fundamental rock and roll truths putting their own stamp on early heavy metal darkness. Joining 20 Buck Spin for follow-up Journey Blind, the bandagain offered that unmistakable classic sound with natural unforced evolution. On their third LP, Departed Souls, MAGIC CIRCLE presents an expansive hard rock vision, adorning their signature doom with seamless psych and prog ornamentation.

Departed Souls finds MAGIC CIRCLE delving more deeply into ’70s sounds, expanding farther outward from the primordial Iommic matter of their birth. Heavy Sabbathian riffs abound, but MAGIC CIRCLE opens up, stretches out, exposing different shades that recall the moody peaks and valleys of the classic hard rock LPs of that era. Acoustic twelve-string, tablas, and Fender Rhodes appear in lush moments of kaleidoscopic decadence woven into the fabric of the pounding elemental thunder. All the while, vocalist Brendan Radigan seals the deal as one of the premier heavy metal singers of the 21st century, delivering that Wagnerian dynamism and vigor that screams from the heavens and becomes thoroughly controlled in moments of quiet solemnity. The album was recorded and engineered by Will Killingsworth at Dead Air Studios, mixed by the band’s Chris Corry, and mastered by Andy Pearce and Matt Wortham (Black Sabbath, Angel Witch, Saxon, Rory Gallagher).

Though all members are busy with other projects including Innumerable Forms, Sumerlands, Devil’s Dare, Stone Dagger, Lifeless Dark, Missionary Work, Pagan Altar live, and more, when these five men come together in the MAGIC CIRCLE, the chemistry and palpable rock exhilaration reminds us that this band isn’t one destined to die with the herd.

MAGIC CIRCLE has created a video for the LP’s opening song and title track “Departed Souls,” compiling live footage of the band with ritualistic, religious, and spiritual practices.

See MAGIC CIRCLE’s “Departed Souls” video RIGHT HERE and stream the track at all major digital providers including Bandcamp HERE.

20 Buck Spin will issue Departed Souls on LP, CD, cassette, and all digital platforms March 29th. Watch for preorders to be posted in the days ahead. If you regularly spin Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Trouble, Led Zeppelin, Rainbow, Pagan Altar, Witchfinder General, early Soundgarden, Judas Priest, Witchcraft, and Saint Vitus, become a part of the MAGIC CIRCLE.

The band will play select festivals and shows throughout 2019, with a performance at Hell Over Hammaburg in Germany on March 1st confirmed. Watch for more information to be released in the weeks ahead.

Long running Minnesota Death/Doom band COLD COLOURS celebrate their 20th anniversary in 2019 with the February 22 release of fifth full-length album Northernmost. In recognition of the winter solstice, the album’s first blast of freezing wind comes in the form of a lyric video for new track “Terminal Winter.”

Vocalist/guitarist Brian J. Huebner had this to say about the band’s milestone:

“If 20 years has taught me anything, it’s that you have to believe in what you are doing. No matter how many roadblocks you hit over two decades. I am thrilled that we have ‘Northernmost’ to celebrate 20 years. Our best album so far? Without question, but more importantly, the best representation of who we are and should be. This album is a testament to the chemistry of the band in 2019.”

Long overdue, Northernmost finds COLD COLOURS in top form as they mine the depths of despair on 12 dynamic compositions guaranteed to satisfy devotees, as well as newcomers with a taste for the likes of AMORPHIS, SWALLOW THE SUN, and INSOMNIUM. Recorded and mixed by drummer Mike Andrie, and mastered to perfection by the legendary Dan Swanö at Sweden’s Unisound, Northernmost is nothing short of exquisite. Welcome to 2019; welcome to your Doom!

Track Listing:

  1. Northernmost I

WHILE HEAVEN WEPT – ‘Vast Oceans Lachrymose’ Lineup To Embark On ‘Farewell’ European Dates

Posted in doom metal, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, music news, news, rock music, world news with tags , , , , on October 25, 2018 by Metal Odyssey

In early 2015, WHILE HEAVEN WEPT main man Tom Phillips had to regrettably pull the plug on the band’s European tour in support of their latest studio album, “Suspended At Aphelion”. The decision led to Phillips’ unexpected retirement from the metal scene, effectively putting the revered doomsters on ice. However, Phillips and his band mates have long sought to make amends to the European crowds who have so strongly backed WHILE HEAVEN WEPT over the years. Now, as 2018 draws to a close, the most recent incarnation of WHILE HEAVEN WEPT that started with 2009’s classic “Vast Oceans Lachrymose” will play its final shows together on a run of European dates that begins November 16 at Germany’s Hammer Of Doom Festival.

“I agreed to do these shows to give everyone else – the band members, our fans, even myself some closure, especially since the last tour was cancelled,” says Phillips. “The other aspect is the circumstances and priorities of the musicians involved are simply not aligned with what an actively touring band requires anymore.”

The “Vast Oceans Lachrymose” lineup – rounded out by bassist Jim Hunter, vocalist Rain Irving, second guitarist Scott Loose, keyboardist/harmony vocalist Michelle Schrotz and drummer Trevor Schrotz – have been holed up in a Virginia rehearsal room putting together a setlist that is not only representative of the latest era of WHILE HEAVEN WEPT, but the band’s storied past as well. According to Phillips, some of WHILE HEAVEN WEPT‘s most memorable shows have taken place on European shores, including their 2010 appearance at Hammer Of Doom alongside Irish metallers PRIMORDIAL, which was not only Irving’s third show with the band, but also where the “Triumph: Tragedy: Transcendence” DVD/live album was recorded.

“We’ve always had a great time sharing the stage with PRIMORDIAL,” he says. “I think we’ve played with them more than anyone else in our history – and that’s always been such a great insight into the scope of melancholia and epos. Of course, we’ve also had the great honor of playing with heroes, family and upcoming bands who have gone on to become some of the biggest names out there like ALCEST and GHOST. Most of all though, it’s connecting directly with the people who really care about what we do and again, that’s what these upcoming shows are really about.”

The shows will offer another treat for fans – a limited-edition shirt commemorating the 30th anniversary of the band. “It’s an exclusive design by Gustavo Sazes, who has done the covers for our last couple of albums,” says Phillips. “There’s quite a few layers to the design and it definitely correlates to ‘Fear Of Infinity’ and ‘Suspended At Aphelion’. Personally, I think it turned out amazing and while it does represent our 30th anniversary, for now, it will be available exclusively at the concerts.” `

While these European dates signal the end for the “Vast Oceans Lachrymose” era of WHILE HEAVEN WEPT, it does not mean the end for the band. Phillips says there is an entire album of unfinished material that sits between “Fear Of Infinity” and “Suspended At Aphelion” in which he may look to finalize at some point.

“In the end, I’d started on a solo project prior to being involved with the WALPYRGUS album [2017’s ‘Walpyrgus Nights’], but with the WHILE HEAVEN WEPT shows coming up, I haven’t even looked at that again. But for WHILE HEAVEN WEPT, as long as I’m breathing, WHILE HEAVEN WEPT exists, even if the lineup changes for the nth time or we are strictly DIY on a small, independent scale. Only time will tell. For now, it’s time to commemorate a milestone and the end of an era!”

WHILE HEAVEN WEPT 2018 European tour dates:

November 16/17 – Hammer Of Doom, Würzburg, Germany

November 18 – Temple, Athens, Greece

November 24/25 – Dutch Doom Days, Baroeg, Rotterdam, Netherlands

December 7 – Under The Doom VI, Sala But, Madrid, Spain

December 8 – Madrid Is The Dark, Madrid, Spain

NEW RELEASE IS THE FIRST TO FEATURE SINGER KAYLA DIXON; LISTEN TO “BURN YOU DOWN” HERE

_____________________________

Portland, Ore., March 12, 2018 – Witch Mountain return from their three-plus-year hiatus with a refreshed line-up (new singer Kayla Dixon and bass player Justin Brown join band stalwarts Rob Wong and Nate Carson) and a new album: Witch Mountain (May 25, Svart Records).

“We’ve always been a patient band,” said founding member/drummer Nathan Carson. “Thanks to all of the touring Rob and I have done with Justin and Kayla over the last three years, we were able to make this album as a full-fledged, road-tested, family unit. Over twenty years, Witch Mountain has never peaked; each record and tour are better than the last. It was a tiny scene when we started, and even though it’s incredibly saturated now, own unique twist on Northwestern doom has continued to set us apart. I can’t wait to share the latest and greatest album with our fans.”

The five-song release features the aforementioned new singer, Kayla Dixon, who had large shoes to fill when Uta Plotkin announced she was moving on following the release of Mobile of Angels. NPR said of Dixon’s abilities: “Kayla Dixon is a rarity in doom-metal, a singer with soul, dynamism, drama, control and poise. There’s proficiency in her voice, but she knows that the blues — especially heavy-metal blues — rolls like thunder and wanders like a diva dancing around. She’s got a gift for righteously nailing the perfect note.”

Psychedelic Stoner Doom collective GREEN DRUID will release their debut full-length Ashen Blood via Earache Records this March. Brooding, atmospheric, and isolationist with weighty riffs summoning the Lovecraftian horrors of the cosmos, GREEN DRUID‘s music entrances listeners with tales of the Old Blood and of dismal worlds too soon forgotten.

Hailing from the land of Denver, Colorado – the first US city to legalize marijuana – GREEN DRUID worships at the feet of the monolithic amplifier, and performs holy communion with the tremorous onslaught of murky tones that emanate from its maw.

“While our first EP and foray into the world of doom could be viewed as us learning the ins-and-outs of the genre, Ashen Blood is where we really started to hone in on our own voice,” issues the band. “Taking influence from the dark fantasy landscapes of games like Dark Souls and Bloodborne, we strove to create a truly doomed psychedelic experience.” Fans of Sleep, Electric Wizard, Sunn O))), Thou, Khemmis, The Sword, and Bongripper pay heed.

Ashen Blood will descend upon the ears of the worthy on March 16th on CD, LP, and digital formats. For preorder bundles, go to THIS LOCATION.

DRIFT INTO BLACK – Atmospheric/Experimental Gloom Metal Project Featuring Former Member Of Grey Skies Fallen Releases “Shadow People” EP; Full Stream Available

Posted in Heavy Metal, metal music, news, rock music, world news with tags , , , , , on December 30, 2017 by Metal Odyssey

Drift Into Black - Shadow People EP - promo cover pic - 2017

For close to twenty years, Craig Rossi has handled keyboard duties for the Doom Metal band Grey Skies Fallen, recording four albums, two EPs, and two singles with the group. He’s performed numerous shows across the US sharing the same stage with the likes of Opeth, Anathema, Arch Enemy, Amorphis, and Katatonia. He’s since embarked on a new musical journey with atmospheric/experimental gloom metal project DRIFT INTO BLACK and his recently-issued Shadow People EP.

Boasting five depressive tracks, the eclectic sounds comprising Shadow People draw inspiration from a vast array of genres including dark rock, atmospheric, and Doom Metal. Rossi has taken on the task of vocals, guitars, keyboards, mixing, and mastering, along with the help of a hired session drummer. Notes Rossi, “I wanted the production on this EP to sound pale with less crisp than most records; a gloomy sound stage due to the fact that the lyrical content deals with dark human elements. If Anathema, Tiamat, Black Sabbath, and Katatonia all had a love child, DRIFT INTO BLACK would be it.”

BELDAM – To Release New Studio Album “PASUNG” On January 26th

Posted in Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, news, rock music with tags , , , , on December 24, 2017 by Metal Odyssey

BELDAM - PASUNG - promo cover pic - 2018 - #333MO9ILMN

Seattle (WA) – Horror Pain Gore Death Productions are set to release Pasung, the sophomore album from Doom/Sludge titans BELDAM, January 26 on CD and Digital formats.  New song “Vial of Silence” is streaming at youtu.be/emm4kEbWsVM or below:

Pasung is BELDAM‘s second release on Horror Pain Gore Death Productions and their first with new vocalist/lyricist Randall Guidry. The band recently relocated to Seattle, continuing their vision to play skull-crushing, soul-wrenching, paint-peeling Sludge with blackened touches. With influences ranging from Sleep, EyeHateGod, Graves At Sea, The Melvins and Black Sabbath, BELDAM combines a massive wall of guitars, thickened bass tones, bone-rattling drums and harsh vocals featuring lyrics building on the themes of death and despair. Pasung clocks in at 50 minutes of pure, unadulterated American Sludge.

Pasung was recorded at The Bomb Shelter in Nashville, TN, April 5-7, with additional tracking on August 31 and September 1, 2017. The album was engineered and mastered by Drew Carroll who recorded BELDAM‘s original 5-song demo in 2015. All guitars and bass on the recording were performed by Grahm Reynolds with the exception of “One from the Stable.” Cullen Wade handled the drums on the entire record. Pasung represents the truest BELDAM. The band focused a significant amount of time on songwriting and pre-production to get the heaviest tones and thickest riffs possible. After parting ways with their original bassist and relocating to Seattle, BELDAM is psyched to release Pasung to the masses and play as many shows as possible in its new Pacific Northwest home.

Track Listing:

  1. Vial Of Silence
  2. Sunken Sorceress
  3. Shed The Coil
  4. One From The Stable
  5. Carrion Feast
  6. That Which Consumes You

GATEWAY TO HELL – Baltimore Doom Metal Unit To Release Debut EP Via Unholy Anarchy Records; New Track Streaming

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, music news, news, rock music, world news with tags , , , , on July 3, 2017 by Metal Odyssey

“…a groovy, ghoulish mix of doom metal and the laughter of ugly children, with a touch of inebriation and shame…”

______________________________

Baltimore Doom Metal unit GATEWAY TO HELL – fittingly self-described as a, “groovy, ghoulish mix of doom metal and the laughter of ugly children, with a touch of inebriation and shame – will release their debut EP next month via Unholy Anarchy Records.

Slated to drop on July 21st, the five bottom-heavy ragers comprising Clovers were captured at Developing Nations with Kevin Bernsten on their home turf and douses its listeners with heavy riffs, an exceptional vocal attack, and sheer, unrepentant catchiness. The Maryland four-piece conjure loud music about things that matter. Whether it’s a slow burning, existential lament or a fast-paced scorcher about regrettable, late-night, drunken food orgies, GATEWAY TO HELL draws influences from all over the musical spectrum including Deep Purple, Danzig and of course, Black Sabbath.

Clovers will come available digitally and on limited edition vinyl in three color variations (orange/pink merge, clear with blue splatter, and standard black). Preorders are currently available RIGHT HERE.

Check out the title track at the GATEWAY TO HELL Bandcamp page at THIS LOCATION or below:

Clovers – Track Listing:

  1. Clovers
  2. Tin Roof
  3. The Drizzard
  4. Rain For Days
  5. Scorched Earth

GATEWAY TO HELL was forged in 2013 when drummer Dan Petruccelli and bassist Rudy Gomez started jamming in the basement of an otherwise reputable Baltimore cake shop. Taking cues from John Carpenter soundtracks, Type O Negative, and Ministry, they realized they were onto something fun and brought in Jerrod Bronson on vocals and Jo K. on guitar to complete the initial lineup. The band released a self-recorded demo in October of 2014 and shows with the likes of The Skull and Crypt Sermon ensued.

By 2015, Gomez moved to Austin, Texas but remains an integral part of the band as the painter responsible for much of the band’s artwork. Eric Smythe was brought in on bass and later Alex Briscoe joined as a second guitarist. Together, they played shows regionally opening for Valient Thorr, The Bronx, Mac Sabbath, and Mondo Generator. In the spring of 2016, they recorded the soon-to-be-unleashed Clovers EP featuring five songs of atmospheric and crushing Metal that fuses their many Metal and punk influences. Later that year, Jo K. fled the band to pursue new projects. The band remains a four-piece. GATEWAY TO HELL‘s catalog includes a self-titled demo, one single titled “Scorched Earth” and their upcoming 2017 debut EP Clovers. The band is currently writing new material for their next album.

Texas Doom Duo CANYON OF THE SKULL Releasing ‘The Desert Winter’ August 19th

Posted in doom metal, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, news, rock music, world news with tags , , , , on June 24, 2017 by Metal Odyssey

Austin (TX) –  CANYON OF THE SKULL has returned! The instrumental Doom duo of guitarist Erik Ogershok and Adrian Voorhies (Humut Tabal) will release sophomore album The Desert Winter on August 19. The CD version will be available in a gorgeous 6-panel format.

Consisting of the undeniably epic 37-minute title track of blackened doom, The Desert Winter is a journey deep into the psyche. Listeners are strongly advised to clear out all head space (and any earwax) and settle in for this existential Ride of the Doomed!

Recorded at WoodenHorse studios October 2016.

Mixed and Produced by Zawicizuz and Canyon of the Skull.

Mastered by Proscriptor McGovern (Russ R. Givens) at Nox Luna Inlustris Music.

Artwork Layout and design by Erik Bredthauer.

Adrian Voorhies – Drums, Percussion

Erik Ogershok – Guitars, Bass, Percussion

BAND BIO:

The brainchild of Erik Ogershok, COTS was initially manifested in the winter of 2006. Several local appearances and lineup fluctuations later, life happened, and the project lay dormant. 2014 saw the return of Ogershok as he recruited new musical personnel in the form of drummer Adrian Voorhies of the Austin-based Black Metal outfit HUMUT TABAL and once more brought the doom ensemble to life to melt the faces of all who sought shade in the Canyon walls.

After numerous regional gigs both opening for touring colleagues and spearheading an array of craft beer events and festival slots (including two SXSW appearances), the band closed the year with a blistering performance at the End of the World Fest in Houston alongside Austin brethren The Sword and Eagle Claw. 2015 saw the creation of the band’s first recording, a self-titled EP solidifying the now scaled down duo of Ogershok and Voorhies as a force to be reckoned with in the Texas doom scene.

With the EP capturing some attention, they embarked on a two-week tour of the Midwest, bringing their signature brand of instrumental doom from the Twin Cities to Louisville. Once home, the band commenced production on their most ambitious musical effort yet with rare selected live performances across the lone star state. In October, they headed back into Wooden Horse studios with an A-list production team of Zawicizuz (The Black Moriah) and Proscriptor McGovern (Absu) and their sophomore offering was forged. Now, as the band prepares to release The Desert Winter, only one message can truly be counted on: Abandon All Hope.

GREEN LUNG – Debut Single “Green Man Rising” – A Metal Odyssey Review

Green Lung - promo band pic - 2017 - #33MO838ILMNOSD

GREEN LUNG – From the UK emerges a Doom Metal band of seasoned musicians named GREEN LUNG. These dudes have just released their debut single, Green Man Rising, on June 1st. This groovy, doomy, psychedelic (intertwined) with stoner goodness song is available on the bands’ bandcamp site, (see below). Clean vocals and a beefy executed song; even the B side song is worth the price for the doom voyage.

I dig the sound that GREEN LUNG have captured; this band has created respectable chunky riffage and relevant doom atmosphere that also grasps and holds onto some Sabbath-like vibes. Keep on plowing down the doom soaked freeway GREEN LUNG, considering I am eager to hear a whole lot more doom from you. Metal Be Thy Name. – Stone

Side B: Freak On A Peak

GREEN LUNG Bio:

Formed in March 2017, GREEN LUNG play heavy psychedelia that is more attuned to wild woodlands than desert dunes. Made up of current and former members of stoner heavies Oak, occult doom trio Tomb King and instrumental sludge minimalists Deadbox Radio, the London-based four-piece have combined strengths to record an opening salvo that balances gargantuan heaviness with intricate melody.

The track showcases KINGS DESTROY‘s myriad influences, combining elements of doom, sludge, psych, rock, and metal into one sprawling, dynamic composition. It’s spaced-out, fuzzed-out, maxed-out, rock ‘n’ roll doom.

Notes The Obelisk in an extended investigation of the record: “None More moves through its extended but brief stretch, flowing not like a disjointed assemblage of parts, but with a careful and patiently executed arc. It’s not the first time KINGS DESTROY have told a story in their work, but it’s the first time they’ve put so much into the telling.”

Finnish Death/Doom overlords KRYPTS are set to return with their second full-length, Remnants of Expansion. Dark Descent Records will release the album October 28th on CD, vinyl, cassette and digital formats. Pre-orders begin on September 22nd.

Three years may have passed since Unending Degradation, but KRYPTS have lost none of their excruciating power that made their debut album such a special one, erecting a bridge in between their homeland glorious and down-tuned early 90’s glory and something even more sinister and doom-laden.

And the arrival in 2015 of Jukka Aho from GOREPHILIA on second guitar has done nothing to alter that rare chemistry, on the contrary…

Just like its predecessor, Remnants of Expansion reeks of that ancient feeling but dives even deeper into the abyss. Clocking altogether at 33 minutes, there’s something very majestic and solemn about its five songs.

krypts-promo-band-pic-2016-33ilmf099mo933

Like a serpent circling its prey, the Finns like to play shadow and it’s never truer than on the album’s opener, the monstrous 10 minute “Arrow of Entropy.” But its follow-up, “The Withering Titan,” for instance starts off with Mongol throat chanting, two minutes later the listener is buried under a deluge of blast beats, only to let the instrumental title-track drown you in the cold and bottomless waters of funeral doom.

Once again adorned with Timo Ketola cryptic artwork, Remnants of Expansion is like a big haunted house at a top of a dead trees infested hill on the outskirts of town by a moonless night. Grand in scope, seemingly devoid of any human touch and yet towering over us like a malevolent entity. Behold. – written by Olivier Zoltar Badin

“Entrailed to the Breaking Wheel” is streaming now on Dark Descent Record’s BandCamp page:

Destroyer Of Light - West Coast Tour - 2016 - promo flyer - #MO99ILMFOT333

Austin doom-crushers, DESTROYER OF LIGHT, have updated their Summer tour, which begins in just one week, then consumes the remainder of June and nearly half of July.

The upcoming tour is the first extensive tour from DESTROYER OF LIGHT since their Summer 2015 tour with Godhunter, which was booked in support of their Endsville split 2xLP. This new trek sees DESTROYER OF LIGHT taking their Endsville anthems back out to the masses, beginning in Fort Worth on June 16th, then running up through the Central and Midwestern states to the Pacific Northwest, before running down the West Coast on their way back to Texas, the final show going down in the band’s hometown on July 11th.

A brief trailer for the tour is posted HERE or below:

Additionally, DESTROYER OF LIGHT has been confirmed to take part in the second installment of Shadow Woods Metal Fest in Maryland this September, with the likes of Zud, Tombs, Mantar, Wino with Faith In Jane, Ghost Bath, Darsombra, Blood Storm, and countless others, around which another tour is being routed.

Following the recent departure of Keegan Kjeldsen, these tour dates will see DESTROYER OF LIGHT taking to the streets as a three-piece for the first time, with Jeff Klein handling lead guitars, Steve Colca on guitars and vocals, and Penny turner on drums, the trio strategically bulking up on extra amplification for the journey. The band is working on their new album, which will see release in early 2017 on a label to be announced at a later date along with more info on the permanent lineup.

Stream DESTROYER OF LIGHT’s Endsville split with Godhunter RIGHT HERE and see the lyric video for “Electric Shadows” HERE or below:

Endsville is available through a joint release with Godhunter co-owned Battleground Records and DESTROYER OF LIGHT‘s Heavy Friends Records, the 2xLP bearing two slabs of 180-gram vinyl on two colors packed in a gatefold sleeve. Order the digital and vinyl HERE.

KING DEAD: Psychedelic Bass And Drum Trio Confirms New Live Dates; Vinyl Edition Of “Woe & Judgement” Now Available

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, metal music, Music, news, rock music with tags , , , on June 7, 2016 by Metal Odyssey

King Dead - live promo photo - 2016 - #MOILMNFS99456

Pennsylvania mostly instrumentalists, KING DEAD, will bring their spacious, tripped out, post-metal/doom manifestations to the stage on a smattering of live performances this Summer. The band’s latest excursions include an in-store appearance this weekend at Darkside Records in Poughkeepsie, New York with Geezer and Linear North.

Comments drummer Steve Truglio of the upcoming dates, “It’s really getting fun now. Not only are we enjoying the hell out of playing the new Woe & Judgment stuff, but we just started test driving an even newer song in the set. We are playing cool places with great bands and things are really starting to click.”

KING DEAD undraped their three-song full-length, Woe & Judgement, earlier this year. Having impressed with the spacious post-metal textures of their 2014 demo, the scope of Woe & Judgement has expanded considerably even from where it started. With three tracks constructed to fit on two sides, KING DEAD – Truglio with four-string bassist Kevin Vanderhoof, and six-string bassist Wil McGrath – pushes its way into an encompassing rumble that still seems to hold onto a human core even as it lumbers between airy doom and rawer, thoroughly reverbed noise.

King Dead - Woe & Judgement - promo album cover pic - 2016 - #MO990099ILMFSO

“It’s an immersive, thirty-seven-minute stretch,” proclaims The Obelisk, “but lack of pretense prevails, and KING DEAD‘s debut long-player finds them aesthetically locked in and proffering a balance between the raw and the lush, with a patience underlying that only makes the songs seem more methodical.”

Woe & Judgement is currently available on limited edition vinyl and can be streamed at THIS LOCATION.

KING DEAD have been conspicuously haunting the Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania area. Bass players Wil McGrath and Kevin Vanderhoof, recruited New Jersey transplant Steve Truglio on drums in 2013, and have been traumatizing ears throughout Pennsylvania ever since. Their debut record Woe & Judgement was recorded by Dave Reiser in Stroudsburg at Rock Hard Studios. Call it sludge, doom, spaghetti western doom sludge… With virtually no vocals, it’s all about dynamics and the building tempos. Creepy, dreary, sleepy and melodic riffs layered over deep bottom and pounding drums.

SAMOTHRACE – Announce UK Spring Tour Dates

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, news, rock music with tags , , , , on February 21, 2016 by Metal Odyssey

Samothrace - promo band pic - 2016 - #MO99339

Seattle, Washington Doom band SAMOTHRACE are pleased to announce that they will be heading across the pond for a spring tour of the United Kingdom! The tour will consist of 14 dates between 27th of April to 11th of May, and includes a date at the highly regarded Desertfest London.

Guitarist Brian Spinks had the following to say about the upcoming dates:

“We (Samothrace) are very pleased to announce we will be returning to the UK for a tour this upcoming Spring. In addition to our Saturday appearance at Desertfest London 2016, we will be traversing across England and Scotland with some additional shows afterwards possible on Western European soil. More info on them in the coming weeks. The few shows we played thru England in 2013 went by in a flash, far too quickly for our speed of life. We are really looking forward to spending more time touring the UK and possibly seeing more sights than just the back of our eyelids, the alley behind the venues and the truck stops for gas….”

SWALLOW THE SUN – To Release A Triple Album via Century Media Records

Posted in Metal, metal music, Music, rock music with tags , , , , on August 23, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Swallow The Sun - promo band photo - 2015 - #33MMMSSTO9394E

From Century Media Records:

The new Swallow the Sun release will be a triple album entitled Songs From The North I, II & III.

Main songwriter and guitarist Juha Raivio comments:
“Making a triple album in this godforsaken digital and modern-day and age…Many will say it’s madness. I say it is to bring worth, heart and respect back into the music and to the album format where it belongs. This should never turn into a shallow fast food industry where music is only downloaded one song at a time.

These albums hold life, death, gloom, beauty and despair in their deepest levels and forms. The three chapters are different but connected, one long journey through these songs written up here in the North.

Music is holy, albums are holy. See you on the other side, friends.”

EYE OF SOLITUDE And FAAL To Release Untitled Split EP

Posted in Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, news, rock music with tags , , , , on August 19, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Eye Of Solitude - Faal - split EP - promo cover pic - 2015 - #0000DDM

Two of Europe’s most promising next-gen Funeral Doom/Death Metal bands, EYE OF SOLITUDE and FAAL have joined forces for a split EP of epic proportions.

The untitled EP, which features a previously unreleased track from each band that will forever remain exclusive to this split, will be offered as a three-panel deluxe DigiSleeve CD and digital download. The CD version is strictly limited to 500 collectors-edition copies that includes a series of photos from French photographer Animalerrant.

EYE OF SOLITUDE‘s contribution, the aptly titled funeral march Obsequies, is the stylistic missing link between their future classic Canto III album (which was included on numerous ‘Best of 2013’ lists) and last year’s single-track, 50-minute monster Dear Insanity. This is Funeral Doom/Death at its finest!

FAAL‘s Shattered Hope sees the Netherlands-based unit blends elements of old-school Doom with contemporary Gothic/Dark metal for monstrous results.

The split is now streaming in full at both Zero Tolerance Magazine and MetalOrgie.com. Listen now at the links below:

Zero Tolerance (English)

MetalOrgie.com (French)

Kaotoxin Records will release this untitled split EP on September 18 and can be purchased alone or as part of the “EYE OF SOLITUDE CD pack,” which includes the Canto III and Sui Caedere albums, along with the Dear Insanity EP. Pre-orders are now available at www.kaotoxin.com.

TYRANNY – Finnish Funeral Doom Cult To Release First New Full-Length In A Decade Via Dark Descent Records Next Month; Artwork, Track Listing + Teaser Revealed

Posted in doom metal, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music with tags , , , , , on August 5, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Tyranny - Aeons In Tectonic Interment - promo album cover pic - 2015 - #33003399T

Finnish funeral doom duo, TYRANNY – featuring within its ranks current and former members of Corpsessed and Wormphlegm among others – will unleash their first new studio offering in a decade this Fall via Dark Descent Records. Titled Aeons In Tectonic Interment, the record offers up five diseased psalms of slow, tortured, epically bowel-rupturing grimness.

Composed, performed and tracked by members Matti Mäkelä and Lauri Lindqvist with additional percussion by Jussi-Pekka Manner and mastered by D. Lowndes at Resonance Sound Studio (Absu, Pallbearer, Profetus, Sigh, Wodensthrone etc.), Aeons In Tectonic Interment is at once spiritual and ill-omened; a fifty-one-minute soul-searing sound apocalypse where misanthropy, suffering and imminent ruin become one achieving purification through sonic decay.

Aeons In Tectonic Interment Track Listing:
1. Sunless Deluge
2. A Voice Given Unto Ruin
3. Preparation Of A Vessel
4. The Stygian Enclave
5. Bells Of The Black Basilica

____________________________

Forged in 2001 by Mäkelä and Lindqvist, TYRANNY was conceived under the strain of a Stranger Will to channel the Ageless resonations of Earth and Oceans and sonorous visions and fevered dreams by the means of epic, Funereal Soundscapes. In 2004 the band unsheathed their debut, Bleak Vistae, which shook the foundation of a small, reclusive yet inexorably devoted funeral doom scene.

Crowned an, “epic masterpiece,” and commended for its, “mystical atmosphere,” and, “crushing wall of sound,” by Ultimate Guitar, 2005’s Tides Of Awakening reaped the attention of critics globally. Metal Bite championed a record that was, “uncompromising and extreme,” while Metal Reviews, in an “Album Of the Month” review likened it to, “a partner piece instructing in the discipline of appreciating one’s own suffering.”

TYRANNY has always operated in the shadows, worked on intuition and done things only when there was a will and the time seemed right for it. The past ten years have been devoted to various live appearances such as Roskilde Festival, Roadburn and the Kill-Town Deathfest, and the slow writing process of Aeons In Tectonic Interment – the band’s most devout work to date.

Aeons In Tectonic Interment will see release via Dark Descent Records on CD, double LP and digitally on September 18th, 2015 with preorders and track samples to be revealed in the coming weeks.
