RIVERS OF NIHIL will take on a North American tour this March and April with Dying Fetus, Thy Art Is Murder, Enterprise Earth, and Sanction. The journey will commence March 15th in Poughkeepsie, New York and make its way through nearly three-dozen cities, drawing to a close on April 22nd in Amityville, New York.
The band will be touring in support of their third full-length, Where Owls Know My Name, set for release on March 16th — just one day after tour kick off — via Metal Blade Records. Whereas 2013’s The Conscious Seed Of Light and 2015’s Monarchy were thematically centered around spring and summer, respectively, Where Owls Know My Name represents the fall. And although that season is usually associated with death, for RIVERS OF NIHIL, the autumn serves as a rebirth.
Where Owls Know My Nam reunites RIVERS OF NIHIL with Monarchy producer Carson Slovak (August Burns Red, The Last Ten Seconds Of Life) and Dan Seagrave, the storied artist behind such celebrated album covers as Entombed’s Left Hand Path and Suffocation‘s Effigy Of The Forgotten. Where Owls Know My Name is often just as punishing as its predecessors while assimilating ingredients from musical genres as varied as electronica, jazz, alternative, folk, and the golden age of Shrapnel Records. The resulting music is indescribably progressive, a multifaceted soundscape that goes beyond the wildest dreams of even the group’s most ardent admirers.
For a first preview of Where Owls Know My Name, “The Silent Life” can be heard at: metalblade.com/riversofnihil where the record can also be preordered in various formats.

CRADLE OF FILTH‘s latest album, Hammer Of The Witches, was brought to fruition in Britain’s Witch County, in darkest rural Suffolk at the reputedly haunted Grindstone Studios. The album’s title is named after the “Malleus Maleficarum,” a medieval document of guidelines regarding the persecution and torture of witches – only CRADLE OF FILTH‘s title version is more retributory: It’s the Hammer Of The Witches; the hammer is in the witches’ hands and it’s payback time.
CRADLE OF FILTH have cast a commanding and macabre shadow across the metal scene for nearly a quarter of a century. Armed with their trademark, cross-pollinated assault that taps into myriad strands of sonic extremity and morbid opulence, they have steadily conquered the entire world, unleashing a malevolent slew of classic albums along the way. From the raw and rambunctious savagery of their 1994 debut The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh to the wickedly monstrous, technicolor bombast of 2012’s The Manticore & Other Horrors, the CRADLE ethos and aesthetic have had a huge impact on the evolution of Metal, the band’s insatiable appetite for performing live and frontman Dani Filth‘s unerring charisma and sense of occasion ensuring that they have established a powerful and enduring connection with Hell-bound acolytes everywhere.

On October 28th, 1983 – The Horror film POSSESSION (1981 film) opened at the Rivoli and other theaters in New York City. This B flick stars Isabelle Adjani, Sam Neil (of Jurassic Park fame) and Heinz Bennent. Possession was written and directed by Andrzej Zulawski.
On October 28th, 1994 – The Science-Fiction film STARGATE was released to wide-screen theaters in the USA. This film stars the legendary Kurt Russell and James Spader. I absolutely love this movie! I recommend STARGATE tremendously! This movie is not difficult to find; I am now in the mood to watch it again!
If you are addicted to the Ancient Aliens series that is currently airing on the History Channel, you’ll fall head over heals for STARGATE! By the way, I once met James Spader at a wedding I attended in Long Island, New York. This chance encounter took place back in the 90’s. Pretty cool, huh?
On October 28th, 2005 – The super gory and horrific SAW II was released to wide-screen theaters in the USA, via Lions Gate Films. SAW II was directed by the great Darren Bousman.
On October 28th, 2015 – The newly released studio album, Soul Sphere, from Chicago’s BORN OF OSIRIS is at #1, on the iTunes Top 100 Heavy Metal Albums Chart. Holy shit and yeah! This album is scathingly extreme and whoa! Soul Sphere receives the Metal Odyssey Seal Of Extreme Metal Approval. My eardrums are truthfully scarred from this album and Metal Be Thy Name!

On March 13th, 1981 – The Fun House was released to wide-screen theaters, via Universal. The legendary Tobe Hooper was the director for this horror film and Lawrence Block was the writer. I remember watching this movie quite a few times on HBO, back in the day, during an era when the R rated movies were only shown after ten o’clock at night. This creepy film shows why you should not stay overnight at a traveling carnival. Whoa!
On March 13th, 1992 – Highway To Hell was released to wide-screen theaters, via Hemdale. A young American couple are warned not to sleep after the second tree on a certain back road, while traveling to Las Vegas to get married. After fueling up their car and falling asleep, (the girlfriend) Rachel gets arrested by a Hellcop and (the boyfriend) Charlie now has to go to hell to rescue his fiancé.
I love the AC/DC title to this movie and its subtitle Where The Toll Is You Soul is classic! This film was directed by Ate de Jong.
On March 13th, 2009 – The super scary thriller, The Last House On The Left, was released to wide-screen theaters, via Rogue Pictures. The iconic Wes Craven directed and produced the original version of this movie, back in 1972. Wes Craven returned to produce this remake with Sean Cunningham. This film took in over 45 million (U.S. dollars) at the box office. I suppose if a house looks creepy enough, don’t go near it. ‘Nuff said.
On March 13th, 2015 – It Follows is released to wide-screen theaters. Written and directed by David Robert Mitchell, this horror film centers around a 19-year-old girl named Jay and the terrifying situation she finds herself in, after a sexual encounter with another teenage boy. Apparently a supernatural force follows her every step since her sexual encounter and this same evil force can be passed along to another person, via a sexual situation. This movie is obviously pretty darn sexual? Metal be thy name, I’m confused.

I always state that Horror and Paranormal movies are Metal. I cannot help feeling that way. The Devil Inside is no different, being a Horror movie that was promoted with posters that can rival many evil Metal album covers, both past and present. The Devil Inside was released on January 6th, 2012, via Paramount Pictures.
Just looking at the demonic nun on the top movie poster is like opening a jar of evil whoop-ass! This movie poster has Black Metal imagery screaming from every crevice! The Devil Inside movie poster below is almost just as abominable to look at; I feel the imagery portrays both Black Metal and Death Metal. Do you feel the same way?
Based on a true story, The Devil Inside is about Maria Rossi; a confessed killer of three people. Maria Rossi has been locked up for twenty years, inside a hospital for the criminally insane, located in Italy. Her daughter Isabella seeks to find the truth about her mother’s murderous night. Isabella asks two Exorcists to help her mother overcome evil possession. Then… well… they all find out that four pissed-off demons are possessing Isabella’s mother, Maria Rossi. Whoa and unholy crap!
The Devil Inside was written and directed by William Brent Bell and stars Suzan Crowley as Maria Rossi and Fernanda Andrade as Isabella.

On November 12th, 1976 – Queen released Somebody to Love, the first single off of their fifth studio album: A Day at the Races. The song would reach #2 on the U.K. Singles Chart and #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart in America. Above photo: cover sleeve artwork for the 7″ single/45 rpm.
On this day in 1977 – With their debut album Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols, The Sex Pistols reached #1 on the U.K. Albums Chart for the first and only time. As the only studio album ever released by this legendary band, its influence on Heavy Metal became evident in later years, with Motörhead and Anthrax covering God Save The Queen and Megadeth covering Anarchy In The UK.
On November 12th, 1982 – The Horror/Dark Comedy film, Creepshow, was released in U.S. theaters. With a brilliant screenplay by Stephen King and legendary directing from George A. Romero, Creepshow has earned status as a timeless Horror classic, in my Metal opinion. Creepshow consists of five short stories; each a gem in their own right.
Creepshow featured some famously talented actors of the day: Hal Holbrook, Adrienne Barbeau, Fritz Weaver, (the late) Leslie Nielsen, (the late) Carrie Nye, (the late) E. G. Marshall and of course, Ted Danson of Cheers fame. Stephen King is also the only actor, in one of the five short stories: The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill. Trust me, Stephen King puts on a grand performance, giving his Jordy Verrill character both a hilarious and somber persona. I highly recommend Creepshow to all who love Horror and Dark Comedy.
Man, I remember going to the theater to see this film with a cool Metal buddy named Jaime, back in 1982; our walk back home was at night, thus we were spooked pretty damn good! I just rented Creepshow a couple of weeks ago and watched it with my wife and daughter; it was their first time watching this movie and they were super-spooked by it all! Good times. Creepshow is… Metal!
On this day in KISSTORY – November 12th, 2014 – KISS Rocks Vegas Show #4 is tonight, at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Metal be thy name!
Born on November 12th, 1964 was David Ellefson. Happy Rockin’ Birthday, David! Hell-yeah and whoa! David Ellefson is the world-famous bassist and co-founding member for the legendary Megadeth. David Ellefson also played bass on the 2004 Soulfly album: Prophecy. David also released his autobiography, My Life With Deth, on October 29th, 2013.

Oakland, California – FROM HELL is a new horror concept heavy metal band. Their debut release on Scourge Records on April 8th, 2014 is called Ascent From Hell and it is as heavy as it is epic! FROM HELL is the brainchild of George Anderson aka Aleister Sinn, the live narrator of this horror story. This project began in 2007 after his previous band Down Factor with then drummer Ramon Ochoa, Brooks Rocco on guitar and Waylon Ford on bass broke-up. Interested in putting a different type of band together that was not involved in politics, George formed FROM HELL to tell horror stories in the vein of King Diamond. Every song is in some way linked to all of the other songs and when each album starts, they don’t stop until the very end.
After several line-up changes, during the recording of the first album, George enlisted some amazing players to record with him in FROM HELL. For this debut recording, metal icons Paul Bostaph from Slayer on drums, Steve Smyth from Nevermore on lead guitar and Damien Sisson from Death Angel on bass were recruited to make this record happen. This recording is diabolically epic, and heavy as Hell! Every song is different from the next, covering many genres of metal; from thrash metal and black metal to death metal and doom metal. This album is as dynamic as metal can be!
Also participating in this recording is Phil Bennett of the iconic rock band Starship, playing piano on the track Dead Reckoning and a 22-piece choir, The Pacific Mozart Ensemble on four other tracks. Establishing new ground, this record has the first recorded blast beat by Paul Bostaph, orchestrated with shredding guitar solos from Steve Smyth and heavy melodic & syncopated bass by Damien Sisson.
Produced by George Anderson and Steve “Snake” Green, guitar player from Skinlab, a Century Media recording artist, this recording is a theatrical 70 minutes long with segues in between each song to give additional detail to this horror story. With songs like The Walking Dead, Soul Crusher, Nun With A Gun and Ascent From Hell, this record will take you on a heavy metal horror ride to Hell!
As one can imagine, with so many legendary players in its ranks, it is hard to schedule live performances. There is a CD Release/Listening Party and signing event scheduled for early April 2014 in Oakland, California. FROM HELL will tour the West Coast and select East Coast markets to support the release of Ascent From Hell in the summer and fall of 2014. FROM HELL’s show will include a few different guest performers and members of the band who play in other bands will perform as their touring and recording schedules allow.
Visit the band’s website www.fromhell.net or www.scourgerecords.com for more information and future tour dates.
FROM HELL – Ascent From Hell to be released Physically and Digitally worldwide on April 8th, 2014.

Surely an anomaly in GHOUL‘s catalog, the EP features songs written exclusively in their unique brand of surf metal the quartet has previously only dabbled in. Hang Ten picks up right whereTransmission Zero left off, relaying the tale of a Creepsylvania in tatters, and the terrible power struggle that ensues between two vicious motorcycle gangs. Noted Cambridge University musical anthropologist Dr. Mantle Bannister PhD had this to say about this odd assortment of tenebrous tunes: “Why, it’s quite remarkable. I’ve never heard the like. Is it surf? Not quite. Is it metal? Maybe. Is it jazz? No, that’s a stupid question, unfit for a real life noted musical anthropologist such as myself. It’s from Creepsylvania, you say? Ghastly country. Absolutely crawling with gypsies. Say, old chap, who let you in to my office?”
