BLACK STAR RIDERS – ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE

BLACK STAR RIDERS, the new band featuring THIN LIZZY members Ricky Warwick, Damon Johnson, Scott Gorham and Marco Mendoza together with drummer Jimmy DeGrasso (Alice Cooper / Megadeth), have announced All Hell Breaks Loose as the title of their debut album on Nuclear Blast Entertainment, which will be released in the UK on the 27th May 2013.

The artwork features a painting by Gil Elvgren (March 15, 1914 – February 29, 1980), the legendary US painter best known for his work on pin-up girls, advertising and illustration:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gil_Elvgren

The artworks ties directly to the origins of the album title. Ricky Warwick explains “I was watching a documentary about World War II bombers and saw the name painted on the side of one of the aircraft. The name just resonated with me and it seemed to encapsulate the turmoil that we, as a society, are currently experiencing. The past few years have been such a wild ride and now with the release of the album, it sounded like a bad-ass album title that summed up what BLACK STAR RIDERS is all about.”

Bound For Glory, the debut single from the album, saw its exclusive first play on Ken Bruce’s Radio 2 radio show on Thursday 21st March 2013. The song is now available to hear HERE!

THIN LIZZY – ICON Greatest Hits: 11 Songs Of Timeless, Classic Hard Rock

Posted in classic rock, classic rock songs, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on August 13, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

THIN LIZZY – Released on June 21st, 2011, via Mercury Records is the Icon series of greatest hits installment of the ultra-legendary: Thin Lizzy. There are 11 songs on this Thin Lizzy compilation. Timeless, Revered, Classic Rock songs all. This past week, I bought this CD for two reasons: 1. I really dig Thin Lizzy and 2. I do not have every Thin Lizzy album on CD. Stone still swims among his vinyl and cassettes, therefore, Metal be thy name and ring that Old School F’n bell.

This Thin Lizzy CD set me back $7 (U.S.) and I’m happier than a pig in murky, stink ridden mud now that I own it. How can any of these Thin Lizzy classics ever grow stale? Impossible I say! These Thin Lizzy songs are the reason why the word “Classic” was put in front of the word “Rock”.

It is a difficult task in choosing which is my favorite Thin Lizzy song on this CD. I’ll go with Cowboy Song for now, then an hour later it is Jailbreak. Tomorrow it’s The Boys Are Back In Town as my top choice. You get the Metal picture.

Thin Lizzy – Icon Track Listing:

Whiskey In The Jar

The Rocker

Still In Love With You

Rosalie

The Boys Are Back In Town

Jailbreak

Cowboy Song

Borderline

Don’t Believe A Word

Bad Reputation

Dancing In The Moonlight (It’s Caught Me In It’s Spotlight)

Thin Lizzy – Thunder and Lightning: Revisiting A Classic From 1983

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on June 21, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

THIN LIZZY – I’ve been in a real deal Old School mood this week. For Metal sakes, I’m always in an Old School mood. I have a new cell phone with total access to social networks and I could care less. I still can’t figure out what every button does on the remote control for my television. I’m just that kind of Old School dude. Anyways… back to Thin Lizzy. I try to frequently “revisit” those Classic Rock albums and Old School Heavy Metal albums that quite frankly, should never be forgotten. 1983’s Thunder and Lightning from Thin Lizzy is one such album.

I guess it’s easy to tag this Thunder and Lightning album as either Classic Rock, Hard Rock or (Old School) Heavy Metal… take your pick. At the end of the Metal day, it makes no big difference to me. This Thunder and Lightning album makes me feel good and yes, psyches-me-out on many, many occasions. The early 80’s was a special time in Hard Rock and Heavy Metal, Thin Lizzy was an integral part of that time in Rock history.

As I was preparing to write up this post, I looked back at my album review I did for Thunder and Lightning, more than two years ago on March 17th, 2009. Yes, I edited it again for grammar and (ahem) coolness… and I updated it for this actual post. (See the link below). Late today, as I was finishing up my thoughts on this post, KEV MOORE (BC Sweet) commented on my updated review from 2009! That tells me right there, I should be updating my older reviews more often! Metal be thy name… Kev Moore is one cool (Old School) Rock musician and has shared some very welcomed anecdotes and thoughts here on Metal Odyssey.

I guess my revisiting The twelfth and subsequently last studio album from Thin Lizzy has paid off. My Metal intent all along was to remind us fellow Rockaholics about this album and hopefully spread the Metal word to a younger generation of Heavy Rock fans.

Without further ado, here is my corn-dog intro to the Thunder and Lightning album review:

A long time ago, well, on March 17th, 2009 to be exact, I wrote a concise album review and/or bundled bunch of Metal thoughts on Thunder and Lightning. Click the big header link below to read it… go ahead, you just might like it.

4671028Here are five quick and easy to read Metal facts! Who knows when this vital Metal information will come in handy? Might you wind up in the Cash Cab? An inter-office Metal trivia contest? Surprise your spouse or companion with some really cool – hey, did you know that…

*  Krokus – this legendary Heavy Metal band hails from Solothurn, Switzerland.

  •  Helloween – these Power Metal icons are currently celebrating, in 2009, their 25th  Anniversary! It all started back in 1984, thank you Helloween!
  • Scum was the original name for the Swedish Death Metal (Viking) band we all know and embrace as Amon Amarth. The group formed under the name Scum in 1988 and was changed to Amon Amarth in 1992.
  • Black Stone Cherry – drummer John Fred Young’s father – Richard – is a founding member of the Grammy Award winning Kentucky Headhunters.
  • Legendary lead guitarist Brian Robertson is well known for his career with the great Thin Lizzy, Brian also was a member of Motorhead, playing lead guitar on their 1983 release Another Perfect Day.

Well, that is about it for some quick Metal facts. I promise to deliver more interesting and life inspiring Metal facts, on a more consistent basis. I do want to pass along this bit of Metal advice to all Metalheads worldwide – BE TRUE TO METAL AND METAL WILL BE TRUE TO YOU”

Thin Lizzy “Still Dangerous” reminds me Metal never ages.

9207306The late Phil Lynott, of Thin Lizzy, lives on again with the release of Still Dangerous Live At The Tower Theatre Philadelphia 1977. 32 years later, this concert is still being enjoyed and revered by Metal, Hard Rock and Rock fans and any fan of great Classic Rock. It is obvious to me, that when VH1 Classic Records releases this genre of music now, it tells the world that Heavy Metal never ages. The vocals, song writing and bass playing of the late Phil Lynott will be handed down for generations through CD releases like this. Thin Lizzy, to me, represents the sound of 1970’s Heavy Metal, when this genre was just beginning to evolve and blossom into what it is today. The live music on Still Dangerous is such an essential listen for both young and veteran Metal, Hard Rock and Classic Rock fans around the globe.

Jailbreak, Cowboy Song, Soldier Of Fortune and Boys Are Back In Town never sounded better, plus these songs are captured in all of their heavy, live brilliance from 1977. While I listen to Dancing In The Moonlight, live, it proves to me, that a heavy band can become legendary by not playing heavy constantly. It is a must deserved tribute to a legendary band – Thin Lizzy. To have this live music from Thin Lizzy released in 2009, is an important listening lesson and moment to revisit – in Rock Music history.

Thin Lizzy on “Still Dangerous”: Phil Lynott – lead vocals and bass, Brian Robertson – guitar, Scott Gorham – guitar and Brian Downey on drums.

THIN LIZZY – THUNDER AND LIGHTNING

12046797Thunder and Lightning is a Thin Lizzy Hard Rockin’ and Heavy Hittin’ prize. Released in 1983, this is Old School Heavy Metal that is stupendous with every aspect of it’s music. John Sykes and Scott Gorham on guitars are both a sensational listen. The three songs of Cold Sweat, Someday She Is Going To Hit Back and Baby Please Don’t are abundantly impressive to my Rockin’ hungry ears. In my Metal opinion, the purchase of this album is worth it for these three songs alone. With that said, this entire album is vintage Heavy Metal that should be revisited and celebrated.

Thunder and Lightning for me, is one of those exemplary albums that is worthy of being labeled: a Heavy Metal hidden treasure. The Holy War is a standout song for my Metal senses, it’s not that it just Rocks, the lyrics are intelligent, the guitar solo is breathtaking and the rhythm section comes at you with a continuous cool groove.

The late Phil Lynott is simply excellent on vocals and bass, a bona-fide Rock Legend is he. Phil’s vocals I’ve always found to be contagiously memorable and unique. Bad Habits and Heart Attack are two very catchy, melodious and hooky songs that end this great album, with the guitar riffs and leads on these two songs leaving a lasting impression. Overall, in my Metal opinion, this is as sound, talent fused and classic of a Heavy Metal album as you can ask for. Thunder and Lightning truly delivers on it’s title.

Any Hard Rock, Classic Rock or Heavy Metal fan should appreciate what Thin Lizzy created here with Thunder and Lightning, I without question do. Don’t let your Hard Rock or Heavy Metal collection of music be without this classic from Thin Lizzy. Thunder and Lightning is an album that should surprise new fans who’ve never been exposed to Thin Lizzy before. Lifelong fans of Thin Lizzy that read this are most likely (and hopefully) nodding in approving agreement with me. Old School RocksMetal be thy name.

LONG LIVE THE ROCKIN’ LEGACY OF THIN LIZZY.

Rest In Peace, Phil Lynott.
