KYLESA – STREAM “QUICKSAND” VIA SPIN; “ULTRAVIOLET” COVER ART & TRACK LISTING REVEALED

Mar. 25, 2013, Philadelphia – Kylesa premiere Quicksand, a new song from their forthcoming album Ultraviolet (May 28, Season of Mist), via Spin (http://www.spin.com/articles/kylesa-quicksand-ultraviolet-stream).

“Quicksand is a quick 2:35 of ghostly dreamdoom that joins the melodies of ’90s shoegaze with the churn of modern sludge and a riff straight from the Billy Corgan playbook,” says Spin in a brief write-up accompanying the song stream, adding that the song is “a muscular swirl that should please anyone who thought m b v didn’t have enough shouting.”

The band has also unveiled the cover art for Ultraviolet, which was done by Sean Beaudry. Beaudry, a fellow Savannah resident, did the artwork for the band’s Time Will Fuse Its Worth reissue. Kylesa will play a free, all ages show in their hometown of Savannah at The Dollhouse on Apr. 19 as a way to thank fans for their ongoing support.

Pitchfork, in the band’s first interview regarding Ultraviolet (http://pitchfork.com/features/show-no-mercy/9084-kylesa/), said of the album: “It’s the… heavy rock band’s darkest, most atmospheric record to date.  The collection, which features an array of subtle electronic elements, makes for an expressive, immersive listen that will likely find the double-drumming quintet a larger audience.”

“Unspoken,” also from Ultraviolet, was released online in late February, leading Stereogum to say “… if the album’s first single is any indication, they’ve continued moving away from their peers as well as their own past, conquering new territory,” adding “it’s a total triumph.”  The song can be streamed here:  https://soundcloud.com/season-of-mist/kylesa-unspoken.

BLACK STAR RIDERS – Announce Debut Album Title, Track Listing & Worldwide Release Dates

BLACK STAR RIDERS, the new band featuring THIN LIZZY members Ricky Warwick, Damon Johnson, Scott Gorham and Marco Mendoza together with drummer Jimmy DeGrasso (Alice Cooper / Megadeth), have announced ‘All Hell Breaks Loose’ as the title of their debut album on Nuclear Blast Entertainment, which will be released Worldwide on the following dates:

The past few years have been such a wild ride and now with the release of the album, it sounded like a bad-ass album title that summed up what BLACK STAR RIDERS is all about.”

BUCKCHERRY – “Confessions” Is Out Now And It’s: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

BUCKCHERRY – I’ll call it this way, while I was eagerly anticipating the release of Buckcherry’s sixth studio album, Confessions, I knew it would just have to be really good. Let me say this much, my fellow Metal brethren and Rockaholics: Confessions is really, really, really good. Really. Confessions is this type of good: it’s running through the village square naked, while bellowing hallelujah to the Hard Rock and Rock ‘N’ Roll Gods. Now, that’s what Stone calls good.

My eardrums and whatever part of my brain that’s responsible for absorbing music has been thanking me, ever since I’ve been listening to Confessions. The hooks, rhythms, melodic continuance, psyche-you-out beats, vocals, backing vocals, mellow album closing and irresistibly grand presence of guitar driven songs makes Confessions a measuring stick for all other Hard Rock and Rock albums released in 2013. I’m not trying to bamboozle anyone here. Take my Metal word for it and go cash it in at the Rockaholic savings and loan and tell ’em you were sent by Stone.

Apparently, Buckcherry realizes that there are many Rock, Hard Rock and Metal bands out there all competing for the same audiences and greenbacks. Therefore, obviously, Buckcherry decided to write and record a new album that would stand above the heap and kick the living shit out of my Hard Rock lovin’ ass. Has this new Buckcherry album done the same to you? If so, it feels damn fine… doesn’t it?

It’s like that old cliché of capturing lightning in a bottle; yet with Confessions, Buckcherry captured Hard Rock lightning in a case of bottles. With Confessions being an album of songs that carry the theme of the Seven Deadly Sins, (as seven song titles of Gluttony, Wrath, Greed, Sloth, Pride, Envy and Lust portray), this is an album that is as lyrically potent as its memorable music.

With songs like album opener Gluttony and the mid-tempo Rocker of The Truth, Confessions is stacked and packed with song favorites I could continue to list; only what’s the point when the total package is my favorite? I will note that Dreamin’ Of You is a perfect song to end this album. With its inspiring lyrics and slower vibe, Buckcherry sends a clear message through Dreamin’ Of You; that there is still hope and a spirit of belief in oneself for us to reach for after all. Buckcherry can take a justified Hard Rockin’ and Rockin’ bow and I’m raising the horns to the sky for their accomplishment with Confessions. Metal be thy name.

Los Angeles, CA – Driving power pop/rock band Wise Girl will soon release their self-titled three-song EP on iTunes. The New York fivesome is equipped with straight forward talent and no need for gimmicks. The WISE GIRL EP showcases the perfect combination of poppy melodies, rockin’ guitars and quirky songwriting technique all wrapped together in a no-nonsense attitude.

After two years in the making Wise Girl is the brainchild of songwriter Abby Weitz (vocals, guitar). Wise Girl includes Chris Fasulo (producer, lead guitars), Abby Lee (backup vocals, tambourine), Harry Keithline (drums) and Sean Kane (bass). Growing up, front woman Abby Weitz was such a music fanatic that she had to listen to The Beatles in order to fall asleep at night. At age 11 she started taking drum lessons which then led to her interest in learning to play the guitar at age 13.

Born to lead, Weitz started a Strokes cover band in high school followed by an original band under the name of Drella, playing basement/garage shows in her hometown of Long Beach. After dropping out of college six weeks in because “it wasn’t her thing”, she started a punk band with her best friend Liz called The Lookaways.

Determined to take over New York City, The Lookaways played notorious clubs around Manhattan such as Sin-E, Lit Lounge, Don Hill’s, including the legendary CBGB’s and on a mini East Coast tour, played a few shows on the Van’s Warped Tour. After The Lookaways split, Weitz decided to start a music publishing company called Wise Girl, stemmed from her strong belief in “Girl Power” and she ended up using the name for her current project.

Elements of Wise Girl’s music can be attributed to their influences drawn from some of Weitz’s favorites such as The Ramones, The Beatles, The Muffs, Letters to Cleo, Weezer and 60’s girl groups. The band’s feisty single, “Set In Stone” is a perfect example of how the band creates a rhythmic blend of catchy melodies, gritty guitars and witty yet matter-of-fact lyrics. Produced by Chris Fasulo, the Wise Girl EP’s content centers on love gone wrong and the battles that we face when caught in the middle of it.

The internationally known designer Kate Spade featured Wise Girl on their website and blog as a runner-up in a Battle of the Bands contest to open for The Vivian Girls at their SXSW showcase. They were also chosen as one of the 15 bands to represent Manhattan in New York’s Annual “Battle of the Boroughs,” sponsored by New York Public Radio in June of 2012. Picking up a consistent following along the way, Wise Girl has performed at notable NY music venues such as Mercury Lounge, The Bowery Electric, Piano’s and The Knitting Factory.

The band has recently opened up for major pop punk band The Dollyrots and Rock ‘n’ Roll sensations, Prima Donna and performed as a part of the 2010 and 2011 CMJ Music Marathon. To add to the list, Wise Girl did a performance/interview on the national television show Beta TV and earned a mention in an American Songwriter’s article (“How Does an Independent Artists Stay Relevant While Creating New Music” – Sept. 2012). In September of 2012 Weitz scored an endorsement deal with guitar company, Daisy Rock Guitars.

CHIP DIMONICK – Party Rock is here to stay and Chip DiMonick has made this very loud and clear on their fourth album: The Sign Of A New Generation. This fun-fabulous and rifftastic 5 song offering from Chip DiMonick is downright Rockin’ Righteous and should be on any Rockaholic’s list of good-times-must-have albums from 2012. You just gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta let Chip DiMonick Rockify your brain! I have. It feels F’n cool.

Chip DiMonick became famous on the Pittsburgh music scene back in 2005, with the debut release Bat An Eyelash causing a formidable stir upon the East Coast. Opening for such kick-ass national acts as Wednesday 13, Lynch Mob, LA Guns, Adelita’s Way and Art Of Dying, Chip DiMonick shouldn’t be an underground Heavy Rock band for too much longer. Then again, the underground scene wouldn’t want to see Chip DiMonick go anyways!

There’s something to be said about real FUN Party Rock that Chip DiMonick serves up and that is: IT KICKS FUN ROCKIN’ ASS! When a song such as When The Drunkest Girls Wear The Shortest Skirts gets me all fired-up and singing along… then Chip DiMonick have accomplished their Rockin’ deed they’ve aimed for and I’m grateful for it. Ring that Party Rock bell and tell your lame-ass neighbors to go to hell. Metal be thy name.


My favorite song on The Sign Of A New Generation is She Won’t Let Me Play. Holy shit I love this song. This song should be played on every (supposedly cool) FM and satellite radio station in the entire F’n universe. Big drums, big bass and big guitars are abundant on all 5 songs, coupled with the stylish vocals of Chip DiMonick himself.

From Pump (the anthem inspired by the pride of Pittsburgh sports scene) to its anthemic counterpart (and party-crazed igniter) title song, Chip DiMonick doesn’t hold back on raising the mercury on the psyche-your-adrenaline meter! If you’re uptight and/or constipated, get lost. Cool people, all-night party maniacs, Rockaholics, fun Rock chicks (who can stay out late) and fans of 80’s Arena Rock, Hard Rock and Glam will appreciate what Chip DiMonick have accomplished with their new album. Metal be thy name.

GOLD – Dutch Rock Act Drops Video From Debut LP On Ván Records

Germany’s cult label Ván Records is proud to unleash the opening track to Interbellum, the debut album from Dutch Rock outfit, GOLD, confirmed for worldwide release on the edge of the Mayan calendar, December 7th, 2012.

Recorded at the Amsterdam Recording Company, Interbellum offers nine hard-rocking pop songs that will enrich the contemporary Rock landscape with its fresh vocals, catchy riffing, its driving rhythms and refreshing songwriting. A world in crisis needs a Rock album full of urgency, anger and hope. Here it is.

The opening track to Interbellum, “One Of Us,” was shot on a gloomy Autumn afternoon at GOLD‘s rehearsal space at Studio SanteBoutique, Rotterdam. Check it out below!

With their unique brand of progressive rock, Focus manifested themselves at the start of the ’70s as the most successful and appreciated of all the Dutch pop-rock exports. Fronted by founding member Thijs Van Leer, and best known for their hits “Hocus Pocus”, “House of The King” and “Sylvia”, as well as critically acclaimed albums ‘Moving Waves’, ‘Focus 3’ and ‘Hamburger Concerto’, the iconic Dutch music masters are back with their tenth album, which is guaranteed to please their legions of fans!

After a comeback in the early 2000’s, which resulted in the well-received albums ‘Focus 8’ and ‘Focus 9’, the band regrouped with a fantastic new line-up. Along with Thijs van Leer on vocals, flute and keyboards, back on the drums is famed Focus drummer Pierre van der Linden, who joined the group on their second album ‘Moving Waves’ in 1972. RUSH – Has The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Ignored These Prog Legends Long Enough? Take The Poll!

RUSH – Canada’s greatest Rock & Progressive Rock band ever. You can even throw in Canada’s greatest Hard Rock band ever too, if you like. Simply put, one of the greatest bands in Rock Music history. RUSH has been ignored by The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame for what reason(s) again? I would certainly like to know the reason(s) for RUSH not being enshrined inside that building in Cleveland, Ohio.

Let’s face it, the legendary RUSH has been influencing countless bands and musicians, while psyching-out their fans, going on 5 decades now! RUSH is a pioneering Progressive Rock band that makes credible all-time lists at every turn, with absolutely no sign of stopping! Whoa! Metal be thy name!

The musical excellence that Geddy Lee (bass & vocals), Alex Lifeson (guitars) and Neil Peart (drums & percussion) radiates from their vast catalog of studio and live albums is mind-boggling to me… and I shall never stop saluting this unreal important band.

(Los Angeles – September, 2012) – The Los Angeles-based alt-punk band behind the critically-praised debut album, Movies, THE STRIPMINERS announce the November 13th release of their sophomore record Frail Hope Ranch.  THE STRIPMINERS are Brett Anderson, vocalist for rock dynamos The Donnas, Paul Stinson from punkers The Radishes, producer/guitarist Scrote (Daniel Johnston, Puscifer), Brett Simons (Brian Wilson, Fiona Apple, Melissa Etheridge) on bass, DJ Bonebrake (of X fame) on drums and Holland Greco (Anais Mitchell, The Peak Show) multi-instrumentalist, singer.

THE STRIPMINERS debut album, Movies, proved the band’s penchant for an eclectic and varied mix of punk, alternative country, garage rock and Pixies-like flair. Frail Hope Ranch takes on a more cohesive musical theme, comprised almost entirely of moody alt-country ballads conveying the visual of the name behind the title track.  Interestingly, these songs were written and recorded at the same time as their debut, but the band chose to save these to be packaged together in this standout sophomore release. Thematically the songs revolve around a male/female duo: “Sometimes we’re siblings, sometimes we’re lovers, it’s a little sick, but who wants to hear songs about healthy people?” states Lady Brett.

Song choice is critical to a record’s success and these veterans of the alt-punk genre knew exactly what they were doing.  The album jolts the senses with “Gothic”, a spooky, guitar/violin instrumental, painting a picture of fear, pathos and confusion. The tracks continue with a cinematic flair in “Y’all Part 1” and “Y’all Part 2” which frame the album’s standout track and first single, “The Twins,” demonstrating the album’s lyrical poetry, depth and complexity.  THE STRIPMINERS slow-motion fuzzy guitars, lethargic, deep bass picking and atmospheric cymbal rolls, blend with lyrics that are equally dark, matching heartbreaking refrains sung by Stinson and Anderson, “I’m still hiding away with you” and “I’m still pining away over you”. The album finale, a rockin’ cover of The Zombies’ “She’s Not There”, is perhaps the most impressive cover of the song to date, incorporating vibes, tight harmonies, and (eventually) the anger that the lyrics convey.
