Jimi Hendrix - Crash Landing - promo album cover pic - #1127777

JIMI HENDRIX

On November 27th, 1942, Jimi Hendrix was born in Seattle, Washington, USA. Positively one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived, Jimi Hendrix rose to enormous fame quickly, with his band: The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Three highly influential studio albums were released by The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Are You Experienced (1967), Axis: Bold As Love (1967) and Electric Ladyland (1968). Dozens of Jimi Hendrix albums have been released since, ranging from live albums to remastered original works, demos and outtakes.

Jimi Hendrix "Experience Hendrix" large album pic!

On August 18th, 1969, Jimi Hendrix played The Star Spangled Banner at the legendary Woodstock Music And Art Fair in White Lake, New York. This live performance from Jimi Hendrix eventually became an iconic moment, in the history of Rock Music. I personally consider Jimi Hendrix to be a pioneer of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal.

Jimi Hendrix enlisted in the United States Army on May 31st, 1961 and received an honorable discharge on June 29th, 1962. Jimi Hendrix passed away on September 18th, 1970, at the very young age of 27. The music Jimi Hendrix left behind, in such a short time, I find it nothing short of miraculous. Generations of Rock, Hard Rock and Heavy Metal fans are forever enjoying the music of Jimi Hendrix. Generations of guitarists have been positively influenced by Jimi Hendrix. An icon and true original was and forever will be Jimi Hendrix. May Jimi Hendrix rest in peace. – Stone

ALICE COOPER – Marvel Premiere, 50th Issue From 1979 Is: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

Posted in classic rock, comic books, Hard Rock, Metal, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on November 27, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

Alice Cooper - Marvel Comics - #1 - vintage comic - 1970s - #7771AC

ALICE COOPER – It’s fun what you can find from turning over stones, while doing research for a post. I was thrilled to find out that the legendary Alice Cooper had his first comic book appearance, dating back decades with Marvel Comics Group. Here I am, looking at the cover photo for this vintage comic book and realizing I never knew it existed until now! Not to sound redundant, yet, I lived for 48 years and never knew this comic book was in existence! Check out the cover price of (US) 40 cents! 40 Cents! Those were the good old days! Metal be thy name! This has all led to me declaring that this Alice Cooper comic book is Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day! Whoa.

This Alice Cooper comic book is the 50th issue of Marvel Premiere, dating back to October of 1979. I want one! I did peruse ebay and Amazon, discovering several copies of this comic book for sale, ranging in prices, depending on condition. I saw this comic book selling in the $22 to $50 range in US funds. I will definitely buy this Alice Cooper comic book, this coming year. As with anything else, I don’t want to just throw cash around and disrupt my budget for necessities. All in good time is what I live by.

Alice Cooper - Marvel Comics - #1 - vintage comic - 1970s - #7771AC

The subtitle to Alice Cooper is Tales From The Inside and by the looks of the brilliant cover art, a terrifying story awaits! Obviously Alice Cooper is the protagonist, while The Doctor and Nurse Rozetta appear to be the antagonists. Other characters appearing in this story are Jackknife Johnny, Alex Cooper (mental patient/politician) and Veronica (Alice Cooper’s snake). Cool. You just cannot beat those comic books from yesteryear, especially when it comes to the covers; they always seemed to have that it factor that the modern era comics never really surpassed. That’s my opinion, of course.

I used to be more than an avid comic book collector, going back to those late 70’s and up until the early 90’s. That’s what makes finding this Alice Cooper comic book on the internet even more of a surprise; how could I never have known about it? To top it off, I read that there were 20 comic books that Alice Cooper appeared in for Marvel Comics. Unreal. There have always been hundreds, no make that thousands of different comic book titles that I’ve overlooked over my years collecting; I chalk it up to it’s not easy to know about everything!

From my ongoing research about this Alice Cooper comic book, I’ve also found out the names behind creating this piece of Americana: plot by Alice Cooper, Jim Salicrup, and Roger Stern, script by Ed Hannigan, pencils by Tom Sutton, inks by Terry Austin, editor is Roger Stern, cover colors by Marie Severin and cover by Sutton/Austin.

On This Day In METAL History – November 23rd – AC/DC “For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)”

ACDC - For Those About To Rock We Salute You - promo cover pic - #1981BJAY

On November 23rd, 1981AC/DC released their eighth studio album, For Those About to Rock (We Salute You. This album went on to become AC/DC’s first time to reach #1 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart. For Those About To Rock (We Salute You) went on to sell four million (plus) copies in the United States. Singles from this legendary album included the title track and Let’s Get It Up. Other notable classics on this album are: Inject The Venom, Put The Finger On You, C.O.D. and Evil Walks.

For Those About To Rock We Salute You - back cover - promo pic - #1981

Above: back cover of album jacket, with track list and album credits.

This memorable and influential AC/DC album was recorded in Paris, France. Released via Atlantic Records, the total playing time on this album is: 40:10 and was produced by the legendary Robert John “Mutt” Lange. This marked the second studio album for AC/DC with the great Brian Johnson on lead vocals. It is hard for me to realize, that three decades have passed since the release of this album. It may sound cliché, still, it feels like it was yesterday when this album released. What is so amazing is after all these years, AC/DC will be releasing, within days, yet another new studio album: Rock Or Bust.  Amazing.

For Those About To Rock We Salute You - gatefold - promo pic - #1981BJ

Above: album jacket gatefold featuring live band photo.

I remember receiving For Those About To Rock (We Salute You) on vinyl, as a Christmas gift from my parents, back in 1981. Even back then, I always got the impression that everyone was into AC/DC; heck, it still feels that way in 2014 and rightfully so. Even though it’s been so many years passed, my favorite song on this album is Let’s Get It Up. During my first weeks of owning this album, I remember putting the needle down  to just this song at least a couple of dozen times a day. Or so it seemed. I remember, as a young teen, locking myself away and enjoying this album, as if it was sweet sonic nectar from the Rock Gods. This album still psyches me out to this day, I shall gladly confess.

To this day, I consider For Those About To Rock (We Salute You) as the heaviest AC/DC album ever released. I’ll let the songs do the talking for me. Many may agree or disagree with me. Best Metal Buddy Scott Coverdale disagrees with me. He claims Flick Of The Switch from 1983 is AC/DC’s heaviest release. I respect his point too. I guess it all depends on how any album hits you, one person’s heavy does differ from another.

ACDC - For Those About To Rock We Salute You - CD back cover - promo pic - #1981AY

Above: back cover to the CD. Somehow, over the years, someone decided to change the order of the track list. Compare for yourself, with the back cover to the vinyl album jacket at (near) top of this post. It’s one of those go figure mysteries.

I unfortunately never did catch AC/DC on their tour supporting this terrific album. Being 15 years old without a driver’s license didn’t help. Plus my Metal buddies back then were either my age or younger. Forget asking the parents back then, the last thing they wanted to do was drop off a group of early teen boys at an AC/DC concert at night and in a major city; things were totally different back then, where I lived anyways. As I look back on it all now, my parents did the right thing.

I did eventually get to see AC/DC in concert; only on two occasions which I am still very grateful for. The two times I caught AC/DC in concert were: 1988’s Blow Up Your Video Tour (with Scott Coverdale) and the Razors Edge Tour back in 1990 (with my future wife). Both concerts were at the Hartford Civic Center, (now known as the XL Center), in Hartford, Connecticut. Therefore, I guess I am overdue to see AC/DC live again! Everyone seems to have an album or group of albums that just takes them down Metal memory lane; I have dozens of those albums and this AC/DC gem is righteously one of them. Metal be thy name. – Stone.

In this issue of Guitar World Holiday 2014, (above), Guitarist and producer Jimmy Page revisits two of Led Zeppelin’s most god-like albums, IV and Houses of the Holy. We also talk about the history of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven,” which remains one of the most durable songs in rock history. – Guitar World

______________________________

Stone’s Metal thoughts about Led Zeppelin:

Jimmy Page. Robert Plant. John Paul Jones. John Bonham. These are the names that forever will be Led Zeppelin. Accept no substitutes or cover acts that do their very best to pretend. The real deal Led Zeppelin lineup were those four mentioned musicians, up until the tragic passing of John Bonham, on September 25th of 1980. In the case of Led Zeppelin, nothing beats an original is an understatement.

During the rare live reunions of Led Zeppelin, neither Phil Collins (1985 Live Aid) or Jason Bonham (2007 Celebration Day Concert), could truly fill the shoes of John Bonham. With all due respect to those who’ve tried, it’s like trying to fill the shoes of George HarrisonJohn Lennon, Dimebag Darrell or Ace Frehley, it just isn’t gonna be remotely the same. I don’t claim Phil Collins or Jason Bonham were ever trying to fill these legendary shoes of John Bonham, for they are world-class drummers in their own right.

Led Zeppelin - Celebration Day - promo album banner - 2013 - #02

It’s called band chemistry for a reason and without it, that special something is gone. Fans can hear it, see it, taste it and feel it. Certainly, a Led Zeppelin reunion right now, be it a tour and/or studio album would be fun for the fans, only each surviving band member of Led Zeppelin has to want and feel the magic too; only they know if they can still capture the chemistry of yesteryear. In recent CBS This Morning interviews, both Jimmy Page and Robert Plant have denied knowing of an 800 million dollar contract being ripped up or even offered. So much for the rumor mill, it will bite you every time.

Led Zeppelin - Houses Of The Holy - deluxe - reissue - promo pic - 2014

Above: Houses Of The Holy (Deluxe CD Edition)

I’ve seen the legendary Jimmy Page on the television show circuit, recently. With his recent appearances on CBS This Morning and The Ellen DeGeneres Show, I cannot question the sincerity, humor and candor of Jimmy Page, the man comes across as the legend he’s perceived as. Jimmy Page makes it no secret that he would embrace a Led Zeppelin reunion, on these telecasts. However, a recent appearance of Robert Plant on CBS This Morning had him conveying an entirely different opinion, regarding a Led Zeppelin reunion. Robert Plant had made it clear, that Led Zeppelin was a four member band when John Bonham was alive and he pointed out the importance that the late drummer had on his life and the band. In other words, Robert Plant has no ambition to facilitate a Led Zeppelin reunion, based on his interview on CBS This Morning. I tend to believe that money is no longer a motivator for the members of Led Zeppelin; if it were the case, this band would have been touring decades ago.

Robert Plant - lullaby and the ceaseless roar - promo album cover pic - 2014

Robert Plant has his successful solo career still running on all cylinders, with his tenth solo album, Lullaby and… The Ceaseless Roar, just being released on September 9th, 2014, via Nonesuch/Warner Bros. Records. Robert Plant has earned his success as a solo artist through decades of dedication; while even winning his first ever Grammy Award in 2009 for Album Of The Year with Alison Krauss for their 2007 album: Raising Sand. Strangely, Led Zeppelin never won a Grammy Award; a reminder to all of how clueless the Grammy voting committee can truly be, historically.

Robert Plant - Alison Krauss - Raising Sand - promo cover pic

John Paul Jones has recently kept very busy touring with The Dave Rawlings Machine. This legendary bassist of Led Zeppelin was even a member of Them Crooked Vultures, a Hard Rock supergroup/power trio which included Dave Grohl and Josh Homme. Them Crooked Vultures debut album even peaked at #12 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart, in 2009. It’s as if everything that a surviving member of Led Zeppelin touches turns to gold and that is mystical in itself.

Led Zeppelin - Mothership - promo album cover pic - #996677

Jimmy Page has in recent years stirred the legacy of Led Zeppelin into the social consciousness of Rock fans both young and old, via reissues and the unparalleled greatest hits: 2007’s Mothership. Yes, Jimmy Page has also enjoyed an acclaimed solo career, only now it’s the focus of Led Zeppelin’s legacy of songs that seems to drive him. And why not so? With the classic catalog of Led Zeppelin albums being reissued and given deluxe CD package treatments, the aura of this band continues to burn bright. These legendary Led Zeppelin albums are once again returning to the Billboard 200 Albums Chart, due largely on the fact that these reissues also contain previously unreleased material. Jimmy Page as an album producer will forever be revered, his passion and intellect of song and sound has few equals, in my Metal opinion.

Jimmy Page - Jimmy Page Book - promo pic - 2014 - #1122

Above: The legendary Jimmy Page and his newly released book – Jimmy Page By Jimmy Page

These legendary members of Led Zeppelin have remained musically focused, talent-fueled and continuously relevant with each passing decade; they’ve been the constant and never-ending improvement model, at its finest, for all to follow in the world of Rock And Roll. Led Zeppelin doesn’t need their band logo put on toilet paper or pillow cases to earn a quick buck; nor does this band need to be force-fed onto the masses with smart aleck marketing schemes to stay relevant. I personally (since I’ve been alive) cannot recall an era of Rock when Led Zeppelin lost their relevancy; this iconic band has stood the test of time.

Even the mighty KISS has suffered an identity crisis musically, on more than one occasion, during their reign; whereas Led Zeppelin takes critical heat for only CODA, a 1982 studio album released after the fact, if you will. It’s all about the music and the timeless sound of Led Zeppelin that keeps their Rock And Roll flame burning. I was just a tad too young to have been able to see Led Zeppelin in concert, back in the ’70’s; still its their catalog of music and live videos that I can forever embrace. Those are my Metal thoughts and opinions, anyways. May the magic of Led Zeppelin live on forever. Metal be thy name. – Stone.
