Jeff Labar - One For The Road - Billboard Charts - promo flyer-2014

Jeff LaBar’s solo debut album, One For The Road, was released back on August 26th, via Rat Pak Records. This is one Hard Rock CD I picked up on its release date and I cannot get enough of it in my system! One For The Road demonstrates the vocal, musical and songwriting talents of Jeff LaBar; from heavy hitting songs as No Strings, Asking For A Beating, One For The Road and Nightmare On My Street to the mellow acoustic instrumentals of Muse and Ode To Page. Hello Or Goodbye is a mid-tempo track, one that is musically and lyrically one of my favorite of favorites on this terrific album. Whoa!

This debut from Jeff LaBar is chock-full of Hard Rock relevance and loaded with juicy slices of how admirable Classic Rock sounds when recorded in present day! The guitar tones of Jeff LaBar are clear as day and darn fun to absorb! Jeff LaBar plays all guitars and bass, with an all-star cast of guest drummers. Cinderella fans rejoice! Classic Rock, 80’s Arena and Hard Rock fans of any generation should dig what Jeff LaBar has created on his debut. I sure have!

I declare this Jeff LaBar debut as A MUST BUY! Jeff LaBar has done good… real good… so good that his debut album landed in the Billboard charts on September 4th! Metal be thy name! Here is the Rockin’ roll-call:

* #130 Billboard Top 200

* #1 Heatseekers

* #38 Top Rock Albums

* #21 Top Indie Releases

* #14 Top Hard Rock Albums

* #110 Top Current Releases

Stryper - Live - Whiskey A Go Go - promo cover pic

As posted on the STRYPER Facebook:

We started this band/ministry back in 1983 and our goal was to shine a bright light on a dark music world. We’ve had our share of trials and tribulations, ups and downs but miraculously (and by Gods grace), we’ve survived against many odds and are still shining that bright light where ever we can and however we can. Our faith has been questioned many times because of our unorthodox presentation but let us be “Loud N” Clear” – we are as determined, passionate and serious about our message and faith as ever before. We’re four guys writing, recording, performing and doing whatever we can do to get the word out but the reality is we need you to take it to new levels and reach even more people. Can we surpass what was accomplished three decades ago? Absolutely! Help us get the music and the message out to the masses. Share the pages, share the videos, share the music – preorder the new live album and order one for a friend, an old fan, a new fan, family, a neighbor, a co-worker, an employee or whoever else you can think of! This is a crucial time to spread God’s love through the power of music and we can’t do it without you. Thank you for 30+ years of support, God Bless ~ Stryper

Jimi Jamison - Crossroads Moment - promo cover pic

Jimi Jamison – Crossroads Moment (2008)

Jimi Jamison (singer, songwriter & musician) passed away on Sunday, August 31st, from suffering a heart attack; he was only 63 years old. Jimi Jamison is most famous for being the vocalist for Survivor, appearing on four studio albums from 1984 to 2006. Jimi Jamison had also recently toured with Survivor. He also fronted the Heavy Metal band Cobra, in the early 1980’s. Jimi Jamison has also left behind several solo recordings as part of his musical legacy, with recent releases via Frontiers Records.

Metal Odyssey expresses condolences to the family, bandmates and friends of Jimi Jamison; a grand voice of Rock ‘N Roll and may he rest in peace.

As it appears, on the Survivor Facebook page on September 1st, 2014:

The entire Survivor family is very shocked and saddened by the passing of our brother Jimi Jamison. Our thoughts, love and prayers go out to his family and friends.

Dear Friends,

There is no way to explain the loss of my brother “Jamo.” Over the years we developed a deep friendship. My heart is heavy with sadness as I struggle to express the pain, suffering and deep loss. Though I rest assured that Jim is in the best of places, it still provides little comfort for those of us left behind. His voice was magic and he had a loving heart. I called him “Golden Throat” and for good reason. Jim Jamison had a voice we will never forget. It was massive and huge and yet sweet and gentle. He was a loving soul and a brother to me in many ways. I will miss him greatly.

Peace,
FS

LIMITED EDITION 7-INCH SINGLE AVAILABLE VIA RECORD STORE DAY’S BLACK FRIDAY EVENT

BILL GOULD SPEAKS WITH ROLLING STONE

_________________________________

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 2, 2014 – Faith No More, who reunited in 2009 for a series of sold out performances and international festivals, is currently recording their first full-length album since 1997’s Album of the Year.

A limited edition (5000 copies) 7-inch single of the song “Motherfucker” will precede the April 2015 release, available via Record Store Day’s Black Friday event (Nov. 28).  The single will be released digitally on Dec. 9.

“We’ve always shared a chemistry between ourselves that’s unique to this band, but these past few years of touring together have made us aware that we not only play better as a unit, but we like the new stuff we’re coming up with,” explained Faith No More founder and bass player, Bill Gould, who also spoke with Rolling Stone in more detail:(http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/faith-no-more-to-release-first-album-in-18-years-plot-u-s-tour-20140902). “So we’ve decided: we’re going to get busy in 2015…make an album we’re proud of, kick things up a notch, get out there and perform it and maybe even dedicate a little more focus to our fans in the States this time.”

The as-of-yet untitled album is being recorded in an Oakland, Calif. studio with Gould handling production. The release will be the first from Faith No More’s newly formed imprint, Reclamation Recordings, which will be distributed by Ipecac Recordings.

Prior to the new album’s release, Faith No More will headline Australia’s Soundwave Festival in February 2015.  Worldwide tour dates will be announced soon.

Faith No More is Mike Bordin (drums), Roddy Bottum (keyboards), Bill Gould (bass), Jon Hudson (guitar) and Mike Patton (vocals).

KISS “Reason To Live” – 1987 Music Video Is: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

Posted in classic rock, classic rock bands, Hard Rock, Music, music news, rock music, rock music news, rock music videos with tags , , , , , on August 6, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

Sunrise Wallpaper - 2014 - #7771

What has inspired me to choose this 1987 music video from the iconic KISS for Stone’s Metal Pick Of The Day, are the lyrics. If you can get past the cheese and sugar-free cola imagery of the video itself, the message is simple: Everybody’s got a reason to live. Too many innocent people are dying in our world today due to wars, gang violence, unrest and hostility. Crippled, sickly children and adults are struggling everyday to live; while their waking up the next day is a personal victory. Homeless people have tales to tell; if only anyone would listen. Ebola is on the loose in Western Africa, with no validated medical cure at hand.

Too much (irrational) emphasis is put on a person’s value to society or their family; based on how high their salary is. Skin color or one’s religious loyalty (or lack thereof) can ignite unspeakable hate crimes and racism. Immigrant has become a four-letter word? Heroine is taking the lives of people around-the-clock. Community food pantries struggle to stay stocked.

Plus, if you factor in the Oregon wife and mother of two toddlers, Jennifer Huston, who went missing on July 24th (later to be found yesterday) twenty-five miles from her home, deceased and outside of her vehicle on a remote dirt road, the meaning and value of life becomes more profound. No one has all the answers to the suffering, still, as a global community, humanity needs to obliterate insanity.

I am not preaching, just stating the facts and venting about what is reality in our world today. Please don’t get depressed from all of this; instead LIVE each day and tell those you love… that you love them. Help a stranger; that same stranger may help you someday. Don’t think about donating to or volunteering for a reputable cause… DO IT!!

What is grand about this video is we can all witness the late and great Eric Carr playing the drums. Now that’s NOT cheese or sugar-free cola at all. I hope you can take in the lyrics and enjoy this music video. Metal be thy name. – Stone

Some Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts – Sunday July 27th, 2014

KIX - Rock Your Face Off - promo cover pic - 2014

It is Sunday, July 27th, 2014 and after 11:00 pm EST as I write this post. Other than wishing the team members on the Animal Planet reality series Finding Bigfoot would at last find this damn creature, wishing for world peace is probably just as moot. What isn’t uncertain are two forthcoming Hard Rock albums that I’m gonna scrape up some spare change to purchase: KIX – Rock Your Face Off and SKID ROW – Rise Of The Damnation Army/United World Rebellion Chapter Two.

Rock ‘N Roll was, is and will forever be a perfect antidote for dispelling the crappy feelings I get when reading the world AND local news! Metal be thy name, isn’t it true for you!? I truly feel it is GRAND that SKID ROW and KIX are both releasing new studio material on the same day in the USA: August 5th! This will be the second in a series of EP studio releases from SKID ROW, with KIX releasing their first studio album since 1995’s Show Business. However, KIX has been a staple and favorite on the live Hard Rock scene for many a year; their 2012 Live In Baltimore release via Frontiers Records is proof positive of this!

Both bands are legendary for sure. I am just psyched-out that SKID ROW and KIX exist in 2014, while giving their fans and the Hard Rock scene something to really look forward to once again. SKID ROW. KIX. Real Deal Hard Rock. Metal be thy name. – Stone.

PHIL RUDD “Repo Man” (Official Lyric Video) – Is Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Music, music news, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on July 21, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

Phil Rudd - Head Job - promo cover pic - 2014

PHIL RUDD – The very legendary Phil Rudd, drummer for the iconic AC/DC, will be seeing his first solo album, Head Job, releasing on August 29th, 2014, via Universal Music Australia. I cannot help myself digging-to-the-max, the first single from Head Job: Repo Man. With a healthy dose of AC/DC styled Rock ‘N Roll, Repo Man is a straight-up Rockin’ song that makes me feel damn good! That is why the Repo Man (Official Lyric Video) is Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day! – Stone

CRANK UP SOME REPO MAN, YOU MUTHAS!!

From the About column of Phil Rudd’s Facebook:

Citing influences ranging from Ringo Starr and Free/Bad Company’s Simon Kirk, to Mountain’s Leslie West and bandmates Malcolm & Angus Young, these songs and lyrics are all very special to Rudd and when talking about the release of this album which has had such a long gestation, he said: “I’m very happy for it to finally make its way out there and for people to hear it!”.

The songs were penned primarily by Rudd with the assistance of Allan Badger and Geoffrey Martin – musicians Phil met on the local scene, which he says “turned out to be a great musical partnership”. ‘Badge’ & Martin also perform vocals, guitars & bass on the album, with Rudd sitting in the producer’s seat. The tracks came together over a period of time recorded at several locations including the studio that Rudd built himself not far from his restaurant “Phil’s Place” in Tauranga, New Zealand.

RAT PAK RECORDS SET TO RELEASE “ONE FOR THE ROAD” THE DEBUT CD FROM CINDERELLA GUITARIST JEFF LABAR!

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, hard rock news, Music, music news, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on July 21, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

Jeff Labar - One For The Road - promo flyer - 2014

Cinderella guitarist Jeff LaBar’s “One For The Road” was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee with long-time friend and noted engineer Ronnie Honeycutt, and mixed & mastered by Chris “The Wizard” Collier (KXM/Lynch Mob/Lita Ford). Jeff’s first solo release entitled “One For The Road” highlights both his songwriting and guitar playing abilities. It is also the first of two, seven song offerings of classic, Hard Rock style material that will be released via Rat Pak Records.

About the album Jeff states: “This record is written about parts of my life since the hay-days of Cinderella… and there is a lot more where that came from!” The song “No Strings” features Tesla’s Troy Luccketta on drums and was mixed by Cinderella drummer Fred Coury. The song “Ode To Page” is Jeff’s acoustic tribute to Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page. Featured tracks include: “No Strings”, “Asking For A Beating”, “Muse”, “Hello Or Goodbye”, “Ode To Page”, “Nightmare on My Street” and “One For The Road”.

Tracks on the CD range from classic, early Cinderella-style Hard Rock, to groove-laden blues rock and really captures the magic and spirit of the genre that Jeff helped create! Official release date is set for August 26,2014.

Guitarist Prodigy Tyler Bryant To Open All Dates

(Los Angeles, CA) As announced, this August will see long time music legends, and mutual admirers, Jeff Beck and ZZ Top tour together for the first time ever.  The tour launches in Missoula, MT on August 8 and will run for five weeks with stops in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Denver, Detroit, Dallas, Boston and NYC (full itinerary below).

Accompanying Jeff on the road will be Jimmy Hall on Vocals, Rhonda Smith on bass, Jonathan Joseph on drums and Nicolas Meier on guitar.  Hall, lead singer for the Southern rock group, Wet Willie, previously joined Beck in 1985 singing lead vocals on Beck’s album, Flash and was nominated for a Grammy award for the performance.

Also, just announced, is the special opening act on this fantastic double bill, 21-year-old Texas guitar prodigy, Tyler Bryant, who has previously opened for Jeff Beck, Aerosmith, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Joe Bonamassa, BB King, Heart and Vince Gill among many others.  Bryant will appear on all dates except as noted below.

ZZ Top 1

Formatted with musical synergy in mind, stops along the touring route will offer fans full Jeff Beck and ZZ Top sets, with a finale that joins the English fret master with the Texas rockers each night of the tour.  ZZ Top is touring in support of two new releases this summer including The Very Baddest of ZZ Top, a new compilation from Warner Bros. and Live At Montreux 2013 on DVD and Blu-ray from Eagle Rock Entertainment.

Although groundbreaking with the headliners, this tour is not the first live collaboration between the two camps. Gibbons joined Jeff Beck and his band on stage at the 25th anniversary celebration of the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2009 at New York’s Madison Square Garden, where they performed The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s “Foxey Lady” and ZZ Top’s hit “Rough Boy” together. The following year Jeff Beck joined ZZ Top in Lucca, Italy for an extended rendition of the band’s signature piece “La Grange.” Remarkably, however, this marks the first time Jeff Beck and ZZ Top are doing any sort of extensive touring together.

THE CULT “Sonic Temple” – 1989 Album Is: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

The Cult - Sonic Temple - promo cover pic - classic

THE CULT – I was first introduced to the music of The Cult from Best Metal Buddy Scott Coverdale, back in our college days. The first album (actually cassette) that Coverdale had me listen to from The Cult was 1987’s Electric. That album’s title pretty much sums up how The Cult always came across to me with their Heavy Rock: Electric.

1989 seemed to be the transition year for every Heavy Metal band out there. Grunge was coming in like a stampede and the rest was history. However, The Cult made a HUGE statement with their fourth album Sonic Temple. Two hit songs, Fire Woman and Sweet Soul Sister made it to Headbangers Ball on MTV, with a damn good rotation at that. It definitely was solidified, through Sonic Temple, that Electric was no fluke and The Cult were no longer a Gothic Rock band; even though Gothic Rock was still swirling about the underground with pride and bushels of fans, in 1989.

The Cult - Sonic Temple - promo cover pic - classic

I believe Sonic Temple was the breakthrough album for The Cult. The one-two punch of Electric and Sonic Temple took The Cult to an Arena level; there’s just no disputing that. For my ears, the vocals of Ian Astbury have always been powerful and on Sonic Temple there’s no exception. When great guitarists names are mentioned or written about, I seldom hear or see Billy Duffy’s name. I’ll be honest with you, Billy Duffy has always been a top contender and he’s a thrill to listen to on Sonic Temple! Plus… that’s Billy Duffy pictured on the Sonic Temple album cover (above). Ian Astbury is also pictured on the album cover’s foreground.

As a songwriting team, Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy are nothing short of remarkable, in my Metal opinion. Sonic Temple was (and still is) heavy enough to magnetically lure fans of (as examples) Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Scorpions; trust me, I witnessed it with my own eyes. If you’ve never listened to The Cult, I suggest you do. Anyone new to Sonic Temple should be left in awe of the album opener Sun King; while pondering how The Cult can possibly top this song on the remainder of the album. Sonic Temple is nothing short of a true Heavy Rock classic. – Stone

Metal Side Notes:

* Jamie Stewart (bass) and Mickey Curry (drums) were the rhythm section on Sonic Temple. Yes, they nailed it on this album.

* Sonic Temple peaked at #10 on the Billboard 200.

* My idea to revisit Sonic Temple came about from my Metal Buddy Dave; he guessed the song very easily that I played on the jukebox, recently, at our favorite watering hole. Dave being a true fan of The Cult was super pumped to hear Fire Woman blaring loud; it made me very proud.

Some Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts; Connecticut Edition – Tuesday, July 15th, 2014

Boston - Live - Metal Odyssey - June 28 - 2014 - #00012

Boston – live at the Mohegan Sun Arena, Uncasville, Connecticut, June 28, 2014. Photo credit: Stone/Metal Odyssey

It is midday here in Southwestern Ohio and the weather has done a 180. We’ve gone from Summer’s oppressive humidity to early Autumn’s cool air and crisp breezes, literally overnight. Apparently the Polar Vortex is making its comeback a little too soon. Greenhouse warming be damned. Excuse me as I crack up a bit, after that last line I wrote. I recently took a one week trip up to my original home state of Connecticut. Below is just a snapshot of what I experienced. Enjoy…

_________________________

The photo at the top is from the Boston concert that I and Best Metal Buddy Scott Coverdale went to, back on June 28th of this Summer. Cheap Trick opened the night of Classic Rock bliss, at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. That above photo of Boston is the best one I took at their show, with my iPhone. My hands kept trembling while trying to get a good “shot”, plus the row of gals behind us were stomping, screaming and even handing out an unexpected back massage to Stone. Really. That’s Rock & Roll for you. I’ll write a more in-depth review on this Boston concert in the coming days, with Cheap Trick included, of course!

Besides hooking up with Scott Coverdale in Connecticut, my goal was to spend lots of time with my Father; he lives in Canton and it’s a very nice area indeed. One town connected to Canton is Avon. I stopped by the First & Last Tavern for lunch, one afternoon. It’s just as I remembered too! Clean, great food, excellent service and a bar that screams New England. I ate the oven-baked wings with a tossed salad and washed it all down with some Sam Adams Summer Ale. Whoa.

Yuengling is still NOT FOR SALE in Connecticut. WTF? Go figure? Heck, Yuengling is brewed right in the grand state of Pennsylvania! I can buy Yuengling in Ohio and that is a very good thing. Whoa.

I hope my Connecticut Edition of Some Metal and Rock N’ Roll Thoughts has been a fun read for you. I’m planning on doing a second Connecticut Edition this week! Connecticut will always be my home; while I’ll always consider Pennsylvania and Ohio my homes as well! Grand States ALL. Metal be thy name – Stone

RAMONES - Promo album pic!

Above: Front cover for debut album RAMONES, released in 1976 via Sire Records. L to R: Johnny Ramone, Tommy Ramone, Joey Ramone and Dee Dee Ramone.

It’s an overcast and humid Sunday morning, here in Southwestern Ohio. There are thunderstorms forecasted for later today, due to the cold front coming in from the Northwest. Reports are that some of these storms may be severe. Whoa. Temperatures are to drop to the lower 70’s for this (early) coming week too. That’s early October in July!

On a somber note, everyone at Metal Odyssey expresses condolences to the family, friends and fans of the legendary Tommy Ramone. At only 65 years of age,  Tommy Ramone passed away on July 11th. He was the original drummer for the Ramones and also contributed as a producer and songwriter for the band. Tommy Ramone was the drummer on the first three Ramones studio albums. If there’s a Rock And Roll Heaven, I’m certain the Ramones are now touring up there and making some noise. God bless them all.

Queen - debut album promo pic - #9907

On this day in Rock History, the debut and self-titled album from Queen was released back in 1973. What more can be said? The rest truly is iconic Rock History. By the way, I was only seven years old then. Whoa!

Iced Earth - large classic logo - #5

Jon Schaffer, (legendary guitarist & founder of ICED EARTH), has recently undergone neck surgery. Below is Jon Schaffer’s latest update and good news on his situation, as posted on the ICED EARTH Facebook page:

Hello friends,

I’m writing to let you know that I made it through the surgery and am steadily on the road to recovery. The surgeon informed us that everything went smooth during the operation and that I should be back in action within a few months.

Thank you all very much for your support, you truly are the best fans any band could ask for.

Take care and best to you all,

Jon Schaffer

DEF LEPPARD – LEAD GUITARIST PHIL COLLEN KICKS OFF SUMMER TOUR WITH ONE-OF-A-KIND JACKSON® CUSTOM “X-STROYER” GUITAR

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Music, music news, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on July 1, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

Phil Collen with new signature model Jackson PC XSTROYER (2)

New Model Celebrates Collen’s Classic Guitars Made Popular 30 Years Ago

LOS ANGELES – When the Def Leppard summer tour kicked off a week ago on Monday, in West Valley City, Utah, Def Leppard fans in attendance were among some of the first to see the brand new Jackson “X-STROYER” guitar, custom-built for Def Leppard lead guitarist, Phil Collen. Collen decided to showcase the new guitar during the band’s 2014 summer co-headlining tour with KISS.

Collen’s original guitar was popularized by the iconic Def Leppard music videos for the hit singles, “Rock of Ages,” “Foolin’” and “Photograph.” Collen plans on playing his new, custom Jackson during those songs while on tour.

When asked about his new Jackson X-STROYER Collen stated, “This guitar isn’t an exact carbon copy of my Ibanez Destroyer; it’s aesthetically based on the one I played in Def Leppard’s classic videos ‘Photograph,’ ‘Rock of Ages,’ and ‘Foolin’’ in the 1980’s. Somehow that guitar seemed to take on a life of its own with the fans when they saw it in the videos. However, my new Jackson PC X-STROYER is the exact opposite with regards to the body outline/perimeter. The X-STROYER has a mahogany body with a maple top that looks solid black from a distance. But then when you get up close you can see the beautiful wood grain of the Trans Black finish. It has DiMarzio pickups, a Floyd Rose tremolo with FU Tone titanium block and saddles and a Jackson Sustainer/Driver pickup same as I have in my Jackson PC1s. My X-STROYER has a very thick neck, which also helps the tone. This guitar feels and sounds expensive. The intent while building the new instrument was to have a body shape that invokes the ‘spirit/enthusiasm’ of my classic model, but with a twist. Mike Shannon, Jackson senior master builder, really went overboard for me on this one and I think it’s the best Jackson guitar I’ve ever played.”

Jackson has announced plans to release another Phil Collen signature model that will be available to the public in August. The Jackson PC1 Stealth, a limited edition model from the prolific guitarist’s PC line with Jackson, will have two versions of this limited edition model manufactured with only 25 of each currently being built in Corona, Calif.
