Rivers Of Nihil was created in a very “rock n’ roll” manner. “On 2021’s The Work, I wrote a lot of the record on the piano and then the band filled in the gaps,” explains guitarist Brody Uttley. “On this new record, I wanted to make sure that this stuff would hit hard live with just the four of us before adding in all of the sparkly auxiliary ‘frosting’ on top.”
Rivers Of Nihil also showcases additional musicians, including Patrick Corona on alto saxophone, Stephan Lopez on banjo, McFarland on cello, and a slate of other guest vocalists. Despite the fresh approach on Rivers Of Nihil, however, the album still fits neatly into the band’s discography.

Progressive death metal progenitors RIVERS OF NIHIL will release their eponymous fifth full-length on May 30th via Metal Blade Records.
Sixteen years and five albums into the Pennsylvania band’s career, RIVERS OF NIHIL is upping the ante with Rivers Of Nihil. Traditionally, a self-titled record can signal a return to basics and/or a fresh beginning, and in ten powerful songs, it’s clear that both those factors are in play. Founding bassist Adam Biggs became the band’s new lead vocalist/bassist in 2023; the same year marked the appearance of additional guitarist Andy Thomas (ex-Black Crown Initiate), whose vocals also play prominently on Rivers Of Nihil. Producers Carson Slovak and Grant McFarland at Atrium Audio captured the new dynamics across more than fifty minutes of music.
“I feel like these songs are the perfect blend of all our albums, with all the fat cut away,” says founding guitarist Brody Uttley. “There are more technical songs that call back to The Conscious Seed Of Light and Monarchy sound, but with a more mature understanding of how to pace a song. There’s a fair bit of the Where Owls Know My Name and The Work-type experimental stuff, but with a more refreshed perspective on those styles for the current era of the band.”
On June 15th, 2023, the band released a new single, “The Sub-Orbital Blues,” the first track with Biggs handling lead vocals following the 2022 departure of singer Jake Dieffenbach. It was also the first track to feature Thomas. A second single, “Hellbirds,” dropped on October 19th of that year. On April 29th, 2024, the band released the cut “Criminals” and an accompanying music video. Both “Criminals” and “The Sub-Orbital Blues” appear on Rivers Of Nihil.
The new album’s first single of 2025, “House Of Light,” is a track that “encapsulates the nature of what it is that we do perfectly while offering a different perspective on the sound with the new lineup,” explains founding member/guitarist Brody Uttley, who also plays piano and does the programming in the band. “Everything that our fans have come to love about our sound is demonstrated in this song with the new addition of Andy singing and Biggs on main vocals. It has the riffs, it has the big chorus, it has the prog, it has the solos, it has the sax. Just a real classic example of what we do as a band in 2025.”

RIVERS OF NIHIL will kick off their North American tour supporting Dying Fetus and Thy Art Is Murder, with additional support from Enterprise Earth and Sanction this week. The tour begins on March 15th in Poughkeepsie, New York and will make its way through nearly three-dozen cities, drawing to a close on April 22nd in Amityville, New York. Whereas 2013’s The Conscious Seed Of Light and 2015’s Monarchy were thematically centered around spring and summer, respectively, Where Owls Know My Name represents the fall. And although that season is usually associated with death, for RIVERS OF NIHIL, the autumn serves as a rebirth.
Where Owls Know My Name reunites RIVERS OF NIHIL with Monarchy producer Carson Slovak (August Burns Red, The Last Ten Seconds Of Life) and Dan Seagrave, the storied artist behind such celebrated album covers as Entombed’s Left Hand Path and Suffocation‘s Effigy Of The Forgotten. Where Owls Know My Name is often just as punishing as its predecessors while assimilating ingredients from musical genres as varied as electronica, jazz, alternative, folk, and the golden age of Shrapnel Records. The resulting music is indescribably progressive, a multifaceted soundscape that goes beyond the wildest dreams of even the group’s most ardent admirers.

This November, Pennsylvania’s RIVERS OF NIHIL will embark on the biggest tour of their career thus far as openers on Death’s (DTA Tours) Swamp Leper Stomp ’14 tour! Additional support will come from Death Metal legends Obituary and Massacre. The trek will commence on November 14th at Club Nokia in Los Angeles, California and wraps up on December 7th in Miami, Florida at Grand Central.

Death are one of our biggest influences, with the incredible Human album being a constant source of inspiration. Earlier this year, RIVERS OF NIHIL released a video for Birth Of The Omnisavior, a sleek and dark clip that captures visually what this band does so well sonically: play emboldened, deftly-executed Death Metal at a level far beyond their years. Formed in 2009, the modern progressive Death Metal quintet’s music is as dark and heavy as the coal and iron on which their home city was built upon, taking influences from some of Death Metal’s heaviest, most abrasive hitters like Morbid Angel, Gojira, Spawn of Possession, and Decapitated. RIVERS OF NIHIL‘s debut album, The Conscious Seed Of Light, was recorded in March of 2013 at Mana Recording Studios in Florida with famed Metal producer/musician Erik Rutan. While The Conscious Seed Of Light is not necessarily a concept album traditionally speaking, RIVERS OF NIHIL began their project with the idea that they would release four separate albums tied together with one common theme: each reflecting a particular season of a year.
Bassist Adam Biggs elaborates: “The Conscious Seed Of Light is intended to be representative of Spring and explores various themes concerning new beginnings, growth, and an attachment to the natural world in a post-human Earth. Unlike some concept records however, we wanted to allow each song to work on its own terms. Rather than have the songs rely on each other to move a specific story structure forward; they work within their own separate narratives, but ultimately serve the album’s broader concept.”

Metal Blade Records is pleased to announce the signing of RIVERS OF NIHIL! The Modern Progressive Death Metal quintet, who formed in 2009, was born from the ruins of their decaying hometown of Reading, Pennsylvania and are on a relentless path of taking their music to the next level. About the Band:
The members of RIVERS OF NIHIL honed their chops as high schoolers in various bands in the Reading scene, eventually coming together to form RIVERS OF NIHIL in 2009. They recorded their first EPHierarchy that year with Carson Slovak (Century), regularly toured the Northeast and Midwest, and scored local opening gigs for the likes of Decapitated, Decrepit Birth, Suffocation, Dying Fetus, and Misery Index. Two years later they regrouped with producer Len Carmichael to record their next EP Temporality Unbound, which saw the band earn recognition in the national metal scene as well as start to attract the attention of record labels and eventually saw the band signing with Metal Blade Records in late 2012.
